You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, a high-ranking shinigami currently posing as a Japanese high-school student. While your classmates are caught up in grades and teenaged drama, you are here to figure out why Karakura town has become such a hotbed of spiritual activity.

One factor is certainly what your zanpakuto's “mother” told you last night when you met, which is that Karakura is currently a Jūreichi, or a region in the living world with an unusually high concentration of spiritual matter and energy. But that cannot explain all of what you've seen here.

“I thought you said you were going to explain what Ichigo and Rukia have been doing?” Tatsuki asks as you approach the abandoned hospital where locals are gathering to watch filming of some stupid TV medium's show.

You take out your phone, checking the coordinates listed by the Research Bureau's coordinators. Yup, this is the place alright. “I never said that. It's easier to show you than to explain. Now hold still.”

“Kyokko,” you whisper, wrapping light around yourself and erasing your spiritual presence. “Tenkotsuki, can you do the same for the girl?”

There's a brief silence.

“Tenkotsuki?”

“I can,” she eventually responds. “But it will take my sole focus.”

“I don't think that's an issue,” you admit silently. “It's just a demi-hollow. Even if it hollowfies I can just punch it to death.”

“Very well,” Tenkotsuki replies as she extends your own kidō just far enough to cover Tatsuki as well.

“Stay close,” you remind Tatsuki. “I'm using a spell to keep us both hidden, but it's not designed to be used like this.”

“A spell?” Tatsuki asks skeptically.

You shrug. “My family runs a shrine, remember?”

“I guess that makes sense,” Tatsuki frowns, struggling briefly with the logic before giving up and accepting your statement at face value.

You walk right past the crowd, which has assembled at the gate to the hospital, completely unseen. Tatsuki glances around, realizing that the two of you are now invisible.

“Amazing,” she comments, waving a hand in front of one of her classmates.

Her classmate looks up in confusion as you clap a hand over Tatsuki's mouth and drag her off.

“They can still hear you,” you hiss. “That's why I told you not to mess around.”

“Sorry,” she mutters.

Now, you need to decide exactly how you're going to do this.

“Follow me,” you insist, tugging Tatsuki along in the direction of Ichigo's reiatsu.

It's not difficult at all to get to him, as he's standing well behind the crowd as they seem to gather around a big, well-lit stage that's been erected out front of the hospital. You watch as a man in a ridiculous costume leaps from an orbiting helicopter and opens a parachute, screaming something about the “spirits always being with you”. The audience eats it up, responding with some sort of laughing gesture you figure must be from the show.

“This is stupid,” Ichigo mutters, mirroring your own sentiment.

After landing the show-runner starts an interview on the stage, talking on and on about how the hospital “smells like bad spirits”, and how he's going to “send them packing to the afterlife”. All pretty generic TV “medium” stuff, albeit with a flashy presentation that's surprisingly earnest. And you have to admit that he has a point: you're certain this location has at least one jibaku bound to it.

But can he really sense it?

After a cut-to-commercial complete with cheesy smoke effects, you see that Rukia has finally met with your nephew, and they've begun making their way towards where the next scene will be filmed.

“Hey, so long as you're here you might as well have fun, right?” Rukia insists as they walk. “Why don't you try enjoying yourself for once?”

“Shut up,” Ichigo replies, clearly exasperated. “And shouldn't we be doing something? I mean, if there's actually a ghost here, shouldn't we be helping it cross over?”

“It can be very hard to pinpoint the location of a spirit that's been bound to the earth,” Rukia explains, and you draw Tatsuki closer to the duo so she can hear your subordinate's ongoing explanation. “That's one of the reasons we shinigami sometimes overlook a particular soul by mistake.”

“I see,” Ichigo nods. “So you guys are only human after all, huh?”
>1/?
>>
>>43520916
“You could say that,” Rukia admits. “But if you met another shinigami, I wouldn't repeat it in front of them. But if we were perfect, then there wouldn't be any hollows, right?”

The night's relative calm is broken by the sound of a spirit howling... although the sound startles Tatsuki, you and Rukia can both clearly tell it's not a hollow.

“Is that...” Ichigo begins.

Rukia shakes her head. “I don't think so, but maybe we should take a look.”

They both head off towards the crowd gathering around the ridiculously-dressed medium.

