“It's all gone wrong!” you moan, burying your face in the mountain of paperwork on your desk. “Why can't things just go smoothly for once!?”

“It's not allowed,” Yoruichi sighs while Tenkotsuki pats you encouragingly on the back. “Of course something was going to happen, it was Byakuya's kid sister.”

“You make a good point,” you grumble. “So what exactly did your advance team report?”

Yoruichi flips through a small notebook in her hand, which details some of the observations one of her Onmitsu has made of Rukia's stay in the living world so far. “Only that she's made contact with Kisuke, and that she seems to be staying at the Kurosaki Clinic.”

“If she's gone to Kisuke already, that means there must have been some sort of incident. That could explain why she hasn't come in yet,” you reason, slowly lifting your head from the desk. “She made no mention of it, and her work has still been getting done, so there's no indication as to what may have happened.”

“Whatever it was, it's trouble,” Yoruichi shuts the notebook with a dull snap and a frown. “Byakuya's making a lot of noise about it. I'm concerned he may try to take independent action to recapture Rukia.”

“And risk finding my foot planted firmly in his behind?” you muse. “He must be taking this seriously.”

Yoruichi shrugs as she steps back towards the portal to her own quarters. “For a boy so enamored with the rule of law, he can sure be unpredictable. I just wanted to warn you.”

“Thanks,” you nod quietly. “I'll see to it.”

That being said, it's hard to say what exactly should be done. You've already received outside scouting reports, and many of your own teams are already deployed elsewhere in the living world at the moment. So sending other people to scout seems like it would be a misappropriation of resources, for what will probably be negligible gain. Which means that if you're going to proceed there are only three real choices...
>1/2

You are Kusajishi Riku, Captain of the Seireitei Court Guard's Ninth Division. One of your subordinates has overstayed her deployment to the living world under unknown circumstances. The Central 46 may soon mark her absent without leave, making her a wanted criminal... your aim will be to act before anyone else does and stabilize the situation.

It's summer in the living world: early morning on June 17th, to be precise.

Thus is the stage set, ready for the actors to make their appearances.

>Go to the living world yourself with the intent of capturing and returning with Kuchiki Rukia
>Go to the living world yourself, determine precisely what has happened to Kuchiki Rukia
>Send Rangiku to the living world and resign yourself to accepting whatever comes of it

As always, you need only ask one simple question: who's gonna stop you?

Riku is a Captain. She can basically do whatever the fuck she wants so long as it doesn't put the Soul Society in danger (unless she receives specific orders from the Head Captain not to do it).

It's a pain in the ass, but at least it gives you a good excuse to visit some old friends. So you leave a note for Rangiku when she gets back into the office and head for the Senkaimon. The First Division shinigami posted to guard the gate stand at attention when they spot a white haori coming towards them, and as soon as they can make out your face they somehow seem to stand up even straighter than that.

“Ma'am!” one of them greets you stiffly. “I wasn't informed you were leaving.”

You wave him off. “Something's come up with one of my subordinates in the field. I'm going to check on her. Please inform the Head Captain.”

His partner nods, seemingly satisfied. “Of course, ma'am. Happy travels, Lady Shiba.”

Stepping through the Senkaimon, the first thing you notice is how much this town has changed since the end of the war. It's bustling now, only a “town” in the sense that it was so before being engulfed by the sprawling Tokyo metropolitan area. You touch down in an alleyway, and look yourself over.

“I need something a bit more... human,” you mutter to Tenkotsuki.

“I shall keep that in mind,” she replies as she converts your reigai into a physical body. The process leaves you tired out for a few moments while you catch your breath, but the result seems to suit your needs just fine.

You can sense quite a few spiritual powers in this town. Not unusual among a large population of humans, but their strengths are somewhat above what you'd normally expect. There's little Ryūken of course... he's grown quite a bit stronger since he was in University. You can tell even though he's keeping himself “hidden”. There are four more that feel like quincies: two are too weak to tell for sure, while two more are strong enough that it's obvious. The two weaker ones seem to be together, while the third is near Ryūken.

