From 1d4chan:

"Night Shift is a setting and resources for running a horror-game. It is the brainchild of a collaboration of some anons on /tg/. Players are employees working the night shift at a gas station on the lonely side of nowhere. They must balance the drudgery of their mundane duties and responsibilities with the uncanny, preternatural, supernatural, and paranormal events which seem to happen at this particular gas station."

This project may be dead, but I'm making this thread as one last shot at potential revival. I'll dump everything I have that isn't available on the 1d4chan page: http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Night_Shift

I was actually going to try and get my friends to run a game with me last summer, but my life got flipped turned upside down (dad died) so that threw the entire thing. I'll probably try to get them to run a game over winter break with me
>>
>>43185263

That's terrible news, anon, I'm sorry. I never had a chance to run Night Shift because a) I haven't been able to find the time, and because b) I'm a stubborn moron who doesn't want to spend the time figuring out the Apocalypse World system.
>>
>>43185473
My friends are really lazy when it comes to learning new systems, so i was probably going to just half ass it and rely more on story telling and minimal rolling. More of a pass, fail, crit success, crit fail, kind of D20 thing. Thanks man, shit sucks, he was the greatest

Word of advice, Night Shift is more about the setting than the mechanics so anything pretty light on rules works just fine. I used Unknown Armies whenever I ran it and everybody had a great time.
>>
>>43186266

Regardless, which mechanical system do you think would work best?
>>
>>43186366
Like I said I've only got experience using Unknown Armies but CoC would also work if you want to play something more long term, focusing on how working at the station affects the PCs. If you want something really loose and bare bones you could do the Everyone is John thing and have each player write down two or three skills the PC has and settle all rolls with a d6. It really comes down to how you want to run the game.

I've got no experience with Dungeon World or GURPS but people seem to recommend them a lot on here.
>>
Damn, I guess there's not many people around that remember the night shift. It survives on in the hearts and minds of a few anons
>>
>>43189116
I think the thing of it is that we have enough half finished collections of fluff and scenario seeds that it's possible for the guys from the old threads to take the idea and run with it in their own groups but it's difficult for new people to get the idea since a lot of the finer points are buried in the old threads and the heads of the people that were writing fluff.

What we really need to reinvigorate the idea is get a solid overview of the setting on the 1d4chan page so new people know what they're in for. I've noticed that every now and then someone makes a new Night Shift thread and a few new people ask questions about it but they never get much of an answer more complete than "it's about a gas station and weird stuff happens, the old threads were really good."
>>
>>43189372
I actually just started reading the old threads again. I can't make any promises because of work and school taking most of my time, but I can try to get a basic summary going as I read through the threads again
>>
https://soundcloud.com/panstach/z-jae-c-i-f-e-el-y-ou
I used to open and close all of my Night Shift sessions with this track.

One of the old fluff/scenario writers here. Man, those early threads and the games my group played gave me some of my fondest rpg memories. What's it been two, three years since the first thread?

I feel like I should share a bit about what my group says are their favorite NPCs I've ever given them; Dave and Sarah.

Dave was the night manager of the Gas N' Go (or "Ass N' Go" as the vandalized sign out front would have you believe). Sarah was the ghost of some punk girl that worked at The Station during the 80s until one night she was killed by a wendigo. Two loose character concepts some anons were toying around with in the old threads that I decided to run with.

Dave was in his late twenties, but looked like he was in his late thirties. He was angry, jaded and liked to fuck with the new guys. Sarah died young and was earnestly trying to make the best of being a ghost bound to the shitty job that got her killed. She also liked to fuck with the new guys.

I played them like two sides of the same coin. Sort of a good cop-bad cop routine. When the rag-tag group of meth heads, EDM burnouts and convicts that were the PCs had to face down whatever weirdness doomed The Station on any particular night Dave was always there to yell at them for doing it wrong and Sarah was always there to help in whatever way her incorporeal form could. The PCs didn't like Dave. Not at first.

See, Dave was the night manager but that didn't mean he had any real authority, it was just the title Management gave to the only guy that managed to show up for work every night and not get killed for almost ten years. He and Sarah shared a friendship that could only form through seniority at a terrible job. They looked out for each other, she kept him alive and he kept her sane.

Cont...
>>
>>43190723
Most nights Dave would hand a PC their list of chores for the night and tell them to get the fuck to it while he took care of paperwork in the manager's office and talked with Sarah. He only left the office on the rare occasion that the weirdness got so out of control that he had no choice but to step in and help out. First impressions would suggest that he was just a dickhead boss that didn't like getting his hands dirty but in reality, after all these years at The Station, Dave was tired of watching co-workers die. He didn't want anybody to know that but the PCs eventually caught on and started warming up to him. He didn't like it, forming attachments only gave him something to lose. There was a reason his only real friend was a literal ghost.

One night the weirdness got to him. An auditory plague of murderous joy spread through a song on a misplaced radio infected him and a gas station full of customers. A few lucky attendants, with warning from Sarah, stormed The Station with nothing but tools from the garage and iPod headphones on full blast and beat their way through the customers looking for the radio. Eventually they found it.

In the manager's office.

With Dave.

They could have just bashed Dave's head in like they had with so many other NPCs in so many other games but they chose not to. They set their weapons down and tried to subdue Dave while harming him as little as possible, hoping they could fix the radio or smash it once it was away from him and he was out of danger. I still consider the look on their faces when Dave gave them a strained but heartfelt "thank you" my proudest moment as a GM.

That was the last session we played. I ran out of ideas and it seemed like as good a place to end as any, but to this day I look back on Night Shift fondly not just as a cool little idea that really got my creative juices flowing but as the game that made my players care.

I think my favorite part of night shift is I used to work nights at a grocery store, and when the sun goes down some strange characters used to come in. There was a hippie that used to come in every other night for cigars. Looked like he stepped out of 1969 and into the store. For all I know, he could've. Everybody knew what kind of cigars he wanted, and I don't remember him ever speaking

>>43184855
I'm actually looking at using this to roleplay weird shit that happens at closing where I work. Seriously, just the other day:

>be me
>20 going on 21, working at McD's to get a car
>Gotta clean the grills, the equipment, etc etc
>The last thing we do during the night is take out the last of the day's trash to the Dumpsters out back. My Manager and I were in the small office in the back wracking our brains to make sure we didn't miss anything
>We've just decided that that's all that's left to do when Camera 17 goes black
>Camera 17
>The camera that's aimed right at the Dumpsters
>The trash is never taken out that night.

I'm hoping that taking the weird happenstance at McD's and adding a supernatural element could make for a fun game or two.
>>
We should just post things that seem normal on the outside that have happened at our jobs, that can be used as seeds for night shift events. I'm >>43195300 and I'll try to think of some other stories. One night we had a group of bikers with their wives/girlfriends roll into our parking lot and have a mini bbq. They came in and bought all the rolls, hotdogs, and burgers they needed, and partied in our parking lot.
Could be turned into a group of bikers that look like they just rolled out of the mid '60s because they did. Possibly being chased by a group of cops from the same time period
>>
We've had some weird things happen in our warehouse too. Each receiving bay has one of those sheet metal rolling doors to close it off from the outside. The doors are operated just by a metal chain. Employees have told me that occasionally the chains will rattle like someone is trying to get your attention, too strong to just be wind. The occasional can of soup, or vegetables will also fall off of pallets and roll towards people, never away. Keep in mind that the only time soup falls off a pallet is in a gloriously catastrophic way, such as the entire pallet collapsing. Never just one
>>
Once I can get my ass out of work I'll try to see if I can't add some more OC weirdness to this thread. I really don't want to see this die like the other revival threads.

