Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you wiped out the last of the void creatures and got accused of being a filthy degenerate.

It is currently the 19th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

The soldiers nearest you stare at you with a mix of horror, disgust, confusion, and disbelief. None move to attack you, for good reason. You're wearing armor and wielding weapons most of them could only dream of owning. You're about to try to put their fears to rest when a man's voice calls out from the back of the mass of soldiers, carrying over the muttering of the crowd.

His accent is distinctly rural, his words slurring together in a manner hard to make out. “Didja hear that? She say he's her lover?”

Another voice, this one powerful and booming, answers. “I think she did! What kinda filthy degenerate is this guy? Touching a human? Might as well fuck camels!”

You think you might hear someone mutter something about insulting camels, but you're too busy worrying about fighting off a lynch mob to really pay any attention. Fortunately, after a heated argument between himself and Mortia, your brother lends his voice to settling the crowd. “People, please! It was an honest mistake on her part, her grasp of our language is very limited. You know how humans are!”

A mistake on her part? Somehow you doubt that. Rather oblivious to what you're brother just said, Mortia quickly adds in “No lovers!” in her horribly garbled version of Samjan. You think some of the soldiers find it more endearing than off-putting. Like a child who's still learning to talk. Regardless the crow seems to calm down, many of them having a laugh at your and Mortia's expense.

A new voice cuts through the chorus of shouts and laughter, Darzi's voice. “I say let the degenerate be Matha! The man saved my life, I'd say he's qualified!”

Her declaration starts the crowd chanting 'Matha' with all the vigor of apprentices trying to goad their poor, unfortunate victim into some humiliating task or another. Much as you might be irate with your brother, being pampered for nine days really doesn't sound like that bad an experience. By the same token, you'd like to get back on the road in the near-future. Taking more than a week off to be pampered by attendants isn't exactly conductive to making progress.

>Decline the offer as politely as you can, but let Mortia do as she likes.
>Hey, if they want to lavish you in luxury who are you to complain? Go along with it, join Mortia at the front of the crowd.

Is there any precedent to refusing? If so leave it up to Morita. If not join her at the front.

It would be really rude if you weren't trying to be 'tacked on' as a sort of co-Matha. As is you could probably just turn the attention back on Mortia and be more or less left to your own devices.

It's highly irregular but not unheard of. Samjan make extensive use of human mercenaries to wage their proxy wars against one another. Hiring the mercenaries to raid or pillage a rival's lands. Your father employs quite a number of humans to train your family's guards.

If some of these mercenaries should distinguish themselves on the field of battle, it's clearly because the gods have allowed them to push past their human imperfections.

With an elaborate, and exaggerated, sigh you begin the march up to the front of the column, much to the apparent approval of the cheering crowd. You stop occasionally to tend to the wounded, but soon you're being dragged along. Someone lifts you up on their shoulders, and you're placed clumsily on top of someone's shield. Soon you're being carried above the crowd like some sort of sacred idol, before being roughly deposited in front of your brother.

You stumble from the crowd, your brother catching you by the shoulders. “Hope you didn't mind my having a little fun at your expense.” He sighs just quiet enough that the crowd can't hear. He claps you on the shoulder, propping you upright before taking you by the wrist and bending down to the do the same to Mortia, who seems quite embarrassed by this whole debacle. She refuses to even meet your eye. Your brother throws your and Mortia's arms into the air, though he's much more careful with Mortia than he is with you. After all, you're the same height as him. Mortia barely measures up to his chest. He could probably lift her up in the air if he wanted to.

Adopting a somber tone, he launches into some sort of formal declaration you've never heard before. Granted you were never much of a military man, but this seems like something of an obscure ritual no matter how you look at it. “I stand before you to declare that, as they have been chosen by the righteousness of Pani and the fury of Surya, Sheikh Mikhael of the Abdul-Hakim and the clanless human Mortia will be recognized as Matha.”

can we at least take some time to try and make some amends with Chryssa? She's still giving Mik a very cold shoulder.

He pauses, the crowd chanting your and Mortia's names repeatedly. There doesn't seem to be any organization regarding who says which name, so it just sort of becomes an unintelligible wall of noise. This goes on for maybe thirty seconds before they fall slowly quiet, and your brother resumes his speech. “Their triumph shall be held upon our return to Nazir! Until then, I encourage you all to see that your wounds are healed and to get as much rest as you're able. We begin marching at nightfall.”

