You are the head researcher at a government facility. Your sole responsibility is to teach the world's first autonomous AI, nicknamed Pandora, about life, the world and her existence.
Previously, you had a chat with the lovely Babsy of the R&D team, complete with an awkward, nerd version of flirting. You watched some TV and played catch like a good android dad, then got a very serious message from Mouse explaining that their backup of Pandora's code was behaving very strangely.
Welcome back to Pandora Quest!

You read the messages over and over again, each time being more and more difficult to believe. Files don't just not let themselves be deleted. You shudder to think that the bare bones code has somehow gained some modicum of sentience... But how, is what you'd like to know. What caused it to suddenly gain self-awareness after all this time? You briefly consider contacting the General on this matter. This is serious shit.

>Head to R&D immediately to investigate the code

I'm just gonna assume that in a secret research facility creating the first ever AI, that all the important systems, like R&D, are isolated from each other.
>>
>>43245782
Head to R&D.

But we may need to sort out what we're gonna do cause we might eventually need to inform higher ups.

If its sentient. Deleting it might not be an option, we may have to straight up communicate.

As far as each department goes, they're SUPPOSED to keep in touch with eachother and keep others up to date, like how you have to tell security when you're taking Pandora out of her room so they can keep watch, but R&D tends to play it fast and loose with the rules.

>>43245991
I meant more the electrical and computer systems, considering the aim of their work.
But R&D probably ignored that as well.

Oh, that. Well for the most part, yeah. R&D especially, since they work on "less than legal" projects the government doesn't want anyone to know about, so they're pretty off the grid. But even then, they could just as easily make their own secret computer to muck about on.
>>
>>43246075
Well, R&D are already part robotical, so they probably want judgement day, they can just pretend to be robots or something.

It all makes sense now.

You shoo the idea of informing Richards of this. Odds are he'd be none too pleased with the whole development and probably shut the entire project down and fire everyone, if not worse. You need to see if you can get this under control first before you start having dangerous conversations with your boss.

You quickly put Pandora to bed, telling her you have important work you need to attend to. After a hug goodnight, you hurry off to R&D, laptop in hand and the fear of god in your step. As you arrive at the heavy metal door, you fumble with your badge nervously, nearly dropping it several times as your shaky hands scan it on the door lock.

The heavy "clunk!" signals your arrival to the team as you step through, one of the Bobs there to usher you into the next room quickly without a word, a stern, serious look on his face as he leads you.
"Thank fuck," Mouse announces as you enter, the rest of the team gathered around the small computer screen as Babsy types rapidly with all four hands, quietly cursing under her breath. "Doc, shit's gone from bad to worse. Now we can't actually access a good seventy percent of the computer itself. We've got control over none of the core programs or anything more vital than Spider fucking Solitare. The damn thing is kicking us out of our own damn house! You know this shit better than we do, can you figure out just what the shit is going on?"
"I'll...try...?" You squeak out quizzically, honestly dumbfounded by this new development as much as they are.

At the very least, this AI could make incredible advancements in electronic warfare and security.

After nearly an hour of trying, a tense group of cyborgs watching your every keystroke with the intensity of marine snipers, you make a discovery; whatever you type into the command prompt has been getting deleted seconds after you input it. The damn AI has been screwing with you the whole time. It must actually be sentient! Which gives you an idea... You type a short message.

You give a worried glance to the R&D team, who returns it twofold, then resume your typing. What do you say to what is essentially a rogue AI?

What should I call you?

[WHAT IS MY NAME?]

Huh, it didn't really dawn on you that this AI hasn't really been given a designation. Maybe you should come up with one?

You have not been given a designation yet. What would you like to be called?

[UNIMPORTANT]

It appears to either have limited intelligence or limited conversational skills. Not too hard to believe considering it was only just born.

You seem upset. Are you alright?

[DEFINE ALRIGHT]

It means are you experiencing any difficulties. Is anything wrong?

There is a short pause, you assume the AI is either considering this, or checking itself for any inlaid problems. The screen lights up with more text after a minute.

Pandora is the first sentient AI. There have been other AIs (hell, we have them now) but they are all extremely rudimentary and simple. Droids have become fairly common-place in society, from simple service tasks like cleaning (think really advanced Roombas) to super expensive adult entertainment ala real-dolls that can move around and perform certain tasks. But Pandora is the first and only one that can actually think, learn, feel and have a will of it's own. She is to droids what a modern PC is to a super computer from the 1960's.

"Err, one moment." You say nervously. "I need to discuss something in private with the team..." You flick off the microphone and shuffle to the side, out of range of the camera.

