Your name is Takashi Wakui. You are a sixteen-year old, Japanese high school student living in a world where half of humanity possesses Personas—manifestations of inner souls as demons, spirits or deities. In the past, you had been one of the unlucky ordinaries lacking a Persona. Then a game called AETHER was forcibly installed on your smartphone. Initially it appeared to be little more than a piece of nasty spyware, extremely persistent and impossible to remove.

Then it sucked you into to a realm called the Blackened Void, where you fought Shadows and gained your first Persona--Ippon-Datara of the Fool Arcana, the degraded blacksmith demon god. Now you are the Wild Card of the 22nd Century, capable of wielding Personas of each Major Arcana. Turns out AETHER is more than a simple, reality-immersive game; it is an accursed phenomenon superimposing itself over an otherworldly realm, consisting of vicious monsters, decrepit ruins and glamorous treasures. And to make matters worse, you and several others have been condemned as its chosen Players.

For what purpose does the game exist, what mysteries lie within and how will you Players achieve victory?

[4:30 pm, 26-Apr-2129 (TUESDAY)]

The Spring Sports competition has ended. Eight hundred student exit the Silver Town Fitness Center, exhausted yet satisfied. Eriko Ozaki’s voice blares over the intercom, reminding everyone to rest well and return to school tomorrow. The results will be tallied up and the winner will be announced on next Monday’s assembly.

“To tide you all over until then, here are the top Houses in the three sports. ALPHA came first in basketball with 120 points, CALIBAN came first in table tennis with 115 points and last but not least FALCO came first in swimming with 101 points! Congratulations to those Houses and a big round of applause to all the captains, assistants and staff members who helped organize and run everything. Also, huge thanks to everyone who participated. See you all tomorrow!”

“Yes!” Yoshino cries, her eyes containing the type of relieved, drained spark reminiscent of the ones found in megacorporation workers nearing the end of their shift. “We got first place in swimming. But we didn’t do so well in basketball or table tennis. Rinako and Eriko were monsters as usual and I didn’t know that orange-haired girl in the C Group could be that good. Maybe I should keep a closer eye on her. The prize will go to the House with the most points. Do we have enough to claim first place? Probably not. We should be able to nab third, fourth or second if we’re being really optimistic. But according to my calculations…”

“Um, you okay there, senpai?” You ask, staring at Yoshino’s trembling posture. She’s hunched over at a table in the facility canteen, poring over her tablet and a set of hard copy notes. “I…I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Oh! Wakui-san.” Yoshino’s head jerks up, her crimson, thick-framed glasses rattling in place. She quickly adjusts them and gives you an awkward smile. “Y-yeah, I’ll be fine. I’ve only got a few more things to take care of and then I’ll be done for the day.”
>>
You can’t help but glance at the sheets of paper. Numbers and equations are scrawled in neat handwriting. “You’re good at maths, senpai?”

“I like to think I am.” Yoshino replies. “But I’m never that optimistic about my grades.”

“Well, you are our house captain.” High grades are a prerequisite, along charisma, perseverance and integrity. Like you said earlier, Yoshino wouldn’t be captain if she was stupid.

“Yes, that is true.” Yoshino gives you a small smile. “Sorry, I must get back to work. There’s still a lot that needs to get done. Don’t worry about me, Wakui-san. This is normal for me. Have a good night.”

“Alright, you too.” You leave the building. Celeste stands outside, leaning against a metal railing. Her arms are crossed and she’s barely sucking on her lollipop. It's obvious she's in deep thought. You sidle up to her.

“You don’t look pleased.” You comment. “Having second thoughts?”

“Me? Of course not, Takashi-kun. A promise is a promise.” Celeste says. She looks a tad insulted, but smiles nonetheless. “I was just wondering I should take you. There are so many great ice-cream parlors around the city it’s hard to choose. If I don’t pick the right one then I’ve failed as a sweet connoisseur!”

“You don’t have to make it sound so dramatic.” You reply. “Pick any old one.”

Celeste sighs and waggles her finger in front of your face. “You don’t understand, Takashi-kun. This isn’t something we can take casually. Never mind, I think I’ve got it.”

She spins on her heel and jogs towards the edge of the facility grounds. “Follow me!” she cries.

One bus ride later, you find yourself seated at the a cute little café in Shakedown March. It’s small but has a comfortable and homely atmosphere that most big-name restaurants and coffee bars lack. A waitress dressed in a matte black outfit directs your attention to holographic menus and advises you take your time.

“The chocolate sundae looks nice…” Celeste mutters, her fingers flicking across the hologram. “But I haven’t had mint in ages…”

You scan the menu. There’s a quite a variety on display and not all of it is on ice-cream. You remember that Celeste is paying for all of this. So, a little voice at the back of your head whispers, it means you don’t have to hold back…

>Pick the cheap vanilla ice-cream. You shouldn’t spend too much on sweets.
>Pick the moderately priced ice-cream. It's what an average guy like you should choose.
>Pick the most expensive ice-cream available. You will take advantage of this situation. No, you don’t care about Celeste’s wallet.
>Get the ice-cream intended to be shared between couples. Maybe you can save money this way?
>Cakes are better than ice-cream. Get the strawberry shortcake instead.

