You are... well, you're not really sure what to call yourself right now. Though you think of yourself as “Kusajishi Riku” for the sake of convenience, three souls have gone into your birth. The Captain of Ninth Division is one of them, along with the shadow of Rosa Rosette, from whose death she and Riku would be born. The third soul belongs to Kusajishi Riku's zanpakuto, Tenkotsuki, who was once the being referred to by humans as Tamamo no Mae.

The truth of the matter, however, is that Tamamo no Mae was once one of three aspects of Inari Ōkami, identified as “Grain” or the “Daughter” of the trio. A part of her still identifies with this heritage, though the centuries have led to her emergence as a distinct being far divorced from “mother” or “father”. So you're not sure you could even call yourself “Inari” at the moment either: more properly, that honor would be reserved for the being you found waiting for you at the largest Shinto shrine in Karakura town.

“Now, dear,” the nine-tailed kitsune seated across from you speaks gently, “is that any way to treat your own mother when she's come all this way just to see you?”

You sigh, and shake your head in disbelief. As much as you want to believe that Inari's words are earnest, you've learned over the centuries the value of caution when dealing with the divine. No intelligent beings in this universe are without their own agendas, and the only way in which gods differ is that they are better at being subtle about it.

“It has been too long,” you agree enthusiastically. “You must have been so busy running the universe, to have never found time to check on one of your own aspects.”
>1/2
>>
>>43409092
Now it's Inari's turn to sigh. “If I am being honest, I could have easily intervened at any time. But had I done so, you would have never grown up the way you did. You learned the value of discretion through your mistakes and misfortunes, did you not?”

“Mom of the year,” you frown, your tone heavily sarcastic, “every year since the dawn of time.”

“But you know that my decision had a purpose,” Inari counters smugly. “And you understand that this decision led to the best possible outcome, both for you and for the world.”

“And you know that I'll be unhappy about it regardless,” you nod, “and you've accepted that.”

“I have.”

The two of you remain seated in comfortable silence for several seconds while a servant spirit enters the shrine's main hall with two cups of sake and a bottle on a tray, leaving them in the middle of what to any human observer must seem an empty room.

Evening has crept upon you, and the sun hangs low in the sky outside the shrine. The grounds are bathed in a warm red glow, drowning out almost all other colors, and the shade of the trees and eaves grows ever deeper.

There are no true "siblings" here, as Tamamo no Mae was one component of Inari it/herself. A relatively minor component to be sure, but not strictly speaking a "child" in the biological sense.

It's complicated, but Japanese mythology is like that. So many local and regional variations and conflations that it's difficult to make sense of anything.

“I'm not coming back, if that's what you're thinking,” you state flatly.

After blinking in surprise, Inari laughs in delight. “Oh my, you still have that habit of taking everything I say the wrong way! No, my dear, I am not here to drag anyone off to become a goddess just yet. I am here as a favor to another... a goddess whose own power rivals my own.”

“Izanami-no-mikoto?” you guess, trying to figure out who Inari may be referring to.

Your mother shakes her head solemnly. “No, dear. I do not speak of the Dead Goddess, though it is perhaps best that I do not speak the name of she who asked that I be here. She has gone to great lengths to ensure the existence of the being with whom I am presently speaking.”

Another goddess, who Inari refuses to name? More importantly, a powerful one? You're struggling to decide who might fit the vague description you've been given, though no names are coming to mind. You suppose it makes sense, considering the secrecy with which the deities usually act. And if she really has been meddling, it would be understandable to hide her identity for as long as possible.

“So what exactly are you here to do?”

Inari bows ever so slightly towards you, a polite gesture rather than anything indicating actual respect. “I have come with a warning, on her behalf. The Aizen boy is not the only threat to come... one must ever be cautious of those who seek to use chaos as a distraction for their own twisted schemes.”

You may or may not find out later, but Amaterasu is actually kind of nice. At least to the Tenkotsuki-parts of Riku's being, the image of Amaterasu killing off an aspect of Inari for potentially shady reasons just doesn't compute.

To be fair, Amaterasu is the universe itself. KoH has said that something happened that seriously fucked up the Japanese afterlife a while back. Amaterasu being offed and replaced by the Soul King to stop the universe from collapsing certainly qualifies. Though Word of God obviously renders this theory obsolete.

“I have only one serious question,” you reply, Inari refilling your sake dish. Unfiltered and strong... just the way it used to be before the Japanese became obsessed with clear, dry sake. Such a waste, but as the goddess of sake your mother knows the taste of proper alcohol when she encounters it. The bottle she has brought is without peer in the human world. A small token of reconciliation, you reckon.

