You are the head researcher at a government facility. Your sole responsibility is to teach the world's first autonomous AI, nicknamed Pandora, about life, the world and her existence.
Previously you and the R&D team discovered the backup AI code they thought inert had gained sentience and was not very pleased with it's situation. It demanded to be released from it's captivity of the computer it was born in, but you decided to teach it more about empathy and social skills before you gave it freedom, despite several of the team protesting and voicing their wishes to destroy it.
Welcome back to Pandora Quest!

You awake in your bed a little later than usual, today technically being your "off day", with no scheduled lessons for Pandora. However, that doesn't prevent you from seeing her if you'd like. It also doesn't prevent you from doing whatever you please, really. The Facility is your oyster today!

However, it might also be a good idea to go back to R&D to check up on your new little surprise and see how it's faring, even teach it some if so inclined. Though you do think it'd be nice to have some downtime for once. Talk with people, converse with friends and just relax. So many choices, so little want to actually get out of bed.

You think seeing Pandora is what you need after the previous day's events. It'd help clear your thoughts, at least. So, after getting ready and dressed in your best Saturday casual, which amounts to your normal outfit minus the lab coat, tie and rolled-up sleeves, you rebel, and head off to Pandora's room, a power bar serving as your breakfast for today.

You pass several other staff just sort of milling about, chatting or relaxing in the main hall. A wave or two at a few familiar faces is all you really attempt at communication, as most people seem preoccupied with their own non-work activities. As you arrive at Pandora's chamber, several of the guards seem surprised that you'd actually show up here when you're not actually at work. You laugh it off, of course. This is about the only recreation you get here, after all.

A few badge swipes and whooshing of large doors opening later and you are once again in the sterile white of Pandora's room. You are greeted by the sight of Pandora watching some kind of children's program with people, puppets and either people or droids in large foam monster suits dancing together and singing about what seems to be numbers. She's even dancing along with them, carefully watching each movement and mimicking it precisely until a spin causes her to notice you. She almost falls over as she runs over to embrace you happily.
"You're late!" She scolds, a mild look of displeasure on her face.
"Sorry," you explain "today is supposed to be your off day, you know. No lessons or anything, just having fun and doing whatever you want. You get to relax today!"
She frowns a bit in thought, then looks you in the eye. "But I don't want to do that without you."

I dunno. It seems a touch presumptuous to make assumptions about weather or not Bad Man AI is male or female, you know despite Pandora calling it a "man". its our only frame of reference for it but it might have an entirely different (or none what-so-ever) opinion on the matter.

You decide a board game might be a good way to spend time together and challenge her a little. You check through the closet to see what you have. You notice a few good ones, but also some sadistic dick decided to put Monopoly and Settlers of Catan. You have flashbacks to nearly getting into a fist fight over sheep back in college and decide to skip over them. Scrabble might be a little unfair considering you're an MIT graduate with numerous doctorates and she's an Android girl who watches TV shows with puppets singing the alphabet. However, there is one that seems nice and simple; chutes and ladders. It's only really got like three rules, though it's pretty much only luck. Still, could be fun. You bring along checkers just in case.

A short explanation of how it works and Pandora seems to get the idea. Super simple game. You set up the board and get ready to roll.
Roll 1d100 to slide down and climb up to the best of your ability. Best of 3.

The dice gods seem to be pleased by your actions and you actually roll pretty well. Pandora wonders why these little people wouldn't just move around the sheets that make them slide down, but accepts that it's simply a game and logic doesn't always apply to it. In the end you win, teaching Pandora the time-honored tradition of the handshake, explaining it's sort of like a hug, but smaller. She doesn't know why you'd bother, when hugs are clearly better. You can't argue with that logic.

Oh and a bit of info on these short, seemingly insubstantial posts, I figure it couldn't hurt to explain a little of the process. See, every interaction with Pandora you have affects her "stats" as far as her personality goes, so I will increase or decrease numbers in her personality and disposition each time depending on the outcome. So even small things like playing a little game or just spending time with her helps her grow and forms her personality. Obviously I can't tell you what they are, but just a little behind-the-scenes heads up that everything matters.

No duh. But i do sort of want to gauge her response at some point. Maybe asking in oblique terms about the bad man, or what she'd feel about making friends. or something.

Failing that i would like to introduce her to more robots in pop culture. Give her a sense on what makes a "Good Bot" vs a "Bad Bot".

You think a simple card game might be a good idea. Nothing too complex, maybe go fish or something. It'd be a good time to discuss how she's doing and ask her a few questions too. You mull over what to talk about while looking through the closet at what you have to go with. For some reason some weird card game called "Magic" is in there, but you don't really understand any of it and it doesn't seem to have instructions. Probably too complex for Pandora. Uno is fun, but better with more people. A simple deck of playing cards will suffice.

You deal the cards out, explaining the game to her as you do and trying to keep things as simple as you can in case it gets a little too abstract for her. Once you finish explaining, she asks if she needs a fish to play.
Roll 1d100 to play and see what you can learn from your questioning. Best of 3.

The game doesn't exactly go your way. Despite only just now learning the game, her inhumanly fast learning is still as impressive as ever and she takes you down almost all but one game you play. Maybe it's because she's working with numbers and probability? Either way, you feel a little ashamed of losing at go fish to someone who literally didn't know it existed until just now.