I should be good for more quirks and threats, and could try my hand at some more writing.
>>
>>43199545
I'm going to keep dropping odd stories from work to keep this thread alive. Might throw in some from my college that can also be worked into the night shift with a bit of rewording
>>
Fuck yeah Night Shift thread! I'll have to put the Fiasco playset I have yet to actually run up here when I get home today. Unless someone else has it first.

Funnily enough I'm working the nigh shift tonight, if anything strange happens I'll be sure to post it if the thread is still around.

So there's these creepy maintenence tunnels at school that run to every building on campus. What about a scenario where you need to go fix the circuit breaker for the station (lest a ghost steals from the store or something) but the circuit breaker is located in the partially flooded maintenence tunnel beneath the stations property. Just be careful, the last night shift manager that went down there was never heard from again
>>
>A nondescript eighteen-wheeler with faded decals pulls into the Station one shift. The Attendants see the equally nondescript and shabby driver leave the cab of the truck and amble around the vehicle as if to fill up the fuel tank, but as soon as they take their eyes off the man he seems to disappear into the night, leaving his rig idling in front of the pumps. When the Attendants to out to investigate, they discover that the truck's trailer is full of:

- Dozens of identical, simple-minded copies of the Attendants, dressed in simple hospital-style gowns, penned up like cattle.

- A single gargantuan, ornery alligator with the name "LARGE LEMMY" spray painted on his sides.

- A recreation of an exceedingly cozy living room in which a real and exceedingly gruesome murder has been committed.

- Thousands upon thousands of standard yellow telephone books stacked in sealed pallets one on top of the next. Each book has had certain numbers highlighted inside with no explanation provided as to why.

- A large supercomputer that has bee carefully mounted and securely mounted at the center of the rig. It appears to be crunching Gs way through some astronomically complex algorithm.

- A shipment of small rubber super-balls filling the entire trailer. When the door is open they are all released, bouncing crazily everywhere.

One shift the stores radio starts to fizzle in and out with static. When reception comes back, the radio station has the same name, but is different in subtle ways.

>The announcer is now a male who in a somber tone is telling you of the state of the world during the newsbreaks. As the news goes on the announcer starts to sound more grave, and older. It starts with the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, and ends with the nuclear strike on Manhatten (or similar catastrophic event that's yet to happen)
>Classic rock is now current rock
>H.G. Well's war of the world's starts to play. In the distance are flashes much like heat lightning, except green, and much more rapid
>The radio station is now picking up a substation, and if you listen carefully you can hear police chatter of a swat raid that's gone wrong. Abnormally wrong, as the gunmen are small grey men with large black eyes

WHOOOOO NIGHT SHIFT THREAD

I lurked those threads obsessively when they came around, and swore that if I EVER became a GM I would run The Night Shift.
Been a GM for about a year now, about halfway into my second campaign. I already told my group as soon as we finish this one we'll have an intermission session, where they will be working at a certain gas station where things are just a bit... off...

SOOOOO HAPPY TO SEE A THREAD ABOUT IT
>>
I so want to run this system. it looks so erie and fun
>>
I feel like roll tables have been played for this ages ago. Mechanics would be badass for it in different systems, or as its own thing.

What a really would like though, for this thread, is more Night Shift writefaggotry. I feel like the greentexts and stories really inspire me more then the roll tables do, anyway. Anyone want to give it a go?
>>
>>43206073
I've got a few bits of minor weirdness I don't think I ever posted in the old threads...
>First Aid kit has different stuff in it all the time
-Leeches
-Healing potions
-Defibrillator wired directly to the box, still works somehow
-Needle and thread
-Can of chicken soup and ginger ale (Cures any illness)
-Contents of a toolkit
-Medieval surgical tools
-Syringe full of green liquid
-One scalpel
-Wad of clay (takes shape of anything it is molded into but turns into the subject’s flesh)
-A book of uplifting poems
-A kitten/puppy
-Jumper cables

>Mirror malfunctions
-Plays the twist reveal of movies on a loop
-Show’s sad memories from an Attendant's childhood
-Is sometimes helpful to the scenario
-Functions normally except it shows whoever is looking at it from the back
-Shows a fat guy in one of the stalls eating a whole roast chicken
-Shows the Attendant with an increasing number of cuts/bruises on their face
-All skeletons

>Money arrives in an envelope on attendant’s doorstep when they do well, in increasingly strange/threatening ways when they do poorly
-Cash stuffed in a dead raccoon's mouth
-Envelope nailed to their door with a railroad spike
-Number amount of cash is carved/burned into the wall, attendant finds money in bank account. If they don’t have a bank account they do now
-An ex lover drops off a wad of cash absently saying they “forgot they had it”
-Cash stuffed in the attendant’s mouth when they wake up
-The next time they open their wallet spiders crawl out but they have more money
-The next book the attendant reads has one dollar/coin on every page adding up to the amount of money he earned for the night

Like the two Anons above, I think that you and your cohort did a very good job at conveying all the essentials of the Night Shift setting.

While it doesn't seem that one often has much in the way of descriptive set dressing in your standard television pilot pitch, the setting and direction cues that you do have do a great job of establishing the Station as a lonely, isolated, and eerie place with only a thin veneer of normalcy.

I think that you did a great job with characterizing a bunch of Attendants living on the fringes and working a dangerous job that they hate because it's all they're qualified for and all they can find. They feel convincingly surly and standoffish, but you made sure that no character was without their charms or was ultimately unlikeable. You've also got a good everyman going with College Chris, making him just enough of an outsider to make him an audience surrogate while keeping him believable.

The story you both came up with was good, and I think that starting the pilot with College Chris being shoved into a managerial position by a senior Attendant jumping ship was a smart move. I liked the three plotlines you established: the Grey Man, the thing in the basement, and the bird bones. To my mind, the introduction of the Grey Man is perfect for a pilot episode as it establishes both the tone of the show and a recurring character, and I think that you handled the Grey Man, his appearance and his mannerisms really well. The other two stories fit in well with the primary, though I do think that they might have been able to be the focus of stand-alone episodes too.

All in all, a really well done pilot for a really interesting idea. I want to believe that someone, somewhere, sometime would want to pick this up for a television run or maybe a miniseries. I wouldn't give up all hope just yet!

It's been one of those shifts.

No, not one of the crazy ones.

Sure, the mirror in the women's bathroom is on the fritz again, but that mirror's never really worked quite right and throwing your hair into a ponytail is easy enough even with a reversed reflection. And of course, the Grey Man came in for his nightly Choco-Delite Bar, but the Grey Man's always been a polite and grateful customer as long as you're prompt and professional about sating his candy fix. No, tonight hasn't been one of your crazier shifts, and while you know that you should be thankful for not having to deal with a fruitbat infestation or another legion of shadow people out to overthrow the "tyranny of the corporeal," right now you don't feel thankful.

You feel...

Sleepy...

You feel so very sleepy...

In fact, you feel so sleepy that you just want to lay your head down on the counter and take a nap. That jerk Carlos already claimed the couch in the breakroom an hour ago when he finished restocking the Soyl-Os and you haven't seen or heard from him since. Which is strange, come to think of it, because Carlos usually snores like a buzz saw. Looking blearily out one of the large plate glass windows in the front of the Station, you catch a glimpse of yourself reflected in the glass.

