Your people have followed the herds since time immemorial. Since the time of your grandfather's grandfather, the land, the beasts, fish and birds have kept your people fed and healthy. With the knowledge of flint and of fire, you set yourselves apart from the animals. You are more. You are human. You think, you laugh, you plan and hunt, more deadly than any wolf pack. You are strong of limb and cunning of mind. You speak and learn and remember. So it has always been, since the time of your grandfather's grandfather.

You are of the tribe, of the family. Over generations, you have met other small bands and you have fought, you have bartered and you have loved. There have been lean times and times of glut, where the tribe has been thin and fat. There are many of you now, more than ever before. It is a good time.

When you last laid your head down to rest, where was it?
>In a cave high among the craggy slopes of the mountains
>Beneath a dusty overhang in sparse and dry scrubland
>Under a bivouac in the deep forests
>Beside a gurgling stream that feeds the river in this valley
>Next to the warm glow of the campfire, with the infinite stars of the steppe overhead
>Sheltering from the rain under the broad leaves of the jungle trees

I did forget about that one. We'll add that to the list.

Incidentally, I wonder how many people remember my last disaster attempting a stone-age civ quest? Hopefully this will go better, as I've decided to narrow the focus to a single person and his lineage.

River valleys are always a good place to start a civilization.

This valley is lush and tranquil, especially compared to the hard-scrabble landscape around. In the winter, snow rolls in from the north and freezes water and careless tribesman alike, while in the summer, you swelter under a relentless sun. Nevertheless, this valley has provided for your people for longer than even the oldest of the elders can remember. In summer or winter, the goats and deer of the valley are good to hunt and the sparse forest provides for your people, as do the fish that swim in the great river that leads all the way through to the open land beyond the valley and thence, who knows?

But who guided your people here? Who leads the tribe?
>The hunters lead us. The bravest of the brave and strongest of the strong

Who do you think you're playing as?

The elders hold great wisdom and experience. Under their guidance, the tribe has remained united and strong, held by the bonds of family that tie some sixty of you together. Your size is both a strength and a weakness however, as there's enough of you now that food is becoming more scare. Such a threat would fracture any tribe not held together by the bonds of their elders. They keep the hunters in check and calm the tempers of those that would leave. The most ancient teaching they have for all the clan is that within the clan, there is strength. They may be slow to change or to take chances, but their caution has often been rewarded with prosperity.

You wake as the song of birds fills the air. You are a young man of the tribe, straight of back and strong of heart and limb. The new day greets you, full of possibility. It is early spring and your tribe has just moved upriver, seeking the goats that will have come down from the hills and allowing the deer further towards the mouth of the valley a chance to fatten again after the lean winter. You have little to your name, but your heart is filled with determination to make your mark. Long after you have become an elder and died to feed the earth, the tribe will remember your name and your deeds. You pull yourself from the pile in which your family slept, scratch and make plans for the day.

How will you spend your time?
>Check your belongings. You put them down somewhere around here last night...
>Go looking for an early breakfast. Your belly rumbles for meat, or spring gatherings.
>Visit and listen to the elders wisdom. Even if you are no longer young, they still have seen many more seasons than you.
>A man of the tribe should have a woman. You're grown now, so perhaps it's time to start looking.
>Explore. The well-trod paths of migration are one thing, but there has to be more to the valley than that?
>>
>>43302997
You can check your stats and gear at any time, as well as contemplate the state of the tribe.

Rules will be explained as they become relevant.

Time will usually be measured in seasons, but when important events occur, or to get us started, I'll slow it down to action-by-action.

Let someone know before we leave of course and while exploring look for food along the way, don't go too far out just some scouting

HAH! Okay, you actually made me laugh aloud with that. I'll give a +1 on the next die roll.

My fucking Hexographer has packed up, otherwise I'd have a map for you here... Or something approximating that.

After you've taken a drink from the river and splashed some on your face, you shake out your long, matted hair and look up at the slopes of the valley. One arm reaches out to not too far from where the tribe is camped and you could probably reach it in a day and maybe be back in another. Behind where you squat on the banks of the stream, the tribe slowly starts to waken and so you go and kick brother Paku awake.

