You awake with a gasp, your chest heaving as you look around, your sudden transition from nightmare to consciousness disorienting you. As your eyes adjust, the memories of your nightmare fade, replaced with memories of where you are. You look around the small, cramped cabin with a guilty wince, hoping that you didn’t wake up any of the others. The silence of the room is broken only by the soft hum of the fusion reactor below you. With a long-suffering sigh, you hop off the top bunk where you sleep and land lightly on the polished durasteel floor. You can feel the vibrations from the massive ion engines as the VSD Vensenor makes its way through the void between the stars.

That’s three nights in a row now. Emperor’s black bones, you’ve got to do something about these damned nerves. You make your way to the door and press a small button on the wall. A soft hiss escapes into the room as the door opens and you step out into the hallway of the cadet’s barracks. At this early hour, the lights are dimmed and the corridor is empty. All of the other cadets and instructors are asleep - just as you ought to be. You make your way down the deserted hall and towards the refresher, a few doors down. It opens with a hiss, revealing the shared showers, toilet cubicles and sinks. You make your way towards the latter and run the tap, splashing water onto your face to get rid of the sheen of sweat on your brow. You catch a glimpse of your reflection in the mirror and see...

The face staring back at you might well be posted on the recruiting posters – at least, if they caught you on a good day. Your green eyes have large bags under them and your strong jawline is flecked with an unruly 5 o’clock shadow. You rub your eyes and stare blearily ahead of you for a few minutes, before you head to your footlocker and punch in your key code. You grab your personal grooming kit and go through your morning routine a few hours early. When you step out of the showers and finish up, you look more presentable. Your small moustache is trimmed into a more dignified nature and your chin is clean-shaven. Much better.

In a place such as this, appearances matter. You head back to your cabin. Your fellow cadets are still asleep. Good, you’d rather not let them see that the nerves are getting to you. The last thing you want to do on the day before your final flight exam is show weakness. You’ve still a few hours left before wake-up call however, nothing for it but to kill time. You’re not going to be able to get back to sleep now. You sit back down on your bunk and fish out your datapad from the wall locker, and check over your messages.

>>
The routine is so familiar you don’t even need to look at your datapad to type in your commands. Your gaze wanders around the small cabin, taking in the two bunk beds, the dejarik board and your three sleeping flight-mates. Your eyes are drawn to a recruiting poster on the wall, despite your efforts to avoid it. You suspect that the instructors put that particular one there on purpose, as some kind of motivator. You wish it worked like that. The face staring back at you might as well be a distorted version of the reflection you saw earlier – the same eyes, the same jawline. The main difference is the bushier moustache and the scar along the left cheek. Fierfek, you miss the old man. You wish your last memory of that face looked so dignified.

You tear your gaze away and turn your attention back to your datapad. You’re staring down at the holomessages inbox. You’ve already scrolled down a fair way, and your finger hovers over a message entitled “Make me proud.” The message is marked as unread, dated at 17 years after the Declaration of a New Order. Two years ago. Your finger hovers over the ‘play’ button for a few seconds, before you let out a muted growl and toss your datapad back into the locker. It lands with a muted thump. “Damn it you murglak, some of us are trying to sleep.” Your wingmate grumbles sleepily from the bunk below yours. Now you’ve done it.

Your wingmate is:

>The Radical.

Of all the fellow trainees your instructors saw fit to pair you with, why by the stars did they have to pair you with him? He’s so quiet and antisocial he might as well be a droid! His complaintis the most words you’ve heard him string together outside of a response to an instructor or an order for the better part of a week. A long-suffering sigh leaves your lips as you close your locker. “You’re talkative this morning, Cadet Tons.” You greet your fellow cadet, a haughty tone you inherited from your mother (Emperor keep her soul) coupled with a strong Serroco accent.

The man simply grumbles intelligibly and a few seconds later, a dim blue light casts deeper shadows in the cabin as Cadet Elevens Tons chooses to catch up on study rather than rise to your bait. For some reason, the man’s cold indifference always manages to get under your skin, even more than the brash Corellian with whom you compete for the position of top of the training flight. Emperor damn them both, their lack of discipline is what is holding your flight back. “Going to actually demonstrate some teamwork today?” You break the silence after a few moments, only to be met with a noncommittal grunt. Typical.

The next hour continues in much the same light. You try to get some kind of response out of your wingmate, but you get all the result of pissing into a fusion reactor. Tons’s shields are definitely up. When the lights flick on and the familiar music of the Imperial March blares through the speakers in the ceiling of your cabin, it comes as almost a relief. Your other two flight-mates wake up, rubbing their eyes and getting to their feet. Within a short minute, you are all lined up in the corridor outside your cabin. You can’t see the disconcerting green skin or the insouciant slouch of your flight mates, but you can clearly see the instructor marching straight towards your flight. Great.