Yikes. You look like shit. Tired and strung out.

Pale too.

So sleepy...

Looking past your reflection, you can see Mark out under the fluorescent lights, leaning against one of the pumps, arms folded against his chest, headphones of his Walkman covering his ears, baseball cap tugged down low, covering his eyes. You've kind of got a thing for Mark, but you know better than to fool around with co-workers. You've seen what happens to kids that screw in horror movies, and besides, you don't get to be Employee of the Month for a year and a half straight at this Station by being brainless.
>>
>>43214001
No, you're good. You've got a handle on this little crush. You'll keep things professional. It looks like Mark is tired as Hell too though. Yeah, his head just drooped there, like he's nodding off. He caught himself doing it.

Once, twice, three times...

He's gone. He's gone. He just disappeared. Mark just nodded off or fell asleep or something and he just disappeared. Just like that, in front of your eyes.

Shit!

When was the last time you saw Carlos again? An hour? More? What time is it even anyway? And why are you this fucking tired? This is not good. Al was supposed to be sweeping the store when... Did you just nod off yourself just now? You feel like you've lost a couple minutes there. This really isn't good at all.

Shit!

You can still hear Al sweeping, which is good, but you can hear him yawning too, which isn't good. You call out to him across the aisles, your normally shrill voice you kind of hate thick and sleepy.

"Al... hey, Al...! I need you to inventory all the coffee and sugary drinks we've got in stock right now while I go check on Carlos. Mark just disappeared and I think we've got a problem..."

As someone who legit works the night shift (not at a gas station; white collar office bitch) this is of interest to me.

A lot of us have had jobs with a touch of the Night Shift in them. Having worked overnights both at a gas station in highschool and doing IT as an adult, I can attest that things can get weird when you work a crappy job late into the night.

You skid to a halt in front of the grimy green door at the back of the break room, forcing yourself to pause, one tremulous hand outstretched toward the tarnished brass knob, breath hitching in your chest as those familiar words stenciled in chipped gold and green paint on the frosted glass catch your eye.

General Managers' Office.

You shudder involuntarily and take a moment to collect yourself, straightening out your Assistant Manager's uniform, carefully picking a few stray glass shards out of your bun and slapping your cheeks a couple times to try and bring some color to that pale face of yours. Donning your best Employee of the Month smile, you take a deep breath and open the door, stepping inside the Office as you hear Carlos howl and the rest of the storefront windows shatter, your makeshift barricade breached by the... Things... surrounding the Station.

Even as the Assistant Manager with two years' experience on the Night Shift, you still find going into the General Managers Office to be one of the most unpleasant and unnerving experience the job has to offer. Calmly crossing the shabby carpet to the desk in the center of the room, you cant help but think that the feeling is pretty close to what being inside a fish tank must be like, what with the furnishings that seemed to serve a purely decorative purpose, the diffuse greenish light that bathed everything, and the unshakable feeling that you were being closely watched.

You reach for the handset of the sickly green telephone set atop the battered metal desk, neither bothering nor needing to enter any particular contact number on the rotary dial. There are the usual clicks and pops, a dial tone and a low whistle before you hear the receiver pick up on the other end of the line, your breath once more catching in your throat, your heart hammering in your chest as a chill runs up your spine.

"You haven't had to call us in some time, have you Sarah. What seems to be the problem?"

Anonymous 03/10/14(Mon)17:07 No.30760784

Decided to try and play this with a simple system I homebrewed in like 5 minutes.

>Had PCs roll standard D&D stats with percentile dice to determine ability scores
>Use roll under skill checks to determine shit, kind of like a really bootleg Call of Cthulhu (I had no rulebooks or anything on me at the time, only a set of dice I take pretty much everywhere)
>Pretty good stats, both rolled really shit Strength though (under 10%)
>First scenario is skinwalkers
>Nothing really happening in the day, quickly turns to the night shift
>PCs have to stock the store, trucker named Geoff is outback waiting for them to get their shit so he can go
>They start to unload
>All of the sudden Geoff is talking to some dude
>"Who the fuck are you?"
>It's just some random dude standing in front of him
>PCs know something is up
>Geoff tells the guy to fuck off, but he just stays there and mumbles unintelligibly
>One PC knows of the skinwalker pastas and I could tell he was making assumptions about it already
>>
>>43214528
>They both take some boxes inside, seeing what happens after they leave for a bit
>Random guy is gone
>Geoff is just there, getting back into his truck
>But something is off about him
>He's missing his goatee
>Skinwalker-aware PC knows what's going on now and decides to run to the truck and provoke it
>Needed to have it be somewhat hostile, not just docile and really creepy, so I just gave it razor sharp fingers.
>It jams its fingers through the glass and almost kills him
>Both of them nope the fuck out of there and run inside
>Barricade the doors with boxes of shit
>Skinwalker prowls the perimeter of the station, tapping and scraping its diamond-edge fingers along the glass windows, but never breaking through
>All of the sudden a letter falls through a mail opening in the back door
>Signed "From Management"
>The letter reads "Ashes, Ashes, we all fall down."
>>
>>43214541
>PCs decide to look around for anything useful
>They find a padlocked safe below the counter
>One of them decides to try and pry it open with a crowbar they picked up from the outside
>Succeeds, inside is a silver crucifix
>They both make the connection that it was the crucifix that was keeping the skinwalker at bay
>This wasn't actually so, but I liked the idea so much that I made it so.
>They take the crucifix to the window
>The skinwalker recoils back in fear
>They get some duct tape and tape the symbol to the crowbar
>Head out and begin to bludgeon the fucking thing to death
>The crucifix sears it skins as it makes contact, it desperately tries to retreat into the night but fails
>They kill it
>It releases an ear-piercing screech from hell
>More skinwalkers come up from the distance
>PCs get on the roof to confirm
>"Yep, more of them"
>They're trying to figure out what to do to live
>Bunch of ideas thrown around, like park Geoff's truck in front of the store and block their way into the station
>All of the sudden the letter comes back to them
>"We gotta fucking burn em"
>They get matches, plastic gas containers and pumps ready
>Circle the station with a ring of gasoline
>Set it ablaze as the skinwalkers are within 10 feet
>Fire everywhere
>Skinwalkers burning
>Gas containers thrown into the crowd like molotovs and explode fucking everywhere
>Skinwalkers are repelled
>All is well in the middle of nowhere
>Another letter comes through the back door
>"Well done. This time, the gas is on us. So is a beer."
>Inside is about $80 for them to split half and half.

>from out of nowhere, a car screeches to a halt right infront of the doors to the store and a disheveled older man runs into the store demanding to know the year.
>after you tell him he cheers and screams 'It worked! they told me you couldn't travel through time AND space but fuck them you can!
>all of a sudden he stops and turns pale
>you hear a noise
>a flopping sound, getting louder and louder as something nears
>'Oh god, they're coming! They're your problem now jackhole!'
>dude flips the fuck out, steals three random items from the store and hightails it back to his car. He drives away and when he's gone a certain distance you see a bright flash of lights and he's gone.
>flopping sound is now uncomfortably loud and frequent, you see what looks like a bus approach but it swiftly becomes apparent that not only is it not a bus, it isn't from earth
>you aren't entirely sure it's a vehicle, as it has lots of spinning tendrils but now wheels
>and it's breathing
>the top opens

You'd not paid much attention to the wall of full of commemorative photos when you'd first started working at the Station.

