You groan and try in vain to shift the weight sitting atop you. It’s way too late, late enough that it could be called early without much trouble. You’ve just gotten back from what turned out to be an unnecessary mission to rescue Hiss and Liss but your work is far from over. Old Bart is apparently out there and his magical constructs have already struck once. You can’t waste time sleeping now, no matter how tired you feel. You have to be getting ready, preparing to fight a wizard who doesn’t know when to die.

There’s just one thing obstructing you. Hiss has just fallen asleep more or less on top of you so it’s going to be hard to do anything. You feel like she hasn’t been entirely honest with you about what happened or why else would she need the Serpentbane? But now you can’t ask because she’s both asleep and incomprehensible even if she woke.
You’re going to have to move her. But waking her up could be a bad idea, she likes to get bitey sometimes.

>Try to put her to bed

You feel a little awkward but you start at the head and make your way down, Hiss first yawning and then squirming with pleasure. She doesn't seem to wake up all the way but she starts to latch around you.
You do your best to ease yourself upwards while keeping hold of her, allowing you to stagger forward and place her on the bed.

She moans and so you keep it up for a little while longer. You have to admit to feeling pretty frustrated yourself in that area. She'd teased you an awful lot before just falling asleep. Now there's not much you can do about it. You button her tunic back up before backing off and letting her rest.

But that's enough of that, you need to distract yourself with other things. Maybe find some cold water but you have a bad feeling that that'll be in ample supply very soon.

You'd like to get an early start on brewing but there's a few other things bugging you first. You can brew later. Right now you need to make sure other people are doing their part.
Rock is still floating about near the ceiling, pointedly ignoring you and Hiss together. You get the impression that she still thinks your relationship is a bad idea but if they do, the spirit doesn't mention it anymore.

"Hey Rock, can I ask you something?"

-Certainly. What is it?-

"Do you think you could fight a wizard if you had to? On your own?"

-No.-

You blink. That hadn't quite been the answer you were hoping for.
"But you can take their constructs and stuff!"

-Cennen, constructs are a childish toy for wizards. They are used for preying on non-wizards and non-spirits, they won't be used against me in a direct battle. And even that can come down to a direct contest of magical strength if he is present and that is a struggle I cannot win-

"Would you have more strength if you were still a mountain?"

-Naturally. But it would still not be enough. The shadow-man had enough innate strength to place him above the majority of all spirits. Unless this wizard is weaker than him in that regard?-

You think back to your first encounter with Old Bart, the man who'd first stopped a river and then had rode it into the sky.
"I think he's a lot stronger. But shouldn't he be weakened? He's just a staff...or something."

-I do not know enough of his circumstances to know for sure but that does not feel like a safe assumption. It would be for the best to assume the worst.-

You get it. You don't like it but you get it.
"Well I won't ask you to fight him but can you try to track him down? Through magic or whatever? I don't really know how it works."

-This is possible. I will return soon.-
Rock dissolves into a stream of sand that flows through the crack between window and windowsill.

>>
>>43285271
Right. Now if this really is wizard business, you happen to have an expert on hand.

You find Eugene in the corridor outside, examining the broken window. He's weaving a chain of dandelions all strung together, petals scattering beneath his fingers. The window is already wreathed in several other flower chains, reminding you of nothing less than some strange sort of memorial. But to what?

"Eugene! What's good?"

"Hi Cennen," he mumbles, sounding quite distracted. "How goes the brewing?"

"Haven't started yet. So uh, what are you doing?"

"What does it look like?," Eugene snaps, a suddenly angered tone to his voice. A moment later however and he's back to the same dope as always.
"Another wizard broke into my sanctum. I'm erecting a scryguard so that he won't be able to detect us while we're in here."

See if he has any ideas for a potion that might boost his abilities. Magesight? Magic booster? We have skills, but we need to know what HE needs and how it works.
>>
>>43285590
Actually since we're still technically a plant he could use his magic to give us some buffs or something I bet
>>
You scratch your head, thinking over what he just said.
"But he already knows we're here."

"Pardon?"

"I mean, he knows where we are. He just broke in a few hours ago"

"Oh."
Eugene seems to visibly deflate right before your very eyes.
"I don't know why I didn't think of that. But still! Now he can't look further!"
He drops his flower chain in disgust.

"It can't hurt at least. So how does all of this work exactly? I didn't think protecting against scrying was a dandelion-related magic."

Eugene contrives to look offended.
"As much as I loathe to go against theme, I can do non-dandelion magic you know. This is just a Sight gimmick. It's like alchemy, not proper magic. It's not restricted to my Domain."

"So why use flower wreaths?"

"Well uh there needs to be a physical medium and I'm the Dandelion Wizard you know? It still has to be flavored. I'd bet you anything that this other wizard is using his own element to scry us as well."

"Water."

"Eh?"

"We've met him before. He's a Water Wizard. Name's Old Bart."

Eugene groans.
"SOMEONE was quick on the draw, I see."

"What do you mean?"

