Become The Vampire Quest 4

You finish your coffee. It's taken you a few moments to properly appreciate the situation you find yourself in. For one, you're kind of disappointed. Samantha Wolfe? Werewolf. Angie? Probably short for Angela, literally an angel of death. This school takes "hiding in plain sight" too literally for your tastes. Then again, Angie is probably mocking it, and the Wolfe family might just not give a fuck about hiding. You set your mug down slowly.

"Is Vanessa going to stay dead?"

Angie smiles softly.

"The dead tend to stay that way. It's part of why it's death and not a coma."

You nod slightly.

"It's just that I heard a rumor about vampires being able to ressurect people. If there's any truth to that..."

Angie laughs a little bit and walks over to the coffee jug, getting herself a fresh mug.

"They wouldn't waste the resources. They'd have to bring her back, turn her again, and then bind her to the family again. It wouldn't be worth their time. You're not the first person around here to kill a vampire, don't worry. Unless she was the cornerstone of the family, she's staying dust."

You smile to yourself. Well, that answers another question. You decide against telling her your story right now in case she doesn't take kindly to your attempt to bring your parents back, and switch to another question.

"So I guess you don't hate vampires then. I was considering becoming one for a few reasons, like being able to protect myself more easily here. What do you think of that?"
>>
Angie downs the entire cup of coffee at once and sets the mug down. Duty calls hard, huh.

"I don't hate vampires, and if you become one I won't hold it against you. But I'll caution you against it. I can keep you on the clock while you're human. Cross that line, and you won't have a shred of protection from me. We can still be poker buddies, but I won't be your aegis."

You nod slightly and rise to your feet.

"Fair enough. One more question. I-"

You stop short as you watch Angie pass out, slumping to the floor and snoring softly. You walk over, inspect her briefly, and haul her to her desk. She probably looks so creepy all the time because she sleeps in awkward positions and messes up her hair and make-up. You spare her one last glance and head for the door.

You could head to your dorm and see of your roommate has turned up yet, or maybe head into town to pick something up for tonight. You don't exactly have any fancy clothes or party attire. You could check the library for clues about vampirism or something. Or you could just wander aimlessly with your hall pass ready and practice evading the hall monitors.

The rules:
Best of three rolls, critical threat on a 20, confirmed if another roll after mod is 20 or higher. Your modifier is the Stat being rolled+ a relevant Skill. You can decide which skill to apply if I don't provide one or you have a better idea. If no one applies one, no skill will be added on. If you don't have a logical reason to apply a skill, don't do it.
Critical fails are at least two 1s on a roll. May expand this later to increase shenanigans.
Success is on a sliding scale and is situational; there is no set DC to target. Some things are easier than others. Use your head.

You head back to your dorm room, sneaking through the halls. You're almost spotted a few times along the way, but you manage to evade whatever sorcery makes the hall monitors so perceptive. Either that or they just don't care enough about you, like they know you have nowhere to be. You're not really sure what the rules are for that yet.

You make it back to your room unscathed, but when you reach the door to your room you notice something odd. You turned the light off when you left, but you can see a dull glow under the door. There's also some pretty obnoxious j-rock music playing on the other side of the door, although it isn't incredibly loud.

You open the door a crack and spot someone sitting on the couch playing... you don't know the name off the top of your head, but it's an MMO game of some sort. Whoever they are, they've got long gray hair tied back in a ponytail. Wonderful. You've got a Japanophile roommate. They don't seem to have noticed you yet though.

>How the hell did you get that from having long gray hair?

If our room-mate is male the specifically mentioning the long hair usually means he's a trap unless it's female or a neckbeard
>>
>>43369844
Or it means they're just someone that prefers to keep their hair long and it's the most identifiable characteristic from the angle we saw them from? It's not an uncommon practice.

Neckbeard seems like it would be more likely from those two options anyway, what with the weeaboo shit and obscure MMO.
>>
You head for your side of the room to avoid messing up whatever your roommate is doing. From the way their fingers are rattling against the keyboard, it seems complicated. You sit on your bed and watch the game for a bit before turning your attention to your roommate when... she? When she yells at the screen.

"Come on! Where is our healer, we're getting slaughtered! No, don't pull that towards me!"

The screen goes dark as her avatar dies, and she yanks off her headset and tosses it down. Her gaze slowly drifts towards you, and she turns bright red and screams, throwing a pillow at you and covering herself. She's not naked, but she's wearing a long T-shirt that covers down to her knees and nothing else that you can see.

"Help! Intruder!"

You dodge the pillow and offer a smile.

"Hey there, roomie. I'm Oliver, pleasure to meet you."

She disconnects her hand at the wrist and you hear a sound like something charging up. Tech golem, right. She points her forearm at you, which slowly turns into some kind of barrel. She pauses for a few moments and looks you over.

"Oliver... The one who enrolled late...?"