It stood to reason that if you couldn't muster the interest or energy to become the "Employee of the Month" yourself, you would care even less about past employees who'd received the lackluster accolade. Even besides that, you'd always thought the subheading on the commemorative sign reading "Gone But Not Forgotten" was a bit off-putting, and the fact that the display was centered on the fifth wall of the perfectly rectangular convenience store always made your brain hurt.

It comes as no surprise then that you didn't notice her until you were five months in and had grown somewhat accustomed to the weirdness the Night Shift brought along with it.

You had been lugging a couple cases of Slurm to the freezers one night, and noneuclidean panic aside, passing by that extra wall was a real timesaver when carrying something heavy. To keep yourself from thinking too hard about what it was you were doing, you'd glanced idly at the Wall of Honor and noticed something peculiar. In your five months at the Station, you had seen eleven employees quit, get fired or disappear. In the case of the Assistant Manager that had first trained you, the "disappeared" part had been right in front of your eyes and very, very literal. You'd just come to accept the high turnover rate as much a part of the job as the fruitbat infestations and the shadow people cowering behind the pumps.

No, what was strange was that you'd just noticed that between the years of 1984 and 1987, a single attendant had held the title of Employee of the Month for forty-one consecutive months. Setting the cases of cola down on the floor, you sat down on top of them to take a rest and get a closer look, mildly interested in discovering just who could be stupid enough or brave enough to work for so long for so little under such conditions. Her name was Sarah Miller.

She was a pale girl with dark hair and an awkward half-smile that couldn't have been older than eighteen or nineteen in her last commemorative photo, taken the August of '87. You guessed that she must have been a highschool student trying to make a little pocket money in her spare time, but were surprised to find that she had been promoted to Assistant Manager by her sixth photo, a position she apparently held all the way till herforty-first.

Up until the November of '85 she wore her hair in a long ponytail, but in the December photo of that year her hair looked nearly torn out and mangy, and she sported several small but wicked looking scars along her hair and jawlines. Though subsequent photos showed her scars mostly healed and her hair grown back out, she seemed to favor no-nonsense, safety-conscious bun-doos from then on. As the months and years passed by, you could see in each new photo the changes this girl underwent. She grew paler and more battle-hardened. The bags under her eyes got darker and her gaze more hawkish. In one sepia-toned photo she appeared to be wearing a saloon dress instead of her regular Station uniform, but regardless of her circumstances, in each photo that same awkward half-smile was present.

Studying that last August of '87 photo, you feel suddenly sad that you'll never find out what happened to Sarah Miller. Whether the Station's constant nightly assaults of the silly, sinister and supernatural hadn't quite managed to burn her out. Standing back up and hefting the cases of pop back up into your arms, you truck it all back out of the spatial anomaly and over to the freezers to complete the restocking

You find yourself thinking that maybe you will apply for an Assistant Manager's position. You think that maybe, you'll end up on that impossible wall someday. You think that maybe, some know-nothing broom lusher at the Station might see your picture and maybe they'll start thinking.

You reappear just as the sun had finally sunk below the horizon, stumbling into one of the lockers in the Break Room as you felt that familiar queasy, existential disorientation wash over you. Even after almost thirty years spent bound to the crappy old gas station that had gotten you killed, that awful tilt-a-whirl nausea you experience as you pop into and out of existence each night may just be the greatest indignity of an afterlife spent at the Stop 'n Gas. Hugging your stomach and letting our a long suffering groan, you look at Mel, the new girl, across the room as she stop buttoning up her uniform and stares through you at the locker door that just banged, seemingly by itself.

She has that unmistakable, wide-eyed, scared shitless expression that most newbies get when they really start to realize what they'd gotten themselves into, and you feel guilty for that little extra bit of mental distress your inadvertent poltergeist activities might have done to her. Lord knows the Stop 'n Gas stocks plenty of that without your help. You offer the girl a short but sincere "Sorry Mel" as you regain your faculties and straighten up but she is already out the door, not that she would have heard you anyway. You find yourself worrying how long Mel will last against the implacable hollow men or the giant vampire bats or even the verbal abuse of the mirror in the women's restroom if a rattling locker spooked her so badly on her first night.
>>
>>43218971
Thinking about mirrors as you find your legs again, you stumble over to the full-length mirror on the far wall where the new girl had been, squinting your eyes and tilting your head so that you could just make out your reflection, eerily indistinct and unsettling in the cracked glass. Yikes. Dark hair pulled back into an unkempt bun, pale skin marred by dozen little scars, dark circles under your eyes. You would like to blame your looks on the whole undead thing, but truth be told you didn't look much better when you were alive. Your uniform, pinstriped in Managerial Green and outdated even when you started, certainly didn't help in the looks department.

Wishing, not for the first time, that the afterlife afforded you a change of clothes, you spruce yourself up as best you're able to, pulling off your scrunchie and redoing your bun, straightening the fit of your uniform and attempting to slap a little color into your cheeks. Better at least try to look as friendly and presentable as you can, for those rare times the Attendants manage to spot you and those special customers actually able to see you regularly. Checking yourself over once more in the mirror as best you can, you reflect briefly on how utterly insane it was that you were still playing the role of "Miss Employee of the Month Assistant Manager" so long after the job had gotten you killed.
>>
>>43219023
The sound of tires squealing, car doors slamming and roughnecks shouting about "the infection!" out in front of the Station rouses you from your little reverie, and you hear the Attendants in the Store begin to panic as whoever pulled up begins beating on the doors. The others will definitely have their hands full tonight, which means that they'll probably forget about Mr. Grey and his required nightly candy bar again. You can and often do take care of Mr. Grey and his sweet tooth for them. He's one of the Stop 'n Gas' very special customers after all. "It's an afterlife, I guess." You say to no one in particular, shrugging your shoulders as make for the Store, silently wishing Mel the best of luck on her first Night Shift.
>>
Hey guys. I've been lurking the thread for a bit and I just thought I'd pop in and say that I fucking love this premise.
>>
Actually, does anyone have roll20 maps for this by any chance?
>>
>>43219643
It's got that same pulpy, schlocky appeal to it that a lot of the great old scifi-fantasy anthologies had.
>>
>>43219944
I think that one of the PDFs had a sample gas station map in it if that helps you. Just remember that when things start getting weird, the Station itself can get a little weird with them. Don't be afraid to add or remove whatever rooms and doors you want to.

I'll see if I can find any more maps.
>>
I really like this idea, can we also set this in different locations, like a mall or a store?
>>
>>43220126
Actually, it kind of makes me think of Regular Show.
>>
>>43220140
Because I wanna do a night shift with West Edmonton mall has the map.
>>
>>43220126
Mechanically, you could set the game anywhere you wanted. One idea from a previous thread was to take the same game and have it set in a crappy little stripmall somewhere in the suburbs. There are some reasons though why a sas station works so well in this setting:

>Gas stations can pop up in isolated locations far from civilization and rescue.

>Gas stations are familiar, making the use of surreal horror more impactful.

>Gas stations can also be dirty, grimy and unsettling, again upping the horror.

>Gas stations routinely hire people on the fringes of society, making for unique character possibilities.

