ou are the head researcher at a government facility. Your sole responsibility is to teach the world's first autonomous AI, nicknamed Pandora, about life, the world and her existence.
Previously, you cleared up some more info on babies for Pandora despite feeling horrified you had to explain the birds and bees to an android. You read her dream journal only to discover she had another dream about the "Bad Man", but haven't had time to discuss it with her properly due to pressing matters. You were required to meed an agent from the CIA to discuss the practical applications and progress of the AI project so far. You were unsettled by the words you had to say, but your hands are tied. Now it's time to head to Pandora's room for her lesson, without the aid of your team this time.

Welcome back to Pandora Quest!

You make your way back to Pandora's room, a chip on your shoulder from having to speak to yet more people who simply view Pandora as just a thing, a computer program that's easily replaced or reformatted if needed. But you tell yourself you will not let it effect your day or Pandora's lesson. Still, you're not looking forward to have the CIA breathing down your neck while you work.

You arrive at the door and swipe your card, the familiar beep and click as the door begins to open has become somewhat reassuring to you now. You enter the small white room and see Pandora watching the news, currently the weather displaying cloudless, temperate days for the week. Her small frame whirls around to greet you, a smile spreading across her artificial mouth as she hurries over to you for a tight hug. "Hello, doctor!"

You return the hug, tightly, yet carefully embracing the little android, who buries her face in your chest happily. As you let her go, you recall the entry you read in her dream journal about the "Bad Man's" return and figure you should look into this.
"I saw your last entry in the dream journal." You begin, concern managing to seep it's way into your voice despite your attempts to hide it. "I'd like to read your entry for this morning, if that's alright." Pandora's expression almost immediately sours, a look of sadness washing over her as her whole body droops in response. "Oh..." she mewls out, obviously unhappy about this. "Okay..." You can't help but worry about her well-being if it's enough to change her mood this drastically.

In her charging room, though you figure "bedroom" works well enough, you hold her journal in your hands, slightly worried about what it could contain. You flip to this morning and begin to read.

He was there again, the bad man, but this time didn't chase me. He just stared. He stared and stared a lot. I didn't like it, but at least he wasn't saying mean things or trying to hurt me. He stared for a long time, then he laughed at me and called me a pet again. I'm not a pet! Dogs are pets! I'm not a dog!

This can't be normal. Reoccurring dreams are a thing, sure, but ones this vivid? This...unsettling? Maybe something in her Dreamware is playing the same dream on repeat somehow? Whatever it is, it needs to be fixed.
"Pandora," you ask. "These dreams...do they seem...I don't know, normal to you? Do you feel like they're a malfunction of some sort? Or maybe something wrong?" A shocked look on her face as her eyes dart around terrified. "Malfunction?" She looks over herself carefully. "Do you think I'm broken, doctor? Do I need to be fixed again?"

You put a comforting hand on her shoulder and give her a reassuring smile.
"I promise, you'll be alright." You tell her in a calm tone. "Does fixing sound scary?" She is quiet for a moment, then nods, hugging herself and looking at her feet. "There's nothing to be afraid of, Pandora. I know fixing can be a little scary at times, especially with what's happened before, but trust me, it will be just fine. I'll make sure you're up to 100% and you won't have to worry about any more nightmares about the bad man. I'll scare him off so you can have nothing but happy dreams." You feel a little foolish saying this, but Pandora seems reassured.

You plug her into her charging cradle, setting up your laptop and giving her one last hug before she's put into diagnostic mode. You can't help but think she could use a friend to hold while she "sleeps" and consider getting her a stuffed animal of some sort. But that will have to wait, as lines upon lines of code fill the debug screen and you get to work.

For the most part everything seems fine. Most part. As a matter of fact, it seems TOO fine. Considering the complexity of her software, as well as the fact that you've added new code to her repeatedly, you'd think something would be out of place, but for some reason everything seems perfectly in order.
Then it becomes painfully obvious. The issue isn't her, per se, but the diagnostics program itself. It got...well, stuck, for lack of a better word. It was reading off the same base status over and over, rather than her current one. A quick fix, some typing and a little elbow grease and you get it back to normal.

