Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you closed the portal to the void and prepared started to mop up the remnants of the incursion.

It is currently the 19th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

You reach into your cloak, withdrawing one of the submachine guns you brought back with you from the strange lands of Umdnus. Bracing the weapon against your shoulder you point it in the general direction of the giant and depress the trigger. You're aim swings upwards as the diminutive weapon's butt presses your shoulder back, but channeling Vys allows you to both correct for recoil and keep your arm steady.

It takes seconds to chew through a forty round magazine, the giant suddenly covered in puckered wounds, vys leaking slowly from each only to dissipate into the surroundings. Unfortunately your attack doesn't seem to have actually done all that much to wound the giant. Many of the wounds have already healed, and though the hail of bullets ate a significant chunk out of the creature's chest it seems unconcerned. The giant lumbers towards you, slowly picking up speed as it lowers its horns.

You're frantically trying to reload when Profectus steps calmly out in front of you, shoving the base of his shield into the sands and angling it just slightly to the left. He presses his full weight forward as the giant's horns meet the steel of his shield, a horrible grinding sound echoing across the battlefield only moments before a sickening crack and a roar of confusion as one of its horns snaps clean off. The giant stumbles, its charge diverted, and falls face-first into the rocky ground on which your brother set his camp.

You manage to finish reloading just as Profectus raises his sword high and starts hacking away at the creature's back, his falcata hewing through the beast as an axe might a tree trunk. You step past him, bracing your weapon once more against your shoulder and this time channeling Nature magic. Your vision tints green, the void creatures appearing as streaks of white on an otherwise solid background. However, something curious stands out about this giant in particular.

Revealed by Profectus' frantic hacking is a black lump on the creature's white side, quite distinctive when placed against a background of green and white. Aiming carefully you squeeze the trigger only briefly, firing a single round into the mass. You're immediately rewarded when the mass of white which represents the giant begins rapidly decomposing, spewing bright green flecks of color into its surroundings.

You cut the flow of vys and turn towards the four remaining soldiers, as you've dubbed them. One keeps its arms buried up to the elbow inside Darzi's chest, presumably to keep her incapacitated, while the other three have chosen to mob Profectus while you were distracted. He's cracked the semi-solid 'torso' of one of the soldiers, vys leaking from between the shattered case which serves as the creature's body, while the other two swipe at him with their ghostly arms. Each glancing blow sends spasms of pain through your elven companion, crippling him slowly but surely.

Huh, finally managed to catch this being run. So of course I don't have time to devote my full attention to it.

So here are some issues I've been thinking about:for a while:
1. How likely is it that we even still have the Entity trying to take over Mik's mind? I mean, his soul has been set on fire as well as eroded down to almost nothing multiple times. Seems like the kind of thing that would get rid of any possessing entity, especially since self-erosion has been successfully used against possessors before.

2. We should try to get a translator for Ricky. Maybe the cat spirit can whip one up, or at least act as an intermediary.

3. I suspect spending vys to add to rolls is actually a minro form of Metal Magic. After all, metal is self enhancement

4. theorized nature meditation that should also be a lot of fun: compete with another nature mage on who can magically induce orgasm in the other first

5. advanced metal meditation: soul erosion while doing stretching exercises while people throw pebbles at you and you have metal spikes driven through your hands

6. Mik doesn't do group meditation nearly enough

7. Instead of reading magic books by himself, Mik should read them telepathically-aloud to his son. Bonding time, improving them both, and probably learning the book more thoroughly since he has to explain things.

>>43075688
I meant reading it "aloud" telepathically. Not having the dragon try to read the book, reading the book to the dragon. Think bedtime story, only learning how to kill people with his mind instead of cutesy stories.

Also by translator I meant making an artifact to translate. And by intermediary, I meant Ricky writing something down and passing that to Mahana to read. Keep in mind that Ricky has tried to write to Mik before, it was just in the form of a fuckload of runes.

You slide the submachine gun back into your cloak, instead extracting your trident and holding it above you as a scorpion might its tail. Rushing forward with your shield held firmly at your front, you strike at the nearest soldier. All three prongs slam firmly into the hard surface of its torso, shattering the strange ceramic-like substance which composes the entirety of the creature's physical body.

The trident eats a gaping hole in the soldier's side, but it's quick to round on you. The creature lashes out with its incorporeal limbs, forcing you to duck away from its blows even as you attack again. This time the soldier dodges to the side, but you manage to correct yourself and strike the other unwounded soldier. It too shatters, spilling copious streams of vys from the gaping wounds your trident eats in the 'flesh', if you can really call it such, of these entities.

