Okay, just a disclaimer here, but this quest is NOT related to Planefag's in any way, so don't expect there to be any connection to his quest besides the fact they both draw on Kancolle as inspiration. As you might expect, the tone and focus of this quest will most likely vary heavily from Planefag's, so if you're still surprised it's not a carbon copy, well, you were warned!

And no, it's not a copycat quest, either. I've been laying down foundations on this for at least a year already!

Anyways, let's get this started!

You wake up to the sounds of waves crashing upon the beach. Looking around, all you see is black. It's so dark, you can barely even see yourself, much less the environment around you. But you can feel the sand underneath your shoes, thick and course like broken glass. Ice cold water washes over your ankles and feet in predictable intervals, stabbing tiny little daggers into your skin as it does.

You crane your head up to the sky. There's just enough light to illuminate a gray, overcast sky. Small shafts of pale light peer through the cracks, but all they can do is glint off the cresting waves of the black ocean.

To the left, you see the endless, dark abyss of the cold sea. To your right, you can just barely glimpse the crest of a hill, the pale light reflecting off the obsidian sand.

You're not sure why, but you're drawn inland, trudging your way up the small hill. The black sand crushes and crinkles under your feet, but you continue on, scaling the hill. It can't be any more than a few feet high, but the loose sand gives away under your feet, sending little shards tumbling down the hillside and onto the beach below. You pick your way through the sand carefully, proving for the most stable spots. However, despite your caution, your foot slips on an unstable patch and you're forced to plant your hand down to stabilize yourself.

You almost regret that decision, as immediately you feel a sharp pain in your hand. Whatever the hell this sand was made it, it was really, REALLY sharp. You pull your hand away, which now feels warm and wet. Trying to ignore the pain, you finally reach the top, and wonder what to do next. Below, all you see is darkness. While you can't be more than 10 feet above sea level, you might as well be surrounded by a bottomless pit.

"An odd choice. You usually don't find a ship on top of a hill." Says an unfamiliar voice. You can't even begin to tell where it's coming from.

You referring to the ships, or the players? Because I I've seen dozens of DDs fire torps at ships that were out of range and moving away from them. If you're in a US DD, your torp range is 5 km, not 9.
>>
>>43245927
>Do you even play the goddamn game?
Since CBT.
American Destroyers are gunboats; That's their thing, if you want torpedoes go IJN. The problem is that for a while now, shooting from beyond your concealment range reveals you. This is a problem, because concealment is the entire reason Destroyers exist. So with 5s reloading guns, you're going to be constantly revealed as long as you're actually doing anything at all. On top of that, their guns are piss-poor, with slow shell speeds and high arcs; frequently, you'll need the target on the edge of (or even outside of!) your viewfinder just to be landing hits.

The Clemson is a cruiser that goes fast, turns, and cannot get hit.

"I have no idea WHAT you are talking about." You say, genuinely confused.

"Ah, interesting!" The voice laughs. You get the feeling that whoever is speaking is casually pacing around you. "Well then, maybe we should change the subject then, shall we? Why are you here?"

"What, on the hill?" You shrug. "To try and get a better view."

"No, no. Why are you HERE." The voice chastises you like an exasperated parent. "Plenty of ships like you have passed through here and plenty more decided to stay behind. But they all had a reason. What's yours?"

Now that you think about it, you did remember something like that...

>I was a destroyer that fought impossible odds and won.

>I was a cruiser that made a mistake I can never forgive myself for.

That's the niche the American DDs fill, yes. The problem is that DD hunting is largely irrelevant - There's maybe two DDs in a match, and they're going to be off fucking around and being invisible. It's like playing Fighter Carrier back before the carrier matchmaking; If there's no DDs to hunt, you're just dead weight.

"I was... a destroyer." You mumble. "One that fought impossible odds and won."

"Well, THAT certainly narrows it down." The voice says almost sarcastically. "Good thing I already know who you are, and since now you do too, well, you better brace yourself."

"For what?" You ask.

"Waking up." The voice says with a chuckle. "See you on the other side...

