You wake up in the back of a van. It's not yours.

You right yourself, straightening your stiff back as best you can. You twist your torso left and then right, the way you saw older inmates do in the prison yard. This body is racking up more miles than ever.

Without making too much noise, you give yourself a once over and find that you haven’t sustained any physical injuries. The extensive bruising and swelling that had been irritating you all day has also receded, though it’s still a little painful to the touch. This is what your mother might have called a pequeño milagro but you’re more inclined to see it as grande. For you.

The road bumps softly beneath the wheels of the van and you watch as street lights slide by. You’re back in Hong Kong for sure. The light they cast mingles with the darkness inside the van and your eyes are drawn to the console in the front seat. It’s 4:13 A.M.

"You awake back there?"

"Yeah?"

“You were right loopy before. Glad you’re feeling better.”

You're pretty sure the british voice belongs to Lucas, despite the slight warp of sadness.

>Traits Gained:
>Racer: +2 to Driving Rolls (upgrade from Driver)
>Speed Demon: +1 to Driving Rolls where you put it all on the line (failures become more severe)
>Fuzzed: Extended by unknown amount
>Strung out: -2 to STR/STA until you get some proper rest.
>Minor weight loss: you have lost some weight, enabling you to fit into tighter spaces and a chance of an additional modifier on speed rolls.
>Good in bed: When a woman opens a fortune cookie, you’re the one who makes it come true. Lowered seduction DCs.
>Good First Aid – You can react in an emergency (upgrade from basic)

Traits Lost:
>Badly bruised- (neg 1 to health, neg one to STR/STA)

Current Stats:

Health: [11/11]
Awareness (helps detect threats): 12
Intelligence: -1
Speed: +1
Charisma: +1
Stamina/Strength (pool): 10/10 (max lowered by two)

[2/3] (my bad)

“You’re probably looking for this.”

He tosses back a neatly bound stack of bills.

“It’s all there. You can count if you like. Rear passenger lights on.”

You wince as the back seat is flooded with white light. You count the bills and find that they total $4000. You’re a little confused but you thank Lucas for the windfall.

“There’s also the matter of your prize.”

“Right… my prize.”

“Obviously, you can’t have Brody’s car. But Derek has offered his truck and I’ll let you keep the Elevon if you like.”

The Elevon… that sounds familiar. You massage your left temple with three fingers and the memories begin to return, bit by bit. You remember taking a gamble and racing Derek. You remember climbing Tai Mo Shan with a caravan of street racers… a punk with green eyebrows, some douchebag kicking a girl mechanic. A curly haired brit with a jaw for bricklaying walking towards you in a magenta jacket, 100mm of tobacco and fire bouncing between his lips as he shouts:

“C’mon yank, it’s go time!”

You run to the Elevon and pull into a starting position. From there, your memories become a loose series of snapshots. Trees, rock, fields, and spotters caught in the headlights. Chaos and then a narrow victory. The jagged tip of a broken tibia, pushing through the skin beneath the knee.
>>
>>43564307
[3/4] (my bad... again)

You clutch your own knee, half expecting to feel the protruding bone there, but find only the fabric of your pants.

“Christ,” you mutter and then lift your head towards Lucas, “Was everyone okay?”

“You don’t remember, do you?”

“Not everything, no.”

“You were halfway out of your mind by the time I made it down to the site of the accident. Practically had to wrestle you away from the Medcorp goons that Jake called in. He was the one who finally explained to me what the bloody fuck had happened.”

“Brody’s leg is pretty much shot, we all knew that as soon as we saw it. They gave him a choice to have it amputated and replaced with one of their stock prosthetics, pressed him on it just as soon as he regained consciousness really. Last I saw, his response was to spit on them as they hauled him into the blood wagon. Admirable but probably not too wise. I sort of wish he had taken the offer.”

“Why?”

“Because we’re team, dammit and Brody had us all lined up to compete next week in the big Street Prix. Without him, we have to forfeit our spot. If he had taken the fucking prosthesis, they’d just saw the leg off and he’d be good to go in three fucking days. It wouldn’t be the same but he could still race. Goddamn. Goddamn.”
>>
>>43564327
[4/4]

He takes a breath.

