Recently: You've arrived at the Pokemon league! Your first match is coming up! It will be a double battle

General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.

Write-ins for all votes or always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as it comes up.

Combat involves rolls! Once there's a clear winner, we roll for the move accuracy/crit/secondary effect. Usually it's just three 1d100s. Sometimes you can get a modifier from circumstances, so be creative! Add flair, do tricks with moves, mess with terrain, whatever!

Call me out on a mistake and receive an apology butt or suggestive picture.

You run up to Thelma. She’s one of your opponents in your match tomorrow morning.

She’s much older than you. You’d guess mid 30s. It’s still hard to keep in mind that trainers come in all ages and shapes.

“Hi.”

She turns around and almost jumps. “Oh. Hi.”

“My name’s Kat. I-”

“I know who you are.” She takes a step back. Her eyes are narrow and untrusting. “What is this? Trash talk? Some sort of trick? I’m not going to do anything to get myself disqualified and I’m not interested in eating anything you’ve baked.”

“I-”

She cuts you off again. “Whatever you’re playing at, I’m not interested. I won’t be humiliated like some rube on your show. Goodbye.” She starts to turn around.

The only person you remember really humiliating was Dick when you punched him in the groin. But he deserved it!

Jeez. What’s her problem? She didn't even let you talk. Fine. Whatever. You won’t feel bad about beating her tomorrow.

“Good luck!” You shout as she walks off. You try to sound like the bigger person at least. It’s hard to keep the tinge of sarcasm off of it.

You get to bed with Robin. Taking a series of deep breaths, just like Jeanine taught you, you manage to shake off enough anxiety to fall asleep. Tomorrow is a big day.

You wake up early, before the four different alarms you set. You and Robin enjoy a breakfast that feels almost too quick before heading out the door.

“Hey, champ-to-be.”

You turn around and see Jeanine and Vance. She grabs you and pulls you into a hug. Vance is hugging Robin. They trade off. You feel like you’re being tossed like a sack of flour.

“You guys have been working out!”

Jeanine laughs and shows off her bicep. “I have. Vance has been working on his inner peace.”

He scratches behind his head in that boyish way of his. “I'm not the aura master Jeanine is.”

“Are you guys just going to stand around jerking each other off?” You all turn to see Clair. She’s got her hair in twintails now, and she’s wearing a form-hiding sweater.

Vance runs to hug her. She punches him in the arm, which doesn't seem to phase or slow him at all. “Hey sis!”

“You idiot! You got yourself hurt.” She pushes her way up and out and points to Jeanine. “And you didn't keep him out of trouble at all!”

Jeanine just joins in and hugs Clair. You and Robin join in.

“I hate you all,” her word say, but her voice doesn't. “Idiots.”

You hold her tight. You hold everyone tight. You’ve missed them. The emotion of it really hits you as you’re flooded with their smells. You try to hold the hug as long as you can, not wanting to let go. Even the pain from your arm being squished doesn’t matter.

The other’s break it off before it gets awkward. You wouldn’t have minded awkward. Your face is cold now that it’s not pressed up against everyone.

Vance is looking mostly recovered. Jeanine looks totally fine.

“We don’t want to keep you. Your match is coming up soon, right?”

You check the clock hanging over the stadium entrance. There’s a bit of time. You left early so you could pick your Pokemon and maybe coordinate with your battling partner. Still, it’s the first round and you’ve come so far. You should be fine, right?

You researched everyone beforehand and you know one of your opponents has a Unfezant and Jumpluff, Thelma is an electrical engineer and probably favors electric Pokemon, and your partner Alvin will have an Aerodactyl. He also has a Vaporeon and Gogoat.

“Thanks. Sorry guys, I wish I could hang out right now.”

Vance gently pushes you. It’s like being scooted by a truck. “Go, go! We understand. We’ll be cheering you on, so go get ‘em! If you need inspiration, remember how I beat Clair!”

Jeanine giggles and playfully noogie’s Clair. You guess they both want to tease her too, but there’s no way Vance would make a crack about her boobs.

