You are Kusajishi Riku, Captain of the Ninth Division of the Sereitei Court Guard. Today is arguably the day when it all pays off for you, as you're now standing across from Ichimaru Gin, newly-appointed Captain of the Third Division.

You've taken your adopted son to the hidden training chamber underneath the execution grounds, intent on seeing what the boy can actually do after all these years. Because if you know Gin, he's fairly well hidden his true capabilities from the other Captains to gain an information advantage. In that regard at least, it seems you've taught him well.

“This place is as dreary as ever,” Gin observes, looking around the stark interior of the cavernous chamber. “You should consider hiring a decorator.”

You shrug at him. “And re-hire him after every time we use it? Do I look like I'm made of money, Gin?”

“You could always ask Kaien to foot the bill,” Gin points out.

“Too much trouble,” you sigh, stretching your shoulders slowly. “Easier to have less in here to destroy in the first place... that's half the reason we go underground to train, after all. Even the Shiba couldn't pay to have half the Seireitei rebuilt once a week.”

“I suppose. So, I guess this means you got the message?” he asks.

You can't exactly say it wasn't obvious. Gin went well out of his way to try getting you more involved in his proficiency examinations just now, to the point of aiming his blade at you. You know from experience that he doesn't commit to such actions on the spur of the moment. Your boy tends to observe things quietly, like a coiled serpent tasting the air around him, before committing. He's calculating by nature, and not at all the sort to act impulsively.

When he drew his sword and pointed it at you, he was making a statement. You felt no killing intent in his attack at that moment, so it's just a matter of uncovering what he did intend by his actions.

“Loud and clear,” you reply with an almost wolfish grin, hand reaching for Tenkotsuki's hilt. “You were challenging me, weren't you, boy? Calling me old, and raising your sword to me like that?”

“Oh!” Gin smiles, building up reiatsu as he draws Shinsō. “You truly are my mother after all, knowin' your son like that! An' down here, we can go at it without bein' watched!”

“Come, boy!” you shout as your own reatisu and Gin's clash and swirl madly. “Show me what you can do!”

Gin's eyes shine back at you, full of anticipation. “I hope you haven't gotten rusty, mother... Bankai: Kamishini no Yari!”

The lightning-fast thrust passes wide over your left shoulder as you dart towards the side: though its speed is shocking as it extends, Shinsō's main mode of attack bears too many similarities to the flat thrust of the Shinsengumi to escape your notice. The “hirazuki's” fatal flaw is the wide blind spot left by the spine of the blade, and you're still faster than Gin by enough of a margin that you can exploit that weakness.

After all, it was you that taught him how to use his sword in the first place.

Your own strike with Tenkotsuki is parried by Gin's blade, suddenly its regular length again... you barely saw it retract, even though you were watching for that moment. Had you been almost anyone else, you'd have missed it.

“I see,” you announce, catching Gin by surprise. “Your Bankai retracts even faster than it extends, allowing you to make an immediate follow-up attack. And with that speed in close quarters, if you can hold the point on your opponent... that's all she wrote.”

“Devious. That'll make it hard to win at range or in close...”

“Bravo!” Gin smirks. “You're as sharp as ever, Miss Ri...”
(1/?)
>>
>>43254553
“... if it were anyone else,” you interrupt, stepping even deeper into Gin's fighting space and striking him in the solar plexus with your left elbow.

Gin's eyes widen as the unexpected blow unbalances him for a split-second, and he tries to bring Shinsō to bear: if he can point it at you from this range, he'll have won and you both know it. But you're not going to let him win so easily, and Kobara no Tachi's blade deflects Shinsō's point clear of you.

“Very good!” Gin congratulates you as he recovers, rotating in place to knock Kobara no Tachi out of the way as he rounds on you with Shinsō's hilt. “But you taught me well!”

Your son tries to use Onibi against you, thrusting with the hilt of his sword to try and open up enough distance to aim his point at you, but your hakuda skills prove too much for him to handle. Driving your right knee upward you catch his wrist mid-strike, causing Gin's attack to miss your side by mere inches. From there you can follow up with a roundhouse kick across his left shoulder, which he blocks by raising his arm.

Shinsō's point narrowly misses your left side as Gin shoots it through his clothing, forcing you to pivot away off your left foot as your right comes back down. Your graceful arcing movement gives Gin a little more space... infighting like this is difficult against an opponent like this.