You eye a parfait on the menu. Cookie and chocolate flavored, with raspberry sauce and cream on top. That sounds nice. It’s admittedly a little pricey but since Celeste has agreed to pay for everything so it doesn’t bother you. It’s a shared dish for two, so that means she’ll be able to save money. Yes, this is fantastic! Nothing could go wrong with this plan. You are a great friend.

You point out the dish to Celeste. Her face falls. All the optimism has vanished from her face.

“Something wrong?”

“You really want this, Takashi-kun?” she questions, in a small voice.

“Uh, yes?”

“Really, really?”

“Yeah.”

“Really, really, really? Truly, honestly, definitely?”

“Celeste, what’s with all the adverbs?”

She slumps down on her side table, pressing her cheek against the glass tabletop. She’s gone limp. It’s as if a million Life Drains had assaulted her body at once. You can practically see a stormy cloud of depression forming above her head. In fact, she looks ready to start crying on the spot. What the heck is going on?

“Uuuu…” Celeste moans. “Takashi-kun…you’re mean. You’re horrible!”

“Do you really hate me that much?” You exclaim.

“No, it’s not you. It’s that…”

“What?”

“The parfait costs so much and I have to pay for it all. I’m going to have to eat nothing but rice and green tea for the rest of the month.” She continues to whine. It sounds like a dying seal. People are beginning to stare. “Please Brahma, have someone be thrown into AETHER. Set a long time limit. That way I can finally make some money…”

“Forget about me, Celeste! You’re the horrible one here!” You shout. “Besides, if you’re that concerned about money, why don’t you stop buying sweets all the time?”

“Whaaaat?” Celeste cries. She leaps up, eyes ablaze. Yep, the energetic, cheerful Celeste Tachibana returned. Except she’s now pissed off. “Takashi-kun, that’s blasphemy! Heresy! If sweets were a religion, you'd be burned at the stake!”

“Yeesh, someone doesn’t have their priorities straight…”

The waitress comes back and accepts your order. The dish is delivered within minutes. It looks exquisite. Despite her previous gloominess, Celeste’s eyes light up at the sight of the snow-white ice cream and the cute little waffle sticking out on top. Drool forms at the corner of her mouth. She grabs her spoon and digs in. This occurs the moment the waitress sets the plates down and bids you a happy meal.

“I better eat as well.” You mumble to yourself. You reach for your spoon.

…wait, there’s only one bowl. And there’s two of you. How is this going to work?

Alright, you can’t share this bowl with Celeste. For one, it’s too small and having both spoons clanging about and brushing each other is join gonna ruin the whole meal. The café hasn’t provided any plates; all that’s in front of you is a napkin and your cutlery. Maybe you could ask for some plates, but the lone waitress is all the way in the corner and it might not be worth the hassle. You wouldn’t count on Celeste to restrain herself, not when there’s a tasty dessert right for the taking. While you’re preoccupied she might scarf everything down! This is supposed to be your reward, not hers! Furthermore, this dish is meant for couples and asking for it to be separated is going to raise some awkward questions…

“Screw it, let’s share it together.” You moan.

“Pardon?” Celeste says through a mouthful of crunchy chocolate mix and waffle.

“The bowl. I can’t be bothered to ask for extra plates.” You respond.

“Aren’t we already doing that?” She asks.

“I haven’t started eating, so no.” You take a bite.

It’s delicious. The way the raspberry sauce mixes with the cool vanilla ice-cream and the chocolate chips is exquisite. A massive grin bursts onto your face. You really can’t help yourself.

“Do you like it?” Celeste grins, a ring of vanilla and sauce around her lips.

“Yeah, it’s good. You did a great job, Celeste.”

“Hee hee!” She sticks her tongue out. “Of course I did, Takashi-kun!”

You eat the ice-cream. This sensation is familiar, flooding old memories to the forefront of your mind. You recall them with a fond smile. Ah, that’s right. Mother did this in the past. On the holidays, she would occasionally take you and Shizuka to fancy restaurants. You would sit, bewildered, as your mother rattled off orders of food in foreign languages. The waiters, whom only your mother recognized, would hurry off in an instant. The waiting would be torturous as you enviously glared at the other patrons of the restaurant. You would squirm in your seat and Shizuka would try and placate you with stories or simple games.

But when it came time to eat, by God was it magnificent.

“It’s delicious, isn’t it?” Your mother would ask.

“Yes, kaa-san!”

Dessert would be the highlight of the evening. Your mother would scoop out part of her own portion into feed you. You were seven or eight back then, before your mind had been dirtied by years of browsing the Internet, and so welcomed the extra bite with open arms (and mouth).