“Listen, Jake told me about how you helped Brody out back there. I’m a little fucked right now but it’s really the least I can do to pitch in for his share of the wager. I’ve got a cycle I don’t ride too much anymore and a stock Tesla Quant that I keep meaning to get tuned up. I’d like to offer them both to you as choices, in addition to the Elevon and Derek’s truck.”

“That’s… generous. When do I get to pick?”

“I left the Elevon with a guy I know and Derek is right behind us. We can head to my place right now if you want to look. Otherwise I can drop you off somewhere convenient for you and we’ll pick this up tomorrow. Derek and I want to get to the hospital to talk to Brody anyway.”

You still have a fair amount of time before you’re expected to show up for work this morning.

>Awareness (helps detect threats): 12

I've been wondering about this for weeks.

Why have the other stats turned into saying the roll bonuses, while this one is still a D&D style thing with the roll bonus implied and derived from that?

>>43564342
>”I’ll go with you guys to the hospital”
Honestly, maybe Vince could, in addition to showing more sympathy for the injured guy, see if there's some pills to help with his concussion...
>>
>>43564342
>in addition to the Elevon and Derek’s truck.”
Wait, what were the terms of the deal.

> If I win though, I'd like my pick from your cars.

And doesn't Lucas have...

>The three Brits have customized their cars past the point of you being able to easily identify the models, though you’re virtually certain that Lucas is driving some kind of exotic SAN import. Derek and Brody’s cars are low-key by comparison, though their colorful mods make that statement very relative.

He conspicuously didn't mention the SAN import!

Vince really is out of it right now. Best to play hardball tomorrow.
>>
>>43564342
So Jake is the Brit who ruined everything.

he was british right.
>>
>>43564584

This is a good point, you could press Lucas on it if you want but it's doubtful he'll give in on handing over his baby when it was Brody who lost.

>>43564639

He's Chinese, just an English first name.

>>43564470
>>43564494
>>43564584
>>43564639

You owe these guys something for being such good sports about this and from what you can recall, Brody gave you a race for the ages.

“Listen… Maybe I’ll just go to the hospital with you guys. My winnings can wait; I’ve got a taxi voucher from work.”
“You don’t have to.”
“No, we should go see your friend as soon as possible… I know I wouldn’t want to be alone in a MedCorp Hosp.”

Lucas says nothing more, but he changes course at the next intersection. A little while later, you pull up outside an odd looking but enormous building. The MedCorp logo glows over the entrance way and underneath it, the number 5. That designation is the closest thing this place has to a name.
>>
>>43564743
In the lobby, you spot Jake, the driver responsible for Brody’s accident. He looks worn down but leaps to his feet to talk to Lucas when you walk in with him and Derek. Lucas ignores him and Derek gives him a hateful look. You opt to contain yourself until after you’ve seen Brody.

Derek is the one who does the talking with the receptionist and gets Brody’s room number, on the 17th floor. He’s exceedingly polite in the exchange and thanks her before you all walk away to the elevator.

Brody’s room is windowless, lit only by flourescent tube lights that flicker at awkward intervals. He’s awake; the leg is elevated and already in a cast. Though his face is pale and the space under his eyes baggy and blue, he seems glad to see you all and is quick to escalate an argument between himself and Lucas about the Street Prix.
It gets heated as Lucas tries to pressure Brody into getting the amputation but Derek interjects as a peacemaker, reminding them both that the cars aren’t what matter right now.

Brody calls you forward and shakes your hand, thanking you for the rescue and “the best fucking race” he’s had in years. He’s apologetic about not actually being able to hand his car over to you.

“I had a WaHa last week, but I sold it so the garage is empty at the moment.”

>tell him it was just the right thing to do
>ask if the doctors told him how long he’ll need to recover
>offer to rematch him when he gets better
>ask why he won’t get the amputation
>ask about the Street Prix

>>

Finally we meet the third major megacorp.

There are only 3 big guys locally right.
>>
>>43564766

There are others of varying sizes but these are the three largest that play a roll in everyday life and governance of the city.

