You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

You sit at the old porch with your feet dangling an inch from the waters, a vast expanse of shadow beneath you. The sky is grey and unfeeling, but you can discern it from the wall of mist that waits beyond the lake, where the world trails away into nothingness. You can’t see the sun, but you know it’s out – you can feel its warmth suffusing you, lifting you up, hear the crickets and the birds and the worms of the earth awakening to its touch. Your sister sits next to you, reading.

You drift, thinking of things, not thinking of things. The horns atop your head blaze with the heat of the sun – fire the colour of lapis, smoke the colour of malachite. You roll your shoulders and let your head hang back, let the sun and the moon colour your cheeks. You feel calm.

“The whole world will be your enemy,” Reads your sister, her eyes roaming the pages, long white hair swaying in the breeze. “Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.”

The front door creaks as Joyce comes out onto the porch, and you feel everything beginning to crack and burn at its edges, and the thing beside you seems to expand – its veiny, near-translucent hands, its silver-frayed hair, its shining eyes. It looks to you and you feel incredibly, indescribably small.

“Your people.”

“Our people.”

MY PEOPLE.

You feel your breath catch in your lungs as you awaken.

It takes a moment for you to comprehend the softness that surrounds you fully. You’re in the bedroom to Moon Knight’s safehouse, under a warm blanket, a pillow beneath your head. Laura breathes in and out beside you, her head nestled against your shoulder.

God. What a dream.

You remember that afternoon. You were twelve, you think. And it was you reading. Or your mother, reading to both of you? You guess you brain couldn’t handle the fugue of time, and inserted a narrator where you couldn’t. Weird as hell, but at least you dreamt of something other than the Scar for once.

Yawning, you glance down at your wrist.

>Present Time: 09:33 AM

Late. Later than you’d like, anyway. You never did end up calling the Phantom back last night, though, when you look down at the sleeping form beside you, you don’t particularly blame yourself.

Careful not to awaken Laura, you inch your way out of bed, rummaging through the clothes strewn about the floor for your phone. You can’t help but be a bit disorientated by the lack of solidity in your surroundings – compared to the station, this place is warm, soft, gentle. It feels almost alien.

Finding your phone, you call the Phantom. She picks up quickly – too quickly, actually. You were hoping for a few more seconds of ringtone so you could compose yourself.

“Jonathan? I trust last night went well.”

“Yeah.” You answer, nodding to yourself. “It went pretty peachy. You wanted me to call you about something?”

“That’s right.” You here her get up, make her way across the room she’s in. You can almost – almost tell where she is. Carpeted floor, high ceiling, low echoes. “I rather interesting job has come up. One you might be interested in.”

A job? You wonder how much time you have for heavy lifting. There’s the station to sort out, and this stuff with the Triads, and –

“As you know, we occasionally find ourselves contacted concerning employment that is not, strictly speaking, detective work.” She says, taking your hesitance as a que to continue. “This is one of those cases. Our contact wishes to see a particular piece of stolen property returned to him. A collector’s item, apparently. What I thought might interest you is the list of suspected thieves we’ve received from him. It reads like a who’s who of the most powerful of New York’s criminal syndicates. There are names here from the Bratva, Mr. Negative’s Triads, from Silvermane’s family… people of interest to you, it seems.”

You pause, thinking. Those are people of interest. You could take this job and potentially kill two birds with one stone.

“Who’s the client?”

If you’re going into this, you think you’d like to do so with a bit more information than the Phantom seems willing to divulge.

“A Mr. Wesley.” She says, in a vaguely amused tone of voice. “As you might imagine, he’s not been particularly forthcoming regarding his first name. He’s given me a means of contacting him, and that’s enough. It’s Agency policy to respect our clients’ wishes for anonymity.” There is a brief pause, and then: “When possible, of course.”

Whenever possible. That sounds vaguely foreboding.

“What does he want?”

“A very old, very expensive item. It has a particular nature that a few of our other employees have more experience with, so you’ll be working with one of them.” She sighs. “I’d pair you with Remy, but, alas, his location remains a mystery. I don’t expect the job to be easy, but it is slated to pay rather well compared to the work you’re used to.”

You do like the sound of that.

What’s this feeling? It’s sorta like… déjà vu.

“This thing, it’s not… it’s not some old tablet thing, is it?”

The line is quiet for a moment. Then:

“…Jonathan, we did agree that you would disclose the full nature of your abilities when this partnership began. If you’ve been hiding an ability to read minds, that would”–

“No, no, I can’t read minds.” You interject hurriedly. “I just, uh, took on a similar job, not long ago.”