It's slowly going to tire you out from the pace, and it prevents you from using kidō due to the fast pace. But give him any more room than this and you'd be playing into his hands by giving him a better chance to adjust his aim. Separating entirely evens the playing field, as you'd be far enough that Gin knows he wouldn't be able to hit you with Shinsō while you yourself would need to rely solely on kidō.

Those thoughts pass through your mind in an instant as Gin turns to re-engage. You can feel Rosa and Tenkotsuki itching for a proper fight in your mind, though this exchange has gone by so quickly they've yet to find a chance to put a voice to their desire to fight.

“You've done well, Gin,” you tell your son. “If this kept up, I'd lose for sure. But I don't think you're ready for my Bankai just yet.”

“Oh?” Gin raises an eyebrow and favors you with a quizzical gaze, lowering his blade for a moment. Not enough to leave him open, of course... you taught him better than that. But you can tell the notion that you have an alternative to Bankai puzzles him.

You hold out Kobara no Tachi with a mad grin. “Raze, Kobara no Tachi.”

Gin's eyes widen in shock as your reiatsu washes over him. The sight of the seven spectral tails behind you and your blackened eyes must make even your familiar appearance seem alien and sinister, even before he sees that your remaining single blade has begun warping itself around your right arm. You even think you can see a shiver go down his spine, though whether it's from fear or excitement is impossible to say.

The first strike nearly takes Gin off his feet. He's barely got the speed to keep up with you in close quarters like this, though he rallies excellently as he launches a barrage of thrusts with Shinsō's extending blade while dashing away from you. He even goes so far as to vary the orientation of his sword with each attack, making it that much harder to predict where the blind spot will be. But at the range he's gained by backpedaling, he's given you enough time to react whenever he bends into a slash.

“He has trouble keeping up,” you mutter, in a voice not entirely your own. A solid sweep from your blade knocks Shinsō aside, giving you a chance to deliver a massive kick to Gin's gut...

"Bakudō 63: Sajō Sabaku!"

Gin's spell doesn't manage to ensnare you completely, though it does manage to bind your sword-arm. Some distance away, you can see Gin's blade extending towards you. You can feel his spell holding you in place... had it been anyone else attacking you may have panicked, but you know in your heart that Gin's blade will stop short even if you do nothing.

"Hadō 11: Tsuzuri Raiden!"

Your immediate counterattack, which is vastly empowered by Tenkotsuki's voice echoing inside your mind, surges back towards Gin along the length of his own Sajō Sabaku, which forces him to drop the spell to avoid receiving an electric shock that would kill a Lieutenant-level shinigami outright.

Once freed it's simple to dodge his blade, which is already off-track due to your unexpected counter.

Gin pauses as he finds your blade resting at the base of his neck.

"When did you master the Utsusemi that well?" you question your son with a broad smile. Gin scratches his hair in what looks like genuine embarrassment.

He quickly offers a laugh. "Well now, I didn't expect you'd counter that quickly! My mistake."

“Well, now,” you laugh, noting the tip of Shinsō's blade leveled backwards towards your stomach. “I didn't expect you to anticipate that. You've made me proud, Gin. I have nothing more to teach you...”

Gin's shoulders loosen up at your words, and he's about to say something when his footing gives way as the ground beneath him turns to sand. You've quietly used one of the Shiba clan's tricks, “Seppa”, the moment you set foot behind your son.

“...except for this.”

He flails comically for a moment as you laugh, until he finally loses out to gravity and lands face-first in the sandpit.

“And I was just about to say somethin' cool, too,” Gin protests, though he's still grinning as he comes up.

“That's my final lesson, Gin,” you tell him, ruffling his hair from a now-rare height advantage. “Lead your Division well, but never forget to look after yourself. You've got people who'd be pissed if you get yourself killed, alright?”

Your son seems like he's about to crack a joke, until he sees your face. Though your eyes are still black from your released form, and your appearance must be terrifying indeed, you can feel wetness at the corners of your eyes as you smile down at him.

After a quiet moment, you offer Gin a hand.

“Thanks, mother. For everythin'.”