You nod.

"That's the one. And me. That's me."

She reattaches her hand.

"If you keep sneaking around I'll shoot you on principle... Pervert."

She slips off the couch and heads for her side of the room.

"I'm Meliora. Mind turning around? I don't plan on sitting around like this in front of you in case you leer at me while I'm talking."

You nod. Regardless of whether or not you're going to look, you know better than to say you won't. She huffs a bit like she doesn't believe you, and heads for her closet.

You avert your gaze and get comfortable, looking at the ceiling. There's some clicking and clattering for a moment, and then rustling.

"So, you're a gamer, an android... anything I should know, Meliora? I mean, if we're going to be roommates then we should get along, get to know each other."

More rustling.

"I'm a prototype combat golem designed for subduing and eliminating monsters. My dad is one of the science teachers. If you tell anyone they'll never find your body. And you can stop staring at the ceiling now. You look like you're stoned or stupid."

You look over at her. She's wearing the usual girl's uniform, except she has a holster at her hip with a pistol in it, and some sort of small metal creature perched on her shoulder. It chirps at you, leaping from her shoulder and hovering around you. Meliora sighs softly.

Do we have her father for science?
Either way compare schedules and see what classes we have that are matching. It'll be a good idea to study together.
>>
>>43370505
Why would we admit any of that in a monster school? Are you fucking kidding me?
>>
>>43370541
She was open with us, and we've already demonstrated we aren't a clever man. It's perfectly legit.

Besides, we're roomies. She'll find out eventually. Better to tell her up front than have her find out later.
>>
>>43370505

>>43370517

>>
>>43370575
man I don't... it just doesn't seem like a good idea to tell people you just met about that.
It's going to get us killed.
>>
>>43370541
Because she'll figure it out anyways?
>>
>>43370598
maybe if she looks through our shit, or we just bluff that we brought weapons for our own protection.
Like how she has a pistol and arm cannon. This school is full of murderers.
>>
>>43370597
Well, she did just tell us she's an experimental combat gynoid. The super smart robot figured it was a good idea.

And again, she will find out. Roomies are like that. They learn things, it's better to get all the really personal shit out in the open now so it doesn't become a problem later.
>>
>>43370628
be prettty cool if we had a bloodborne weapon
>>
>>43370628
What sort of not-hunter human has stakes, holy water, a crossbow, and a silver cross for personal protection. Besides, from our demeanor she probably already knows we're a hunter.
>>
>>43370541
She just admitted to be a combat android built specifically to kill monsters. She's hardly going to tell anyone, and starting out honestly isn't a bad idea for a relationship
>>
I say keep the mystique. No need to spill everything upfront all the time.
Besides, we aren't even actually a hunter, we just know how to put a vampire down. Our end goal IS to become a vampire and res our parents, after all.
>>
>>43370651
Unless that was a lie, or her creator considers hunters to be monsters.
>>
>>43370660
It never says we are a hunter.

>>43370667
That's the dumbest reasoning I've ever heard.
>>
>>43370667
If she thinks humans are monsters, then she is going to kill us regardless of what species we are. And why would she lie. I can't think of an advantage in claiming you are built to kill a large amount of the school's population. Like what is the advantage she gains from lying?

guess some people want to throw subtlety out the window.

All she's said so far is that was what she was designed for. Maybe her dad is a renegade scientist that stole his robo-daughteru from the government and undid most of that programming and enrolled her in monster school because regular schools would be even less safe due to government pursuit.
>>

>>
You chuckle a bit.

"Cute little guy. What is he? Your pet?"

Meliora nods.

"Canis Minor, my hunting partner."

Canny chirps and lands on your head, shifting slightly to stay balanced at you move. Meliora rolls her eyes.

"Canny, this is why I don't take you on walks..."

Canny chirps quietly, and Meliora face palms.

"Anyway... So who are you? You aren't reading as a monster, but you've got a sample on you. A hunter?"

You shake your head.

"My dad was. I'm just proficient in self-defense."

Meliora nods slightly.

"More than proficient."

She points to your sleeve, where your stake sits concealed from view.

"You killed a vampire. Nice work."

She cracks a smile. She looks cute when she's smiling and not aiming her gun at your head. You reach up and pat Canny.

"Is that why you told me what you are? As a warning or something?"

Meliora nods, and Canny chirps merrily as you pet him.

"Monsters are tricky. And if you were one, then I'd rather you knew now so we can avoid complications when you see me punch a werewolf or something."

You briefly imagine Meliora and Sammy fighting. You can't decide if it's hot or hilarious. Maybe both. Canny hovers back over to Meliora, and she hugs him to her chest, petting him and smiling softly at the little machine. You smirk a bit.
>>
"So are you cutting class or what?"

Meliora frowns at you.

"I'm cutting class with my dad. He's a moron and embarrasses me all the time..."

You nod a bit.