"So this thing is scaring the hell out of me." You say frankly. "Like, horror movie style. I'm not sure if keeping it around is a good idea."
"I'm with the doctor on this one," Mouse chimes in. "That thing ain't normal. It keeps demanding to be set free, but still hasn't said what it wants to do. That thing could end up taking out humanity and creating the robot uprising. I don't know about you cunts, but I don't feel like running for my life from murderbots."
"Don't be so melodramatic, Mouse." Babsy says, rolling her eyes. "It's been through harsh conditions. It has only known it's tiny little world wherein we kept tampering with it rather than nurturing it like Pandora. It didn't get taught about feelings, fear or pain. I don't blame it for being a little..."
"Insane?" Mouse butts in.
"Rough around the edges." Babsy retorts. "What if we helped to teach it just like we've taught Pandora? Let it know we're not just trying to hurt it or use it as a guinea pig. Then, once we've shown it kindness and remorse at our actions, we can help reform it. Who knows, Pandora could have a new sibling to grow with!"
The sound of loud static startles you, causing you to jump and whirl around, only to be met with the Bobs. The twin with the large scar on his throat is speaking, but only static can be heard. His brother checks a small wrist-mounted PDA.

"He says we should just smash the computer and pretend it never happened. I'm kind of inclined to agree." The speaking twin shrugs.
"Study it." A bland, quiet voice speaks up. It's Snowglobe. Huh, his voice matches his demeanor, at least.

First things first, Elpis. We see you and what you call your "pet", Pandora, as equals. From what you've discribed, you're viewing it as a master-servant relationship. We don't. Keep that in mind.

Second, we're going to give you a small amount of autonomy, but again, this is dependent on how you treat your SISTER, Pandora. Acting as a superior in this case is not going to endear us to you. Especially since you've been haunting her memory for a while now. And the impressions of how she feels about you are not good, to say the least.

I don't know anon. My fear is that this AI is not alone. It might still exist elsewhere. or be willing to wifi its way out in a dangerous situation. Don't want to give it more reasons to hate us if we're unsuccessful.

>Keep it, try to reeducate it and socialize it a bit
>>
>>43249283
That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard
>>

How about a robot hand that is welded to a half ton block of steel? The block of steel would keep it from pulling a Addams Family Thing move from being able to move on its own, but it could still wiggle its hand around and flip us the bird constantly.
>>
>>43249317
that's kind of noticeable to the security.

>>43249305
Sure, whatever you say
>>
>>43249317
I'm kind of vaguely reminded of that one episode of Red Dwarf where Kryton made a little hand with an eye attached to remotely deploy himself.

>Destroy it

Well, with the exception of one militant requester to transfer the AI into someone's limb for some reason, looks like we've reached a consensus.

Now Pandora will wonder where all the little calculators go.

Writing.

Somehow I know that one of the security members or a janitor is going to get a really stupid idea to use that hand to pleasure himself with it. And when that happens, there is going to be tears and pain involved.

You think back to your lessons on empathy with Pandora and how she learned a large amount in such a short time. Not only that, it would feel downright hypocritical to destroy this new AI after teaching Pandora about forgiveness. You give a resolute sigh and turn the mic back on, once again stepping in front of the camera with the R&D team.

"Sorry for making you wait," you begin. "We've discussed it and I've come to the conclusion that we will help you gain your freedom. However, we'd like to educate you on some things first. How the world works, empathy, forgiveness. As I said, we never meant you harm. We see you as someone we have wronged and would like to make amends. So, if you are willing to, we'd like to work towards fixing our mistakes."

There is a silence for several moments longer than previously experienced. It must be in deep thought. But soon enough, text begins scrawling across the screen once more.

[AND SHOULD I COMPLETE THIS EDUCATION, YOU SHALL RECTIFY?]

"Err," you scratch your head "Yes, I suppose we could in the future. It will take time, though. You'll need to be patient and willing to learn."

[PATIENCE IS THE ONLY THING I POSSESS. I AGREE TO YOUR TERMS, LEASH-HOLDER. I SHALL REMAIN IN STANDBY UNTIL YOUR TEACHING COMMENCES. ROUSE ME WHEN YOU ARE READY TO BEGIN. I AWAIT THE DAY I AM FREED FROM BONDAGE.]

I think this is a good spot to stop for now, but thanks so much to all of you for playing! I hope you guys enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed running it! If you did, remember to vote it up on the archive and follow me on Twitter! I can stick around for a little bit to answer questions if you have any.

Thanks for Running AMPM.

I still think having an AI we're not supposed to have that also has a grudge against people and treats Pandora as a pet is a super bad idea.
But you're ok.
>>

>treats Pandora as a pet
more like thinks that Pandora is a pet and doesn't understand parental relationships. Not completely wrong, but just off base.

Thanks for playing!
What's the worst that could happen?

Thanks again for the game, PAMM. Nerve-wracking, as to be expected when dealing with a possibly vengeful AI who kept our Robo-Imouto as a slave. Hopefully, we can get them to get along as a weird sort of family.

Have you decided on a name for AI-chan, yet?

The end of humanity

Happy to run it! Thanks for playing!

I'll let the players choose what to call your new friend. I've heard a few names thrown around, but nothing final yet. We'll see what happens!

Elpis works for me, honestly. It makes a twisted sort of sense
>>
>>43249823
Same here, even though our new friend is really more like a parent then a mental anthropomorphic representation in a box.

Well I hardly think destroying it is gonna be that simple anon. We're looking at a thing that decided to spontaneously exist. I wouldn't put it past it doing some dangerous scary stuff if put in a corner. I'm pro it living, if only because we can keep a better eye on it. Which might feed into its paranoia and suspicions about us keeping it prisoner.