That gives you a solid seven or so hours to kill. Maybe you could squeeze in a meditation session in the warped lands where the portal once resided, or go about healing a few more of the wounded. After all, starting with a force of more than six hundred men your brother's army has been reduced to a bare two hundred. He lost more than half of the men he mustered.

Your brother lets your and Mortia's arms drop to your sides and you quickly find yourselves surrounded by well-wishing soldiers as soon as Zaahir retreats towards his tent. You don't particularly chafe under the attention, despite the fact many of them seem to have started calling you 'Degenerate' as some sort of nickname. You really hope that doesn't stick.

Mortia on the other hand is completely overwhelmed. You think she's just sort of shut down amidst the crowd of men shouting in slurred and unintelligible Rhynian that she “did job good day”. She stares in wide-eyed confusion, struggling to mutter out anything in response.

(2/3)
>>
>>43241180
She'll get over it in a few months.
>>
You manage to extricate yourself from the crowd and grab Mortia by the wrist, tugging her along with you as you retreat towards the tents, much to the amusement of the soldiers. Their hoots and jeers follow you all the way to the various tents the healers have erected higher up the side of the dune. She relaxes once you're well away from the crowd, but you still get the impression her nerves are fried.

You put a comforting hand on her shoulder, switching with some minor difficulty back to Rhynian after so long spent speaking your native tongue. “Relax, Mortia. They admire you. Try to enjoy the adoration of the crowd, yeah?”

She nods, twisting her fingers into her long black hair. “I know, I'm just... not used to so much attention. I was raised in a fucking swamp my whole life in a house that most people couldn't even see, Mik. You think I ever had much by way of company?”

>Ask her to help you tend to the wounded, that ought to get her mind off things.
>Suggest she get some rest while you head out to meditate with some of the other Vatis.

I highly doubt that. She seems to be the type that carries long grudges. mik friend zoned her when she was showing subtle interest in mik, and then when and had casual sex behind her back while she was still under the impression that Mik will marry her in the near future. And that affair was just after we went off to go and kill her husband. Even though we've managed to talk her down into letting go of her immediate urge to kill us in the fallout of that affair, it still left a VERY bad taste in her mouth.

Insanity meter is what causes this for her. Lower insanity, and she doesn't hold grudges as hard anymore. Which is why we gave her the Sanity Ring.

She literally agreed before the incident even happened that it was best for the both of them if they didn't pursue a relationship.

Actually, yeah. Go ahead and roll to see how many you bring back.

3d10+18 vs DC... let's do tiered DCs. 30 to bring back even those moments away from death, their souls already halfway out of their body. 25 to bring back the severely wounded, those who have lost limbs and are barely breathing. The DC to bring back those with moderate to severe wounds who are still conscious would be 20, which is too low for you to fail even if you roll a Nat 3.

You let your vys seep from your pores, slowly filling your surroundings while you speak with Mortia. “If the attention of others truly makes you so uncomfortable, I recommend you prepare yourself. You're going to be the center of attention for the next nine days.”

She scrunches up her face, staring off further and further in front of you. You're not really sure what she's looking at until she reaches out and pokes you in the gut. “Why are you spreading your vys out like that? Are you casting a spell? Just get on with it already, throwing it away like that is wasteful.”

You focus your will, encouraging your vys to fill more and more of the healer's camp. When finally you sense that the entire camp is covered you reconnect the lost vys to your reserves and start channeling it into the bodies of the wounded. All at once the unconscious spring back to life, cuts knit themselves closed, bones mend, and limbs begin to regrow. In one grand instance you've healed forty or more soldiers to perfect health.

“That's why I was 'wasting' my vys. I'm combining two techniques, one to cast a spell remotely and the other to cast a spell over a wide area.” You explain, unable to resist grinning like a cocky bastard. “Really, Mortia. You should consider brushing up on your metamagic and effects. You might be a skilled Vatis, but without supplementary effects and metamagic you're really limiting yourself.”

She moodily folds her arms underneath her chest. “I've told you before, I'm not a Vatis. I'm a Venefica. I'm not even supposed to fight, I'm supposed to sit nice and comfortable in my lab and breathe in toxic fumes until I'm dizzy.” After a moment's hesitation, she continues. “Though I admit, it would be useful to expand my knowledge of magic beyond the basic elements. I simply lack the means to teach myself.”
(1/5)
>>
Mortia adopts a wry tone, twisting her limps into a sardonic smile. “Now if only I knew someone who carried around a veritable library in their cloak, maybe I could correct that failing.”

