Circles traced on the ground, runes carved in a language you barely understand, gibberish sentences inscribed around the edges and inside and a pattern which carries some unknown strength. You checks the instructions in the small leather backed book in your palm and follow the rest of the instructions. Walk thrice around the circle clockwise, then four times withershins..? What on earth does that mean? You check the instructions again, and see the someone has scribbled beside it “Anticlockwise”. You nod and make an noise of understanding as you carry through the next step. You drip a single drop of your blood onto the centre of the circle and speak the inscribed incantation.

“Bound by me to this world, I call forth my…”

You almost trip over the spell and ruin the entire incantation. Despite having been told what to say, the way it was written in your book almost confuses you.

“Sp’r’t to guide and protect me. I bring thee forth.”

As soon as the last word ends, the circle glows and a shapeless being starts to rise from the crimson glow. It whispers three words into your mind.

“Who… Are… You?”

>I am Alistair Calibyrn, member of the Calibyrn clan. (Begin with Acquisition fully unlocked, start with a negative point in magic, and Ascension and Actualisation are locked)

>I am Jeremiah Calver, member of the Fallen. (Start with bonus to Ascension and penalty to Acquisition and Actualisation growth)

>I am Alice Cromwell, member of the Order. (Start with bonus to Actualisation and penalty to Acquisition and Ascension growth)

>I am Katherine Williams and I uh… Am Katherine Williams. (Start with bonus to Health and Stamina, and high potential for growth)

Stats:

Health: Base amount is 3 dots. This is how many heavy hits you can take before you are incapacitated or die.

Stamina: Base amount is 3 dots. This is how good you are with anti-Sp’r’t martial arts, and how many strenuous physical acts you can do.

Acquisition: Base amount is 1 dot. This is turning your Sp’r’t into a weapon. This consumes a small amount of magical energy to create, but is the weakest kind of Sp’r’tual manifestation. Useful for users with little magic or users of anti-Sp’r’t martial arts.

Ascension: Base amount is 1 dot. This is merging with your Sp’r’t to gain its powers. Medium magical energy drain and and medium with regards of power. Useful for allrounders.

Actualisation: Base amount is 1 dot. This is summoning your Sp’r’t into a “physical” form, allowing it to fight other Sp’r’t summoners by itself. This has the highest mana cost and the highest strength as none of it is diluted by your mortal soul.

Magic: Base amount is 1 dot. This is the measure of your magical energy.

Yeah, you are Katherine. Katherine Williams. A normal girl, currently in the basement of your uncle’s mansion, with the book you got in his will, and you just summoned a Sp’r’t, these odd things that are a representation of you… But they can fight. And there’s orders of people who summon these guys. And it all seemed cool, but kinda… fake. Not one to be deterred by the things seeming fake you attempted it and it actually worked. Now in front of you is a slowly forming Sp’r’t. As the crimson light of the summoning circle begins to fade and the body begins to become more substantial, you still can’t make out its body but it is there and it is still talking to you. It reaches an ethereal… Arm? It’s probably an arm. It reaches an Ethereal arm towards you as its voice whispers in your mind. You back up, almost tripping over some of the tarp covered boxes that litter the basement of this old, grand house.

“I am your Sp’r’t… I am a…”

>Warrior, a Sp’r’t based around attacking at close range and boosting its own power.

>Defender, a Sp’r’t based around defending its summoner and boosting its summoner and allies.

The ethereal arm pulls back into the mass of… Stuff that sits in the centre, which starts to glow brightly, and when it fades, a woman with a wooden wand in her hand and a long, forest green dress stands in place of the Sp’r’t goop. She wears a crown woven from what seems to be wood atop her head, her pointed ears probably her most notable feature along with the black tattoo under each eye. She floats over to your side and looks her summoner in the eyes. She curtsies to you and introduces herself, her voice airy and regal.

“I am Adere. I am your Sp’r’t of the Defender class. I must inquire, which of the Sp’r’t orders do you belong to?”

