Here again. The same, familiar darkness that always takes you when you try to sleep. For once, this place doesn't fill you with dread – merely a weary kind of resignation. This is your death, you've since realised, dredged up from some unnatural memory of the old world, of the previous cycle. A peaceful death, Petra had told you – you wonder if you can believe that. Perhaps you can, because for the first time ever, you don't feel like you're alone here.

Looming out of the darkness above you in the hollow eyed form of a human skull, the face set in exactly the kind of unchanging grimace you'd expect from a skull. It should be a frightful sight, but rather than finding it spooky or scary, you take comfort in that skull's presence. Not just the skull, but the strong arms that hold you in a tight, protective embrace. You might be dying here, within this memory, but you're in no danger. A strange thought – a paradox.

Your name is Mia Vespucci, and you'd be happy to die here, in the embrace of your nameless guardian. So, in the end, that's what you do. The life drains away from your body slowly, and without ceremony. When the last drop is gone, you wake in the real world to find someone knocking at your front door.

Rubbing a thin layer of gunk from your eyes, you stumble through your empty house and glance at the clock. Half an hour earlier than when you'd arranged to meet everyone – perhaps someone prefers to play it safe? The knock sounds again as you're haphazardly brushing your hair into some semblance of order so, muttering under your breath, you finally answer it.

“Mia dear, I'm glad to see you back amongst us,” Elliot says smoothly as he steps into your house before you can even open your mouth to make the offer, “We were all really very worried, you know, when you pulled that little disappearing act.”

...Well, you're back now. He's a bit early, isn't he?

“Ah yes, terribly sorry about that,” Elliot tells you, not sounding particularly sorry at all, “But I saw something in the evening paper that reminded me of you. Some unsavoury business going on at the moment.”

Now does he mean the whole “demons invading this world” thing, or a different piece of unsavoury business?

“Take a look for yourself,” Elliot hand a neatly folded newspaper over, one of the articles clearly circled with red ink, “Read carefully, now, and ask yourself if anything sounds familiar.”

Hmm. You scan the article first, before your eyes grow wide and you reread it in greater detail. According to the article, there have been a number of disappearances at a certain club. In each case, the victim complained of a headache or sudden nausea before either going to the bathroom or heading outside. After that, they were never seen again. The police currently suspect kidnapping, possibly with the aid of some drug, but there are no leads. Elliot was right – it does sound familiar.

“So what do you think?” he asks coyly, holding his own opinions close to his chest for now.

Unless this is some ridiculously elaborate kidnapping racket you've stumbled upon, you're fairly certain that this is not a problem of human origin. No, what you'd have to guess is that they've been taken to the other world.

“The other world, is it?” Elliot pushes his glasses up his nose and smiles with amusement, “That would be the same place that all those beasties have been coming from, right? The same place that you happened to visit on your little impromptu holiday?”

The exact same. You've seen what it's like over there – it's no place for any human, let alone anyone without any way to defend themselves. If the other residents of that world are as nasty as that hellhound, a little snowball fight would be the least of their worries should anyone slip across to the other side.

“My,” Elliot sighs as he takes a flask out from his suit jacket and takes a swig from it, “The world seems like a much more interesting place lately, doesn't it? Times like these can drive a man to drink...”

Not too much, you hope. You've all got important business later, hopefully involving Amelia giving you some decent answers for once. This new information might be of some use to her – if other people are slipping through the barrier, that must have been what happened to Marco!

“Just a spot of brandy, dear. It's medicinal, I promise,” Elliot drinks again and pulls a face, “The devil's own drink though. With a glass of it in one hand and a deck of cards in the other, I'm set for the evening. I don't suppose you've got some cards handy? No?” Elliot shrugs and tucks his flask away, “Probably for the best.”

Right. Probably for the best.

You make small talk with Elliot for a while until your other guests start filtering through. Cassandra is first, shortly followed by Petra. The two of them bristle a little at the sight of each other, but it's more out of awkwardness than any real animosity. Petra seems sober and she doesn't come in swinging a knife about, so you'll count that as a victory. Still, if those two seemed a little on edge before, it's nothing compared to their reaction when you show Joseph through into the main room.

“You!” Cassandra and Petra both spit in perfect unison, only to glance at each other in surprise. Some trace of the ice between them seems to melt, although you can sense Joseph faltering in confusion.

“Me?” he asks, pointing a confused finger at his chest, “Did I do something wrong? I'm afraid I don't even know your names. Isn't it a little early to start throwing accusations about?”

Before the situation can escalate any further, you step between Joseph and the pair of girls, holding your hands up to call a truce. Maybe everyone should just settle down, you suggest, and take a moment. Then, as an aside, you call for Elliot to bring the snacks you'd prepared. Nobody can argue over a plate of delicious snacks – nobody.

There is a great deal of grumbling, but eventually everyone settles down around the table. A moment later Amelia is there as well, standing with her arms folded and glaring right at Joseph. That's a cold stare, even compared with the lingering hostility Cassandra and Petra had on display. Maybe... maybe there really is bad blood between those two – if so, however, it's fairly one sided. Joseph just seems confused by the whole affair. Confused, and a little hurt.

You can't help but feel a little sorry for him. He's not been anything other than kind to you, and he's not done anything wrong yet – in this lifetime, at least.
>>
>>43500275

“So,” Amelia begins eventually, “Things are progressing faster than I'd expected. That's good, in a way. As some of you might know, Mia here had a little adventure today – she briefly crossed over to the other world. This has given me a few ideas about how to control this ability, but I don't have anything ready yet. We'll call that one a work in progress.”

“Next,” she continues, “I think I should explain a few things. Namely, the reason that all of this is happening in the first place. It might be a long explanation, so if you've got any questions you want to ask...”

“Actually-” Joseph begins, raising his hand.

“Not you,” Amelia snaps, “You can wait until the end!”

“I don't know why everyone is being so hostile,” Joseph pouts, “I just want to know what I'm supposed to have done.”

“Alright, fine!” the deity snarls, appearing behind Joseph and sticking two of her fingers into his forehead. The digits sink into his flesh without leaving behind a single mark, but Joseph shudders regardless “Sit down, shut up and think about what you've done!”