As you tail Ichigo and Rukia, you mutter instructions to Tatsuki.

“Let's watch this play out for now,” you suggest, “but if things get too ugly I'll step in.”

“Got it,” Tatsuki replies.

You then ask for Tenkotsuki to convert your body back into reishi, so that you can step in without having the crowd notice you if need be. For a few moments Tatsuki is visible again, but thankfully Ichigo doesn't turn around before the spell keeping you hidden is back in place.

When you catch up with Rukia and Ichigo, they're discussing the jibaku.

“I keep telling you,” Rukia insists, “it's nothing to worry about! It can take months for a jibaku to become a hollow, and right before it turns there tends to be a lot of screaming. Does that demi-hollow sound like he's in pain to you?”

Sure enough, even you can hear the ghost shouting at that Kanonji guy about how he should get off of his territory, and how the hospital is his. This jibaku's easily three weeks from hollowfying on his own.

“Yeah, I guess you've got a point,” Ichigo sighs. “Man though, I can't tell which of them is more annoying to listen to.”

“So long as nothing happens to its soul chain,” Rukia continues, “we can just wait until after the show ends to perform the... hey Ichigo, what's that guy doing with that stick?”
>1/2
>>
>>43521333
Before your nephew can even answer, Kanonji shoves what looks like a walking stick into the demi-hollow's chest and starts wiggling it around, provoking frenzied and pained screams from the spirit and cheers from the oblivious crowd.

Rukia slaps her forehead in frustration. “Really?!”

Ichigo on the other hand vaults over the security cordon and takes off towards Kanonji shouting before being dogpiled by security. Rukia tries as well, but gets held off at the cordon before she can pop Ichigo's soul out.

“There we go,” a familiar voice announces as a man in a stupid hat and wooden sandals pokes Ichigo in the back of the head with a walking stick. “Now, don't you have business to be taking care of, Ichigo?”

>You could always cut down that demi-hollow before it transforms.

“Well, I guess hiding myself is pointless now,” you sigh, allowing Tenkotsuki to drop her spell. “Urahara. Tessai. Rukia.”

Urahara opens that silly fan of his to feign surprise. “Oh my, Lady Riku! How surprising to find you here at so late an hour, and with a guest too!”

“So, I see you've taken an interest in Ichigo here,” you observe. “Why am I not surprised?”

Rukia stands up a little stiffer, making a movement to lead Tatsuki off. “Oh, Miss Arisawa! Hi there, how are you enjoying the show so far?”

“Drop the act, shinigami,” you growl at her, trying to drop hints that Tatsuki doesn't know your identity yet. “I intend to explain a few things to Tatsuki here while we watch Ichigo's fight.”

“Do you think that's wise?” Rukia asks you, allowing her projected image of a typical high school girl to drop. “Such knowledge can be dangerous for humans.”

“And it's safer to let her mess around with things she doesn't understand?” you retort. “If someone had explained to Kanonji how things worked, he wouldn't be acting like such a moron.”

“I see your point,” Rukia admits.

You turn to Tatsuki. “Rukia here is a shinigami, and right now Ichigo is probably using powers borrowed from her to fight what we call hollows.”

“Hollows?” Tatsuki asks. “I've heard that word before, but what are they?”

“Souls that have succumb to emptiness,” Rukia explains. “When a spirit loses its heart, it becomes a hungry being driven purely by instinct, losing all sense of self. We call such monsters hollows.”

“They become monsters?” Tatsuki asks, frowning. “But they were human once?”

You shake your head. “While there are stories of hollows gaining back some semblance of humanity, such cases are exceptional. The majority of hollows lack something necessary to do so, and remain monsters until they are purified by a shinigami or eaten by a more powerful hollow.”
>1/2
>>
>>43521703
The hollow formed from the demi-hollow's demise lights off after Ichigo, who has drug Kanonji deeper into the hospital in a shower of broken glass and crumbled concrete. Its reiatsu is barely noticeable, and should be easy enough pickings for Ichigo.

You do wonder how that oversized zanppakuto of his will work in a tight corridor, though.

"Shouldn't we be helping him?" Tatsuki asks. "I mean, why does he have to fight alone?"