"He's got a prime element. That arsehole. I mean, not that I'm unhappy with dandelions but..."
You wonder how much Domain-based jealousy drives wizard interaction.
"There's only so much magic to go around," Eugene grumps. "And it sounds like he got the good part. Scrying is easy for him then, he probably only has to use a pool of still water. Have you ever tried to see the future in a flower? It's hard."

"You sound jealous."

"I'm not. And it's more than that."
He declines to speak further on the matter.

"Uhuh. Well I might need your help soon to deal with him, alright?

"Absolutely."

"Where's your staff? You might need that."

He pats his walking stick affectionately.
"Staffs are so traditional. Blazing new styles with my reservoirs."

>>
>>43286097
Too bad we can't use the plant grow on his staff to increase or multiply his reservoirs. Or soul mend? We don't know enough about magic
>>
>>43286097
You peer at the stick. You suppose it's a little more incognito than the usual get-up but you don't think being unnoticed was ever Eugene's intention.
"Looks a little like Liss' one."

"You think so? I won't lie, I actually chose this to show solidarity with her, her sister is such a sweet girl. And a very good maid. My room's never been cleaner."

As you recall, Eugene lives in the basement here and was never prone to personal tidiness so appreciating a maid makes sense. You're more surprised that Aina is still in one piece after cleaning up his trash.
"That's nice. What does she think of it?"

"You know what? I don't think either of them have noticed."
He actually looks a little forlorn. You try not to chuckle.

"How's your mum? I haven't seen her about yet."

He flicks a hand dismissively.
"She's doing fine. I don't like to talk to her much."

You think you remember that.
"Why not?"

"It's complicated. And awkward. She stays out of the basement and that's good by me."

You figure you should probably change the subject to something less awkward. You're still not sure what's between Eugene and Lady Trebain but it's probably not any of your business. At least, not right now.
"How's your brewing been going mate? I wasn't able to give you that much instruction."

Eugene's face lights up and he turns away from the window.
"Fantastic! I must admit, I keep making mistakes. There is a certain discipline to this alchemy business, isn't there? Half the time it seems like I end up making something I don't intend."

Oh that's just what you need. More of his rejects. He grabs you by the hand and pulls you forward.

As you rejoin Eugene on the steps, he leads you down to the ground floor and then around the hall to the basement. As he does so, you think it's time to tell him what he had accidentally inflicted upon you.
Or well, what Hiss had inflicted upon you. But it had been his invention.
"Hey, can you uh, sense plants? Dandelions?"

Eugene stops, looking puzzled.
"I can and I can do more than that. But why?"

"So how do I feel?"

He narrows his eyes at you and then after a moment, they widen again.
"Wait that's coming from you?"

"You couldn't tell?"

"No, I have a lot of dandelions around!"
He shakes his sleeves for emphasis, several dozen flowers spilling out of them.
"There's a certain amount of dandelion background radiation occurring here. What happened to you?"

You give him a brief recounting of what his own potion did to you, something he'd apparently never noticed the first time.
"I'm a plant now. And it works with other magic like my tree-growing brews."

"So that's why you grew taller right before the ball."

You'd really rather Eugene not knowing about Hiss' true nature. The less people who know about snakes the better. Not just for secrecy but because you know Hiss could get really pissy if you gave away her secrets for no reason. She'd certainly never do it herself.
Which means it's time to change the subject once more.

"Check out this new potion I made while I was away!"
You pull the bottle of Treekin out of your bag, a potion that you have never used since first inventing it.
"It doesn't change anything about you but it makes you essentially count as being a plant for magical stuff."

Eugene doesn't notice your sudden change in topic, his eyes fixed on the bottle in your hand.
"So anyone who drinks this? What sort of plant?"

"A plant."
You don't actually know. Does it have a specific type? You'd never had to think too much about it but now that you consider it, his magic would only work on dandelions specifically. You know his reject potions likely made you into a dandelion but would this?
"To be honest? I have no clue, never really used this."

Eugene strokes his ill-advised beard.

"...Sometimes. A lot of alchemists do."
You neglect to mention the number of alchemists who your old Master had told you die from poison or acid ingestion every year.
"I can undo it if needs be, don't worry about it."

The two of you enter the basement together and you note that the place is indeed much tidier than before. Aina must take her job seriously. You can't help but feel your eyes drawn to a shelf filled with a variety of glowing yellow rejects.
Eugene downs the potion, grimacing at the taste.

You shrug.
"Just a cast some magic on yourself man. I don't know, this is your field."

Eugene starts to sweat.
"But what if I mess it up?"

"CAN you mess it up?"

"I don't know but I'm not sure if I want to find out."

"Oh man up. Sometimes you just have to take stupid risks for no real reason."

Eugene groans and then waves his stick in a figure of eight along the ground. A strange glow settles around him for a moment before fading.
"It worked!"

"What did you do?"

"Just a minor Invigoration, nothing special. But do you know what this means? You can turn anyone into plants! You have to teach me how to make this potion."