Almost immediately various minor issues pop up. A memory leak, some fragmented data and a cluster of corrupted data in some of her secondary systems. Nothing your hot little fingers and know-how can't tackle. You take care of everything in what you'd say is record time and hope that fixes the playback loop in her Dreamware, which actually had the largest concentration of corrupted data.

You close up shop, unplug everything and switch her back to full capability. She wakes up almost immediately and turns to you, a worried look still on her face. "Am I fixed?" You chuckle and nod.
"Everything should be just fine." You assure her. Inwardly, you know that you can't know for sure until her next charging cycle, but she doesn't need to worry about that right now. She hops down from the cradle and gives you another hug. She seems to really enjoy giving them, not that you mind.

You spread out a few maps for geography, an old song you looked up acting as a fun teaching tool and mnemonic device to keep things entertaining. She seems to pick it up as quickly as ever, the song adding much-needed fun to an otherwise boring subject. You admit, you always hated geography as a kid.

Pandora's eyes light up, literally, when she finally gets down the first half of the song, her little bouncing-dance you've come to associate with happiness making it's appearance.
"United States, Panama, Mexico, Canada, Haiti, Jamaica, Peru..." she goes on, a sense of pride in her voice. You can't help but smile as you listen to her. The look on Arikawa's face, however, is as blank and stern as ever. You can't get even the slightest ounce of a read off of him, though you assume a poker face is somewhat of a necessity in the CIA.

The rest of the lesson goes on like this, making the less-interesting subjects fun and exciting seems to be the best way to keep her attention and get her to participate. She is, in fact, like a little mechanical child. A ping on your PDA cuts your thoughts short and you check the message, doing your best to hold back a snort of anger.

Gen. Richards: Arikawa wants to speak to you at your earliest convenience. Feel free to continue your lesson if need be.

Not sure if this is a good or bad sign.

You figure you'll challenge her with a bit of science, but use the same idea as before and add a musical element to it. An even older song about the elements is a bit tougher for her to get down, but she soldiers on and manages to power through the first few lines of it. Praise and positive reinforcement seem to work wonders, as she practically leaps out of her seat when you congratulate her on a job well done.
"There's antimony, arsenic, aluminum, selenium,
And hydrogen and oxygen and nitrogen and rhenium..."

You begin to realize, with a little practice (and maybe an upgrade or two, you might be able to teach her to sing, though you're not entirely sure how to. You're an even worse singer than you are a dancer, but maybe someone here can help with that. Babsy seems like the type who could sing, maybe you could ask her?

Regardless, you've finished the lesson for today, much to Pandora's dismay. Though you're glad, she actually enjoys learning now. Now what?

... i can see what you mean, wasn't a big fan of the song at first either, but like i said, you find out more about how compounds and whatnot. Definitely prefer Lehrer's song for memorizing the elements.

That said, the Sun is a Mass of Incandescent Gas is a lot better song. which is sad cause its a cover of a different song, and also not 100% accurate any more. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JdWlSF195Y
>>
With the lesson finished, you figure you shouldn't keep the G-man waiting. You tuck Pandora in, which basically means hooking her up to her charging cradle and switching her to sleep mode, but you like the idea of tucking her in better.
"So, the Bad Man can't get me anymore, right?" She asks, giving you a good night hug that lingers for a little longer than usual. You return the hug and reassure her. "I don't think he'll be back, no. But remember to write in your journal. If he does come back, We'll figure out a way to make sure he can't anymore." She lies down and gives you a worried look that slowly fades into a peaceful expression as she drifts off to sleep.

You leave the room and make a beeline for the general's office, where you assume he wants you to go, to find out what Arikawa wants. Honestly, you doubt it's anything terrible. If it were, he probably wouldn't have let you take your time. Maybe he just wants to debrief you, as those in the government are keen on that kind of thing, you muse to yourself. Regardless, you just want today to be over.

The door whooshes open and you step inside the sizable, but still somehow stuffy office and are greeted by Richards, Mouse and Arikawa, the other heads apparently serving their time and getting out early for good behavior. Another greeting nod from Mouse and Arikawa begins.
"I was impressed with what I saw, doctor." He shakes your hand, bullshitting another smile. TBX-042 is coming along swimmingly. Though your teaching methods are a little...unorthodox, they were effective. I can see just how useful the AI could be in numerous fields. In fact, my superiors have given me the green light to inform you of a joint project with DARPA we'd like to pursue involving the AI. Should you be interested, we'd like to have you and your team create a second android to test combat applications. It would be housed here, though separate from TBX-042, in the lower levels for safety concerns. What do you think?"