“Oh?” There’s a purr in those syllables. “That is interesting.”

Yeah. You’d say so. Still, it’s an opportunity.

“Yep. I’ll take it, though. The job.”

“Excellent.” You here a pen clicking in the background. She’s writing something down? “I’ll be in touch. We’ll just be doing a little work at the office to narrow down this list to a few likely names and addresses.”

“Cool.”
>>
>(2/2)

She hangs up, and you almost let yourself collapse back on the bed, a long sigh emptying your lungs.

Ancient Egyptian tablets, huh? You guess they’re in vogue nowadays. Either that, or it’s the same piece of rock, and it’s been stolen away again. You hope not – that would increase the likelihood that Creeper is involved with the client. Though, that said, some small part of you does get a kick out of the idea of Creeper unknowingly financing you through the Agency.

You put it out of your mind and head into the living room, where Moon Knight’s bag full of goodies lies abandoned on the carpet.

On closer inspection, you find that most of the tools are standardized. There are these stark white fighting sticks that go with each outfit – two to each. You notice a tiny switch on the side of one, and push it down, finding yourself distinctly unsurprised when an arc of electricity flares up along the weapon’s tip. One set has no built-in taser, but you’re willing to bet that it’s conductive. Yours, probably. There are a collection of similar, slightly thicker items – a little experimentation with them reveals them to be grappling hooks (and costs Moon Knight’s fakey apartment a lamp).

It’s cool stuff.

It doesn’t take much to rouse Laura from slumber. While you need to be dragged kicking and screaming into the waking world, she seems almost grateful to be awake and alert. You guess she just doesn’t like feeling vulnerable. You make a promise of hot cocoa before hefting up Moon Knight’s bag and making your way out.

The morning would be grey if it weren’t red. It must’ve rained for a while at night, because you can taste the leftovers of it in the air. Puddles linger in a few of the cracked pavestones that dot the streets.

Being without a shirt, you have to stay out of sight. It’s not exactly hard for you, but it does mean that you can’t really buy anything. Laura picks up a hot drink and some falafels at a nearby stand while you pilfer a few copies of today’s papers. You’d leave a few dollars, but honestly, you’re not sure you can afford to.

The headlines don’t surprise you.

“MUTANT SQUATTERS INFEST OUR CITY.” “MUTANTS AMONG US.” “MUTIES IN THE RUINS.”

That last one is particularly galling. Not unexpected, though – you wouldn’t expect much else from Murdoch and his minions. You wouldn’t say you’re seeing full-blown panic yet, but most papers are focusing on the apparent failure of authorities to register you and your friends. It’s nice to see a few articles questioning how things have been allowed to come to this, but they’re few and far between. The real focus seems to be on criticizing everyone – from Mutant Control to the NYPD – for not responding quickly enough to the situation.

Fuck.

Well, shit.

You’re tempted to find a nice, big brick and tape some dumb message to it, like “register this!” or whatever, and then just chuck it through someone’s window. But that wouldn’t really solve anything, would it? It’d just convince one more gullible soul that ‘dem muties be the werk ah da devil Cletus!

Fuck these people. Sometimes you wish the river would just tear itself free and rush through the city. Drown every single fucking one of them.

You head back to the Scar, leaving a trail of discarded newspapers in your wake, each one less encouraging than the last. That Clark guy wrote a good article, you guess. He brought up that the Red Cross was there an’ stuff. You noticed that most of them were avoiding that detail.

There is a tangible sense of tension at the edge of the Scar. People look worried. You spy more than one crowd of flatscans that have taken it upon themselves to roam the border, supposedly to keep any meddlin’ muties out of their gosh darn homes and in their gosh darn places.

Disgusting.

Eventually, you trail your way into the station, setting the duffel bag down in a long, exaggerated motion. You just feel tired after all that shit.

You get a few stares. It’s Layla that comes up to you first, asking what’s in the bag and how much of it is edible.

“In a bit, yeah?”

Yes, I know this. But there's a difference between training people who want to be trained and to fight, and pressuring people to fight who may not want to. Layla is what, like 14? And we're seriously talking about turning her into our personal army to gun people down en masse?