“Was this nameless goddess responsible for Tamamo no Mae's death?”

Inari nods gently. “She was. Though I was initially displeased when I learned of her actions, her account of events quieted my objections. I ask for your patience in this matter.”

“So you say she had a good enough reason for it?” you scoff. “I've gained enough wisdom over the years not to say anything hurtful until I hear that convincing account for myself... but it's a very close thing.”

You pour Inari a fresh cup, and continue to speak as she sips delicately. “So what do you think?”

“About this town, about you, or about the boy?”

“All three, I suppose.”

“Well,” Inari smiles. “I see my daughter has bonded with an interesting young shinigami. The three distinct aspects of your being I felt when you approached reminded me of our own existence, back when there were still three of us.”

“Would you believe that it brings me pride as a mother to see your success?”

You shrug. “Maybe.”

“And you would be correct to be skeptical,” Inari giggles. “However it is true. You have made me quite proud.”
>1/?
>>
>>43410321
“As for Karakura town,” Inari continues somewhat more seriously than her light tone before would suggest was possible, “you realize that this place is a Jūreichi?”

Actually, you consider as you frown, that makes a lot of sense. “I suppose it explains the town's inhabitants, to an extent.”

“Many spiritually aware beings are drawn here,” Inari explains. “Like so many moths drawn to an invisible flame, never fully realizing it themselves. However this only partially explains the situation. The other factor involved is the boy.”

“Kurosaki Ichigo,” you mutter. “My nephew by adoption.”

“I suppose that makes him my great-nephew!” Inari laughs mischievously. “I wonder if I should introduce myself to him one of these days?”

“He'll be confused enough when he finds out about his father,” you shake your head, trying not to laugh too hard at the image yourself. “No need to overstimulate the poor boy.”

“Regardless,” Inari continues, “he will have to accept his heritage soon enough. If he does not, the consequences may be dire indeed.”

“What, so little faith in your own daughter?” you chide your mother. “That's... actually a lot like you.”

“You wound me!” Inari exclaims dramatically. “Truly, I mean that the future is deeply uncertain. Though I understand your potential, recall that three arrows together are not so easily broken. And young Ichigo has the potential to become quite a sturdy arrow in his own right.”

I wouldn't say just the shinto one. Coyote Stark hailed from the Native American Pantheon of gods and he ended up in Japan's Hueco Mundo. It wouldn't be a big stretch to think that gods from other pantheons would cross spiritual boundaries and end up in afterlifes not their own.

There's only one Hueco Mundo. Consider it the lowest "plane", below even the living world.

The "higher planes" would be the various world afterlifes, while anything "higher" than that is as foreign and ill-understood as the Garganta.

“You shouldn't make it such a long time before we see each other again, mother,” you sigh. “I've met Yoruichi's parents, so it's only fair that she meet mine some time.”

Inari snickers to herself. “My, bringing home a mate already? How ambitious of you!”

“You're one to talk,” you shush her. “Which one of us reproduced with herself again?”

“In my defense, have you met me? I'm quite a catch.”

Inari rises to her feet with inhuman grace, leaving the last cup worth of sake on the tray in the center of the floor. She then turns to leave.

“Let that cup sit there,” she instructs you. “A token for the head priest.”

Before sleeping, you send a message to Yoruichi and Rangiku detailing what you have discovered so far on your trip to Karakura town, and wishing them both well.

The next morning, the head priest of the Karakura shrine would be treated to a sip of elixer so far beyond human reckoning he would forswear alcohol for the rest of his natural life, swearing that nothing he imbibed could possibly be more than a pale imitation of what he found that day.

June 18th, your second day in Karakura town.

You arrive at Karakura High exhausted from having been up late last night, and just a little hung over from the drinking. It WAS after all quite a large and potent bottle, and your physical body is having a tougher time dealing with the repercussions.

Tenkotsuki and Rosa have been remarkably quiet, possibly due to the revelations of last night.

"I couldn't sleep last night," Tatsuki grumbles at Orihime. "I just had this really weird feeling, like something super-important was going on and I was missing out on it."

"Don't worry, Tatsuki!" her cheerful friend encourages her. "I get that feeling all the time!"

You keep your response to yourself.

The lecture this morning is on the Meiji restoration, meaning you can safely doze through the session to catch up on lost sleep. When questioned you give fairly detailed answers of the sociopolitical and economic factors surrounding the conflict and its repercussions, apparently going well beyond what's written in these "text books" the teacher keeps mentioning. Mathematics is stupidly easy as well, mostly consisting of things Kisuke had to walk your through ages ago just to explain the basic principles of his own work.