It only lasts a day. I think yours are permanent. Didn't you learn the identification brew?

FUCK NO, it also uses snake blood, tell him we made it with some rare quedeshi plant.

Tell him if he modifies the reject brew he gaveus he can do it better himself. Issue it as a challenge/learning experience. Our brewing methhods don't work the same for him.

I ran out of materials also only last a day.

This. We could also give him the treebrew recipe at least.

You shake your head.
"Can't, sorry."
In truth, you just don't want to. You don't trust him with this power and you sure don't trust him knowing about snake reagents.
"It uses a very rare ingredient and I don't have anymore right now. It's from overseas."

Eugene looks downcast so you decide to cheer him up a little.
"But don't worry, I'm sure you can figure out a replacement with your reject brews. Consider it a challenge!"

"I guess so," he says glumly, all previous enthusiasm gone. While he's distracted, you start to dig around in your pack for a Soulsight. It's time to finally get some insight into just what a wizard is!
Only you used your Soulsight before and you still haven't replaced it. You're going to have to brew another one. And to do that, you're going to need some fresh blood.

We can't really explain the shapeshifting brew. Maybe we could use bunyip to show off the strength granted by a potence brew though.

You set your lab up, shaking each piece of glassware to restore it to its normal size while Eugene mulls over his reject shelf. You don't know how long you have left, it's time to get brewing.

Brew a dispell and do some experiments with it, like a gas-based anti magic effect or something

4 antimagic and 4 dispel brews. We've already got one of each and I want everyone in the party including Eugene to have one of each too

make dispels.
>>
>>43291061
I like this idea, but maybe Eugene could work on it while we make more antimagic and dispel brews?
>>
>>43291143
It would have to turn it into oxygen and glucose quickly too otherwise Bart could probably still control the water while it was in the plant
>>
>>43291143
We should totally collaborate with eugene to make it after we make our other brews. Make it a root-shield type thing. Eugene might actually be able to do this without brews, just using his wizard magic.
>>
>>43290985
>> Experiment with Journey Brew
might come in useful, lets not forget we have to make a good faith effort with this.
>>
>Antimagic and Dispels!

Considering that you're up against a wizard, the choice seems obvious. You brew up four Dispel Elixirs and follow them up with four Antimagic Potions.

Meanwhile Eugene has taken to pacing, waving his stick about in a rather dangerous manner.
"Water...water...I think I can help with that?"

"Oh?"

"Dandelions drink water. I can work with that, I think. I just need to get some practice in."
He starts bouncing a flower between his fingers.

"Like a giant flower golem or something?"

"Not really, no. I can't control it directly."

"Why not?"

"Anything you can control directly is too complex. If you're not with it, another wizard can subvert it. And even when you are, they could just cut its strings instead. It has to be autonomous."

The door creaks open as the two of you talk, prompting you to look around.

It's...

You're just bottling your last Antimagic potion when Liss steps in, huffing for breath. Going down those stairs must have been hard for her. Eugene glances up at her for just a moment.
"Please leave Aina, it's too busy to clean right now."

Liss just gives a tired sigh, her walking stick clutched in one hand.

"Hey there Liss, you alright?"
She certainly doesn't look alright. Not that you're surprised, she was just kidnapped not that long ago. She should be sleeping.

"Do I look alright?," she says, echoing your own thoughts.

"Maybe you should get some sleep then before the sun rises. You look awful. Er, no offense."

"Thanks Cennen."

"Are you out of heal-alls? You should have sent someone else, you don't have to come all the way down here."

"No. No, it's not that. I think there's something I need to tell you. Or ask you? It's about Hiss."

You get a sinking feeling in your stomach the moment she mentions Hiss. Damn it. And here you'd thought they'd actually been getting on well!
"Feel free to tell me all about it, I'll see what I can do."

Liss glances at Eugene.
"Can we do it somewhere else?"

It's apparently a sensitive matter too? Something doesn't add up. You briefly consider asking Eugene to leave before deciding that would be too rude.
"Here, I'll help you up the stairs."

You take her hand and lead her on, trying to help her back up. She flinches away from your touch for just a moment before accepting.

"So," you say once you're away from the wizard. "What's going on?"

Liss is clearly uncomfortable to say anything at all but over a small amount of time she tells you about how she had caught Hiss in her true form and had used some wishes. About how she had told her everything. Oh shit. So that's why she needed the Serpentbane.
"...and I was thinking, you've been in that situation a lot. What did you use your wishes for? How did you use them?"
She's still holding something back, there's an aspect to this story you still don't know.

You're not sure what to do, part of you is still reeling. Did Hiss really tell her everything? Fuck that's...dangerous. Shouldn't she have eaten this out of her head? As cruel as it sounds, that might be the best. Liss has had a hard enough time as it is without being wrapped up in your adventures further.

> "I only used my wishes responsibly and for what she wanted."

It was mostly during life threatening situations or for something that helped her in the end. It kinda feels wrong to take their free will away and use a wish for selfish reasons.