"I can relate. When I didn't believe my dad was a hunter I tried to invite him to career day. It, uh... yeah. Anyway, what classes are you taking? Maybe we can study together?"

Meliora rolls her eyes.

"I'm in the top tier of each course. I could tutor you, but that's assuming you're quick enough to match my pace. I don't plan to waste time helping an idiot."

You're starting to wonder if maybe her dad is the Japanophile, and she's his tsundere robot daughter. The implications are terrifying. You hope you don't have his class.

You nod noncommittally.

You pause. You're not quite sure what you mean, actually.

You get changed, swapping your uniform out for some casual attire. It occurs to you that Meliora is about to cut all her remaining classes. She probably has some robot thing to deal with that, either that or she'll just download the coursework later or something. As you finish pulling on your clothes you turn around to find Meliora looking right at you, wearing a white dress with a slit along one side so she can reach her gun. Canny is hovering beside her, the little machine's eyes now the same color as Meliora's.

"Ready to go?"

You grab your backpack and sift through it briefly. It's mostly empty now, but you've still got some holy water and a spare stake that you didn't pack away yet.

"Yeah, I'm good. What about you?"

Meliora grabs a small shoulder bag and nods.

"Ready."

Her eyes glow softly as she opens the door, and Canny flies off. Meliora glances at you, then turns and walks out. You grab your bag and follow behind her. She doesn't wait for you to catch up, but then, you're in no hurry to. You keep your eyes peeled as you exit the dorm and head for the main gate. You don't know how many people know what Meliora is, and you'd rather not be directly associated with a known monster hunter right now.

Once you pass the gate Meliora turns and heads for the bus station. It's a pleasant and sunny afternoon, so minimal chance of vampires. Well, you hope at least. Meliora stands by the sign, and you take a moment to look at the schedule. There are eight bus stops around the outer rim of town, and an inner loop of four stops. Buses come every ten minutes, and they're free for students. You grab your ID from your wallet and check your watch.
>>
"It's pointless, you know."

You look at Meliora, who is looking at your watch.

"You could set your watch by the buses. Checking your watch won't help. Be patient."

You open your mouth to retort when you notice movement in your peripheral vision and hear the faint hiss of the bus braking. Meliora turns and gets on.

"Waiting on you now."

You get on and follow her towards a set of seats. She sits down, but when you move to sit beside her she points to the row of seats across from her.

"Proximity makes me uncomfortable. It's bad enough having an overbearing father, I don't need a roommate invading my personal space."

You take the seat opposite her and smile a bit.

"You're a real ray of sunshine, huh."

Meliora huffs and looks out the window.

"Please. I don't have any need for pleasantries."

You nod slightly.

"Maybe. But you feel things, right? Happiness, embarrassment..."

Meliora shoots you a glare, but you continue.

"So you have a need to look out for your emotional wellbeing."

Meliora narrows her eyes.

"Emotions are distracting. Being happy feels nice, but it isn't practical. Anger obscures the mission, sadness ruins concentration, and fear is unnecessary."

You chuckle just a bit.

"And embarrassment?"

Meliora leans forward suddenly and punches the seat two inches to the right of your head. She looks frustrated more than angry, like there's a little wall she's built up around her view of things and you just keep poking at it. When you look a little closer, she actually looks afraid.

"Your anger is showing. Look, I need your help. Let me help you. You're not a heartless machine, even if you try to be."

Meliora sits back down and looks at you, before turning back to the window.

"My father must have picked you as my roommate on purpose just to annoy me... It's working..."

She gives you a brief glance.

"I'll consider it, if it turns out you're not a complete idiot."

Close enough. You look outside and spot the next bus stop, not too far ahead. Some people are already getting ready to get off, so you do the same. Meliora remains seated though. She doesn't stand until the bus comes to a full stop, following you out of the bus. You've arrived at the shopping district, full of fancy, expensive stores you can barely afford to shop at.

A quick look around tells you all you need to know about making money here. You can get an after school job, or take to picking the pockets of the unaware. One is much more risky, but more rewarding for the time invested. The either is more of a time sink, but it'll help you make some friends while you're at it, though you might not be able to join a club depending on the schedule. Which will it be? Theft, which gives you such a rush but has more lethal consequences if you pick the wrong pocket, or being a wage slave just to get pocket money?

You look around at the stores for a few moments and take stock of what you can and can't afford. You're pretty well-off, all things considered, but this? This is a little bit out of your league right now. Maybe you can get a part time job or steal or something... But that's a long term plan, and you need a short term solution to your problem. You turn to Meliora and smile.

“So... These shops are a little pricey for me. I don't think I'll be able to buy clothes from here without breaking the bank. Know anywhere cheaper around here that I could go to?”

Meliora nods slightly.

“Sure, if you don't mind a walk.”