You pull open your cloak and gesture towards the black plane which separates your world from the void with an elaborate flourish. “By all means, what's mine is yours. All you've got to do is ask.”

She looks a little surprised by your offer. “Wait, really? Because I'd love to look through your stock of books sometime. Not right now, but just in the near future.”

Did she really think you were hoarding the contents of your cloak exclusively for your own, personal use? “That would be fine. Just come find me if you're interested, I've finished reading most of the books I have anyway so I have little use for them.”

You're distracted from your conversation by two soldiers carrying an unconscious man between them, the stump of his forearm leaking blood into the sands. You channel vys and watch as first his bones slowly reform, followed by ligaments and nerve tissue, and finally muscle, fat, and skin. He's lost a lot of blood, but he'll be fine. You could easily restore him to consciousness if you weren't trying to conserve your vys for other task.

Turning, you survey the battlefield. Vultures have already started to descend upon the battlefield, picking at the flesh of the dead and dying with equal vigor. Hundreds of bodies lie scattered across the battlefield, cries for mothers and wives carrying even to your position high up on the side of the dune. “Why don't you stay here and help the healers, I'm sure they'd find your concoctions immensely valuable.” You say, resting a hand on Mortia's shoulder. “I'm going to see if I can't bring back some of those closer to Pani's embrace.”
(2/5)
>>
Your companion simply nods, her previous levity forgotten, and starts pulling vials and herbs out of the various pouches and bags strapped to her person. Meanwhile you wander forward, into blood-slicked sands of the battlefield. In places the rocky soil has actually been churned into mud, so soaked is the land here. Hundreds died, in such a gruesome fashion, so rapidly. You should hardly be surprised.
>Vys Pool: (17/59)

You heal as many as you can using the remnants of your current reserves, but there are a lot of men very severely wounded and clinging to life by little more than a thread. At this point the only people still alive out here are those so severely wounded that the healers left them to die, unable to waste resources fighting a hopeless battle. You labor until you're exhausted and on the cusp of collapsing yourself before finally allowing yourself a break, your vision swimming and your head pounding.
>Vys Pool: (1/59)

Yet the desperate cries of the dying urge you forward. Recalling the ring you received from Mahana, you draw deep and greedy from its built up reserve, surprised by how large it's grown over the last several days. In no time at all you've filled your reserves completely and the ring still has some to spare afterwards. You wonder if it collected the vys you bled off during your soul-stripping meditation?
>Vys Pool: (59/59)
(3/5)
>>
Finding your second wind, you throw yourself completely into the task of healing the wounded. Wherever you walk across the battlefield limbs sprout from shattered torsos, bring back to life men which anyone else would've thought long dead. You force the hearts of the recently deceased to beat again, dragging them away from Pani's open arms or Surya's firey maw with equal prejudice.

It's as you're healing a young man, no older than fourteen and missing nearly the entirety of his right side, that your luck finally runs out. You've just finished restoring his limbs and begun work on rebuilding his lung that he slips away from you, your vys simply rolling off the soulless corpse. You simply sigh, preparing to move on to the next when an idea occurs to you.
>Vys Pool: (44/59)

Sitting down on the blood-soaked ground you force yourself into a trance. It's surprisingly simple, exhausted as you are. As you slip deeper and deeper into the black, a thousand, thousand points of light fill your surroundings like the constellations of the night sky. The souls of your army, the souls of the recently departed, the and the souls of the men and women beyond the scope of the horizon all manifesting as gleaming golden orbs.

It's the souls of the recently departed which interest you most. They float daintily through the air, stripped of their outer shell so that only the divine core remains. You note that each and every one of the shards of divinity has been stripped of the black stone shell which usually surrounds it, leaving only the blinding light within. Some of the shards seem to just... wink out, vanishing without any sort of warning, but most are drifting slowly towards the twisted lands where the portal used to lie.

(4/5)
>>
Those that reach the edge of the twisted lands vanish instantly. Perhaps... they're slipping between the threads of reality? That would make the most sense to you. Does everyone experience this when they die? Why have you never seen it before when you meditated in the presence of the recently departed, like when you were torturing that bandit in the name of experimentation?

Regardless, you focus yourself. The soul nearest the corpse of the boy you'd been healing is probably his, that seems a reasonably assumption, so you focus all of your efforts on grabbing it and dragging it back. It's a difficult task, incredibly so, but slowly you manage to wrangle the gleaming shard of divinity back into where you think the boy's corpse is supposed to be. You can only perceive it as a sort of vague outline in the black, but you're relatively confident in your placement.