Then Shizuka picked up the habit and tried feeding you at home. Thought it was cute. At first you accepted it, but it became embarrassing over time. Especially when she brought her friends over. You will never forget the chortles from Daisuke and the rest of the squad. To make matters worse, Shizuka had been half-drunk at the time…

You politely and firmly asked her to stop at the age of thirteen. To her credit, she complied, but not without falling into a minordepression for three whole days.

Eating with Celeste in this quiet little cafe has almost the same atmosphere. Heh, you can't say you dislike it. Quite the contrary.

You are glad you won the bet. Though the outcome would probably be same if you lost.

But it’s not like you would try and feed Celeste. Hahaha, no way. That would be simply ridiculous. It’s not like you’re intimate with her as the rest of your family—

What are you doing.

Why is your hand reaching for your spoon? Why is it scooping up a nice dollop of ice-cream? Celeste is chewing on one of the raspberries. She hasn’t noticed you yet. You try to yell at her to run, but it’s no use. Some otherworldly force has grabbed hold of your body. constricting your limbs. A cold feeling runs down your back. Whatever it is, it's bending your actions to its will, like a malevolent puppeteer.

Is this another one of AETHER’s machinations?

Is…is it the work of an enemy Persona?

Your right arm moves forward. Sweat is trickling down your face. The spoon is getting closer and closer to Celeste’s mouth. She’s beginning to look up!

Maybe, just maybe someone out there will grant you mercy. A savior might appear and release you from your torment. Heck, you'd even accept Kaede Kurusu, if she were alive.

You prayed for safety...

You sense it.

The spoon is centimetres away from touching Celeste’s lips. By some ungodly miracle, you haven’t dropped it or poked it into Celeste’s eye. Your throat has turned to ash. Teeth rattle along your gums. Your fingers tremble and shake like a leaf caught in a typhoon. The ice-cream is ready to melt.

It’s do or die.

Just another quick lunge, and the ice-cream will be shoved into Celeste’s mouth. You will gain release. You will have successfully fed the Magician called Celeste Tachibana—

“Takashi-kun, what are you doing?”

You blink and look upwards. The spoon almost quivers and falls, but you manage to stop it anyway. Celeste has tilted her head backwards, a look of total confusion on her pretty features. She shuffles backwards a little, out of range, and stares into you.

Silence.

You feel your stupidity running down your back...

“Uh…um…” You stammer.

“Why is your spoon there?” Celeste slowly asks, pointing to the utensil in question. “What were you trying to do?”

“That’s…uh…I was…”

The presence has vanished. It is as you are a puppet whose strings has been cut. Now what the hell are you supposed to do?”

“Look Celeste, I can explain…”

“Could it be…no, that’s silly. Takashi-kun isn't that type of person and neither am I. The only other explanation is that…”

“Celeste?”

“Wait, Takashi-kun. Not another word.” Celeste raises a hand and stops your words in their tracks. “This is something I have to figure out for myself."

"The hell?"

"Don’t worry, it won’t be long.”

Your heart sinks, like a thousand lead weights dropping into the ocean.

That’s it. Your friendship is over. Celeste is going to think you a total freak and never want to speak to you again. Rumors will circulate around the academy and you’ll find yourself walking down the path of the exiled. It’s been a good run, nee-san, but now it’s time to resume the rest of your days as a loner sitting in his room playing video games.

You can hear the cogs spinning around in Celetste’s head. Her eyes are closed and slanted. She’s in deep thought.

Her Decent INTELLIGENCE is being put to use.

Tick tock.

Tick tock tick tock.

Seconds fall by.

“I get it!” Celeste yells, triumphant. She clenches her fists in the air, full of energy. “I understand what you were trying to do, Takashi-kun!”

“What?” You ask, in a voice similar to convicts standing on the execution platform. Dull, flat and lifeless.

“You were being considerate.” She puffs up with pride, clearly convinced that her answer is the correct one. “You heard about the pitiful state of my budget and, even though you beat me, you decided to share some of your ice-cream with me. That's really kind of you and I appreciate the thought! Since you gave me your blessings, I won’t hold back!”

Before you can react, Celeste has lunged forward and devoured the dollop of ice-cream. The spoon is now empty, not a single sliver of food left on it. She has licked it clean! Her skills are out of this world!

“Delicious!” she exclaims.

You stare at her, jaw hanging loose.

“Don’t just sit there, Takashi-kun!” She offers. She takes another mouthful with her own spoon, making sure to carefully mix the berries and the chocolate topping together. “Eat!”

“…”

“Takashi-kun?”

Your head slams down on the table. The cutlery and silverware jump. It hurts and will probably give you a concussion. You don’t care. Forget lifeless. Your mood has somehow gone beyond that.

“Are you alright?” Celeste asks.

“Celeste.” You mutter. “I don’t understand it myself, but I feel like you’ve heavily insulted me.”

Putting that aside, you spend a pleasant afternoon eating ice-cream and chatting with Celeste. The topic of the Spring Sports competition is brought up.