Clair harrumphs. “Laugh it up, cowti-” She catches herself. “Shut up, hippy.”

It’s weird, the things you miss. You love this. But you have to run. “I’ll see you all after the match!”

You rush off to find your partner. You’re cleared through to the battler’s waiting area and find him there.

“Hey, I’m Kat.”

“Alvin,” he offers his hand. The bearded man has a kindly smile. “It’s my third try. I promised my wife that if I didn’t place better than before, that I’d give it up and work for her dad. I’m going to be honest, I really don’t want to do that. I’ve been watching your show. You’re good. We’ve got this, right?”

“Yeah!” You’re feeling pumped. “We got this.”

He looks relieved. “So, what’s our plan?”

Hey Gobble, I was reading the Pastebins, and you don't have Shell Smash listed under Destiny. That was a pretty contentious vote if I remember. You didn't forget about it did you?
>>
“Are you sure you want me to just dictate the plan?”

He nods. “Yeah. If I knew what I was doing I wouldn’t be on my third try.”

“Alright. In that case, I have two notes. I think you should concentrate on offense. Leave the support and defensive stuff to me. Second, you need to open with someone other than your Aerodactyl.”

He looks at his Pokeball. “I’ve always opened with him. But I guess that makes sense. Well, alright. If I want to get farther I need to change things up.”

You hope that’s just nerves. He really doesn’t seem sure of himself.

He puts that Pokeball away and grabs another one. “Okay, if one of them has electric Pokemon, I should use Gogoat first.”

You glance out to the arena you’ll be fighting on. It’s just coming up now. There’s grass on your side, two large ponds in the middle, and a narrow land bridge that runs up to their side, where it’s dusty and full of rocks.

“In that case, my first Pokemon will be...”

“Fel, my Butterfree.”

He nods. “Sounds like a plan, then. Brace yourself, it’s going to get loud. Try to tune the announcer’s out, they’re just distracting.”

An aide with a headset gives you a motion to go out. You take a deep breath, then walk out into the nearly blinding light.

The sound of the crowd floods over your as your eyes adjust. It’s a bright day, but not Sunny Day bright. The stadium is packed with cheering crowds. It looks so clean. It’s better than ow you dreamed. Bigger, grander. Gigantic screens hang over the sides, and a blimp floats high above and slightly to the side.

“And on this side, Alvin and Kat!”

The crowd’s volume doubles.

“Alvin is a returning challenger to the league, and we all know the star Kat, who’s vanished from the public life and just now returned.”

Is that how they see you? Huh.

Alvin looks pale. The guy is like twice your age and been here before, but even he seems in awe.

There's a timer for the Pokemon to be thrown out, and a slightly longer one for before the match starts. From your research, it's typical that everyone just tosses at the last second.

You resist the urge to show off too much. You just give a single, very quick pose with one hand up and your hand on your waist, then you adjust your cap and look over the field. This is the league. This is serious. You’ve got to put every bit of mental energy towards the battle ahead.

You’d be completely crushed if you lost on your first battle.

Your heart pounds, your palms are sweaty. It’s not the crowds. The person you’re most worried about disappointing is yourself. No, that’s not true, you don’t want to let down your Pokemon. They’ve worked hard to make this happen.

You ready Fel’s ball. You know that just because he’s a common, small Pokemon doesn’t mean he can’t fight. He took on that robot without fear and did amazing. It’s your job to play to his strengths.

The countdown timer is both excruciatingly slow and way too fast. It finally comes time to toss your Pokemon.

“Fel! I choose you!”

He appears, floating a few feet over the field. Gogoat appears at his side. It’s got Sap Sipper.

On the opposite side, your opponents are an Unfeazent and Jolteon.

The buzzer rings out and the referee waves the flag. The battle is on.

Why did we bring a Flying to an Electric fight?
>>
“Jolteon! Pin Missile!”

Jolteon fire’s a rapid series of spiky green pointy things at Gogoat. Four hits!

“Aerial Ace on Gogoat!”

Unfeazent swoops down at the hurt grass type Pokemon. It flawless strikes, send Gogoat off it’s feet and flying backwards. On no! A critical hit!

