This time it's you that swats the arrow away.

"Alright Laura. We talked about this, remember?" You ask.

Laura takes a step back and knocks another arrow.

At first glance nothing seems to be wrong, but a second proves it to be quite the opposite. Her face is slack, her eyes are glazed over, and her posture is slumped. She looks like the life's been drained out of her, and the things that used to move her have been replaced by puppet strings...

You look for objects that stand out. It doesn't take long. Upon her head is a plain crystal diadem that glows with an invisible light. It reminds you of the way an item enchanted with Silence looks...

Which means it's enchanted.

You give your sword a twirl and get set to sprint. Strapped to Laura in several places are her quivers, each one pulses with magic. Luckily you have some experience fighting Mage-Archers.

But that was Salem, a despicable man who you not only had no qualms with killing, but actively wanted to remove from the world. This is Laura. A girl who, despite her failings, has been a good friend.

It won't be easy, but you've got to take her down. Preferably without killing her.

The only question is: How?

You set your stance and get ready to take off. In one hand you have your sword, in the other you have 3 daggers, 1 metal, 1 Dark Fog, and 1 Night Shell.

Your arm tenses, which seems to be the queue Laura was waiting for. She looses another arrow, which you meet with a thrown dagger. As soon as the dagger's loose you bolt from your position, running low to the ground at full tilt to gain as much ground as you can.

Laura knocks and looses another arrow. You feel magic from this one.

"Blaze Twister" She says. The arrowhead glows bright orange, so you meet it with a Night Shell. The spell goes off inside the dark barrier where it will do no harm.

You duck down and roll underneath the black orb, which takes up most of the hallway. As you roll, something strikes you in the back, around your right shoulder.

You stand from your roll, and feel a sharp paincoming from where you were hit. Having lost your momentum, you stop. Keeping your eyes on Laura, you check the spot.

There's an arrow sticking out of your back...

"Again with this?" You ask. "Same damn spot too"

Laura says nothing. She takes a few cautious steps back, keeping her bow trained on you.

You give the last dagger in your hand a twirl, and flash Laura a smile.

"Dark Fog~" You say with a cheerful lilt, as the hallway is overtaken by black smoke.

You silently dart to the side as an arrow whistles past where your head was. It strikes off the Night Shell and clatters to the floor.

You move in a roundabout way to where Laura was, only to find that she isn't there anymore. You listen carefully, and you can hear her breathing. She's breathing ragged and heavy, like she's strained by something.

You move to where you hear her from, and make a grab for where you think the diadem is-

"Storm Winds" Laura says in a strange monotone. A burst of wind erupts from the arrow in her hand, blowing away your smokescreen.

She sees you and jumps back, putting the diadem out of reach -just- before you could get a hand on it...

Laura lands a few feet back, and looses another arrow. Then another, and another. She unleashes a flurry of the damn things, all in quick succession.

You duck and roll to the side, jarring the arrow in your shoulder and sending a jolt of pain through your back.

You deflect an arrow as you grab an enchanted dagger from your cloak. "Earth Craft!" You call out as you jam it into the stone wall.

The wall juts out, giving you cover from the incoming arrows. You actually had a lot of fun learning this spell, as Earth magic can't create earth, only manipulate it. So up until now, you had no idea if this would work...

You're glad it did.

There is only enough space for one person to walk around your new barricade. So you wait by the entrance.

And wait...

After a few seconds you peer around the edge, and find an arrow knocked and pulled just inches away from your eye.

You duck down, as the arrow takes your hat off and perhaps a bit of your scalp with it. Her surprise attack having failed, Laura turns and runs.

You manage to just barely grab her belt causing her to fall to the floor, and you to fall on top of her. Her bow skitters across the floor, and she tries to crawl to it.

So you grab her. In response she fights back with everything she has. She punches you, flails her legs, and tries to wriggle out.

It takes everything you have just to get control of her arms, and you don't dare let one of them go now.

But you need to get the damn diadem off...

You lean down and bite the damn thing, earning yourself a heabutt in the mouth. As you make contact, you feel strange. The magic of the diadem mixed with the headbutt you just got leaves you unfocused for a moment, and Laura takes advantage of it.

She gets her hands free and shoves you off, before standing and starting back into a run...

You get up onto your knees, still feeling foggy. You won't catch her at this rate, and certainly not in this state...

"Earthcraft" You say, putting another enchanted dagger into the ground.

The floor below Laura's forward footrises suddenly, knocking her backwards. She falls onto her back, and you approach.

By the time you reach her, she's on her feet. But it doesn't matter. You whip the diadem off of her head. It hits the wall and shatters into a million little pieces.