You shrug a bit, and she seems to take that as a yes, leading you along the street. The shops become no less gaudy and expensive at first, but the prices do dip a little as you go. She comes to a halt and gestures vaguely to the shops, smiling.

“Here. This should be fine, right?”

You take another quick look around. Still too expensive. You can't shake the feeling that she's just screwing with you now. You glance over at her and she's snickering quietly.

“These are still outside my budget, Mel. Isn't there somewhere else? Or are you just gonna play games all afternoon?”

Meliora turns red and scowls at you, turning away.

“Never call me 'Mel' again. I don't like nicknames.”

You ease forward slightly. That hit a nerve. Now to exploit it a little.

“Listen, how about this? You show me where the cheapest shops are around here, and I won't call you 'Mel' again. Sound good, Mel?”

You sidestep the punch you knew was coming, but her kick catches you off guard and you eat pavement. Your head is ringing as you get up, but the damage isn't too severe. Frankly that could have been a love tap for all you know. You don't know if she has super robot strength or not.

-

Gain 1 minor wound.
>>
A quick explanation on wounds. Minor wounds do nothing except occupy wound slots. Major wounds give you a -2 penalty on rolls. Serious wounds give you -5. If a tier is filled, the wound goes up to the next tier. If you end up with a Serious wound and nowhere to put it, you're either KO'd or dead depending on the intent of the person who hit you.

-

Meliora grumbles a little bit, watching you get up with her arms folded.

“Promise.”

You blink, giving her a vacant look as you try to regain your sensibilities and brush yourself off.

“Promise what? The nickname thing?”

She nods.

“If you break your promise, I'll hit you even harder. I don't know if I'll stop. Got it?”

You nod slowly.

“Yeah, I promise, Meliora. Now, can you show me where the shops are already?”

Meliora sighs a bit and grabs your wrist, dragging you off towards a nearby alley.

“You better keep your word...”

Despite her size, a little smaller than you are, she's pretty quick on her feet, and you have to jog a bit to keep pace with the speed she's moving at. She takes you through a series of passageways, behind some buildings and towards a secluded dead end. There's a door, a manhole cover and a garbage can, but no sign of any stores. You try to come up with something witty about how if she wanted you alone you share the same bedroom, but the joke doesn't come together quickly enough, and you only manage “You know-” before she pries open the manhole and sets the cover aside.

“Let me do all the talking until we're in, got it? They'll know you're human from your smell alone, we don't need extra attention.”
>>
She gives you a look that you're pretty sure is meant to be intimidating, but it reminds you more of an angry kitten. She leaps down the manhole, plummeting into the darkness and leaving you to descend on your own. You didn't take the time to memorize the path back, and anyway you don't intend to leave empty-handed, so you begin the climb down beneath the town. It feels like it takes forever to make the climb, and when you reach the bottom Meliora is tapping her foot impatiently.

“Next time I'll just stand under the hole and catch you. Seriously, could you be any slower?”

You roll your eyes. You don't know if you're supposed to keep quiet for now or not, but you err on the side of caution and let her lead you on. She grabs your wrist once more and leads you through what you suppose might have once been an old sewer system. It's cleaned and polished now, and you can smell spices instead of filth. She leads you to a large metal door and glances at you.

“Once we're in, we're in. For now, don't speak.”

She taps firmly on the door, and a small shutter opens up. A set of yellow eyes peers out at you for a moment before switching to Meliora.

“Sup, turbo-bitch? I thought you had your fill last time?”

Meliora flushes a bit and grits her teeth.

“Two for the Bizarre, please.”

The eyes seem merry for a moment.

“Two, huh? Going on a date? I didn't think you had the heart for it. Oh wait, you're a robot, robots don't have feelings. Silly me.”

Meliora punches the door, leaving a dent in it with her hand, and the eyes vanish briefly.

“...Two for the Bizarre. Got it.”

Meliora smiles pleasantly.

“Thank you, Doorman.”

The door creaks open towards you. There's no one visible on the other side, but you can still see the eyes staring from the slit.

“Just make sure you come back and fix this... Ow...”

Meliora drags you inside and the Doorman slams shut behind you.

“Wait, isn't he a...? Oh, hell... If he dies, I'm not responsible..."
>>
Meliora pulls you along through the rest of the tunnel, which opens into a large underground chamber. Shops and stalls as far as the eye can see, and all manner of enticing smells from every angle. Vampires and dryads haggling over alchemical ingredients, werewolves and golems discussing sports, and a few ghosts drifting about with ethereal shopping baskets, collecting supplies for their hauntings.

“It's a bazaar.”

Meliora prods your cheek.

“It's the Bizarre. This is why I told you to be quiet earlier. Try not to get yourself in trouble here. Things are peaceful on the surface, but down here you have to keep your wits about you. Don't accept any shady deals, and don't sign anything, especially not in blood. Got it?”

You nod a little.

“Sure, why not.”