He's grumpy and sleepily grabs your foot with a snarl, rolling and pulling you into the dirt. The pair of you shout and tussle, much to the delight of the tribe's young and the few who don't mind being woken up by your play-fighting. Finally, Paku gives up as you plant your foot in his face and hold him at leg-length while he swings his arms ineffectually at you and laughs.
"Brother Paku, I'm going up to the hills today."
"So why do you have to wake me up?! Go and get stepped on by a bear, see if I care!" He grabs your foot and pushes it off his face, standing and offering you his hand. Taking it, you heave yourself up and give him a thump on the shoulder for his rudeness.
"I'm telling you so no-one thinks I've gone and been taken by moon-madness and gone who knows where. At least you know where to find me."
"Why are you even going up there anyway?"
You shrug. You don't know why, exactly. "Maybe... To see what's there?"
>>
>>43303898
You breakfast sparsely. The fish in this little stream aren't much of a meal and the sooner you have good goat to feast on, the better. You check your equipment before heading out, like any sensible hunter. Your deer-hide loincloth and goatskin jacket; a stone knife in a hide sheath and a stone-headed spear should be all you need today. You leave your quiver and javelins behind - you're not planning on hunting anything that needs them today. Just as you're about to leave however, brother Elia jogs up to you, a spear in his hand and a bag on his back. "Brother Paku says you're going up the hills?"
"Yes? What of it?"
"Do you want any company?"
"I might. Why the sack?"
Elia shifts uncomfortably. "There might be something good. Something worth bringing back. Maybe a bird if we are lucky."
Chances are, Elia's not interested in birds. At 26 winters, he's older than you, but the tribe knows he's a bad hunter. He can move quietly, but his spear-arm is weak. And he has his eye on pretty Galit. He plies her with gifts of pretty things and good meat, in the hopes she'll turn her leaf-green eyes his way. He's getting near to too old to be looked at though and his gifts are becoming more extravagant and more dangerous to come by, to make up for it.

He could be a liability, or he could be good and useful company.
>Take him with you
>Tell him to stay behind
>Treat him as your true companion! Elia's always fun to have around!
>Elia's a weakling and having him with you will only make others think you weak. Send him away with a foot to the arse!
>>
>>43303540
I can't even remember to keep my NAME up, much less my trip...

But really, this is one relatively inoffensive quest. Who's going to bother trolling around as me and mis-archiving it? What purpose does that even serve?

"Why not? Just keep up. It might be hard going."
Elia smiles and nods. "I will. What do you expect to find up there?"
"I have no idea," you honestly reply. "Maybe just birds and rocks. Maybe something good. We'll never know just wearing a track up and down the valley."
"At the very least, we might bring back eggs," shrugs Elia. "I've never had hawk eggs before. Oh! Maybe I might make Galit a gift of hawk-feathers!"
Inspired by the idea, the pair of you set out. The path away from the camp is un-tamed and you are perhaps the first humans to tread it. Long grasses brush at your shins and occasionally you stop to curse and pluck at a tick that thinks you a juicy, blood-filled meal. As you get higher however, the grass thins out and turns to sparse shrubs and scrubland and warty, gnarled trees that eke out their hardy existence away from the waters of the lower valley. Just after the sun's highest point, Elia hurls a stone and smashes the head of a pheasant as it looks for food among the stones. There's no sign of its nest though, so it goes into the bag for later. Lighting a fire out here would take far too much time and so you're resigned to going hungry.

"We're lucky our grandfather's grandfather found this place," Elia remarks, as you start your winding trek up the side of the valley's arm. "It's a good place with much to eat."
"Mmmh. I do wonder though, if it can keep so many of us," you remark. "There's only so many of us that the herds can feed."
"There's the plants too. And the fish."
"True enough."
You don't reach the crown of the hill until the light is beginning to fade, but the view is still spectacular. The silver band of the river is dyed red by the setting sun and the shadows of the mountains stretch over the ground like long fingers. You can see the smoke from the tribe's fires and the dots of woodland that scatter across the valley.
"It's very pretty," Elia huffs, "But not much else. This was a boring trip."
>>
>>43304987
"Or maybe not..." He looks up and smiles, pointing. "See? An eagle! So late, he can't be far from his nest..." Something else has caught your eye however... The setting sun catches something further up the mountain, something that gleams and shines like a dying star. a shiver runs down your spine as you look. Something about that gleam puts you on edge. What do you do?