As the young doctor slumps back in his chair, trembling and groaning softly, Amelia reappears at the head of the table. “Now,” she says calmly, “Any issues to deal with before we begin?”

You don't... She just... But...

What did she just DO to him?

“He wanted to know, didn't he?” Amelia shrugs, with a cold smile, “I just reminded him of every little thing he did. He'll be fine – eventually. He just needs some time to think things over.”

You stare at her in genuine horror before looking away, some detached part of your mind noting that even Cassandra and Petra seem to be shifting awkwardly, uncomfortable in the suddenly tense atmosphere. Elliot is perhaps the only one who doesn't look frozen with fear, and that's just because of the confusion that is painted across his face. Clearing your throat softly, you get up and hurry through to the kitchen. As you make a pot of very strong tea, you lean on the counter and try to control your breathing. Sure, Amelia suggested that Joseph had done some bad things, but this? What she just did couldn't exactly be called right or good, even is she IS God.

When you've calmed yourself, you return to the main room and start to hand out cups, filling them with the fragrant tea. At least now Joseph is capable of murmuring a vague thanks as you pour him a cup, although his eyes are still fixed on the middle distance. As you return to your seat, you clear your throat again and mention the recent disappearances. It's something, you suggest, that might be important. Linked, perhaps, to your father's disappearance.

“Yes, that makes sense,” Amelia agrees, “So we'll add that to the discussion. It's a lead, certainly. Anything else? Yes, Petra,” she adds when the redhead raises a tightly clenched fist, “In private, okay? Then we'll continue...”

There comes a murmured agreement from around the table, all of the assembled people looking down at their cups or at each other. Anywhere, in fact, but directly at Amelia.
>>
>>43500304
>>43500638
I was going to joke about Amelia casually mentioning how Joseph murdered 95% of humanity, admittedly there weren't very many at the time, but the point stands.

But uh, Amelia you have problems.
>>
>>43500665
Some things stick with you. Joseph and Mastema were on the top of our shitlist in the last cycle and for good reason. Even as a deity, she is still pretty human.
>>
>>43500638

“Okay,” Amelia takes a breath – although you imagine that, as God, it's more for show than anything else – and presses on, “The reason why the world is in such a poor shape. You've all been wanting to know, and I think I have an answer.”

“Shouldn't this wait?” Cassandra asks suddenly, “Um, I mean, we're not all here yet, are we?”

“Frankly, I doubt our absent friend will care very much either way,” Amelia shrugs, “I'll fill him in when we find him. He's not that important right now anyway. Right, okay, a quick refresher. The old world, the world I've left behind, was bound by a cycle of death and rebirth. When I claimed the True Divinity, I decided to create a new world that existed outside this cycle – a world that would not crumble and die. With me so far?”

There is another murmur of agreements from around the table. Still uneasy, but the atmosphere is beginning to relax – probably because Joseph hasn't dropped down dead yet.

“The thing is... I made a mistake,” Amelia scowls, “I committed a sin. Sure, it was an innocent one, done with the best of intentions, but it was a mortal sin nonetheless.”

A sin? But she's God, isn't she? You frown a little yourself. Something doesn't quite add up here...

“To create an entirely new world, I needed to remove all traces of the old one,” the deity before you continues, “Everything. Everyone that I knew, everything that I had done... I couldn't do it. It just wasn't fair – what's the point in winning, if you have to do something like that? So, I kept traces of you all alive in my heart, traces that found their way back to you in this new world. It was, based on human morality, the right thing to do.”

“But,” she adds gravely, “I wasn't human.”
>>
>>43500755

“I built this world on an uneven foundation,” Amelia's voice, here, is tense. Not quite guilty, but... there is something there. Not extreme enough to be self-loathing, but there is a shadow of it lurking there, behind her attempts at staying solemn. “That's why, I believe, the barrier cannot remain intact. The world I created was flawed from the very first moment it was created, purely because I couldn't bring myself to do what God should be able to do.”

Can you really blame her, though? You ask yourself this as you look around the silent table. If these people were all your friends – and some of them are quickly growing into just that – could you discard them so easily? No, you don't think you could. It's like she said – you're just too human for that.

The silence around the table draws out longer still, Amelia apparently finished with her explanation. Really, what can someone say to something like that?

Also ask how bad is it, during one of the tears, Petra's eye turned green. That's not normal is it?

Let's try to be solution-oriented here.
>>
>>43500802
>>43500810

You're the first person to speak up, perhaps the first person who dares to speak up. You don't think, you say carefully, that anyone here blames her for what she did. If anything, it goes to show that she's still pretty human – even as a deity. That can't be a bad thing, right? You're fairly sure that even a perfect world wouldn't be worth it if it meant giving up her reason for fighting. She'd just be another demon that way, fighting for the sake of fighting.

If the look of surprise on Amelia's face is anything to go by, that wasn't the answer she was expecting – but then, what was? Spiteful rage, or some kind of outraged tantrum? No, you're not that kind of person. You try, when possible, to focus on the goal. In this case that means one thing – how do we fix this?

“Gathering everyone together is the first step,” Amelia says, her voice confident, “Once that's done, I think I'll be ready to move onto the next stage of the plan. Things are looking good, though, don't worry about that.”

Good, huh? Does that mean she has a lead on keeping things under control?

“You mean the demons invading?” at least here, Amelia has the grace to look a little sheepish, “That might be an ongoing issue. I can minimise the danger, but I can't stop everything from slipping through. You might still have some work to do yourselves, on that count.”

That's... more or less what you were expecting, to be honest. She might be God, but it seems that Amelia isn't quite as omnipotent as she might think she is. One other thing, you say quickly, the last time there was a tear, Petra's eye turned green – just for a moment. That shouldn't be able to happen, should it?
>>
>>43501105

“My eye?” Petra asks, her brow creased with a deep frown, “It was green, yes?”

“That's not normal at all,” Amelia sounds troubled – genuinely disturbed – by this, “I'll... need to think on that. It shouldn't be possible, you see. Yes, there is mental contamination – these past memories and such – but physical? That shouldn't happen. I wonder if...”

