“Where have you been?”. The question comes mostly out as a joke and followed by chuckling and a few stifled yawns. It is late and your own legs are quite tired and eager to remind you of such fact. Not that staying awake for this long didn't have any benefit, and now that you think of it you wonder how Tahenohan can manage to not be even just half as tired as you are, but that's a question that likely won't be answered anytime soon. If at all.

They had the courtesy to leave something for the two of you, but couldn't much help the dinner going cold. Well, “cold” is very relative as there's a distinct lack of meat and the weather itself is hot enough that cold dishes start to become palatable out of necessity if not taste. You still have to become familiar with all the exotic fruits and vegetables from this land, but the avocado and seeds salad is starting to become familiar to your taste buds. You're not sure what kind of seeds these are, but they seem to be edible, and some are naturally salted which contribute in giving even humble food a decent taste.

Bread is still a rare treat outside of Reboldeux. Of course people in New Royo have been tilling fields and the temple of Gaia is likely going to be finished soon, but nature has its times and agriculture is not a venue fit for the impatient. It's going to be a while before grain stockpiles will grow and bread will return to everyone's daily diet.

Assuming the local cuisine doesn't just adapt to what's available, like it's starting to do.

Lucas and Zillis went to sleep already, and so have Reiram and Bryld. Mires is still milling about the common room and will likely fall onto bed like a brick when she feels like it and not a moment sooner.

It won't be too long to get to New Royo, but that's just a middle stop. Meztli and Mosper aren't early sleepers either, it would seem.

“So what do you think about our destination?”, you ask your father now that you're both too tired for jokes and leg pulling, “What are your plans?”.

He lets out a long breath as he savors a tankard of a possibly alcoholic drink that might just be cheap mead as you can't imagine anyone drinking that much of a strong liquor, “I don't know, I just wanted to get out of Reboldeux to be honest. Joining the army up in Maner would be the best course of action, of course, but...”.

“But?”, you blink, but he just lets the topic sit there without going further in depth. Meztli stares at him straight for the longest while, but all the result it brings is for him to change the topic.

“Maybe I should accompany you to the Marquise”, he adds with much more spirit and a bright smile, “It's always a good idea to get in the good graces of the local ruling class. Just don't get involved too deeply, some of them tend to start thinking they own you if you do. You don't want that to happen, might as well join the army at that point”.

“You've been adventuring like this for a long time, haven't you?”, you suddenly wonder, “Were you planning to plunder the Shadow Marches for riches too?”.

He chuckles in good spirit, almost surprised, “That's the idea! Now I don't have a very large party... Sorry Mez, I do appreciate you yes, but I was under the impression that the army would take care of most problems that would usually require a large group”.

Meztli keeps staring at him, not batting an eye even when he comment on her presence. It's starting to get somewhat unnerving. He absolutely does not mind, however.

“I'll have to see what the situation is like”, he claims in the end, “I know the undead plague isn't as dire as people made it, but who knows what's it like far out in the wilderness...”.

>”Do you think it's actually serious away from here?”.
>”So you don't have any plans?”.

Could be, but that doesn't preclude bringing more adventurers!

You make a small frown as you are wont to do when gears start grinding in your brain as you notice something off. “If it's so dangerous out there in small groups”, you start, “Then why is it just the two of you? Shouldn't you travel with a larger party?”.

Whatever it is your question had to hit, it scored quite well. Your father remains frozen with his mouth agape for a moment and Meztli redirects her stare somewhere else, like on the small bowl of lytchee that she's been eating for possibly a long while now. Their discarded shells are amounting to quite a considerable pile.

“Oh well”, he smiles, “See, forming an adventuring party is quite easy for someone your age, but as time goes on, it gets a little more... Challenging”, he chuckles.

“Challenging?”, Tahenohan tilts her head, which is kind of her version of your frown, “Shouldn't it always be easy to find young people willing to adventure?”.

“Well now that really depends on-”.

“No youngsters”, Meztli intervenes. It feels like she has more to say but actually doesn't. Even Mosper is left a little dumbfound.

