You dig your claws in and immediately start digging lines into the decks as you're slowly pulled backwards.

"Milly? Little help? Call your Mom off?"

You see Milly cast a skeptical look at the tentacles before answering.

"Those tentacles are red!" she yells to you.

You look over your shoulder. You'd say they're more of a carmine pink, but maybe mermaids don't have as good color perception as lizard monsters.

"And?" you ask, still not sure why the color matters.

"Mom's tentacles are white!" she calls back.

Oh. Well, you are error. Your back legs reach the edge of the deck and you dig in harder only for the wood to splinter, not strong enough to withstand you. In a heartbeat you find yourself dangling from the edge by your wingclaws. This is getting silly.

At least the tentacles are attacking other people too now.

Too early in the day for passing out from overexertion. Need lunch first.

Heat wave should allow us to boil water around us and will render this kraken calamari if it holds onto us too long, its effectively the same as holding onto a burning skillet. This should enable us to get in, get some bites in, and maybe sha... oh wait thats right we're not dexterous enough to effectively use the knife, unless we stab with our feet.

There's been this weird burning feeling at the back of your throat all day. It's kind of annoying. You figure you're totally okay with hocking a burning loogie at a tentacle. You press your arms against the ship and try to force a space to fire down through, and are fairly unsuccessful. You're beyond caring though.

Heat wells up along your spine as you try to force the burning sensation out. A pressure in your chest rapidly rises to a peak before exploding out of your mouth as a torrent of flame. A line of fire streaks down your chest and across the side of the ship, the rare unimpeded edge just tickilng the tentacle.

At the same time you feel something in your flame mingle with a magic that seems to leak out of your skin. It feels almost like something asking permission. You'll allow it.

The flame in your mouth explodes across you and your body burns brightly. A coat of flame hangs off you and singes the tentacles where they cling to you. Determined, they just tighten their grip and pull harder. Your claws drag down the side of the ship, barely stopping at the stop you just set on fire.

The heat of your fire definitely got a reaction from the tentacles. You close your eyes and contemplate the sun. You have another burning trick you can do. The world is shut out as you let yourself enter a bask. The lines you're digging in the ship's side don't matter. Just the sun. The energy you associate with a combat bask builds up and you let it leak out

HEAT WAVE

Immediately the skin of the tentacles begins to crinkle where it wasn't already burning from touching you. The tentacle thrashes hard and you lose your claw grip. You immediately beat your wings to try and get airborne but the thrashing fouls you up and you crash into the sea.

The water heats up around you and you can see it bubbling off you where the water contacts the flames cloaking your body. That's literally all you can see. You release it and your vision clears.

I don't think either have a job per say, I think both of them are in college and dealing with the fact that the next two months are hell for all of us. (Once mid terms start everything becomes about raising grades, crunching for tests, and preparing for semester finals). Give it until roughly 2-3 weeks after thanksgiving and they'll all pop up again.

The octopus' body is sadly out of reach. Luckily it has offered up some of its tentacles as a sacrifice to your glory. You gleefully accept.

Bending over your own body you go to town with your wing claws. Octopus flesh is rubbery, but this isn't your first time clawing into weird things. Octopus blood flows. The tips of the tentacles try to entangle your claws but you just tear them free and resume clawing. As its grip starts to slacken you manage to bend far enough to get your mouth into the mix. Octopus is surprisingly good. Maybe a bit salty, but you're in the ocean. Avoid the taste of salt is like avoiding water.

You feel water rushing past you, and look up to see the octopus is reeling in its tentacles so it can bring more to bear on you. A couple of its other limbs are taken up wrestling with other, lesser, lizards who are giving a good showing of their own. Lizards may not be born in water but they fight in it better than a lot of other creatures.

Flapping your wings you pull free of the wreck of tentacles you just tore through and swim away from the new ones. Apparently your wings work reasonably well under water too. Not great. But you can swim at least.

You fly throught the water, avoiding more tentacles as you dash from limb to limb. Hitting them hard and fast you manage to get several lizards free before the octopus can summon a defense against you.

Still, as you swim you the tentacles you've damaged are healing rapidly. The cuts and missing bits of flesh knit together and grow back. The few limbs not chasing you are poking above the water and dragging down more sailor lizards. One or two disappear under the curtain of flesh that surrounds the octopus' underside before you can act.

Redoubling your efforts you start managing to keep anyone else from being eaten. The sailors are apparently having a hard time fending off the attacks of the octopus as it starts ignoring you and releasing any lizard you try to save in favor of batting you away. The speed it gets more sailors is increasing, and with lizards just floating in the water and swimming back to the ship the crew on deck must be having manpower problems. The lizards are slowly giving up trying to get back aboard as half of them end up grabbed again if they swim within range of the octopus.