Then there are the ones that make no sense to you. Near the fourth Quincy is a large number of weak spirits, too close and faint to tell apart. Among them you also find three who stand out. The strange thing is you can't tell exactly what sort of beings they are: they may actually be otherwise “ordinary” humans with unusual powers. The fourth feels strange as well, not in terms of overall power but in terms of quality. This last power is well separated from the cluster of smaller powers.

>Investigate one of the powers? (which?)
>Investigate the largest concentration of powers?
>Go drop by Isshin's home?

The scariest question and answer recently on ask

>>Question: If Tamano no Mae was wandering after she was killed, couldnt other god tier entities be wondering too, if they died in myth? Type of thing where the story would be interesting to Aizen. Bind or capture one of them. Good thing it was kept quiet.

>King:... who says it was "kept quiet"?

Then you realize that Riku only told two people, however there is an antagonistic god who knows where Tamano no Mae is, and some other god tried to get her killed...

Perhaps Aizen has some extra allies or information that will be unexpected.

You think you remember where the Kurosaki Clinic is supposed to be, so you head towards it. You get a few odd looks as you pass people in the street, but nobody approaches you. That's strange.

“What did you do?” you ask Tenkotsuki.

She seems as surprised as you. “Nothing,” she insists. “I merely tailored your attire to meet current fashion trends. Nothing more, nothing less!”

When you arrive at the Clinic and knock at the door, it takes a minute before a tall man with a beard and a white coat answers. Your target confirmed, you leap into action.

“Surprise!”

With a powerful flying kick, you send Isshin sailing down the hallway and into the kitchen, where you tuck into a roll and come up on your feet. You flash him a confident thumbs-up.

“Why is there a schoolgirl kicking my butt!?” Isshin cries in shock, his voice muffled as he pinches his nose.

“You've gotten sloppy in your old age, Isshin!” you taunt, continuing to pepper your adoptive brother with a series of playful kicks. “I worry for the future of our family name!”

It's only then that you realize two young girls are staring at you from the kitchen table, one covering her mouth and the other raising her eyebrow at you. These must be Masaki and Isshin's daughters, you realize. No wonder they feel like they have some Quincy blood in them.

“Is that... Riku?” Isshin wonders aloud as he stares back up at you. “Why are you here? What's going on?”

“You never write me anymore!” you round on him. “Is that any way to treat your sister?"

“Sister, huh?” the black-haired girl mutters... Karin, you think her name was. “I guess that explains the entrance. I'm glad we got mom's genes.”

“Yuzu, more soup please.”

“We're not related by blood, Karin,” you explain to her mild surprise. “So don't blame me. And yes, I know your names. I've known you both since you were little, though it's not surprising you wouldn't remember me.”

“So Isshin,” you continue as your brother struggles to get to his feet. “Where's that wife of yours? I was looking forward to seeing her all grown up.”

“Watch the 'grown up' talk,” Rosa cautions you.

Isshin cracks his neck before returning to his seat at the table. “She's off at a conference at Sapporo Med. She'll be back in a few days.”

“I see,” you nod, taking a seat as well. “Good to hear you're both doing well.”

Isshin laughs. “Well, with Ryūken running the hospital we rarely get the worst cases. A lot of family medicine.”

“And I hear you've got yourself a houseguest?” you continue, helping yourself to some miso. Isshin's expression darkens. “Would you mind if I spoke with her?”

“She should be at school with Ichigo,” he explains. “I figured you were wearing the uniform, so you must have just transferred in?”

“That's right!” you lie for the benefit of his daughters. “Just figured I'd say hello to you beforehand, since I'm gonna lose most of the day's instruction anyway.”

“I know this has to come as a surprise, but I promise I've got a good reason for it.”