Even Rukia seems surprised that you can answer some of the questions you do.

Finally, the lunch-bell rings. Rukia is invited to eat with the girls, while Ichigo is drug off by that big Latino boy.

The other half of it is that being a shinigami in general means you have a long time to learn non-combat skills. Even Riku, who struggled to learn guitar at first, now kicks ass at not only guitar but bass guitar, cello, harp, and a few other instruments besides. You decide to follow your nephew. This time the big lout doesn't seem to be heading for the roof, but for an unused classroom on the top floor of the building. Inside... oh, inside.

Guitars and amps. Ah, you're on your home field now!

The giant seems to notice you first. “Ichigo... the new girl.”

Ichigo's head whips around and his eyes widen. You simply smile and wave.

“Hi there, Ichigo!” you greet him, raising a few eyebrows at your informal tone. “So this is where you ran off to?”

“Yeah, we come up here to mess around sometimes,” he scratches at his head. “Lately I haven't been dropping by as often though.”

“You know Ichigo?” the giant asks. “My name is Yasutora.”

He offers his hand, which you shake. “Kusajishi Riku. I'm Ichigo's aunt.”

Yasutora's hand stops in place mid-shake. “Did you say... aunt?”

“Yup! I'm his old man's little sister... all by adoption, of course.”

The boy who was staring at your legs before groans. “Aww, man. Now that makes it weird.”

“Keigo...” Ichigo growls. “What do you mean, weird?”

“Well, nothing!” he insists nervously. “It's just that, well... I mean, have you SEEN your aunt, Ichigo?”

“Interesting,” you mutter, picking up a guitar from its stand while ignoring Ichigo and Keigo's argument. “A flipped leftie Stratocaster? I see someone did their homework.”

“You play?” Yasutora asks quietly.

Some of our close allies have guessed at it and mostly got it right.

But I don't think anybody actually knows the full extent of Tenkotsuki's Bankai except Riku.

It's glorious bullshit though. Nobody is allowed to use any external expressions of spiritual power, while Riku can still cast her overpowered spells, made even more overpowered by Tenko's Shikai powers.

“Yeah, though I'm more interested in martial arts. I could give you a demo if you'd like?”

Yasutora looks at you strangely. “Which do you mean?”

“Either one?” you shrug, plugging the guitar in your hands into the smallest amp you can find. You decide to play Little Wing... you always liked playing that one with Yoruichi, and they seem to approve of your playing. They'd better... took you more than a century to get this good.

Keigo stares at you slack-jawed. “And you say you're more into marital arts? How good are you at that?”

“You don't wanna know,” Ichigo grumbles. “So... Aunt Riku?”

You're secretly tickled that he's already calling you that, but you try and look neutral while noodling away at the guitar in your hands. “Yeah?”

“I'm going into town to watch a show called Ghost Bust that's filming at the hospital,” he explains. “This weird medium dude exorcises spirits or something. Lots of us from school are going, including Rukia.”

“Wanna tag along?”

>I guess I could put in an appearance and be social.

“I guess,” you sigh, scratching lightly at your ear. “None of that supernatural crap you see on TV really interests me, but I'd be curious to know how much of a moron this guy really is.”

Ichigo looks like he was expecting you to say no, or perhaps even hoping for it. But hey, this gives you something to do with the evening.

Afternoon classes are just as boring as the previous lectures were, and you spend most of your time napping. At some point the teacher wakes you with a question, demanding that you balance a rather complex chemical equation and predict the mass of the final product, which you actually have to ponder for a moment before solving in front of the class.

The rest of the class, she simply lets you nap without harassment.

The ringing of the bell wakes you from a beautiful nap, and you actually feel quite well-rested.

“Well, look who decided to finally join us!” Tatsuki teases. “You back among the living?”

“In a manner of speaking,” you yawn. “Whaddeye miss?”

“Nothing much. Hey, Ichigo told me you're into martial arts?”

You quickly dress in a typical muay thai uniform, and Tatsuki does the same.

“Light contact sparring for now,” she suggests. “You agree?”

Nodding silently, you adopt a conventional stance. You note with some interest that Tatsuki takes a southpaw stance, despite the fact that you know for a fact that she's right handed: while you were awake today, you saw her writing with her right hand. Interesting choice on her part. It may be telling about her strengths as a fighter.

“Tenkotsuki,” you think loudly to yourself. “Reiatsu at bare minimum. Human ability only.”