“The point is”, he sighs, “Maybe I have changed, over time. I have more experience so I know which adventures look profitable and which smell like traps, or fishy business. When a cloaked stranger sits in the dark corner of a tavern and looks in the common room while smoking a pipe, I can tell whether he has a quest to give or is just a tryhard trying to grow an attitude. This...”.

He pauses, scouring his own lexicon for an appropriate term, “... Most adventurers retire before they reach my age, or become something else. It's hard to find others at this point, you know what I mean?”.

>”Yes”.
>”No”.
>”Maybe you should just retire?”.

“I get what you're saying”, you nod your head.

“You do?”.

“Yeah. I think you should just retire already”.

You can feel the air getting colder after your (presumed) joke, your father gives you a long look and then sighs, “Oh really”.

You chuckle, your father's so easy to bully at times, “Seriously thought, why don't you just join someone younger instead if you think you're too picky? Maybe they won't have your experience but that also means they won't have your preconceptions”.

“It's not a matter of preconceptions”, he frowns, “It's just experience. You make dumb mistakes when you're a beginner, in every field, but it's so hard to find a seasoned adventurer that isn't a solitary magic user or one that has a troupe of... Creatures that give me the creeps”.

“Of course they make dumb mistakes at first”, you insist, “That's why you have to be there, but you can't expect them to not make any. People also learn from their mistakes”.

He just shakes his head, “Look, what I mean is: people quit adventuring when they get the amount of experience that would make them... Better adventurers. I have lost track of the partymates and friends that have become courtesans, military leaders or successful businessmen thanks to what they learned from their adventuring days but hardly anyone just... Makes adventuring their only calling”.

You wait for a moment, then strike a smirk, “Are you sure this isn't just some kind of adventuring honeymoon?”.

He flicks a few lychee shells your way with his finger while shaking his head, “Oh you...”, he mutters under a vague smile. Meztli might as well have a cast bronze face for all the expressiveness she has, meaning she doesn't react to such suggestion.

>”Seriously, maybe you should retire too”.

“What Meztli?”, you ask, “Isn't she... A bit younger than you are?”

“Oh, she's an exception”, he smiles, “There's people that get it and grow a contemplative and serious attitude from the very beginning, even if it's rare. Most adventurers are of rather sanguine disposition and like to act more than they bother to think”.

“I see”, you concede, even though you still can't be quite sure that's all there is to it, “That should be enough proof that you have to get younger blood in your party if you want it to survive”.

He sighs again, setting the tankard down, “Well, we'll see how's the situation up in Maner, maybe we can find something... Some new people, someone interested in taking a ganker at the dark and who's not afraid of wielding a spike...”.

It looks like he's mostly talking to himself, and Meztli is as silent as ever. At least until you look at her, at which point she notices and speaks up. “Just two is fine”, is all she says, however.

“Oh come on Mez”, he nudges her, “Don't you want to have more people? We could tackle longer adventures, not worry so much about each other's back, and maybe challenge more difficult quests and find more riches!”.

She shrugs, “Sure. If that doesn't work, just two is fine”. She talks with a tone that people use to mean their latest statement is final and is not going to be redacted anytime soon. Most likely never.

“Speaking of which”, you continue nonetheless, “Why don't you just... Teach people how to adventure? Wouldn't that give you better odds?”.

“You can't teach adventuring like you teach a child to read”, he shakes his head with grim determination, “You learn by doing and risking life and limb. Some don't even want to begin, and those that do quit when they start learning”.

“I hope you'll find a way”, you get up as well and have to stifle another of the many yawns that you've been getting. It was a really long day of walking and you ought to sleep now, “But like I said: go for the young ones”.

“You sound like a dirty old pervert”, he smiles.

“Fine, be that way”. You and Tahenohan get to your rooms as well. There's plenty of space since the caravansary is empty, and you don't really even need to sleep together, but the half-elf seems to be fond of using your body, and a certain top-heavy part of it, as a pillow, which you cannot really mind as she's light as a feather and you barely even notice she's there when you sleep.

You don't have the time to think about Bryld because you're tired, but in retrospect not bothering her is a good idea as she was most definitely dead asleep already when you went to bed, together with more already asleep people. They might tolerate you being late for dinner because you had to have some private time for some wild sex inside a tent, but you know for sure that disturbing people in their sleep is the best way to make them start hating you.

