105.5: Through Oni Eyes.

[X] But that's stupid, Kiku.
[X] Ask if you are allowed to pray to your master here or not.

Sitting next to the bedding where your lover and comrade in arms is convalescing, you look at the bright, fiery gold-and-crimson dragon that is your master's priestess. She looks back with molten eyes of shining metal, her pearl thick and heavy enough that you can see it even now. Kiku-san tilts her head at your incredulous expression.

The fact that your master, Ryuu Ryukusa, has only just started telling her First Wife – very young sister of the old dragon before you – and her other warriors and family that she is capable of killing and feels remorse for those times she has killed in the past is a little confusing. Not because she's troubled by it, as much as she's troubled that she's less troubled by it. Being a more elemental creature yourself, it only makes sense that a death-dragon such as your master would be able to kill and not be pained by it. That others might even think about judging her for it is....

Well, it's stupid, is what it is.

“But that's stupid, Kiku-sama. She is a Water dragonette, of course she would resort to permanent solutions to dangerous situations.” You understand, sort of, that this sort of talk upsets mortals. It's not that you're immortal, it's more than you grew up in Heaven, surrounded by immortals constantly. Abusive and hateful ones mostly, but even the other servants of Kuraokami are not mortal, and their viewpoints are more basic than mortal ones are.
>>
>>43671521
Fortunately, Kiku-san doesn't seem offended by your statement, especially since she as much as admitted that she understands that concept as well. “I understand that, and you understand that, but aniki isn't like us. She's a lot deeper than we are.” The beautiful little dragon closes her eyes and sighs. “The things that make Ryuu Ryukusa herself are things that my sister is not very used to. I do not think Inau-san is used to them either.” The Death-Fox is used to them, because it's a Death-Fox. That goes without saying.

You struggle with the concept for a moment more, then shake your head. “Do we have some time before the ceremony, Kiku-sama? I would like to pray to aniki, if that's allowed here, and take care of Akari-chan.” You're not a very complex person, you know this; you act according to your nature, within the limitations placed upon you by your association with your master. As long as Er yin-sensei and Kiku-san understand, they'll take care of things like that better than you can.

“Yes, there is time. You can pray to aniki here, but don't make any offerings. Offerings today are for Owatatsumi only.” You bow your head to the priestess, and she slithers quickly across the room of the small temple, where your master is speaking with the Death-Fox, the Huntress, and First Wife. You might have a few moments alone now.

>Choose one. The fourth option is one of three options that apply specifically to the person Yui is dealing with and may be added to the single choice. Write ins are accepted as always.
[] Pray to your master.
[] Make offerings to Ryujin Owatatsumi.
[] Check on Akari-chan thoroughly.

[X] Pray to your master.
[+] Consider what has changed since Ryukusa chose to tame you.

You half crawl, half-shift your body around your sleeping lover's bed until you're facing the North, the proper direction for prayers to reach your master. True, it's not precisely aligned to the feng shui of the temple itself, but this is really a temple to Ryujin-ue so that's understandable. It's not that you don't respect Ryujin-ue, but he's....well, it is much like your previous master, and that's a little distressing to think about.

So you don't, and you clap your hands together, twice, softly, the flash of chi that emanates from your hands washing over everything in the temple, illuminating the pearls and hearts of those here momentarily, even with your eyes closed. You silently pray that your master becomes better at being mortal, and better at accepting the things that are part of their nature, and growing though the things that they need to leave behind. You pray that your master is strong enough to embrace her destinies, and that they are smart enough to avoid their fates, and that they are wise enough to step lightly between them. You also pray that your master accepts your prayers, as well as the love you make them with.

The potent prayers escape you, floating on the currents that connect you to your master, and you feel the warmth of your master's love for you, the huge wash of the love she extends to you, your lover, First Wife, her Priestess, her warriors. Your family. Your clan. You smile and clap your hands twice, letting the chi you drew fade away now, closing the prayer. Your master turns her attention back to the others and you relax.