“It wasn't my eye,” Petra mutters, although she doesn't seem to be consciously aware of saying anything at all.

A new, but typically heavy and awkward, silence descends upon the group. You eventually break it by asking the table in general what the next move should be.

“Well,” Cassandra says slowly, “We should focus on gathering everyone else here. That means finding Leon and your father. But your father...”

“Might be linked with the club disappearances,” Amelia finishes, “And I don't have a guaranteed way of pulling you back to this world yet. Going over there is risky right now.”

“Ah, excuse me,” Elliot says, “Can we... NOT bring that Leon chap here? If there's a way to possibly avoid it, I mean?”

“We can divide the tasks up later,” Amelia sighs, pressing a hand to her face as though suffering from a headache, “It's best that we split up into pairs. Groups, maybe. Mia, what do you want to focus on?”

You look at Joseph, slumped in his chair and staring off into space. Is he... going to be okay? You're a little worried about him, and it looked like Amelia dropped a pretty big bombshell on him.

“He'll be fine,” Amelia tells you, although her voice is filled with such a casual indifference that you can't quite bring yourself to believe her, “He might be having a few flashbacks, maybe talking to an imaginary friend or two, but it'll wear off eventually. Ah, but I wonder what he'll have to say when he gets his senses back. Say Cassandra, do you think he'll say sorry?”

“Um...” Cassandra looks down, “I... suppose so?” She can't bring herself to say any more, however, and a painful silence descends. It's a long time before you can force yourself to say something – anything – to break the troubled pause. You decide to ask about their missing friend, if “friend” is really the right word to use.

This Leon guy, the one that Amelia needs, who is he exactly? And, perhaps more importantly, where would you be able to find him?

“Leon MacGregor,” Cassandra explains carefully, “As I recall, he was a member of our group for a short time before we parted ways. As I understand it, he died not long afterwards. For a time, I mean, but uh... that's not important right now. Please understand, we did all we could to save him and keep him with us.” She stops talking here, a faint look of confusion passing across her face. “We... did everything we could, didn't we?”

“That's right,” Amelia nods quickly, “It's unfortunate, but he chose his own fate. It just so happened that he chose poorly. It always sat poorly with me though,” she sighs softly, “I think I saw it as a failure. It bothered me. But, well, that's all in the past now, isn't it? As for finding him, I believe your new friend might be able to help us with that...”
>>
>>43501488

“Oh right,” Elliot makes a valiant attempt at sounding casual here, but his voice has a shrill edge to it, “I see where this little train of thought is going. It's pulling right into a station called “BAIT”, isn't it?”

“Well that's certainly a possibility, isn't it?” a slow smile spreads across Amelia's face as she studies Elliot, “You want to do your part in saving the world, don't you?”

“What about my kneecaps?” he asks in reply, “Will you be doing your part in saving those? I don't know if you're aware, but your old friend has quite the taste for violence. Look love, I'm not saying that I WON'T be a part of this wonky little scheme you're putting together, but I want some assurance that I'll be kept safe, that's all.”

>>43501567

Okay, here's the thing. You're willing to help keep Elliot safe from whatever this Leon guy throws at him. You'll do your part, but there is one little tiny problem. You're only fourteen years old, and you're a pretty scrawny example of a fourteen year old. Sure, you have a demon you could summon – albeit a demon who also looks to be about fourteen bloody years old – but you're not convinced that setting your attack dog on the guy you want to recruit is a good idea.

In short, just what is Amelia expecting you to do here? Wrestle some violent young man to the ground and give him a good talking to?

“Is that a problem?” Amelia asks with a negligent shrug, “Really though. If you can bring him here, I should be able to do the rest. Hell, if you can just find him, get him to show himself, I should be able to handle things. Unless, you know, he's fallen through a hole in the barrier. That would be pretty inconvenient for us all.”

Is that... likely?

“That depends,” Amelia's answer is evasive, “I don't think these tears are actively malicious but... Well, I've not had a chance to properly observe them yet.”

“Look here,” Elliot sighs, “I've got his number. I was supposed to call him when I have their money – which I don't – but it would do the job, wouldn't it? Call the stupid arse, lure him over here and hit him with your spooky magic stuff. No risk, no fuss. But, ah, I'd feel a lot more comfortable if I had a demon of my own to fight with.”

“That's right,” Amelia says, in a note of surprise, “I forgot all about that. Well, I've already tampered with the natural order a little bit. Why not go all the way? That includes you Petra and...” she frowns, “Fine. Joseph too I guess. Petra, grab his phone, won't you? I don't think he's in any position to object.”
>>
>>43501883

You watch, uncomfortable, as Petra rifles through Joseph's pockets until she has his phone. Then, taking Elliot's device as well, she puts them in front of Amelia who, one by one, dips her spectral finger into the screens. With that little task – it had the strange air of a ritual or ceremony – out of the way, Petra returns the devices to their respective owners, holding her own phone close to her breast. For all her earlier anger and bitterness, she seems to look at her phone with something approaching true devotion. Not religious devotion, you don't think, but something else...

“Capital!” Elliot remarks as he takes his phone, “But I suppose you have a point, Mia. No using our otherworldly powers to beat up mob thugs. Terrible shame, but I think I can live with it. Tell you what, I'll give you the number and you can decide what to do with it. Tell him you've got his money, or you know where I'm hiding out or whatever you bloody like. It's just a case of getting him here, isn't it?”

That's what you believe, you tell him with a sideways glance towards Amelia. Just what the hell is she going to do to this guy when he arrives? Flood his mind with old memories, or just make a little private appearance? And if she does start to play around with his mind, can you really just sit back and watch?

You look at the number on Elliot's phone and commit it to memory, preparing to dial it into your own phone. Then you pause, worried about exactly what Amelia will do when the young man arrives. Still holding your phone in your hand, you look over to the goddess. Next time, you tell her slowly, don't just dump everything on him at once. You get the impression that he doesn't have many good memories to relive. What you don't say aloud is that there are other memory related problems that she needs to think about.