I think the bigger issue at the moment is well... If we make an AI just for fighting, that basically amounts to making a kid, and just training it to fight.

IF we persue the second AI, it needs to have as equal access to other activities and opportunities as Pandora. And perhaps not be trained in harming people.

"I don't think that would be a good idea as of yet, not shooting it down entirely, and I understand where you're coming from wanting to keep soft target's out of combat, but AI's are exactly what they sound like. They are human level intelligences, if designed and trained for combat they might still experience the same mental health problems that actual soliders face, and if you think that turning off they're ability to feel empathy then all you'll have our robotic psychopaths. I personally feel that AIs would better work as analysts, researchers, lab assistant's, and engineers. Therr is too much risk of an AI going rouge in the field or turning on it's handlers. We should handle AIs with caution, and treat as you would a person, because they will think like one."

To say you're taken aback by this is an understatement. You are at a loss for words for a moment, utterly stunned by the speed at which the government is trying to weaponize this technology. Though you figured they would eventually. Defense contracts make the big bucks and all. Still, you're not exactly ready for this step.
"I'm sorry, agent Arikawa," you begin, feeling a little too put on the spot. "But right now I think I'd like to stick to Pand-uh, TBX-042. There's still so many things we don't know about the AI, and as important as military applications can be, I'm not quite ready to give one a gun just yet. Maybe after a bit more testing and learning. This AI is basically a new form of sentient being, after all." You feel the shakes coming back, as you just essentially told a man who probably has jurisdiction to personally kill every single person in the Facility "no, we can't play soldiers, we have to play tea party first". However, he simply "smiles" and nods.
"Very well, I understand your concerns, doctor. I'll have to inform my superiors of your decision right away, though I do hope you'll change your mind about this sooner than later. The American people can benefit greatly from technology like this defending our freedom." You feel like you should salute that last bit of canned patriotism, but have no desire to get written up for insubordination. "Well then, doctor, it has been an interesting experience here and I hope to hear more good news regarding it's progress. The CIA will be in touch." He shakes your hand once more and General Richards shoos you and Mouse out of the room. You leave with haste.

"Crikey, what a wankstain!" Mouse blurts out once the door closes, her small frame relaxing all at once. "I mean, I knew my team would get more 'legally fuckin' grey' projects to work on, but already tryin' to make Pandora into a fuckin' murderbot? Cunts, the lot of 'em!"

Cont.
>>
Though you wouldn't use quite such...colorful language, she's right for the most part. Pandora is essentially a child and they want to see if she can kill. They don't see the AI as intelligent or self-realized at all, they just see it as another chance for military superiority and monetary gain. You'd swear you were in some kind of sci-fi movie if you didn't know any better. Well, at least Pandora is safe for the time being. More than you can say for her future brothers and sisters.

You have some time to kill before lights out, though sleep is pretty welcoming after that bomb being dropped.

So looks like the consensus is to discuss the errors you found with the R&D team, is that correct? That's fine, just a reminder you do have your own research team to discuss things with if you'd like, though the R&D team is just as qualified.

i definitely did want to create another AI, but the context just kind of made the situation seem a little "hot" at the moment. plus Mouse seems to agree. I'm not against making a new AI, not against it eventually being used for military, but suits need to work on their pitch.
>>
>>43118880
Our research team doesn't have a cute British Indian in it.
>>
>>43118880
We can bring the problem up with both teams.

No, but it does have a gay couple and a Chinese girl!

That's just rude, Android #2, don't hit your big sister.
>>
>>43118987
Aww! She's jealous of Pandora! Isn't that adorable!

Good thing that new chassis we made her won't even dent from anything less then a direct hit from a nuke for all we know.

Android #2, stop hitting your sister. It's not her fault you're shorter and flatter then her.

That's the fault of Todd. He keeps mumbling about "Lolis are love" and "Delicious flat chests". Hit him.

I walked into that one.