“Yui?”
>>
>>43672142
The voice is soft, pained, and you quickly turn all your attention to the sleep jade dragon that occupies the soft futon. Her eyes open, gems the color of dried blood, yet full of warmth and quiet, unspoken joy. Unfortunately the joy is eclipsed by pain. “Hai, Akari-chan, I am here.” you dip a cloth in a bowl of clean water and lay it across her horns, the chipped jade shimmering with the presence of the strange god that sacrificed himself to her. She sighs softly.

Akari is healing quickly, and the stitches are almost ready to come out – she won't heal with them in, because they are made of the element most inimical to Stone. “Water, please,” she whispers, and you quickly fill a shallow bowl with some fresh water for her to sip from.

You could speed up the healing process up a bit, but it comes at a price – you can only do so once for each person. You know that there are other enemies to fight, but the sooner she heals, the sooner you can all go home. On the other hand, it might not be your choice to make, and that could be a problem too. When Ryukusa kissed you – gave you her very first kiss, and saved you from Yomi, if you want to be exact about it – her will became your will, and her purpose became your strength. She might not have meant for those things to happen, but they did, and you wouldn't have it any other way.
>>
>>43672155
Your master has made your life amazingly warm, filled with love, laughter, and terror. The terror comes from seeing the people your master loves, the people who love her put at risk. Even the nearly invincible Akari-chan with her blessing from Nikne Kamuy, has been laid low. Though the princess has helped heal her, which you were both honored by and surprised she chose to do. You can kind of understand the difficulty, since you feel the same way about white stone and white silk. If you could sacrifice yourself for any of them to protect them you would....but you can't. Your master said so, and you can no more disobey Ryukusa than you could try and slay a kami.

But this is Akari-chan....your lover, counterpart, and your master's gook left hand, whom you helped give a child to with the power of your master and Amaterasu-Omikami's gift.

[] Heal your lover so that she'll be stronger for the next battles.
[] Ask permission to give your strength to Akari from Ryukusa.
[] Just remove the stitches and change her bandages for now.

[X] Just remove the stitches and change her bandages for now.
[X] Hold your Akari's hand.

Even though your master and Akari fought a stone dragon, and Akari was injured badly, you can see that the child she caries is safe. It would take killing Akari to harm the child at all, and even then there are things you can do to protect the child. She's hardly more than a pearl herself now, deep inside your lover's body.

You slip your fingers into those of the delicate, powerful jade dragon and she squeezes firmly, making you smile. Even now she's got the strength to shatter the bones of other dragons. “Is aniki okay?' You blink in surprise. She was already told that everyone was fine when she was first brought here; you can only guess that she must have been dreaming.

“Yes. Kiku-san said that she's all right, just being confused about something weird.” Akari relaxes, and looks up at you, trusting you implicitly. “I am going to take the stitches out, and change all your bandages. It's gonna hurt a little though.” Akari nods absently, turning her head as she brings your fingers to rest against her cheek. You feel your ears and cheeks heat up, and you sigh softly. “I'm here. I'm here.”

You say that to remind yourself as much as it is to reassure her. You shouldn't be here. You are though. You're glad of it.
>>
>>43672557
“Go get Kiku-san to take out the stitches. It will be easier for her.” Akari doesn't let go of your hand though, and then your master is there, her ruby talons brushing the dark mane from your lover's gleaming eyes as they open again. “Aniki.”

“Good morning, Akari-chan. How do you feel?” You let Akari tell your master; she's going to be mostly correct.

“Better, aniki. I'd like to get the stitches out. Yui-chan said she was going to, but Kiku-chan can take them out faster.” Your master looks at you, trusting you to tell the truth as well as tell her the dangers involved.

[] Explain that the fire would be faster but could cause problems by overacting Akari's nature.
[] Explain that it would hurt more and be slower if you did it, but there would be no elemental interaction.
[] The danger of either method is minimal – it's Akari, after all.