Not everyone has to be able to fight. There are other ways to contribute to this community, so long as those who can and are willing to fight are good enough to defend those who can or will not.
>>
>>43354892
depends on the sentinel, I'd wager.
>>
>>43354859
Shit that can be dealt with so long as we stick close to the human population.
Then its just normal guys with guns, easy to deal with. If the exclusion zone gets raided we make it costly as sin while everyone evacuates, wait for them to fuck off and then move right back in.

Meantime we need to save cash and buy realestate in the zone while our presence devalues it.

You let yourself slump down at the entrance to the station.

Around you, there is a collective buzz of activity. It’s never quiet here now. Someone’s always chatting to someone. Someone’s always snoring. Someone’s always trying to get a fire started. You sigh.

“Hey, Layla. You mind grabbing the others for a minute?”

The cocks her head to one side, circling the bag suspiciously. “Why?”

“It’s a surprise.”

There is a moment of consideration on her face, where she’s rather obviously considered one-Layla-mobbing you, but eventually she shrugs, splitting off in several directions while one of her remains behind to be an annoying little gnat.

One by one, she finds them. They sit down in a circle near the stairs, Tyler looking extremely uncomfortable, while his sister looks… present. There is a long silence.

“Okay, so…” How does this go, exactly? Do you tell them a masked psychopath got you a bunch of hurty toys to smack people around with and, gee golly, you’re just itching to share it all with your buds? Do you tell that that said masked psychopath knew about them? “…I got some stuff for you guys.”

You unzip the duffel bag to a chorus of ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ – most of them originating from one or more copy of Layla.

“…The hell is all this?” Says Noriko, her voice incredulous, as she fishes out one of the masks. “We’re superheroes now?”
>>
>>43355128

>and all she was doing was murdering racists.

Which is, y'know, still fucking illegal. And she wasn't just murdering them, she was painting the room with their viscera. I think that kind of justifies some excessive force.

>(2/2)

“…Doesn’t look too superhero-y.” Notes Lucas.

“We’re not superheroes.” You confirm, noticing that a few heads are turning your way. People around the station are wondering what’s up. “This stuff is armoured, though, and it’ll protect our identities. And we might need it soon.”

“Looks a little grim.” Says Gaby, withdrawing the slightly elongated mask with the thin, straight horns, pressing it to her face experimentally. “…How do I look?”

“Spooky.” Says Mildred, before you can reply, the word seeming out-of-place on her lips. She’s still looking elsewhere – you’re not sure her eyes and have been on Gaby once. “Spook, spooks…”

Another brief silence settles in the wake of her reply. You cough awkwardly.

“Look, this stuff is weird, obviously, but I’d recommend getting familiar with it. The Scar is getting dangerous. The city is getting dangerous.” You pause. “People are getting dangerous. We can use this stuff. Now…”

Deep breath.

Striding over to the fire, you lift up a pair of pots resting beside the stove, hefting them over the head. Steeling yourself, you slam them together – gently, at first, so as not to turn them both into hunks of useless junk – once, twice, thrice. The sound echoes through the station, each collision louder and sharper than the last.

Slowly but surely, all eyes turn in your direction.

You feel your breath freeze in your lungs. Your stomach twists like fire and ice, telling you that you’re not for here, that you should be somewhere else, somewhere dark. Invisible.

You push through it, and clear your throat loudly, letting the pots fall to your sides.

“Hey, everyone.”

They’re looking at you. A few weeks ago, you’d have withered under this kind of scrutiny. Curled up and died like some dumb tiny animal. You feel bigger now, though – hell, you are bigger. And more than that – more of something else.

“I figure we need to have a little chat.” You say, slowly, doing your best to affect a neutral tone. “We’ve got to share this space now, so we need to watch out for one another. And there need to be rules.”

You spot a girl near one of the pillars roll her one remaining eye. Ugh, ignore, ignore…

“Fist, though, we gotta talk about outside. New York is starting to realize we’re here.” There are whispers. You wait a moment for them to die down. “People are getting scared. Angry, probably. Could be that soon we’ll be seeing some kind of action against us.”

You trail off, thinking. While you’re arranging your thoughts, a young woman near the side of the tracks, her pale skin dotted with traces of glowing blue-green crystal, raises her voice:

“Okay.” Her voice is curt, serious. She doesn’t sound especially scared. “What do we do about that?”

You kind of want to say that the flatscans need you guys and you need to prove it – because it’s pretty much true, if the Avengers and all the other supertypes stay gone. But you’re becoming increasingly convinced that nothing short of Jesus himself descending to preach the merits of mutanthood could prove that. And even then, it’s shaky.