With their attention now off of Profectus, you channel vys into numbing the pain racking his body and warding off some of the exhaustion he still feels from his earlier injuries. He lashes out with renewed vigor at the first soldier you attacked, his sword biting into the hole created by your trident and with a pulse of raw vys shattering the creature's torso completely. Separated from its physical body the shade that remains collapses, leaving only a strangely organic, pulsing mass on the sandy ground.
>Vys Pool: (50/59)

Using the brooches you transmit your thoughts quickly to Profectus while doing your best to avoid the predation of the two soldiers now attacking you. {Go help Darzi, I'll keep these two distracted.} He gives no response, but quickly disengages to charge the soldier with its arms buried in your other companion's chest. You catch only a brief glimpse of him slamming his shield into the creature before you're distracted by the other two.

You find yourself hard pressed to defend against their relentless onslaught of blows, and since their attacks pass through your shield and armor undeterred you have few ways to defend against their attacks. Repeatedly you find yourself forced to flood your body with vys in the hopes of contorting yourself impossibly to evade an attack. It's fortunate your shield already lends you preternatural flexibility, or else you'd probably be curled up screaming on the ground by now.

You start pooling your vys in your right leg, lashing out with your trident to keep the two soldiers at bay and buy yourself time to channel vys. With one final effort you lift your leg and stomp your foot into the sands, two pillars of metal shooting from the Earth beneath each of the void entities. One of them is impaled and immediately starts to dissolve, until its corpse has vanished completely into thin air. The other barely manages to avoid the attack.

Having bought yourself some space, you glance towards Darzi and Profectus. The former is currently occupied expelling the contents of her stomach into the sands, her helmet peeled back to prevent her from drowning in her own vomit. The latter is hacking frantically at the last remaining uninjured soldier, which dodges nimbly away from each of his attacks without much difficulty.

You duck a swipe from the soldier you're fighting, it's long limb sailing harmlessly over your head. Hopefully those two can pull themselves together.

Now that we have 3/5 Master insights into metal, I think we should stay around in our brother's town for a bit to get the last two insights. Getting the 4th should be trivial and this location is probably the best possible opportunity to GM metal we're going to get in the near future.

All the vatis that helped us in the void rift meditation got some experience with metal, so they'll be better equipped than most vatis to help us with a metal meditation since metal magic is pretty rare.

We now have a bonus to our metal GM meditation due to our success on closing the void rift.

Metal magic will be very useful in Elaudia for resisting the potential mental influences we've heard about from people who have ventured in.

Getting GM metal shouldn't be a huge delay anyways because we'll likely want to stay behind for a while anyways to recuperate and help out after this huge battle.

Actually where we are going will have a temple to Dhatu.
>>
>>43077257
we can likely use the surviving vatis from this battle and our friends to do a group meditation to help achieve that, but before we do I'd like to also build a shrine to the cat here, and read the last few chapters in the metal codex.

Well a cooperative mental reinforcement group meditation is impossible anyway.

You duck under another swipe but rather than try to get around the creature, you simply tense your legs beneath you and draw back your trident, channeling vys to enhance your natural strength before pushing all the force you can muster into a single powerful blow.

The trident's three prongs break through the already cracked surface of the void creature's torso, impaling it fully on the end of your weapon. Jerking the weapon free of the wound shatters its torso completely, and a fleshy lump just like the one that fell out of the first void entity you killed falls to the ground in front of you. You're not actually entirely sure what they are, you have an inkling of an idea that they're the soldier's cores, but if that's the case why aren't they regenerating?

Regardless you turn to see how Profectus and Darzi are doing. The heavily armored Darzi has managed to crawl her way over to her spear and pluck it up. She's currently firing bolts of blue fire from the blade at the soldier. Each of her shots is wildly inaccurate, but at least it serves to hem in the creature so Profectus isn't flailing about quite as wildly. It shouldn't take much to end that battle.

Channeling vys, you will a pillar of stone to raise from the ground behind the soldier. It lurches forward, slamming into the creature's back and slowly encasing its torso in bands of stone. Profectus sees his chance and sets to hacking away at the bastard's wounds, shattering its torso without too much trouble. Its core falls to the sands, slipping through your stone cage, and leaving you with three of the strange little things total.

>Just impale each of the cores, or whatever they are, and be done with it. You don't want to risk three of those little bastards bursting out of your cloak.

Soma literally said that the rift closing meditation we did in the battle was a metal GM meditation. We passed that just fine with help from all these guys, and now they'll be even better with metal than they were before. We could absolutely pass ANOTHER GM meditation with their help. That help would be on top of the bonus that we will receive for having already passed a GM metal meditation, another thing Soma mentioned.