Three of the four of you stand ramrod-straight, your boots polished and your uniforms perfectly pressed. Every morning is like this: You line up and the instructors pick apart every imperfection they see, reprimanding you every time you fall short of their exacting standards. Never since your training flight was formed has it ever passed muster, despite the best efforts of three of your crew members. Even Tons, the antisocial shutta, looks after his equipment. Every single time, it is the Corellian cadet, Quint, that lets the team down.

The infuriating part about it is that his lack of discipline is matched only by his natural talent. He can out shoot and out fly all three of the rest of you. The instructor, Lieutenant Jaxor Marisel, stops in front of your flight and looks you up and down. You know he’ll find nothing – you’ve covered all of your bases. Your boots are so damn shiny that you can read your Officer’s Handbook in it. Your uniform is ironed to perfection and even you have to admit, your moustache looks so good it’s a wonder that Tadia isn’t drooling right now.

Not that it matters. Out of all the members of the training wing, you’re probably the one that Lieutenant Marisel likes the best. You’re no natural talent like Quint and you’re no savant like Tons – the reason you’re one the best in your wing is backbreaking hard work. Your father taught you that if you want to achieve something, you have to bend all your will and effort towards making it happen. The galaxy doesn’t hand anything to you on a silver platter. Not anymore. The damned Rebels took care of that.

The Lieutenant simply lets out a little ‘hmpf’ of dissatisfaction as he doesn’t find anything and moves on to the rest of your flight. You know that you won’t hear anything until he gets to the end of the line. Tadia is even more a fanatical devotee to the New Order than you are, and Elevens Tons spends all the time he could spend actually socialising hard at study. He’s a bit like you in that respect, but the boy takes it to an extreme. The “AHA” of triumph from the Lieutenant sends a wince through you that you only mostly manage to suppress.

“Cadet Reth, you never fail to disappoint me! Your boots have so much filth on it that they’ve formed a damned senate! Do you seek to infect this ship with filthy subhuman parasites?” His words are quiet, far more chilling than the shouting the other instructors love to indulge in. You know that Tadia would have winced at that one. You certainly did. The reply you hear is laced with all the smugness you’ve come to expect from Corellians. “Doesn’t matter much to me sir, my boots’ll be covered in pirate dren soon enough.”

The result is explosive. You’re stuck sitting in place for a full fifteen minutes as the Lieutenant seems to vent his every frustration he’s been saving up for the past two years on the insubordinate cadet. Eventually, he takes a step back and looks at the rest of you. “Remember, you are NOT individuals. You are a unit, a team, a cog in the Imperial war machine. If you don’t work together, you will not graduate from this academy.” He takes a moment, then adds. “I’ve had enough of you. Report to the hangar bay. Get out of my sight.”

Looks like you’ll be skipping breakfast. Great.

You almost feel sorry for Tadia, being saddled with a wingmate like Quint Reth. Almost. You’re too busy being amazed that she’s yet to have him arrested for treason like she managed to do with the previous five wingmates assigned to her. Damned alien is so fanatical she makes the ISB look downright reasonable by comparison. You’re not going to lie, you dodged a turbolaser blast when you were signed to Tons instead. The man is infuriating, but at least you’re pretty sure he won’t stab you in the back at the first sign of weakness. He’d have to start taking an interest in other people first.

You are the first to break ranks and start marching towards the hangar bay. You’re quick – that’s how you managed to survive without a scratch when…well, when your father died. You know that Quint is quicker on the uptake, but he’s held back by an unwillingness to look eager or obedient. He lags a little behind, injecting a little swagger into his march. You turn your head to regard the man. “Damn it Quint, you know what’ll happen if you flush out. Do you want to be shipped off to Kessel?” You ask, exasperation injected into your voice.

Technically, none of you have clearance to know the past about any of the others but rumours spread like wildfire and you managed to go through Elevens Tons’ notes earlier in your training. Turns out, he’s managed to get tabs on all three of his flight-mates. It isn’t every day that smugglers are given a chance to enlist instead of just getting tossed into the spice mines. You’re not sure what Quint did to escape justice, but you know that he doesn’t seem to have any interest in anything other than proving he is the best pilot on the Vensenor Flight Academy. The man simply chuckles. “You worry too much, they’ll never kick me out. I’m the best pilot they’ve got.” He’s right on the latter point (barely), but you’re not so sure about the first.

>>43056772
Maybe if the rebels didn't wear fucking bicycle helmets I might have rooted for them.
>>
>>43056728

Oh yeah, Defenders are "X-wing killers", they're terrifyingly fast monsters with an armament loadout like a strike fighter. though apparently in X-Wing minis they steer about as well as you might expect for a giant space dart.

Also like >>43056745 said they're expensive as hell, and so only elite pilots (20+ combat missions in interceptors) could fly them. They also don't exist yet - probably.