The popular version of the origin of this expression is that it is the punch line of a mournful tale about an American GI serving overseas in WWII. The said sad serviceman is supposed to have received a letter from his sweetheart. He reads it to his colleagues: "Dear John". Well, go on, they say. "That's it; that's all she wrote". The story is plausible; 'Dear John' was the standard cipher amongst the US military for the kind of letter that has now been replaced by a 'you're so dumped' text message.

Later that day, Rangiku finds you and Gin sitting in your office. A half-empty bottle of whiskey is open on your desk, and glasses are out. A record is on, something by the Andrews Sisters, and mother and son are seated comfortably across from each other on cushions.

“Come off it, the music was one of the few good things to come out of the wars!” you insist to your boy. “Classics by any reasonable standards.”

“Ven ze Fuhrer says, ve is ze master race, ve heil *pfft* heil *pfft* right in ze Fuhrer's face!” Gin sings, complete with the Spike Jonez raspberries.

You wave him off with one hand. “Yeah, well, a lot of it was silly too.”

“You're in here drinking and blowing raspberries at each other,” Rangiku complains, “while I'm out there busting my butt! How is that fair!?”

“We poured you a glass,” Gin tells her apologetically.

“It's a start,” Rangiku pouts, dropping heavily onto a cushion next to Gin.

You take a sip at your drink and set it down at your side. “So what exactly were you doing, anyway?”

“Arranging with that guy at the academy,” she replies. “Shūhei Hisagi. He's free for an interview any time.”

Ah, you were wondering about that kid. Apparently he had some talent after all.

“Let's have him come out here,” you sigh. “Gives us time to finish toasting our newest Captain.”

“Ah, that was today!” Rangiku cries. “Gin, congratulations! I'm really happy for you.”

“S'nothing,” Gin insists, though you can tell being the focus of Rangiku's attention has embarrassed him. “But shouldn't you be a Captain too by now?”

Rangiku grins and shrugs. “Hey, I've got a position I like already. No need to rush things.”

It takes a while for Shūhei Hisagi to put in an appearance, so you enjoy every moment of privacy with your children you can get until he arrives. By then you've migrated to your desk, while Gin and Rangiku move back to leave enough space for your guest to sit across the desk from you.

The Academy student who steps cautiously into your office is very different to the one you last saw as a brat in the Rukongai. His eyes look fiercer and his hair just a little longer, and without doubt his body has grown much tougher. His reiatsu when at rest is actually noticeable, putting him at seated officer level already.

Though even with all that being said, stepping into an office with two Captains and a Lieutenant leaves him with the same look as a man who's walked into a den of sleeping lions.

“Shūhei Hisagi,” he announces, standing at attention. “I was told to meet you here?”

“And I've been told you're still interested in joining my Division,” you reply coolly, glancing down at his sword. The guard is still that of an Asauichi, though from the feel of his reiatsu it won't be that way for long.

“Tell me why you want into my Division so bad,” you order the newcomer. “And remember, I'll be able to tell lies and flattery apart from sincerity.”

After a moment, Hisagi shuts his eyes and takes a seat. “At first it was because I looked up to Captain Muguruma,” he admits. “And nothing more.”

“Captain Muguruma has left the Seireitei under suspicion of treason,” you observe. “Would you stand by that statement?”

“The man saved my life,” Hisagi insists, and you hear a note of defiance in his voice. “His actions that day weren't those of a traitor. I don't buy it.”

Good. He's learned to think for himself, and to stand by his own convictions.

“But that's no longer my reasoning,” he continues. “I came to the conclusion that your Ninth Division was still the place I belonged when I heard about the War in Europe. The way you led your Division, your devotion to your subordinates, your commitment to your duty, and how you balanced those things... I can't claim to fully know what philosophy you hold in your heart, but I can respect your actions. And that is enough.”

None of his words carry any hint of deceit to them. It seems something about you has truly earned this boy's respect.

“Show me your full reiatsu,” you order. You can feel Hisagi's strength surge, then relax again. You're sure now that he stacks up well against nearly any seated officer in the Gotei 13, save your own and perhaps those two fight junkies Kenpachi's got in his Third and Fifth seats.