And Laura collapses into you like a puppet with its strings cut. You catch her, and keep her up... but she's dead weight, and you end up lowering her to the ground.

Laura's face remains slack, her eyes open and staring out into nothing. You try to shake her awake and get nothing...

"Well... fuck..." You say.

She's still breathing, and her heart is still beating. She's just... not there.

You can't exactly see if putting the diadem back on her will do anything, as it is now a fine dust on the ground. So you pick her up and carry her back to Marcy. Maybe she'll have some ideas...

"Not important" You say. "We need to fix this. Any ideas?"

You look down at Laura and frown. If you can't wake her, you'll have to find some way to get her out of here. But there must be something you haven't tried...

You try grabbing her side in the hopes that a panic response will do it. Nothing.

You pull a dagger out of your cloak and hold it off to the side. "Shock Bolt" You say, and the energy in the dagger discharges to a spot down the hallway. Then you release the last little bit on Laura. Nothing...

"Okay... I got nothing" You say., biting your thumb in frustration.

You could probably set Louis and Louise free, and let them carry Laura out through the secret passage... Well, once you've confirmed that it's actually them.

"Have you tried... y'know..." Marcy says.
"What?" You ask.
"You know..." She says again, making a kissy face at you.

"Really?" You ask.
"It's worth a try" She says.

You look back down at Laura. She's right. You can't give up until you've tried everything...

Laura looks up at you, still bleary eyed. "Giles..." She says with a lazy smile on her face. "Suuuch a good kisser..."

"Well... it worked" Marcy says.

You wave a hand in front of Laura's face, as her head lolls around. "Marcellus toooo..." She says.

You kiss her again, and she immediately gets right into it. Her free hand goes to your lower back, and she pushes her lips into yours.

After a few seconds she seems to get more energetic. Her free hand drifts lower, and she gives your butt a squeeze.

When she pulls away, her breathing is heavy. "Giles?" She asks. "Where am I?"
"You're in the Palace" You say.
"Why were you just..." She trails off.
"You were under some sort of spell" You say. "It was the only thing that worked"

She blinks several times.
"Are you alright now?" You ask.
"I'm... I'll be-... Oh gods! Giles, there's an arrow in your back!" She says.

"Yeah, you're good" You say. "Good to have you back"

You pull Laura up to her feet, and she starts taking inher surroundings. "Marcella, what are-... Louis, Louise... But you're... Why is there an arrow in your back?"

"You were captured. They put some sort of mind control crown on your head" You say.
Laura looks disturbed. "That... the arrow... that wasn't me... was it?" She asks.

"Well... it was" You say. "You weren't giving up the crown without a fight, so I had to give you one"

You pull the Water of Life out of your cloak and hand it back to Marcy. "A drop of this should do the trick"

Louis and Louise thank you for your help, and make their way off with Marcy.

Marcy stops a few steps away. "Oh... and be careful" She says. "I'm not leaving until you come back. So make sure you come back"

Marcy nods, and continues on her way back to the entrance.

"So... where do we start?" Laura asks.
"I don't know" You say. "We figured that we'd find her when we found you... but that wasn't the case"

You and Laura move silently out of the dungeons, still not coming across any guards.

"Any idea why that is?" You ask Laura. "I was expecting something, at least. It's like there's nobody down here at all. No one even came by to see what all the noise was when we were fighting"

"Our armies were at Catisse when I went under... if they're still there, then the guards down here could have been moved into the city" She says.
"Still... leave somebody in the damn dungeons at least" You say. "If you hadn't shown up, we could have walked right out of there with Louis and Louise"

"Maybe I was the one guarding the dungeons" She says.
"Well you're doing a terrible job" You say.
"They're getting what they paid for" She says.

You chuckle. "You might want to rethink that stance" You say. "Because they will be paying"

You're on the second floor of the Palace before you have to actually start sneaking. But even up here, the guard is slim.

The place Laura was talking about is on the 3rd floor, so you end up taking one of your roundabout routes up a secondary stairway. Your mental map of this place isn't quite fresh in your mind, but it's good enough to get you around.

"Selene?" Laura whispers once you reach your destination. "Come out, it's me"

Nothing.

"Where is this nook?" You ask.
"Up there" Laura says, pointing to a spot up on the wall. "It used to be a window, but the Palace was extended"

You see a littlebox shaped hole up above, just big enough for a little girl like Selene. Underneath it there are a few chairs and a mid sized potted tree.

You hop up on the chair and grasp the bottom of it, pulling your head up to see inside...

You get a quick look, before something hard slams into your forehead and knocks you down.

You fall flat on your back, and Laura gives you a hand getting back up.
"What was that?" She asks.
"If Selene's here..." You say, standing up and brushing yourself off. "Kuma. Come out"

Kuma's head pops out of the hole. "Master?" She asks.
"In the flesh" You say.