What you think next, you think with as much emphasis as possible, pushing the thoughts to the front of your mind. Petra, you say to yourself, isn't doing so good. She has... Your thoughts trail off here, as you struggle to think of how to describe what the redhead has been going through. Eventually, you decide to recall, in as much detail as possible, what she had told you herself. Some shadow of your own memories must reach Amelia, whose eyes grow wide. Now, at last, you see a guilty look flash across her features. She looks down at her hands for a moment, grimacing, before looking up to you.

“I understand,” she says, with the intention very clear, “No memory dump. Shame. It's very convenient you know – it's not my fault that Joseph had so much to feel bad about.”

And with that, the guilt is gone. You're genuinely impressed at how quickly she can flit between regret and spite. Shaking your head softly, you take a deep breath and finish dialling Leon's number, pressing the phone to your ear. It only has time to ring once before a frantic voice meets your ears. A woman's voice.

“I'll pay whatever you want!” the voice pleads, “Just don't hurt him! Just give him back to me!”

What.

This... doesn't seem right. You don't have the time to think your answer through and find yourself blurting out the first thing that crosses your mind. Who, you ask is this?

“Who is THIS?” the voice shoots back now, the fear replaced with something else. Slow confusion maybe.

You're just... a friend of Leon's, that's all. A friend trying to get in contact with him. He's missing?

“A friend,” the voice says softly, and now you definitely recognise the underlying emotion. It's passed right through fear and confusion to settle right on suspicion. “A lady friend?”

Why oh why, you ask yourself despairingly, didn't you just let Elliot handle this? You have little doubt that Elliot would be getting this treatment, as though you were some... criminal! You take a deep breath, cursing your vile luck, before you try to steer the conversation back on track. Leon. Is he missing? Yes or no answer, please.

“Of course he's missing!” your unseen enemy snaps, “He wasn't answering his phone, so I went looking for him. I found his phone and then YOU called – what else was I supposed to think? If he hasn't been kidnapped, what HAS happened to him?”

You can't deal with this now. You just can't. Sighing again, you take the phone away from your ear and ask for a rough description of Leon. As you suspected, he was that rough looking young man who Elliot had retreated from. He's missing? But you only saw him this morning!

“Exactly!” the voice shouts, “It's been six hours since he last answered his phone or did any kind of social media stuff. He's missing. Gone!”

So... you're going to make a guess. Is this Leon's girlfriend?

“His fiancé,” is the strangely smug reply, “My name is Anna, and, say... I don't think I know you. I know ALL of Leon's friends!”

Uh. You'll call her right back.
>>
>>43502859

“A fiancé?” Amelia asks, grimacing, “He never mentioned anything about a fiancé last time we met. I suppose some things are different this time around, but I've never seen a divergence like this before. And, being honest, she sounds pretty suspicious to me. This could be a trap.”

“He never mentioned a fiancé to me either,” Elliot adds, “And, well, we were all drinking pretty hard. That's when guys let stuff like that slip. You know, bragging about the girls they've...” he stops abruptly here, looking at you and clearing his throat awkwardly. “Fine respectable ladies that they've taken out on dates.”

Uh huh. And did Leon talk about these “fine respectable ladies” when they were having their little “guy” moment?

“Several!” Elliot remarks, “In fact, there was one time when he...” again, the young man stops, “He, ah, was supposed to go on a double date, but the other chap didn't show, so he entertained both ladies at once. We were all impressed at that – the perfect gentleman!”

This is... not getting you anywhere. In fact, you really don't want to talk about this.

“I'm curious, yes?” Petra says, leaning forwards with a lascivious grin, “Tell me more...”

“Later,” Elliot promises, returning her smile. Did... did they just have a moment? “But anyway,” Elliot says, “This rather puts a spanner in the works, doesn't it? If our rugged Scottish friend really IS missing...”

Then that suggests something is going after the “important people” that Amelia is trying to gather, you finish for him. But where does that leave the plan?

“We need to find him,” Cassandra reminds you softly, “This IS important.”

You look around the table, pursing your lips as you think. This is just a theory, you say carefully, stressing the uncertainty you feel. When nobody raises their voices to stop you, or – as your father might – urge you to be more confident about your thoughts, you continue. If Leon really is missing, there could be a connection between him and the club disappearances. People seem to be vanishing all over, and you think that demon might be the culprit.

“A demon, reaching through holes in the barrier to take people,” Amelia muses on the idea, “Yes, it's possible, I think. It shouldn't be, but with the barrier in the state it's currently in...”

To continue with your theory, is it not the case that every time a tear has happened, a demon has also been present? That would mean that if there really was a tear at the club, the demon might still be there. Although, and this is where your theory falters, you've not heard reports of any violence that might suggest an active demon.

“But if they're not all violent...” Cassandra adds delicately, “If they're working towards some other plan, they'd have a reason to stay quiet.”

“A demon entering the world would certainly cause a tear,” Amelia confirms, “And yes, Cassandra is right here. There might be a demon working incognito. Hmm... things just got very interesting. It's looking like someone might need to cross over a little earlier than I had hoped.”

Well, you might be able to help with that. When you were over there, you met a demon who was capable of sending you back. Apparently, it's a pretty simple trick. When you see the confused eyes turned your way, you hastily recount your adventures through the looking glass, culminating in your encounter with Alice and her guardian.

“Oh, I know him!” Cassandra announces, “Uh... knew him? You know what I mean.”
>>
>>43503608

“So, let me get this straight,” Amelia asks, “You want to have a poke around this club to search for a demon, as well as possibly entering the tear – if there is one – to search around the demon world?”

That's... a little more bluntly than you would have put it, but yes, that just about sums it up. Is that a problem?

“Other than crossing the boundary between worlds into a realm filled with bloodthirsty monsters with no certain way of getting out again?” Amelia smirks, “Nope, I can't think of any problems. Don't forget, I might not be able to offer much aid when you're over there – even less than I can do in this world. Still, you might be able to rely on Neb... on Mister Black to send you back home again. I won't say he's a good guy, but he respects a deal and won't screw you over without a damn good reason.” She winces here, as though summoning some dark moment from her memory, “Just be polite and don't miss an appointment. It's for your own good.”

Uh, right. You'll keep that in mind.

“Of course, getting into the club might not be so easy, yes?” Petra adds, looking down on you, “You don't look old enough to drink coffee, much less alcohol.”