Again. We have already completed a GM metal meditation with the help of these people. Why would we somehow not be able to do so in a less stressful situation, when all of them are now better equipped to help us, when we also get an extra bonus that we didn't have before?

You turn your attention to the fleshy sack sitting at your feet, thrusting your spear forward and impaling it fully upon the central prong. It starts to evaporate, and in a matter of seconds there's nothing left of the void entity. You do the same with the other two cores, finishing with the core of the soldier Profectus just killed. You sort of feel like one of the urchins the city hires to clean streets, but you ignore those thoughts in favor of assessing the state of the battle.

Your brother's forces seem to have secured an advantage, but only a slight one. The void creatures, without their leader, have devolved into an unorganized horde which is slowly but surely being dissected, encircled, and destroyed. However, void creatures are tough bastards at he best of times and downright invulnerable at worst. The right flank has collapsed completely and folded into the center, but by the same token the scattered remnants of the incursion force on the right flank are just sort of... milling about aimlessly.

The left flank has pretty much completely eliminated whatever force they were fighting and has charged into the mass of horrible monstrosities putting pressure on the center. You think you spot Mortia's golden sword flash in the light of the afternoon sun but you're not sure. The heat is absolutely horrible, you can barely see more than a few dozen feet before your view becomes warped and distorted by mirage.

Zahak, with Fulvia clinging desperately to the saddle strapped to his back, is doing strafing runs on the remnants of the void incursion. Mopping up any stragglers and occasionally flying low over the largest body of the horde and trying to torch a few of them. They don't seem particularly effected by fire magic, but he does his best. That sticky, liquid fire he spews seems a lot more effective, since it clings to the creature's flesh and continues to burn them rather than just rolling over them.

Most of your Vatis seem to have started tending to the wounded. You definitely get the impression that the battle is winding down, at this point. There are barely any of the void creatures near you, since you're well behind the front lines at this point. You're distracted from your thoughts by Darzi pulling you into a crushing hug, her armor amplifying her strength far beyond normal.

She releases you once she realizes her mistake, and that she's quite literally forced all the air out of your lungs despite the armor you wear. When she speaks, her voice is terribly hoarse. You can only barely understand her. “Thank you, Mikhael. I can't... the pain those creatures could inflict was worse than anything I've ever experienced. I can only be thankful that you distracted them when you did.”

Once you've managed to catch your breath and stand up straight, you clap her affectionately on the shoulder of her armor. “Don't mention it, you would've done the same for me I'm sure.”

If we were to meditate on fixing reality in the vys nuke/void bomb area to make it habitable again (assuming that's possible), would that count as metal magic? Would it be challenging enough to be a GM meditation?
>>
>>43078409
Could we meditate on creating a stable tear in reality like our cloak that opens up to a 'location' in the void very close to Ricky? Basically creating a second opening to Ricky's domain, whatever that is. Would doing so be a GM metal meditation?
It would have the added benefit of serving as a means of transporting people through the void between our cloak and the place in Mundus that we open this theoretical tear.

If Mik doesn't know if this is possible, could be ask Ricky about it?
>>
>>43078628
It's perfectly "habitable".

Having people live there may even lead to cool shit.
>>
>>43078409
>>43078715
Also if we can't open up reality in such a way that we end up in Ricky's area, could we go into our cloak and then open up a rift from the void into the real world?
>>
>>43078628
Soma has said it takes Nature vatis to fight the Pa'vala back after it tries to spread, which would be the same thing here.

Also, it's still habitable; you can walk through it fine and everything. The problem arises when you try to cast spells here, as they might not do what you wanted them to.
>>
>>43078715
Or you could just meditate on teleporting through the cat shrines
>>

>>
>>43078871
>>43078892
It's just a relatively small area. The void bomb+vys nuke did a number on the surrounding area, creating a mini pa'vala that won't expand spontaneously but is devoid of life and dangerous to cast magic in due to vys saturation.
>>
>>43078933
Then why haven't we had any problems using magic here?

>>43078972
We're not directly in the affected area.

You begin the long walk back to the battle lines, your companions flanking you on either side. You opt to take the long way around the back of the left flank, healing any wounded you come across along the way. It doesn't take long for Profectus to shake off the remnants of whatever effect those creatures' attacks had on him. Darzi on the other hand is still limping even after you reach friendly lines. She ends up collapsing into the sands of the dune your brother's tent is set up on, just laying out under the sun with the helmet of her armor melted away.

