You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

Currently, you had made a detour to assist a Reikland town against an apparent group of raiders. However, in doing so, you've attracted the attention of Hess, who no doubt was coming to deal with the very same raiders, which she most likely thinks is you!

Now, analyzing the situation, you note that she's apparently alone, with just her Panther being visible. With Rock and Alex in Lagoon, that gave you a 2 to 1 numbers advantage. However, that wasn't to say they could be reinforcements arriving or in hiding...

"So, how about you surrender, and I may consider treating you nicely." Hess says, clear disappointment in her tone.

If you don't have those then anti-tank missiles (the type that dive down on the tank's weaker upper armour during terminal mode), artillery of air strikes also work well.

Merc's not gonna let anything happen to her. Gotta keep the waifuing option open, after all.

Fuck, we could probably hit her, as in HER, not her tank, with a shell and she'd walk away unharmed.
>>
>>43400299
No. Not at all. Look, do you have any idea what you're talking about? No, of course you don't. Sit down and let me tell you how it's done.

HESH is all about creating spall. It has a bunch of plastic explosive in it. It's called a squash head because what happens is the round hits a surface, the plastic explosive squashes against it, and then detonates. The intent is to cause massive spalling on the interior. Unfortunately, spall liners are a thing. It does not penetrate the side of the armor unless the explosive is enough to by itself.

HEAT, on the other hand, works by creating a jet of molten metal through the armor, penetrating into the compartment and fucking up everything inside.

Tell me, which is superior against sloped armor?

Wait, wait, we just PROTECTED this town, and you're repaying us by attacking us? We were responding to a distress call! If the shoe was on the other foot, and she was coming to the aid of a Tilean town, would we attack her?

No, we wouldn't, and she knows it. She remembers the talks we had that night atop the ramparts. She knows how we, and especially Tarin, feel about bandits. Between soldiers there is honor, but bandits are the enemies of all the world's armies.

Because defeating it is reliant on having a spall liner, and HEAT can be deflected just as easily as a normal round.

And because both are shit, stopped by spaced armor.

Remember, Reikland is generally stupid.

No, it cannot. Do you know anything about HEAT warheads? Anything at all? If you did, you'd know that the angling of the armor does absolutely jack shit. It's not going to glance off. The only effect the slope would have is the miniscule amount of extra protection gained through going a tiny bit more material.

"Rock, Alex, hang back in case she's got reinforcements coming." You instruct. "We'll take her on."

"Sure thing, kid, just don't get yourself killed." Rock affirms and you watch as Lagoon backs off back into the treeline. Hess, for her credit, doesn't attempt to engage, keeping her cannon trained solely on you.

The next few seconds were spent in tense silence, as if both of you were waiting to see who would try and shoot first.

You could try for a standard AP round to knock out her tank, but you're not sure if you could punch her front armor, even at this relatively close range. There still was a lot about the Panther you didn't know. A smoke round wouldn't do any damage, but it it certainly would blind her, hopefully allowing you to get in a more advantageous firing position.

"I suggest we fall back, Roy." Tarin says as she works the controls. "We can use the Dragonsbreath to cover our retreat."

>why in the hell should the Navy get the best steel?

(I hope I got my info right...)

The rivalry between army and navy was incredibly retarded to the point that before the war they would assassinate each other in order to gain favor.

Plus, there were 2 strategies for the Japanese to get resources, to go through China and Russia to get to the oil fields, or go through the Pacific to get the oil. The Pacific campaign seemed to be the best plan for them at the time, so they diverted resources to the Navy.

Six barrels of fury roar, slamming into Hess' Panther. The shells aren't enough to actually punch though its thick front armor, but the shock from multiple explosions as well as the incendiary effect basically blind the VT as its optics are destroyed or obscured. More ruined armor plate shears off like dead skin, clattering to the dirt below. Hess' cannon barks in response, landing a solid hit on Clementine's front armor, causing control panels to spark and smoke, and the air begins to feel thick and your eyes tear up from the stinging sensation.

"Roy!" Tarin coughs."We need to go!"

She did have a point. You had no more weapons left. Well, none except for Clementine herself...

"You're right, get us out of here!" You snap. "Full speed!"

Tarin nods and hits the throttles to full and Clementine goes into full gallop. Thankfully, Hess wasn't able to hit your engines or legs.

"Rock! Alex! We're breaking off!" You say. "What's going on on your end?"

"There's a platoon of Lynxes incoming. We were just about to engage them." Alex reports.