You'll think of something.

“If you want to go, I can't stop you,” Amelia warns, “But I don't want all of you going. Too much risk here to send every one of you running off. So, Mia, if you want to do this, you'll need to choose a partner.”

It's probably best if Cassandra escorts you. You get the impression that Petra and Amelia were pretty eager to get on with that talk of theirs, while Joseph isn't really in any fit state to take you anywhere. Elliot would be a choice, but with his recent money troubles, it might not be such a good idea to parade him in front of what could very well be a mob hangout. So, that leaves Cassandra.

“Oh, I'm glad to hear that,” Cassandra offers you a brittle smile, “You've ruled everyone else out, so...”

That's really not what you meant, you tell her hastily, only for her smile to melt into something warmer, something more genuine. Covering her sudden giggles with the back of her hand, Cassandra waves away your concern.

“I'm kidding, Mia,” she tells you, when she can keep a straight face, “Really. I'd be happy to escort you – clubs can be dangerous places, you know, even without demons around to mess things up. Why, I remember the first time I went clubbing with a couple of friends...”

Oh, what happened?

“Cassandra,” Amelia interrupts, a warning in her voice, “I really don't think Mia needs to hear this particular story.”

Now you're really curious. Any attempts at prying further information from Cassandra's sealed lips are crushed, however, as the blond haired girl stands up and begins to prepare for leaving. She just hums a jaunty tune whenever you ask, a mischievous smile on her face. That's fine – they can keep their secrets. You'll probably find out eventually.

Considering you've never been to a club before, you consider it an impressive feat that you still manage to find yourself disappointed. It's not what you'd call a classy establishment, although it certainly tries very hard. Unfortunately, gaudiness is never going to replace true artistic merit, and there's really no way to make a gold painted door look good. Even the sign – ECSTASY – looks somehow depressing. Shrugging, you follow Cassandra in.
>>

>Why, I remember the first time I went clubbing with a couple of friends...”
Smartass.
>>
>>43504106

Getting into the club turns out to be far easier than you expect. There is a single bouncer staring off into the night – yet still wearing sunglasses – but he does little other than watch Cassandra's backside as she enters. He doesn't even blink as you follow her inside, let alone asking for any proof of age. Already, you can tell that this is a safe and security conscious environment.

“These guys,” Cassandra tells you, leaning down so she can speak right into your ear and make herself heard, “Minimum wage. It's just not worth the trouble of actually doing anything. If anyone asks, he'll claim that you just crept in while he wasn't looking.”

Huh. That's pretty shameful actually. Marco always had such a good work ethic – whatever his job actually WAS – and he'd never think to do such a lacklustre job. These people really shouldn't be any different, even if they ARE on a much lower wage.

“That's life,” Cassandra shrugs, “Now, we're looking for a demon or anything suspicious. Visual distortion, or anything that seems out of the ordinary. You'll, uh, probably know it when you see it.”

You're about to tell her that you've done this before, felt one of those awful unearthly shudders, when – as if reacting to your agitated state of mind – you feel your stomach lurch. It's not quite what you were looking for, but it's a warning sign. It looks like your hunch was right – there is something significant here. As you're straightening up, you see something... a flash of colour amidst the churning bodies. Someone smeared with fluorescent paint perhaps, but...

As another song starts – this one a thumping mess of synthetic bass sounds and unearthly screeching – you lose any hope of being able to speak with Cassandra. Instead, you take her by the arm and pull on her sleeve as you follow that flash of colour. The older girl lets herself be dragged along, her eyes flickering back and forth as she scans the club. Did she not see it? How could she have missed it?

Pushing through the crowds – your slender frame allows you to slip easily between the swaying bodies – you become aware of some other sound beneath the thunderous music. A thin sound, somehow sinuous, that seems to sneak deep into your thoughts. If you hadn't already been set on following that flash of luminous colour, you have little doubt that that mysterious piping would have ensnared you.

You follow your instincts until you come to a dead end, a little alcove that blocks the line of sight from most of the other dancers. Why, you wonder to yourself, would there be an alcove like this in a club? For what purpose does it exist? As you're studying it, you look up at the wall and see a riot of familiar colours. That was the flashing you saw – but that had been moving, like a person. This is just... a crude painting, daubed on the wall in glowing paint. Is this really it?

Well, your instincts took you this far, why not follow them a little further? Making sure that your grip on Cassandra's sleeve is sound, you reach out and touch the painting. That's when the real shudder comes, and you feel your mind splitting in two. This really is it – not just a tear in some metaphorical barrier, but an actual portal. Who could have put it there?

A question that will have to wait, you realise, as you feel your senses elude you.

When rationality reasserts itself, you're... not in a club any more. The place looks more like a prison, with rows of iron doors covering the wall before you. At least Cassandra is still by your side, shaking her head in a vain attempt to clear away the lingering confusion your transition left you both with. It feels like you've travelled a great distance, not just in mystical terms, but in the physical as well.

“Hey!” a weak voice calls out to you from behind one of the doors, “Hey, is there someone there? You smell like humans!”

Well, that might be because you are human. You reply almost immediately, just as Cassandra is raising a finger to her lips. Oops.

“Huh, never seen a human that wasn't in a cell like me,” the voice adds, “Seen lots of those though. They come in here, the jailer grabs them and just tosses them in a cell. Then they get shipped out somewhere else. Say, why not come over here to we can talk face to face? I'm no danger, with this door between us.”

Shrugging, you approach the door and, standing on tiptoes, look through the slit. Inside is a little demon girl, with a pair of leathery wings spreading out from her back. She's... pretty cute. Not exactly dressed for winter weather though.

She said more humans had been through here lately. You immediately think of the recent disappearances, as well as your own missing father. Leon as well, if he really is a part of this. Could it be that they've all come through this place? You ask the trapped demon for anything else she might be able to tell you about humans she's seen.

“Yeesh, that's a lot to ask,” she pouts, “They come stumbling in here, like they have no idea what just happened to them – kinda like you guys actually – and then sooner or later someone comes by to slap irons on them. Then, it kinda varies, they get taken elsewhere. Those two you mentioned, I recognise one of them. He was yelling a lot, all “Aye, fuck, cunt!” and stuff. Sound like your man? As for where he was taken, I couldn't say where – I'm stuck in here, after all!”