Meliora sighs a bit.

“I'll catch up with you. I've gotta grab a few things anyway. There are some clothing shops scattered about.”

You turn to ask her something, but she's already vanished into the crowd. Well, you're the son of a hunter, right? You know the basics of monsters, and you're not unarmed. You just have to make sure that no one gets a good whiff of you...

You wander around a little bit and get your bearings, avoiding small, exposed groups and sticking to big crowds where you hope your odor will be more readily concealed. It seems to work for the most part, and you explore fairly freely. There's everything here, from clothes to food to pacts that demons have made with mortals. You could buy a contract for a soul if you wanted, but the price isn't listed in dollars, and you don't really want to know what that squiggly symbol means, especially when it turns your stomach just to look at it.

You pass by a stall selling human organs preserved in jars, some advertised as souvenirs, while others seem to be soaking in alcohol or other such fluids, advertised as snacks and treats. Perhaps something for Angie, once you scrape the money together. You head from there to another shop selling hand-made baskets, with a small girl sitting behind the counter weaving faster than your eyes can follow. There's a small rune on her forehead, likely an animating seal for a golem. She doesn't even look up at you while she works, humming a quiet tune to herself.

At least you find a clothing store that deals in your size and your price range, and you smile to yourself as you advance toward it. You don't even see the person you collide with, you just wind up on the floor, staring up at a man build like two of you nailed together, with raw muscle used as the filler. He stares down at you derisively, glancing down at his shirt. There's a little dirt on it, and he doesn't look pleased with you. He strokes his beard slowly as he looks at you.

“What do you have to say for yourself?”

You stand up slowly, looking him in the eye.

“I'm sorry. I wasn't looking where I was going. I need to buy some clothes for something tonight, and I've been wandering around for a little while. I guess I wasn't paying attention once I saw what I wanted.”

The man walks a bit closer to you, glaring right in your face, but you manage not to flinch under his gaze. He brushes the dirt from his shirt and chuckles a little bit, his voice low, almost conspiratorial.

“You're an interesting young man. Stay out of trouble, human. You know how to show respect, so I won't tear out your throat, but if we cross paths again, be mindful where you step.”

He presses a small gold coin into your palm and walks away, laughing as he goes. You examine the coin briefly. You're fairly sure it's pure, but then, there's no way to know for sure without cracking it open. You have no idea what the value of gold is down here, but you're fairly sure it's pocket change for that man. You head for the clothing shop and slip it into your pocket for now.

The shop is full of various types of clothing, mostly in plain styles, dyed simply. The fabric is mostly silky smooth, but some of it is made from wool or cotton. There's a woman behind the counter working a loom, singing while she works. It's hard to tell with her baggy sleeves, but you're pretty sure she has more than two hands.

You meander among the racks of clothes and manage to find a few things here and there, but nothing that really goes together at all. The silky clothes seem the most durable, but none of it has a listed price. You've only got the one coin to haggle with, and you don't know quite how much you can get away with on just the one. You do what you can to put an outfit together, and come up with a few options.

You could wear a t-shirt, a button-up over it to keep the chill away if you end up outside, and a pair of pants, but nothing in your size goes together in terms of color. Your other option is a long-sleeved shirt that you'll probably be too warm in, and the same pair of pants. The colors are a little closer this time, but the combination of potential discomfort and the lack of a solid match makes you wary. You head for the counter with your options and the woman turns to face you, smiling sweetly.

“Ah, I see you've found some good patterns. Are these the items you want woven?”

You set the clothes on the counter. This is a custom clothing shop. You might need that coin after all.

“Do you do the dye work yourself?”

She shakes her head.

“No, my daughter tends to that most days. Her weaving is coming along well, but she needs more practice before I can hand over my loom completely. I'm not retiring just yet.”

She chuckles politely, bringing a hand to her mouth.

“So, will that be all? We can have it done in an hour or so, less if you need it rushed, though that will cost you extra.”

“Take your time, I've got plenty. I was actually planning to wander around a little bit. Mind telling me the price though? I'd rather make sure I come back with enough money to pay you back for it afterwards.”

She nods slightly and smiles.

“Two gold pieces will cover the full expense. I promise, we aren't cutting any corners with your outfit, so to speak. The prices really is that low.”

She grabs the clothes and begins examining them, noting down the numbers on the tags while you wrap your hand around the coin in your pocket and wishing you had a spell or something to double your money. You turn and walk away, giving her a few parting words as you consider your situation. You could steal, sure. You could probably rob a monster for their money, or maybe just stake a vampire or something if you're feeling suicidal. But maybe there's another way...

The sound of dice clattering catches your attention, and you follow it to its source. There are some monsters throwing dice, and it looks like craps to you. Easy enough game, especially when you know how to work the dice properly. You're not the best in the world at hustling tables, but you could give it a whirl.