"He took my powers," Rukia admits. "I'd be a burden how I am now."

Urahara shrugs dismissively. "I did what I came to do."

"You're too weak as you are to be much help," you tell Tatsuki flatly. "As for me, I just think Ichigo should be able to handle it without too much difficulty."

At that moment the hollow comes crashing through the wall of the hospital dragging Ichigo along with it, with his zanpakuto between its teeth.

You frown. "Though I've been wrong about these things before."

“And how exactly do you know so much about this?” Tatsuki presses. “You can't expect me to believe there are a bunch of magical monster-killing shrine maidens all across Japan.”

You sigh. “Well, there are these humans called Quincy... but I'm not one of them. I'm a shinigami myself.”

Tatsuki stares at you, taking an instinctive half-step backwards. “What do you people want with me and Ichigo?”

“No need to get defensive,” you reassure her. “There's something unusual going on here in Karakura town, and I've been trying to figure it out.”

“Something more unusual than a bunch of death gods running around killing monsters?”

You nod, with a wry grin at her sarcasm. “It's unusual by my standards, so I'd say so. While I'm here, I figured it wouldn't hurt to teach you how to defend yourself.”

“And why would you do that?” Tatsuki demands, crossing her arms. “Don't you have more important things to be doing?”

“Spiritually powerful humans are prime targets for hollows” you explain, “and the reasons we fight hollows are twofold: to regulate the flow of souls between the living world and the afterlife, and to keep humans from being needlessly dragged into spiritual affairs.”

As Ichigo delivers a powerful blow to the hollow, raising a pall of dust from the hospital roof, you look Tatsuki straight in the eyes. Like you thought, he did just fine.

“Not all shinigami would share this sentiment, but keeping you safe is one of my duties. And I'd hate for one of Ichigo's friends to come to harm, too.”

Tatsuki raises an eyebrow. “Wait, so what IS your relationship to Ichigo, anyway?”

“It's complicated,” you sigh. “But I have his interests at heart as well. That's all you need to know for now.”

"I don't like it," Tatsuki sighs, shutting her eyes in thought. "But I guess I did ask for an explanation, didn't I?"

"You did," you nod. "But I'd prefer if you didn't tell Ichigo about what I am. You do understand, right?"

After a moment, Tatsuki nods. "That sounds like family stuff anyway, so I shouldn't get involved, right?"

"Probably. Now, about hollows..."

You give Tatsuki a brief explanation while Tenkotsuki converts your body back into a physical form. Hollows are best fought with the element of surprise, and from behind: they tend to be stronger in close range, so distance attacks are best if you have them. Most can heal their injuries, meaning the best way to kill them is with a strong enough blow to the head to shatter their mask.

"That all being said," you conclude as Ichigo comes back out of the hospital in his shinigami form alongside a visibly shaken Kanonji. "You shouldn't go out of your way to fight them. Not just now, anyway... leave it to someone with more experience."

“Now, if you'll excuse me,” you bow quietly to Tatsuki, “I have business with Kanonji.”

“Try not to break the poor guy,” Urahara chuckles to himself.

You push your way through the crowd towards Kanonji, and as you pass you crab him by the ear and drag him towards his trailer.

“You're coming with me, jackass,” you whisper into his ear to silence his complaints. “We're gonna have a nice chat about what you did to that demi-hollow.”

Kanonji grunts in a mixture of surprise and pain. “Ah, so you saw that, lady? Fine, fine, just quit draggin' me!”

“Nope,” you reply sternly, tossing him into the trailer and shutting the door behind you.

Once out of sight, you round on Kanonji. “So, have we learned not to jam sticks into souls now? You've seen what that does, correct?”

“Yes, ma'am,” he replies, seemingly sincere in his regret.

"Seems he knows what he did," Rosa muses. "And he's got some actual reiatsu... though it ain't much."

To be clear, there is no way for Kanonji to perform soul burial. Riku's not even sure whether his powers are close enough to a shinigami's to purify a hollow if he managed to kill one.

He could possibly help one move on by dealing with whatever kept it in the living world in the first place, were he not such a spazz.

Kanonji shakes his head solemnly. “Dozens.”

“Well then, I suppose there's no choice,” you sigh, drawing Tenkotsuki from thin air.

