No. No, no, no, no.

You clamp down on your rising nausea. You can't go back like this. Your father... No. That's not an option. You look around the hut. Many pots, most of them in clay, some in glass. Herbs drying or preserved, ointments. You face the little old woman again and she shrinks even further from your glare.

“You can do something about it, right?”

She frowns. She doesn't follow.

“I can't be like this. It needs to... To go. You said you were a witch, you have a mixture for this. You must have. I can't be the first one who came to you with this...this condition. I can't.”

Too vague. She doesn't get what you want.

“You must have!”

Can't bring yourself to say it. But something makes understanding dawn on her face. And disgust too.

“No, no, no. Child holy. You mother,” she starts, and then keeps on babbling in her barbaric language, making big gestures with her hands. Is she chiding you? She doesn’t know one thing about the world you live in, and she’s chiding you? You’d laugh if you could.

>Make her understand. If it comes down to that, painfully.
>Restrain her, and try to brew something yourself.

“There is nothing holy about this. They—They just...”

You deflate, and your grip on her wrist weakens until it is gone. The witch pats down the blankets and touches you on the shoulder in the exact same way your milk mother did when you were feeling upset as a kid.

“It’s not like I didn’t know, it is war, but maybe, I thought...” you start, then fumble on the words for no reason.

“Tell,” she says.

And you tell her. How a stray bullet broke your manometer (‘It measures pressure. And with that I could gauge how high Srahen was flying, and... Nevermind.’), the clouds, the fall right on an enemy entrenched position, the capture (‘I killed many. Lots. Srahen too. But there were too much, and Srahen was wounded, and I had to surrender.’), and what followed. In the middle of your telling, the witch gets up and prepares something like tea and forces a cup into your hands, unclenching them first. Then you talk about Lt. Ayuz “saving” you. The months of jail. Your escape.

“And... I can’t go back to my family like this. I will lose everything. My dragon, even, maybe. I won’t be able to marry. You see, you have to help me!”

The old woman pats your thigh and kisses you on the head. Somehow you’ve ended up in her arms, being rocked and cradled.

“Not baby fault. No fair. But... Yes. Can do it. But you hurt. And bleed. Makes you hot and bleed. Then baby dies. If you want it.”

“It sounds dangerous. Is it?”

“Oh, yes, very.” She touches you on the belly. “Made for baby, not lose them. Not nature. Want it?”

“Yes. Yes, please.”

The old witch shakes her head, but starts bustling around in the small cabin nonetheless. Your eyes track her every movement, even if you don’t understand one world of what she mumbles with her decrepit mouth. A sense of relief washes over you. You’ll be free, free of every shackle. And your father will be proud of you. For escaping the enemy, for making it back home, and for fitting his idea of you.

“Drink this. I give you more day after, and day after again. But then you leave. What soldiers do is evil, but what you do evil too. Sorry but you leave.”

“I see,” you reply and drink the surprisingly nice-smelling decoction before she has another change of mind. “I’ll be out of your hair. I have to go back home before they catch my scent again anyway.”

*

You’re dying, you can feel yourself dying, you bleed and you bleed and you bleed.

*

In the morning of the day you were to leave, Srahen wakes you up with a low growl. Enemies. The witch is nowhere to be seen. The sheet is bloodied, and you’re feeling weak, thirsty and hungry. Putting on your clothes is a grueling task, and walking the few steps out of the cabin and to your dragon is even worse.

“Srahen?”

You look in the direction he is facing, and you understand the reason of his growling. Dust on the road. Horseriders.

Why do I have a feeling aborting the baby will have drastic consequences later on?
>>
>>43407839

>>
>>43407848
That and we drank a witch's poison and she warned us it's not natural. Probably will back fire due to magic or will not be able to reproduce.

>>
>>43407873
You kinda have to be. Herbal abortion only works for the first month or so of pregnancy, we were already cutting it real close
>>
>>43407883
Yeah but even worse if we are barren. Again I feel like we were hasty by not asking more questiosn about it, or accepting a witch's poison
>>
>>43407899
is there a source for what your saying?
>>
>>43407899
I think we were imprisoned for 2-3 months.
>>
>>43407883
We're already considered an "inferior" bride if the setting runs on traditional old school morality, due to being in a "mannish" profession like soldiering.
>>
So yeah, I just got here, so I don't quite understand why we didn't listen to the witch. At least ask her to give us options.
>>
>>43407997
In our defense, we're not exactly in a great place mentally, right now. We lost a LOT of blood, we just escaped from a prison camp, the dragon we are bonded with had his beautiful, magnificent wings clipped...
So a poor decision made hastily out of panic isn't that out of place.
>>
>>43407997
>At least ask her to give us options.
Probably mostly because people felt like they'd get kicked out if they gave the Witch so much as an inch.

Hey we're magic that has to count for something in our favour.

Given our recently weakened further state it would be hazardous to both mother and child to try and carry it to term as well. Too many complications and factors unknown.

>>43408047
and are you pulling stuff our of your ass? Because the whole 'Herbal' potion thing being not effective was not very credible.
>>
>>43408078
>Yeah but so it the witch,
What.
>>
>>43408031
Didn't we get kicked out still by accepting?