You stare at the odd woman for a number of seconds before managing to pull together a response, stuffing your shock and awe into a small crate in the back of your mind, which you are certain will soon be opened again. You shake your head and attempt a confident smile at the woman in front of you.

“Uh… None.”

The woman looks a little surprised. But she recollects herself and smiles calmly.

“Then you must be of a Sorcery family, no?”

Once again you shake your head and smile.

“No, no. The Williams are normal…”

The woman’s smile falters. She sighs heavily and starts to pace around her summoning circle.

“Lovely… I am dealing with a nobody… Does that book in your hand have any instructions on how to proceed after the summoning?”

You hurriedly open the book and flick through it. You have greeted your Sp’r’t and she’s asked the mandatory questions… Now comes picking a first bit of practice apparently.

“You look up at her. We’re supposed to practice a discipline together.”

She nods curtly and walks back over to you, tapping her foot impatiently.

“Okay then, what shall it be?”

Calling early due to lack of posts.

You open the small book to the chapter on Anti-Sp’r’t martial arts. It says that the art is achieved by channelling the smallest amount of magical energy into your fists, and later on a weapon, and using it to disrupt the flow of magical energy between a Sp’r’t and their summoner. Your current teaching will be a bit basic due to the lack of an actual person to teach you, but your Sp’r’t claims to know a little of the art.

You spend the next hour or so practicing firstly channelling the magical energy into your fists, then the first three basic moves. The first is a simple magically charged punched, the second a palm strike meant to stun or stagger, and the third is where you release the energy just a moment before you punch. The third takes the longest for you to achieve, but you have always been a fast learner. Once you have learnt the three, which the book describes at the basic moves, you realise just how much energy this entire thing has taken out of you. You start to head upstairs before your Sp’r’t coughs and frowns at you.

“Where are you going?” She asks, sounding a little annoyed, “Are we not going to continue with our martial arts training?”

You sighs and continue walking upstairs, your Sp’r’t following behind you.

“I need to rest, this took a lot out of me.”

Your Sp’r’t scowls a little, biting back a retort as she keeps following you.

When you make your way upstairs, you look around the empty house and decide your next course of action.

What do you do now?

>Grab some food from the kitchen, there’s a little food left. (Recover one stamina)

>Go take a quick nap. (Recover one magic)

You heads over to the door and open it, looking out at whoever is outside. In front of you is a balding man with a small beard, he’s not much taller than you but he looks like he could hurt you if he wanted to. You get a pretty ominous feeling from him. He smiles at you and puts a hand on the doorframe.

“Hello there. Is the man of the house home?”

You put a hand on your hip and raise an eyebrow at him.

“I’m the man of the house. What do you want?”

He frowns a little, but quickly regains his composure.

“Well, I was just coming to check out the house. It’s been vacant for the last couple days, owner died or something. Suddenly, late at night the lights are on. It’s a little suspicious. Mind if I come in and make sure everything’s okay?”

You start to close over the door shaking you head at him.

“No, no. It’s fine. Goodbye.”

He sticks his foot in the door and his smile fades. He puts a hand against the door and starts to push against it.

“Just let me in kid!”

His sudden yelling worries you, and you attempt to slam the door, but the man barges through pushing you back and away from the door. He holds his hand out to the side and closes his hand around a knife which forms in his hand. The blade is curved and rusted, with a serrated edge on the inside. It’s a cruel blade for sure. Adere’s eyes widen in fear and she yells at you.

“He’s a summoner too!”

You back up and channel magic into your fists, allowing you to use martial arts if need be. You look around the sitting room, trying to find something you can use.

>Throw the jar from the nearby table at him. (d20)

You grab the porcelain jar from the table next to you and toss it at him. As the jar leaves your hand, you impart some of your Sp’r’t disrupting magic into it. The jars connects with the man’s head, sending him stumbling backwards into the door, his knife dropping out of his hand. He cracks his head against the door and slumps against it, cuts leaking drips of blood from his forehead. You quickly close the door and look around, panicked and confused. Just what the hell have you gotten yourself into…

>Ending here tonight.

>Thanks for joining in.

>I’ll be here to answer questions, concerns and suggestions for the next while.
