Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony, but everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them. But when the world needed him most, he vanished. The world slowly smoldered as the Air Nomads were eradicated by the Fire Nation, leaving nothing but empty homes in their wake. The Fire Nation has already started a full-scale campaign on the Southern Water Tribe, beginning the cycle of death anew.

Fifty years this war has raged, scorching the forests and destroying lives. Many have died and all hope of the Avatar's return has been extinguished, but life goes on. The walls of Ba Sing Se, Omashu, and the Northern Water Tribe have held the Fire Nation at bay, seemingly nothing can penetrate them. As always, there is also solace in wandering.

But this isn't a story about the Avatar, or a king, or even a hero, this is the story of Kuo, a wandering Firebender.

You feel a nudge on your hand and you bolt awake, tossing the book you were holding out of your hands, another worthless one about something called "Harmonic Convergence". None of these books mention anything remotely close to spirits being paired with humans. Shinji nuzzles your hand again, so you give him some lizard-pig jerky and water, he gulps it down heartily. You must have fallen asleep at some time during the night while reading through books on Spirits, they aren't exactly entertaining. You see Mae follow a knowledge-seeker around the corner.

"Kuo, we can spend one more day here, then we need to go north to catch the matches. You can get us out of this desert right?"

The lodestone in your bag comes to mind, as does your map, "Yeah, no problem."

Mae follows the seeker past your aisle and dissapears among the shelves, the clutter around you making it hard to move without stepping on reading material.

You probably should clean up, so you start taking stacks of books and placing them back in alphabetical order. This is the easy part, and it thankfully is the majority of the scattered paper. By the time you finish putting away the multitude of books, only a few scrolls remain.

"Thank you, normally my visitors don't bother with cleaning up. I forgive your insult from when you entered, that was the first time I encountered that. I can see the comedic appeal. What are you looking for?" The giant owl startles you by appearing behind you, towering over you with its normal, unchanging face.

"I'm looking for information on spirits being bound to humans, I haven't found anything." You feel the spirits cold, predatory gaze on you.

"That is because you are searching for written knowledge of it, anything to do with something that rare is most likely passed along in oral knowledge. I will search my archives for material concerning that topic. I knew there was an oddity in here earlier, a stray spirit in my library, that must have been you." The spirit flaps its wings and flies off among the shelves.

Shinji pokes his head out of your bag on the ground and whimpers.

You call for a knowledge-seeker and a small fox walks out from between the shelves. You give it some jerky from your bag while Shinji sniffs it a bit. The creature yips at you happily and you tell it to lead you to the Airbending section. The fox bounds towards a row of scroll racks and shelves very close to the section you were in and barks at it, then trots away.

You start going through scrolls and find an almost exact replica of your burnt one, but the last bits are intact. One of the techniques seems to be a variation of the tornado you kept trying to do a few days ago, but it feels like something's different than you were trying. The airbenders feet are moving constantly in the diagram, that might be the problem.

Another scroll shows an Airbender using an odd staff to fire a slash of air, and a wall with a cut in it. They must have been very restrained, because that could easily kill somebody. How did the Fire Nation ever wipe them out?

You find one book on the spirituality of airbending, it seems like a dense read, but it might provide some insight on controlling your weird trips through the Spirit World. Maybe it could even help to figure out that teleporting thing you accidentally did, or tell you how to get back to Flame Point. Highly unlikely, but possible.

You start reading about Airbender spirituality, and are amazed to find that it's a very accessable book. The book even has helpful diagrams that make it easy to understand, though you get the feeling that it isn't from a university. The book explains in very plain language that everything is connected, the Spirit World is a reflection of the physical, and that through not binding yourself to the physical world you can travel between them.