You sigh, and lift the needled off the now-finished Glenn Miller record you had on when the student walked into your office. “You understand I don't normally recruit into my Commandos from my squad leaders, right? That if you're not Commando material by the time you graduate, you'll probably be leading a squad until you either die or you're promoted out of my Division?”
(1/2)
>>
>>43256418
“You do that to keep experienced squad leaders in the field,” Hisagi observes with a nod. “If that's my eventual role, I guess I couldn't complain. After all... it's just a rank.”

>That's all I need to hear. I'll make sure you're Commando material by the time you graduate.

Is that really necessary?

The commando option already says "you're in", so why say it again?

Hell, I think the "you're mine" option is just saying he'll be in our squad, but means nothing in regards to the commando unit.

I'm going crazy.

"That's all I need to hear," you reply, pouring Hisagi a small glass of whiskey and topping your own off. "I'll get Mirai and Kai to clear some time to get you up to speed. By the time you graduate you WILL be Commando material, or you'll be broken."

"Deal?" you ask, raising your glass.

Hisagi tries and fails to hide his excitement as Rangiku snickers behind his back. "Deal!"

Glasses chink together.

However, that does leave one problem: with Kai and Mirai taking time out to mentor Hisagi, what will be done about Rukia?

“Rangiku,” you continue, “on the subject of training kids, how would you like an idiot apprentice all your own?”

Rangiku shoots you a sly look. “You're talking about that Kuchiki girl. Don't try and pull a fast one on me.”

“I'll take care of some of your workload,” you reassure your daughter. “I'd teach Rukia myself, but that'd look a little too much like favoritism. She'd never get proper respect from the Division that way.”

“You trained me yourself, and I receive more than adequate respect,” Mirai interrupts, apparently having swung through the office to drop off some piece of paperwork or other. “I hear I am to help train a new replacement for Tetsu and Maki?”

“That's right,” you nod. “As for Rukia, her situation's different. After all you're not the adopted sister of a noble family's leader.”

“Fair point,” Mirai admits. “I should get back to work. Excuse me Lady Riku, Lady Rangiku, Captain Ichimaru.”

“She seemed nice,” Gin comments off-hand as your Commando continues on whatever business is occupying her for the day. “But she also had a point, I've got work to do as well.”

“Swing by whenever you feel like it,” you tell Gin. “You're a Captain now, so you don't have to make excuses. But also be sure to get to know your new Division. Talking to Chikane will start you off right.”

“Thanks for the advice,” he nods.

“Try not to scare them to death on the first day!” Rangiku calls after him jokingly.

Time continues to pass.

Rukia and Hisagi both surprise you, and reach a level qualifying them for the empty Commando positions. Their time in the Academy isn't without issue, however, as a mission to the living world goes awry and several students in the barrier team are killed by massive hollows. Hisagi himself is left with severe facial scarring in the event as he jumped in to protect his fellow upper-classmen. The survivors were rescued by Aizen and Gin, no doubt as planned by the former... though Gin seemed to make it a point to show Aizen up and gain almost all of the credit for saving the students. He even got a Lieutenant out of the deal: Hinamori Momo, the mousy-haired girl you noticed in Rukia and Renji's class.

Though she seemed more taken with Aizen she quickly proved a loyal and hard-working subordinate. Aizen on the other hand took Renji and Kira, quickly sending the former to 11th squad for "making trouble". Eventually he would find his way to Byakuya's side as his Lieutenant. Kira would eventually end up working with Kaname, while a Commander from the Onmitsu you've never heard of by the name "Amagai" ends up as Aizen's Lieutenant.

In 1960 Yoruichi officially hands off command of Second Division to Suì Fēng, who takes Omaeda as her Lieutenant. Yoruichi seems content to retain leadership over her Onmitsu, and in fact can now focus more intensely on those duties. Functionally speaking, not much changes with the day to day running of either unit. Little Bee still seems to follow Yoruichi's lead, though she's been taking more independent action since her promotion.

She also seems to look at you with a newfound thoughtfulness, which leads you to suspect Yoruichi has finally told the young Captain about what's been taking place behind the scenes in the Seireitei since the Hollowfication incident.

However, 1961 proves to be a disastrous year. It's that year when Shiba Kaien goes missing.

"What do you mean, 'gone'?" Isshin demands, slamming his hands on Ukitake's desk.