“Yeah…about that.” Celeste trails off. “I did great in table tennis! I won most of my matches, even if I was only in the C Group. That BOXER team gave me trouble though…”

“Then how did you get roped into swimming?”

“The House asked me to fill in a spot and I accepted. I wanted to help out as much as possible. The 50m freestyle sounded like a decent challenge.” Her smile falters. “But I lost to you.”

“You might’ve been too tired from your previous matches.” You suggest.

“Mmmm…that’s not an excuse.” Celeste pouts and looks away, folding her arms. “Next time, I’ll definitely beat you! You can count on it!”

“In swimming?”

“No, it’ll be something else, like exams or soccer. But I’ll win, and then you’ll be the one buying me ice-cream!” Her voice is full of determination and ambition, but there’s a cheerful and cheeky smile on her lips. “Just you wait.”

“If you say so…”

“Of course I say so!” Celeste grins. “Hee hee hee!”

You return home. As you sit on the bullet train, between the rolls of a flab from a man in a business suit and a sweaty woman in a gym suit, you realize that you had just spent an afternoon with one of the few girls you know.

Right, studying. Exams will begin in eleven days, the moment Golden Week ends. You need to be prepared so that you don’t look like an absolute fool in front of your classmates. Not a literal one, though. In that case, you’d be more worried about the Japanese secret service.

Mathematics, Japanese, English, mythology, history, physics and politics/economics. These seven subjects will be examined. They have been the bane of your nights, pressuring you with tricky problems and long stretchiness of textbook reading. It’s like a tidal wave, except made out of e-books and corrections instead of dihydrogen oxide.

But you steel yourself not to give in. Nothing is impossible. You’ve downloaded practice exams and they’re all manageable. Class work and miscellaneous assignments have gone well, too.

You take out first piece of homework on your list.

“Translate all twenty of these sentences from Japanese into English. These are of MEDIUM-HARD difficulty. Good luck!”

Yeah you’re pretty much boned…

You grab your pen. It’s full of ink. Nothing can stop you now. You take a deep breath, exhaling puffs of air from your nostrils.

You begin to write.

‘The android girl stood at the grave of her master. A tear rolled down her cheek and splashed onto the dry soil.’

Sweat trickles down the side of your neck.

‘The young sage took out a book and began to read. The children gathered around her, enraptured by her words.’

It’s getting very hot in here.

‘The student council president yawned and closed her book. Work had been exhausting, as always. She could tolerate it.’

The pen feels heavy.

But now is not the time to let go.

‘The child fell sick and her parents locked her away in the hospital. She had nobody to play with. Her existence was a lonely one.’

You’ve almost done it.

‘The angel flew upwards, cradling the body of the boy. The minions of Hell tried in vain to drag her down, but her light was too strong. She soon disappeared from sight, leaving only a single, shining feather behind. The Devil roared and cursed his weakness.’

You have finished. You slump in your seat, riding high off your victory. Now to check your answers.

Seventeen out of twenty are correct.

>Your INTELLIGENCE has increased by 3 points! Congratulations! Your INTELLIGENCE is now Decent!

So, where do we go from here? We've got Willpower at 45 now, only 20 points to the next level, so we could probably get that done in a week or so if we practice Persona Augmentation in the evenings and go to Martial Arts Club. Or we could try to get Charisma up higher, since it's our current lowest stat. Alternatively, we could go for an even distribution instead of grinding. We could even use the time to pursue Social Links, instead, we've still got most of the Major Arcana locked. So what are people thinking?

You now have an average chance of doing well at your midterm exams, as opposed to terrible!

What’s with that look of disappointment? Did you really think that reaching Decent INTELLIGENCE was the end? That you could hit a milestone and then spend the next eleven days relaxing?

That is not how the real world works.

Have you forgotten the virtues of perseverance and persistence? If you don’t study often, you’ll forget. When the exam arrives, where will you be? You’ll make simple mistakes, you’ll forget important details and the result won’t be as sweet as you imagined.

Well, you probably are already aware of this. The Fool named Takashi Wakui isn't, well, foolish. Rumi Wakui and Shizuka Wakui know he's a clever and well-behaved boy. Even Japanese child living in the twenty-second century understands how important studying is. Good marks lead to offers, offers lead to renowned high schools and universities and those lead to stable and well-paid jobs. What else could a child want?

In today’s economy, you cannot be prepared enough.

Maybe if you studied consistently, you’d be able to ace the exams. There’s still eleven days left, three of which are the Golden Week holidays. This is what the other students are undoubtedly thinking.

AFTER ALL, IT’S NOT LIKE THEY’LL BE FORCED TO SUDDENLY RUSH OFF TO TAKE CARE OF SOMETHING. SOMETHING THAT IS OF GREATER IMPORTANCE THAN ANYTHING ELSE IN THEIR LIVES AND WOULD DISTRACT THEM FROM THE REST OF THEIR STUDIES. IT’S NOT AS IF THEY’LL BE SHOULDERING THE BURDEN OF THE VOID’S CHOSEN OR ANYTHING.