[X] Explain that it would hurt more and be slower if you did it, but there would be no elemental interaction.

As much as you would like to simply do as Akari-chan asks, even though your master hasn't actually asked you a question, you're compelled to tell her the facts. “Akari-chan's Stone nature might be overacted by Kiku-chan's fire element, aniki. It would be faster and it would perfectly remove the wood, and be less painful though. You have to be careful with this sort of thing because it's using a strong element against a weak element in the presence of an element heavily influenced by the strong element.”

Your master looks somewhat bewildered. “I was under the impression that Fire was strong to Void, not against Wood.”

Shaking your head, you explain. “If it was a fight yeah, but this is medicine. The pancreas is part of the Stone element, but the liver is part of the Wood element, which means Akari's Wood balance and Stone balance are damaged already and we used more Wood to help heal her. So using Fire to remove the Wood we used to heal her would overact her already weakened Stone element instead of acting in the creation cycle. Weak against weak equals strong.” You hope that explains it adequately; you may be pretty simple about a lot of things, but this is something you understand well.
>>
>>43673193
“What if we counteracted the weakness by using your strong element against Wood while I overact her weakened Wood element to recharge it, then have Kiku-chan use her element to strengthen her true nature?” You blink, running through it in your head. Water to overact her weakened Wood while you remove the invasive Wood, Fire to create Stone, instead of overacting it. Even with as strong as Stone is to Water, since this is medicinal rather than combat your master's power should be able to help her.

“Hai, aniki; that would work really really well, but it would hurt a lot, since we'd be throwing lots and lots of energy around inside her along with your power messing with her blood.” Fire+Lightning+Blood manipulation? Yeah, that would hurt a LOT. Akari looks at you and nods her assent. You would do the same. Heal faster vrs. convalesce longer? No contest!

“What about the baby?” Sometimes your master is really dumb for a Water dragonette.

[] Giggle and shake your head at your master.
[] Swear at your master for being dumb.

[X] Giggle and shake your head at your master.
[X] The princess could just pull the wood out but she might not like it.
[+] Hug your master, because he's totally a goof.

Giggling you shake your head. “Even if Akari could be killed, her daughter is tougher than she is, aniki! Amaterasu-Omikami and Nikne Kamuy protect her!” Akari smiles faintly and squeezes your hand nicely. You lean over your lover and pat your master on the head, because you can't reach her for a hug. “Sometimes you're dumber than me ani-OW OW OW OW OW OW!”

You grab your wrist and try and pull it out of Akari's grasp, since she's apparently decided that you're not allowed to even joke about being dumb anymore. You grit your teeth and pull, which get you exactly nowhere with Akari's grip on your hand.

“SORRYSORRYSORRYWON'TSAYITAGAINPROMISEPROMISEPROMISE!!!”

Akari finally lets go of your fingers which are all really bruised now and you blow on them to cool them down, while the sleek black dragon blinks at you, then looks down at the still resting Akari. “You still haven't gotten her that dictionary yet?”

“Nuh uh.” Forgetting your fingers you study your beloved carefully. The stitches are definitely starting to interfere rather than help now; they all need to come out. You c see them trying to take root in Akari's body and bind her organs and flesh. If you wait much more than an hour or so her pearl is going to suffer. “Water, please.” You look at aniki, but you can see from the solid streaks and firm colors of the mask they wear that your master already decided what should be done.
>>
>>43673923
Nonetheless, there is one other alternative you are obligated to mention, mostly because you have to tell your master everything that may make a difference. “Aniki, you could ask Kiki-hime to take all the stitches out herself. She might not like it, but it would be the fastest, most painless way for Akari-chan.” Just not the first Wife. Still, she has been getting better and better.

