Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony, but everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them. But when the world needed him most, he vanished. The world slowly smoldered as the Air Nomads were eradicated by the Fire Nation, leaving nothing but empty homes in their wake. The Fire Nation has already started a full-scale campaign on the Southern Water Tribe, beginning the cycle of death anew.

Fifty years this war has raged, scorching the forests and destroying lives. Many have died and all hope of the Avatar's return has been extinguished, but life goes on. The walls of Ba Sing Se, Omashu, and the Northern Water Tribe have held the Fire Nation at bay, seemingly nothing can penetrate them. As always, there is also solace in wandering.

But this isn't a story about the Avatar, or a king, or even a hero, this is the story of Kuo, a wandering Firebender.

Your eyes flutter for a moment as a ray of warmth creeps across your face, and then they scrunch up as you wince in pain. Your wrist is seething in agony as a man who looks like he hasn't worked a plow in his life taps it.

"Well, the good news is that it will heal within the month. The bad news is that he shouldn't move it until then. I know you were hoping to have him help in the fields until he gets better, but that doesn't seem to be possible with just one hand."

Wisho looks over at the man, he looks like he could be nobility or something, he bares no resemblance to the farmers around here. "He could at least keep a look out for any Fire Nation patrols, I mean, he looks like he could run pretty fast for help. What about that Mihe?"

"While I agree that he is in excellent physical shape, I wouldn't reccommend fast movement. He could probably help with harvesting or something though. I just have to get him in a cast."

"I can teach the kids some writing and reading. I shouldn't move my wrist anyway, and this frees up more people to work the fields." They are both startled when you start talking, but eventually the doctor, Mihe you suppose, begins nodding.

"That's a remarkably good idea for someone who's been in and out of consciousness for the better part of a month. I'll talk to a few people." Mihe exits the room with a few quiet steps. Wisho turns to you and begins bringing you up to speed on what the kids know and are learning. Apparently the Earth King has been improving the quality of education by holding meetings between the teachers and scholars from the University, and making a plan for their learning. The kids just got through basic weights and measures as well as the basics of math, and the next thing on the schedule is history. You can do that, history is just conveying the past through stories, and you're pretty mediocre at that.

The next two weeks go by in a blur, you go over some of the history and stories you have, like the first Earth Kings and the rebellion. Eventually one of them asks about the war and you go into Fire Nation history, so you get into it, explaining how the Fire Lord is a position that is younger than the title "Earth King" and the period when the Fire Sages ruled the nation. Then you get to the beginning of the war and bring out a visual aid, the Airbending scroll. You show it to them from the front of the classroom while going over the death of the Air Nomads passionately. By the end of the lecture, you went into Air Nomad beliefs, and why it is tragic that they were the first to go. At first, you don't think that the kids will get it, but after class you hear a few of them talking to their friends about what you taught, saying how Air Nomads were so cool, and you can't help but smile.

On your way back to the Buohu household, you hear the alarm bell ring.

You begin running to the alarm, but you forgot that it's almost on the other side of town. You feel the heat of a fire long before you can see it, and when you reach the alarm a line of people from the well to a rash of flaming buildings is passing buckets along. You hear a few screams inside buildings, but you know that the fires won't extinguish in time to save them.

You could expose yourself as a Firebender and put out the fires, that wouldn't be a problem even with your cast. The big downside to that is that they would probably kick you out of the village. Even if what you're doing is correct, the Earth Kingdom Army would probably have some strong words with you, maybe even stop you from going to Ba Sing Se.

If you do nothing the village will burn, there hasn't been rain for weeks.

You breathe in and out, preparing yourself for the leap of faith you're about to take. You lift up your hand and the flames begin to waver, then you slowly lower your hand while concentrating on the heat. The flames begin to sputter, but spreading your concentration this thin is definitely taxing on your energy. Your hand reaches the bottom of its arc and the fires are gone. You take your focus off of the house and the entire village is looking at you.

After a lengthy discussion among the village, they decide that they won't report you to the Army, but they want you to leave. The kids are sad to see you go, but they eventually say goodbye to you, some of the ones that saw you say that they want to go to University to learn about Air Nomads when they grow up. You ruffle their hair and wish them luck as you say goodbye to this town. Hime takes off the cast, apparently your cushy job was a good choice, but he warns against working it too much too soon.

