It has been roughly one generation since "the habbening", (at least, that's how it's referred to in your house). Your mother and father remember the world as it once was, a place both marvelous and terrifying, filled with wonders of technology, engineering and entertainment. As much as people complained, they had it much better back then, at least that's the one thing the old folk agree on.

Your father identified himself as a "/k/ommando" and attributed his prewar hobbies and pursuits to his success and survival. He was a gun collector, an amateur survivalist and a general jack of all trades. Once the dust settled and civilization picked itself back together, his once full time occupation of "survivor" fell to the wayside and the old jobs of the old world came back in full force. So your family became sharecroppers, farmers who worked the soil to earn their keep and the right to armed protection. A once impressive firearms collection was sold to buy agricultural tools, seeds and feed. Now all that's left is his prized rifle, known simply as "Nugget", which hangs above the fireplace mantle. It's occasionally used for hunting, but for the most part it sits as farmhouse decoration.

Until now.

A large group of nomadic raiders have been causing trouble for neighboring villages to the west. Your mother and father were conscripted for the county's defense months ago, leaving you alone to fend for yourself. The canned foods in the cellar have started to run thin, fewer villagers can be seen through town, and the plumes of smoke out in the distance are a foreboding reminder of what might happen to the life you've grown accustomed to. As a headstrong young man of 19, you decide to do something about it. You will not stand idly while the innocent suffer from the hands of savages, you will not allow the hard work of your father to end in vain. There is little point in staying on this dying farm, so you gather your things a head on down the lonely road.

You decided to visit your closest neighbor, Old Craig. His cabin was about a half hour’s walk from your farm and, upon your approach, he greeted you with a shotgun in hand. Craig was never too friendly, though, and didn’t take kindly to your uninvited arrival. Good for you the old hunter was only cautious, and shouldered the weapon without bloodshed. He could tell that you were off to do something brave but stupid. He insisted that joining the militia, (the one that conscripted your parents), would be a bad idea, and that your best choice was to simply head eastward and never look back. Such fatalistic ideals offend your sense of optimism, and it seems that Old Craig won’t be much help on your “quest”.

Do you:

>A: Decide to stop wasting time with stupid old men, turn around and leave. If Old Craig isn’t going to help you then fuck him, he’s always been a hateful dick and doesn’t deserve love or respect from anyone. Maybe there’s news back in town, maybe there’s a caravan looking for guards and roustabouts, or maybe the mayor needs to recruit more patrolmen for town security.

>B: Respect a man who’s three times your own age and admit that he is right and that you are too young and stupid to see the error of your ways. Then, offer to do some work for him. He is an old man who lives alone in a small cabin in the woods, after all. He could probably use the help.

>C: Cold clock the fucker and, once he’s down on the ground, slit his throat and leave him to die. A guy as old as Craig probably has some pretty good loot lying around here somewhere…

You run your fingers through your hair and kick at the dirt nervously. It's been a while since an adult made you feel like a complete dumb ass. No, it wasn't very smart to just grab dad's gun and run off into the woods to fight bad guys. Maybe Old Craig is right.

You raise your head and look the hunter right in the eye. His thoughts and emotions are hidden behind a wall of wrinkled skin and weathered clothes, the very same demeanor that's always made you terrified of the village elders. "Yeah, maybe you're right, Mr. Craig. Sorry for scaring you like that, wasn't very polite to show up unannounced. While I'm here, do you think I could do some work around the cabin?"

Craig rubs his chin as he walks gingerly back to the cabin. "Well... I got some beaver traps down at the river that need checkin' on. Put 'em there a couple days ago and never got 'round to lookin' after 'em. I got 'em tagged with red bandannas, so's they're easy to spot."

Before you turn to leave he grabs your shoulder. "Careful out there, Cosmo. Ain't too sure, but I think there's strangers sneakin' about the woods at night. Can't find any footprints or trash, but there are a lot of broken branches, 'bout shoulder height, between here and Bundyville. I ain't been the one makin' 'em, so you be careful."

There are two primary routes to Old Craig's beaver traps:

>A: Head down to the bridge where river front access is flat and easy, but also muddy and messy. Many boots have been lost in this swampland, and many fools have been swept away by the river and dashed against its rocks.