That doesn't make sense? Do you mean that we don't trust the witch? If so, we drank an abortion potion made by her, which requires a lot more trust.
>>
>>43408088
I meant that the witch is magical too, or at least more attuned to nature considering what she is saying.

We still got kicked out by taking the potion is what i'm saying.

>>43407899

What, this post >>43408031 said "Probably mostly because people felt like they'd get kicked out if they gave the Witch so much as an inch."

If we gave the witch options which we didn't by accepting the potion.
>>
>>43408177
The witch is Anti-abortion. She let it happen because we're a rape victim, but we have to leave anyways. Thus it makes no sense for us to get kicked out be relenting to the witch's opinions, which is what his initial post replies to.

There is no glory to a last stand, and you know that is how it would turn out. You hurry as much as you can in the retrieval of your effects and weapons. One last look around, and you’re gone, Srahen’s bounding lope devouring the leagues. You don’t want to set a foot in the forest, and keep to the road, deserted because of the war and the shifting frontlines.

*

The night is hell. You can’t sleep, but the bleeding stops. But you can’t sleep, or the nightmares come.

*

The next day, you start to recognize some features. Far-off southside, is that not the Xer range with its sleeping giant shape? Yes, yes it is, and your heart leaps in your chest. You can almost see your homeland from the hill on which you’re standing. And those plains ahead that keep on rolling, are they not surrounding the Blun? So, this way is the heart of the Lyrian, the capital of the Kingdom, Cliath. Home, home!

“You! Get off your mount, and kneel on the ground!” shouts a man you can’t see. His villager accent is thick enough to cut with a knife. You look around, but you see nothing but trees.

“Now!”

An ambush. No, no, no, not again. Not this.

“On. The. Ground!”

You’re shaking as you get off Srahen, but it’s only because you’re exhausted. There is nothing to fear. Nothing. You kneel, or rather you let yourself fall on your knees, your head lowered.

There’s some rustling in front of you. Smart of them to avoid coming from Srahen’s side. They stay far away from him, they must’ve already seen a dragon in action. Behind, you can hear your partner snarling.

“...dragon?”

What? Did they speak to you?

“Why do you have a dragon with you, bitch? Speak, or I shoot!”

“Because I’m Larre Ailise di Heldeqi zu Bluwmik, Knight-Lieutenant of the Order of the Dragon, and a mongrel such as you will not speak to me in such a way,” you say, your voice clear despite your state of weakness.

You close your eyes and clench your teeth around your tongue. You can only hear whispers coming from them, everything else is deafened by the voracious growls of Srahen.

“Anybody can claim himself a Dragon Knight. Show us your Meld, if you are as you claim,” replies their leader after a moment. There is something about his way of speaking, a memory on the tip of your tongue. One of them starts making a salacious remark, but a slap shuts him up right away.

You stand shakily, and lift your head, looking in the direction you last heard the squad’s leader’s voice. He is easy to identify, a tall man his face long and angular, as if it was cut out of wood by a hatchet. He looks at your eyes, and then falls to his knees, the men who haven’t seen your face following suit in confusion.

“Knight-Lieutenant, I pray the God-King you will excuse my language. Even in such circumstances, it was unforgivable of me.”

The memory bothering you leaps at the forefront of your mind. The harbor town of Ionica, the brown-faced fishermen shouting at each other in that seaborn accent. That’s where this man comes from. A fellow countryman.

“Whether or not your rudeness is forgivable is not for you to decide, hm...”

“Ah! The name is Alin Denar, Squire-Sergent, ma’am!”

“Squire-Sergent, then. And I decide that under those circumstances, you’re all too forgiven.”

“Ah, thank your kindness, Knight-Lieutenant.”

You take a good look at him. A Squire? Without noble blood, if you are to believe his name and speech? And only leading a squad, despite his grade? Something isn’t adding up here. This is very interesting.

“If I may...,” he starts, and you motion to him to continue. “We should head for cover again, we have a camp not far from here, if you wanted to rest.”

“In the forest?”

“Ah, yes, indeed.”

“No strange occurences?”

He looks at you with a frown. “Not that I heard of, ma’am.”

“Good. Good. Let’s go. Lead the way.”

Two of his men accompany you, the others have disappeared without you even being aware of their departure.

*

After reassuring the medic about your state of affairs, pronouncing those few words fatal for male ears and sending him away blushing, leaving you to change your clothing and devour your meal, you speak to the Squire.

“Now, and I’m sorry to cut short the pleasantries, and I promise you I am glad to speak again to a countryman, but what sort of mission needs a Squire leading only one squad of soldiers into enemy lands? Assassination?” you ask, wrapped in a blanket that is definitely not standard issue, given its warmth.

He looks down. Trying to decide whether or not he trusts you. He looks at Srahen, curled around you. And probably understands he doesn’t have much of a choice.

“A few days ago, we intercepted a report. It seems Firmen military has gotten hold of a source of magic, and has natural philosophers examining it. Magic is holy for us, but to them, it’s nothing more than a path to weapons, and we can’t allow them to desecrate it in order to turn the tide of the war. We are to exfiltrate the commander of the outpost to whom was destined the intercepted missive, and ask him a few questions. And then see from thereon, which requires somebody above a certain grade.”

Despite his accent, he speaks very vell, for a commoner. You feel yourself drifting to sleep, rocked by his voice.

“All we have is his name, Ayuz.”
