You herd the still-sniffling Willie into the bathroom long enough to get properly dressed, then rotate places to shave as quickly as you dare. You emerge to find Willie sitting on your unmade bed, swinging her feet nervously and staring at the floor. You finish wiping your face dry.

“Willie?”

“WHAT!?” she says, flinching as if you're poised to strike, her attention snapping to you apprehensively.

“Going to tell me what all this 'scared of me' business is?”

She looks down at the floor and scuffs the carpet with her shoes. “Uhh...”

You wait patiently, using the damp towel to wipe the dust off your working khaki cap - it's been a while since you've worn it. Haven't worn it since before LA, in fact. You've got two pair of dress whites, but you're pretty much introduced to the base, now, and nobody in their right mind wants to wear that goddamned monkey suit every day.

“They were talking about, uh. there was a fight and youkindofswordedpeopleand-” Willie's frightened voice diminishes into an unintelligible murmur.

“There was a fight, yeah,” you verify, limping into the kitchen and taking out your painkillers. The heavy opiate-based shit tends to dull your mind, but with the new gash on your leg and the exertion placed on your wounded thigh last night, you need it. To say nothing of the damn hangover. Naka really did a number on you, in more ways than one. You pop half the recommended dose - just to take the edge off. “So what of it, Willie?”

“You were... scary.”

“What, is Sendai telling tall tales?”

“It's the video-”

You hear Willie flailflop off the other side of the bed when your water glass clatters against the countertop. Sticking your head out of the kitchenette you find her folded in two and quite stuck between the bed and wall.

“What did you just say?”

Willie's butt just sinks deeper into the crevice as she whimpers fearfully.

Pulling your smartphone off its charger (you're amazed you thought to plug it in before crashing, all things told,) you tap the screen shortcut for Naka's number. The phone rings and rings and rings till she finally picks up. “Good morning, Admiral Settle~”

“Uh, good morning, Naka,” you say awkwardly. Her tone is a little too bright, considering what passed between you last night. “Uh, you been to breakfast yet-”

“No.”

“Oh, damn.” You sigh. “Guess I'll head to mess and dive into the scuttlebutt myself, then-”

“Settle.”

“Yeah?”

Naka's voice falters and fades. “I...” you hear her take a small, unsteady breath. “I would like to formally tender my resignation,” she says, her voice so soft you can barely hear it - and then she hangs up.

Your hand drops to your side, squeezing the smartphone till the case starts to flex, a fresh pressure building in your head. It feels like a mental scream, no sense or substance, just a raw upwelling of frustration.

Literally the opposite. I had so many plot threads already introduced that just trying to wrap them all up had become a massive chore. I didn't *want* to stop writing, I had plenty more ideas and future things to do, but it was such a goddamn mess that I just couldn't have fun writing it anymore, not even a little. It was killed by its own weight, basically.

It wasn't till I started KCQ that I really realized how much I'd learned about writing quests and managing a writefag stable.

Honestly there were more than a few plot points you could've just left hanging and no one would've complained. But hey, you do you. The feeling sticks with you into the bright summer morning, Willie keeping close behind you as she rubs blood circulation back into her rear end. You're leaning on the cane more than usual today; but the pain is keeping your mind sharp and cutting away last night's cobwebs quickly. So many things happened yesterday that you don't know where to begin unraveling them, so you apply the old sailor's maxim - more chow is never bad.

Willie crowds you so closely that she's stepping on your heels by the time you enter the O-Club - you note the door guard has become door guards, and they're both carrying M-4s with bulkier-looking magazines on their plate carriers than you remember, complete with underslung M-203s and what seem to be laser designators under the muzzle. You return your polite salute as you cross the threshold.

The building is busy as usual, and packed full of late-risers, which seems to include Ise and Hyuuga, as well as most of the Japanese cruisers. Hayashimo is trying to disappear into a corner as the two green-glad CAs try to coax her into some oatmeal. She's still on the mend, but it looks like the attention is vexing her more than her injuries.

You're halfway to the breakfast bar when you hear Willie squeak and run into your back, hiding her face in your shirt as she wraps her arms around your middle. You stop, startled, and half-turn before realizing that the entire room has gone silent.

Everyone, human and shipgirl alike are staring at you quietly.

[ ] Walk over to the most apprehensive-looking one and just... loom.
[ ] Look around for whatever it is that's caught their attention.
[ ] Fuck this shit, take Willie to a real goddamn restaurant.

