Become The Vampire Quest 1

You look at the gates of your new school, pack in hand, and pause. In some ways it feels like it's all been leading up to this, and in other ways, it's like this is where the story begins. As you walk towards Red Fields Academy, you find yourself thinking back over the last few months.

-

It had all started maybe six months ago. You had moved to a new town with your dad, gone through the usual motions of greeting neighbors you didn't expect to see again when you moved on, and going to a new school where you didn't know anyone, all so your dad could pull his “vampire hunter” schtick. You weren't sure what he was really up to, and had long since given up on trying to work it out. The curiosity had been replaced with a deep resentment at being dragged all over the country for whatever ridiculous purpose he had in mind.

When you were younger you thought maybe he was an arms dealer or something, or an assassin. At the time it had almost seemed cool. It explained the blood, the late nights, the guns. But he always seemed to be scraping by, working odd jobs to cover expenses by day and “hunting vampires” by night. You barely saw him, and when you did he was always too drunk to talk and too tired to do anything with you. He was the only constant in your ever-changing world, and you kind of hated him. Maybe that would be putting too fine a point on it. You hated his guts, or at least, you thought you did.

You settled in and went through the usual new kid hazing, bullies figuring out if you were an easy mark, popular kids sneering at you as they determined your worth. The weeks passed by, you caught up on classwork while your dad did his thing. Business as usual for you.
>>
One night he didn't come home from work. It wasn't that unusual, it had happened before, but it always put you on edge. It always reminded you that somewhere deep down you knew he was working hard to support you, that despite his crazy ideas about the world he cared. It always reminded you that you cared too, underneath it all.

He staggered through the front door two nights later, covered in blood and sobbing quietly. There was a gash on his side, and blood pouring from a wound on his neck. You helped him to the couch and got him his medical kit and a scotch, trying to piece together what had happened from his quiet, broken babbling.

As he patched himself up, grunting with each stitch, he told you about the vampire. He told you about your mother. All the traveling, the moving around the country, was to keep you safe while he cleaned up your mother's messes, keeping you from her and killing off the spawn she created. He had finally found her and got too hasty, and she had nearly killed him. He coughed up a bit of blood, pulling you close and telling you over and over again how sorry he was, how he only wanted to protect you.

You felt him shudder, his embrace getting tighter by the second, before he shoved you away and sprang from the couch. His eyes were bright red, glowing in the dim light. He stared at you, panting softly, his fangs lengthening before your eyes, and he turned and fled into the night. You watched him leave, first confused, then frightened, then devastated. He had been right. You had hated him for lying, and he had been telling the truth all along. And now he was gone.
>>
You packed your bags, grabbed what you could find from the shed and his car, and set off to hunt him down. You felt obligated to, you owed him that much. You spent months reading up on occult lore, following his trail and his footsteps. By the time you caught up with him you knew everything about hunting and killing vampires. You set your trap, and when he walked into it you put him down with tears in your eyes. A textbook hunt from start to finish, may he rest in peace.

As you packed up to leave you heard someone clapping behind you. The woman was familiar somehow, a distant memory or a half-forgotten dream. She walked past you towards where your father's body was slowly rotting away, kneeling down beside him.

“Fitting, isn't it? That our little family reunion happens like this. Still, you wouldn't be my child if you hadn't caused that man pain.”

The woman smiled at you, fangs glinting. You moved on reflex, the instincts you had spent the last few months honing compelling you into action. You fired your crossbow, a straight shot to her heart. She barely even gasped, walking towards you slowly as her chest began to sizzle and wither.

“A truly powerful vampire can make the dead walk again. Did you know that?”

She pulled you close, gazing into your eyes and smiling gently.

“You could bring him back. You could bring me back. Human again. No more hunting, no more drifting. We could be happy.”

Her eyes glowed softly.

“He gave up everything for the pair of us. Do you have what it takes to pay him back, now that I can't?”