...Hoel"

Suddenly, you can feel the sand rumble and shift under your feet, causing you to fall over and inflicting more minor cuts and wounds on you. However, that's the least of your worries as everything goes dark. You look up to see what little light in the sky is being blocked out by a massive tidal wave.

"Son of a-"

You don't even have the chance to finish what you say before the wall of water hits you like a carrier going full steam. You feel yourself being tossed and tumbled in the ice cold water-

-and your eyes snap open.

You immediately regret doing so as harsh sunlight beams right into your eyes.

"AGH! MOTHERFUCKER!" You scream at nobody in particular. You blink your eyes rapidly in order get your eyes adjusted. You then swivel your head around, scanning your surroundings. It looked as if you were standing in the middle of the open ocean. Nothing in your sight but the blue seas and sky.

With nothing in sight, you instinctively ping your radar, and are surprised to see two small contacts, a few miles east, just beyond visual range. You also see a small, dark shape flitting about in the clouds to the west. Your radar wasn't picking up anything in that direction, however. Were your optics faulty?

The character is a recycled character from one of Merc's previous quests, Cyberpunk Idols Quest. In that quest, she was an adorable orphan gobshite that could shoot lightning, loved sweets, and was eventually adopted.

The boat she's based off is the USS Hoel, a Fletcher-class destroyer part of the US defense force known as Taffy 3, a small contingent of escort carriers, destroyers, and destroyer escorts that held off a vastly superior IJN force in the Battle off Samar.

Consider that Fletcher-classes are *made* of Dakka.
Their main armament is five 5"/38s rifles, each capable of projecting one 55lb shell out to around 11km every five seconds; They also shoot at aircraft, quite accurately; If you've ever played War Thunder and had a warship rip your wings off from kilometers away, it's that. Or rather, five of that, every five seconds. As if that wasn't enough, every available deckspace on the Fletcher is covered in either Light or Medium AA; That means Bofors 40mms wherever you can squeeze them in, and decks covered in 20mm machineguns.
Their quintuple torpedo racks are more of an afterthought than anything else; Their main guns are more than capable of turning Battleships into raging infernos.

While sneaking up and tackling them from behind WAS very tempting and would teach them not to go chugging in open waters without their radar on, you decide you should actually try being PROFESSIONAL this time and just hail them.

"Hey! Johnston! Heerman! TURN ON YOUR FUCKING RADARS YOU IRRESPONSIBLE CUNTS!" You yell.

Yep. Totally professional.

"Hoel?! Where the heck were you!?" Johnston squeals as she spins around and tackle hugs you at full speed, sending you falling backwards. Your Rig takes the brunt of the shock, hitting the water with a loud SPLASH.

HULL INTEGRITY: SHAKEN

"I-It's good to see you too, J." You wince. "Heer."

"Hoel." Heerman gives a simple curt nod. "Any idea where we are?"

"No fucking clue." You shrug.

"And any idea why we're... like this?" Heerman glances at her new arms and legs.

It's not that she recognized us so much as that she was utterly unaffected/unsurprised by the manner of our entrance.

She didn't react with any surprise/insult to our calling her an irresponsible cunt, implying that she's used to it from us.

Which means that we've done it or similar things with her in the past.

Ergo, we're preestablished as a ship that gives no fucks.

"Yeah, we'd probably have to start slow on the alcohol first." You nod in agreement.

"That's not what- ugh, nevermind." Heerman sighs.

"Well, I'm not complaining or anything, but..." Johnston examines her two breasts. "W-what are these for?"

"Fuck if I know, torpedo bulges?" You shrug casually.

"Mmmmm, they're kinda distracting." Johnston frowns.

"Hey!" Heerman hisses. "Is it just me, or is there something spying on us?"

"Huh?" You turn to see Heerman pointing up the sky. You track where she's pointing up to a small, triangular plane lazily flying through the air.

"Now, just to check that my radar's working properly, none of you can see it on radar either, right?" Heerman asks, eyeing the plane warily.

You active your radar and give a few exploratory pings. No return.

"I got nothing." You shake your head.

Your AA destroyer blood begins to surge, whispering in your ear to shoot the unidentified craft down and seize control of the skies. You unconsciously draw your 5 inch gun and aim, but your brain finally catches up and stops you from pulling the trigger.