>Gas stations can have convenience stores, repair garages and often diners attached, increasing mechanical and roleplaying opportunities.
>>
>>43220399
>>43220192
All that being said, adapt the premise and run the game you want to run!
>>
>>43220446
It's just with my job, I have to leave around at 4am to get to work and generally I go through the mall has a shortcut, I find it absolutely spooky that the lights are on, but no one is home.
>>
>>43220126
>>43220192
I guess? It would be a kind of different game though. I think part of what makes Night Shift really work is the gas station setting. It's small, isolated and outdated so you can really focus on the little weird bits about The Station get a lot of horror mileage out of the fact that you're in the only piece of civilization for miles in any direction. In something like a mall there are too many exits and the cops are just a phone call away.
>>
>>43220562
It's a setting that both more claustrophobic and personal in a way. You work long enough in a little old gas station or shop and you start to known and understand the place intimately. You discover its oddities and quirks, and you know when something has change or when something is wrong. As some Anon said before, as much as the Attendants may hate the Station with its dangers and its weirdness, it does almost become like home to them.
>>

>>
>>43222081

It will help to be familiar with an Apocalypse Engine game. AW is the base game, though its writing style (intended to get you into the right frame of mind to run a suitable Apocalypse) may be off-putting for some folks. See for yourself.
>>
>>
>>43208913

I know you've already been complimented on this but seriously great job, we're you picturing this as live action or animated?
>>
Would player characters have anything strange about them other than being the kind of people who work the night shift at a gas station? Or would they be relatively mundane?
>>
>>43224179
Well, maybe throughout all the shit that goes down, some of that weirdness rubs off of them.
Maybe Jim has weak telekinetic powers after that incident with the aliens
Maybe Sandy can astral project after she looted that pretty medallion off the mad Native American
Maybe Greg is now a therianthrope after some time-travelling shenanigans led to his grandfather to be cursed by some witch.
Maybe Alexis has a wicked cool cyborg arm after she was nearly turned into a robot
if you want to go that way, go ahead
>>
>>43224326

Which honestly just adds to the idea that they cannot leave this shitty job either, they're marked by it now
>>
>>43224179
There was some discussion in the early threads about the employees being more than mundane, and I suppose the answer would be that it depends on the group, the GM and the game that they wanted to play. Having the players all be more or less regular folk living on the fringes of society helps contribute to the atmosphere of horror and helplessness of working the Night Shift, though I could see someone playing as a ghost like Sarah or as one of the Station's nightly visitors.

I guess it all depends where on the silly-dire scale you want your game to fall.
>>
>>43224326

Then the Day Shift guys are all like "Nice LARP costume, dork!"

"No, it's a real cyborg arm! I got it in the Great Magnetic Field! Look!"

"Yeah, sure. You guys never quit with that stuff, huh?"
>>
>>43224449

>>43224513
>>43224415
>>43224326
When you put it this way, it does sound like it could be a lot of fun in a more-humor, less-horror take on the Night Shift setting.

And the idea of this Alexis getting worked up over how cool her new cyber-arm is makes me laugh.

I ran this before, problem is half the time the players just say "fuck this shit" and torch the building. Fighting zombies with molotov coctails is cool but it comes out of your pay check. You also really don't have an option to quit your job in the setting.

The problem is, either you make it weird enough to keep the action up and they in character have a reason to run off, or you don't and the game is boring.

Then again my players are also kinda shitty and dont understand consequences.
>>
>>43225716

I wouldn't have defense of the building ever come out of the players paychecks (the rest of your complaints have merit though). I would instead have it so that whatever character runs the books for the station notices the the fund for building maintenance seems to be almost grossly too large. Any and all materials used it the defense of the building get deducted from that fund instead and the fund itself is enough to rebuild the station almost 3 times over (just in case at one point the building does get destroyed).

Especially fun if the players blow it up and you just finish up the night and have them head home then keep the game completely normal. If they decide not to go back then they get a call from Management asking why they're late and if they do decide to head back they see the building back with very little evidence, if any, of the cataclysm that occurred.
>>
>>43225716
I see what you mean, in that you really have to walk this fine line where, at least for a while, the characters have to fear Management just as much or even more than whatever Threat they're facing that night. It might also be that Night Shift isn't a good fit with your players. It does require folks to play along with the premise to a degree.
>>
As we all know, a multiple choice past is the best kind. But what are some of the possible answers? Perhaps the Station was built on an indian burial ground. Maybe management is actually an eldritch god. It's possible that the gas station itself acts as a sort of liver for the natural world, drawing things that should not exist so that they can't poison the rest of the universe. What are some other possible explanations for the general weirdness of the setting?
>>
>>43225972

I recall one suggestion in a previous thread that the station is actually at a crossroads, it's just you can't usually see the other road with ordinary human eyes.
>>
>>43225972
my personal choice is that the Manager is actually some sort of god from another plane of existence, who, after winning a poker game with eldritch beings from other planes, won the deed to the Gas N' Go, which was meant to be the portal to Earth for whoever owned it. Since the "General Manager" is too busy dealing with his own plane of existence, he couldn't be assed to close the rift completely, so at night the Gas Station becomes it's own microverse, constantly going through other planes of existence, causing crazy shit to happen to those trapped in it.

The Gray Man is the Manager's only humanoid grandson whose temperament can alter the fate of the workers inside.

The Gas N' Go's employees are basically bound to the place when it's not anchored in their own plane of existence, preventing them from escaping to other realms. However, this doesn't mean that they're unaffected by other realms, just that they can't leave 'till sunrise
>>
>>43225972
Some say that weird stuff happens where ley lines cross. I had a cousin who lived out in the middle o' nowhere that always told these crazy stories about this old couple and their pink (what? Yeah, I said pink) dog! I'm thinkin' maybe this gas station is the same kinda place. Now, where'd you say you put the remote? I can't stand the eleven o'clock news.

If it dissappear into another dimension, I'll post a new one as soon as I notice. In the meantime, here's another lackluster idea.
>In an effort to go green and save some money, management has installed a small solar bank on the roof. Too bad it's not green in the sense you think.
-The walls now ooze green slime
-Everything has a strange green tint to it, almost like a night vision level in a video game.
-A hose runs from the solar bank down into one of the freezers. Inside is an automated machine producing a new protein shake "Now made with real soylent green!"
-Possible benefit of having a small reserve of power if the station loses its main source. Enough to keep the freezers and two small rows of emergency lights running. You can reroute the power for more lights, but then you might find out why Randy always leaves angry notes about the freezer staying below the freezing point

I'm reading through the old threads now, so far the paycheck system is based on how well you did that night. You can make each character receive the same pay, or specialized pay based on their actual hiring function. Things that go wrong during the night, like luring a monster away with the stations fountain soda, can be deducted from the pay of whoever had that idea. The basic goal is to have each character have a monetary goal that will allow them to quit their job. If you're just doing a one night game though, you can really just wing it. The money is also used to help the employees buy small but useful items, such as a box of ammo for that old revolver they found in the staff lounge. As for management points, I haven't gotten that far yet

For paychecks, I think it's more or less determined by the gm and players, but something I saw pop up more than once was more of a set price (i.e. $100) with the opportunity to gain more (bonuses determined by gm) or lose money (loss due to problems within the store, like not restocking the milk, or using twinkies to seal an extra dimensional wormhole) What they get paid is really determined by how expensive or inexpensive, realistic or easier to manage, you want to make it. Also if you have spare monopoly money, you can totally use that as a way to represent what they're being paid

Hiya, >>43198176 here, it turned out that it was just a shitty camera (A lot of the stuff at the McD's I work at is maintained beyond the point where it should be reasonably replaced because the guy who owns our particular store is a cheapskate.), that had a wire knocked loose by an errant pigeon. It made for a good plot hook in my opinion, even though I'm not particularly familiar with the rules.