You replace the wet towel for Akari as your master takes all of a few seconds to consider. “All right. Wait here.” She rises and walks over, returning to where the others are talking quietly. Leaning over you kiss your beloved Akari's cheek softly; she's cooling down finally, which is a good sign. Void and Fire were overwhelming her Water, making her body overheat. The blood-colored eyes look up and she smiles at you, reaching up to cup your cheek. You feel tears spill out of your eyes, and you lower your head so no one else can see except her.

And your master of course. Ryukusa always knows when you're crying.

“Shhh, shhh, shhh....” Akari hushes you softly, her voice barely a whisper. “Everything is all right, zeki-chan,” she whispers and you place your hand over her claws, bruised though your figners may be. “You are all right. I am all right.” It's not a lie, no, but it's hard, not just because she's your lover, but because you can't make her better. Ryukusa is making hard choices because of you, and you know she's done it before, and you hate it.

[] Shut up, darling.

[+] Making aniki choose sucks!

“I hate this. I hate hate HATE hate this. I hate this with the passion of ten burning suns!”

“Er Yin-sensei is the Chinese person, zeki-chan,” your lover reminds you gently.

You sniffle and rub the tears away...and then grab her hand and bite down hard, gripping her hand with your sharp teeth and both of your hands. Even your fangs and tusks barely make more than dimples in her skin, and she smiles, looking at you with those glossy, dried-blood eyes of hers, her mask as blank and plain as ever. You finally give up trying to remind her that she's the boss, and give the tiny bruises where your tusks and fangs were pressed hardest into her skin little licks. “Hard choices suck, but it's better than nothing, huh?

“Hai, hai,” she sighs and starts to sit up.

Immediately you put your hand on her chest and center yourself in the world, and she gasps, unable to move your Ten-Thousand-Ton Form. “You have to stay still, or you'll make it all worse, Akari-chan,” you say firmly. She gives up immediately, unable to budge you.

“Idiot dragon, stay still!” Kiku's commanding voice is high pitched enough that it makes you wince, especially since she was standing right next to you. Sure, she wasn't there a few milliseconds ago, but she's there ~now~. First Wife walks next to your master, speaking softly about being unsure of this being a good idea, and your master is murmuring that he has absolute faith in First Wife. The Death-Fox is mixing up some herbs in plum wine, which is being overseen by the Hunter. “Hime-chan is going to take the stitches and bindings out. Inau-kun is making something to help the pain.”

“Okay.”
>>
>>43674648
The pretty golden dragon looks baffled, and then looks at you. You shrug mildly, as much of an explanation you can possibly give. Just because your lover is a wannabe Zen master doesn't mean you understand her any better than anyone else could about such things.

“Close your eyes and feel everything. Don't try moving it or doing anything to them, just feel them. I'll help you.” Your master wraps her sapphire talons around the first Wife's eyes and concentrates, and you watch the light of your master's eyes wash over your lover's body, highlighting everything that isn't blood or flesh. The hunter hands you the bowl of green-tinted wine, and nods; you gently help Akari drink the aconite-laced wine. “You see it?” your master's voice is soft and gentle.

“I see it,” First Wife says calmly, as your master moves her hand above your lover's chest. You and the priestess pulls the covers back and open the black sleeping robe. The hunter staggers back and the Death-fox hands him a bunch of tissues because aniki is busy at the moment.

You and Kiku lay your hands along Akari's body, chest and abdomen, concentrating on the things you can see and feel: Wood, here, here, here, here, Stone here, here, here, Blood, here, here, here, Fire here, here, Void, nowhere, nowhere, nowhere...
>>
>>43674669
Akari makes a soft noise, a faint grunt, and you hold her down, your Ten-Thousand-Ton Form keeping her exactly in place even though she wants to writhe. The tiny grunt may as well have been a scream to you, and to aniki too, but both of you concentrate on the work at hand. Keeping Akari safe, whole, healthy. The wood slides out of the tiny holes, strips and threads of bark and fiber, and they instantly burn away under the molten gaze of the golden dragon.