Give it your best shot, Takashi-kun!

It’s been a while since you last came to the Velvet Room. The place hasn’t changed much. The hole in the wall stands out like a sore thumb, it’s devoid of light like the void of empty space and dust clogs your nostrils. The two figures sit in their chairs, reading leather-bound books. Whatever skin made said leather, it wasn’t artificial.

At your footsteps, they shut their books and place on them the table with unnerving parallelism. The boy opens his tooty mouth and speaks.

“Welcome back, kid. You’ve been a busy one, haven’t you? My dear little sister and I have been enjoying our time here very much, thanks for asking. Unfortunately, the two of us are engrossed in our respective novels so we’d prefer it if you didn’t linger around here for too long. It’s nothing personal, mind. Your mere presence is awfully distracting. Take that with no offense, if you will.”

“Although, there’s something we could discuss.” The girl smirks. “Nii-san, how does the Weakest One’s Hermit bond sound?”

“Good idea, my dear little sister.” The boy claps his hands, as if he expected her to bring up the topic at that very moment. It is almost as if they rehearsed. “Fumika Shibuya, was it?”

“Yes, nii-san! The Weakest One and her met at the library, where they bonded by nodding their heads at each other. Rank 1, no Persona yet gained. So far, she’s been giving him the cold shoulder. Perhaps she’s had second thoughts and decided she they doesn’t like him? Hee hee, she cannot be blamed, then!”

“That is true, my dear little sister. After the initial formation, our guest here hasn’t bonded with her at all. The last time he tried, Fumika Shibuya simply brushed him off. For supposed acquaintances, they aren’t very close at all. It could be possible that the bond is a fake one. A forgery, a sham, an imitation. Could it be that the Weakest One mistook fantasy for reality?”

“It would be dreadfully amusing if this were the case,” The boy continues, shrugging his shoulders and grinning. “But the bond is true.It wouldn’t have formed otherwise. Then, does the blame lie on Fumika Shibuya? She does seem like the type of woman to shrink away from others.”

“Quite similar to the Great Seal’s High Priestess, in more ways than one.” The girl comments. “There are subtle differences. They will make for an entertaining show, oh yes they will!”

“Perhaps, deep within her heart, Fumika Shibuya is so starved for human affection that even the slightest contact caused for a bond to form? Or is she the type of person to be frigid inside while overflowing with warmth inside? Perhaps a combination of both. Ha ha ha…well, it’s up to the kid here to discover the truth.”

Your head pounds. The Velvet Room is beginning to fade.

“Oh, Weakest One! Before you leave, take this!”

The girl takes a tarot card from her pocket and flings it towards you. You catch it.

NAME: Koppa Tengu
RANK: E+
STATS: STR E, MAG E+, END E, AGL D-, LCK B+, DEV A-
AFFINITIES: Nulls wind, weak to electricity
SKILLS: Garu, Magaru, Sukukaja, Shibaboo
-A type of tengu. Their spiritual power is weaker than other tengu, so they are much smaller. They are said to be the reincarnations of long-lived wolves.
-Agile Persona with access to wind spells. Sukujaka raises agility/evasion while Shibaboo binds enemies.

“Alright, you can go!” The girl chirps. She shoves the air and you are sent tumbling into the darkness. “Farewell until next time, Weakest One!”
>>
>>43699741
Okay, as annoying as dealing with the squatters is, I am glad for the Hermit Persona. Now we just need to get Persona Augmentation learned to the point we can use it reliably and we'll have a nice trump card we can use in any duels. Most sensory-type Personas can just sense Arcana and elemental affinities, not the actual Persona itself. So we could swap to Koppa Tengu without anyone knowing that we've done so. Granted, changing elemental affinities suddenly would still tip people off that something weird was going on, but not that it was Wild Card stuff.

[<Azure Scholar> opened a blogpost on 6:41 pm, 3-Mar-2131]

<Azure Scholar> I have been given the task of cataloging our endeavors and distributing for future generations to use. So far I have covered Takashi, Celeste’s and Akikazu’s entries into the Blackened Void. Now, it is my turn.
<Azure Scholar> We, the Void’s Chosen, once contemplated on recording everything in an autobiographical format. However, that would require accounts from the myriad of sources we gathered on our journey, some of which are either missing or dead. Furthermore, what some of the team wrote is...biased, to say the least.
<Azure Scholar> In the end, we decided to use chat logs, out of respect for the millions of characters we typed during our adventure traversing the Blackened Void. Also, it is more convenient.
<Azure Scholar> It is said that all chat logs typed by Players will [DATA EXPUNGED] and reach others in their own AETHER sessions. Even though we [DATA EXPUNGED] , these notes may assist a few unlucky souls in claiming the Ultimate Reward.
<Azure Scholar> The chances are of doing so are unlikely, as what I am about to write have little to do with the game itself.
<Azure Scholar> Oh well.
<Azure Scholar> I do not know why I just spent the past minutes typing the above. It’s nothing more than useless filler. I guess I’m bored, then. That will not do. Once I finish this, I will attempt to restart some past failed projects.
<Azure Scholar> Oops. There I go again.