I wonder if any USN sluts will come back Abyssal, just so that they can kill Japs again

For example:

>sank at Pearl
>corpse left to sit there for 2 years
>Navy basically does "RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE" and refloats her mangled body
>rebuild her with the newest technology available
>almost nothing left of the original ship
>first thing she does upon returning is hatefuck Yamashiro in the middle of the night
>decommissioned immediately after the war ends and is scrapped

All she would remember is an immense hatred of all things Japan, us working with them would probably be her final trigger for losing it and trying to go on a murderous rampage.

Re: HMS Warspite write-up

You wanted to know what I meant about your punctuation and paragraph-spacing? I’ve done an edit to show what I meant and put it in a pastebin so you can download it for comparison. (It's got a one-week lifespan, so work fast!) I have to apologise, though: your spacing was dodgy at places, but the horrible punctuation issues were mostly stuff I was mis-remembering from the Native American piece fluffbringer did.

You fixate on the closest set of stares and turn, bewildered, looking for the source. As you find more people to the side, you follow their stares, till you've turned in a complete circle. Having surveyed the room completely, you come to a halt, totally bewildered.

“What is he looking for, Hyuuga?” Ise asks, her bright voice seeming to echo across the conspicuously silent room.

Hyuuga sighs. “First Kitakami, now the Admiral,” she says in a soft voice that everyone can hear clearly. “Admiral~” she calls out, louder. “Willie Dee is right behind you!”

You twist 'round to find Willie, who's been clinging to your back throughout the maneuver. “Oh, so she is.” You glance around the room suspiciously before patting her on the back. “It's okay. I'm sure Hate will break something more expensive by noon, and then *he'll* be famous.”

With the tension broken, voices start to murmur again and you're able to reach the buffet bar and load your plate up. You query Willie for preferences and load her tray according to her tentative, almost inaudible replies, then pick out a table - incidentally, the nearest one seems to just clear out for you. Willie accepts her tray and starts eating very, very quietly.

Based on your reception, you really, *really* need to find out what the hell this “video” is about. Unless Sendai recorded something shakey on her cameraphone that made you look like SettleSquach, you can't figure what's got them all so... weird.

On to other concerns, then. “So, Willie?”

“Ahp!?” she says, choking halfway through her milk.

“How've you been doing this past week?”

She seems to shrink in her chair - she's already small enough to need a booster seat, and now she can barely look at you over her scrambled eggs. “Umkay.”

“So how's your training been?”

“Naka... is nice,” Willie allows. “She... never gets angry with me. Even when I shot her.”

“You what!?”

That was a mistake - Willie vanishes under the table, only her slightly-vibrating hat still visible. “I d-d-didn't m-m-mean t-to!”

“Just a training round, right?”

She sniffs. “Yes...”

“And what about Sammy?”

The hat starts vibrating faster. “U-uh s-sh-she's s-s-s-cary-”

“Has she been helping you?”

“S-she said sh-she was g-g-gonna g-g-g-rape me if I d-d-didn't s-s-stop her, and, uh, she, uh-”

You fold your hands together and give Willie's hat a dark glare over your knuckles. “Grape?”

“L-like c-c-ram me into a b-b-arrel and s-mash m-me up, uh, I think...? It sounds b-b-b-baaaaad!”

You really, *really* have to chat with Hate about this bullshit. “So what happened?”

“... and?”

“She laughed more and s-s-aid I just had to g-g-et c-closer, w-was all,” Willie replies, her eyes visible over the eggs again.

“Well... I guess that does sound like Sammy,” you allow.

“Do I h-have t-to keep training with her?” Willie says miserably. “She's so *scary...*”

“She was just trying to show you what you can do,” you offer weakly. “I mean, she's scarier than an abyssal, so if you can hit her at close range-”

Nope. Naka might BECOME an Abyssal, but that's just because of post-manifestation bullshit she's gone through.

Here's a list of some Abyssal traits:
>Come from fucked over ships
>incite discomfort in normal shipgirls
>Incredibly powerful and able to take absurd amounts of punishment
>Rarely if ever express non-negative emotions
>Undyingly loyal to who/whatever is guiding them

Last I checked, Ari fits that list almost perfectly.

The physical traits (white skin, glowing eyes, black spikes, teeth) are all additions or alterations to the shipgirl frame.

What if an Abyssal shipgirl manifests normally, is mentally altered towards stoicism and loyalty (or they're summoned to the Abyssals BECAUSE of that mentality) and THEN is altered into an Abyssal form? If one were to summon them post-manifestation but before the physical alterations, you'd have a normal-bodied but incredibly stoic and loyal shipgirl on your hands.