Isshin nods. “So it's got something to do with the old man?”

You shrug. “Something like that. But I can tell you it's all business, though it's a great excuse to see some familiar faces.”

“How bad is it?” Isshin presses quietly, hoping his daughters either won't hear or won't understand.

You drop your voice as well. “The Kuchiki are involved.”

“That sounds like a mess,” he mutters before raising his voice back to full volume. “Well, feel free to stop by again some time, little sis! Our doors are open, and I'm sure Masaki will be happy to see you again too!”

“I'll remember that!” you nod enthusiastically, throwing a punch that Isshin manages to deflect just in the nick of time. “Thatta boy. See you, brother!”

Probably by
A: urahara intervention
B: isshin being more protective.

D: swarming the town with shinigami.

when did we ever do something that would protect her from grand fisher? Was it just mentioned briefly in a post and I missed it?
>>

Most likely Yawtch is either different and doesn't have the Soul noming power, or relations with the Quincy were good enough that he wasn't willing to risk the sort of mass noming that would almost certainly result in him being found and killed before he fully regained his powers.
>>
>>43391391
It's also why Ishida's mom is still alive.

Grand fisher only killed Masaki because Ywach took her powers. Because there are shinigami all over the town he couldn't do that undetected.

You head towards what appears to be the only unchanged building in the whole city: the Urahara Shop.

Outside is something new, however: a young boy with red hair and a girl with long black hair. The former seems to be playing imaginary baseball with his broom, and badly at that, while the girl is meekly trying to convince him to get back to his chores.

“Hey lady!” the boy shouts at you when he notices you. “Shop's closed, the boss is out!”

“Hey, Ururu? What's up?” the boy asks his partner, who has been staring at you blankly since she first laid eyes on you.

“Threat detected,” she states in a hushed monotone. “Identified as Kusajishi Riku. Captain-class. Point nine-nine certainty. Options limited, engaging in delaying action while primary escapes.”

Ah, you see... this girl must be a mod-soul specifically programmed to evaluate and remove threats to the shop and its owner. In this case, Kisuke's programmed her to delay you while he runs away. Clever bastard, but it seems he's underestimated you.

The girl dashes straight forward and tries to punch you, but with your longer limbs you're able to stop her cold with a foot to the face. As she tries to grapple with your ankle you kick off in a high arc, landing some twenty feet away atop a fence post.

“Well, that was unexpected,” you muse as the young boy stares at you slack-jawed.

Wait... did she say “escape”?

“Fine!” you grunt down at the mod soul girl. “I know when I'm not welcome.”

You then turn and vacate the premises, wagering that Ururu's offensive conditioning doesn't extend past the property line. Once you're sure you haven't been followed you have Tenkotsuki erase your spiritual pressure and warp light around you, effectively hiding your gigai from any prying eyes as you use hirenkyaku to slip past the two brats in the front yard.

Shutting the door behind you, you look around the dimly-lit interior of the shop to find that Urahara is in fact here. He lets go of the blinds and seats himself at a small table. “It's okay, Tessai, she's gone now.”

You elect to sit across the table from him and merely wait until Tessai brings out three cups of tea.

Urahara looks at the tea, then at Tessai. He sighs.

“Should've known it wouldn't be that easy. I take it you're here about Lady Kuchiki?”

“That Tessai is quite a sharp man,” Tenkotsuki observes as she undoes her spell to reveal you.

You sip at the tea. “That's right. Yoruichi tells me her Onmitsu saw Rukia come in here.”

“That'd be because she did,” Urahara smiles. “Bought a few things and left. Seems she was wounded trying to protect Isshin's oldest brat, and needed a gigai to recover in.”

“And the rest of her mission load since then?” you raise an eyebrow. “How's that been getting done?”

“With some help, of course,” he continues to smile.

That settles it. “The boy has some powers of his own, I take it?”

“Bingo!” Kisuke cheers, covering his mouth with a fan. “You did notice it, didn't you?”