>B: The Lookout, a security post ran by the county militia, has a steep wooden stairway leading to the river, which is about sixty feet down from the sheer edge of the cliff. Supposedly, county property is off limits to private citizens who don't work for the local government, so the bridge ought to be outside your reach. It is, however, the shortest route to Old Craig's traps.

You thank Craig for the information and go about your errand with renewed confidence. Since you have romped about these woods for your entire life, you know them as well as anyone, and fortunately there is a convenient trail that passes through a few properties to get to the lower road. The area is alive with the sounds of wilderness, and everything seems peaceful and quiet. There are no cows to be seen or heard, nor is there the familiar baying of a donkey. Most of the cattle has either died of starvation, eaten by wolves or butchered by starving farmers. The remaining citizens are mostly drinking themselves to death. You casually wonder how long till the booze runs out. Then you wonder how long till the barrel of a gun starts to look appetizing.

After an hour of existential thoughts you spot the crest of Look Out tower. An old corrugated metal building serves as a small barracks for posted militiamen while a chain link fence surrounds the entire area. From the front gate you can spot the staircase that leads down to the river, but up above a person in a wide brim hat spies you with a pair of binoculars that glint in the morning sun. Whoever they are, they can certainly see you, though they make no attempt at communication.

You decide to wave your arms in broad visible motions. The figure waves back and calls out to you with a surprisingly feminine voice, "Hey there! If you need something, throw your gun over the fence and I'll come down to talk to you. Otherwise, turn around and don't come back!"

Your options are

>A. Throw the rifle over the fence and wait for the sentinel to approach.

>B. Turn around and take the longer route by the bridge.

"Sorry," you yell back, "I don't want to hurt you, but I don't want to give up my rifle, either. I'm just trying to get to the river."

"Okay!" she yells back, waving her hand excitedly, "if you empty the magazine, I'll let you pass, alright?"

"Deal!" You do as she says, cycling the rounds out in rapid succession. You notice that the bolt doesn't work as smoothly as you'd like, which leads you to wonder when the last time anyone cleaned the Nugget.

With the heavy rifle back on your shoulder, the sentinel slides down the ladder and soundly thumps the ground with the heels of her heavy boots. Hand held firmly on a holstered pistol, she approaches you quickly but cautiously. Soon enough you realize that she's surprisingly pretty for a woman in uniform, and she doesn't look much older than you. Her name tag reads, "Sgt. Saunders."

"Alright, civilian. You said you want to get down to the river? What for?" Her eyes dart around your face to your feet, her speech shaken and nervous.

"A neighbor sent me to check his beaver traps," you state with a brusque tone.

"And what do you need that musket for?" she asks, indicating to the long barrel poking over your right shoulder.

She starts to laugh, filling the green canopy above with joy and elation. Once she catches her breath, Sgt. Saunders covers her mouth and regains her composure. "Heh, alright, that's a pretty good one. There hasn't been a wolf spotted within this county for the past twenty years. At least, that's what the records say. I may have only been posted here for a month, but I'm not a stupid greenhorn. Now, unless there's some trouble you don't want to tell me about, I think it'd be best if you let me hold onto that rifle while you check those traps. "Old Craig thinks there's strangers stalking about the woods. At least that's his suspicion, anyway. I tend to trust what he has to say, so I'm trying to play it safe."

The sudden revelation hits her with terrifying clarity. This is a woman who liked her cozy job, safe up on the top of a tower in some podunk town. This isn't supposed to be a place where tragedies happen. "Sounds like forward scouts for the raiders, but unlikely. Their nearest foothold is miles and miles away. Besides that, I would have seen them by now."

"Craig thinks they're moving at night."

"Shit..." the sentinel bites her lip and turns to face the nearby cliff, then looks back to you with furrowed brow. "Pick up those rounds and reload your gun. I'm going down there with you." Sgt. Saunders opens the metal gate draws her pistol, a modern reproduction of the Colt New Service, and checks to make sure its loaded and functioning.

The two of you peek over the edge and down into the river valley. There aren't any trees by the water below, and the grass and weeds aren't tall enough to hide a grown man. Saunders scans the area with her binoculars and frowns. The only movement is down at the mill, where a horse drawn car is being loaded with sacks of flour by two distant figures. The sentinel directs you to walk go first.