Now, I've done the Night Shift these last two days (I've just returned home more or less alive fifteen minutes ago.), and I have some spoopy stuff to share that may or may not inspire some other anons:

Yesterday, around 9:15pm, a customer walked in the front door and out the back door in a loop like three times without ordering anything, and then left.

At around 11 our headsets we use to talk to people in the drive through started picking up voices and sounds of what sounded like people working in a Kitchen similar to ours (There was the beeping of various grills and fryers, etc). It wasn't our voices, as myself, the girl working the drive through, and our manager were the only people present, and I was the guy in the Kitchen, and there was nothing cooking. We never figured out what the hell it was.

Earlier this night I was working in the back arranging stock and cleaning what few dishes there are in our little Mcd's when I heard an odd cessation of noise. I walked through the store only to realize I was completely alone, which terrified the hell out of me. It turned out that the girl who was working drive through tonight locked her keys in her car, so she and the Manager went outside to jimmy the lock without telling me. This struck me as a cool hook for a game where one pc is stuck in another realm and has to try to contact his friends via weird happenstance.

Should I continue? There's other stuff I could mention, but I don't know if any of this is sticking.
>>
>>43231274
continue on MickyDee's Anon
>>
>>43231397
So, there are other weird occurrences that I could go into, but I've already shared the best. Instead, I would look at some of the weird employees I work with (Names altered to keep them anonymous, as always)

There's Mike, the maintenance guy. He's an old dude, probably in his seventies or so. He smokes a lot, and coughs like no tomorrow, but he knows all the little things that make the place function; like how you have to manually dump one of the fryers or it'll trip a fake hi pressure warning, or how to properly clean the massive 750 gallon drums of Coca-Cola we keep in the back to make sure they don't leak. He talks to everyone, and the more he talks the more little things you get to know about him: like that he was a Carnie out east, and that he worked for a higher-up in either the Mafia or the Mob.

Kris, a girl I work with occasionally. She's blonde, a senior in high school. She's on the chubby side, and has plain features, but a bubbly personality. She likes to sing in between taking orders for the dirve through, and makes the corniest jokes, but that's just the surface; she has a collection of HP lovecraft novels and a book about the lore and rumours surrounding the Necronomicon with her most of the time, and knows more about Cthulhu lore than a lot of CoC players I know.

Then there's Bob: the guy who taught me how to work the grills and make the sandwiches. He's a short guy, made strong over years of physical labour, very friendly attitude. He can run the whole grill and assembly line by himself at times, but there are times when he laughs to himself, like he can hear stuff you can't. His laugh is a really chilling thing; its not overly loud or sharp, but it carries over the noise, and is not something you want to hear in the dark.
>>
>>43231538
Then there's just strange ass equipment that does weird stuff. I mean, even the new stuff we get starts to develop quirks after a while. The Grills are the most tame, but were designed with plugs that fit into sockets that are parallel to the ground, so they're always falling out.

The Fryers are always acting up in strange ways. The vat on the center-left of the chicken fryer (We use different fryers for the chicken nuggets/ spicy chicken/ etc. than we do for the fries) starts filling up with extra oil it it isn't skimmed frequently enough. It just keeps filling from the resevoir underneath it until its overflowing down the sides of it, and will only stop when you either turn the thing off or replace the jib for the oil which the Maintenance guy says shouldn't be the cause of it.

The Coffee machine always overfills the pot, except when our GM is using it. Anybody else who uses it ends up getting hot coffee over the little counter its on, but not when the boss presses the button. Then its the right amount, every time.

The Toaster we use for our buns always lights the last English Muffin we put through it before we change over to the Lunch bun setting (We also have a second toaster for the all day breakfast muffins which always struck me as odd. It doesn't matter how many muffins we've put through it before we switch over, either, it just always lights the last muffin on fire.

And the demon-spawn that's the Oven. Dude, this thing has to be possessed because if you leave it on after baking something it starts sounding like a food processor, and heating up. I mean, continuously. One day we forgot to turn it off after making a batch of cookies and the fucker went like that for three hours. When we opened it it was glowing inside, and we had to replace the center rack because the heat had actually made it sag. It makes the best cookies and pies though.

It's great to get some real stories from an actual Night Shifter in the thread. I really like the idea of separating one of the Attendants from the others, leaving them alone for a time in an alternate version of the Station. Maybe they examine that malfunctioning mirror in the bathroom too closely and become trapped in an empty mirror universe. There's some good inspiration that can be gained from this. Thanks for sharing!

>>43231756
This strikes me as a good idea. If you didn't want to get into the nitty-gritty of what RPGs are and how or why they're played, you could always pose the question as "If you were making a horror series about weird things happening in a fast food restaurant or a gas station or something, what sort of things would you have happen?"

As a GM who wants to run the Night Shift, one of the most intimidating things about the setting for me is all the little details.

Like, the little (or not so little) quirks of the machines, the post it notes of the Day Shift (assholes), the characters. Those small details that really make the setting, but that I invariably trip over as I get caught up in the moment with my players. In some other games it isn't a big deal, but in The Night Shift I feel that is what makes up the core of the setting.
>>
I really want to see a session summary of this. I wanted to run night shift as my first time DMing and I need an example

Yours definitely not wrong. Within the Night Shift setting, the Station is almost a character in and of itself, a genus loci, if you will, which can be tricky for some GMs to handle. I would second Anon's recommendation in making lists of the quirks, oddities and mysteries you want to include in your game and strange them room by room so that you can keep track of everything your Attendants should be experiencing in any given location. Find a floorplan that you'd like your Station to have and use it as a reference along with your lists. The old threads are full of different bits of strangeness, often arranged in posts about specific rooms or locations. Also, it might help to think about every dirty gas station, dingy fast food joint and decrepit convenience store you've ever visited. What did those places feel like? What must it be like to work there? Try to capture the feeling and the atmosphere rather than the specifics.
>>

Notes left by the Day Shift would be mostly banal questions, comments or instructions, but would be passive aggressive to outright assholish in tone. Some notes may reference the messes and destruction left by the previous night's Shift.

>To whoever left a fiver on the break room table - THANKS!
>Night Shift Geniuses: Deliveries at 10:00! Remember this time!
>OMG STOP tracking RED SHIZ all over the bathroom! SERIOUSLY!!!

There might be other, more cryptic or esoteric notes and mementos left in the bulletin board by Management, Customers or former Night Shifters.

>Vaguely ominous notices from Management

>A Post card that has an image of another planet, with "Wish you were here" on the back

Maybe the weirder notes, flyers etc would only 'come out at night' - the Day Shift sees these differently from the Night Shift.
>Lost Shoggoth God flyers become Lost Shaggy Dog flyers
>CDC Zombie Brochure becomes CDC Cow Encephalitis Brochure
>gif of cute cat becomes jpg of cute cat with horrible artifacting

The one time we got someone who got both Day Shift and Night Shift duties, they tried posting stuff during the day and looking back at them in the night. Until they posted that blood donation drive pamphlet.

>Hexicans

>A huge family of Hexicans in the midst of their Day of the Dead celebrations stops in at the Gas 'n Go to resupply, turning the entire Station into a giant frenetic fiesta. The Attendants must continue to serve the other Customers and complete their nightly tasks while the Hexicans continue to party, shop and try to convince them to join them in the festivities. When the family of undead leave the Station at dawn, they will pay for all their food, drink and property damage with an equivalent value of Spanish gold, Aztec antiquities and heirlooms. If the Attendants joined in on the fun, this payment will be much greater.
>>
>>43232965
This could very well be part of what's going on. Part of it also is that the Day Shift are all dumb assholes who don't just don't "see" what's really going on.