Yes, she certainly is. Perhaps she'd like to tell you why she's locked up?

“Hehehe...” the demon laughs nervously, “I was caught, uh, gathering information for some friends of mine. They don't take too kindly to spies around here! I think they're deciding what to do with me, arguing over who gets to, well, you know...”

You don't, actually, but quite frankly, you'd rather not know. She does seem to be in quite a bind though. If you were to free her, would she be willing to join your service?

“Oh hell yes!” the demon sits up a little straighter, eagerness burning in her eyes, “You'll need to get the keys though, and the jailer is the only one with a set...”

“The jailer, huh?” Cassandra slips her phone out of her pocket, with the air of a duellist drawing their pistol, “And where can we find him?”

“Right here!” a snarling voice roars, and you both turn with a gasp to face the hideous demon that was sneaking up on you. “Fresh meat for the auction block!” it sneers.

You're not going to back down from a brute like him – you'll show him that you're not afraid to fight! Following Cassandra's lead, you pull your own phone out and brandish it like a sword, finger poised above the icon to summon your faithful demon. Wasting no time, you press the icon and, with a flash of beautiful light, Nadja appears before you.

Cassandra summons her demon a moment later, the strangely dressed female form appearing with a heavenly chorus at her back. You've never seen something quite like it – a blindfolded girl with long, slender limbs and a sheathed sword at her hip. There's something angelic about her, but not in any kind of traditional way.

“Hahahah...” the jailer grunts out a crude laugh, “two skinny girls against me? Oh, maybe when I have you beaten and shackled, I'll keep you for myself... I can hardly wait!”

“This guy,” Cassandra tells you with a grimace, “Is disgusting.”

You couldn't agree more.

“Go on!” the prisoner yells from behind the safety of her iron cell door, “Kick him in the bulge!”

And with that, the jailer snorts with rage, raising his curiously shaped weapon to launch an attack. Both Nadja and Cassandra's strange angel respond, leaping into action.

“Try some of this!” Nadja cries, her bone necklace rattling as she conjures a bolt of lightning and hurls it at the attacking jailer. It hits home, true, but it seems to little overt damage. What it does do, however, is stun the snarling brute, ruining his attempt at a charge. He is reduced to stumbling forwards, blindly swinging his crescent shaped blade in a vain attempt at causing damage. In this helpless state his attacks are futile at best, pathetic at worst. He's easy prey.

“Wingless, go!” Cassandra shouts, “But don't kill him!”

Nodding, without needing to speak, the angel draws her sword with a flash of light and lashes out, ducking in and out of the jailer's pathetic swings. Wingless, if that is her name, strikes three times before retreating back, flicking her blade out in a single, final stroke to shake off the dark drops of blood that had bloomed across it. A moment later, when the jailer swings his absurd weapon, both of his hands come free from their wrists, soon followed by spurts of that same tar-like blood. Howling in shock and pain, the jailer drops to his knees.

Both you and Cassandra take careful steps backwards, avoiding the worst of the spurting blood.

“Now,” Cassandra asks calmly, a slight paleness to her face the only indication that she is anything less than ice cold, “Perhaps you can drop the bravado and tell us what we want to know?”

The jailer growls for a moment, the sound tapering off to a pathetic whine as the blood leaks from his body. Wingless, you notice, has the slightest hint of a smile on her porcelain face. A few moments later, and the jailer nods heavily.

You step a little closer, your boots splashing in the slowly spreading pool of the jailer's blood as you ask the first question. Who's his boss, who does he work for? It's pretty obvious, from that little skirmish alone, that he's not very high up the ladder. There has to be someone above him giving the orders – who?

“My master... The intoxicating one. You are all fools, if you think you can battle him. He could swallow the gods in a single mouthful and still have room for all of the heavens,” a rattling, gurgling laugh escapes the jailer, “Please. Fight him. I'll laugh as he destroys you in a heartbeat.”

And this intoxicating one, was he the one who put that painting on the wall outside? The one luring people to this dismal prison?

“Outside?” the jailer says this word like it has no meaning to him, “Not I. That was the liberator's doing. He is not bound to this world, as I am. He comes and he goes, and none of your pathetic barriers can do anything to stop him!”

That... he knows about Amelia's barrier?

“Who doesn't?” the jailer snorts with contempt, “We all know about it, and we all wait for the day that it crumbles. Humans – bah! You lot are doomed!”

“The auction block,” Cassandra says, her voice as hard as steel, “What is it?”

Right, you nod to her, and where is it?

“We take the prisoners there,” he growls, “To sell them to the highest bidder. You know what an auction is, don't you? We sell them as food, as slaves, as worse things aside. Were your friends taken here? Ah... I hope they've been given to the most vile master possible!”

You and Cassandra share a grimace at that. Leon came through here, the prisoner's testimony was proof of that, and now he might be in the hands of something far stronger than this brute. Getting him back won't be as easy as you suspect.
>>
>>43506297

Now, you tell him when you return your gaze to him, he should just hand over the keys. Except... he can't, can he? Terribly sorry about that, or so Elliot might say. The jailer growls softly, furious at your mocking but unable to do anything in return. You circle him slowly, before spotting a heavy ring of keys on his belt. Those, you take for yourself, before taking a careful step backwards. At Cassandra's nod, Wingless readies her sword.

The blade flashes out once, but that single stroke is all it takes to remove the jailer's head from his body. A weak spurt of blood gushes from the neck – perhaps all the blood he had left in his body – and then he falls, totally still, sideways to the ground.

Nice moves, you tell Cassandra, who nods graciously. She still, however, looks a little pale. A little uneasy at the sight of so much blood. Keys in hand, you step past the taller girl and unlock the prisoner's cell. Grinning like a mad thing, the little demon emerges and offers you her hand to shake.

“My name's Lilim,” she tells you brightly, “And I'll be happy to join your service. Now... what's your plan to get out of here?”

That's a very good question actually. A very good question indeed.