Essentially, occupying factions.
>>
>>43564761
>>ask if the doctors told him how long he’ll need to recover
Totally empathetic. Not doing it for practical reasons at all.

>>43564716
Well maybe if we're also his only chance at racing in the Prix it would be enough to convince him tomorrow.
>>
>>43564761
>>ask why he won’t get the amputation
>>
>>43564868
>how long

"So... what's the recovery time?"

You do your best to sound empathetic.

"Probably a month turnaround according to the docs. I think they're exaggerating though, should be sooner with all the bone builder shots they're pumping in to me."

He pulls up his sleeve and removes a cotton bandage to show a bruised injection site.

"It's still going to be at least two weeks before they open up the knee..." Lucas grumbles.

"Yeah well, I like the leg natural. You'll appreciate it when it's back to normal."

"If it goes back to normal."

>Bone builders huh? What other neat meds do they have you on?
>So there's no way you're gonna race in this Street Prix? What a shame.

Vince is gonna need a new apartment building, one with decent security that doesn't ask questions when it comes to residents.

At least to have a secure garage for his new race car, not to mention eventually Jeremy.

>>43565006
>>43565072

"Bone builders?"

"Yeah, supposedly they supercharge my ostro-somethings."

"Any other good drugs?"

He cracks a wincing grin.

"You're a damn degenerate, aren't you Yank? They've got me on some good painkillers. I can't even feel the leg to be honest, but it's all localized. Nobody wants to let you get high these days."

"Well, if you feel like sharing..."

He laughs.

"Fuck no. I need all that shit I can get. But maybe you can palm something in the hallway, assuming you can get out of the way of the cams."

Derek chimes in.

"Nice of you to give tips on how to rob the place, Brody."

"Ah, they're greedy fuckers anyway. I'm not looking forward to my first experience with an American healthcare bill."

"Well, maybe you can win back what you need in a race when you get out."

"You offering, yank?"

"Just a thought."

"Yeah... we'll listen. I was thinking, Lucas here is all upset about us not going to the Prix. You want to go in my stead so we have a qualifying team of three?"

>yes

If he gives up his baby, all he has left is the stock Quant. He's not going to want to race in that, so taking the choice here more or less disqualifies you from taking the SAN.
>>
>>43565290

I'll still let you roll to convince him if you want but it would be a very high DC.
>>
>>43565290

>>
>>43565319

This would be viable but I think you should weigh that against what the next post reveals.
>>
>>43565290
>, all he has left is the stock Quant.
Doesn't he own the Elevon?

And would that mean disqualifying taking Derek's truck too?

Man they are bad at losing.
>>
>>43565338
Oh right... the prize.
>>
>>43565290

Derek and Lucas stare at you as you mull the offer.

“What’s the prize for winning?”

“300k. You’d split it with Lucas and Derek, so your share would be 100k.”

That’s a lot of money. With that and the money you should be getting from Lopez and the possible promotion to Elite, you could be swimming in cash pretty soon. The doors that would open…

While your inner Trump tells you that you have the racers over a barrel, some other inner voice tells you that being a dick right now might not be worth it.

"For 100 grand, I'm in. When's the race?"

"Saturday night, the day after the Hong Kong Grand Prix."

"Right, the Hong Kong Grand Prix.."

You'd honestly forgot that that was going on this week. Check thread 5, true believers!

"In the meantime, we'll stay in touch. There are other people who are gonna want to race Brody this week, so we could sub you in for him there if you like."

There's an exchange of phone numbers between the four of you and soon all the racers are in your contacts. Your phone seems to have automatically started tracking theirs as well, though you don't mention that to them.

>ask one of them to take you "home" now

>>
>>43565784

You excuse yourself and step out into the hall, claiming you have to visit the bathroom.

A cart full of meds sits conveniently unattended just down the hall, the nurse using it obviously being preoccupied with a crying patient in one of the nearby rooms. There are cameras on both ends of the hallway though, and they’d have an easy LOS on you if you just approached the cart as is. Behind you, a television beeps monotnously, displaying the vital signs of the floors patients.