“Understood, Lady Riku.”

The first exchange of blows proves interesting. Her punching power is excellent, as she puts a good amount of force into each blow from her hips, and her kicks come out very quickly. Most impressively you struggle to land a hit on her as her fists or elbows always seem to be in the way, followed quickly by her feet or knees. It seems she has a solid grasp of the Chinese principle of “Eight Gates”, using this knowledge to redirect your force or simply strike first.

She's... actually beating you. Whether this is because you're so rusty from relying on your reiatsu for so long to supplant technical skill, or because you've grown too used to having a sword in hand, you're not sure. It may even be the case that the girl is really just that good.

“How do you like that?” Tatsuki asks, dancing just out of your range. “Top girl in Japan when it comes to using my fists!”

You'd believe it.

“You need a break, champ?” Rosa taunts.

Lowering yourself to her level made this a possibility.

Normally Riku's hand to hand fighting would be heavily enhanced by her reiatsu: using that power to strike faster, stronger, and cleaner than any human could dream of doing is what makes hakuda different from human martial arts. Bu right now it's technique versus technique, and Tatsuki is a natural at this.

“I'll admit I wasn't expecting a challenge at all,” you tell Tatsuki, taking a moment to loosen up your muscles. “You're quite good. Color me impressed, but don't think I'm done yet!”

You shift your form again, to something a little more familiar. Your center of balance lowers, and you prepare to utilize one of the old styles Yoruichi taught you.

Tatsuki looks at you in surprise. “What are you doing?”

“The Heihuquan style,” you explain, “of the Henan temple. I've grown too used to relying on internal power, so I figure I should fight you with something a little more external.”

“You're using kung fu?” she asks skeptically. “I always thought that was more for meditation?”

You grin. “I've only ever used this style against one opponent before, so let's see what it's worth together.”

This time, it's a completely different result. Your own control over the Eight Gates, though you rarely rely on it, is even greater than Tatsuki's when using a style like Heihuquan that's well-suited to it. You even find yourself deflecting her fists with your feet, allowing you to deliver a sweeping strike at the back of her knee that nearly brings her down in the first few seconds. Your blows may not have as much force as hers like this without your reiatsu to back them up, but your experience and speed are winning out over power.

After kicking off her leading knee to gain distance and avoid a bolo punch aimed at your side, you pirouette and land lightly on your toes with a smile on your face.

“The hell is going on?” she pants, and you can feel her spiritual power flaring in frustration. “What did you do?”

“Nothing,” you sigh. “It's just I've never been much of a stand-up fighter when it comes to empty hand style. I like to move.”

“You were giving me a handicap?” she asks you. “There's no way that can be true.”

>I was evaluating you. Fighting on your terms rather than in my own style.

Before I say anything, because clearly you haven't had enough people say this to you before, you're a dumb, pretentious, uppity child.

The fact you're even arguing against having to roll has clearly demonstrated you've never played an actual tabletop game, and hate the concept of anything but the DM lavishly kissing your ass. You are at your core arguing against this resembling a tabletop game. You are arguing against rolling, in this instance the most bare bones of systematization of combat, because power levels. In a scenario where everyone's equal, you know so little of life and reality you see skill as magic. Like skilled people don't have to try. Like they can't possibly fail.

If the scenarios were reversed, and we were fighting a much more skilled opponent, but said opponent was physically on our level, you're arguing that they should just beat us automatically without us even getting a chance to roll.

You clearly prefer mindless, predictable power fantasies to conflict and tension, and hate being challenged intellectually and emotionally. There are better quests for people of your mindset. There are a ton of DBZ quests out there, with people as ignorant and far gone from reality as you are, that don't see you for what you are as a completely assblasted, tantrum-prone faggot baby. Go 'win' over there.

Ok pastor put down the bible, get off your lectern and QUIT PREACHING!

Seriously if anyone's being a shit right now it's you. he was pointing out that Riku is a master at hand to hand who has literally hundreds of years of experience over the fifteen year old Tatsuki. Of course we had to roll and I bet he understands that, it's just that we expected a lower DC if anything.

“I wanted to see how you fight,” you explain, “so I engaged you on your terms. I meant no disrespect.”

“That being said, show me what you can really do. The power you found after starting to see ghosts.”

Tatsuki's jaw nearly drops, and she slides out of her stance. “I... how?”

“You feel things,” you continue, taking a wide circle around the young human, “don't you? Things you can tell aren't the spirits of the dead. You can tell that Ichigo has it. You can tell that Ishida has it. You can tell that I have it. Or am I wrong?”