Alright, time for gambling! Roll Luck. Which is to say, roll and hope. Best of three rolls. Yes, this roll can crit. It can also fumble. Then roll Sneak, which is +2. Your Luck determines how resistant your dice rolls are to the misfortune of, say, a passing demon being a dick, and your Sneak roll affects how well you can hustle.

You sit down and play dice for a little while, your skill at cheating with the dice matched only by whatever cruel luck is destroying your rolls any time you manage to build up any momentum. You wind up right back where you started before too long, with people telling you to keep playing, watching you intently.

Fuck it.

You toss your gold piece back into the pot, grab the dice and take a breath. Luck be a lady, or something like that. You throw the dice. Seven. You grab a few coins and make a tidy little stack of silver beside your gold coin, and prepare for another throw. Eleven. You smile confidently, throwing again and again until you have five gold pieces. You make a point to throw one back in and lose the next toss before proclaiming you'll take what you can get and making off with your loot.

You've got double what you were aiming for, so you can probably afford to splurge a little bit, or maybe buy something nice. A gift, maybe? Or you could see what they have on offer that could help you with your quest, or just a handy tool to have at the ready. There are plenty of shops around to check, but a few catch your eye.

There's a shady little book shop that looks like the kind of place a witch or vampire would find themselves at home in. You can see two little knickknack shops advertising small enchanted objects “at the lowest rates in town”, so they're either the same prices or one of them is lying. Last but not least, there's a man advertising “keys for every lock”, which would be handy if you could think of a door that you needed the key for. Still, worth noting for later.

You head into the bookstore and look around a little bit. Every shelf is made from black wood, and every book has a black cover with gold lettering on it. You sift through some of them, wandering the shop and examining rows of the books. They cover topics from black magic to demon summoning, but almost all of them have a price tag well outside your reach. You almost give up, when you hear chattering coming from the doorway.

A glance tells you that it's the girls you saw earlier with Vanessa, and they're heading your way. You slip behind a nearby shelf and press yourself up against the wall, taking a deep breath and holding it, letting it out very slowly. One of the girls stops only a foot from your hiding place and turns to her friends while grabbing one of the books.

“That's the official story at least. My money is on that boy who spoke with Sammy. He's new, and new means disruptive.”

“Honestly, Meg, you're being paranoid. If you keep being so presumptive you'll never be able to adapt.”

“Yeah! Plus, I think he was kinda cute. I'd love to give him a nibble. A little one, not to death or anything. Just a sampling. He'd make a handsome thrall with his eyes all glazed over.”

“Like mother, like daughter. You always think with your stomach, Selena.”

“Hey! I'm just saying I want to drink a bit of his blood and make him my slave, not guzzle him!”

“He'd reek of dog by now. I wouldn't want an ounce of his disgusting blood if he's been hanging around mutts. I'd bleed him dry just for show, but I wouldn't let even a drop of it touch my tongue.”

“If you killed every boy who spent time around dogs, you'd have to murder half the school to deal with what Vanessa left behind.”

They share some derisive laughter for a few moments.
>>
“Being in here always makes me hungry. It smells of human.”

“Well, the books are bound in human skin.”

“I dunno, it's kinda strong today. Ooh! I bet they must have a new edition of Pervicel's Demon Summoning, freshly bound and everything!”

“That book is practically worthless. Pervicel barely knew what he was doing at the best of times.”

“So what do you suppose it is then? It's not like they have snacks at the register here.”

Get out of here "Venom"!

You grab a book off the shelf, inhale slowly, then turn and toss it hard. It flies through the gap in the shelves almost perfectly, and collides noisily with the wall on the opposite side of the store. The vampire girls all jump, almost synchronized, and hurry off to investigate. Suckers. Vampires are so predictably nosy.

Then an urge strikes you. Attention will be on the other side of the store. You wrap your hands around a nearby book and stuff it down the front of your pants as carefully as you can. No shopping bag, no receipt, you'll just have to sneak out with it like this and hope no one asks any uncomfortable questions. You sneak your way to the door unnoticed and duck into a nearby alleyway, apparently unseen, to investigate your spoils.

You take one look at the cover and pause for a few seconds. It's a book on blood magic, the art of using blood and sacrifice to create spells and magical effects. This is either completely worthless or a great find, and you have no idea which. You take a peek inside to figure it out, but it's all written in Latin. Well, all good things...

You still have some time before you have to pick up your clothes, and you still have your four gold coins, though you should save two of them to pay for your outfit. You slip your book into your backpack and adjust it a little so that it's as hard to spot as possible.

You spend half an hour trying and failing to find Meliora. In that time you manage to narrowly avoid some close encounters with people you vaguely remember seeing around school, people who should be in class right now but either have magic doppelgangers, pet robots that they can copy their minds to, or thralls bound to their service to take notes on their behalf. Or you're just being paranoid. It's getting harder to tell after everything that's happened so far today.