<Azure Scholar> Date: 8:30 pm, 26-Apr-2129 (TUESDAY).
<Azure Scholar> I was in Akumachi City at the time. Aged sixteen, attending Akumachi-Kirijo like Takashi, Celeste, Akikazu and [DATA EXPUNGED]
<Azure Scholar> For most children, a usual night involves studying, eating dinner with the family or relaxing on the Internet. But I was not an ordinary girl.
<Azure Scholar> For me, I spent that night downing four steaming cups of espresso and slipping on the most frayed and battered clothes in my closet. This habit has persisted. I do not understand Celeste’s obsession with fashion, after all this time.
<Azure Scholar> I took the bullet train towards the Fallen Downtown. It’s mostly been cleaned up, but in the year 2129 it was a disaster. The moniker is obvious. Back then, it had been a maze of decrepit buildings, garbage-laded alleyways and crumbling roads. It was a place where the forgotten and the discarded end up. Does that remind you of anything?
<Azure Scholar> Where there is light there is also shadow. The Fallen Downtown was a home for many poor non-awakened. They lacked the magical talent that would have otherwise granted them a better life.
<Azure Scholar> With a staggering level of criminal activity, diminished law enforcement present and a penchant for gang wars every month or so, it’s no wonder the city tried so desperately to cover it up. Perhaps that was part of the problem.
<Azure Scholar> In summary, the Fallen Downtown was a place where any sane person would not dare go. I was not a sane girl back then, so it fitted.

>>
>>43699971
Well, that is suppose to be a Creation/craftsman god right? For all we know though, we could get a third evolution ala Messiah. Then again, the last wild card had the Demiurge, so we'd either get something pretty big, or pretty small because twins.

Actually, I hope the third tier IS the twins so we can command those little punks.
>>
>>43700131
I'm kind of hoping that we get the god Aether, for irony purposes.
>>

>>
<Azure Scholar> Readers would be forgiven for wondering why a girl from such a prestigious academy would be lurking in the dirtiest and nastiest districts of the city. Many of the local residents must have thought the same.
<Azure Scholar> I was there on a mission. One that I would never reveal to my parents. As for friends…I didn’t really have any back then. Oh well.
<Azure Scholar> It was a stroke of fortune to meet Takashi, but now I'm getting off topic.
<Azure Scholar> Ever since magic burst free into the world and Kaede Kurusu took the Imperial Empire of Japan by storm, a certain underclass of criminals have slowly been gaining prominence and influence. They are untraceable yet restrained, invaluable yet disposable. Corporations, criminal organizations and even wealthy citizens use them to combat each other, far away from the public eyes. Soldiers, mechanics, hackers, mages and assassins…they are all mercenaries running in the shadows.
<Azure Scholar> I used to be one of them.
<Azure Scholar> It was all the more impressive considering my age.
<Azure Scholar> My destination in the Fallen Downtown was an abandoned warehouse in neutral territory. I still remember it. An empty husk of a building, as if it were the bones of an animal resting in pitiful entrenches of a forgotten wasteland. It was the cannibalized remnants of a construction factory from decades ago. Any useful components had long since been stripped out and sold on the black market.
<Azure Scholar> I pushed open the doors and entered inside. There, I met my teammates for the next few hours.
<Azure Scholar> I will do them service of recording their street names and basic profiles. The past me would not have bothered, but I feel they deserve to be remembered, no matter how minuscule it is.

That or big name god. Would be a change from punching god to punching WITH god.