Gurr, Hrej, Pixie, Heidi, Unicorn, Valk?

Eligor have a band of men who are loyal unto death?
>>
>>43506869
>Ose will show up
Sick. Seriously whenever I think of Cass's 'main' demon its him, not CuCu. He did a lot of work comparatively.

So how is Joseph doing with the memory flood?

Does Elliot really just not give a fuck about all of this and is just going with the flow?
>>
>>43506869
What demons did Amelia grant the others?
>>
>>43506918
>Gurr, Hrej, Pixie, Heidi, Unicorn, Valk?

They're mostly just keeping on going. Valkyrie runs with a gang of like minded ruffians, Pixie talks big about how she was totally God's closest ally, while Heidi watches disapprovingly. Gurr, Unicorn and Hres are all too feral to really do much with their lives, but they're still out and about - causing trouble.

>>43506922

Joseph is coming around, slowly. The worst thing that Amelia did to him was blur the lines. So, in other words, it's difficult for him to say "No, I didn't kill those people". She's got a mean streak!
Elliot, on the other hand, is keeping a stiff upper lip. He's got his money troubles to focus on. Without those, I think he'd be a lot more freaked out.

>>43506948

Petra has a Dullahan, Elliot has Fortuna. Joseph, meanwhile, has an Archangel.
>>
>>43503086
>“Later,” Elliot promises, returning her smile. Did... did they just have a moment?
what

>>43506349
Mia is.....perfectly find with violence. I'm not sure what that implies.
>>
>>43507059

Kids are cruel!

And maybe Petra and Elliot have more in common than they thought! A shared interest in lewd gossip
>>
>>43507059
>>43507096

Doesn't matter who you are, gotta enjoy threesome stories.
>>
>>43507023
>Petra has a Dullahan
Neat. Any chance of her getting a Deathstone again?

>Elliot has Fortuna
Irrrroooonnnnnyy

>Joseph, meanwhile, has an Archangel.
I almost expected her to give him a devil.
>>
Goddammit Amelia.

Hmmmmm, Joseph with an angel whispering in his ear poisoned, shot and transformed people in disturbing ways all for that angel's goals. I know, let's give him in this new timeline . . . an angel! WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG!
>>
>>43507111
>Any chance of her getting a Deathstone again?

The Deathstone is out there somewhere. Attracting all the wrong kinds of people no doubt!

>I almost expected her to give him a devil.

That would be pretty funny actually!
>>
>>43507165
>>43507156
That is a good point. Is that Archangel allied with YHVH? Not the best call if so.
>>
>>43507023
>Archangel
aww, not a certain extremely unlucky angel with sight issues?
>>
>>43507190

This raises an interesting issue actually. The old Law and Chaos forces still exist, but they're a lot less dominant than they used to be. The current demon world is far more open to new factions. However, the Archangel provided is still loyal to YHVH/the Great Will.

I like to imagine that Amelia gave him an angel to remind him of what he did. At least she gave him an angel of stabbing stuff. Not much subtlety there!

>>43507192

He's still in angel hospital!
Because every time he heals, Heartless comes down and breaks his legs again. And again, and again...
>>
>>43507252
Heartless needs to be entertained some way.

How is Nyarly doing anyways?
>>
>>43507286
>How is Nyarly doing anyways?

I think this might best be answered with a slightly altered quote:

Slowly and surely, he drew his plans against us...
>>
>>43507252
Nyarly still finds that funny? How many times did he break in before the guards just gave up on stopping him? How many aspiring Champions of Order got their shit kicked in by him on his way to do break the legs again?

>>43507371
dammit
>>
>>43507371
Huh. He is totally going to be a final boss isn't he?
>>
>>43507410
>>43507371
On the one hand, killing him back then would solve a lot of problems.

On the other hand, it would really run counter to Amelia's principles and the debt we've racked up with ol' Jack
>>
The jailer mentioned an auction house. What do demons use to bid on slaves? I can't imagine they have a single currency in the demon world

Also why did you choose to use the Nier character design for Wingless? It came pretty out of nowhere
>>
>>43507445
Totally. I don't regret our decision at all back then. It was IC and pretty hype.

Sure we'll have some trouble down the line but Nyarly/Heartless would be a good antagonist.
>>
>>43507389
>Nyarly still finds that funny?

It's all in how you tell the joke. Sometimes he'll show up and say "Haha, just spooked you, I'm not here to hurt you!" and then he'll break his legs anyway. You know, variation.

>>43507410

Oh, I can't imagine he'll be causing many problems. At least not yet

>>43507464

Demons trade in all manner of things. Favours, weapons, items, gemstones, the service of lesser demons. Basically, anything that can be bartered is used.

And for Wingless, well, I just love the design. The blindfold reminded me of the SMT angels from the moment I saw it, while the short hair made me think of Cass. I try to stick to using SMT art, but I made an exception this time
>>
>>43507530
So when Cass was making a smartass remark about the first time she went clubbing she was talking about the time Amelia, Leon, and her went after Harry right?

I'm surprised she was so...chipper I guess, remembering that. Enough to poke fun at it anyway.
>>
>>43507687

That's right. Cass, in this cycle, is a little bit more easy going, so putting a bright spin on things is more natural to her. Also, she mainly puts on a cheerful act around Mia, as a kind of "big sister" thing

On her own, she'd probably be a lot less perky
>>
>>43507740
Thats cool, just surprised me.

Mia's demons now consist of two little girl demons and is 'friends' with Alice. I wonder if this will be a trend?
>>
>>43507787
>I wonder if this will be a trend?
Not gonna lie, I think it'd be pretty cool. Though I reckon she'll get Minotaur eventually - the previous cycle's version of Marco maybe?
>>
>>43507740
>Lilim
+Capable of decreasing enemy power

Hmm is that a full on Debilitate or Tarunda for this quest Moloch?

Also just Mudo? No elemental magic?
>>
>>43508018

She has Tarunda and Rakunda.
And now you mentioned it, I realise that I got her abilities wrong. I assumed she had mudo but, going off Nocturne - which I usually do - she doesn't actually have any Dark skills. She does have Zio though. I'll make the corrections immediately
>>
>>43508084
Difference between potent and powerful?
>>
>>43508084
Hope we don't run into anything resistant to Lightning for a little bit. Well as long as we have another Human partner with us we can play debuffer if thats the case.