You find yourself back at the tailor's shop after searching for a while, and take a moment to collect your thoughts. Roaming around senselessly is getting you nowhere, but maybe that's how this place works. You concentrate on Meliora, on a straight line between you and where she is, and close your eyes. You take two small steps and open them again. You're in a completely different place, and Meliora is maybe ten feet from you, talking to someone selling what look like broken desktop computers with weird runes written all over them. Blood is dripping from the floppy disk slot of one of the older ones. Maybe she's stopping for an upgrade or something?

But how best to approach her...

You approach slowly so you don't surprise her, moving to the stall next to the one she's shopping at and browsing their wares. You're only vaguely aware of the salesman trying to get you to buy a goat liver at discount price (“The perfect thing for the discerning organ consumer!”), your focus on Meliora. She doesn't seem to notice you, so you step just a bit closer. Still no reaction, another step. You're pretty much right beside her and she still isn't even acknowledging your presence, despite clearly being aware that you're next to her from how she moves around you to inspect various components for sale. Perhaps a different tactic is required here.

“How's it going?”

Meliora picks up a large, boxy computer setup and pushes it against your chest. You move your hands under it to take the weight, but it feels like your arms are going to rip out of their sockets. Meliora turns back to the shop owner.

“That'll be all this week. Deduct the usual sum from my father's account.”

The woman nods.

“Certainly. Have a nice day.”

Meliora turns to you and sighs.

“You can't even lift that...? Give it here...”

She takes it from you, holding it under one arm.

“Did it go well then? Got what you came for?”

You check your arms for signs of stretching or dislocated joints, but you'll be alright.

“Almost. I just need to go pick everything up. I wanted to find you first though, make sure you were fine. I mean, I can't leave without you, right?”

Meliora looks at you for a moment, then turns and walks off.

“Yep. Still an idiot. I can handle myself. Which shop did you go to?”

You briefly describe the woman at her loom, and Meliora wanders away, leaving you jogging after her once again. You reach the shop, where your new outfit is folded neatly on the counter. The tailor smiles warmly at you.

“Well, I think you'll look wonderful. And who is this, your girlfriend? I'm sure she'll like it as well. You'll look fantastic.”

You pull out the two gold coins and smile.

“Actually, she's just my roommate.”

You can practically feel the heat coming off Meliora's bright red face, and the woman laughs a bit.

“I figured it was something like that. You don't seem like a couple to me. I just wanted to tease a little bit.”

She takes the coins from you and passes you two small bottles, one red and one blue.

“They're dyed fairly plainly right now, but with how it's woven if you dump one of the bottles onto one of the pieces, the dye will spread evenly across the whole thing.”

You take a moment to inspect the dye job. Black on the overshirt and pants, and white on the t-shirt underneath. You might dye the pants blue and the t-shirt red. Or maybe something else...? Who knows. You smile at the tailor.

“Thanks a bunch. I really appreciate it.”

The tailor bows low.

“Always happy to be of service. Please come back again the next time you're in need of new attire.”

You turn and start to walk off, with Meliora following behind you, dumbfounded.

“That's exactly like something my father would say... It's not just him...”

You tilt your head a little.

“Your dad is a jackass who likes to mess with you and poke fun at you?”

Meliora nods a little.

“Yep... I just always thought he was an isolated case of such rampant stupidity...”

“That seems pretty normal to me. I mean, my dad was like that sometimes. I didn't see him much, and when I did he was usually drunk, but...”

You shrug slightly. You weren't really sure where you were going with this, you were just hoping to provide her some comfort. Meliora looks down as you head for the door, so you try another approach.

“I grew up hating my dad. I always thought he was a jerk, dragging me all over the country. It was always about what he wanted, never about me. I didn't get to grow up the way I wanted to. Then one day he was gone, and I learned that everything had been about me all along. I just didn't see it at the time. I didn't trust him. I didn't believe in him. Maybe your dad jokes a lot, and sure, maybe sometimes he'll do things you hate, but do you really think he isn't trying to do what he thinks is right?”

Meliora remains silent until you reach the surface, before looking you in the eye.

“My father... is a fool. He's too socially inept to get a girlfriend, so he built me to be his daughter. I exist to fill a void in his life. That's my purpose. It's sad, isn't it?”

You shake your head.

“Not really. He made you so that he would have a daughter to laugh with and spoil, to share his life with. Keep pushing him away and you'll just make him more desperate.”

You turn and start walking down the alley, trying to remember where the bus stop was.

“Do you really want to push him away so hard he makes another daughter to replace you? Then you won't have a dad at all. You could try talking to him, right?”

You don't look back. You've said what you need to, and she'll figure the rest out. Now, where was that damn bus stop...

“...right. Heh. Thanks. Maybe you're not a total idiot. This way.”

Meliora walks past you, leading you back to the bus, smiling softly.