“First things first, we need to start mapping out these tunnels.” You’ve been meaning to do this for a while, actually – ever since you first arrived here. “We need to know where we can go if something happens. The sewers, the subways – they connect everything in this city. But they’re useless to us if we don’t know where they lead. Knowing where we can go and where we can’t gives us more space, too.”

People nod. Most just stare, though. Should you say you’re looking for volunteers?

A hand rises. It’s some skinny, pale creature of a young man with dark red eyes and shaggy black hair. His wrists are circled with tattoos depicting abstract, vaguely Nordic dragons – Jormungandr and the like. Half goth, half metal. Goth metal? Is that a thing?

Your sis would’ve known.

“Yeah?”

“Yeah, so, like…” He has a surprisingly deep voice. “…I’ve gone for a few walks down there. Loads of tunnels. I think me an’ Blake wouldn’t mind looking around…”

You have absolutely no idea who ‘Blake’ is. This guy just made shit a lot easier for you, though.

“Great.” You pause, thinking. “It’d be great if we could get a few people together to chart a section of the tunnels every day. Anyone who wants to help can help.”

Another hand goes up. This time it’s a tanned girl with long, thin horns.

“Uh, I dunno where she is, but Alani said she heard mumbling back there. I think there might be more people living down here or something.”

That is concerning.

“Good to know…”

“Okay, so, if you want to help with the tunnel stuff, see me after this.”

Man, this feels weird. You feel weird.

“Second up, food.” That gets a bit more response. You thought it might. “Right now, we’re scraping by. I’m betting a few of you are eating with the guys up top, in their tents. That’s fine. But we need to be able to make sure we can do without them. Which means we need to get our hands on our own food.”

You can see this turning into an issue. You can’t feed thirty or so people by your lonesome. What if the Red Cross guys just up and leave one day? Move on to the next hot humanitarian crisis? Where does that leave most of these people?

“I’ve got a… a way to grow stuff quickly.” You think you’ll decline to mention the blood. At least for now. “I’ve been trying to grow food down here, but I need more light. If any of you can help with that, it’d be appreciated. Other than that…”

If JJ can do it, why not them. Most of them can sort of fit in with a few tricks, like JJ used to, and then go hand out newspapers or a similar simple job.

Full mugga. It's in our culture, our blood, our DNA. Stealing is what makes us mutants.

>>[ ] Until you’ve got something self-sustaining running, people should rely on the Red Cross.

Also don't steal, and don't get caught, and don't show that you are mutant when caught. People are bout to lynch all mutants. If incidents happen it be really, bad for all of us.

No. Because any increased activity or press on gang activity near the scar is a bad fucking idea.

We want the area out of the news.
>>
Before thinking of stealing, we need to know those tunnels, otherwise we send people out to face the anti-mutant gangs prowling around us. Since no one else seems to have a plan to deal with them we might as well avoid them alltogether.
>>
>>43357001
That area is going to be in the news if you like it or not. Its more a question of how to try twist the publicity.
>>
>>43357013
>You spy more than one crowd of flatscans that have taken it upon themselves to roam the border, supposedly to keep any meddlin’ muties out of their gosh darn homes and in their gosh darn places.
What part of that says gangs?
>>
>>43357059
Large groups of people roaming around the boarders together being angry and shouty.

Pretty much translate to a gang of people to a police officer. Or a mob. Either way, its still something you want to disperse before it gets violent.
>>
“…the charity people are your best bet at getting a hot meal right now. They seem alright”– if a little cold –“and they haven’t given us any reason to distrust ‘em, so for now they’re an option. What isn’t an option is going out and taking shit like the Corsairs are doing. That is gonna bring Mutant Control down on us like a fucking hammer.”

You pause, looking out across the assembled faces. Some look tellingly ashamed at the mention of thievery. You don’t doubt that mostly everyone here has stolen once or twice – just to survive, if nothing else.

Some of you have done worse.

But you don’t want to shit where you eat, and right now, this is where you eat.

“I promise, I am trying to get something self-sustaining up.” You say. “Until then, Red Cross are good enough.”

Nobody says anything. The silence gnaws at you.