“The bizarre number of spiritually sensitive humans in this town?” you ask. “Believe it or not, yeah. I did.”

“Rukia's been staying on to investigate that phenomenon,” Kisuke explains. “Also, her powers may or may not still be suffering from her injuries. So she can't open a Senkaimon on her own.”

“And she doesn't know that anyone else in this town can,” you hypothesize, “nor does she want to report her own weakened condition. I get it.”

“You shouldn't bother with security measures like that mod-soul girl,” you frown as you sip at your tea. “I'm not mad at you or anything.”

Kisuke looks surprised. “You're sure?”

“Positive. I may give you a hard time sometimes, but I've had a long time to cool my heels,” you explain.

Kisuke gives a nervous laugh. “Well, then. If that's how you feel, that's how you feel!”

“Truer words never spoken. If anything comes up, let me know?” you ask as you stand to leave.

Kisuke nods, suddenly serious again. “Depends on what comes up... but I'll keep you in mind. Oh, and be careful at the school.”

Wondering what he meant by that, you invite yourself out. Kisuke hands you a slip of paper and explains which classroom Kurosaki Ichigo will most likely be found in. As you go the red-haired boy stares at you in confusion while Ururu politely invites you to come back any time.

Karakura High School looks like any other school. Typical postwar utilitarian design, with all the classrooms in one building and an open field out back for gym classes. You let yourself in through the front gate and into the building, where the staff in charge give you a quick scolding for “being so late”. None of them realize you're a two-century old demigod.

“Now, time to see if I got everything right!” Tenkotsuki announces cheerfully. “I found there was a mathematical representation of what constitutes the “perfect” gap between the hem of a skirt and the top of a long sock, so I hope I replicated it accurately.”

“I'm sure you did fine,” you reassure her as you reach the classroom listed on Kisuke's note. “Maybe too well, if anything.”

You slide the door open, and an entire classroom of teenagers turns to stare at you. The atmosphere is one of stunned silence.

“Are you lost, miss?” the teacher asks you, clearly upset at having been interrupted.

“I was told this would be my class,” you lie. “There must have been an office mix-up. Maybe that's why you weren't informed?”

“Another one out of nowhere? Fine, fine,” she sighs, waving you towards the chalkboard and unwittingly confirming that Rukia has taken to sitting in on these classes as cover. “Might as well do things properly, then.”

“My name is Kusajishi Riku,” you announce, writing the name up on the board. “Kusajishi as in “Running Deer”, and “Riku” as in my parents got lazy. I look forward to working with you all.”

A chuckle or two at your joke, but otherwise an unamazing entrance. You do notice a Quincy sitting in the room, peering at you from behind rectangular glasses... you lock eyes with him and flare your reiatsu briefly to ensure he stays silent. Thankfully he does so. Also in the room are two girls with decent spiritual pressure, for humans at least, and a large Latino-looking boy who's built like a heavy cruiser. A few of the other students have trace amounts of reiatsu, but nothing else out of the ordinary.

Rukia and your nephew are absent, and there are a few open seats.

Tenkotsuki and Rosa seem surprised at the relative normality of your arrival, and perhaps a bit disappointed. You'll have to make it up to them.

You take a seat next to the Quincy, carefully elbowing the boy who's been eying your legs in the face as you turn. You think you hear something crack, though nobody else in the room takes any notice. Well, nobody aside from one of the two girls you noticed before. She has messy, short hair... you think girls like her are called “tomboys” these days, and seems to realize that you did that deliberately. You've certainly piqued her interest.

“Nice to meet you, Quincy,” you whisper a greeting.

The boy adjusts his glasses. “My name is Ishida Uryū. We'll talk more after school... shinigami.”

"Jeez, I gave my life for that brat?" Rosa sighs in frustration.

An Ishida, eh? You guess that makes this Ryūken's boy. Should have guessed with his demeanor and his poor eyesight. Seems everyone in that family wears glasses.