“Wait, now hold on miss!” Kanonji panics as you raise the blade. He shuts his eyes and waves his arms frantically. But instead of the slash he clearly expects, you merely bump him on the head with her hilt. The action leaves a glowing mark of kidō where contact was made that gradually fades, then you sheath your blade.

“There,” you announce. “You can open your eyes now, Kanonji.”

“Whew!” he exclaims loudly. “Thought that was the curtain-call!”

“I'm no executioner,” you growl. “But from this point on you're going to be monitored. I'll make arrangements for soul burials in the future, so just... quit poking things with sticks, would you?”

“Yes, ma'am.” Kanonji whimpers.

“Good boy.”

You need a drink and you hope that Isshin can deliver on that. It takes you mere moments to get to the Clinic, where you sense two powerful spiritual presences inside. Knocking on the door reveals a woman with the same color hair as Ichigo and a figure that's getting on towards Rangiku's.

Before you can speak, she has a tiny bow of reishi pointed at your head.

“What do the shinigami want here?” Masaki demands coolly. “Why come after us after all these years?”

You stare at her in surprise, blinking a few times. “Because... Isshin's my brother? Is that a real question?”

Masaki's eyes widen as she finally recognizes who you are. “Ah, Lady Riku! So sorry for the rude welcome, please come in!”

Her personality does a complete flip as she practically drags you inside by your neck, a wide grin on her face and her bow completely forgotten.

“It's been a long time!” she tells you as she forces you to take a seat. “I see you've been keeping well?”

“Well enough,” you reply somewhat awkwardly. “Though I'm a little surprised you didn't recognize me.”

Masaki laughs at her own forgetfulness. “Well, I didn't expect you to still look so young, so it caught me off guard!”

“Isshin!” she calls into the kitchen, “come be hospitable!”

“I know, I know,” Isshin replies, tossing a ceramic jug at you from the doorframe. “I was just getting some 'hospitality' from the pantry.”

“So, how's life treating you, Masaki?”

Masaki smiles calmly as Isshin sets out a few cups. “Not badly at all. With all three of my kids getting old enough not to have to worry about them all the time, I can finally relax every now and then.”

“That's nice,” you nod, taking a cup for yourself. “It's good seeing them starting to stand on their own, isn't it?”

“I'm especially proud of Ichigo,” Masaki continues, sipping at her sake. “He used to be such a timid boy, but now he's grown stronger.”

“About that,” you interrupt. “How much have you told the boy about your... history?”

“Not much,” Isshin sighs. “I mean, I'd kind of hoped it would never be an issue.”

“And I had my doubts about passing on the Quincy arts,” Masaki adds solemnly. “Unlike Ishida sensei, I have no intention of teaching Ichigo anything until I'm sure he's old enough to decide whether he wants to learn or not.”

“Doesn't that seem dangerous?” you ask.

Masaki shakes her head. “I've kept Ichigo safe this long, and he deserves to choose his future. That was a luxury neither I nor Isshin were offered, you know.”

So they want Ichigo to have a chance to live his life as a “normal” human? Rukia's appearance of course seems to complicate that fact.

“Like it or not,” you reply quietly, “Ichigo has already gotten involved in this business with Rukia. We can only do so much to protect him.”

After several long moments in thought, Masaki nods in agreement. She doesn't seem happy about it. “You may be right. He's already learned so much despite our wishes... maybe it's time to tell him the truth.”

“Not my call,” you insist, raising your hands. “But I'll do what I can to straighten things out on our end. I can't make any guarantees beyond giving it my best though.”

“That'll do,” Isshin assures you. “So how long are you planning to be here?”

“The air agrees with me here,” you muse thoughtfully. “But I have duties in the Seireitei. I'll leave a little offering at Sōken's grave, then consider heading back.”

“Will you be back?” Masaki asks.

You shrug. “Maybe. I've been teaching Arisawa how to protect herself, so I may come back to do the same for the other spiritually aware kids at Ichigo's school. And passing their end-of-year exams shouldn't be hard, so I can keep coming back until I'm satisfied even with a shoddy attendance record.”

“Never took you for a truant,” Isshin taunts you.

“And I never took you for a doctor,” you observe.

“Fair.”