“Gogoat! No!”

Alvin watches in horror as his Pokemon is taken out of the fight. He didn’t even get to use his first move.

The announcer's voice rings out. “In an amazing opening, both trainers focus on Gogoat! Looks like they’ve already taken him out.”

“Fel! Quick! Hit that Jolteon! Double-Powder let’s go!” Fel’s smart. He knows not to use Stun Spore on Jolteon, so instead he’ll use Poison Powder and Sleep powder.

“What’s this? That Butterfree is using two powder moves at once! How is that possible!”

You see the Jolteon slowly roll over to go to sleep. The Poison Powder will work on it while it’s out. You turn to Alvin, he’s panicking.
“Aerodactyl and Vaporeon are my strongest, but I’m worried about us getting ganged up on with electric attacks.” He reaches for Aerodactyl’s Pokeball. “That was just luck, right?”

Alvin looks to you. You nod. “That’s a good idea. He’s fast, right?”

“Yeah. Yeah! Really fast.” You hear his shattered confidence spark up just the tiniest bit.

He tosses his Aerodactyl out.

The crowd cheers and the announcers speak up again. “And another Pokemon weak to electric type moves.”

“This is the sort of thing that happens in the early rounds, Skip. Trainers forget about the basics like types.”

He flinches. “Tune it out. Tune it out. Tune it out. Tune it out.”

The enemy team is already moving. Looks like Thelma is grabbing her other Pokeball. Took looks like he's discussing some plan with her.

Thelma swaps her Jolteon out, and replaces it with a Zebstrika. You make a mental note that it has Lightning Rod.

Aerodactyl performs a powerful Earthquake, rocking the arena. Zebstrika is struck. It’s hurt but not out. The shape of the arena seems to be dampening the effect slightly, since there’s a thin land bridge between your side and theirs. The water between both sides rocks violently, causing waves to pop up between your line of sight to the other side for a half second at a time.

Unfeazent counters by hitting Fel with an Aerial Ace. Fel takes it on the forehead. Thanks to your intense stat training, Fel can take a hit well for a Pokemon of his size. It’s still super-effective, though.

“Tailwind! Let’s go!”

Fel spins around at your command. Oh no. Maybe that blow rattled him more than you thought! He performs the Tailwind, but it doesn't seem to work right. All he ends up doing is creating a small wind funnel over the water. It’s not even much of an obstacle, as any Pokemon can easily avoid it.

There’s some confusion and a little laughter from the crowd. Fel shake’s his head and regains his focus.

“An unfortunate turn of events for Kat, as her Butterfree seems to have flubbed it’s attack. I'm not even sure what that was supposed to be.”

“Rock Slide! Let’s go!”

Aerodactyl attacks both enemy Pokemon with the move. Unfeazent is hurt, and Zebstrika is struck hard. You’re relieved to see it falter and teeter over. His Aerodactyl’s attack power is pretty impressive.

“Yes!” he jumps.

Unfeazent uses Feather Dance on Aerodactyl. It seems even more effective than you’d expect. Aerodactyl is covered in feathers. His attack power is probably next to nothing now.

“No! Nononono!”

“Fel! Keep pumping that funnel full of powders. Just let loose as best you can!”

Fel hovers around the wind funnel and looses all his powders into it. Since it’s an unmoving target, he doesn’t have to aim. He still misses some though. The rest is sucked up into it, turning it into a colourful tornado.

“A beautiful display! If this were a contest, they’d be doing great!” The announcer’s chuckle.

Alvin is pulling his face, stressing out. “Kat! I thought you were going to cover me! I can’t attack like this!”

This is bad. Aerodactyl’s attacks won’t hurt much at all.

Thelma throws out her Jolteon. It’s asleep and poisoned, but when it wakes up they’ll surely gang up on you, since Aerodactyl isn’t much of a threat anymore.

You’re almost uncomfortable with the amount of trust he’s putting in you. The league is tough, and this is just the first round and things are not going as smoothly as you thought it would.

Okay. Don’t panic. You have this. “Fel, be ready with String shot.”