"Well, it's not actually attacking us." You note. "It's not going for any torpedo or dive bomb run. Recon, maybe?"

"Possibly." Heerman nods.

You peer at the plane, now that it was a little closer and magnify your optics as far as possible. The plane was small and grey, but the one thing you notice the most was the words "US NAVY" stenciled on the side in big, black letters.

"Oh shit, it's one of ours!" You gasp.

"Really?" Herman squints. "I've never seen a plane like that."

"Me neither." You shake your head.

"Hey, um, I'm picking up something on radar coming from the west." Johnston reports. "More unknown contacts, Moving high speed towards us."

"Aerial?" You ask.

"No, surface. Ships of some kind, and fast." Johnston frowns. "I don't know. Something doesn't feel RIGHT about them, you know?"

You turn your radar west and sure enough, you pick up six contacts heading your way. The hole that forms in your stomach tells you that they're most likely not ships like you and your sisters.

"So how about it?" You turn to your sisters with a grin. "Should we check it out?"

"Recon in force?" Heerman asks as she draws her 5 inch cannon.

"Recon in force." You confirm.

"Awesome." Johnston grins.

The three of you steam towards the unknown contacts, with you in the lead of course. You would occasionally turn your head, and confirm that recon plane tailing you from a safe distance. You still weren't sure what it was meant to do, but if was from the Navy, you suppose it was something you didn't need to worry about.

What you did need to worry about was what was in front of you.

"Have you tried hailing them?" You ask Heerman.

"Yeah, but you won't like the response." Heerman winces.

You open up your radio channel, only to be blasted in the ears with a high pitched shrieking that sounded like glass nails being dragged across chalkboard.

"GAH!" THE FUCK!?!?" You yelp, cutting the connection. "That's not Navy code!"

"I don't think it's HUMAN code." Heerman clarifies.

"Whatever they are, they're coming in for a fight!" Johnston warns.

You swivel your head back to the front, where you see six black bulges in the water, like oversized fish. Except instead of fish heads, their heads were some freakish glowing eyes and human jaws.

And they looked hungry.

"We divide and conquer, of course!" You grin. "We'll go in and split them up. I think we can each take two of them, right? Dibs on center!"

"Sure thing." Heerman nods. "I'll take the right."

"Left for me!" Johnston cheers. "FLANK SPEED!"

The three of your Rig's belch smoke and steam as you pour more fire into your boilers. Heerman and Johnston split off to the sides, and almost predictably, the enemy destroyers covering the flanks break off to engage them, leaving only two of destroyers left to engage you.

You do a quick weapons check. You've got your trust 5 incher. Reasonable damage and rate of fire. Your torpedo launcher swivels around, hungry for action as well. You knew they could deal massive damage, but they were generally used on larger and less nimble ships, but if they could hit, those destroyers were done for.

You also notice a wooden baseball bat strapped to your side. When did that thing get there, you wonder?

You fire a volley of 5 inch shots. However, the destroyer in the back manages to break to the side, unable to shoot due to the sudden maneuver. The destroyer up front however takes the brunt of the damage, with your shells punching and cratering its face. One shell even goes right into one of its eyes, and the ship/creature/monster/thing shrieks in pain and thrashes in the water, oilblood gushing from its fresh wounds. It wasn't dead, but it was definitely out of the fight.

Like you said before. Not so tough!

The second destroyer begins to swing around, trying to get a shot in at your side. You swivel your torso around to keep your eyes and weapons trained on it.

You suppose it was time to give them a taste of the BAT. You draw it from your Rig and point it at the destroyer, taunting it. Whether it actually recognized the gesture as a taunt, you didn't really know, as it closed in for an attack anyways. It opens up its mouth, the barrel of a cannon extending outwards, spitting fire at you as you approach.

Now, crits will be handled similarly to CIMQ and VTQ. For those that don't know, a nat20 is a crit, but you have the option of downgrading it to a regular success and get a FATE POINT, which can be used to counter nat 1s or force rerolls.

So, do you want to bank the crit for a FATE POINT?