She closed her eyes and turned to dust, her final words ringing in your head. You had no way of knowing if the urge to find a way to bring them back to life was a hypnotic trick or your own desire, but as you walked away and headed for home you decided you didn't care. You wanted to become a vampire. The only question was how.
>>
Over the next few days you settled your affairs, set up a funeral for him, and enrolled yourself in school. His savings had been meant for new weapons, keeping the car in one piece and generally maintaining the life you had led with him. You sold the car, offloaded the weapons you couldn't keep anymore to pawn shops, and sold your home. You took the money and invested some of it, set some aside for expenses, and put most of it towards your schooling at the only place worth attending. Red Fields Academy.

It wasn't that the place was a prestigious school, which it was. It also wasn't because you were looking to advance yourself with an education, though that was a definite plus. Red Fields Academy was listed in your father's notes as a dangerous place, located in a city that had been the focal point for several vampire attacks in recent memory, as well as many other unusual happenings. From your own research the school is some sort of training ground, a place for monsters to practice their disguises and powers around ignorant teenage humans who are attending thanks to their parent's wealth as opposed to their intelligence. The perfect place to become a vampire, from what you can tell.

-

You smile to yourself as you head for the front door. Time to get to work.

But before that... who exactly are you?
>>
First things first, gender. You're Oliver or Olivia Spencer, so let's get that out of the way.

Pick two stats to boost:
>Strength – Brute force and raw effort
>Speed – Running, jumping, climbing trees
>Smarts – Mental effort and critical thinking
>Sleuth – Observation and research
>Sneak – Slipping by unnoticed, picking pockets
>Schmooze – Persuasion, lying and other interpersonal skills

Pick a theme. This will give you some starting skills and a stat boost:
Bruiser – You've picked your fair share of fights at school, and now you've been in a vampire hunt as well. You're scrappy, and you like to solve problems with your fists. Boost to Strength.

Drifter – You spent your time on the road exploring, wandering through town on weekends and going where the wind takes you. You're flighty and untethered, and you avoid problems where you can. Boost to Speed.

Outsider – You spent quite a bit of time watching others from outside, observing how people work. You tend to be blunt, and you figure your way out of problems in practical terms. Boost to Smarts.

Thinker – Your lack of a consistent social life led you to turn to books for comfort, and you indulged in your hobby to the detriment of your personal skills. You're pretty shy, and you think things through from start to finish so problems never have a chance to occur. Boost to Sleuth.

Snatcher – You never cared about the rules all that much, especially when you'd be moving on in a few months anyway, so you cut class and stole. You tend to be a bit of a punk, and you try to think outside the box to get around problems. Bonus to Sneak.

Charmer – You had numerous chances to practice making a first impression, and you eventually got comfortable making new friends constantly. You're outgoing and prefer to find ways to get others to solve your problems for you. Bonus to Schmooze.

Lastly, pick two hobbies or interests. Don't feel restricted by the theme you chose.

The Rules:
Same system as Become The Dragon Quest. If you don't know what that is, it's best of three d20 rolls. I name a stat that sums up what you're trying to do, and if I don't name a relevant skill, you try to fill in the blank based on what you're trying to accomplish. “Break open the door” might be Strength based, but if you've been playing baseball after school and there's a lead pipe nearby, you could apply your Baseball skill to the roll. A 20 on the die is a crit threat, and if either of the other two rolls is 20 or higher after mods, it's a critical. A crit fail is when you have two or more 1s. So far this system has worked out well enough. We'll get into combat rules as needed, but in basic terms you have wounds, not HP, and the worse the wounds, the more penalties you accrue while doing other things.