When the following day comes and you reach New Royo, you're almost surprised to find out it's been consistently growing over time. You didn't quite notice while you were in there, but the temple of Gaia is really taking shape, with its roughly dome-like structure of wood being filled with fertile soil so as to create floating gardens instead of walls and roofs. In the middle, a taller wooden structure, not unlike the skeleton of a windmill, is starting to take shape.

“Now this feels a lot more friendly”, Zillis comments with a sense of approval in her voice. Your friends seem to be taking quite a bit of solace in this village's peaceful looks.

You have experience in this, you know exactly where you need to go and who to talk to in order to make sure your friends will find a shelter, something to do and make sure to let everyone know there's more mouths to be fed.

Showing your friends around and making sure they do everything right is very simple: there's not much in the way of bureaucracy and most of it was introduced after you dealt with the census, meaning that they have a list to start working from, and adding a few names isn't difficult. The inhabitants of New Royo are quite glad to have more people and fill your friends with questions regarding Reboldeux's situation and whether more people will come or not.

As for work to be done, the construction teams are starting to get busy again after people got confident enough to go back to cutting wood without fear of undead striking at them from the dark of the night. Agnes has been quite good at convincing everyone that it was safe, mostly thanks to her relentless hunt, which has brought surprisingly little results. She claims to have a tally of something like eight skeletons, but then again she went out of her way to find them, which likely means a good chunk of them would have hardly, if ever, reached town.

Of course practically everything that's needed is physical labour. Whether it's farming, woodcutting, woodworking, building or even just cooking. There's not quite a shortage of workers but building a village from scratch is, you're learning, a daunting experience if you take it all at once. Now that the foundations for many buildings are done you realize that you've been living in a place that lacked what you used to consider basic commodities for a long time.

Oh is that all? Such restraint anon!
>>
The first thing you need to do, once you're sure to have gotten everyone settled down, is to check on whether they'd like to stay or go further.

Your friends, as expected, can't quite give you a straight answer now: they're still rather busy being happy they're not in Reboldeux anymore and trying to see whether they can start over now that they're actually part of the colonists and actively participating in the Reconquista. For now, they're more than happy to stay, but since Maner isn't too far, they might decide to move further, even though Reiram has expressed interest in seeing this town develop, especially the temple's cultivations.

Your father, and Meztli as well, are more interested in seeing what Maner is holding for them, but they claim they do not mind staying for a while. “I understand you want to make sure your friends are happy and everything”, your father claims with a kind smile, “Don't worry about us, we can help out a little, too. I see there's plenty of young volunteers too, I thought they'd be closer to the actual army...”.

“Oh, while we're on that topic”, it occurs to you as you talk to your father that he might have interested in meeting the more interesting figures in town, “I should introduce you to Agnes and Astreya. They're the captain of the volunteers and an autarch, respectively. Maybe they can help you with your... Own issue?”.

“Hmm...”, your father seems intrigued, “You got to know some interesting people, I have to say...”.

“Don't feel forced to”, Meztli tells him, not quite like a snap as her voice was almost without weight, but it was sudden, “Especially not with the wizard. Remember what you used to tell me about them?”.

“Yeah”, he clears his throat, “Can't say I had the best experiences with them. Sorry, no offense”.

Tahenohan just smiles back at him. With that merry, manic smile of hers.

“I think you should see Astreya first, then”, you assure him with a smile, “I don't know what kind of experiences Meztli is talking about but I assure you she's a good girl”.

“If you say so...”, he looks like he still has some reservations, but he's willing to trust you, at least.

“I'm serious”, you nod as you start moving towards the edge of the town. Now that there's more than just a couple communal huts, telling where New Royo begins and where it ends is becoming easier and easier. You wonder what kind of sight Astreya has from her own house, has she ever looked out of the window to see the town being built out of nowhere past the sparse trees? If she did, it must have been quite positive to get a good feeling of civilization going.