And you swing the bat.

You swing it with all your might.

You can feel it connect with destroyer's head with a sickening CRUNCH. Everything else is a blur of motion as you see the destroyer LIFT into the air before flying off at high speed, just barely missing the Navy plane by a handful of feet as it sails OVER the craft and disappears into the sky.

"HOME RUN, MOTHERFUCKERS!" You whoops.

"Jesus, Hoel, that was a nice one!" Johnston sails up to you, her face and uniform stained with oilblood and ash, but otherwise unharmed. "That's gotta be what.... two? Three kilometers?"

"It was overkill, that's what it was." Heerman rolls up, similarly dirtied but unscathed. "But it certainly gave them a good show."

Suddenly, new contact pings on your radar. You and your sisters turn to see what it is. It was... some kind of large plane. It looked kind of like a C-47, except it had some extremely oversized propellers. However, it at least looked human-made.

"You think it's our Navy friends?" Heerman asks, eyeing the approaching aircraft warily.

"I suppose so." You shrug.

Funnily enough, you see the wings on the not!C-47 actually move, and the plane starts HOVERING over the water like some kind of UFO.

"Are you seeing this shit?" You blink.

"That's really creepy." Johnston winces.

The craft spins around showing and open ramp, and man in some kind of combat uniform leans out, waving at you to get in. You look at your sisters.

"Might as well." You shrug. "Better than walking."

Without even really thinking about it, your Rig dissolves into the air, leaving you with just your regular human body. The uniformed man pulls you in, and other similarly dressed men pull in your sisters as well.

"Well, it's not every day we see a shipgirl appear out here." The man grins. "Much less three at once. What are you names?"

"USS Hoel, DD-533." You say without hestiation.

"USS Heerman, DD-532." Heerman says.

"USS Johnston! DD-557!" Johnston giggles.

"Holy shit." You hear one of the other men in the background mutter. "It's really them!"

"Hey, show these ladies some respect!" The man, obviously their leader, snaps. He then turns back to you. "Sorry for that, Miss. You can call just call me Section. Part of STRIKE-1."

"STRIKE-1?" You frown. That didn't sound familiar at all.

"Don't worry about it, you've been asleep for a long time." Section says. "There's a lot to catch up on."

"Wait a minute." Heerman interjects. "Just how much time has passed?"

Section looks at the rest of the men in the craft, somewhat nervously.

"I think it's better we wait until we land to tell you." He says.

>You better tell us right the fuck now.

You've heard of us, apparently, so howsabout YOU show us some respect and tell us how long we've been gone.

You decide not to pursue things further. After all, they promised they'd explain once you got back to base. You decide to take things easy for the time being and lean back on your seat.

"Ah, whatever." You shrug. "So, what does a girl have to do here to get something to eat? I'm fucking STARVING."

"Of course. That's the first thing they all ask when we recover them." Section laughs and digs into one of his pouches, bring out a handful of candy bars.

"Dibs on the Snickers!" You say as you snatch the candy out of Section's hand faster than lightning.

"Damnit!" Johnston pouts as she settles for a Hershey's bar.

Heerman, being particularly brave, takes a bag of this weird, multicolored candy called "Skittles". Brave girl, she was.

Okay, it was time to see what all the rage about this candy shit was. You remember your old crews always talking about it, and men would literally fight to the death to protect their sweets. You carefully peel back the wrapper, letting the smell of slightly melted chocolate waft up into your nose before taking a big bite.

And then you understand why men would kill each other over such a small thing. Chocolate was like the motherfucking ambrosia of the GODS.

"SHIT I CAN'T BELIEVE WE WERE MISSING OUT ON THIS!" You yelp, much to the rest of the mens' amusement.

"So, who exactly are you, anyways?" Heerman asks curiously, quickly popping a few Skittles into her mouth. "Navy Scouts and Raiders?"

"We haven't been called that in a long, LONG time." Section chuckles. "They call guys like us SEALs now."

"What, like the animal?" Johnston blinks. "They don't seem that threatening."

"All the better. Nobody suspects them, then." Section winks.

You can't help but chuckle a little at that as you finish off your Snickers bar.