The Vampire Rules:
These are the things your character knows about vampires and how they operate. You don't know how accurate your dad's notebook it, but it's been true so far.
Blood pact – Give a vampire blood while swearing an oath and they will do a task for you, assuming it's one they're alright with doing. In return they can give you three commands. Usually they will sit on these commands until the can make the most return on investment. This is the most common way people become “sentient” vampires rather than feral bloodsuckers enslaved to the vampire.
Sunlight – Sunlight isn't an instant kill for vampires, but more than a few seconds and they'll burst into flames.
Healing – Vampires heal very slowly on their own, recovering much more quickly with access to blood. With enough people around, a vampire can recover to peak condition from the most grievous injuries in a matter of moments.
>>
Feeding – Vampires have no need to feed, they're just the worst kind of addicts. A vampire could go their entire existence without blood and survive, though the hunger might drive them insane.
Slaying – Vampires avoid the sun, but it isn't their only weakness. A stake through the heart will do the trick, and different kinds of vampires have different weaknesses. Some can't stand religious iconography and touching it burns them, some avoid garlic and holy water for the same reason. There's one type of vampire that is weak to attacks from other monsters, and in places where they have no competition they're a true menace.

Other monsters:
While your focus has mainly been on vampires, you know at least a few other monsters are out there. Werewolves, golems, demons and tangible spirits are on that list, but you haven't seen any trace of swamp people or treefolk yet.

Most Important Rule:
Have fun.

You head for the main entrance and adjust your glasses. You don't need them, but your father's notebook mentioned that specially made lenses can keep a vampire from trying to take over your mind with their gaze, and, well... better safe than sorry. The last thing you need is to end up a thrall on your first day.

You're starting a week into the fall semester, and the fact that you're a late transfer is earning you a lot of appraising stares. You don't see anyone who looks like they'd pick a fight with you, but everyone seems to be gauging your worth, either in money or as a resource. You're torn from your thoughts by the sound of someone yelling behind you.

“New kid, look out!”

You turn around just in time to see a volleyball flying towards your head, and you duck under it. It rebounds off the stairs and almost takes your head off on the way past you again, but you manage to sidestep it. You watch it fly high into the air, before being caught by a tall girl with a messy ponytail. Now, you're by no means short, but this girl is taller than you are by close to a foot. She grins at you.

“Nice moves, new kid. That was pretty cool.”

Another girl slips around her, snatching the ball from her.

“Come on, we haven't got all day!”

She runs past you, giving you a brief glance and an expression like you're barely worth noticing, hurrying into the school. The tall girl looks a bit distressed.

“Vanessa! Come back here!”

She jogs into the school, giving you a wave as she heads past you, and leaving you standing there for a moment. You shrug and take it in stride though. As you step through the front door you pull out your acceptance letter. There's an orientation you have to attend, you have to pick your schedule for the semester, and lunch is at 1 PM. It's only 8 AM now, and you've got half an hour to kill before the guidance office is expecting you.

You decide to familiarize yourself with the people around you and the place you're in, wandering through the halls looking for a group you can approach. You quickly work out that most of the students already have their cliques and groups. Your best bet for making friends would be to join an afterschool club or something, or meeting someone in class. Barging into a group would have worked at your other schools, but here you think it might actually hurt your chances a lot. You decide to wait until you have someone to introduce you to other people for the time being, and focus on your exploration.

Your explorations, on the other hand, go much more smoothly. Since no one seems to bother with you, you just wander around. You have a simple map that can get you around the school, but you're not looking at the halls. You're looking at vents, windows that can be opened wide enough to slip outside and janitorial closets, and you're not disappointed. For a place that was built for sneaky people, it's exactly what you hoped it would be. You probably missed a few secret passages, and there are bound to be all sorts of hidden doors and the like, but you've got a decent idea of the mundane routes through the school, at least on the ground floor.

You burn through the rest of your free time with your wandering, and you make your way to the guidance office for your appointment. There's a time and a place for breaking rules, and generally those involve not getting caught. You open the door, give your name to the secretary, and get gently ushered to one of the meeting rooms. A rather jovial man walks in, plump and balding.

“Hello Oliver! I'm Dr. Hudson, like the river, but you can call me Tom. Now, I know that the first day of school can be a rough time, and I'm here to help. First off, is there anything you want to know about the school?”