Kuma hops down, and kneels in front of you. "Deepest apologies for kicking you" She says.
"Don't worry about it" You say. "Where's Selene?"

"In there" She says. You notice that her eyes are locked on Laura...

"What's wrong?" You ask.
"We had a run in with Princess Laura earlier. She-"
"Tried to kill you..." You say, finishing her sentence.

"Yes" Kuma says. "The Princess is quite distressed"

Laura steps back, looking absolutely horrified. You don't blame her. But you can't stay in this hallway forever. The guard might be light, but it isn't non-existant...

Laura looks to be on the verge of tears, but she does what you say.

You hop back up to the little nook, and head inside this time. It's surprisingly roomy once you get past the entrance. Inside you find Selene curled up into a ball, sobbing quietly.

"Hey kiddo" You say.
"P-papa?" She asks. You can see her peeking at you in the faint light.
"In the flesh" You say, crawling over to her.

Selene uncurls and moves over to you as fast as she can, throwing herself at you and hugging you as hard as she can.

"You're alive!" She says. "I didn't wanna leave you at that cassle! I waited like you said, but Mama-"
"Shhhh... it's okay kiddo. It wasn't your fault" You say. "I actually ended up going for quite the ride, courtesy of Cassandra. Took me all this time just to get back"

Selene sobs.

"So what happened?" You ask.
"When mommy got caught, I wanted to come save her... so me 'n Kuma snuck in here, an' we found mommy... but she... she..." Selene can't seem to get the words out.

"I know... she did the same thing to me" You say. "Some bad men had control over her, but she's all better now"
"She is?" Selene asks.
"Yup" You say. "Your papa snapped her out of it, and she's waiting for you right now"

Selene looks scared. "She's all better now?" She asks.
"All better" You say. "And she's really sorry"

In the faint light, you can see Selene's 'determined' expression. "Okay" She says.

You look over at Laura, and she looks like she's being held back by a thread. You can see just how badly she wants to hug her daughter right now...

You put Selene down, and she looks at her mother apprehensively. "Mommy?" She asks.
Laura looks at you, and you nod.

In a flash, Laura's closed the distance and scooped Selene up in her arms. "I'm so sorry!" She cries, quietly.

The two princesses cry and hug each other in a moment that is nothing less than touching... but you take a step back. It's their moment, not yours...

Selene catches your eye, and gives you the sad face.

"You should go join them" Kuma says.

People were pursuing her as a waifu, which she seemed to reciprocate, considering that Giles has done so much for her and her daughter.

When faced with her old mentor, who was trying to take her back to the palace for, what we know now to be, a mind control marriage, Giles fought him, and would have finished him off, but got hit in the shoulder by an arrow.

Laura, on a snap instinct, hit Giles in the shoulder out of a lingering attachment to him.

We found out later that he's the rapefather of Selene. Salem took advantage of Laura when she was a young girl while he tutored her in magic and archery. She thought he loved her.

One of her guards found out about it, and kicked his ass out, with Laura not realizing how horrible the man was until Giles talked to her about what happened.

She eventually blew a hole through Salem's chest when they confronted him, again.

You look back at Selene and smile. Kuma's right.

You're already the closest thing that girl's had to a father, why not make it official?
You already know how much Laura loves you... and after everything she's been through, she's earned some companionship.

"Keep an eye out" You say.
"Yes, master" Kuma says.

You walk over to the Princesses and put one hand on Laura's back, and the other one on Selene's head. Laura shifts Selene to the side, making room for you. So you move in, hugging them both. You give Selene a kiss on the head, and Laura a kiss on the lips.

She seems surprised by that, but not bothered by it. She lifts her head and brushes her nose against yours, before kissing Selene on the forehead and leaning her head on your shoulder.

Selene looks happy, as she should be now that she has someone to call 'daddy'.

"Well if this isn't the sweetest thing I've seen in a long time" A familiar, feminine voice says. The sound of it sends a chill down your spine.

You turn your head to see Cassandra, with Roderick and a small regiment of the Palace guard. Kuma looks just as surprised as you are.

"Well it was, until you showed up" You say, turning your body and putting your hand on your sword.
"Are you about finished?" Roderick asks.

"Oh, of course" Cassandra says.
"Good" Roderick says, waving his guard forward. "Take them all to the dungeons"

You draw your sword and take up your stance. "Night's Edge" You say, and the blade enshrouds with darkness.
Behind you, you hear the sound of a bow being drawn, and ahead of you Kuma prepares for a fight as well.

There are about 12 guards, plus Cassandra and Roderick.

As the first guard approaches, you duck low and you charge.