The only thing that stopped Ari from being an Abyssal is that she appeared to us (for no apparent reason).

Speaking of Shipgirls becoming Abyssals
>>
>>43340704

Yes, that. Though her appearance at Pearl might help explain why she didn't become an Abyssal: most of the Abyssal ships likely felt betrayed by their countries (because they wouldn't have gotten fucked over if their countries had cared about them). Arizona, meanwhile, knew very well that her fucking over was not her country's fault. So when the Abyssals tried to summon her, she subconsciously (or however you'd describe the mind of a shipgirl before manifestation) refused to work against her country and thus forced herself to manifest over her former body, unable to remember or unwilling to speak of who had summoned her.

I think we need to be careful on our assumptions, even if it's now obvious the Abyssals have a command structure and organisation. We aren't even sure if they have a base, or production/summoning centre.

My money's still on "Giant floating fortress-city that links to the waters of the underworld by arcane mechanisms," but until that's confirmed, let's err on the side of "we don't know shit," shall we?

Not... quite. She had actually been converted to a mobile target ship in accordance with the terms of the first London Treaty, and was also operating as a fleet machine gun school as of 7 Dec 41. In fact, she was considered one of the most useful ships in the fleet, and there was consideration of converting the Wyoming (similarly converted into a training ship) into "another Utah" in the late 30s.

“I saw that battle from the top down,” you remind her. “While you were watching Sammy, I was watching you.”

Willie's hat is jittering so hard you're afraid it'll part company with her head. “I-I-I-I-”

“You did pretty damn good, Willie.”

“Iwut-!?”

“Yeah.” You grin. “Willie, close range is when most people lose their nerve in a fight. Destroyers pretty much have to fight at close range - you carry torpedoes to give you a standoff weapon to avoid that, but if you want guaranteed hits you've got to close to six, seven thousand yards maximum, and that's damn near suicide against cruisers in the daytime.”

You see Willie's head nod slightly - she knows this, of course.

“So you see someone closing to point-blank range deliberately, despite having a longer-ranged weapon, well, you know they're out to put blood on the walls. And that usually scares people. That's when Captains turn away and shadow half their guns, long before they could've launched torpedoes. That's when people panic and make mistakes that cost them the battle. And that's half the reason the aggressive ones charge, like Sammy did. But when you're backed into a corner and death is almost upon you, suddenly, you just can't miss.”

Willie surfaces once more, pulling her hat down onto her head with both band-aided hands. “... r-really?”

“Didn't you watch the video of yourself?”

She shakes her head.

“When those torpedo bombers had their last go at Hornet, you really clobbered the hell out of 'em. Now, were you scared for your own life?”

She nods vigorously, and you feel your mouth quirk.

“Well, uh, were you *more* worried about Hornet?”

“Y-yes,” Willie said. “B-because s-she w-w-as s-stuck w-w-with me...”

“Well, that explains it,” you say. “They were going after your carrier - so you protected her. Some destroyers are natural hunters, and others are natural escorts. Looks like you're an escort.”

Willie seems to steady a little. “I-is t-t-hat g-g-ood?”

“Very,” you say, smiling at her. “It means you care about other people, deeply. So deep that when they're in danger you can't not protect them, no matter how scared you are.”

Wille's eyes begin to tear up as her mouth goes wiggly. “B-b-bb-ut-”

“No buts!” you insist. “You proved yourself in that fight, kid. Time to give yourself some credit.”

Willie sniffles, staring at you a bit, then slides out of her chair and carefully walks around the round table. She closes her eyes and barrels over the last few feet in a rush to bury her face in your shirt, hugging you tightly. You ruffle her hair affectionately (she lost her hat in the mad dash) till she calms down a bit. Looking up, you find the entire room staring at you and give them all a look so nasty that some actually look away. Chikuma and Tone are looking at their plates abashedly, but Hayashimo's one visible eye is fixated on you with disconcerting intensity, her pale complexion slightly flushed. Willie's tiny frame stiffens as she hears the hush - whatever else her failings, she can read the atmosphere pretty well. You feel a flash of anger heating your blood, and draw in breath for a sharp rebuke -

- when Lt. Hate walks through the door.

And he is completely, totally covered in spiders.

Within half a second you and Willie have effectively ceased to exist as everyone watches Hate stroll up to the breakfast bar, a veritable army of small spiders swarming up and down his uniform. He serves himself, takes the carafe right out of the coffee pot and carries it all to your table, carefully brushing a few spiders off his ass before plopping down to your left.