The charge on your heat wave appears to have run out. It wasn't doing much considering how you kept moving around in the water anyway.

Over the course of this fight you have verified three things. One, tentacles are stronger than they have any right to be. Two, There are more tentacles than you can readily handle. Three, Octopi lack bony hard parts that would protect vital organs. You decide to act on the last one.

You rescue another lizard, and angle in toward the center of the octopus. It immediately spots what you're doing, its lack of attacks on your person apparently not indicating a lack of attention on the wyvern in the water, and its tentacles come to bear. Weaving around them you almost make it to the creature's eye before you feel something wrap around your ankle.

The world spins and turns dry before you slam into something significantly less hard than you. There's a moment where you recognize the side of Milly's ship before you're pulled under again by the tentacle on your leg. Then you hit something hard again, knocking the breath out of you. Ah, the other side of Milly's ship.

Keeping a death grip on your consciousness you manage to spread your wings halfway through the next swing. The drag on them is horrendous and your feel like you stretched your wing membrane to its limit, but you slow down long enough to slash your way free of the tentacle. You flap your wings and orient on the octopus again just before it wraps a tentacle around your wing.

Its color has changed, you notice. The tentacle, not the wing, has turned a greyish black, and looking over at the body you spot the octopus' limbs withdrawing into a cloud of dark black stuff billowing out into the water. As you pass the edge of the polluted black water you feel a reaction from your mantle.

Whatever you do it'll have to be fast, you're on low air.

You activate the mantle and immediately the water around generates its own dark cloud. You can feel the water, condensed and wispy around you, and there's some kind of charge in it that is constantly dissipating into the water around you. Through the inky darkness you can sense the location of all the lizards in the water and the octopus, whose cloud appears as a solid mass to you with a churning body within. The boat is a wall to the weird new sense.

The octopus apparently can make out the change in you, and it flinches. You fly free of the tentacle with a wing assisted kick, and make for the surface. As soon as you breach through it the water around you billows out into the air, a growing column of dark clouds following your flight. The weird sense from before disappears but instead you can see through the black fog billowing out from you, and the charge that was endlessly disappearing into the water builds up in the cloud around you.

You circle around back toward the ship and see that in the spots where the octopus' dark cloud touches the surface a stream of the dark water vapor funnels up into the sky. Right now there's not much but it's accruing quickly. Below, the dark shape attached to the bottom of the ship detaches and starts to move away.

You note the direction the shadow of the octopus heads in as you glide down to the ship. Milly is engaged in directing lizards to deal with a half dozen problems, more than one of which is fire. You kind of wonder how the octopus started a- Oh wait, that was you. She yells for lizards to copy the human crew and occasionally pokes her head overboard to yell that the lizards down there stay there until they can lower a ladder. Apparently she has concerns about lizard claws putting more holes in her ship. Her mast is currently leaning more than is probably desirable, and most of the fences on the deck side have been broken in at least one place. Half her crew appears to be in the water waiting for someone to find a non-burning piece of rope.

"Uh, need help?" you ask, carefully staying out of the way of rushing sailors.

"Can your black cloud thingy put out fires?"

You look at the clouds billowing out from you. They're made of water and magic. At least one of those things doesn't burn very well.

"If you can't put out fires then go tell the lizards in the water to stop trying to climb back aboard. Or help them back aboard. Just stop damaging my ship," she tells you in stern voice. She's taking to her new position quickly. Already super bossy.

"I was going to chase the octopus."

"Well, then you should hurry. Once it gets going it's faster than my Mom. I know this because she can never catch up to it."

"So she doesn't sink ships?"

"Mom and the giant octopi both do about half the ship sinking," Milly explains, "Now either help or get off my ship."

You jump off the ships and do a close fly by of the side you originally set on fire. Behind you the column of cloud you generate hangs in the air for a moment before spreading out. The fire, already burning weakly, goes out with little encouragement. Taking this as proof of concept you proceed to strafe the ship multiple times, leaving lines of cloud over the larger fires. You manage to only knock over a couple sailors, and the cloud helps. The deck fires are apparently harder to put out since your cloud column tends to float up into the air to join the growing storm cloud above you rather than settle down on to the fire.

Once you get that done you turn to helping lizards back aboard. This is a great deal more fun since you get to dive out of the sky, grab a screaming lizard with your feet, and dump them on the deck. You're almost sad at the sudden increase in efficiency around the few ropes the sailors threw down to their comrades. You only get to pick up a half dozen lizards before the rest are hanging off the ship's ropes and eyeing you carefully.