>Go with Elia to hunt for the eagle. It'll make a fine prize, as Eagles are fierce and powerful birds
>Start heading back down and looking for a good campsite. That gleaming light puts you ill-at-ease and smells of danger
>That light isn't danger, but perhaps opportunity! Go for a closer look and see what it is that gleams like a star.

DO IT!
>>
"Wait a moment, brother." Your eyes are alight. Here is what you had come searching for; something new, something unexpected. "Do you see that?"
"See what?" Elia follows your gesture as you point with your spear and his eyes widen in surprise. "What IS that?"
"I don't know," you're already starting, hurrying up the scree-strewn slope, "But it looks interesting. Come on! Don't you want to be able to give Galit a fallen star?"

Just the idea is enough to spur Elia into keeping pace with you. As you approach however, you see that it is no fallen star that has drawn your eye and Elia is now looking especially worried, keeping a distance and gripping his spear tightly. "Brother, let's turn back. This was a bad idea. Whatever that is, it cannot be good luck."

Ignoring Elia's cowardice, you heave yourself closer to the flickering, silvery light. Caught in the branches of a stunted tree, a small cluster of silvery leaves blooms with a white light that seems to flicker like a fire's flame. The leaves curl like a crescent moon and seem almost to shrink away from your touch. You've never seen the like of this in your life, nor heard any tales told of it.

What do you do?
>This is clearly special. We should bring some back with us!
>This is clearly bad news and smells of ill-luck. Leave it and hope we haven't done wrong just by getting near...

Why assume this is bad. Look, it glows with the light of the moon which has only ever watched over us in the night, the Elders have to see such a find!

Yeah, I'm back. Not for long though; I've had enough late nights lately. I might keep going once I wake up, but by and large, I intend this to be a Monday/Thursday thread from 5pm eastern to 10/10:30pm.

Still, I hope this thread can go well. I still feel bad about abandoning the Wolfsbane tribe years ago. Maybe I can keep a better track of this one.

>>This is clearly special. We should bring some back with us!
The elders can examine this personally.
>>
>>43305962
This.

Let's guard the thing; it'll probably do something interesting before our friend returns.
>>
"Amazing..." You breathe, reaching out for one of the leaves. It sways away from you slightly, but as you touch its surface, it wraps around your finger lightly. It feels like it's covered in fine, short hairs. The light doesn't seem to emit any kind of heat either.
"Brother, don't do something foolish-!" cautions Elia, just below you. The slope up isn't too steep, but he doesn't seem eager to get closer.

Something about his caution gets through to you. The leaf seems reluctant to let you go as you pull your hand away, like a baby holding onto an adult's finger. You slide back down the slope and discuss what to do with your companion.
"We need to bring this back to the elders. They need to see this."
"But what if it loses its fire in the meantime?" he asks, "That's putting aside the fact that this makes my gut ache with bad luck."
"Hmmmh... What if I keep watch while you take one of the leaves back?"
"I am NOT carrying one of those with me, are you moon-mad?!"
"Fine. I'll go back with one then."
"You think it's any more likely that I'll stay here watching that thing while you head back and leave me all alone? Nothing doing!"

The pair of you continue to argue over what's to be done, but as you do so, the light of the leaves flickers and flares suddenly brighter. Elia glances over and gives a cry, stumbling back and raising his spear. As you turn to look, you see something that clenches a fist around your heart.

From the branches of the bush, two eyes gleam out at you both, watching.
>>
>>43306361
It was close enough that I went with both. Have fun with that!

That'll be it for today's thread though! There'll be another one on Thursday, if I can bully my mind into remembering and if this thread is still up in the morning, I'll update it then.

I do hope you've enjoyed this introductory thread. I'm still trying to work out what sort of style I want to write with, but I hope to have that sorted relatively soon.

If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to ask them and I'll answer them either when I wake up, or on Thursday.

New threads will go up around 5pm eastern, as I run on GMT and this is the closest i can get to something vaguely human for all parties concerned.