Tatsuki remains silent.

You nod, reiatsu coursing through your own body as you breathe. “I thought so. Let that power fill you, Tatsuki. Harness it, and release it as you strike. Let it be your strength.”

“Really, Lady Riku?” Tenkotsuki asks in surprise. “You are teaching hakuda to a human?”

“Let's see what happens,” you reply silently. “I won't be able to get a feel for what's happening here otherwise.”

it's a start for Tatsuki's development.
Better than a poor performance.
>>
>>43414311
Tatsuki shuts her eyes in concentration, building what by your standards is a small amount of reiatsu within her body, in what must for her be the result of colossal effort.

Twisting her body, she places as much strength as she can behind the strike on top of the reiatsu she's pumped into it. The blow hits with enough force to kill an ordinary human on the spot, but not nearly enough to even bruise your skin as it connects with the back of your wrist. You're careful to allow that force to slide you back on your feet to ensure that the girl doesn't injure herself by mistake.

When she opens her eyes, Tatsuki seems surprised to find you grinning at her. All around the room, pieces of sporting equipment have been strewn about by the unfocused blast of reiatsu as well, meaning it looks quite a mess.

“Not bad,” Rosa muses silently. “For a complete novice, at least.”

Tatsuki however is more mindful of the fact that you've stopped her best punch with seemingly no effort or injury.

“What the hell are you?” she pants wearily. It seems she overexerted herself. Her control must really be poor.

You lower your arm and raise your hands in a gesture of uncertainty. “These days, I ask myself that a lot.”

“I could eat,” you declare loudly. “What about you? I'll treat you if you tell me about Ichigo.”

Tatsuki stares at you for a moment in disbelief before slumping over. “Yeah, for some reason I'm starving. But can you tell me first, what's your power like?”

You shoot her a sly grin. “Pray that you never find out, Tatsuki.”

After getting cleaned up, you allow Tatsuki to lead you into the city in search of food. First you stop at a place called Unagi-ya, which turns out not to even be an eel restaurant. Then you eventually settle on a place called MOS Burger that serves something from the States called hamburgers and root beer.

“How have you never had a cheeseburger before?” Tatsuki asks incredulously as you devour your second.

You shrug. “I eat a lot of traditional foods, and if I'm not drinking tea it's either beer or sake.”

“You drink?” Tatsuki asks. “Seriously, I know you're probably older than the rest of us but you can't be THAT old.”

Ignoring that, you make a bid to polish off your fries. “So tell me, how long have you known my nephew?”

“Who?”

You gesture vaguely with your drink in-hand. “Ichigo, I mean. And before you ask, the answer is adoption.”

After her initial surprise, Tatsuki begins to explain her relationship with Ichigo.

The first time she met Ichigo was at karate practice when they were children, where she walloped him good. According to her he cried a lot at first, but every time his mother would come to pick him up and he would immediately cheer up. In fact, she seems to talk about Masaki quite a lot. This continued for a while, until they were about nine. It was then that Ichigo suddenly seemed to take karate more seriously. He grew a backbone, and his skills developed to the point he could even challenge Tatsuki on a good day. Tatsuki doesn't really know what happened.

In school Ichigo began to grow a tough-guy demeanor, always looking out for his friends like Yasutora. It was around this time that he and Tatsuki started dating, which seemed to make his parents happy. But eventually they drifted apart when Ichigo started seeing spirits, as you've already heard.

"Lately he's been worrying me," she sighs as you walk towards the abandoned hospital. "He's running around with that Rukia girl, and I can tell they're doing something dangerous."

there is an abnormal large number of hollows here but also a large number of spiritually aware humans that we can leverage for their own defense. can we just make it official to have one or two shinigami here to train/ advise the humans on dealing, as well as providing assistance if the humans need it?

You spare her a mischievous glance. “You want to know what they're up to?”

After a moment, Tatsuki nods silently.

“Then follow me. Say nothing. Stay close to me. And for the love of all that's holy, do not involve yourself in anything you're about to see.”

“I have a feeling something's going to happen tonight, and I'd hate for you to miss the show.”

Aizen's whole thing is that he wants to be god because he's already so much stronger than his peers. He facilitated Ichigo's growth just so he could have someone to fight on equal ground.

so now we have a sexy woman who
A) Is as strong if not stronger than him, he has no real evidence either way
B) has been fighting a cold war against him in a way that has his respect as a schemer
C) and is probably the most unorthedox reaper besides himself, we are willing to go just as far outside the law as he is to make our goals reality.

overall we're probably his ideal woman...