Fel and Aerodactyl fly out over the water, baiting Unfezant. You notice that he’s holding Aerodactyl back a bit, not attacking right away. “Get ready!”

Unfezant nails Fel with an Aerial Ace. It’s a strong blow, and you know Fel can’t take another, even with all his extra training. Still, Fel manages to fire off a String Shot and pulls on Unfezant. Surprising everyone, Unfezant is yanked backwards.

“Yes! Good job! Right into the funnel!”

Fel drags the Flying type Pokemon back. The funnel full of powder is between both Pokemon. As soon as Unfezant and it’s trainer realize what’s going on, the start to pull back.

And Unfezant is strong.

Still, Fel is reeling him in very slowly.. The crowd and announcer go wild.

“Alright! Now, Aerodactyl! Smack Down!”

Aerodactyl smacks Unfezant down with a rock. It doesn’t hurt at all, but it sinks Unfezant down into the water. Fel is pulled towards it as it falls, but stops short of being sucked into the funnel. Instead, he pulls the now floundering Unfezant up and into the funnel, absolutely coating it in various powders. The funnel clears up. Looks like everything was emptied onto the bird Pokemon

Jolteon stirs and begins to wake. Unfezant is so covered that it doesn’t seem to be able to fly right. You think the judge is going to pronounce it unable to battle unless they do something quickly.

You see Unfezant trying to do something.

Aerodactyl chases after Unfezant. “Oh no you don’t!”

The bird Pokemon zoom through the air. Unfezant is extremely slow and unable to get away or really even see where it’s going. “Crunch! Hurry!”

Aerodactyl hit’s Unfezant for like, no damage, but it keeps Unfezant from being able to try anything to get rid of the powders.

Fel flies in to attack Jolteon. Before he can, Jolteon wakes up and acts using its superior speed. Oh no. That’s Thunderbolt!

Fel is nailed. It’s not the world’s strongest hit, but it’s enough to knock him out of the sky.

“Fel! No!”

As he’s coming down though, he hits Jolteon by slamming into it. You see a faint green energy dispersed. Looks like he still managed to land the Bug Buzz before passing out.

Jolteon pushes Fel off of itself. It looks very hurt though. It only has precious seconds left of fight left in it before the poison will finish it off.

Unfezant slows, then finally comes to a stop with a very rough landing. The ref doesn’t call it as officially out yet, but brings up a signal flag. It’s an indicator that they’re considering it unless the Pokemon shows otherwise. It’s trainer recalls it and prepares to toss out a new Pokemon.

You recall Fel. “You did well. I'm very proud of you.”

Whoever you send out next will have to contend with One last move from Jolteon, and whatever other Pokemon Took uses. Your research showed that he liked to use Jumpluff.

“Devon, I need you, buddy.”

You throw out your very first Pokemon. He can feel your intent with just a glance. “Hey buddy, are you ready?”

He growls fire.

At the same time, Took throws out his Jumpluff. He looks upset at the matchup, but not that much. He must have some sort of counter strategy.

Jolteon and Jumpluff move into position to attack. Aerodactyl can’t hurt anybody really, but he’s not out. Unless something happens, Jolteon will probably faint right away.

>>
Aerodactyl flies in and attacks the Jumpluff with a Fire Fang.

Jumpluff deftly avoids the attack, hopping over the rock Pokemon.

Jolteon fires off another Thunderbolt. It’s weak, but it lands on Devon. As he’s distracted with that, Jumpluff closes the distance and nails him with Return. It’s a shockingly powerful blow that slams Devon down into the dirt.

“Devon! Don’t give up! Roar!”

He stirs up, leg’s shaking. Smoke drifts out from between his teeth. Suddenly the smoke is sucked in. “ROAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!”

Jumpluff looks like it’s made the worst mistake of it’s life. It flies back to it’s Pokeball, and Unfezant is brought back out.

Jolteon passes out. The timing gives the impression that it fainted from shock from Devon’s roar.

Unfezant looks terrible. Like it’s been in some industrial accident. You doubt it will be able to do much. The judges look ready to call it as unfit to battle.