In general, Sienar can actually produce decent mutltirole or superiority designs, like the /d, /ag, /ad, etc. It's just they cost a lot of cash and really impact the Empire's previous policy of "throw fighters and pilots at it until it dies" strategy.
>>
>>43056745
Yeah, but quality is expensive.
And given the Empire's resources and capabilities, they should have taken the deigns and found ways to reduce the number of parts and cost without sacrificing performance or robustness. It would have increased the requirements for skilled technicians and maintenance engineers, but I think being able to get two or three Defenders for the price of one, and keeping skilled pilots alive, would have evened out the costs.
>>
>>43056820
You simply shrug your shoulders and return to your march. The Vensenor is big, an old Venator-class from the Clone Wars. Despite this, it doesn’t take you long at all to reach the hangar – probably because a good quarter of the ship’s mass is dedicated to hangar space, or at least that’s what it feels like. The four of you stand in the hangar bay of the mobile training academy, standing at attention on the ready line. Lining the hangar bay are fighters, transports and simulator pods in equal measure. Your stomach growls and you curse Quint inwardly. The last thing you wanted was to go through the final examination test on an empty stomach.

Standing before you is none other than Captain Zhar Khan, the director of the Vensenor Flight Academy. Without so much as a moment’s hesitation, you salute. The rest of your flight does the same, though some with more enthusiasm than others. Captain Zhar is an older man, with a cybernetically reconstructed left jaw and burn scars along the left side of his face. His ice-blue eyes are as sharp as ever as he looks over you. “At ease, Besh Flight.” He speaks in a cold Eriadu accent, and you do as you’re told.

“Allright, you know why you’re here. Today is the day of your final test, and you have the honour of being the first flight of the day to step into the simulators. The objective is simple: Destroy everything in the Emperor’s space that is not a part of your flight. The situation is less so: You’ll be flying in the rimward quadrant of the asteroid field of Geonosis.” You watch the man silently, your mind racing. You know this scenario – the third Battle of Geonosis, after the end of the Clone Wars. You’ve studied the conflict between the Geonosian warlord Gizor Delso and the Empire.
>>
>>43056856
Apparently, your expression gives something away and the Captain nods in your direction. “I see one of you recognizes the location. Yes, you’ll be flying in the Gizor scenario. Expect to face Clone-Wars weapons used by the Confederacy, and expect to be outnumbered. Skill alone won’t carry you the day.” He raises his eyebrow as he looks up and down the flight, his meaning evident. “Your continued attendance at this academy relies on your performance in this test. If you fail here, you fail as an Imperial pilot.”

He smiles, though you can’t place the motivation behind the expression. “I expect each of you to make your selves, your families (his gaze rests on you as he says that part) and your Empire proud today. That is all. Report to your stations.” With that, he turns on his booted heel and leaves, and a quartet of Imperial technicians approaches you. “This way, cadets.” The lead one informs you. “We’ll get you set up.” It’s nothing you haven’t done every day, but already the nerves are setting in.

You nod and turn on your heel, following the technician. Your boots click on the polished durasteel floor of the hangar bay, and you can’t help but wonder how your dysfunctional flight will survive what you and Tons both know is a high-level simulation. You shake your head. The Gizor scenario, for kriff’s sake! You meet Tadia’s gaze, and raise an eyebrow in an unspoken question. She returns your gaze, her disconcertingly green face netural in expression as she nods slightly. Well, that’s at least one person you can count on. Probably.

>>
>>43056900
Yeah, but consider the cost of replacing a dozen TIE/ln and pilots to one TIE Defender that can keep that pilot not only alive, but accruing more experience.
Being able to throw pilots and material at a problem until it dies sounds good for propaganda, but accounting and logistics shows that it just doesn't work. At least for pilots that need training.

It would be a different story if the Empire lowered standards for its pilots so that they could be thrown into battle with only two weeks of training from the moisture farms.

More shields, more fire power. Your mind and reflexes are used plenty in tank fighting.

Reflexes and a quick mind are also good for a commander.

Heavier armor, shields, and a gunner help to reduce the amount of attention you need to stay alive, increasing the amount of attention you can dedicate to turning the battle in your favor.
Can't think when you haven't got shields or armor, in an extremely fast fighter which will have difficulty surviving even a glancing hit.

Also we don't control the guns, we have to rely on the turret gunner for that, and the guy running ordinance. We're also probably going to be striking capital ships until we run out of Torpedoes (which will be fast, the earliest model of GAT-12 only holds four torps) as opposed to in a fighter, where we can continue to hit targets until we are dead or there are no fighter targets.