The lecture only lasts another half hour or so, something about geometry that you only sort of pay attention to, before class is dismissed for lunch.

“That bell means it's lunch time, in case you didn't do your homework,” Ishida comments, retrieving a small lunchbox from his bag. “I'll be keeping an eye on you, so try not to cause trouble.”

You can see that many of the male students have already dispersed... you can feel that the big guy has gone up towards the roof. The two spiritually aware girls seem to have headed outside. Ishida is making no move to go anywhere. It seems he usually eats here, alone in a room full of people.

Since you asked, the recipe is about a pound each of diced sweet potatoes and turkey breast, a cup and change of dried mixed berries, 300-350ml of chicken stock (enough to cover the solid ingredients when they're in the slow-cooker), the juice of one orange, a diced red onion, and four sprigs of rosemary. Layer the sweet potato at the bottom of a slow-cooker, quickly cook the turkey and onion together in a skillet until the onion is done, then pour the juice and stock over it. Bring it to a boil, mix in the berries and rosemary along with whatever other seasoning you may want, and then pour it over the sweet potato.

Cook it on low for six to eight hours, and serve it over rice and/or steamed broccoli.

“I look forward to our talk,” you tell Ishida as you stand. “You can tell me how little Ryūken grew up.”

Before he can collect his wits, you've jumped out a window. Thankfully nobody sees you go, as they're all paying too much attention to whatever it is teenagers do these days.

“Inconspicuous,” Tenkotsuki congratulates you upon landing.

You find the girls of Ichigo's class sitting around under a tree, chatting. They spy you as you come closer, and one of the friendlier among them waves at you. “Hey, new girl!” she calls.

“Mind if I sit here?” you ask, holding up a lunchbox Tenkotsuki created for you out of thin air while your hands were behind your back.

“Not at all,” the tomboy from before nods, clapping her hand on the second girl from before, who's putting some sort of gooey substance on a loaf of bread. “I'm Arisawa Tatsuki. The redhead here is Inoue Orihime.”

The other girls introduce themselves in turn as you unwrap your lunchbox and tuck in.

“So, you're new in town?” a girl with glasses asks you... or rather, she asks your thighs. Seems she can't stop staring. “Do you need a place to stay? I can...”

“Shut it, weirdo,” Tatsuki sighs, smacking the other girl over the head. “Don't scare her off on the first day with that crap.”

That said, Tatsuki does seem rather like she's waiting for an answer.

“Actually,” Tenkotsuki interrupts in your mind, “there is an Inari shrine here we could stay in that would be well-suited to our purposes.”

>I'll be staying in the Inari shrine. My family runs one of their sister-shrines on Hokkaido.
>I'll be staying with the Kurosakis. I'm a distant relative, as it happens.

red wine sauce: heat oil, saute chopped mushrooms. after ~15 mins put some sugar over it until it's brown. A bit of vinegar (if it's to your taste), wait until it evaporates. Then soak it in red wine and boil till the liquid halves, add other spices and a bit of vegies you like, then simmer it for about half an hour.

at this stage you can get all the solids out, I usually let them stay. Put it back to a simmer, start adding flour and a bit fat or butter till you get something that's twice as liquid as you like, cook everything till it halves in volume again.

white wine sauce: I usually wing this. A mixture of sour cream, mustard, white wine and basil.

“I'll be staying at the Inari shrine,” you explain, before quickly thinking up a lie to explain it. “My family runs one of their sister shrines on Hokkaido, so I know the head priestess here.”

“I see,” Tatsuki replies with a nod. “Figured you for one of those classy girls.”

“Oh?”

Tatsuki smiles. “Your hairpiece. I've never seen one quite that pretty.”

“Ah,” you chuckle. “I wear it so habitually that sometimes I forget it's even up there.”

You brush your hand noncommittally past the piece of jewelry, producing a soft tinkling sound. “So, I couldn't help noticing there were a good number of empty seats. Some bug going around?”