Unfezant fails to do much but look pretty pitiful. The referee’s are quick to make the call, but somehow, despite everything, it summons everything it has for one last attack. It flails wildly at Aerodactyl with renewed fury. Both bird Pokemon battle in the sky.

Unfezant drops to the ground, finally defeated. This was the best it could have hoped for, but it’s enough.

Aerodactyl is soaked in it’s powders. He looks terrible and won’t be able to stay in much longer. Not that it was doing much, but still. You already see the referees holding up the warning flag for it. Unless they see evidence to the contrary and quickly, they’ll judge it to be unable to battle.

"A surprising move from Took. Somehow managing to push his Pokemon for one last attack to even the odds!"

Took quickly replaces it with Jumpluff. it looks ready to tangle. It’s got a type disadvantage, but it’s very healthy, and Devon is hurt.

A hush comes over the crowd. This is down to the wire.

I don't.
>>
>>43535672
Why? I mean if we actually made poor enough strategic choices to warrant such a thing then yeah that'd be one thing, but we're doing the best we can with our pokemon and our moves. It wouldn't be because of our choices, but purely due to an RNG. And that's not fun. Like the players will be so discouraged and having to hear Kat's narration would also be so disappointing that Gobble might as well just take a hiatus and release the rest of the quest on pastebin.
>>
What if he is just using spore?
>>
>>43535705
We can hope, also I don't think Jumpluff has any priority moves so given that being Mega slightly boosts Devon's s. Defense and almost doubles his physical defense, it's unlikely he's going to knock Devon out.

Rolled 75 (1d100)

Your heart is pounding. You feel like you’re going to vomit. Sweat flops down your face as Devon mega-evolves. “Flamethrower!”

Devon unleashes the very fires of hell onto Jumpluff. WIth Mega-evolution and Nasty plot, it’s incredibly powerful, even if it’s a sloppy execution. The poor thing suffers outrageous damage.

But somehow it endures. Your head is spinning as you distantly watch it slam into Devon. It must be summoning incredible willpower.

Jumpluff struggles to get up. You can see Took urging it up in the distance. The referee’s watch closely as it very slowly pushes itself to get up. It’s unclear if it will or not.

Devon struggles to his feet too. He’s hurting badly. You’ve been giving him vitamins, training, and love. You know that Took has been doing the same with his Pokemon too.

You can feel him. He wants to keep fighting. Because of the mega-evolution, you know he’s barely aware of his surroundings, but he doesn’t want to give up. He’s hurt badly though.

If he presses on, there’s a very real chance he’ll risk a serious, permanent injury, or even an outside chance of worse.

But he knows that. He wants to keep going. Can you say no? Can you live with yourself if you say yes?

>Call it off and throw in the towel. You’re done
>Push on. It’s what Devon wants and you respect that

“Get up Devon! I believe in you!”

Devon’s legs shake as he pushes on. He slowly drags himself forward. Actually, hey, that’s not so slow! “Yes! You can do it!”

Jumpluff is rolling himself up. Took is screaming on his side of the arena.

Both Pokemon pick up speed as they meet in the middle. Devon stumbles just imperceptibly, but keeps going. You don’t even feel any apprehension from Devon from that, so you let it go. He must not have felt anything.

Before the two Pokemon meet, Jumpluff keels over. A referee immediately calls an end to the fight. The crowd goes wild!

And then you see Aerodactyl in the corner. It’s only now fainting. Referee’s look like they've been debating about him.

Your eyes go back to Devon. He starts running towards you. You’re already on your way towards him before you even realize it.

You hug him, and he licks your face weakly. You feel hot tears roll down your cheek. You’re so glad he’s okay.

His leg! You check the leg he stumbled on. You poke around it carefully, inspecting it. It looks fine and he doesn't seem to feel any particular injury there, but there’s a small scar. You don’t think his fur will grow exactly right there anymore. It’s such a small spot that you’re probably the only person who’ll ever notice it.

Devon nudges you. You should be sad. He won for you. Didn't you see?

You hug him again.