You wonder how long it's going to take before more, smaller villages and farmsteads start to pop up along the paved road. It's definitely bound to be one of the main and most important roads in the new Shadow Marches, to the point you wonder if there's a name already. What's weird is that you've seen very few rivers, but fortunately there's plenty of wells as the underground appears to be full of water, so it's not much of a problem for survival as it is weird to look at settlements this small, this rural and yet this far away from a river, or a canal.

But maybe in five years everything will be so different you wouldn't recognize it if you saw it now.

Oddly enough, as you are about to reach Astreya's house, you meet Yomi. The sight of the cross-dressing demon with yellow eyes and short grey hair makes your father grimace even if he's not familiar to him. He is to you, though, and before you can wonder what he's doing outside and why he's approaching you, you see him raise a hand like in greeting and hold it up while in front of you, as if waiting for something.

“'sup, bitch”, he goes, “Time to switch up”.

You give him that five and he moves on past you, like that's all he needed to say and he doesn't quite care anymore.

“Wait, what?”, you then turn as you recover from his radical manners, whose awesomeness stunned you for a moment.

“Our deal, remember? I go warn your friends, you switch me up for one day”, he spreads his wings, who suddenly and very instantly grow to be large enough to actually allow him to fly properly instead of being some tiny and actually quite cute vestigial thing, “Thanks for the help bitch but today I'm Free!”.

Before you can ask or say anything he just jumps up into the sky and flies off at a speed that a winged humanoid of that size shouldn't possess, at least not with such a start.

Everyone in your troupe follows your eyes and stares up at his form, which quickly disappears in the horizon. For a few moments, not a single word comes out of anyone's mouth.

“Are you sure you're not relatives?”, your father then decides to ask.

Before there's time to witness whether this joke has any effect on you or not, Bryld decides to speak up, “So, uh... What does that mean, exactly?”.

“She made a deal with Yomi so he could tell his friends to be ready to leave, and in change he asked her to switch places with him for one day”, Tahenohan helpfully explains, likely enjoying the situation, at least judging from her tone and expression.

The look Bryld gives you is chill-inducing.

“You really care about your friends”, Meztli says, and her voice seems to be filled with both pity and respect. You'd say in about equal measure.

“Still not terribly impressed about this Astreya bloke”, your father shakes his head again.

“Look I know her familiar is like this but she's a lot better I swear”, you hope she is, because you're going to be serving her for the rest of this day.

Funny that, huh. You wonder what that entails.

Pretending nothing just happened, you go knock at her door. It's funny how it's in the moments you're trying to distract yourself from your very life that you notice the small details that you really should have noticed before and yet escaped you for all this time.

Like, hey, would you look at that, she actually has a garden around her oddly-shaped house, and she's been keeping a few potted plants that are now growing to give a much fresher and more colourful look to her already rather pretty abode.

You wonder if she's also growing some mushrooms in the under-stair of her porch, because you pick up some vaguely familiar scent as you're climbing it. You can't quite identify it but you know you've smelled it already while exploring the jungle.

With no options left but to brave the consequence of your choice, you rap at her door and wait for her to show up.

“Oh, it's you!”, she has a somewhat disheveled look, as if she barely even brushed her hair this morning and slept in until a minute ago, or maybe even just until now. She's still very pretty thanks to her ageless features, but she also clearly just got up from bed, “Good thing, I was starving and needed some help around the house”.

She yawns, and even if he's behind you you can feel your father's judging eyes on the back of your head. “Er... Hello. There's, uh, some people I'd like you to meet”, you try, not sure what to expect.

She glances over your shoulder, then smiles, “Oh my, visitors! Greetings everyone, please come in. Lillith, dear, why don't you make everyone coffee? Oh, and I need mine black or I won't wake up”, and she yawns again, retreating back inside.

It's odd.

It's odd because you've always seen her treat Yomi like this, every time you've seen her. Of course you didn't much pay attention because Yomi is a bound demon and he's clearly a servant and it's not like his attitude can bring any amount of sympathy towards him, in general, but it's weird.

It's weird because Astreya's always been a very nice, calm fellow with a kind smile and a very understanding soul that would sit down with you, have coffee and cookies with you, laugh with you, sleep with you, bring you on overnight flying trips, and still make you feel like she'd do more for you.