Taking the stairs may have been a mistake. The structure is old and badly in need of repairs, event by the groaning planks that strain to hold your weight as you make your descent.

"Any news from the front?"

"Radio's been quiet for a while, but that's not uncommon. Sometimes the towers run out of fuel, or the generators break down, or the equipment just doesn't want to work. Last I heard Carlsburg was taken by the raiders, apparently they're using it as a staging ground for future attacks, but that was about four days ago. Makes me nervous, to be honest."

Soon enough you reach the bottom and spot a red bandanna. Unfortunately, the nearby trap was activated but empty. The only firm ground leads north upstream. A couple minutes later you spot another trap with a fat dead beaver stuck in its jaws. You open the device and bag the animal.

You continue your trek upstream when you notice what looks like a covert along the other side of the river, just behind a thicket of bushes. You think it might make a good spot for someone to hide, but before you can consider the matter further the distinct sound of a cartridge being loaded into a chamber echoes across the stone formations behind you, and two strange men come into view from the covert.

Their faces are obscured and they wear a motley assortment of tactical vests and holsters. One holds a lever action rifle at his shoulder, his finger poised on the trigger, while his friend holds a SAA aloft in your direction.

"Right. Drop yer fuckin' weapons. Right fuckin' now." They don't yell, electing to speak with clear, harsh tones, and by the hate in their eyes you figure they mean business.

BOOM! POW! The Nugget goes off like a cannon while Saunders' .45 pops its own thunderous retort. White smoke clouds your vision, but as the wind drifts it away you see two fallen bodies laying on the sandbar across the river. The one you shot is laying in a splattered mess of his own blood and entrails, silent and dead, while his friend cries in agony next to him. The flowing water between is brown and looks to be running fast. You know it gets pretty deep through here, too. The Water Mill and the mayor's residence isn't far from here; it seems likely that someone heard the gun fire. Once your heart stops beating so loudly, you catch your breath and look to your companion, who is just as surprised. Behind her you spot two bullet holes of equal size burrowed into the granite.
>>

>SAA
Oh Zack you are just hitting all of my favorite guns right now.

Anyway, I'm going with A.
Shoot the lever-action guy first, since the SAA's single-action it still needs to be cocked, and since it's notorious for firing when dropped, with any luck he didn't load the first cylinder.
>>
>>43133023
Loot the bodies. Take the SAA, we could use a pistol since the Nagant is long as hell and clunky if we go indoors, and Saunders can take the lever-action so she can be more effective if we need to go at a far range.

>>
>>43133064
>"Holy shit! I think we got kinda lucky there!"

Saunders smiles and nods. She doesn't look hit; there's no visible blood from where you're standing. "Heh, yeah. It's kinda sad, but that's the first man I ever killed." She's visibly shaken, and reaches into her jacket pocket to produce a cigarette. She lights it with a match and inhales deeply. "Fuck. It's not exactly safe to pass the river here, is it?"

"It's kinda high," you reply, "and the current is stronger than it looks. That's what makes it such a good spot for a water mill, y'know?"

Before any solutions can be posited, the familiar voices of local men shout from the southern side of the river. Saunders grabs a brass whistle from her tool belt and blows three quick notes that pierce through the air. The yelling suddenly stops. A man in a patrol cap soon appears over the ridge. "Sgt. Saunders? Has someone been shot?"

"Correct," she states flatly as she exhales, "looks like two raiders, me and a deputized civilian shot them after they tried to rob us."

"What side a' the river they on?"

"Your side, captain. One of 'em is still alive, but bleeding."

"Right. We'll be down in a bit." The man disappears and you hear a commotion of feet and hushed voices. It seems as though the remaining patrolmen are looking to do their job, (for once), and assess the scene before any further actions are taken.

I working Vickers will be hard to find. I'm sure its upkeep and hard to find ammo will make it nonexistent for this quest. I'm not throwing in guns just because /K/ happens to have a fetish for them, (though that is a good reason).

I went ahead and did it. http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=/K/ommando%20Quest

So, we've got a fair ways to go before bump limit, and QM is supposed to come back. What're ya'alls favorite guns? Post pics while we wait.

I'd love to get my hands on a Turnbull custom, just to have as a range toy. Some of the prettiest weapons on earth.
>>
I haven't shot many but of the ones I have shot, I'd say it would be my .45 acp Kimber 1911.