>>43232861
Exactly this. The weirdness of this particular gas station runs very, very deep and permeates everything in it. Things that seem normal, boring or commonplace prove to be stranger and more mysterious when investigated further.

What's a good 'nowhere' location for a Station other than the middle of the desert? I like the idea of one that's in the middle of a Louisiana swamp. Maybe there are alligators living everywhere so it's a bad idea to leave the parking lot, and even that's not always 100% safe.
>>
>>43234057
Middle of the highway in a farm state, like kansas. The tall grass, or crops, can be used as an air of creepy for what's hiding in them

>Lonely Southwestern Desert
>Claustrophobic Louisiana Bayou / Florida Everglades
>Remote Rocky Mountains Pass
>Lonesome Midwestern Farmlands
>Frigid Northern Snowfields
>Primeval Southern Forest

I figure that any location that's significantly cut off from the rest of civilization will work.
>>
>>43234057

I feel like any isolated location would be a good spot for it. I live in the Pacific Northwest myself and one of the most disturbing experiences I ever had was running out of gas at about 2 in the morning and trying to find directions or help in the middle of nowhere.

My buddy and I ended up stopping off at a camping lodge that had it's porch light on and a few rusted trailers outside, went inside and the lights were burnt out, tried to call out and got no response back, saw a telephone on the desk with a sign that said after 11 call the manager. Picked up the phone and it just rang and rang.

At this point the forest outside was one of the most intimidating things I've seen, the pine trees seemed to close in and the needles ended up muffling all the noise so everything was coming out muted.

We got out of there as fast as we could and it turns out there was a small gas station just down the road run by a guy I can best describe as Santa Claus if he got sick of kids and took up being a lumberjack. Super nice and helpful and we were describing our situation and it turns out that nobody had actually been manning that lodge for a while, the light was probably on an automated timer in retrospect but that didn't really help us calm down at the time.
>>
>>43234181

I would imagine you could also have a lot of fun having the station skip around the isolated locations (the Grey Man always comes in at the right time though or maybe when you show up there always seems to be someone lost and right on the verge of running out of gas).

Also don't underestimate the city too, late at night in the Industrial District by the rail station can feel pretty isolated by itself.

Tall grass or crops, close-set trees, impenetrable swamps, deep snow drifts, twisty turny mountain passes, miles of empty desert darkness. Wherever lies outside the Station has to remain largely unknown and therefore frightening to the Attendants and their players. This helps keep the atmosphere appropriately tense and eerie as well discouraging the party from simply abandoning or destroying the Station because of the shelter it offers from the darkness outside.
>>
>>43234249
One option I was considering was a lone gas station surrounded by vacant buildings, operating out of a city neighborhood that was almost entirely abandoned.
>>
>>43234249
Maybe each morning, the town the players live in always seems to be in some different biome. Nobody except the players notice, and when they check the map, they're not in the same state they were at the start of the shift. It's the same town though, and the same regulars come into the gas station.
>>
>>43234322

It might be cool to have it set up there and every once in a while one of the customers that is high on something actually seeing the weird shit in the station themselves and having them freak out. The Attendants have to calm them down and get them out of the store without the customers pissing off any of the otherworldly beings.
>>
>>43234485

Another way to anchor them to the store, the Attendants don't trust these other towns they seem to appear in and keep with the station until they get back to their "original" town. Extra points for the players all thinking they're from the same town and at the end of the campaign arc they all go in to quit and get off the wild ride and one of them says they're wrong.
>>
Personally, I would have geographical shifts be the focus of one particular Night Shift session in a horror-heavy game, or happen occasionally in a slice-of-supernatural-life style game. Having the Station change location every night makes it a game about a traveling gas station specifically, rather than a gas station that suffers from paranormal phenomena like geographical shifts.
>>
Let's make somevery recurring characters a la The Grey Man.

>a manager that speaks in a thick southern accent and only seems to wear white suits. He always has a pompadour and gets really nervous if the PCs ask anything about him.
>>
>>43234661
Sorry, autocorrect fucked up that post a little.
>>
>>43234645

It would give the chance to explore the culture of the different biomes it skips to so yes some waiting at the locations would not be unreasonable. It gives more of a chance to get the feel for it.

>>43234661

If you're running a more supernatural-slice-of-life game having a Fox Mulder like character who has dedicated his life to tracking down the gas station would be fun. Especially if you throw in the geographical shifting where he is speeding down the road, leaning out of his window and screaming to cease and desist all activities and then you just pop out of existence.
>>
>>43234661
We'd had a few recurring characters / entities in the original threads:

>The Grey Man / Mr. Grey
An older gentleman with grey hair, dressed in a fine grey suit , driving an old grey luxury car. Polite but also distant and inscrutable. Comes in at the same time each night to buy a particular brand of candy bar with exact change. Bad things happen if he is disappointed.

>Sarah / the Assistant Manager's Ghost
A high school girl who worked and died at the Station back in the 1980s. Held the titles of Assistant Manager and Employee of the Month for years, rewriting the Employee Handbook into kind of supernatural survival guide. Still haunts the Station, continuing to help new Attendants.

>Stop 'n Gas 'n Go Management
The Station's Owners / management have and will never be seen by the Attendants. They communicate through memos, notices and the green phone, and while they are mysterious and sinister, they seem to care for the Attendants in their own strange and aloof fashion.

>AC Prime
A corporate investments and acquisitions company that seems oddly intent on trying to buy the Station despite repeated refusals to sell. Unlike the Management, AC Prime and its proxies appear wholesome and normal while actually caring nothing for the Attendants or others they may hurt.
>>
>>43234757
>>43235001

>Special Agent Wolf Daniels
An FBI agent constantly running around the country trying to address and close weird cases no other agent wants to have on their record. Has run into the Station a number of times but only became obsessed after supposedly seeing an alien vessel filling up at pump 4. Known to help when the Attendants get in too far over their heads but never seems to get anything to stick as far as a case goes.

(Wanted to give him a name at least and a bit of fluff)
>>
>>43235123
>>43235001
There were also Dave and Randy, current Assistant Managers of the Night and Day Shifts respectively. They're both assholes, but Dave is became an asshole to cope with his Station-induced PTSD while Randy's assholishness comes from him being a genuinely mean spirited prick.
>>
>>43235494

Day Shift Randy isn't really a prick. If I recall correctly, he's the only Night Shifter ever to get transferred to Day Shift.
He pretends to be an asshole like the rest of Day Shift to fit in, but sometimes leaves informative notes and helpful stuff around for the Night Shift guys, as he's a veteran and actually knows what's up. Some days he might want to think it was all a a hallucination, but he was on the Night Shift a long time, and it's hard to forget.
>>
>>43235621
Damn, I forgot we talked about that characterization. Nice catch.
>>
What happens when someone tries to rob this particular gas station?
>>
>>43236128

That's one of the more mundane threats that players may have to deal with.
With the nearest town being in a bad state regarding unemployment, driving out and hitting the Stop'n'Rob up for rent money is an attractive prospect for a lot of folks.
Sometimes things go badly if they decide to rob the place after dark, of course.

The music is loud enough for the neighbors to hear, everyone's doing that obnoxious "AII HAI HAI" laugh, the stench of food clogging the air, and the impossibly large amount of relatives invited. A Hexican fiesta would be like that but with more skeletons and cousins who married cousins.