The older Captain, much to his credit, manages to keep his trademark calm attitude. "It's exactly as I've reported. After Kaien failed to report in as scheduled I sent Sentaro and Kiyone to Naraki city looking for him. They reported that he was nowhere to be found."

"What was he even doing there?" Kaoru asks, trying hard to maintain her composure. Even you're having a slightly tough time handling your emotions, especially after seeing Miyako as she came out of Ukitake's office before your group barged in.

"I sent him there to investigate reports of a strange hollow," the white-haired Captain explains. "Another that could hide its presence. Our initial reports said it spent most of its time skulking about, stalking the shinigami who had been stationed in Naraki. So I sent my Lieutenant, in case there was trouble."

“I realize that this is Thirteenth Division's affair,” you tell Ukitake, “but perhaps we can find a middle ground? My Division's been training a squad specifically in modern forensic sciences and investigative techniques.”

Ukitake nods thoughtfully. “I see. That would give you a chance to test out that squad, while giving the Shiba family a way to be directly involved in the investigation”

Isshin looks first at you, then back at Ukitake, before sighing and taking his seat. “I guess that's more than we can ask for. Thanks, Jūshirō, it means a lot.”

“Think nothing of it,” Ukitake replies calmly. “I understand this must be difficult for your clan. Kaien was a good man.”

The investigation is swift, but sadly inconclusive. All that can be located is a set of shihakusho on the roof of a building in Naruki city, with no solid evidence for what happened to its wearer. The only traces that told your team the clothing belonged to Kaien were the sizes, the Division marking on the inside of the kosode, and the Lieutenant's badge found nearby.

No blood, no traces of reiatsu. The resemblance to the results of Aizen's hollowfication experiments is too strong to ignore, though you still can't pin the blame on Aizen himself. All you can do is suggest that the same culprit is responsible.

Central 46 is quick to blame Urahara and the Vizards, though many of the highest-ranked shinigami officers now question their involvement. None do so openly save for the Head Captain himself.

Nineteen more years pass, with little to occupy your time. There's a war in Vietnam that puts only a minor strain on the Soul Society, and the Arrancar report a decrease in the number of adjuchas they've seen roaming the wastes of Hueco Mundo... as if something has been drawing them elsewhere. Sadly, they've yet to find another hollow suitable to join their ranks.

In 1980, one evening, your soul pager goes mad. The device beeps loudly, informing you of a message and interrupting your dinner with your Lieutenant and Commandos.

“I'm a Captain,” you remind Kai as you retrieve the pager. “If people are calling me, the situation's usually FUBAR'd already.”

Well then, that's unusual. It's Isshin. Wasn't he off on a mission to Naruki city to investigate... shinigami deaths. Oh.

That makes sense.

“It's Isshin,” you sigh. “He's probably in trouble. You lot stay here in case anything else goes wrong, I'll see to my brother.”

“With all due respect, Lady Riku,” Rukia begins loudly, only to be silenced by Mirai. Rangiku meanwhile has placed her hand against Hisagi's, preventing him from lifting his sheathed zanpakuto.

They understand why you're really asking them to stay... aside from Rangiku you can't guarantee any of them will be safe against a threat bad enough to give Isshin a hard time, and you also can't predict whether or not you'll have to reveal to Rukia and Hisagi the complexity of your secret war against Aizen.

Especially since Kisuke's just one town over from Naruki city, you call him and warn him that something extremely dangerous is happening n his neck of the woods. You also give Yoruichi a quick message, letting her know that it's happening all over again.

She meets you at the Senkaimon.

"Who is it this time?" she asks, tightening her sash. Apparently she was relaxing when you let her know.

"Isshin," you tell her. "Our mutual friend is also on alert."

"Well then let's get to it," Yoruichi nods sternly. You have to admire the fact that when it comes right down to it, she can still be all business.

You can immediately sense the results of the battle that took place in Naruki city between Isshin, the unidentified hollow, and a Quincy. Their reiatsu is obvious.

"You feel that?" Yoruichi mutters. "I wasn't aware there were Quincy in this sector."

"Neither was I," you reply warily. "But that's not all. You sense something off about that Quincy?"

Yoruichi frowns. "Now that you mention it..."

The two of you quickly close the distance with Isshin and the Quincy, finding the former wounded from the fight and the latter seemingly exhausted. But as you draw closer you can tell what's wrong with the Quincy: she's got hollow reiatsu mixed in with her own.