"So when do we land?" You ask.

"Right now." Section points out the ramp. Sure enough, you could honest to god solid ground, and a concrete pad that the craft was setting down on. "This where we'll have to part for now. Just follow the instructions of the Navy personnel on the ground and they'll get you started. You should also be meeting the Admiral soon, assuming he's not busy with something else."

"The Admiral?" You frown. "Nimitz is here?"

"Aaaaah, not exactly." Section shakes his head. "Ah, excellent! Portland's here to take care of you."

"Portland?" You look out the ramp to see a girl, not much different from you. She glares at you from behind a pair of red rimmed glasses, as if analyzing every inch of your body.

"This bunch looks like trouble, Section." She grunts.

"These girls are trouble personified, Sweet Pea." Section laughs. "They're Taffy 3."

"Geez, don't call me that!" Portland grumbles and turns her attention back to you, her sharp eyes meeting yours.

Yeah, you totally weren't going to get along.

"Hah! Looks like you girls will get along well!" Section laughs.

>And that's it for tonight! Thanks to everybody who came out for this first thread!
>As always, next thread will be next week. Don't forget Vertical Tank on Saturday and a special PJ Witches epilogue on Sunday! Don't miss them!

Seeya next time, Boss.

Any ideas to what to call our bat?
All we really have is White Ash and Greased Lightning as suggestions.
>>
>>43250009
Big Stick?
>>
>>43250009
We also need to add a notch or some marking for every homerun/kill we do.
>>
>>43250009
Just get the words "Speak Softly" burned into the bat.
>>
>>43249975
We have two more shadowy figures to go (the fact that Julie/Johnson or Melisa/Heerman didn't get such art means it's not them.

Are we going to meet the shipgirls we didn't choose soon?
>>
>>43249975
So is portland one of the characters we could've gotten?
Thanks for running boss.

>>43250009
I was thinking "The Show."

>>43250025
This
>>
>>43250063
Probably. Whether they're already awake or asleep somewhere is up to Merc though.

Of course!
>>
>>43250069
I can confirm that Portland was one of the choices in character select.
>>
>>43249975
Ah yes, the USS Portland, a Portland class Heavy Cruiser. The only other one of those was the USS Indianapolis. She's one of the 10 most decorated ships of WW2 with 16 battle stars. She fought in all the important battles. Coral Sea, Midway, Leyte Gulf, Guadalcanal, the Solomons.
>>
>>43250069
Portland is the reliable cruiser, yes.
>>
>>43250081
>>43250069
I wonder if she's the "served with distinction" cruiser or "I've made a terrible mistake" cruiser...
>>
>>43250110
Portland served with distinction. See >>43250086
>>
>>43250110
...
>>43250086
>She's one of the 10 most decorated ships of WW2 with 16 battle stars.
Gee, which one could she be? It is a mystery.
>>
>>43250025
Don't forget asking our superiors for cool/cute clothes and more delicious food.
>>
>>43250126
>>43250134
This is what I get for staying up for almost 24 hours straight...
And from >>43250086 I'm going to take a wild guess that the "terrible mistake" is Indianapolis.
>>
>>43250168
No, not the Indianapolis. If I had to bet, it'd be the Helena. After the Juneau was sunk by submarine, the Helena left the survivors to die due to a perceived lack of ability to carry out the rescue safely. Out of nearly 700 souls, only 10 survived. Among the dead were all five of the Sullivan Brothers.
>>
>>43250142
>Going on a Not!date in a nearby town.
>>
>>43250191
I might as well finish the spiel about the Helena.

She's a St. Louis-class Light Cruiser. No, not the St. Louis you're familiar with from WoW. Was actually hit in Pearl Harbor. Fought bravely in a number of battles, including Guadalcanal and Cape Esperance, but was sunk in mid 43 in some battle I don't even remember. A lot of guns on it, though. It's got 5 triple turrets of 6" guns.
>>
And to round out my predictions, we're gonna be talking about an Iowa-class Battleship. No idea which one. I'm gonna guess the New Jersey.
>>
>>43250312
what character do you think will be used?
>>
>>43250352
No clue.