You release the mantle and immediately stop generating clouds from all over your body. Landing on the ship's bow you watch the sailors rush around, smothering the last fires and doing whatever repairs they can. You pass the time by chewing on seagulls. It doesn't quite take the edge off you hunger but nothing really has.

Eventually, Milly wanders over and the sailors get the ship turned toward shallower water.

"What's the damage?"

"We'll have to put in at the port to get some of it fixed but mostly it's just stuff on the deck we can fix."

"Sorry..."

"I was going to have the hull reinforced anyway. The lizards like climbing all over things too much to leave it the normal way."

You watch the lizard members of the crew jumping around in the rigging, securing ropes and doing other sailor-y type things. Your knowledge of boats is on par with the finest miners in the land. Which is to say you know more about mining than boats.

"Getting to know the ropes then?"

"Don't get me started on ropes," Milly grumbles, "Half the ship is apparently made to run on rope."

You sit in companionable silence for a bit.

"Sorry, about your brother," Milly says suddenly.

"Which one?"

"Uh, the stupid one?"

"Ah, there's no apologizing for him. He makes bad decisions all by himself."

You vaguely recall someone told you Din got his tail kicked in by Milly for... some reason.

"What did he do anyway?"

"He tried out sailing and decided he wanted to be captain. I got to sort out my first mutiny!" she says, sounding slightly pleased. "Most of the crew sided with me."

"Some of it sided with my brother?" you ask, surprised.

"Huh? No, the rest of them all decided they should be captain too. Lot's of lizards trying to be captain."

You hum thoughtfully. That sounds about right.

You chat with Milly for a while but decide you need to do something productive today. Also, you kinda just ditched Mom earlier today. Two birds with one stone! You prefer a larger number of birds but you'll settle for two.

The flight back home is uneventful, barring the giant mosquito that you crashed into. It took forever to pick the stupid thing out of your eye. Circling your house you come to a gentle landing that only imbeds you in mud up to your knees. Mom is snoozing in the late afternoon sun. One of her arms is mangled. Was it like that this morning? Wow, you really weren't paying attention.

She sleeps through your landing but the sucking noises the mud makes when you pry yourself out rouse her. As you struggle out of the mud she watches, amused.

"Havings fun?"

You shrug.

"Wings are hard. Mud is soft. They mix poorly," you say succinctly.

"I cans imagine," she says in her usual whisper, "Did you gets up to anything while you were gone?"

"Loads," you tell her. You proceed to tell her about your day. When you get to the octopus she sighs in resigned way.

"I hates that octopus," she grumbles, "If you put up even a little bit of fight it'll look for the first opportunity to escape."

"It stucks around for me for quite a while," you protest.

"Yes, dear. But you're not really ins its weight class. It's more of my size," she explains, grinning at you.

"I'm totally in its weight class! I could fight it all day! I could fight you!" you growl out.

Mom openly laughs at you.

"Prove it," she says.

You leap into the air and circle the clearing by your house. She's groundbound so all you really need to do is strafe her. She's probably not fire proof enough to completely resist your flames. You come around for a flame run and mom watches from where she lays. As you level out mom spits and you are knocked tail skyward by a blob of mom's favorite sticky gunk. You fall like a stone and slam into a tree.

"I w-" Mom starts to say but stops.

You pull some fire up into my mouth until my mantle responds to it, and your are now on fire. Your mantle apparently reacts to magically charged materials and will form a cloak of the same if allowed to. The gunk clinging to me become hard and brittle as the flame cook it and after a long minute you manage to break free. You stand up and stare Mom down. Flames lick around your face and eyes. No doubt your scales and ridges are further enhanced by the flames licking off them, making you look bigger.

Mom considers me for a moment before grinning maniacally.

"Okays," she grins.

The next hours are spent fighting Mom. I make a very good showing, occasionally pinning a limb, or getting onto her back and managing to stay there for a minute before she gets me off. After a while it becomes obvious Mom is doing more to take it easy on me than just not poisoning me, apparently she's got more injuries than just the one damaged arm and all her movements are a bit slow. There's still more time spent trying not to crash into trees or digging yourself out of the mud than You'd like. Mom know a lot about fighting, and fighting injured. You're learning just watching her.

Finally around sunset your strength deserts you, the sun given strength and the normal kind. You're feeling ravenous, but fortunately Mom was sleeping next to a massive slab of crab meat. The two of you eat and chat. Mom tells you things you did wrong, and other ways you can improve. She's got a lot of experience fighting all sorts of monsters.

Evening sets in and most of the family shows up. Koma drags Din back from wherever she works. Your brother is still covered in bandages. Jho and Dad bring a giant catfish with them. It's not enough to sate Mom, or even you if you haven't eaten recently, but it helps with the worst of your lingering hunger pangs.

The night passes idly.