You pull out your illegal and start looking through some apps, hoping to find something that will work to solve this little conundrum.

Choose one app:

You thumb the hideous face of a gorgon and suddenly dozens of panels pop up on your screen, displaying views from very camera on this floor. You're a little shocked that the security is so weak here that any Cit with an illegal smartphone could hack in with an app, but given the corners that are obviously being cut here already maybe its not that surprising.

You narrow it down to the three (?!) cameras that show you standing in the hallway. The third camera is very sneakily mounted inside the life support TV...

You step out of their LOS and into a corner of the stairwell where you can't be seen before pressing the record button, creating a three second recording that you then loop back to the cameras.

Now all you need to do is grab the drugs themselves.

The ride to Lucas' house is longer than you might have expected but his house is bigger than you expected too, practically a mansion with a four car garage that your little group makes a beeline for after Lucas parks the van on the curb.

The Elevon is parked inside the garage, looking modest with its brown and black paintjob. There's a motorcycle with seemingly transparent body and oddly spindly form standing by itself in the back and a car which Lucas pulls the cover from, revealing a neon-green coupe.

The coupe has enormous wheel wells and an extremely streamlined shape. Looking under the hood, the engine is no joke either, pushing the limits for what you know is available under the law.

"That's the Quant. It has one of the most responsive computer systems on the planet built into it and it's easy to customize."

"The cycle is a Visperdi Razor."

He walks over to it and flicks a switch, changing the body from one color to another.

"It's no Texan PowerBall but it's small and manueverable. If you picked it, I'd still let you race in the Quant, you just couldn't keep it is all."

"The truck outside has a bigger engine than any of these, and storage room to boot." adds Derek.

"Do you want him to take your truck?"

"Uh, not really."

Pick one.

Truck

Calling it for the Elevon. Writing.
>>
>>43566920

"I'll stick with the Elevon."

"You sure? It's a bit of a plodder."

"I think I know it well enough."

Derek immediately begins talking behind your back.

"He'll be a liability in the race."

"Derek, you fucking lost to him. Vince, you're going to have a hard time getting that thing tuned up. If it's any help, I've still got the number of the original owner."

You plug the info into your phone but no tracking signal appears. Looks like that only happens when you have the number and are in range... whatever the range limit on this thing is.

You bid the two brits goodbye and take the keys from Lucas. The Elevon purrs when you turn in the ignition and suddenly you're back out on the street.

It takes you a few blocks to realize the Elevon doesn't have built in GPS and you turn on your phone for guidance back to:

You dial Lopez using your illegal phone as soon as you’re relatively confident in your route back to work. His secretary picks up.

“I’m looking for Detective Lopez.”

“I’m sorry, who is this?”

“Tell him Vince is calling.”

“Just a moment.”

You can hear the receiver being covered with something that fails to muffle the secretary yelling about a “Vince” on the phone. You can also hear Lopez’s string of curses in response.

“I’m sorry, the detective isn’t in yet today. We’ll call you back as soon as possible, kay?”

>fuck that, get his ass on the line
>”kay”
>tell the detective "write-in"
>>
>>43567335
>tell the detective
Give him this number. He can reach me at it finally since I got a phone.

Might be able to cash in that rain check from Sunday.
>>
>>43567335
>>”kay”
>>
>>43567390
>>43567514

"Tell the detective my number is XXX-XXX-XXXX"

"Could you repeat that?"

"Don't you people tap all these calls? Why do you need me to repeat shit? It's XXX-XXX-XXXX. Pass it on to him as soon as he's ready to crawl out from behind a desk."

You hang up. Work is another 10 minutes away, so you flick on the radio. The Elevon only gets old FM stations but they're playing the blues.

The music wraps you like a warm blanket as you pull into the GEC parking complex with the Elevon. You're not exactly early, as somehow 3 hours have elapsed since you woke up in the van this morning. Other Exterminators have parked everywhere and a few are walking to the elevators.

Their uniforms are clean and unrumpled, unlike yours. And they're all so fresh-faced that you want to punch them. But you suppose they're not likely to survive their first week anyway.