You continue to drink quietly with your brother and sister-in-law before excusing yourself to head home. After placing some old-fashioned unfiltered sake at the Ishida family grave, Tenkotsuki's blade opens a portal back to the Seireitei. You find yourself back at the Senkaimon, where two different First Division guys are on duty tonight.

“Welcome back, Lady Shiba!” one greets you, obviously startled at your return. “Was your mission a success?”

“Sort of,” you sigh in semi-defeat. “Really, I just keep raising more questions.”

The next morning, Rangiku forces herself into your room while you're still dozing.

“Captain!” she scolds you. “You should have contacted me! What's going on with Rukia? What kept you?”

“She's fine for now,” you groan. “I'll do the paperwork later.”

“Another thing,” Rangiku continues, “you've been summoned to First Division headquarters, we got word a few moments ago.”

“Fine, fine,” you groan again, stumbling out of bed and into your uniform. “What was this about?”

“No idea,” your daughter admits. “The messenger was cagey with the details.”

“Who was the messenger?” you ask out of curiosity.

Rangiku shrugs. “One of those Onmitsu guys. I'm not invited, in case you were wondering.”

Interesting. Captain-only messages tend to be serious business.

You head through the portal in your room to meet Yoruichi, who greets you warmly. You'd forgotten that it's been a little while since you last saw her.

“How's Isshin?” she asks.

You shrug. “He's fine, but his brat's getting caught up in this mess with Rukia.”

“That's no good,” she frowns. “No wonder you've been so preoccupied... you really do see that boy as family, don't you? Anyway you got the message too, right?”

“Yeah,” you reply. “Captains only... wonder who else has been called?”

“No idea,” Yoruichi admits. “Central 46 probably just made some pointless decision or another.”

You and Yoruichi proceed towards the First Division headquarters, where you find several other Captains waiting already. Byakuya is there as well, and you make it a point to greet him.

“Hey there, little Byakuya,” you grin. “I made contact with Rukia. She was wounded, but she's recovering.”

“She should be doing so here,” Byakuya replies calmly. “Remaining in the living world is a breach of protocol.”

“I gave her permission,” you explain. “Her powers are diminished, so she's no threat to any humans. And she feels responsible for the humans her injury put at risk, so I'm letting her sort things out while she recovers.”

“Her sense of responsibility is no less than yours, I think.”

Finally, the Head Captain calls you and your fellow Captains to attention.

“So good of you to join us, Captain Kusajishi,” Yamamoto booms. “You should be among the first to know of this development.”

“That doesn't sound good,” you reply with a wary glare. “Might this have something to do with someone in my Division?”

“Kuchiki Rukia has been declared a wanted criminal by the Central 46,” he replies.

Byakuya closes his eyes in contemplation, while Yoruichi spares you an uncertain glance.

“On what grounds are they charging her?” you growl angrily.

Yamamoto glances at the notice he's been handed. “The charge is that there has been an illegal transfer of powers between Kuchiki Rukia and a living human, reported to be a high school student in Karakura town. This is a grave charge.”

You continue to glare, trying not to voice your doubt over this too loudly or too soon.

“And I assume they have evidence?” you press. “Or are we just taking the Central 46 at their word?”

“The evidence seems to be a report from the Research Bureau, who have been keeping track of a certain celebrity medium in the living world,” Yamamoto explains. “Last night they identified a filming on location at an abandoned hospital in Karakura where Kuchiki Rukia was visible meeting with a boy who possessed shinigami powers.”

They were watching the feed from last night? You wonder what else they may have seen... you assume if they had sighted you they would have mentioned it in the report, so for now you keep that fact quiet.

Yoruichi seems displeased at this news as well. “And so they intend to bring other Divisions into the Ninth's affairs? Usually direct kill orders are the only such case where Divisions aren't left to deal with their own internal problems.”

The Head Captain nods grimly. “It would appear so. In the case of such a serious accusation they do reserve the right to make such decisions, though officially she will be allowed twenty-four hours to comply with her orders to return.”

Without a word of explanation, Byakuya turns to leave.

“Please excuse me,” he tells you tersely. “I have family business to attend to.”

It'll either be not-quite Super Robot Wars in an OC setting, or a Naruto quest set in the Warring States period in an OC clan.