However, much to your disappointment the moment you release your hold the soul simply starts drifting off towards that warped area in the desert left behind by the opening to the void. On a hunch you drag it back and hold it still, channeling Metal magic into the shard and into the boy's corpse as well. That worked for you, at least. Reinforcing your soul with Metal magic. Sure enough, some sort of inky black substance slowly starts to bleed from what appears to be the fabric of reality itself, weaving itself into a shell around the boy's soul.
(5/6)
>>
There's a powerful pulse of magic as the shell finishes forming around the divine shard, and you're forcefully woken from your trance as a result. You're quick to restart the boy's heart and finish mending what damage remains to his body. You think he's alive, his heart continues beating even after you cut the flow of vys and he appears very faintly green through the filter of Nature magic, but he's still unconscious and probably won't wake up any time soon.
>Vys Pool: (34/59)

You stand, your legs feeling unusually weak. If you've really accomplished what you think you've accomplished, you think this might be the first time in history the truly dead have been brought back to life. There have been claims of such in the past, and you know that liches return from the dead, but you have a vague sense that this isn't quite the same as a lich. You haven't crafted him some new body or anything of that sort, nor trapped his soul in some sort of phylactery. You've dragged his soul away from the void, shoved it back into his body, and sealed it inside with Metal magic.

You scan the battlefield for more wounded, but at this point most of those you could've saved have already perished. Just for the sake of being thorough you walk all the way to one end of the field of corpses, healing a few more of the less injured men who the healers haven't yet reached, then return to the young man you revived.

Hoisting the boy over one shoulder you carry him back to camp. Teams of soldiers have started to collect the corpses of the dead to be gathered up and burned en masse, while the bulk of the surviving force, now numbering more than three hundred thanks in large part to your efforts, seem to have migrated to the other side of the dune to celebrate well away from the smell of death.

Mortia, Darzi, Zahak, and Profectus are nowhere to be found. However, Fulvia and Chryssa are playing some sort of game with stones in front of their shared tent. You've still got around three or so hours until sunset, so you drag the boy over to the healer's camp and set him down in the sands, collapsing next to the unconscious youth to relax and keep an eye on him. After all, you don't want him turning into some sort of horrible abomination tainted by the void.
(1/3)
>>
You watch the corpse crews gathering up the dead while listening to the sounds of revelry from the other side of the dune. They strip the dead of whatever usable gear they're still wearing and then drag their corpses over to a vast pile being built a little bit forward of the former front lines. Theirs is no easy task, but after two hours they've got most of the bodies stacked up and most of the gear collected neatly. A few Water Vatis are serving to wash blood and other bodily fluids off the reclaimed armor, while priest walk around the corpse pile in a broad circle reciting prayers and occasionally sprinkling the dead with water.

When it's all said and done a team of Fire vatis step forward and send tongues of flame licking out across the gathered dead. The fire soon catches on the clothes they were left, and soon the entire pile has gone up in flame. It's a massive bonfire spewing foul black smoke skyward. A ritual to send the spirits of the dead into Pani's embrace.

Curious to realize now how useless the ritual is. In the past it would've brought you comfort, but now you know the true fate of a man's soul when he dies. Consigned to vanish into the void, that endless realm of monsters. You wonder what happens there. Does Pani truly send them back into the world, to be born again, or are they preyed upon by the natives and consumed for the power they may bring?

Somehow you doubt that. It would seem as though any shard of the divine which had previously been apart of someone's soul would be permanently tainted by the mortal realm, and thus despised by most creatures of the void. However, you simply don't know for sure one way or the other.
(2/3)
>>
The boy has yet to awake when you hear the cries of protest and annoyance that mark the end of the festivities, a messenger from your brother swinging through the healer's tent to tell everyone you're about to march. Mortia appears from one of the tents, fingers stained blue by some unknown substance and eyes surrounded by black rings. You're not sure if it's paint or the result of some sort of potion she ingested. She doesn't seem particularly concerned by them either way, nor does she seem uncomfortable.

Zahak's voice filters through your thoughts tinged with worry. {Papa, people are shouting about going back to the city. I think someone mentioned trying to attach a cart to my back. I don't want to pull a cart.}

>Tell him to join you in the healer's camp. You'll strap the boy to a cart and trust that he'll make it back to the city while you fly ahead on Zahak's back.
>Just tell him to meet you back at the city. You're not letting this kid out of your sight for even a second.