I'd love a Chiappa in .454.

The patrolmen clumsily slid their way down to the river bed before making an itemized inventory of the raiders’ possessions. Inside the covert was a couple of bedrolls, two day packs, a map case and a journal written in some unrecognizable language. Oddly enough, the fuckers had been looting Old Craig’s fur traps, too. Despite your insistence that you intent to return the pelts to their rightful owner, the red nosed patrolman stated firmly, “this is a crime scene and those furs are evidence of a crime. They will remain property of the Bundyville Guard until the crime report has been filed, reviewed, approved and logged into the public record. If Old Craig wants them, he can petition the mayor himself.”

Saunders looks primed to mouth off, but holds her cool when she realises that she’s still stuck on the north side of Leaf River. The sergeant lights another cigarette and offers you one as a consolation. “Sorry kid. Sometimes the law gets in the way of justice. I should know. The good thing is there weren’t any innocent people hurt.” She pauses, staring at the drifting waters while smoke billows from her nostrils. Her focus turns back to you, her eyes searching for comfort and meaning, but only finding a teenage farm boy she barely knows. “I hate to see raiders this far into the territory. Means the fight’s coming to us, sooner than later. You think you’re ready for that?”

"I'm not sure anyone is ever really ready for that. But I'll do what I have to if it comes to that."

Proceed to check any remaining traps.

I'll support this. It's a reasonable, mature course of action.

Also, can we get a list of our skills? Just so we can get a direction for possible training.

"I'm not sure anyone is ever really ready for that. But I'll do what I have to if it comes to that."

Saunders smiles. It’s obvious that she thinks your affable determination is endearing if not admirable. The two of you say your goodbyes and head off on your separate paths, the sergeant back up the stairs to her post while you trudge up stream to find more traps. You find six more traps but only one beaver, which is good enough since your ALICE pack is now stuffed to the brim along with all the other supplies. The cliff slowly turns into a manageable incline along the way. You find an old trail that brings you back up to idle road. The sun now sits high in the sky and you’ve been walking for about two hours since the shootout. You’re starting to feel pretty hungry, and your canteen is feeling light. Bringing Old Craig his furs is the reasonable course of action, but then again you are still the master of your own destiny.

There was a girl you liked, a couple years younger than you, by the name of Cathy. She was the daughter of a dairy farmer not far from here. You wonder if her family is still around, or even alive. The two of you never had much interaction, your parents were strict about time spent between boys and girls, especially at your age. Prophylactics were rare and expensive, and the last thing anyone wanted was a pregnant daughter. Not that anyone really expected that to happen, but when there’s only two teenagers in a small town the parents get cautious. Things are different now, though. Your parents are gone, hers might be too. What if Cathy needs protecting?

Yo, QM. A thing that some QM's do is write in suggestions that the character would naturally think of or preform. It gives each update and the players structure. You can keep the innovative stuff or the "right" answer to problems/issues in your head though. Can't spoonfeed anons. They usually get things right on their own. Oh, and one last word of advice. Anons hate "trap" options. Might want to stay away from such tomfoolery lest you provoke a doodoo dustup, or even a shitstorm.
>>
>>43135217
Go to her homestead I guess. Even if they're all set, we can see if they have any stuff they need and would like to trade for. We also ought to warn them at least, of the raiders that snuck so close to their home.

>>43135217
what the hell, might as well go and see Cathy, who knows, she might have some cool supplies or some shit.

Dress out the beavers, will lighten the load. Head back to craigs

>>43135320
What exactly do you mean by "trap options"
>>
>>43135525
Options you as the QM know will cause terrible things to happen.
>>
>>43135532
Why is that a bad thing?

Guys I'm probably going to bed soon. I'm getting too drunk for writing and drawing. I'll probably have a DnD game to play tomorrow, so I don't know when I'll be back on. If I do intend to continue, I'll post it an hour or more in advance on the quest twitter @kommando_quest

Basically, never put up an option you're not willing to write, or an option that's 100% suicidal. People will almost always choose said option because they're dicks. So now you either ignore them, (and they get mad) or follow them (which you either don't want to write or how to write, or kills the MC and ends the quest.)

With your choices you should add an 'Other' choice as well.