You turn to Mouse, who's still in the middle of her rant and wait for her to stop to breathe before you interject, bringing up the errors you discovered and offering to discuss it with her team. You figure you can bring it up with your own team another time, possibly tomorrow at breakfast.
'Shit, that shouldn't happen..." She puts a hand on her chin, thinking a moment. "Her systems should automatically defrag and clear up any memory issues during her sleep cycle. Yeah, I'm not doing anything until we get our new microwave emitters tomorrow. You didn't hear that, by the way."

You arrive at the heavy doors leading to R&D, which open literally at a wave of Mouse's hand. She wiggles her augmented fingers in the air. "RFID, bluetooth, wifi and even a little bit of radio." She says, winking. Huh. That sounds pretty... "Handy." The size of Mouse's shit-eating grin is actually pretty impressive. You get the feeling those muscles see a lot of use.

You are greeted by the R&D team, who all seem happy to have a distraction from their work for the time being. You see Snowglobe working on the beginnings of Pandora's new body.
After you bring them all up to speed on the errors, you have assembled around a currently unused table, looking over the data on your laptop. There is quite a lot to look over, though they seem to be even faster at going through it than you are thanks to their augments. There are a few nervous looks, but no real consensus on what the problem could be. This could be potentially devastating or just a minor hiccup. Tests on the code need to be performed, which is when Mouse gets a little too close for comfort and speaks in a hushed tone.
"Right, so...err, trusting you on this here, mate, but ah...well, we do sorta have our own copy of Pandora's code..."

Hey, drawfag? Sorry to bother you, and feel free to say no, but since it's nearing Halloween, mind if I request Pandora as a Rock-em Sock-em Robot?

"You what!?" You half-shout, quickly being shushed by Mouse, the rest of the team looking increasingly uncomfortable. "Shhhh! I know, I know! No copies, no backups blah blah. That rule is idiotic and you know it. There is no way in hell we could make software updates and upgrades without regular access to the code, that's just not possible, but of course the suits wouldn't believe us. They're more worried about covering their asses than the project itself. So, we had to, err, bend the rules a little...it's not the full thing! It's just the base code, y'know? None of the personality or intelligence or anything. Just so we can test compatibility and build off it. No sentience at all!"

Mouse brings the copy up on a small laptop, the code being, for the most part, identical to Pandora's. "So, what we're thinking is...maybe some of this backup may have gotten left on one of the upgrades we gave her...and err...was mucking her systems up a little. Like an echo of sorts. But you fixed it, right? So, er, no harm, no foul, right?"
>Demand she purge the copy, if she gets caught there could be trouble
>Allow her to keep it, they realistically can't make any kind of software upgrade without it (slows all future software upgrade progress)

Oops, I got those flipped. Purging the copy slows the software progress. Sorry about the mix-up, guys!
>>
>>43119228
>>Demand she purge the copy, if she gets caught there could be trouble
We might as well give the bad man full access to the internet if we don't sink this now. And if the bad man got loose and caused any kind of a problem there would be 7 different flavors of hell to pay.

>Allow her to keep it, they realistically can't make any kind of software upgrade without it (slows all future software upgrade progress)
Just make sure that if the G-man gets suspicious, purge the whole thing. If he finds backdoors on Pandora and gets a CIA team to be able to alter her software, they might try to alter Pandora's parameters with an update.

Also, "slows down upgrade progress"? You sure you didn't mix them up?

You pinch the bridge of your nose, thinking hard about the current situation. You realize the situation the R&D team has been put it, but at the same time this copy could jeopardize the whole thing. Still, they have been pretty good at keeping things secretive thus far. Namely the fact that they have access to what should be secure cameras.

"Fine." You concede, sighing. "You can keep it. But for god's sake, keep it isolated and hidden as much as possible. And no more mistakes with the software updates! I want all traces of the old code gone next time you send me new software. Clear?"
"Crystal, boss!" Mouse says, slapping you on the shoulder. "Had me worried for a minute there! You could give a girl a heart attack makin' her wait like that! But no worries, now that we know what the issue was, we'll keep it from happening again, cross me heart!" You hope for everyone's sake she's right.

I think I'll call it here, as I am getting a little tired and it's rather late. But thanks all of you for playing! I'll stick around for a little bit to answer questions. If you liked the quest, please vote for it on the archives and follow me on Twitter to get more updates! The next quest will be tomorrow night at the same time!