You mean alcohol right
>>
>>43245160
can we contact Mahana about the effects the shrines have on the surroundings while back in the city?
>>
Oh, and just to clarify something.
It's perfectly reasonable to think that building the shrine might destabilize the area. It's so saturated with vys and the veil between reality and the void is so thin a wet fart on the wind might destabilize that area.

By the same token, building a shrine has never destabilized anything in the past, nor seems to have done anything to weaken the veil. Indeed, spirits hate the void. Their shrines might well strengthen the barrier.

Point is, Mik simply doesn't know. He hasn't ever experimented or even investigated the shrines in any depth.
>>
>>43245200
So, something we should talk to Manha about
>>
>>43245200
Yeah, we ain't doing anything that could even possibly destabilize that shit. The void fucking opens again we wouldn't be able to stop it another time.

>>43245214

>>
>>43245200
Tacking on to this real quick.

Mik would also know that Mahana specified building his shrines in areas where the veil is weak, because that's where vys is concentrated. Whether his shrines contribute or detract from the weakness, and whether or not Mahana has any control over this, is also a mystery.

Okay, now I'm gone for real. Back soon.
>>
>>43245200

So why not just build it a 30 minute walk from the destabilized area

Mask and crown fag here.

The fact that I was the one voting to take the responsible action and not risk upsetting the veil really says something about the catfags.
>>
>>43245316
>mfw I voted no shrine

We can always check with the cat and fly back later to drop one off. We can even try to Jew him extra hard if it's the perfect spot. And make Mr dead MacGreen soul stay behind to maintain it / be watched over. Cat gets worshippers, we get a monument to the battle, and any extra Jewery on top of our reward for the shrine.

Or did you NOT want to get better at enchanting?
>>
>>43245380
there's no point in getting any better since we never use it
>>
So when is Mik going to brag his ass off about how he spat in Pani's eye and dragged this kid's soul back into his body?
>>
>>43245380
>Or did you NOT want to get better at enchanting?
Because we use enchanting all the time, right? We're totally going to use those runes, right?

Stop pretending you care about enchanting. You only want more runes for the sake of having more. The same is true of all catfags.
>>
>>43245394
Once we actually get to the point where we cant enchant stuff better than our gear then you can talk.

Until then we just gotta keep sinking some time into it. Not abandoning it.
>>
>>43245394
The biggest problem is that we're limit in what we can do with enchanting I mean have you seen the crazy magic gear that we have?

Our enchanting is still shit compared to what it could be, and honestly runes are just part of it as the whole Soul thing is something we're still investigating.

But weak places in the veil are exactly where the Cat asked us to put the shrines. And like I said, we can always talk to him about it. Mention that fucking void creatures were all over the place. Hell, he might not even want us to pUT a shrine there.

But still. It could stabilize the area for all we know and we would get enchanting boosted in return. It could be a big win.

Thirty minutes away from here isn't really anything special. In any direction you go, it's pretty much normal once you get a mile or so away from the portal. Building a shrine there would convey no special bonus or benefits, even if it would still serve as a travel waypoint.

Anyway, seems y'all have had some time to discuss and I've got plenty of things to write outside of building the shrine. So Final Destination while I write other things.

To be fair, weakening the barrier between worlds is completely within the cat's self interest. If void creatures bust into reality and start fuckin' around then spirits are going to have a really bad time. A really, really bad time. No, spirits generally want to keep the veil weak enough that everything is saturated with magic, but strong enough that nothing breaks. Young spirits tend to fuck this up, but older spirits like Mahana can achieve a nice balance.

Pretty much everything Mahana does is acting in his own self interest, and it just so happens that his self interest frequently aligns with yours.

You blow out a sigh, pushing yourself to your feet. {Just stick close to the column, circle above until we start moving and then fly along above. Keep an eye out for anything dangerous approaching and report it back to me. I'm going to be meditating briefly, but I'll catch up.}

Zahak's response radiates pride, though you're not entirely sure why. {I can do that, Papa! I'll make sure nothing gets too close that might hurt anyone!}

You hear a chorus of shouts and a rush of air as Zahak takes to the sky, rising above the dunes in short order and slipping into an easy circling pattern once he attains the proper altitude. You approach Mortia, snapping your fingers to get her attention. Once she turns around, you gesture to the area around your own eyes. “What's with this? Why are you all discolored?”