The town waves you off as Shinji follows you north to Ba Sing Se.

Ba Sing Se is only a stone's throw away, and by that you mean it is just a day away. You reach the outer wall by the end of the day, the sun setting behind you. It's all very peaceful, until you hear a loud crash from outside the gate and a cry of "GET HIM!".

A person in a black suit rushes out of the guard station and jumps over a few people waiting to get in, throwing a cabbage from a cart at two guards. Surprisingly, it knocks one of them out. A more proffesional looking guard in the regalia of the Royal Guard steps out of the post and runs off after the figure. The person looks back and you see that they're wearing a bird mask. They pull two farming tools out of their suit and begin climbing the wall, stabbing them in one over the other.

"This criminal will not elude me once more!" The Royal Guard launches himself at the wall with a spike of earth and begins running up it, desperately catching up with the masked person. The people at the gate are practically rioting and you pull the map to the secret entrance out, it's right on the other side of the post.

You contemplate your choices as the merchant raves about losing a cabbage.

You walk up to the line and start waiting, and an announcement fills you with relief as the masked figure and the guard dissappear over the wall.

"All mercantile entrants please exit the line, a random contraband check is being issued as of right now. All single entrants will be checked at the front of the line." You walk the rest of the way, past all the merchants, to the front of the line.

"Name and occupation?"

"Dong Rock, Pai-Sho player, appreciator of good tea, hater of circus folk, and scholar."

"Dong Rock?"

"It's a family name."

"Okay, we're going to have to search your things."

"Okay." You have been thinking of ways to explain the contents of your bag.

"Why do you have a Wolf-raccoon in here? And these weapons? And this mask?"

"That's Dandelion, the weapons are antiques, and I don't question what you do in your spare time." He shudders a bit, as you expected him to, and waves you through.

It is the middle of the night and you don't have any currency that would work here.

There has to be somebody that would make your coin usable, like a shady blacksmith or something, but on the other hand...

You set up on the street corner and put on your best impression of a merchant. It was really hard to discreetly etch the symbol into them, but you put the Air Nomad crest on each of your coins. You aren't proud of this, but there has been a lot of demand for Air Nomad charms and beads around the Earth Kingdom lately.

"Air Nomad charms, straight from the Northern Air Temple! Guarenteed to put a spring in your step and blow good luck your way! Only one gold piece!" You barely sit there for 2 hours before you're sold out, people giving you various questions about how effective they are. You just kind of mumble your way through them.

You weren't expecting that to work so well, but you don't really want to complain. The people you sold to all looked like scandalous nobles and others with more than enough money to throw away.

After changing your money, you should probably go do what you came here to do. You walk to the Warm Earth Inn, asking for diections on the way. Eventually you make it and enter the inn, immediately you are hit by the odor of brewing tea. There are small tables with teapots next to rows of tables, all of which are etched with Pai-Sho boards. The teapots rest on small stands with flames underneath them and a small stand on each advertises the daily special. You wouldn't have expected there to be so many people here at this time of day, but there are droves of people young and old playing Pai-Sho.

You decide to signal the White Lotus in the way you first got their attention, so you sit across from an old man. It oddly seems to be the only table that is free. He greets you and cedes the first move to you. You place down the first tile to the symbol, and he follows suit. Eventually the outer pieces are placed and you place the White Lotus in the middle. The old man seems to be smiling as he puts away his pieces and you do the same, then he hands you a Fire Tile and you flip it over. Engraved on the bottom is a room number.

You walk to the room that has the same number in the inn, and the mail slit opens up.

"What is the scent of truth?"

"Jasmine." It's what the letter smelled of, why that stuck in your mind you aren't sure.

The slit closes and the door swings open. You are quickly pulled in and your eyes adjust to the dark room, the only light a luminous blue crystal on a table. There is only enough light to see a chair across from a hooded figure.

"Sit."

You do so, the room smelling of cinnamon and, oddly enough, raspberries. The chair is not made of wood, it appears to be made of stone, but it doesn't bother you too much. The figure sits down on what appeared to be empty space, but is now filled with a similar chair. A table rises out of the ground between you.