Finally it's done and Akari slips into unconsciousness, leaving you shaking like a leaf, and Kiku sighing with relief. “you did it just right, Kiki-hime,” your master says....but her hand is on your head, stroking your hair, petting you. Then, to your shock, First Wife's arms wrap around your shoulders in a warm hug.

[] Relax, relax, it's First Wife, she loves you.
[] Admit it, you're terrified for a second, but it's okay.
[] Look back at her and blink and ask her if she wants to learn real medicine.

Have you noticed how she keeps referring to both Inau and Ryukusa with male pronouns?
>>
>>43675067
I guess she can see the true "self", gender and sex are different.

Trying not to go full SJW here

>[+] I could teach you a lot about medicine, Kiki-hime. Akari even has a nice uniform for it, and no, not that kind aniki.
[+] Be silly for her, it'll make her feel better, since it always does.

Not really sure if this works (I don't have a decent read on Yui), but it would be nice to help Kiki get over her feelings with Medicine and get closer to Yui at the same time.

>Hug back
>Tell her she is great at helping and healing people

No need to be silly, I think.

>43675067

She ususally refer to Ryukusa as "they", though.
>>

People have different definitions of gender and so on. Yui's perspective on the matter would agree with yours, I think.

[X] Relax, relax, it's First Wife, she loves you.
[X] Be silly for her, it'll make her feel better, since it always does.

You know what it feels like but you know it isn't that, so you lean back and crane your head to the side and up, looking at her upside down. Calm, calm heart, calm mind, Void and Water, Stone and Void. She smiles down at you, giddy with the success of her operation and having helped your beautiful jade dragon. The sleek, burnished cherry-wood dragon smiles, shining teeth of amber and eyes as blue as the sky shining with warmth and hope. “You keep doing this so well you're gonna put me out of a job, Hime-chan!” you tell her.

She laughs, high pitched and sweet bubbling laugher as your master strokes your hair, the pride they feel in you making your heart pound with joy and your center feel heavy and deep. “I couldn't ever take your place, Yui-chan, you're one-of-a-kind.”

You manage not to say anything to correct her, because Akari wouldn't like it, and smile brightly. “Yes ma'am,” you agree politely, though you can see in your master's burning eyes that she understands. But they won't tell, they never tell. Kiki-hime kisses you – on the lips no less! – and you blush, your skin hot enough to glow.

Your master shakes her head. “you're going to give me a headache with your neck all twisted around like that....” she claims for the fourth time, not meaning a word of it.

“Enough! You three, come with me, we have a ceremony to get ready for. Let Akari-chan sleep in peace” The imperious golden dragon starts walking away, but your master reaches over, face expressionless, and slowly runs her finger along the soft fur that lines the back of the golden dragon's slender tail. Kiku freezes, fire exploding around her body as her brain short circuits, and your master looks at her innocently, the mane of fiery red swirling in the wash of heat that surrounds the golden dragon.

I was thinking it maybe had to do with how much shen they had, since that's what caused Ryukusa to be able to impregnate girls (or was it jing? I forget)

Either that or she simply takes orders very literally and since every calls Ryukusa 'aniki' and Inau 'Inau-kun' that must mean they're boys and that's the end of it.

Either way, this also sort of explains the "Ryukusa is such a gay" comment from early on.

“B-bakayero dragon!” She darts away as First Wife moves to help you up and the Death-Fox settles down to watch over your beloved jade dragon. The Hunter smiles as you giggle madly into your hand, trying not to make the poor golden dragon feel any worse, and failing to contain any of your laughter as you help Kiki stand you up. You whisper that you'd love to teach her more, if she wants to learn, and she looks down, uncertain....you smile at her, earnest and forthright and honest, and she gives you a small smile, and uncertain smile back...but she nods. Your heart leaps with joy at the opportunity to help her overcome her own pain, and you hug her impulsively – and very, very gently.