Then you start getting into what happens when an Airbender goes to the Spirit World, or at least the theory. Airbenders can go to the spirit world because their spirits are light enough to rise out of their bodies, but other people can do it too. It explains that some other benders, even Earthbenders, have achieved it by having a strong interaction with a spirit. It shows a diagram of a rope between two planes connecting two figures, then one climbing the rope to get to the top plane. You get the feeling that this is how you get visions even if you aren't an Airbender, but then it explains the rope as more of a tether and that you can travel in the Physical World by moving in the Spirit World.

The book finally goes into that travelling principle, explaining that travel between the worlds can be accessed anywhere, but must end at a place where the veil between the worlds is thin. That explains why you came here, since this library belongs to a spirit, but exists in the real world.

>Technique Possibility: Spirit Travel

You see Mae round a corner as you eat a bit of the thin bread in your pack, "Kuo, let's go, we need to make Omashu by the end of the week if we want to get back to Kim."

"Yeah, about that... I'll get you out of the desert, but I'm not going back to the FNFL." You rub the back of your head nervously.

"Oh... I'm sorry to hear that. Why?"

You scramble for a reason, but eventually you decide on the truth, "I got an offer to join a group in Ba Sing Se, but I can't tell you more than that Mae. It's very secret, just don't tell the others about it."

"I understand... I'll tell them we were abducted or something, but I'll keep this secret. This would make me seem insane." He puts his bandaged hand on your shoulder, it feels rather heavy. "Let's just get out of this desert alright?"

"I found something." You both jump as the spirit interrupts your conversation, perching on a shelf and looking down at you with a cocked head. "I could recite the 5000 page statement that Terba puts out on his business activities to you in full, but I will abridge it in the interest of time. You were bound to Vorlash as part of a trade with your mother for fertility, but after her debt was called, she failed to pay and was sent to the Fog of Lost Souls as punishment."

Mae looks greatly confused, "Okay... I'll just ignore that as I don't understand what he just said."

"Also, I could not help but overhear about the offer to join a secretive group, so I got you a small map as a gesture of gratitude. It details a secret entrance to Ba Sing Se, very helpful considering your heritage." The spirit lifts its wing and nudges a small roll of paper to you with his foot.

You begin on your journey, the tower dissapearing over the horizon. The sands are warm even through the soles of your shoes, but not unfamiliar from your previous experience in this desert. You continue walking for hours, seeing nothing but the occasional cactus. You consider cutting one for its water, but decide you aren't desperate enough yet.

You feel Shinji crawl into your bag, and assume he's just trying to get out of the heat. Then you hear the sound of a sand-sailer approaching. You turn towards it and are greeted by a familiar sight, the Sandbenders who got you out of the desert the first time. You begin to wave at them until an arrow whizzes over your head from behind you and narrowly misses one of them. You quickly turn around to see another sand-sailer.

This one has some Sandbenders in chains powering it while three archers in facepaint fire on your friends and a man in a Fire Captain's clothes orders them around. You aren't sure what you got into.

You start spinning your arms and tracing a circle towards the sand-sailer and the air starts heating up, the flames changing through colors. They settle at an intense white color and you fire it at the sailer. The blast hits the sailer straight on, but the captain and an archer barely make it off before the dry wood bursts into flames. The remaining two archers begin screaming and burning on the ship.

Though you solved the sailer problem, there was also a price. The chained Sandbenders screams join with the archers. You hear them shriek as the sailer burns intensely. You feel the gaze of the Sandbenders behind you burrowing into your back.

Mae jumps towards the captain and begins fighting him. Dodging blast after blast of fire, Mae gets in some good punches. You see the remaining archer line up a shot for Mae, but Shinji pounces on him and starts clawing at him.

You dash towards the flaming ship and head to where the captured Sandbenders are, then you gather your strength and pull down your hands. The flames around the captives instantly extinguish and you set to work melting their chains. You free all of them, most of them have some nasty burns but are otherwise okay. You dash back to where the fight is happening.

Shinji is on the ground near the archer, who is reaching for another arrow. It seems the archer kicked him and lined up his shot because Mae has an arrow sticking out of his thigh. Mae is screaming while using his Earthbending on his sandals to keep his legs moving, but he doesn't seem to be doing well against the captain.