"You have been selected to join the Order of the White Lotus. This is not to be taken lightly, you must find a truth to join. Grand Lotus Wu suspects you may have found one already, but if not, please return when you find one."

"Knowledge must be paid for in knowledge." You are basically quoting that giant owl spirit you found, but truth need not be yours to be found. Okay, you got the one, you can stop sounding like a fortune cookie.

"Very good, to abide by that truth, I will give you one of mine. To be honest, when I was asked I just said that I'm an Earthbender. Not all truths are prolific Kuo, hence why we are in the dark. To take a stab in the dark. You get it?" The hooded figure is chuckling, then he pulls back the hood, revealing a middle-aged man missing many teeth and blind in one eye. He looks like he's practically insane, but you think you recognize him, but not by name.

"I am Master Bumi, King of Omashu. So sorry for what my subjects did to you Kuo. Between you and me, I don't think they're right in the head. I'm sorry, was I being ironic? I'm an Earthbender, iron isn't my strong suit." He's practically laughing out of his chair, now you remember who he is, the person who payed for the orphanage you were from.

"Wow, you're on fire with the jokes." He laughs and snorts like you just told the best joke he's heard in a while. "But aren't you supposed to be, you know, ruling Omashu."

"Eh, that place? It practically runs itself, besides, that's what advisors are for. I only pick the best, they had the guts to tell me to stop using the postal service for transportation, so I know they have the city's best interests in mind."

"Doesn't that make you more of a figurehead?"

He slams his foot on the ground and a pillar of stone with a perfectly carved bust of his face on it rockets out of the ground. "No, that's a figurehead ruler." He chuckles more.

"Grand Lotus Wu will see you now. He's a bit scathing, but don't worry, his wife will be there too. She took a break from her side job and she always cools him off. Feel free to see me any time, it was a blast." He opens up a door in the back of the room and the humidity skyrockets. Somebody must be making tea or something.

The room is almost empty save for two hooded figures and the equipment for making tea set out on a table.

>Calm Tornado used, add 20 to the roll.

You take out the tea you bought in the Fire Nation and smell it. It smells just as invigorating as before, and you begin steeping it. You think that you might have been a bit stingy on the leaves, but you soon have three cups of tea. You hand two of them to the hooded figures, set the last down, and sit at the table. You all take a sip at the same time and the tea tastes as good as the first time you tried it.

"I was saving this for a special occasion, I hope it meets your standards."

The figure on the right speaks in a low, rumbling voice. "Thank you Kuo, it's a pleasure to finally meet the man who stumbled past all our secret codes, managed to beat a Master with almost no experience, and just so happens to be able to dissapear in the Fire Nation and end up in the Earth Kingdom without a trace of how."

"I am a very lucky man."

The figure on the left speaks in a familiar voice. "Kuo, we both know that there's more to it than that." The figure draws back its hood, revealing a familiar face.

"Now the books make sense..." You whisper to yourself and the hooded figure on the right lifts his hood, revealing an old man with long gray hair. He has a single slash of scar tissue across his forehead.

"I know you met my wife, I was having her keep tabs on the Fire Nation, but you haven't met me. I'm Han Wu, the Grand Lotus of the Ba Sing Se White Lotus. Normally, you would've been contacted by the Ember Island White Lotus, but Utaaq insisted that I do so. She says you are very talented." He has a look like he's inspecting you and interrogating you at the same time. Then Utaaq breaks the silence.

"Oh come off it Han, I saw him kill a Sea Serpent, of course he's talented. You don't need to scrutinize him because he's a Firebender, he isn't like the last few. He's just upset because he made some mistakes when it comes to pupils."

"If by mistakes you mean mass murderers, then yes, yes I have. I'm not letting another Firebender into my Order without a test first." He hands you a sheet of paper with a list of tasks on it.

"Oh Han, he already passed the-"

"No. I am not taking the risk again."

"Pick one, then prove to me you have the discipline to join."

You decide on going on a pilgrimage to the Air Temples and start thinking on how to make the fastest trip. Your map is open and you sit there with string trying to find the shortest way, you try West to East to North, and every variation you can think of. Even if you were to take the shortest, it would take at least a year and a half, Shinji hops on to your map and rolls over. You scratch his belly and it reminds you of somebody else, which reminds you of something you did earlier.