"I guess my first question is about the rumors. You know, the hauntings and disappearances. Any truth to that?"

Tom nods.

"Yes, absolutely. This place is crawling with ghosts!"

He chuckles a bit.

"No, there's no such thing I'm afraid. Though I'd be careful around the swimming pool at night."

You nod a bit.

"How many students attend here?"

Tom counts on his fingers for a moment.

"Three hundred and sevent -three graduated last year... New students... We have about a thousand enrolled in various capacities. Many are part time students, or only here certain days. We do our best to accommodate all of our students."

Tom's smile is starting to make you a little uncomfortable, and you move on.

"What clubs are there at this school?"

Tom blinks.

"Almost as many as there are students, frankly. There's something for everyone here. Every sort of sport, game, activity... There's even an occult club if you're interested in the hauntings."

You smile a little.

"Free running?"

Tom nods.

"As a subsection of track and field, yes. The track captain is Samantha Wolfe, and they meet every other day. Today I think she's helping with the volleyball team, there's a big game coming up."

Score.

"Alright... Last one, I think. Any teachers or places I should watch out for?"

Tom laughs heartily, but you almost wish he was doing anything else. Bit by bit the whole room is becoming more foreboding, and his laughter is only making things worse.

"Just be polite. Knock before entering, and be sure someone invites you in first. So long as you use common sense you'll be fine. The teachers aren't going to eat you."

He laughs again and sighs.

"Now, as for your orientation... You'll need to go to the nurse's office for a medical exam, and once you're all checked out we have a video for you to watch to help you get situated. Then you can pick your classes. Sound good?"

"I have a fear of needles, I'd rather not have to do that."

Tom laughs again. It's starting to get a little frightening now.

"Nonsense! Why in the world would we need needles? No no, we just need to do a standard physical. Chest exam, height, weight, that kind of thing."

He stands up and opens the door.

"I'll write you a hall pass so that you don't have to worry about the hall monitors hassling you."

His eyes look a little different now. He's smiling, but it doesn't make it past his cheeks. His eyes are imposing, his request turning into a command. You're thankful for your glasses.

"Yeah, a hall pass would be good. I'll see the nurse. Then the video."

His eyes soften and he gives you a genuine smile, or at least what passes for genuine.

"Wonderful!"

He walks out and you follow to find him scribbling two notes. One is your hall pass, and the other is a short note to the nurse.

'New student, standard check up, orientation'

He hands you both and nods.

"Run along now!"

You exit the room and make a show of fishing out your map. As you walk away from the office you try to decide what the best plan would be.

Your trip to the nurse's office is most uneventful, and the hall pass sits in your pocket, unused. Maybe you can save it to slip away to the nurse some other time. You head for the second floor and knock on the door. The light is off, and there's no response from inside. You open the door slowly. The office looks more like a mad scientist lab than a medical facility, with beakers bubbling away over low flames and jars of preserved organs on one of the shelves. You step inside and almost jump out of your skin when a skeleton falls on you. You manage to avoid getting caught under it, and bump into something obscured in the darkness. There's a soft groan, and you stumble back a few steps.

"Who goes there...?"

The figure advances towards you. The woman, dressed in a nurse uniform a size too large, is staring at you vacantly. There are bags under her eyes like she hasn't slept in ages, and she leans in close, her disheveled hair falling in front of one eye. She blinks and her eye focuses on you.

"Ah. Ah!"

She smiles at you, grinning sleepily.

"A patient... I'll go fetch the gurney..."

You hesitate a bit.

"...new student. Not a patient. I'm just here for a basic checkup, but I have another doctor who did all of that for me. You got the paperwork, right?"

The nurse blinks, as though coming back to her senses.

"Paperwork? I never get any paperwork, they just tell me what needs to be done. If you put in the paperwork then it's fine."

She turns and walks over to her desk.

"You should kill some time though. No sense making them think it's not all to procedure. Do you like coffee?"

She pulls out a pack of cards and a pair of mugs, one shaped like a skull and the other like a beaker. She pours before you can say anything, smiling at you.