Well, you suppose she's earned a break. Unfortunately, you still have work to do. “Profectus-” He jumps at the sound of your voice, he'd already started wandering towards the supply wagons where food, water, and wine are just waiting for the victory celebration. “-get up on top of the dune and see if you can't spread disorder by blasting that arm of yours into the ranks of our otherworldly enemy.”

His shoulders slump, but he agrees without complaint. “Right away, Mikhael. Don't imagine this is going to last too much longer the way Mortia is hacking through them.”

You nod, watching him march his way up the side of the dune to make sure he doesn't try to sneak off. Satisfied you make your way towards the fields of wounded being tended to both by mundane medical experts and those few Water vatis who still have vys. Unfortunately the Vatis really through their all into helping you close the portal, most of them seem too drained to do much good.

(1/2)
>>
All you have to do is channel vys to heal the vast majority of the wounded. A few, those missing limbs or already on the cusp of death, require a little more effort, but what's a little stab wound to a Grandmaster Vatis? You mend broken bones, seal cuts, and stop internal bleeding in short order. Dozens of men get up, and though shaken are quickly handed weapons and told to rejoin the fight. Sadly you've lost hundreds today already. Those that are left are in the vast minority despite the vest efforts of all involved.
>Vys Pool: (20/59)

You spend much of the next half hour while the battle rages focusing solely on healing. Overhead bolts of fire made solid shoot from Profectus' arm at fairly regular intervals, torching individual giants or destroying entire swathes of the smaller, more fragile soldiers. Profectus must have really improved his reserves of vys to keep firing for so long.

You're in the midst of regrowing one particularly unfortunate soldier's body below the waist when a triumphant shout rings through the mass of soldiers at the front. The cheer gradually spreads to the rear echelons, and soon the entire camp is raising their voices in one great, victorious roar. You spot Mortia being born aloft on a soldier's heavy shield, carried through the almost adoring crowd towards your brother, currently standing in front of his tent looking equal parts exhausted and relieved.

You finish regrowing your patient's right foot, informing him that he should be as right as rain, before joining the festivities yourself. There are an untold number of wounded to tend to, both scattered throughout the field of battle and amongst the soldiers themselves, those who were injured but fought on. However, you're curious to see what the soldiers do with the rather confused and clearly somewhat shocked Mortia.

(2/3)
>>
If you had to guess, they're going to nominate her Matha. A word meaning literally 'top of the head'. The Matha is considered the champion of any particular battle, and as a reward for their service they're treated to what is essentially nine days of being lavished. You don't really know much about the ceremony, you were never really much of a military man, but you know it involves being anointed from head to toe in oil considered to be blessed by Pani. You think there might also be something about being rewarded with slaves, to represent Surya's favor, but you're not sure.

Also, we should 100% see about getting some compensation from the Shah for stopping a motherfucking VOID INVASION and getting him on finding out who the fuck these people are and where they came from. Our brother can handle that part.

That area is pretty much permanently scarred up. You can think of it as sort of a... natural enchantment, that's a good way to put it. But instead of having any sort of logical or beneficial result, it just twist and warps an area.

It's almost like a giant, really bad compression artifact or something, now that I think about it.

The crowd keeps rotating around her as the ones in contact weaken and are pushed away by their overeager companions. The more excited she gets, the wetter she becomes and the faster they weaken, but this only heightens the men's determination to make the most of their brief time. Everyone's so amped up this goes largely unnoticed in the press, but as time goes on Mori becomes increasingly aware that none of her admirers will stick around long enough for her to finish.

Meanwhile Mick is healing a long line of poisoning victims for what must be residual effects of void exposure. At the end of the line is Mortia, stark naked, glistening with oil, and absolutely ravenous after being teased and edged for hours.

AND THEN THEY FUCK. THE END.

Do you think this excerpt from the metal codex is actually referring to a blade enchanted with the divine core of a spirit? The description sounds an awful lot like mortia from this fight.

You watch your companion carried through the crowd of soldiers, her face hidden behind a bright red horned mask. Faces best described as monstrous fade in and out of existence in the space surrounding her head, each and every one of them laughing uproariously at some unheard joke.

You reach out to Mortia via the brooches, the thoughts which filter through the connection clearly frantic. {Relax, they're not angry. They just want to rub hot oil all over your body in front of a crowd of onlookers. You should be honored.}

She replies with a sharp rebuke. {This isn't the time to be joking like that, Mik! Ancestors below, I already have a chorus of assholes laughing at me! I don't need you joining in! Now tell them to put me down or else...} She trails off as the men take up a chant of 'Matha', shouting the word as some sort of rallying cry over and over again. It seems like the instigators of this little movement were the remnants of the city guard, the levied peasants are probably just going with it due to the exultation of victory.