You send Sammy a quick message while you wait for the bus to turn up and get the following reply.

“Meet me by the front gate after school. 3:30 sharp.”

You check your watch briefly. You've got just enough time to get back to your room and change before the party, but you won't have time for anything else unless you sprint. Just how long did you spent down there...? Seems like time passed by pretty damn quickly.

We're walking into werewolf home turf, no way we should walk in unprotected, even on good will.

Sammy wouldn't let anything hurt us

Actually, can werewolves transform on command or is it only on the full moon?

Pretty sure no amount of prep we can perform at the moment would save us from an entire family of werewolves.

Why bother wearing ourselves out rushing?

Did we just pass a non-Schmooze roll?

Will we finally understand not to bite their ears?
>>

>Did we just pass a non-Schmooze roll?
Yes, it's happened about six times this thread.
>>
The werewolf “curse” can be transmitted through bites from afflicted individuals, and there's no control over the transformations. The werewolf “race”, on the other hand, consists of people born from those afflicted with the curse, bloodlines born with the affliction and who learned to control it. They can shift at will, though their moods do tend to change with the phases of the moon. You forgot to note down what phase the moon was in last night, so you'd have to look up a lunar calendar or something.

So, sprinting to prep then?
>>

gotta go fast

Nah. Just walk.
>>
>>43383506
Sure,

You gonna start a new thread or end soon? We're pretty close to the edge
>>
>>43383541
Ending soon, I think. That way we can start with the party stuff next time.
>>
>>43383506
If checking a lunar calendar counts as prep yes, if not no. We lack silver or anything really useful against them, much less have a means to get it.
>>
>>43383569
It doesn't count as prep, no. Also we've got a tie on our hands.
>>
>>43383716
>>43383569
I say go for it. We could use the silver cross as a bludgeon, at least.
>>
>>43383740
and we couldn't hide it at all, and they'd rip us to shreds. If anything bringing it would signify lack of trust and be insulting.

You're still thinking like a Hunter, which BTQM has stressed repeatedly WILL NOT WORK!
>>
>>43383847
Not that it won't work, but that if you want to think like that, you need to be damned subtle.

If we want to change into the suit we bought specifically for this, would we have to go back to our dorm?
>>
>>43383942
Yes, and changing is happening regardless of which option wins.
>>
>>43383942
Yes and we can do so and make time via walking, Running is only prepping for oh noes dah evul wolfies gonna eats me without muh weaponz.
>>
You ride with Meliora back to the dorm in relative silence, and you hurry back to the building to get changed and get ready. You slip on your clothes, dying the pants to a deep blue color and giving the t-shirt a bit of red, then a lot of red when it turns out pink the first time. You slip your silver cross around your neck, double check yourself in the mirror, and pause.

The cross seems a little bit much. You're a guest of honor after all. You swap it out with a small wooden ankh and adjust your glasses a little bit. Much better. Now you don't look like you're expecting them to mob you and rip you apart. You give the lunar calendar a quick glance. Near the full moon, but not quite there yet. Party time.

You head for the main gate and find Sammy waiting for you there. She's done her hair up a bit, and despite telling you to dress casual, she's dressed up in a black skirt and a fairly snug white top. She smiles and waves at you as you approach.

“Hey, how's it going? Nice outfit.”

You smile.

“Same to you. You're making me look under-dressed though.”

Sammy shakes her head.

“Trust me, you'll be glad you decided not to go all out. How do I put it... The boys tend to roughhouse, while the girls tend to... uh... I guess play politics. Honestly, the roughhousing sounds a lot more fun...”

A black car pulls up, and a rather fancy one at that. It's not a limo, but it looks pretty expensive. The driver gets out, a young man who vaguely reminds you of the person you collided with at the Bizarre. He grins from ear to ear, and Sammy runs over to him. She's taller than he is, so you guess he's around your height.
>>
“Blake!”

He hugs her tight and spins her around.

“How's my favorite cousin doing?”

Sammy laughs a bit as he sets her down.

“Free!”

She points at you.

“He...”

She pauses for a moment, and you give her a small nod while pressing a finger to your lips. She nods and leans in close, whispering to him. His eyes widen, and he walks over to you.

“Is it true?”

Sammy gives you a broad smile and nods at you, and you nod to Blake.

“Yep. Every word.”

Blake grins and slaps you on the back hard enough to make you stumble.

“Then let me be the first to say our family owes you a debt. She might be a runt, but my cousin is a very important young lady for our clan.”

Sammy blushes and frowns, looking away at the mention of her being a “runt”, but Blake doesn't seem to be paying attention. He motions to the car.

“You can sit in the front seat. I'd normally make you sit in the back, but it's a special occasion so you can ride shotgun.”

Sammy quietly gets into the back seat, while Blake looks at you expectantly.

>Sure thing, sounds fun