"Let's play some poker and chat."

You sit down across from her and shuffle the deck a bit while she sips her coffee. Slowly the bags fade from around her eyes, and her messy hair seems to straighten out a bit.

"Nothing like a good mug of coffee..."

She smirks a bit, wide awake, and reclines as you deal the cards out.

"A friendly game. No bets."

She nods.

"Of course. Gambling is wrong."

She grins and winks. Well, you think she winked. The game goes for a few rounds, and you trade back and forth with her. You read her well, but not well enough. Fortunately you manage to bluff better than she can read you, which leads to both of you playing conservatively before too long. You take the final hand, and she pouts.

"Aww."

She grabs your coffee mug and sips from it.

"Well, that was fun. I'm Angie, by the way. Nurse Lott to most people. Probably better to keep things professional between us."

She winks again.

"Well, that's all that done. I'll just stamp your forms and when your paperwork comes in I'll get around to updating it. Need anything else?"

You pocket the deck of cards after slipping them back into their box.

"Assuming you win."

She nods.

"Always."

You head out the door with a smile, squinting a bit as your eyes adjust to the light. At the end of the hall you spot someone walking towards you with a serious expression on her face and a black band around her arm. Trailing behind her is a young man with a carefree expression and a black band of his own.

"Halt! Trespasser! Violator!"

The young man laughs a bit as she walks right up to you, hopping on one foot to meet your gaze and leer at you.

"Where is your hall pass, criminal?"

The girl scowls at you, although her hopping is making things more and more comical. The young man beside her is cracking up quite a bit. She turns, jumping up and smacking him, but he keeps laughing as though her slap did nothing. She huffs and turns to you.

"A likely story, criminal scum. Very well, we'll see about this!"

She pushes open the door to the nurse's office. You can see her at her desk with some paperwork, and as the girl shoves you into the room you can see your name on the documents. She's forging your examination forms. Angie blinks and looks up at you, smiling.

"It's polite to knock."

She looks behind you and smiles sweetly.

"Abusing my patients again, Kim?"

Kim puts her hands on her hips.

"I'm making sure there's no rule-breaking! He needs a hall pass!"

Angie nods a bit and grabs your palm, writing on it.

"There. So you won't lose it."

Kim grabs your arm and pulls, reading what Angie jotted down.

"Hmm. Alright then. This checks out."

Kim turns to you and smiles sweetly.

"Have a good day!"

You consult your map and letter. Thankfully you don't need to go back to the guidance office to get your schedule set up, you just need to go down to the main office to fill out some forms. You head off to get your classes sorted out, and surprisingly none of the faculty pay you any mind when you walk in. After getting the forms from the front desk you sit down to make your selections.

Many of the courses can be tested out of for credit or advancement to the next level. In fact, that's how most of the classes seem to be set up, with tiers in each subject. You have to take the basics, math, science, history and literature, but from there it gets pretty diverse. Math doesn't subdivide the topics til higher tiers, but you can specify a science to focus on, a literature course and a period of history.

Electives range from art to music to sports, as well as other categories of the main classes. You have four elective slots to fill, but you could make one of them a free period. The form rather bluntly states that free periods are for the lazy or those breaking rules, and taking a free period will give you a rather bad rep with the teachers.

So what classes will you sign up for?
>>

Looking at each, rock climbing would build greater upper body strength, but wouldn't take much agility into account.

Gymnastics would build core strength like rock climbing, but less upper body strength overall, yet would use far more agility.

Martial arts wouldn't really build anything unless it has an attached exercise routine, which I will assume it does. But, you know, fighting.

Yoga. I mean, it does a little of everything, and chicks.

As apes, humans are naturally suited to climbing. It shouldn't take training. You don't need to practice rock climbing to be able to climb in general, and being a good rock climber just requires you to be able to identify where you can and can't place your hands and feet, and being able to bodily haul yourself between those places.