“Skipper,” he says amicably, saluting with his carafe before sipping from it.

“AIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-” Willie screams as one of the liberated ahracnids crawls under the table and towards her shoes. She scrambles into your lap before you can protest, her arms wrapped around your neck for protection.

“Oh, sorry about that,” Hate says. “Didn't think of the destroyers.” He begins brushing the spiders off gently with his butterknife, which just causes a swarm of little arachnids to start diffusing through the room. You hear tables and chairs scraping as the weaker-willed shipgirls bug out, so to speak, as you princess-carry a shivering Willie a few feet clear of the table.

Escorts may not be as glamorous as the dash-in-and-fuck-your-shit-up destroyers, but they're about twice as essential. Most ships possess the ability to ruin someone's day, but it takes a special breed to stop someone ELSE from pushing the shit in you want to stay un-pushed.

A bit of both, really. You can trade entire squadrons of tin cans for a capital ship and still come out on top in the tonnage trade. They do make really good escorts, simply because they're a fraction of the tonnage (and thus, cost) of even a Cruiser.

You've got that backwards, actually. DEs like Sammy were meant to protect convoys and maybe hunt subs (which is why she's so famous for the Samar - she was operating WAY outside her design role); DDs like Willie were meant for convoy-escort, yes, but also for supporting cruisers and heavier ships in front-line operations with their AA, torpedoes, and dual-purpose guns.

People overestimate the effectiveness of the kamikazes. During Okinawa the Japanese flew 1,900 kamikaze sorties and had an effectiness rate of 14.7% (26 ships sunk, 182 hits on allied ships, and 97 damaging near misses). The kill ratio for the kamikazes overall was just 1:3.

The entire reason kamikaze was even a thing was because US Naval AAA would shred any bomber before it got anywhere near close enough to do anything. The only way they could even land hits was to strap 500lb bombs onto supermaneuverable Zeroes and ride them all the way in.

Yeah, but again, only way they could even land hits. RADAR-controlled 5"/38 batteries are ridiculously amazing at destroying medium/large aircraft - Remember how Willy D took an entire torpedo bomber squadron out of the air? That thing we just referenced up thread?

That was Every. Single. Destroyer. And they came in *dozens*

Heavy and medium bomber/torpedo bomber aircraft maybe. There is always the odd dive bomber that snuck in through the clouds and they couldn't do much about it.

USN carriers could also suffer massive casualties from kamikazes because they didn't have armoured decks. By comparison British carriers lost practically no one.

Yes. British carriers, to my recollection, were smaller but just about as costly as American ones.

And way harder to repair.

It adds a shitton of weight. Modern carriers don't have a truly armored deck, although it's better than wood.

It took up hanger space that could otherwise be used to store aircraft.

Fair enough. You might have been better served taking it to a KanColle Ideas thread on a more mainstream forum, though - it would have avoided the conflict with planefag's assumed universe.
For instance, readers at SpaceBattles or SufficientVelocity would be able to offer criticism and suggestions on improving the piece and your future writings.

They also contributed fuckall to the war effort because of miniscule air wings. Tu~tu~roo~

Trade-offs. The British preferred a carrier that could take a pounding and keep going, even with a limited contingent. The Americans preferred a carrier that could be repaired quickly and field a lot of aircraft.

In terms of cash no, but in terms of utility yes.

American carriers carried significantly more aircraft and stores than British vessels of similar weight and cost (60-100 planes vs. ~48)

As usual, the Japs did everything the worst possible way, with unarmored flight decks and fully enclosed hangers that made damage control extra challenging. The open hanger decks on American carriers allowed ordnance and flammables to be dumped over the side expediently in case of fire, and also allowed escorting destroyers to spray tons of water directly into the hangers.

>The British preferred a carrier that could take a pounding and keep going, even with a limited contingent. The Americans preferred a carrier that could be repaired quickly and field a lot of aircraft.
Different styles. Consider that the British were fielding navies around the world; Atlantic, CBI theatre, south pacific, European theatre, the Med. They wouldn't always have the luxury of a proper naval repair station, so the ability to take a lickin' and keep on kickin' is a huge bonus.
Contrast to the USA, who enjoyed a *massive* industrial base that was effectively untouchable in WW2. They could afford to take a carrier off the line for a month or two for battle damage because there's three more itching to get in the fight. On top of that, they had more industrial expertise than anyone else in the war; they could get jobs done much quicker than Axis (or even Allied) powers.