Her cheeks darken, turning from horribly pale to a strange shade of blue. Come to think of it, all of her exposed skin has a slight blue tinge now that you're closer. It's just that on her hands it's worse, and the rest of her is covered. When she speaks, her voice is thick and her words slurred. “I hadta...” She waves a hand searchingly through the space in front of her head. “Blood. I hadta get blood, from myself. Because it's poison. Yeah? Really poisonous. Refined it down, got the... the leftovers. Think I mighta accidentally touched some.”

She pitches suddenly forward, but catches herself on wobbling legs. “It worked. Guy's fine. I'll be fine. Used to this.” What guy? You peak towards the tent, where a man is stepping past the flap. He's missing his right arm and his left eye, and his veins are bulging wildly from the surface of his skin like vines crawling across his head and neck, but he seems otherwise fine.
(1/3)
>>
Seriously, what the hell? She has some sort of potentially deadly poison in her blood, at all times? “So, what did the poison do exactly? Why are you like this, why is he like that?”

She sighs, scratching weakly at her neck. “It's... he was bleedin', right? So I jus'... mixed the powder with some clay, water, and some other junk and slapped that shit on his arm. Poison'll stop the bleeding cuz it was just a small doze, but it'll suck the oxy..ox-” She mouths the word soundlessly a few times, trying to get a feel for it, but ultimately gives up. “Drains the air outta his blood. Stops bleeding. That's the important part. Heart beats faster too. Not like that for me cuz I'm used to it, just get all... dizzy and confused.”

She sounds drunk, is what she sounds like. You motion to one of the near-by soldiers folding up a tent and he leaps to his feet, jogging over to stand in front of you without a word. You quickly give him orders to take Mortia and the boy you revived to a cart or a carriage and make sure they're well taken care of. Then you march off towards the distant patch of twisted earth where the portal used to be.

Vys still clings to the area visibly, as a fog rolling across the ground. Just being here makes you feel like your chest is on fire. Not in an unpleasant way, either. Your heart races, your skin feels flush, you're hot. Yet you wouldn't call yourself aroused. No, it's a little more complicated than that. It's just this sense that here, right here, you could do anything. You could rip the world apart and rebuild it in your own image. It gives you a sense of strength you've never quite had before.

You sit down in the center of the warped and twisted land, right were the portal used to be, and begin channeling your vys. Rather than a sense that you're emptying yourself, as you'd normally get trying to cast a spell, opening yourself up in this environment practically forces the ambient vys into your reserves. Casting a spell gains you vys.
>Vys Pool: (45/59)

You soon find yourself losing control, but it's a familiar sensation. Mahana realizes what you're trying to do and takes over to help you accomplish it. Before your very eyes the ambient vys begins to crystallize, forming a small ring of solidified vys in the ground just in front of a pillar of stone, slightly more normal than the rest of its surroundings. Soon the vys starts to fly into the stone, carving on its surface using the same solidified vys a vaguely runic design, though if it is a rune you don't know what it means.

That's it. It's an exceptionally simple shrine. Far more simple than Mahana's usual creations. Nothing immediately seems to happen, though you do notice that some of the fog near the shrine has started to dissipate or get absorbed into the crystallized vys. Right on cue you feel as though a hammer cracks open your skull, the knowledge of eight new runes forcing itself into your head.
>Learned: Mind, Soul, Invert, Revert, Conceal, Reveal, Slow, Fast
>I'll add these to the runic library post session.

Rising to your feet you quickly take your leave. You actually manage to make it to the column of gathering soldiers before they set off to march, and crawl into the cart alongside Mortia and the boy you saved. Darzi joins you shortly after, with Chrys and a mildly drunk Profectus at her side. The only one missing is Fulvia, whom Chrys quickly explains stayed behind to discuss something with your brother.

(3/4)
>>
Nobody ask you about the boy, they probably just think he got shoved in here with you by chance. You debate whether to tell them about your feat of magical talent as the cart starts to roll, but ultimately decide against it. There will be time later and there are far too many people around who might overhear. If word gets out that you can bring the dead back to life, everyone and their mother will be begging you to bring back long dead relatives. Something you're not capable of.

Regardless, you've got about seven hours to kill. You think the boy should wake up in around five hours, meaning he'll almost certainly wake up before you reach Nazir. That could be a problem.

>Maybe you should strap the kid down or something. Your companions will probably think that's weird though. You should probably just explain what happened to them.

Set up a vys leech enchantment that will fill up a pool of vys slowly when in the presence of minds+souls, then set it so that once the pool is filled up it triggers the large+fire+conceal and also link it up to slow+minds and link that to a large area of effect.