Still need to get an elemental spread going.

Man Jack was versatile back in the day.
>>
>>43508204

Nadja is more powerful, but there isn't much difference. I just dislike using the same word too much!

>>43508223

Well, it's early days yet. And, really, you can't get much more versatile than stabbing stuff until it stops moving!
>>
>>43508262
yeah hitting things until they die horribly was Amelia's MO. Petra's too, Amelia just had a much better roster.
>>
Note: I now have an Ask.fm thing. I'll be at /MolochQM

>>43508335

I like to think that if we'd been playing as Petra from the start, she would have turned out just as well as Amelia did. As it stands, most of the demons she recruited got turned into weapons or armour
>>
>>43508444
Oh yeah what happened to make her lose her first eye? Seemed like she just lost it when she held us at gunpoint when we first met.
>>
>>43508493

Nothing particularly glamorous. It got gouged out when she was fighting a Naga, one of the stragglers from the Hellfire Club forces that she ran into.
>>
>>43508554
would heal magic on her normal but not working eye fix it if she ahs another moment? I mean since there's nothing wrong it should be easy to fix.
>>
>>43508585
Her eyes are working fine in the current cycle other than when the physical changes of the old cycle come into effect.
>>
>>43508585

When her eye goes blind during a memory glitch, there isn't anything wrong with it - nothing for the magic to heal, in other words. At least her other eye works!
>>
>>43508625
>At least her other eye works!
For a millisecond did she see everyone's sins? Man I wonder how long Amelia's is NOW.
>>
>>43508658

She would have done so, yes. However, in such a short space of time, she wouldn't really have a chance to understand much. She would, at most, get a bad feeling from a particularly unsavoury character.

Amelia's list would be getting pretty long by now, I imagine. The eye still goes off YHVH's definition of sin, so basically every day that Amelia exists counts!
>>
>>43508714
If the angel the eye was formerly attached too fell(likely do to one fighting off Heartless for the CENTURIES this has been going on) Would that make the eye's parameters change?
>>
>>43508752

I don't think it would change immediately, but that's because a fallen angel wouldn't immediately become, say, a devil. It would take a fairly long time, but it would eventually become a devil eye.

Devil eyes cannot see sins, but they can pick up on a person's innermost desires
>>
>>43508808
If the fallen just stays fallen would it be a normal eye then?
>>
>>43508808
Wow. So what sort of stuff would she see when she looks at the other characters?
>>
>>43508808
>Devil eyes cannot see sins, but they can pick up on a person's innermost desires

>Petra
'I really wanted to get laid by God.'

>>43508838

Do you mean if the angel falls from YHVH's graces without outright becoming a devil? Because, in that case, the eye would remain unchanged. It would still pick up on sins.

>>43508906

Elliot would be pic related

>>43508909

Let the Holy Spirit enter you!
>>
>>43508949
Wouldn't the eye being in Petra for a length of time corrupt it, or corrode its abilities?
>>
>>43508949
>Let the Holy Spirit enter you!

I wouldn't be surprised if Petra is doing her own little thing on the side, trying to find a way to make Amelia corporeal for an amount of time or making herself incorporeal/on the same plane as Amelia.

'Come on Daisoujou! Lets figure this out!'
>>
>>43509007

Actually, it seems like the opposite might apply. Humans are weak compared with immortal angels

>>43509025

>Petra bends heaven and earth to bring Amelia down into a physical form for a few short moments
>Just so they can bang
>Amelia just isn't in the mood
>>
>>43509078
Actually, it seems like the opposite might apply. Humans are weak compared with immortal angels

I'd imagine it'd all come down to WILLPOWER, and I think Petra's is greater than Mr.1 luck beat the fuck up Angel's.
>>
>>43509078
>>Amelia just isn't in the mood

If killing God is the greatest sin . . . what about raping God?
>>
>>43509078
>Humans are weak compared with immortal angels
Well its a good thing she doesn't permanently have it in this cycle right? Hahaha...haaa....

>Amelia just isn't in the mood
You know after all that effort Amelia would probably be cool with it. Hell its the only action she is going to get in like...ever.

And I don't think Petra would take no for an answer at that point.
>>
>>43509105

Well that's certainly not something I can argue with! Either way, her fate has not yet been decided.

>>43509108
>>43509155
>what about raping God?

I can't imagine that's much better. Besides, it's a love that cannot be!
>>
>>43509207
Remember to throw your yuri waifu at us early this time Moloch.

Being Petra will always be suffering. It's her job

In retrospect, I believe I could have handled that better, yes. Live and learn!
>>
>>43509247
>pure

I said yuri.
>>
>>43509290
>>43509234
Sometimes I think about Petra and the fact that Mia is said to look like a younger Amelia. I think about them and I wonder
>>
>>43509330
Short temper like Amelia too, though it manifests in different ways.

And a similar instinct to recruit demons all the time. Like seriously.

>Meet first nonhostile demon
>Get in the damn phone.
>>
>>43509330
>Petra gets a doppelganger
>She makes it assume Amelia's form most of the time
>It begs Petra to just turn it into an item already
>Petra declines

>Petra's storage contains 12 doppelgangers
>She never leaves the Amelia pile
>>
>>43509554
>Sleeping on a pile of Amelias.

I'm pretty sure I'm down for Petra quest now. C'mon Moloch! I wanna I wanna I wanna.

I don't think anything I could come up with would do the idea justice, unfortunately!

See what you're writing is what Elliot would explain to Mia that Petra is doing with that many Amelia's. What I want is what Elliot would tell Leon in a bar what Petra is doing with that many Amelias.
>>
>>43509688

In that case, it would be more like:
>Maid Amelia brings breakfast. Cop a feel
>Secretary Amelia brings a schedule. Cop a feel
>Visit the nurse. Make her cop a feel
And so on and so on!
>>
>>43509768
>Make her cop a feel
Petra, master, I'm not copping a feel. I'm giving you a breast exam. Breast cancer is a serious issue. Please stop moaning.