“Maybe,” the tallest of your new classmates muses. “But it seems Ichigo and Rukia have been missing pretty often.”

All eyes fall on Tatsuki, who pauses as she eats. “What? Just because we dated for six months doesn't mean I've got all the answers, you know.”

“You're making too big a deal out of it.”

All the girls sit around looking thoughtful, so you do your best to fit in and match their expressions. “So does he go missing often?” you press.

“He's always been a bit of a delinquent,” Tatsuki replies softly. “Always getting into some kind of trouble.”

“That's why I've been worried,” Orihime adds. “What could those two be doing?”

“Ah, young love,” you pronounce dramatically, rubbing your chin and nodding to yourself the way the Old Man would at a moment like this. “That poor young boy must be smitten. I've seen it before.”

Several of the girls blush and stutter at the pure indecency of the suggestion, while Orihime seems lost in thought, gradually turning redder and redder until she's passed the level of her own hair. For her part, Tatsuki simply sighs and rubs the side of her head. It seems like you've gotten her thinking.

“Ichigo's not that smooth an operator,” she rebuts. “I do have a few ideas though...”

“Like a club activity?” the lesbian in the glasses chimes in.

One of the other girls shakes her head. “Off campus, during class? Get real, Chizuru.”

Tatsuki spares you a glance. “You said your family run a shrine? You mind if we talk for a second... just the two of us?”

Once you're far enough from the rest of the group that Tatskui is sure they can't hear you, she turns. “Do you know anything about people who can see spirits?”

“You're saying Ichigo can see spirits?” you ask, pretending to be surprised after making the connection. “That's a pretty rare gift, Tatsuki. I've never met anyone else who could do it.”

“You can see them too?” she asks, astonished.

You nod, secretly amused that you can finally start telling the truth about something. “All my life. I used to handle exorcisms back home.”

“I always used to think that stuff was a bunch of nonsense,” Tatsuki admits quietly. “But then, not long before we broke up, Ichigo told me he was starting to see ghosts. I think he started distancing himself because he was afraid something bad might happen... but recently, I've been seeing them too.”

So she wasn't born with the ability to see spirits, but she's gained that ability since then? That doesn't make much sense. Usually it doesn't work that way, unless you're a gemischt Quincy and it simply takes some time for your powers to manifest. You'd expect that from Ichigo, but this girl isn't a Quincy. She should either have powers, or not.

You ask Tenkotsuki and Rosa if they've heard of anything like this, which they admit they haven't. At least, nothing similar enough to this case to be worth investigating.

“Are you okay, Riku?” Tatsuki asks, snapping you back into focus.

“So,” you ask, trying to move the conversation along. “What kinds of ghosts do you see around here?”

“Mostly what you'd call the normal type, I guess,” Tatsuki offers, clearly unsure how to describe an ability she by all rights shouldn't have. “A lot of accountants and office workers.”

Tatsuki starts to look uncomfortable for a moment, which then passes. “That's all, really.”

You get the sense that she's hiding something from you, but you choose not to press her on it. Something has happened to her that clearly frightens her, and you are after all essentially a stranger. You can pretty much guess that it has something to do with a hollow though, given the way she's behaving.

“A free word of advice,” you offer as Tatsuki makes to return to her friends. “You see a big one in a mask? Run.”

Her eyes briefly pause as they meet yours, and the breeze catches your skirt and rustles your hairpiece. You hold her gaze, and for a moment she must feel a power in them before she nods in agreement.

“Good. Now let's get back to lunch before that Chizuru girl starts coming up with perverted reasons for us being gone so long.”

Tatsuki offers a nervous grin. “Don't sell her short, she's probably already started.”

Sure enough, you have to explain to Chizuru that you weren't off doing this and that with Tatsuki. She seems disappointed, but the impending smell of rain forces your little group to move towards the school building