You sit down in your room at the inn and watch the walls melt away and the air scorch, leaving you face to face with Vorlash.

"HELLO... KUO!"

"You finally got my name."

"... WHAT DO YOU REQUIRE?!"

"Could you help me with moving through the Spirit World?"

"YES! THANK YOU! I WISH FOR EVEN TEMPORARY FREEDOM WITH MY VERY BEING! I WILL ACCOMPANY YOU IN THE SPIRIT WORLD!" The ferret's tail wags and he jumps up and down playfully.

You make the journey and you feel glad you had your stuff and Shinji in your bag, as you feel that writhing feeling again and you appear in the Spirit World. Vorlash sits on your shoulder excitedly. You set off.

You spend the better part of a year in the Spirit World hopping from realm to realm, but the one constant that you see before you enter a Temple is a burning field of bodies. Even Vorlash is disgusted by them and explains that he is the essence of wildfires, not funeral pyres. You make your way through all three of the temples, spending time at towns outside each one, and pick up some more appropriate mountaintop clothing.

Each was different in its own way, one was even upside-down, but the similarities in each are the bodies. Most are decomposed by nature, but some that are inside are still decomposing. You move those ones outside so that they can rest in peace. The sheer amount of them sickens you, that people can do this is revolting, and you get why Han sent you on this task. This is the cost of misusing your power, and he wants you to know that.

Among the ruins you find a few trinkets tucked away, a recipe for a fruit pie, amulets and prayer beads in dressers, robes. But what catches your attention is a large wall with figures performing the moves in similar ways to your scrolls. You eventually manage to get one of your techniques down.

You look into the Burning Air technique you use and realize that the motion has a root in Airbending, on the wall is a rather simple diagram of the motion. It shows a bit more movement in the middle of the spin though, so you spend time refining that, eventually replicating the blast from when you fought the Serpent. The rainbow fire blasts out and you can feel the heat emanating from the flame, and you eventually manage to do it consistently.

>Dragonfire Learned
>Flaming Martyr Locked

After a long time in the Spirit World, you eventually form a bond with Vorlash, seeing things a bit more from his perspective. He eventually stops yelling after you explain that this wasn't exactly your choice, and he seems less obtrusive. Remarkably, you haven't run into many spirits you know of in the Spirit World, but you can't walk five steps without seeing an animal spirit. The journey eventually leads to you seeing parallels between the worlds and you fel a bit closer to the Spirits.

>Technique Possibility: Spirit Sense

After a year long pilgrimage, you eventually make it back to the Warm Earth Inn in Ba Sing Se. You knock on the same door from a year ago.

"The quest for truth."

The door swings open and you enter into the same dark room, this time populated simply by a sentry, and walk through. You open the next door and the humidity pours out as you enter. Standing across from you is Grand Lotus Wu, holding a scroll and reading, seemingly waiting for you.

"Hello Kuo, I have to discuss your... condition. Utaaq told me about it and I feel you require my training even more. My training doesn't focus on how you bend, it focuses on why you bend. I feel that your generally introspective demeanor is a good start, but I wanted to be sure. I wish I had something quick to offer you, but the Order is stretched thin right now." He seems to be pacing while looking over what appears to be a report.

"By what?"

"I have a mission for you Kuo, one that involves all your purpose, reason, and sense of justice."

"Okay..."

"The Dai Li Triad, a formerly minor criminal group in Ba Sing Se, has recently begun employing a dangerous group of assassins known as the Yokai. They seem to be focused on kidnapping nobles from the Inner Wall, and just recently they kidnapped the son of a very important noble, advisor to the King actually. We are worried about what this means, but we are even more worried about the Yokai."

He shows you an intel report with the sketches and profiles of each, all wearing a mask, but each donning a different one. One appears to be a Waterbender nicknamed "Noppera" who is known for being a master of disguise and stealth. His mask appears to be blank. Another is given the name "Hannya" and seems to be a Firebender who holds an astounding martial prowess. The mask over that entry is an angry horned man, reminiscent of some play you saw once. The most recent entry is an Earthbender in a terrifying brown mask known simply as "Ogumo", you double check your eyes because the entry says he seems to bend chains.