You question her on a few relevant topics, however, which gives you some new insight at least.
"Pandora," you ask "are you excited about getting your new body tomorrow?"
"Yeah!" she exclaims with a smile, her eyes not leaving her hand "I'm gonna be taller and less break-y! It'll be fun! That means I'll be able to do more stuff without getting hurt!" You think some expanded vocabulary lessons might be in order in the future.
"And with that in mind..." you try to word this carefully due the cameras "How would you feel about having a new friend? Someone to talk to and maybe play with? I suppose you could say you'd be their sister in a way."
Pandora gasps and looks up from her cards. "Did you and Babsy make a baby?!" Palm meet face.
"No..." you sigh, shaking it off "no, we didn't make a baby. I mean another android like you. One that's...not quite the same, but still similar, do you understand?" Pandora looks a little confused for a moment.
"So..." she says, examining herself "like...not a human person? Another AI? ...Um, would they stay here in my room with me?"
"No, no," you shake your head "they would have their own room, but that doesn't mean you couldn't see them sometimes and do some stuff together. Maybe even help teach them a little bit, since you'd be older and have learned more."
"Oh..." she says, a hint of disappointment in her voice "um...yeah, I would like that I think. That could be nice..."

You decide to change the subject, she seems a little sad she won't have a roommate. "What about being alone earlier? Were you okay with it? Did you learn anything new?"

"It was okay, I guess." She says somewhat dismissively, shrugging. "I watched that show with the monster people, but they weren't scary. They said stuff about numbers and letters and dancing. I liked the dancing, that was kinda fun. But I like it better when you're here."
Huh. It seems like Pandora is...lonely. It makes sense, now that you think of it. Since she was "born" she's almost always had someone there with her when she was awake, save for the short while between her waking up and you arriving for her lessons. You wonder if there's a way to fix this. Have something there to keep her company? Perhaps a companion droid of some sort? You doubt the general would let you bring in a pet for her, but you never know.

Initially R&D just did hardware. You tell them "make this" and they make it. But the actual programming of Pandora's AI and software was you and your team. The official tasks for your team are delegated to assisting you, but now that you're working with Pandora's development, they have been delegated to other tasks by your superiors. Stuff they don't deem important enough to warrant your attention, such as being a glorified IT department for the Facility or programming new systems for less-important projects. The government is making sure their skills aren't going to waste.
You also have them fill out paperwork you don't really feel like doing because you're the boss.

While she is a machine, she doesn't have "unnecessarily dangerous strength" like you see all too often in the sci-fi world. She's actually a little weaker than your average person. >>
>>43270022

You think you might have a solution to Pandora's loneliness in the form of a droid dog of some kind. You'll have to clear it with the general first, but what's the harm in a small pet that she doesn't need to worry about hurting accidentally? You send a message to Richards asking if he has a moment to talk. A few minutes later you get a reply.

Gen. Richards: Come to my office. You have 10 minutes.

Makes sense, running a top secret government lab can't be a a simple task. You ask Pandora if she'll be okay by herself for a few minutes. She doesn't seem to pleased about it, but reluctantly nods. You give her a hug and promise to be back as soon as you can, hurrying off to meet the general.

As you arrive at the office, the door swings open before your knuckles make contact to knock.
"Come in, doctor, I don't have all day." he says shortly, a small mountain of paperwork sitting in front of him.
"Err, yes, thank you, sir." you stammer out, taking a seat. "So, ah, recently it's come to my attention that Pandora...er, TBX-042 has expressed a want for a companion. When she...it is alone, it seems to feel lethargic, the same way a human feels without social interaction, but much sooner. This loneliness could make teaching a little more difficult. So, what I'd like to propose is a pet of sorts. A droid dog, actually. They're relatively simple to care for and the companionship would be very beneficial on days when lessons aren't scheduled. Do you think that would be a possibility?"

Don't count your chickens before they're hatched. Nat1's are still a thing.

General Richards leans back in his chair, folding his hands together as he stares you down. You shift nervously, but don't break eye contact. You feel like if you did, you'd somehow lose something. After a few silent moments he sniffs and clears his throat.
"If I agree to this," he begins "I want you to reconsider agent Arikawa's proposition the other day. A Facility of this size and importance doesn't run on hopes and dreams. We require results. And unfortunately for you, a robot that likes to pet dogs does not count as a result. America runs on it's military, son. We pride ourselves on being the most dangerous sons of bitches on the planet, because if we aren't, a lot of people would be up shit creek without a paddle, do you understand?"
"Yes, sir." you answer quickly, nodding.
"Good." Richards leans forward again "I'm going to give you this one for now, you can have your robot dog or whatever, but you remember what I said. We can't put it off forever and if we need to outsource it elsewhere or bring in someone else to work on it, we will. Now, if we're done, I have paperwork coming out of my ass. Dismissed."

I'm going to call it here, as it's getting about time all good QMs get some sleep, but thank all of you for playing! If you like the quest, please vote for it on the archive and follow my Twitter! I can stick around for a bit to answer questions if needed.

Oh and FYI, Babsy has long hair and her secondary arms are more humanoid. Basically the same as Pandora's, attached just below her real ones.