<Azure Scholar> SeePlusPlus, Emperor Arcana. A man without magic; he compensated with his attack drones and heavily augmented body. Highly regarded on the Nocturne City BBS, but had a nasty temper at the worst of times.
<Azure Scholar> Everest the Chinese, Fortune Arcana. The aged combat medic with a grizzled white beard, he specialized in fast healing spells and shotguns. Skeptical and cynical of everything according to his reputation, but very intelligent and quick-thinking.
<Azure Scholar> Poppet, Temperance Arcana. The offensive mage of the group. She mainly worked with buffing, wind and electrical spells.
<Azure Scholar> They were good men.
<Azure Scholar> It’s a shame they are all dead.
<Azure Scholar> The mission was simple. Word on the street was that Nanjo were about to reveal a new, revolutionary biomod for blood cells or whatever. Day one revenue estimates added to millions of Macca. Their major rivals obviously did not appreciate this and thus hired SeePlusPlus’s team to put a stop to it.
<Azure Scholar> We were to break into the lab, steal the blueprints and samples and then leave. Optional objectives included theft of paydata and corporate sabotage.
<Azure Scholar> For any normal citizen of the Imperial Empire of Japan, this would seem like an utterly impossible task to accomplish. But for us, it was just another night in the shadows.
>>
>>43700195
It might be him. Hell our wild card powers were given with a magatsuhi!
>>
Hermit a 2nd best.
>>
>>43700195
I thought he was running the answers terminal in the forgotten abyss.
>>
<Azure Scholar> We took the late night train towards Spark Hill.
<Azure Scholar> The rest of the team sat around, polishing their weaponry and eating their dinner. I did not join in. I was a freelancer and not part of the group. Once the mission was over, I would go my separate ways. For what reason should I have socialized with them?
<Azure Scholar> I regret that now. They weren’t bad people. They did not deserve to die the way they did.
<Azure Scholar> I had more pressing matters to attend to, anyway.
<Azure Scholar> A program had mysteriously wormed its way onto my laptop. AETHER, an open-world survival RPG game. Version 2.0 Beta.
<Azure Scholar> No matter what I did, I could not be rid of it. Anti-viruses, OS reinstallation, switching hard-drive…it didn’t matter at all. It seems so obvious in retrospect, but at the time my rage could not be comprehended within mere words.
<Azure Scholar> Once I calmed down, AETHER fascinated me. The source code could not be extracted and it somehow managed to jump between two machines without any direct intervention. No-one had heard of it online, not even the administrators of the Nocturne City BBS. It was a literal ghost in the machine.
<Azure Scholar> Though I despised it for its closed-source nature. I still do.
>>
>>43700265
He might be doing both.
>>
>>43700309
>Azure Scholar> Though I despised it for its closed-source nature. I still do.
Stallman is proud.
>>
>>43700309
Yeah, we really should put out an add or something for "So your computer's caught AETHER". Maybe the future Japanese equivalent of Reddit?
>>
>>43700324
When we were talking at the computer terminal, he did say this,
>If I had control over the Blackened Void you could call me the Game Master.
>I do not, however, so you may call me an Observer.
>>
>>43700309
>closed-source
Bitch it's literally magic
>>
<Azure Scholar> We exited the train and drove towards the target location in an armored van. We dived in and out of the shadows until we reached the back door. I hacked it open. Then I sent a virus into the local network and gained administrator access. I diverted the guards with a series of false alarms and compromised the security system. From there, the mission should have been smooth sailing.
<Azure Scholar> ‘Should’ is the key word. Things went wrong. They often do on runs, but this one went FUBAR quicker than any other.
<Azure Scholar> We descended into the base via elevators. Poppet took out the two guards lurking in front of the laboratory entrance. We got past its quadruple factor authentication (password, keycard, palm image and retina scan, thankfully there was no heartbeat detection) and entered.
<Azure Scholar> Poppet scrambled around looking for the sample. SeePlusPlus downloaded the blueprints. Everest and the drone watched outside for intruders. I was given the task of monitoring the security system.
<Azure Scholar> Then AETHER opened by itself. The scrambled message, common to all Players pre-entry, was no in clear, normal text. This is what it said.

>[IMMUTABLE] On 27-Apr-2129 at 11:00 pm, a group of mercenaries will break into a laboratory in Spark Hill. They will attempt to steal the blueprints of a prototype attack drone. The laboratory guards will catch them in the act and a firefight will ensue. The mercenaries will initially hold off the guards, but neurotoxin emitted from the walls and ceiling will kill them all. Following this incident—the fourth player, Fumika Shibuya—will join the game.

<Azure Scholar> Oh wait, I wrote the date down incorrectly before. Excuse me while I go and correct it.
>>
>>43700408
didn't stop Naoya
>>
>>43700416
You also wrote down that you were stealing blood mod blueprints, not attack drone blueprints. Was that just what you thought you were stealing?
>>
>>43700416
><Azure Scholar> Oh wait, I wrote the date down incorrectly before. Excuse me while I go and correct it.
How soon is that?
>>
>>43700450
maybe the blood mod blueprints allow you to turn your blood into attack drones?

<Azure Scholar> Why did the message have my own name? Why was it predicting the future? It distracted me. And in this moment, the administrators over the network took the opportunity to lock me out of the network and regain control over the system.
<Azure Scholar> They then sent guards down to the basement to take us out.
<Azure Scholar> We soon had a fight on our hands.
<Azure Scholar> At first, we held the guards off well enough. SeePlusPlus’s drone came equipped with a grenade launcher and laser emitter. Everest’s shotgun was nothing to laugh at. Poppet hurled waves of lightning and wind at them.
<Azure Scholar> I, on the other hand, fired at them with my laser pistol.
<Azure Scholar> This continued for several minutes. The guards were determined to make our mission a failure. We were equally as determined to make it a success. Then I noticed something strange.
<Azure Scholar> Why were all the guards wearing advanced filtration systems?
<Azure Scholar> Before my teammates could reply, the predicted neurotoxin began flowing out of vents in the walls.
>>
>>43700416
><Azure Scholar> Oh wait, I wrote the date down incorrectly before. Excuse me while I go and correct it.
Oh shit.