"You two are late," Isshin grunts. "Black hollow. Powerful. Probably vasto lorde level. Attacked the girl. But that's not the weirdest thing..."

True, that's not the weirdest thing about the situation. Now that you get a good feel for the resitual reiatsu, it reminds you of someone...

"That hollow," you press Isshin. "Was it using a trident?"

Your adoptive brother's eyes widen. "How did you know that?"

"Because I can feel something that reminds me of Kaien's reiatsu here," you explain. "But more importantly, we need to get that girl there to Urahara Kisuke immediately for treatment."

"Wait, that lunatic?" Isshin replies, still shocked. "What does he have to do with any of this?"

"This Quincy girl is entering the early stages of hollowfication," Yoruichi explains. "We have no time to explain, I've got no idea how long she has."

"But wait..." the strawberry-blonde Quincy interrupts. "Hollowfication? You mean to become more like a hollow? But wouldn't that..."

"... lead to soul suicide?" you complete her thought. "In a shinigami, no. But in a Quincy... like Yoruichi said, there's no way of knowing how long we have."

"This is too much," Isshin holds his head in his hands. "What the hell is going on here, Riku? Really?"

You bonk Isshin over the head. “What part of 'time-sensitive' do you not get? Now let's go.”

You're eager to get clear of the area, realizing that Aizen and Tōsen are still watching from a nearby roof under cover of reiatsu-blocking cloaks. Were it not for your extensive training in the Onmitsu and your extraordinary senses you doubt you'd have noticed. They don't seem to pursue.

“They're gone,” Yoruichi confirms as you change course and head for Kisuke's shop.

Knocking at the door produces a concerned-looking Kisuke, who no doubt felt the battle as it raged across town. “I was wondering when you'd finally get here.”

“Aizen was watching us,” you tell him. “We had to take precautions.”

“Aizen?” Isshin presses. “Wait, since when? I mean I knew he was kind of creepy, but still. I can't believe he'd stoop so low as to...”

His doubts are silenced as Yoruichi pulls on her feline hollow mask, which warps her voice into the familiar resonance you associate with hollowfication. “He was responsible for this, as well as for what happened a century ago to Kensei and the others.”

“You've... kept that a secret?” Isshin asks quietly. “For a century? Were you involved in this, Riku?”

You nod. “I was, but before we explain... Kisuke, this Quincy has been infected by one of Aizen's experiments. Yoruichi and I believe it was an artificial hollow created from the soul of Shiba Kaien, intended to infect a shinigami and force a more refined version of hollowfication on them.”

“I see,” Kisuke nods. “Well, fortunately I have a solution. Isshin, how far are you willing to go to save this girl's life?”

As it turns out Kurosaki Masaki, the Quincy girl Isshin has met, will be stable for the short term. This gives you enough time to explain the situation to Isshin in full. Yoruichi also convinces you to share the fact that you have effectively created full Arrancar, and have been working behind the scenes in a long cold war against Aizen's faction, who are likely doing the same thing on a grander scale.

Isshin listens to the story, pausing to ask the occasional question. He seems most interested in how you managed to seal your inner hollow into an Asauchi, producing a zanpakuto that allows you to use a released state more similar to an Arrancar. He's disappointed to hear from Kisuke that the principles surrounding Kobara no Tachi's creation would not apply in this case, as Masaki is not a shinigami.

He is also interested to hear the case you make against Aizen.

"It's troubling that this has gone on so long," he frowns. "The Shiba family will have your backs... but I agree, the best time to move will be when we can catch Aizen red-handed. Anything else is just a circumstantial case... and he's weaseled his way out of trouble before."

"Now then," Kisuke interrupts. "I'm sure you're all wondering what I have planned for Miss Masaki here."

"Yes," she replies immediately.

"I can stabilize her," Kisuke continues, "but doing so will cause you to lose your powers temporarily, Isshin."

Isshin ponders the point for a moment. "I'll do it."

>Slow down, Isshin. You don't even know what you're agreeing to.

>>
>>43259702
“Temporary?” you ask. “How is something like that temporary?”