You have to wait in the armory before seeing Devlinson but you eventually do get the go ahead.

"Vince."
"Boss."
"I have something of yours."

He lifts up your bag of cocaine and places it on the desk.

You slide $200 dollars across the desk and Devlinson pockets it swiftly.

It's a little lighter than it was before.

"Well, with that out of the way, I've got a real quick job for you today Vince."

"Quick? Not "easy" this time?"

He laughs. He's in a good mood this morning.

"Yeah, I think it'll be quick for you. Just a basement full of mutarats on the outskirts of Kowloon. Not even that far away."

He slides you the brief.

"Lay down some bait and I'm sure you'll be done in no time. But first you're going to have to go see Mrs. Shan."

"And that's everything?"

"That's everything, unless you made up your mind about the Elite promotion."

>I did
>I'll go see Mrs. Shan now
>I'm going to go see Silver Pete first

Also Vince needs to learn all the functions of his phone before meeting Shan. He needs to record blackmail material if he wants Jeremy back.

"I haven't. Now if you don't mind, I've gotta look nice for the boss lady."

"You do that!"

Devlinson laughs again but transitions into a hacking cough as you leave the office.

In the armory, you straighten yourself out as best you can and review your phones holo-recording function.

As you get ready to head to the executive floor, you catch a fragment of the other Exterminators discussing the news.

"...brink of war!"

>End Thread

I'm ending it here guys, participation has dwindled for the night and I'm really tired.

If you want to discuss something, I've been thinking about what I might do when Exterminator Quest ends.

1. Novelize the quest
2. Run a new quest based on Translyvannian Scholomance
3. A sort of fan-fic quest based on Inherent Vice
4. Fug off from /tg/ and just write some shit
5. Sci-fi racing quest of some sort.

I'm honestly pretty sorry about not running further tonight. I just want to mash my head into my typewriter and maybe take something for the possible cold I feel coming on.

Shit... just got here and its already done. Ah well, still lots fun. Also that racing quest sounds nice but a novelization of this would work pretty well.

>>43570265

It represents that je ne sais quoi that certain well-made or loved vehicles have. Partly it represents aspects of the car not covered by the other stats and partly it represents how well constructed or designed the car originally was and how many mods it has.

A car would gain heart depending on how much work was put into it and how well all its modifications work together. Derek's truck is big and strong, but the mods are mediocre. The Quant is straight up stock but had a very high degree of customizability that you could have leveraged into a high heart score. The Razor was an evolutionary endpoint for dirtbikes basically and designed to the highest degree.

A vehicle with a high heart score basically has high flexibility and survivability. If that makes sense. I felt a bit woozy typing it.

Reminder of the lie to tell Chen.

>This weekend I got involved in an underworld shootout, and probably pissed off the wrong people.
>So I can't exactly go to the Scyths about this, I'm not exactly clean.
>They came after me, and hurt Jeremy...bad.
>He's better now, and i'm having him stay with a friend until I resolve this somehow. It might be dangerous to be associated with me.
>Sorry about this.
>[muffled jazz music playing in the distance]
>Menu -> Item -> 1 Booze -> Use

Don't risk having conversation over the phone, obviously.

Also blackmail plan.
>set phone to holo recording stealth mode
>set it to send an encrypted backup to Jeremy's phone in case of discovery
>feign ignorance, assume the recording is a spyware rootkit on phone you bought from shady underworld guys for cheap
>encrypt the backup video with a key Vince can keep in a flash drive so Crusty & Co can't have it till they hand over Jeremy
>edit holo-footage, if possible, before handing it over, to mask Vince's identifying features/voice.

Since odds are...she needs help disposing of the bodies. And disposing of her husband.

Good news, simmons.

...Hong Kong does not have 'high schools', you burger-huffing eagle-lander. They use the Britbongistani system.

>Sept – July
Also school was still in session regularly, and it's summer, so presumably it's June or July right now.

If he just turned 14 he was at the end of 2nd year of junior secondary school before he went mad with power and became king of the roach people.