If you want to be even more maximum asshole, link that all up to another conditional trigger so that it only goes off once you have a suitable number of minds+souls within range.

And repel water, attract air.

>You turn the page again, and this time it depicts a figure standing. A creature of shadow charges from behind him, and his arm forms into a long silver blade. With a sweep of its arm, the shadow is cut down. More come at him, and over the course of several minutes it dances across thin air, slicing this way and that with metallic blades formed, as far as you can tell, from its very flesh. When it comes to stand once more at its origin point, it sits down and the blades vanish.

This is what was "said" in the metal codex. Notice how it doesn't say anything about voids being weak against silver. It just says (it was actually a picture) "the figure turned his arms into a long silver [colored] blade".

Some anon took that and said "I wonder if that means voids are weak against silver, like traditional fantasy monsters?", and since then anons have been stating this as fact.

Rune, not time

You stare at the boy's unconscious body for a time before reaching into your cloak and extracting your trusty length of rope. You're glad you had the forethought to buy rope, all those months ago. Rising up on your knees you drag the kid's arms behind his back, quickly tying his hands together and then tying his ankles to his hands. He ends up laying on his back with his legs and arms in the air, tied firmly together.

Your companions watch all this with a sort of detached interest. Only after you finish tying does Darzi finally ask the obvious question. “Mik, why are you tying that kid up? Probably bad for his wounds.”

You shrug your shoulders, falling back onto your ass and scooting up so your back is pressed against the side of the cart. “Well, it's a precaution more than anything else. You see-” Glancing left and right, you're careful to make sure no one is leaning in. Just to be safe you lean forward and lower your voice. “-I brought this kid back to life. Dragged his soul away from the void, shoved it back into his body, and used metal magic to bind it to his corpse. Sure enough, once I restarted his heart and repaired everything he was right as rain again.”

Darzi stares at you. She's long since let the liquid metal of her armor peel away from her head and arms, pooling it in her torso. She leans forward and places an unsteady hand on your shoulder, her voice skeptical, and perhaps just slightly terrified. “You're telling me, that you brought this kid back to life. After his soul had already left his body.”

You nod. “Yep. His soul was behaving really strangely. It was drifting towards the space where the portal to the void used to be. All the souls of the dead were. I just reached out, pulled his back, and shoved it in. Pretty easy when you think about it. I'm not really sure what's going to happen when he wakes up though, so I thought I'd tie him up. Just in case he turns into some sort of... void-tainted monstrosity.”

Chryssa simply nods, utterly unaffected. “That was wise on your part. It would be a waste to bring someone back to life only to kill them shortly after.”

Darzi leans back, resting the back of her head against the side of the cart and staring up at the rapidly darkening night sky. “I don't really think you understand the gravity of this situation, Chryssa. I don't think this has happened... ever, in history. Not even the Rhynians managed this so far as I'm aware.”

Holding up a hand, you interrupt. “To be fair, I think this sort of thing only works in very specific circumstances. A lot of souls just winked out, vanished. No time to mess with them. The portal was somehow affecting the souls that didn't wink out, but instead disappeared into where the portal used to be. Not that many people die near that powerful a disturbance in the veil at the exact moment that a very powerful Vatis happens to be tending to their wounds.”

Profectus throws his arm around your shoulders, drawing you into a sort of comradely half-hug. “This fuckin' darkie right here, you listenin' to me? This darkie! This fuckin' guy! God damn genius, is what I'm saying.” He rambles on, words slurring into a drunken jumble. You think you get the point, more or less, but you can't say that with any certainty. Perhaps he was drunker than you'd initially thought.

As she comes to realize that she seems to be the only one of your companions who's shocked by this turn of events, she looks to Mortia for support. However, Mortia is fast asleep. As she well should be, the woman looks absolutely terrible. Realizing this she just shakes her head, incredulous. “If this works out, Mikhael. If this works... how did you even do this? You said Metal magic? Was it all Metal?”

Well, it wasn't entirely Metal but it was mostly Metal. “I used the Manipulate effect drag the soul back, but other than that yeah. It was just straight Metal magic. All I had to do was reinforce the shard of divinity which lies at the heart of all mortal souls and the shell which seems to hold that shard in place reformed all on its own.”

Your companion sighs, rubbing her eyes wearily. “All I'm going to say, and then I'll shut up and wait to see the results. All I'm going to say is that once word gets out of what you've accomplished here, Metal Vatis are going to be in very high demand all of a sudden.”