>>43342330
No land corridor for invasion, that's how. Neither the Italians nor germans had any capability to make an opposed landing in the face of the rest if the royal navy.
>>
>>43342330
They used aircraft carriers to ferry land based aircraft in. The Hurricane could land on carriers without a tail hook if a weight was put in the tail of the aircraft.

Pls put on a trip so I can filter you.
>>
>>43342412
It's dangerous in the event of a storm. The aircraft could get blown off the deck because they are exposed.

It also exposes the aircraft to damage in the event of a surprise attack.
>>
>>43342434
>Taranto

That was a pearl harbor though. That doesn't count.
>>
>>43342412
If your scouting is good, you're fine. The USN had the advantage of radar-equipped escorts, radio-equipped scouts and continuous combat air patrol. They could have everything cleared off the deck and the fighters already prepping for launch as soon as they came within 30,000-ish yards?
>>
>>43342412
Not very, you can just shove the burning aircraft off the side.

And during the pivotal moment during the battle of Midway, the Japanese were refueling their aircraft bellow decks.

Because they'd spent the last 500 years Getting shit slapped at sea by the British.

But remember, at the start of WW1 The Germans were the second most powerful navy in the world, far ahead of france and the USA.
>>
>>43342436

Italians had some alright ships but never any fuel, French had some alright ships and scuttled most of them in port, Germany never seriously invested in anything but U-Boats because the UK had too much head start.

Not much need to have a big Navy when you have the luxury of being able to just walk to the other guy's country to kill him.
>>
>>43342183
Well it sure didn't save the crew of the USS Franklin.

>807 killed and more than 487 wounded

By comparison the HMS Formidable did have an armoured deck and took an even bigger hit.

>9 dead and 46 wounded

>>43342230
That's the thing, all of those USN carriers that got blown to shit and lost hundreds of crew? Repaired and put back in service (eventually). After the war the British carriers were worn out and essentially unfixable because the hull itself was warped and twisted. But at least they were there and their crews came home alive.

>>43342412
If you get caught with your planes crowded all over the deck and not in the air fighting then you're boned. Even more so if all of them are fueled up and fully armed, see above with the USS Franklin.
>>
>>43342466
How did the bombs light the anti-ship ammunition on fire then?
>>
>>43342473
I know. I'm trying to get more tripfags to bait more hooks.
>>
>>43342436
>Was there any nation in mainland Europe that was semi-competent at naval combat?
No need. Mainland Europe has direct land invasion routes between most of the countries, and the rest is just commerce raiding for/against countries that have colonies. You don't need fleets upon fleets of battleships to sink freighters, which is what Uncle Dönitz based the KM around.
>>
>>43342337
Indeed. Lots of factors influenced the designs decisions of both nations.

Still, they had overall good to decent carriers... unlike the Japanese.

>>43342419
You had your fair warning a long time ago. We helped when it was clear that the Taidanii had lost their heads.

>>43342454
Indeed.

>>43342466
Though as this gentleman points out, in battle there were less disadvantages.

>>43342477
Yep. Think of every Continental war the British got involved in?

All of them were aimed at putting down someone getting the resources and fleet strength to threaten their domination of the seas.
>>
>>43342436
Germany, but in WW2 they only had a few ships. they were outnumbered by well over 10 to 1. Their most successful surface combatants were surface raiders that were out of port when the war started or had managed to get to sea without being sunk.

Hitler also wasn't very fond of Raeder or the Kriegsmarine. He described them as a "communist navy," IIRC.
>>
I wish there was a game that allowed me to control all these little factors, like open hangers or closed hangers, armored decks or not, parking on top. HOI 3 is becoming woefully inadequate.
>>
>>43342498
>How did the bombs light the anti-ship ammunition on fire then?

By punching through the deck and detonating inside the ship, which was why the bombs were fuzed with time-delay fuzes. None of the Japanese carriers had armored decks, so even general-purpose bombs could penetrate the decks fairly easily. The US would later switch to armor-piercing bombs that'd offer better performance against warships.

Also, the Japanese hangar decks were fully enclosed, which drastically increased the blast pressures of the bombs and contained all the highly volatile avgas fumes. In addition the quick re-arming of the B5Ns for anti-ship attack left the deck littered with torpedoes and bombs waiting to be taken back below and stored in the magazines; there just weren't enough ordinance dollies or bomb/torpedo lifts to manage.

The HOI2/AoD mod C.O.R.E. lets you control Armored/not armored and purpose built/not purpose built planes.

That might be the closest you are going to get.