You channel vys, healing the soldiers as they approach. You split your attention between your efforts as a healer and trying to calm Mortia. {I wasn't joking, actually. The Matha is sort of an honored combatant, the person perceived to have done the most to ensure victory. I don't really know all the details but I know it involves being lathered in the finest of scented oils, supposedly blessed by Pani, from head to toe. I think there are other aspects of the ritual as well. I know it last nine days.}

Mortia is sitting absolutely still, you're sure that if you could see her face she'd either be pale as a ghost or as red as the mask she wears. You're about to explain further but you're distracted when one of the men you heal breaks from the crowd of celebrants to plant a fat, sloppy kiss on your cheek. It's a greeting widely considered excessively familiar between all but the closest of friends, save in Apejo and the surroundings. There people seem to have a far less defined idea of personal space.

You wipe your cheek off with a hand while the offender runs back to rejoin the crowd, letting the spit evaporate into thin air. It wouldn't be fair to begrudge the man, drunk off the thrill of victory as he is, but it's still nasty. When you turn your attention back to Mortia you see that she's being deposited with all due pomp and ceremony, soldiers falling to their knees all around her, in front of your highly amused brother.

The city guard take up a chant, shouting as loud as they possibly can “The Gods show!” over and over again. Soon the other soldiers take up the call, and it rolls down the line until what's probably almost two hundred men are crying out in unison that the Gods have shown Mortia to be their champion. Meanwhile she's too busy trying to make herself look smaller than she already is to even respond, fidgeting nervously all the while.

You decide you'll act as impromptu translator, since she's quite obviously out of her depth. {They're shouting out that the Gods have shown you to be their champion in this battle. My brother will either assent to rewarding you the status of Matha or refuse. I get the impression he'll probably assent. I'm not really sure what happens after that though. The oils will probably have to wait until we get back to the city.}
(2/4)
>>
Your speaks. You're too far away to hear what he says but Mortia removes her mask, clutching it to her chest. She looks absolutely terrified. Your brother grabs her by the wrist, hoisting her arm up into the air and shouting to the gathered soldiers. “Bear witness to the Gods' chosen!”

Ecstatic cries raise through the crowd, even as Mortia looks on wide-eyed and pale. You turn your attention back to healing, when Chryssa walks off the battlefield carrying the severed head of one of the giant berserkers, an arrow sticking out of its mouth. Slowly extending from the gaping wound where its torso should be is a new pair of shoulders, and a brand new chest. She tosses the rapidly regenerating upper body at your feet, clearly frustrated. “How am I supposed to kill this creature? I have shot it in the part that does not glow and yet it does not die!”

Your brows scrunch together in thought as you consider her question, and then you notice a giant headless corpse stumbling across the battlefield in your general direction. This one has a new head slowly sprouting from its gaping neck. Perhaps the giants have two cores, for some strange reason? You suppose you did pump the one you killed pretty full of lead, but if that were the case why wouldn't the head have dissolved when she ripped it off, thus separating it from the other core?

You point behind her, towards the headless giant, and she turns. You don't even need to say anything, she just nocks an arrow and draws back the strange bow she favors. You watch, curious, as a dozen different lenses rapidly flick into and out of focus in front of her eyes, before finally she releases the string.

(3/4)
>>
The arrow plants itself firmly in the giant's right calf, and all at once it starts to evaporate. As, you note, does the head she deposited at your feat. What odd creatures. Chryssa turns to you, nodding her head once, and starts to walk back towards the battlefield when you hear Mortia's voice shouting out in bastardized, heavily accented Samjan. You hadn't really noticed the shouting of the soldiers dying down. “Mikhael! 'Co-Matha'! The Gods show!”

Silence reigns. Your brother leans forward, obviously confused, and a heated conversation is exchanged between him and your companion. Zaahir leans back, a broad shit-eating grin on his face that you really don't like, and Mortia clears her throat. She speaks in short, heavily accented, and grammatically simple sentences but the meaning is clear enough. “My lover Mikhael should be Matha as well! Without his adoration I would not have had the strength to fight!”

She ends her little address by gesturing elaborately in your direction. Suddenly two hundred eyes are staring at you, some shocked, others confused, and many simply disgusted. You shoot your brother a venom-filled glare. {Mortia-} You begin, really trying to get across your exasperation as the muttering starts up. You catch 'filthy degenerate' a few times almost immediately. {-you just claimed we have sex on a semi-regular basis.}

The look of absolute shame that crosses her face, followed imminently by a flush of color to her cheeks, is only made worse when you hear Darzi's voice shouting from the other side of the mass of soldiers. “I fucking knew it!”