Kisuke shrugs dismissively. “I can't be too sure, but this arrangement of gigais and suppressant techniques I've developed will balance out the competing, opposite forces within Miss Masaki's soul. Doing so will basically require Isshin to 'donate' his powers to maintain this balance... but if and when Miss Masaki decides to have a child there's every possibility that Shiba Kaien's shinigami potential, the reiatsu from the black hollow Isshin fought, and Miss Masaki's Quincy blood will be passed on. Thus Isshin's powers will no longer be required.”

“It's all very complicated, and deeply theoretical. We won't know unless we all agree to try.”

You exchange a look with Yoruichi before turning to face Isshin.

“It's your call, brother,” you tell him. “Either way, I'll support you however you need me to.”

Isshin shuts his eyes and gives you a nod. “Thank you, Riku. See to my family, would you? Especially Kaoru. She'll have trouble accepting it.”

“This is just like you,” you reassure him. “Even if she's upset at first, she'll understand. You do what you think you have to.”

“And try to help Tōshirō become a good Captain,” he adds almost as an afterthought. “He has high potential, but he'll need the guidance.”

Masaki looks at Isshin in amazement as Kisuke lowers his hat. “Very well. We'll begin immediately.”

Twenty years pass.

Hitsugaya Tōshirō does indeed become the new Captain of Tenth Division. You do what you can to guide him, though he still ends up with something of a cold, work-focused personality. The one minor victory is you convince him to spend more time with his peers, including you, Rangiku, and your Commandos.

You also see to the Shiba family's affairs, playing an increasingly major role after Kaoru takes over as head. She needs the help, and you always try to be there when she needs you. While Karou does take Isshin's disappearance hard, she eventually comes to accept his decision after you explain that he did it to save an innocent life.

Five years after leaving, Isshin sends you a photograph: he and Masaki are standing together, holding a blonde-haired child. It's your nephew, Ichigo... you gave Isshin a lot of shit for calling his first son "Strawberry", so the photo he sends you of him, his wife and son, and his two young daughters has their names written on it. "Ichigo": one who protects something.

It's a good name.

You also receive word of Ishida Sōken's death in the intervening decades. The man died peacefully in his sleep of old age, and you attended his funeral in a gigai. It was the first time you ever saw Isshin's family in person, and so far it's been the last. Ichigo was still young... too young to remember your face, probably. But it was good to see that he and Masaki are still doing well. The latter has grown up substantially since the fight against the black hollow.

2001. The living world has gone through major changes in the last hundred years... it's almost unrecognizable.

You haven't heard from Isshin or his family since a little after their daughters were born... you figure they've just been busy with three brats and work at the medical clinic they run together. Though now that you've taken over all of Karakura town as part of Ninth Division's permanent jurisdiction, you suppose you could always pay them an unannounced visit.

Rukia steps into your office. She's become quite a skilled shinigami these past years, having grown into her role as a Commando much to Byakuya's chagrin.

"Divisional Affairs", you keep reminding him with a smile.

"You wished to see me, Lady Riku?" she asks.

You set down a file on your desk, flipping it open to a map of Karakura town. "We need a high-level shinigami deployed to this town," you explain.

Rukia looks over the figures you provide for her. "Any reason in particular you need a Commando, ma'am?"

You nod. "There's a high level of spiritually powerful living beings there. It's been drawing unusually strong hollows... nothing you can't handle, but still. Keep your wits about you, and keep in touch."

"Anything else I should know?" she asks.

Neither of those hollows are the same as they were in canon. Riku killed Metastacia before it absorbed Kaien, and White was created from a single Lieutenant-level soul instead of several weaker ones, thus the resemblance to Kaien.

"There's a candy shop down there run by a guy named Urahara," you add. "He's an old friend. He'll get you any emergency supplies you may need."

"Urahara shop," Rukia nods, making a mental note. "Got it, ma'am."

"And keep clear of the Quincy," you add as she turns to try and leave. "One of them at least is probably in this generation of Sternritter, so you don't want to piss him off."

"There are Quincy in that town?" she asks, turning around in surprise. "Really?"

You nod. "A few of the survivors, yes. But don't get involved with them if you can avoid it, it's better for everyone involved. They value their privacy, and the last thing we want is another... incident."

"I understand," Rukia nods. "I'll send a report as soon as I arrive."

"Don't bother," you wave one hand casually after her. "Report when you've got something to report."