The simulator for the Skipray Blastboat is bolted against the wall of the hangar, and consists of what looks like the bridge of a Skipray that’s been sawed off just behind the seam before the top turret. The ship is an ugly, blocky thing; a far cry from the intimidating dagger-shape of the Imperial-class. Still, it’s the ship that you Fleet Command candidates have been performing simulated and live-fire combat training in for the past year. Your mind runs over the specs of the Skipray. Shields and hyperdrive coupled with heavy armour make it closer to a smaller version of the old Carrack-Class cruiser than the TIE Fighters that the Flight Branch jockeys handle.

You’re not even required to wear the bulky flight suits TIE Pilots wear – the Skipray has life support, something of a luxury at the lower echelons of the Navy. She’s durable, but she pays for it by being slow and sluggish. Which explains the absolute overkill that the Sienar techs installed into the weapon ports. No less than three ion cannons, a Proton Torpedo tube and a Concussion Missile tube make up the forward-facing armament, and further protection is provided by a rotating rapid-fire twin laser cannon turret mounted on the top of the craft. Heh, laser. You know better. It’s just an overcharged blaster with better range.

You don’t even need to wait for the techs to bring up a ladder. You simply clamber up onto the starboard-side wing with a movement that you’ve practised so many times that it is second nature, and open up the hatch on the side. The bridge inside is relatively cramped, with the cockpit separated from the rest of the crew by a closed door. Quint, of course, pushes ahead of you and steps into the cockpit, before sealing the door after him. You shake your head and wait as Tons takes up a position on the main gunnery console and Tadia seats herself at the turret console. After a moment, you settle down into the communications and navigations seat.

Also known as the Captain’s seat. Normally, it is an honour to be granted Captaincy, but for you it is more of a chore. It is your task to keep these louts on-track and on-task, and you know from experience it is like trying to control a zoo. Your seat is the rear-most one, almost facing towards the stern of the vessel. You power up your console and begin the pre-flight checks. Shields are functional, sensors are functional, comms are functional, hyperdrive’s in good order. “Besh 1 to flight, report readiness.”

Unsurprisingly, Tadia is the first to respond, speaking in a crisp voice that doesn’t quite hide her accent. “Besh three, top gun, ready.” She’s got the least work to do with the pre-flight checklist so that’s to be expected. You hope that Quint is the next to speak up, maybe he’s started to take this seriously. Your hopes are dashed as Tons simply responds with. “Weapons, green.” After a full four seconds, Quint’s voice sounds over the internal comm. “Helm, aye.” He says, putting a drawl on the words. The ship thrums with life. Once he reports in, you patch through to Vensenor flight control.

“Skipray Aurek 4 to Vensenor Flight Control, request permission to launch.” You say in your most serious, official voice. As always, you hear a snort of amusement from the direction of the cockpit. You have barely enough time to roll your eyes before the reply comes.
“Vensenor Flight Control to Skipray Aurek 4. You are cleared for launch. Transferring you to combat control. Good luck out there.” He voice responds, and you are surprised to hear that it is none other than the good Lieutenant Jaxor. You don’t even have time to give the order before Quint fires up the engines and the screen in front of you shows you exiting the Vensenor.

The more experience and skill you get, the better your chances will be. Right now, you're still a rookie cadet. And yes, crit-successes do overwrite crit-fails.

You’ve trained for this, trained so Force-damned hard that you’ve gotten migraines as a result before. The screen before you starts to spit out sensor silhouettes and you compare their size, energy reading and general shape with the guide screen on your right and double-check using your own memory. You manage to get a squadron of Vulture Droids heading for the portside bridge of the Vensenor and what looks like a flight of Tri-droids heading for a ragged group of TIE Fighters out to starboard before…

…Well, fierfek. Your headset gives out a piercing electronic shriek and you rip it off of your head before the noise causes permanent hearing damage, wincing from the pain of the static burst. Your screen is now showing errors, faults, static and Emperor knows what else! It takes you a split-second before you realize what is going on, your mind and reaction time giving you a quick recovery. “We’re being jammed!” You call out, and you can hear Tadia curse fluently in some strange language from behind you.

What do you do?
>Try to clear up the bleeps, the sweeps and the creeps.
>Try to get a fix on one of the squadrons you detected earlier
>Write-in?

through the map, find a clearing of space in the battlefield to buy some time and try to see if there is any capacity to evade the jam blasts.

It looks like we're being barrage jammed, since the jamming is effecting multiple systems.
The advantage of barrage jamming is of course, that it jams all sorts of things, however this means that the jammer's power is limited.
Prioritize our communications so we can still give orders, by boosting power to our various communications and sensors systems we should be able to cut through the worst of it.

Try to identify the source of the jamming.

How long have you waited to use that picture?

I googled it just then. I'm writing this whole thing from the seat of my pants.

We 're gonna need a bigger thread.

Can't identify anything if we're blind, and deaf. Sensor's and comms are jammed.