My family's fiestas just went on and on. We had one each week in the summer. Doesn't help that the majority of the people my age are either assholes, literal faggots, or constantly trading chisme about how their cousins are either literal faggots or assholes

Oh yeah, and the pozole was always gone before I could get thirds

same with mine, that's why I always stick to the older people and/or closer to the kitchen "can't talk, eating" never fails.
Also, old people's stories CAN get interesting, like that one great family member that was a bandido or a soldier or both, the one that stole his bride or eloped, or when they talk about a nahual or some kind of goatman that roamed the land, because if it roams still I ain't walking out during the night.

>>43208913

I'm really feeling like we should shop this around to people, though. Scrubs meets american horror story, or somesuch, where the point isnt any overarching plot, but rather the day-to-day slice of life and adventures that the crew of the night shift are going through. Charcters might die horribly, and show up tomorrow like nothing happened, or fade away, and show up a year later not knowing any time has passed.

Itd be about perfect for 20 minute web episodes. Is there any content creator that anyone knows who might be down to have this pitch to them?
>>
>>43243230

The things that the show has going for it is that it truly captures the strange experience of working that job you might hate, because you have to, and feel like you can't leave it, feeling fundamentally isolated from the people who work normal day shift jobs, and doing your best just to get through the night or handle each problem as it comes.
>>

NSW Anon and TV Anon attempted to use their contacts in television to pitch the pilot script posted earlier in the thread, but from what I can remember, those contacts wanted to go the webisode route and wanted to cut the supernatural content and make it more of a standard work-com.

TV Anon !!N4jGcT6O5vY Mon 29 Sep 2014 12:31:31 No.35199486
Hey guys! Long time no see, eh?

Here's the current state of the Night Shift movie.

I had sent the script to a few people for review and pitch. One guy who I can't name seems really interested in directing it. He's got plenty of horror under his name, but again, I can't name him.

Other than that, things have been moving slowly. Still moving though. NSW Anon has been really busy with his life, and I've been suffering from problems which have been consuming much of my time.

The general consensus of the script is that it's great. So keep your hopes up. Someone is bound to pick it up eventually. Even if it's 20, 30, 40 years from now, I won't stop until you guys get to see the fruit of your labor.

Thanks for being awesome, /tg/.

Anon from waaaaaaay back from Night Shift thread number 1 here, the one who came up with the idea for the big rival conglomerate that's buying up all the small town gas stations. You know the one.

Yeah, from what I recall, Day Shift Randy is the only dayshifter that ISN'T an asshole. At least, not a massive one. His stint on the Day Shift has convinced him it was all a dream or a hallucination or the fact he used to eat out-of-date Funyuns or something, but he always leave cryptic notes, just in case all of that shit he saw... the stuff that still keeps him up at night, the reason why he never sleeps with lights off any more... just on the off chance, that MAYBE, it wasn't a dream.

Anyway, good to see the Night Shift back!

What about fairfolks? You know, the leader of the Wild Hunt, Puck, and these kind of fey? Do you think they could go buy something, or making some shit fall upon the store for shit and giggle? Or what if the leader of the Wild Hunt is the Manager? The reason why no one sees him is because he is actually leading said Hunt. I could imagine him on his horse, then suddently pull a portative telephone to anwser to his employee about an invasion of locust in his store.

or simply:
>The manager was a human being long ago. He made a pact with the Devil, and doublecrossed him. He is now something else, something with dark and mysterious power...
> The Devil is very angry against the Manager, so every night, he send something to the gas station, to make the life infernal to the Manager and his allies.

Night Shift works best when you take a page out of the books of Junji Ito, Lovecraft and the good Stephen King stories. In fact, Stephen King once wrote that “Nightmares exist outside of logic, and there’s little fun to be had in explanations; they’re antithetical to the poetry of fear.” In a horror story, the victim keeps asking "Why?" But there can be no explanation, and there shouldn’t be one. The unanswered mystery is what stays with us the longest, and it’s what we’ll remember in the end.
>>
I'm clocking out for the night! Have a good rest of the shift! See you all on the other side!
>>
>>43245317

Not giving the players an explanation is good, but you have to be careful not to pull an X-Files and paint yourself into a corner by making shit up as you go for too long. Knowing what the answer to at least a few things can help you keep everything consistent, even if the players (who are analogous to Stephen King's readers) aren't going to find out.
>>
>>43226170
Oh, you.
>>
>>43245868
Yeah, I can understand where you're coming from. However, the one thing that shouldn't EVER under any circumstances, not even for like a DM-only guide if Night Shift ever sees a print edition, be explained is what the fuck Management actually is and they can stop employees from dying with their groundhog day trickery.

I had a bit of an idea based on this location me and my family visited every time we traveled up California to meet my sister when she was in Davis.
>A gas station oasis in Lost Hills, California
>The Gas N' Go there is the only one affected the least by paranormal influences, yet is still left unchanged by whatever happened at night
>Event examples:
>A DeLorean stops at the motel, and a man in a jersey comes out
>>The Gas N' Go attendees don't pay any mind to it until gunshots begin to echo from the place
>>Nobody else hears the gunshots, cries of pain, or the explosion that takes out a chunk of the motel
>The gas station across the street catches on fire
>>Everyone inside, including attendees, don't notice their flesh melting off
>FastGas, the assholes next door, suddenly come running to the Gas N' Go
>>They're starting to see crazy shit you don't see
>An unmarked black van slowly moves across the oasis
>>All the buildings start to black out as it passes by. Once they're all out, the Gas N' Go's lights turn back on to reveal that the other stations are gone
Honestly, if we put our minds to it, the Night Shift setting is good for an number of locations.

A poor excuse for a Native American, he claims to be the last remaining member of his tribe and has pronounced himself chief because of it. He tries to trade Indian relics and knick-knacks for beer and cigarettes. Some very old pictures show that he is actually hundreds of years old. When very drunk he will admit he tricked coyote into hiding his death away from Raven. Regardless of truth, he knows how to contact the spirits of the land, or so he claims. His price for such dubious claims is a case of beer and a carton of cigarettes.

I can see what you mean, though up until this point I've sort of thought of the Grey Man as a passive force for good or ill at the Station rather than an active one. The night's craziness will yield to Mr. Grey's stoic power, loath to disturb him in his quest for candy, but will hit the Attendants even harder once he's left if they disappoint him.

The cat (and I seem to remember there being a crow at one point) was more of an active participant in events, like a company pet that everyone hated sometimes and thought was pretty cool others. How the Attendants treated it would dictate whether or not they earned a "cat-save" (or a "crow-gift") when they needed it later, or if the animal would purposefully and personally try to make their jobs harder.

I think as long as the station is isolated and out of the way, it could look however you want it to. It could be a 1950's relic, a 90's semi-modern look, or even like the one in that picture. The same customer shows up at the same time every single day. Their corpse is discovered in the bathroom one day, but the next day they show up like nothing happened. The next day, two corpses show up. The staff must find out how to get rid of this guy before they run out of places to hide the bodies, which the management says is "putting off the customers".

Just had a wacky idea for my 5e group, as a kind of joke Halloween event.
Also might be a fun reversal and intro into the Night Shift.

Have the party wake up outside the gas station, no magic, and wander in trying to figure out what the hell. Then drop them into the normal Night Shift weirdness and kil them off one by one, until maybe one or two are left, with some of the Night Shift regulars.

Maybe even allow them some "souvenirs" that they pick up during the night, and wake up with in the inn they stay at.