And it's not like she's treating you poorly, it's just... You're her servant now, and she's clearly expecting you to behave like one, even if she's being tremendously nice about it. All this, of course, in front of your friends and your father, who seems to have some kind of mistrust towards magic users.

And demons, but then again who trusts demons?

Oh right. You do.

Not that you can complain, Yomi did his part. “I-is it a good time for visits?”, you ask trying to make your voice not tremble as you watch Astreya go to her room to change, sliding the doors closed.

“Yes, yes, just prepare coffee dear, I'll be there in a moment”, she lazily answers before the door slams shut.

You turn to your friends, smile, and pretend everything's normal. “See? She's nice. Please do make yourselves comfortable, I'll just, uh... Make coffee, yes”.

Despite your best attempts, you can't avoid noticing Tahenohan's manic smile, your father's frown, Meztli's look of pity and you can't even think back on the stare Bryld is giving you, it's daunting, even in your memories.

You find refuge in the kitchen, whose doors you nearly close. This isn't a moment where having eyes on you helps.

You catch your breath and try not to panic. You find the moka, you find the cups, now you just need to pull the coffee can from behind those ceramic jugs without breaking anything...

And this is it for Episode 45!

Thanks to everyone for participating. Next week we should be back to our normal Monday schedule. And for more servitude shenanigans.

And thanks for the art. It's tremendously cute, all of it.

No, thank YOU.

Thanks for running! This is gonna be fun.

Thanks for running, MP. Can't wait for the next thread, even if I'm going to miss it completely.

I tried something more SFW, but beggars can't be choosers.

Are you liking where this quest is going?

Very, yes! I wish I had more time to run it. And maybe even run a second quest that had more high action and maybe even fighting and stuff but it's okay, I can barely manage to run this one I shouldn't overestimate my resources.

>>43332783
I really appreciate everything anyone draws for me, I really do, so don't worry about that.
>>
>>43332855
A not SoL quest by you? Hmm, i'd like to see that, but not to the detriment of SO (and your eventful life).

Could run it on Anonkun and do updates weekly/daily/etc instead of running for hours like you are with SO.

I have no idea how that would work and I'm not sure I can do it, but if you explain I might eventually consider it, depending on how things work out for me.

Anonkun is sorta...terrible in every conceivable way.
>>
>>43332956
Basically, for SO you run hours long sessions. You post multiple times during that time.

On anonkun, they don't have threads like this. You can update whenever you like. As this is so, you could update whenever you have free time, work on it like a play-by-post sort of thing and update whenever you like, whether that be daily, weekly, whenever.

http://anonkun.com/

It's a site made for quests by a /tg/ guy. The whole site is only for quests and has no restriction of content, literally. Quests have a "cover" on the boards that users use to access the quest; you don't see story posts displayed like here on /tg/'s front page/catalog. It also has a chat for the writer and the readers, and can have unlimited images per post. Stories also have a timer the writer can set for the next session.

It's a cool idea...just poorly executed. The dev isn't as good with coding as ideal, and the servers lag from time to time. The UI can be clunky and counterintuitive, and very buggy.

The community is mostly /tg/, but still different. Some writers there are your readers here.

So... Like a play-by-forum site? With a live chat and fancier covers?
>>
>>43333079
It's a quest site. You do quests there. You can run them like you do here, but you can also run them sporadically like a play-by-post
>>
>>43333079
Somewhat.
>>
>>43333079
Akun is pretty broken to be honest. But it's still a good site for slower quests. The best way to see what the site is like is to jump over and have a look at a live quest or something.

I'd like to see you give it a try if you end up doing something new, but be ready to hide the chat in case it becomes too distracting~
>>
>>43333192
I don't think we will be very active in the chat.

On the other hand, it might attract more readers.
>>
>>43333234
Imagine if this got ported over to akun, ahaha.

Futanari, monster people and NSFW? Well...
>>
>>43333254
Let's not pretend you're not lewd as fuck, anon
>>
>>43333254
It's not NSFW, though, just a bit lewd at some times. And definetely not smut.

Well, there's a whole World of Lewdness.