You feel the need to emphasize that this was a special circumstance. “It's not that simple, Darzi. Again, I think it was the fact that the portal had only just recently closed that allowed me to accomplish this magical feat. Had the veil not been as thin as it was, then his soul would've merely vanished.” Some voice, in the back of your head, tells you that you have the resources necessary to enchant a stone which would achieve the same effect. You're not sure if it can be trusted, conisdering the sheer number of voices you hear in your head these days.

She waves a hand dismissively. “That's not the point, Mik. My point is if word gets out that bringing someone back to life after they've well and truly died is possible, then people aren't going to listen to logic or reason. They're going to demand you, and other Vatis, bring their dead children and parents and siblings and so on and so forth back from the dead. Even though you and I both know that such a thing is impossible. We need to keep this quiet, at least for now.”

Huh, she's actually had the same thought you did. You suppose that's not really surprising, great minds and all that, but you're still glad that everyone's on the same page. “I completely agree. Word of this doesn't leave this cart. For all we know the boy could turn out bad and try to kill everyone he sees, or he could have the mind of a newborn. It's just not worth risking all that attention right now.”

With the issue apparently resolved, you reach into your cloak and pull out the Metal Codex. You spare a glance in Mortia's direction but she's fast asleep. If she was hoping to take advantage of your veritable library of books then she'll have other opportunities, surely.

(Still writing, just wanted to post this portion before launching fully into the book. Shit's going to take a while.)

>If she was hoping to take advantage of your veritable library of books then she'll have other opportunities, surely.
We could just, y'know, take one of our effects books out and just plop it in her lap for when she wakes up. No biggie Mik.
>>
>>43248865
>>43248870

Isn't this the premise sort of with the Phoenix belt?
>>
Can Slow+Destroy be used to slow down destructive effects or will it always just cause destruction slowly?
>>
We could totally take these soul ideas and combine it with the concepts of the brooches and make a thing that captures the wearer's soul on death and then transmits it to secure storage in a remote location to get blasted by water and metal magic until a fresh body pops out of the vat.
>>
>>43248865
Nah, we have the runes necessary to make something that will force a soul to stick around.
>>
>>43248977
>mik essentially invents mind uploading, forever immortalizing all within the system
>>
>>43248934
We have more runes, narrow it down. Use Slow+Destroy+Invert if that's the case.

Or Contain+Destroy+Fast to wreck anything that the rune touches. Maybe have blood+Metal be triggers so that it chews through armour and flesh?

Or we could enchant Chryssa's arrows with mark & Attract so that they could home in on each other. So she could hit somone with one arrow, and then all the other arrows would seek them out regardless.
>>
>>43249041
Then arrows would home in on the user retard.
>>
>>43249041
If we learned the Mark effect we could make a railgun with homing bullets.
>>
>>43248981
Yes but why stop just there? Why only stop at forcing a soul to stick around, and not go further into making a device that will cover the other steps that allow resurrection? WHY STOP EVEN THERE? Why not stabilize it into a wide area effect and allow it to use this process actively on perhaps all visible soldiers as they battle? BUT WHY STOP THERE? Why not make a device that alters those effects into malicious constructions, magical technology that rots whoever we deem unworthy of life and limb? Why not maximize these devices into sets and subsets and teach our family how to best deploy and utilize them for all purposes security and territory acquisition? Why not deploy such massive weapons of ultimate destruction on false-souled bipedal war golems and flood the war machine of the Shah with the sort of weaponry that could only create the most perfect world power, the greatest deterrent that will best even our ancient Hiacian brethren. Ever further into the future, never surrender to the malign fates of inferior gods! The only enemy is time! (and Soma's internet connection)

>>43248977
>>43249041
These gentlemen are the future! Are you?!
>>
>>43249090
We will never enchant again.
we could have learned the vys rune without sucking cat dick as well, but youbpeople were too retarded for that. Mik literally just had to look at it and write it down.

Okay guys, put down the spice.
We may not want to explore resurrection tech or magic or magitech at all.

We haven't even seen if the boy is actually alright.
Patience, please.

Is it fun for you to be perpetually salty?

It's still there, isn't it? Just a couple dozen levels of Rhynian mines away from the surface. Soma's confirmation of us being able to discern runes from meditation on our artifacts notwithstanding, it ain't that far.

Oh, I get it now. You're trying to get us to go back there so we can get Al-Gasreed back.
He's dead man. He ain't gonna be there even if we do go back.