The Sandbenders are still too far away to affect the battle.

You rush for Mae, hoping that the archer will miss, and make it in time to get him out of the way of a blast of fire. You start sparring with the captain. It quickly becomes apparent that he isn't a very good bender, and instead relied on his fighting ability to get by. You throw a few bursts of fire at him and he goes down easily, as he isn't paying attention to you.

You hear a sound from behind you and see that Mae has removed the bandages on his hands, yet they seem to be levitating while wrapped around his forearms. Then you see that there are pebbles sewed into them, and that the sound you heard was him grabbing an arrow with a wrap.

"This hurts like you wouldn't believe, but I don't need to walk to beat you up." Mae throws a bandage at the archer and it wraps around his neck. The archer struggles for some time but eventually passes out. Shinji gets up and limps towards you while whimpering. You pick him up and put him in your bag. Mae passes out next to you, most likely from sheer pain, exhaustion, or a combination thereof. The Sandbenders approach you

"You almost killed our people, but we are grateful for your help. We are already almost full on this ship, but we can take your friend where he wants to go and get him help. We also have some water and food to spare, it would be a shame if you died out here." They hand you more bread and a canteen of water.

"I think that's a good idea, I know a waterbending healer that could help the victims."

"No, we take care of our own, besides, I don't think a Waterbender would do well out here." The Sandbenders and Mae are put in the sand-sailer and they wave as the ship dissapears over the horizon.

You are alone again. Shinji pokes his head out of your bag and you scratch behind his ear and give him some jerky. He did good today, imagine what he could do if you trained him. You push aside those thoughts and start off on your course.

As the sun sets and your first canteen runs out of water, you see a shape on the horizon, a familiar one. You have finally reached the Misty Palms Oasis. The block of ice in the middle chills the surrounding air and reminds you of why this place was such a boon the last time you were here. You decide to try to find those old men, they might help you get to Ba Sing Se after all. So you check the first place you can think of, the inn. You enter and are immediately assaulted by singing from a young woman on a small stage. She seems to be singing an old song about the end of the day and the sun coming up on tomorrow. It's a song that you recognize from a few Earth Kingdom villages you stayed at, so you sit down at the bar and bask in the nostalgia. Eventually the song ends and people applaud the singer, who gets down from the stage. Apparently this is some sort of open stage night, and a large Sandbender gets up on stage and begins singing a hearty chant. The woman walks up to the bar and takes a seat next to you.

"Where'd you get that pipe, it looks really cool." She speaks at you with a sing-song lilt in her voice, obviously very happy to get a chance to sing.

"Oh, I just picked it up while I was bouncing from place to place." You don't want to brag about going to the Fire Nation, that's how you get killed.

"Maybe you should go up and tell some stories, I'd love to hear them." She looks at you and smiles with warmth.

The surest way to get her to leave us alone is to spill spaghetti all over the fucking place. I have a bad feeling about this chick.

"Sure." You walk up to the stage and start telling a story about the time you saw a Sea Serpent.

"So, one time I was on a ship with a bunch of other people, you know, and I was playing some Pai-Sho. So I'm there about to win and the ship starts turning and the captain tells us to stay away from the edges. Then, a huge Serpent, bigger than the boat, rises out of the water. We barely managed to escape it, but the sounds it makes still haunt my dreams. It's still out there somewhere." You kind of flub the story a bit and omit parts, but it seems to go over decently. Most of the people brush it off, but nobody boos you.

You get off the stage and go back to the bar, the girl nowhere to be seen. You must have not been that impressive. Shinji pokes his head sleepily out of the bag and yawns. The bartender gives you a weird look and offers you a free night for your old pipe, since he says his was stolen. Having no use for it, you hand him your old wooden pipe. Shinji crawls out of the bag and stretches on the floor, seemingly better from his injury.

The bartender hands you a key and you head to your room. The bed welcomes you like an old friend and Shinji curls up on your chest.