After hermit girl the next target will be the captain!
>>
>>43700479
No, she's just correcting it from being the day of the house competition to the day after. It's fine. Makes it a bit easier for us, gives us a day to relax and chill out before we have to go into the Void. Though it would have been even better if she did this on the 28th. Then by the time we got the notice it would be the holiday and we could take the whole day to go Void-exploring.
>>
>>43700476
I hope we save you soon, potentially best girl.
>>
>>43700534
nah. She'll be the one of the major bosses we fight, as the token "supposed to be ally" boss. After we're forced to beat her the whole school will know and the Fool jig will be up.
>>
>>43700568
>Fool jig will be up.
We'd never be able to leave Aether.
>>
<Azure Scholar> It is not pleasant, having your lungs filled with some of the deadliest poisons conceived by mankind.
<Azure Scholar> Seeing the team combat medic be turned into thick red paste good by a hail of minigun bulelts isn’t great either. Especially when he’s the only person with Posumudi up his sleeve
<Azure Scholar> In a few seconds, the tables had turned on us. We were nothing more than dying rats scrambling around the cold floors of the laboratory. Poppet didn’t take it well. She tried to make a final last stand. She charged up a Maziodyne at the guards.
<Azure Scholar> A block of ice froze her and was smashed to bits. Her frozen chunks scattered across the ground. She didn’t last two seconds.
<Azure Scholar> I didn’t know about SeePlusPLus, but his body eventually turned up on the media. The Nocturne City BBS had a funeral for him, as best as an Internet forum on the deep web could manage. It was strangely touching. I didn’t ‘go’, of course.
<Azure Scholar> So there I was, slumped against the wall, feeling the cold hand of death coming to grasp at my throat.
<Azure Scholar> I didn’t resist. I had chosen this life of my own will. I was not above the consequences. All mercenaries sign their death warrants the moment they begin running in the shadows. My time had simply come sooner than others.
<Azure Scholar> I wondered what my parents would say. Then I couldn’t bring myself to care.
<Azure Scholar> There was nothing I could do. Or so I thought.
>>
>>43700181
>As for friends…I didn’t really have any back then.
I'll be your friend.
>>
>>43700589
There would be that option. But what would Shizuka say about that?
>>
>>43700638
There would be that obligatory "you couldn't even trust your big sister?" scene once it comes out. At which point we would remind her she's a government agent and would be almost legally required to bring us in.
>>
>>43700638
She'd move in with us. She kills Shadows for a living, she'd love the place.
>>
>>43700638

>>
>>43700661

>She switches sides and beats up her squad. They're all cool with it.

<Azure Scholar> Just as the last breathe of life escaped from my body, the world froze.
<Azure Scholar> Time stopped. My surroundings had become monochrome.
<Azure Scholar> The laboratory guards stood like statues. Their bullets, inches away from piercing my body, hung in the air like frozen crows.
<Azure Scholar> I was confused. Anyone would be.
<Azure Scholar> Then I looked down and saw a pool of shadow forming beneath me. Hands shot out, grabbing my limbs and dragging me under.
<Azure Scholar> You know how it goes. It was just like Takashi, Celeste and Akikazu’s entires.
<Azure Scholar> I realize I had stumbled upon something alien. Something abnormal…and disgustingly enthralling.
<Azure Scholar> As illogical as it was, it was better than dying.
<Azure Scholar> So I resigned myself to my fate. I clutched my laptop tightly and mentally prepared myself for what lay ahead. Doing so was useless, but oh well it’s the thought that counts.
<Azure Scholar> “Hurry up,” I said, outstretching my arms, “I don’t have all day.”
<Azure Scholar> …
<Azure Scholar> Celeste is going to tease me for this, I just know it.
<Azure Scholar> Anyway, that wraps up my entry. Perhaps I’ll catalogue [DATA EXPUNGED]’s entry next or work on the Forlorn Abyss.
<Azure Scholar> …I wonder if this log has already reached other players.
<Azure Scholar> Perhaps, even alternate versions of my team?
<Azure Scholar> It would interesting to receive criticism from myself.
<Azure Scholar> Let’s hope the Takashis don’t get them killed.

[EPISODE 5: ETERNAL]

>[MAX PRIORITY] On 6-May-2129 at 8:00 am, the corpse of Fumika Shibuya will be found in the Grey Ward of Akunachi City. Her mutilated limbs and torso will be strewn around a local scrapyard. Analysis will reveal signs of intense mechanical augmentation, far beyond the limit of what humans can tolerate. Further inspection by the other Players will reveal she has been murdered by the Denizens residing in Sector 3 of the Blackened Void—Area 019. 10 days, 0 hours, 0 minutes and 0 seconds remaining.

FUCKING FINALLY FINISHED. Geez this was a long one. What you guys did with Celeste was unexpected, but fucking amazing.

Next thread in two days! 19th November, 10:30 pm UTC as always! Hope to see you all there!