Speaking of the Corsairs, it is unlikely we can get them to stop stealing, but we could dissuade them to steal from places AWAY from the Scar. They could use the Tunnel network we map to raid stores at midnight and retreat underground to avoid heat. So long as they give us the Cerberos(as in, watchdogs of the demiworld) gang a share of the loot

This feels like it’s almost over. Like you don’t have much left to say. Then again:

“Last but not least, we need to keep each other safe. And that means learning to control our powers.” There are more than a few testy stares shared at the mention of that. You don’t doubt that most of you have no clue how your powers really work. Most of these guys have probably been too busy surviving to sit down and get a grip on everything. “We can’t have people just shooting whatever everywhere. You learn to control your powers or you leave.”

Harsh, but fair. You’re not dying because some lazy fuckwit couldn’t be bothered to get a check on his eye lasers or his exploding spit or whatever the shit it is these people can do.

Breathing in deeply, you move on:

“Some of you probably know about the attack a while back. And about the weirdos running around the Exclusion Zone, peddling filth.” You put emphasis on that last word. You swear you almost hear your voice crackle, like fire. “There are a lot of people trying to put a stop to that stuff, and we could always use more help. If you want to help, it’ll mean getting fit and learning to handle yourself. Feel up to it? You can talk to…”

You lean back slightly, gesturing to your friends.

“…Noriko about it.”

She shoots you a surprised look.

You look over the assembled faces. A few of them look restless, like they’re waiting for you to finally sit down and release them. Others – others look eager. Eager for what, you can’t say.

“That’s it. That’s all.”

You feel your chest finally deflate.

Maybe there’s a tangible change in the air. Maybe it’s all just you.

Either way, you’re relieved as all hell when you feel their attention gradually turn away from you. The sudden flood of chatter fills your ears and for a moment you can pretend that it’s all Dutch to you, pretend that you can’t pick out the whats and the hows and the nitty grittys from their whispered words.

You slump back beside the fire, letting its warmth roll over you. You feel a soft hand touch yours, and close your eyes as Laura’s fingers etch their way along yours, across the border of your knuckles, up to your wrist.

“Thanks.”

You don’t get long to savour the feeling. Soon enough, you find yourself watching the gothmetal creature from before approaching you, a spring in his step. He pauses for a moment when he notices Laura and her enhanced tactical handholding, but apparently, his mutant power is being unable to fully read the mood, and he perseveres.

“Hey, dude.”

“Hi.” Dude. Dude sounds a lot less dudesome when other people say it.

“So, like, I was talking to a few others about the tunnel stuff…”

“Right.” You sigh under your breath, heaving yourself up. “I was hoping to get on with that, actually. If there is someone down here with us we should know about ‘em. What’s your name?”

“Vlad.”

There is no fucking way that is this guy’s name. He sounds like he’s from Oregon or somewhere.

Well, you guess he does look sorta Dracula. If Dracula were reincarnated as an American teen with parental issues. You wonder if it’s a mutant thing. Maybe he has fangs? You don’t see any, but maybe they pop out or something?

“Alright then, Vlad, let’s get this together.” You could ask for his real name. But who cares? You guys might as well be vampires anyway, living down here in the gloom. If he wants to play pretend, more power to him. Maybe it makes things more tolerable. “You don’t happen to know that Alani chick, do you…?”

It doesn’t take long. A few people are itching to stretch their legs, and people don’t take much convincing when they’re like that. Soon enough you’re waiting at the end of one of the tunnels with Laura and Gaby beside you, the latter humming softly to herself – something you vaguely recognize actually. Orchestral, maybe. Mildred volunteered too, oddly enough, and most of the time you spent preparing was actually more about her convincing her brother that she’d be okay. She perches along the tracks, her unblinking eyes seeming to perfectly reflect the darkness of the tunnel.

“Heya, dudes!”

You turn around at the sound of Vlad’s voice, your eyes immediately straying to his companion.

Alani – Alani Ryan, as she introduces herself – is a thin shadow of a girl with a figure like a bunch of sticks and a healthy tan to her skin. Her face and much of her arms are covered in strange, twisting patterns of discoloured flesh. You’re willing to bet they extend all the way under her torn hoodie and her jeans, across the better part of her body.

She seems… shy, pretty much.

But she thought to bring a flashlight, which is extremely cool.

“Right, then.” You hop down from the side of the platform, onto the tracks. The dark of the tunnel yawns out in front of you. “Let’s do this.”

Hell, people think Supes is a comic book character in verse, he could be very real in verse however.

It's like how there are thing going on in Russia right now that are years ahead of us, but we don't know about it. Similarly there is shit in the U.S. that is leagues ahead of something they have, but they don't know it. Even in the modern world where information flows like a plague in a whorehouse we still don't hear about everything.

tl;dr who fuckken knows?