Your master smiles at you warmly as she takes your place next to your beloved wife, and her shining ruby talons slide across your horn, giving you a delicious shivery feeling down to your inner core. She mouths the words 'thank you' and then turns her attention to your beloved one....you can't help but feel safe knowing that he will make everything better. Not just for you, but for Akari, and Kiki, and the priestess, and the Hunter, and the Death-fox, and the cloud dragon seer, and the blue dragon, and everyone else.

Except for the people who hurt your family. Ryukusa is going to fucking slaughter those fucking bastard sons of Yomi-damned oni-fucks and down those motherfucking shits in their own kamidamned blood.

Eh, I think it has more to do with gender roles and how they act - considering she also refers to Ryukusa as female a lot (just in the latest update there's '...slowly runs her finger...').

Having to enact that hate, no wonder Ryukusa needs support.

Good ideas, we won't really know unless XS clarifies for us, which she won't. She likes watching us pull shit out our ass
>>
Thank you for reading and playing.

I hope you've enjoyed this rather odd look into Yui's world.

Question answered: Yui is not using 'dragon' as a euphemism. She is literally lookign at dragons and foxes wen she is lookign at her family. The 'masks' are the human facves they posses for normal people, except Yui sees them in the manner of Bunraku masks, painted according to their feelings and thoughts at the moment. She continuously switches genders/nongender for Ryukusa because at any given time, she sees Ryukusa either as male, female, or something indefinable to her in terms of gender role. Things look colorless to her when they are not kami; she literally is colorblind to anything that isn't kami, kami-touched, or very very old.

Or it's because Ryukusa's Mikoto is male (or male-identifying, at least)
>>
>>43675558

Thanks for running!

What does she see when she looks in a mirror, though?

A twisted, ruined joke of an oni that is emaciated and worthless. Yui can't look into mirrors for very long; she tries to ignore that they exist.

Weak Chinese demons flee from mirrors for the same reason.

Any way to help that? Or do we have to go on a mirror removal spree? And require Ryukusa to have someone be her mirror when she changes from now on.
>>
>>43675836
Then clearly, we need to make Yui a personal mirror which consists of only a portrait of her. Possibly Er Yin could help?
>>
>>43675891
Well, she hasn't looked into one since Ryukusa promoted her....

Next session will be either Wedmesday or Thursday.

>>43675836
Working with my idea from >>43675900 , could we make a mirror that isn't 'reflective', but instead transmits what her family thinks of Yui as a general cohesive image?

No. Mirrors reflect spiritual reality to spiritual beings.

Of course, there is one mirror tjat might prove to be an exception.
>>
>>43676578
Why is that reality twisted, though? It seems to not be truth, does the mirror only reflect a shell or something?
>>
>>43676578
I've been running thru DQVI again in my free time. The Mirror of Ra is used like 3~4 times depending if you made Barbara/Ashlynn visible to everyone else right away.
>>
>>43676780
It's not reality that's twisted, it's her upbringing.
>>
>>43676780
>>43676823
It's also important to remember that, to a certain definition, Yui is a failure of an oni. Almost everyone who's interacted with her and knows oni-children has commented on her differences, and how she's almost nothing like an oni, personality wise at least. Obviously, her upbringing didn't help at all, but that's only part of the problem I think.
>>
>>43677214
She probably looks much more amazing now that she's Ryukusa's herald.

Though, that just means she probably thinks she's undeserving of her own reflection
>>
>>43675558
Isn't that quite the SAN check?
>>
>>43677214
So she sees the failure of the oni she is, but not the great person she also is.
No surprise her narrative comes off as self-deprecatory.
>>
>>43678577
Exactly how I understand it.

>>43678495
Probably. That ceremony turned what were words, Ryukusa's words sure, but still just words, into spiritual fact. Before that, the only spiritual change to Yui since the quest began was who her Master was. She was still technically the low-level failure of an oni who had no real job from her master, only simple 'busy work'