Not trying to discredit people who do rock climb, but it's not like some mystical and difficult art. Anyone can do it, but of course people who do it often will be better.

Still, just climbing around on things for fun will get you plenty of practice in that regard.

It still does a lot of that, though.

It's just not disproportionate like rock-climbing.
>>
>>43322439
And literally everything else in PE will build strength.

Granted, less upper body, but still strength nonetheless.

Moreover, building strength is pretty useless, since essentially every monster is superhumanly strong by default, or is otherwise pointless to put strength against (like ghosts), so until we become a monster, we will never keep up, and when we do, we will be near their level immediately.

You fill out your schedule forms and check them over. They're to your liking, you decide, or at least good enough for now. You hand over the sheet and a stern woman looks at you before entering in your class selection into the computer and passing you a printed copy of the result. Hunting first thing, then chemistry, math and Medieval history in the morning. Then you have lunch, PE, literature, Latin and shop. The woman regards you for a moment before turning back to whatever she had been doing before that.

You head for the dorm rooms for the time being. Better to get settled in first and take stock of things. You reflect on your research as you try to work out what to expect. Red Fields was originally an all-girls school and the sister school to Green Forest, an all-boys academy. Several suspicious murders and a fire led to it being shut down a few years back, and Red Fields has since been coed, doubling up housing as needed. A single would have cost a lot of extra cash, so you settled on splitting your room.

As you head for the boy's dormitories you find yourself feeling like you're being followed, but you don't spot anyone when you turn to look. You can't decide if it's nerves or if someone is already hunting you, and you hurry along towards your room. Whoever was following you, they don't pass through the door to the boy's area, and you make it to your room in one piece.

You get out your key and unlock the door to find a fairly roomy dorm. You have a bed, a desk, and a mini common space with a couch and a place for a TV. Presently occupying that space is a large monitor hooked up to a large computer and some kind of gaming rig. Your roommate clearly has a love of technology, gadgets littering their side of the room, including their bed. A few seem mystical in nature, but you can't pinpoint what they do.

Your suitcases are lined up by your bed, and you set about unpacking, putting away clothes and concealing your hunting supplies carefully. A few stakes, some holy water, a hand crossbow and a silver cross are each stashed away one by one. You have the afternoon off while everyone else has classes, and then afternoon activities. You're kinda hungry, and grabbing lunch might be wise.

You decide to head to the cafeteria and grab some food, and maybe get a better look at the other students to see what you're up against. You grab a stake and a small mirror and carefully conceal the stake in your jacket, keeping the mirror in your sleeve. You head off, and notice something on the ground outside the dorm building. It's a small package, badly wrapped, with a note on top.

'Dear new kid,

Here's a welcome present. You can pay me back by coming to track tomorrow. Hope you like it.

Signed,'

The word "Sammy" is crossed out hastily, followed by "a friend", which is also crossed out, and "Red Fields Welcoming Committee", which is underlined. Inside the box is a small pouch of burned cookies, an apology note about the state of the cookies, and a small store-bought package. You don't have to look up to tell someone is watching you.

I mean, I'm not saying we should bang Sam.

But she brought us cookies.
>>
You open up the pouch and take out a cookie, examining it for a moment. You look up and smile a bit, catching sight of movement down the hall, a brief glimpse of a school uniform sleeve.

"Thanks, Sammy."

You bite into one of the cookies. You instantly regret being born with taste buds. Not only are they burned, but if they hadn't been they would taste of nothing but almond and vanilla extracts and flour. These are not good cookies. These are awful in every way, and swallowing the bite you took without gagging takes every ounce of effort you can muster.

"Mmm. Not bad."

You put the cookie back in the pouch.

"These should make a good dessert."

You can hear footsteps walking away, and you follow them since they're heading in the same direction as the cafeteria. Sammy is pretty sneaky for a tall girl, though, and you don't spot her at all on your way there. When you reach the cafeteria it's packed, and you don't see her anywhere. You do see the food line is pretty short though.