You turn out of your hatch and give one last look at Hess' panther, still smoldering and smoking from Dragonsbreath's assault. It was making no moves to pursue. Well, her objective was to protect the town, so you guess she didn't have any reason to chase you, especially given the damage her VT suffered.

"No point. Just break off and link up with the convoy." You say. "All our weapons are trashed so we have no way to defend ourselves."

"Yeesh, she really did a number on you, didn't she?" Rock tuts.

"Heh, well you should see the other tank." You retort. "Are they chasing after us?"

"Naw, they're making a beeline straight for the village. Looks like we're not high on their list of priorities."

Well, you guess that was something good in your favor, at least, even if the battle didn't end with the most ideal outcome. It's another few minutes of full gallop before you link back up with the main convoy.

"My god, what the hell happened?" Bannon says incredulously when he sees the condition Clementine is in.

"Sorry, we ran into some Reiks." You say.

"Damn. I knew it was a trap." Bannon grunts.

"Actually, it was real." Rock cuts in to back you up. "Unfortunately, the Reiks also heard it, too."

"Just our luck, huh?" Bannon sighs. "Did they follow you?"

"Nope. They didn't bother pursuing us." Rock explains.

"If we keep going at this pace they shouldn't be able to catch up to us anyways." Alex points out.

"B-but shouldn't we d-do some field repair on C-Clementine first?" Alfie stammers.

"Our engine and legs are still good." Tarin reminds you.

Jesus christ are you some kinda Nip cause your suicide for honor mentality is fucking annoying as hell.
>>
>>43402812
Hahahah More then you know, ancestry is Japanese so suck on that.

and no it's not suicidal however, he had the better tanks and roughly better in number, if he held his line and commanded he could have at least stalled until reinforcements come.

There's a difference of 'Muh honor' and holding your ground, idiot.

So how can Hess be saved from the waifu bin and become the hero of her own story a la Char Aznable?
>>

She needs a separate love interest and then a righteous goal to pursue

"No, we should keep moving. We'll do repairs once we link up with the others." You say.

"Good enough. We keep moving then." Bannon responds. "All right, come on, let's go!"

Your convoy continues the long slog down the road. However, you notice the sky getting darker and darker. You're on the right path, though, judging from all of the wrecked Lynxes and ransacked Reik outposts you pass, meaning you were definitely on the right trail.

"Goddamnt, it looks like Artois pushed farther than he said he would." Bannon sighs in exasperation.

"Well, it's not like we didn't expect this to happen." Parker points out. "Assuming they stop to camp for the night, which they should, we can probably reach them before sunrise at this pace."

"I don't know. Forced marches are a drain on strength and morale." Bannon grumbles.

"But do we really want to risk camping out for the night out here?" Parker asks.

"Well, there's some high ground there where it'll be tough to ambush us, and it'll give us a good vantage point." Rock says. "Should be safe enough to camp out there."

"Hey, wouldn't those Reiks have figured out where we were going? What if hey chase us, or let their friends know?" Axel says with uncharacteristic caution.

Actual fucking character development that doesn't involve Roy or Tarin. She lacks depth--you could really replace her character with a yappy dog or a talkative cockatiel and there wouldn't be much of a difference in interactions she's had with Roy.

"Let's keep moving." You put in your two cents. "The sooner we get there, the sooner we can relax."

"Fair enough." Bannon says in agreement. "All right, we keep moving!"

The motherfucker's character profile has him in a goddamn helmet obscuring his face! He's about as generic as a protag can get--hell, the only way he'd get any more generic is if he was voiced by Nolan sodding North! Oh sure, he's a backwoods hick and a panzersexual, but there are times I feel like we're just playing a goddamn Jager expy.

The night feels long and tiring, and every moment, you have to keep a careful eye out to make sure there wasn't any sort of enemy ambush lying in wait. Considering your main weapons were inoperable and you didn't have a chance to reload your recoiless rifles, all you had to contribute to a fight was your machine guns and Clementine's feet. Good if you were fighting infantry, but not so useful against other VTs. Fortunately, the night proves to be uneventful, and you reach Artois' rearguard positions without mishap. However, at the checkpoint, in addition to the men at arms guarding it, you see a rather familiar scientist standing in the middle of the road as she gives your VT a dull stare.

"Well it's about time you got here." Egan says coolly. "I heard you have a bunch of new things for me to play with."

>And that's it for tonight! Unfortunately, due to a combination of Blizzcon and tests next week, I may not be able to run Vertical Tanks next saturday, so we'll have to wait for the week after if that happens! Stay tuned on twitter for any updates!
