>You are a young man named Lloyd from the frozen Northern mountains of Tordo, on the continent of Teege. After a youth spent learning magic, you and your girlfriend spent some time as bandits after your home was destroyed, but have recently taken a chance to escape that life into a legit one... As sellswords, admittedly, but it's better than nothing.

You've been back all of a day now, and already another client has arrived.

You guess that's just timing, and doesn't even necessarily mean you'll be sent out, but...

Eh, you don't particularly feel like checking out who it is. You and Leigh are in a conversation with Lyeim, and if you're put on the job you'll be put on the job whether you were greeting crew or not.

Just having gone off on a tangent, Lyeim continues, "yeah, it's just... Why does that kind of stuff always get brought up for the first time right before it becomes relevant in fiction? I know it's a saying, but it's still a really improbable writing cliche."

Leigh shrugs. "Anyway, what were you saying?"

Lyeim opens his mouth to speak, "I... Don't remember. Lost my train of thought. Sure it was important." He looks at you. "You got any idea, Lloyd?"

Finishing cleaning off the glasses you've been wearing for the entirety of this, you perk up. "Uh, what? Oh, sorry."

Lyeim snaps his fingers. "Right, now I remember! So basically, I bumped into this guy from the Magical Senate in town when-"

Irene approaches. "Er, Lyeim, the clients are your sisters."

"Huh, what? They're back on the Mainland?!"

Irene nods. "They said you should probably hear this."

"Uh, let's finish this talk some other time, guys." With that, Lyeim leaves his seat and follows Irene.

You might as well follow your conversational partner, you and Leigh mutually figure as you get up and follow him.

Marrius is sitting, conversing with two dark-brown-haired women and looking... Significantly more agitated than usual.

"That is... Extremely troubling," he says, trying to keep a grip.

"Colleen, Rema, what's wrong?" Lyeim asks, sounding more alarmed than you've ever heard him. "Why are you two here?"

The more "human" looking of the sisters has glasses, somehow making herself small despite being one of the taller people in the room (only beat out by Leigh and Marrius, if you had to estimate), while the other's visible fangs, tail, the shape of their ears... Pretty much scream "dog person."

The bespectacled one says, "well, as we... Just finished... Just finished summarizing, Tobias had... Learned that someone who's probably one of uncle Vaga's sons, living out in Odo... That was a couple weeks ago, and now we've just heard that the... Relative he was tracking down is the leader of a bandit company called the Groznyi group..."

Irene sounds... Shocked. "Wait, wait, did you say they're called the Groznyi group?!"

"In Odo, yes," the more beastly of the siblings snaps, "need us to repeat anything more obvious?"

"Wait, fill us in... How's this significant?"

Now it's Irene's turn to sound grim. "That's... Just yesterday, when the remains of Alice, Rune, and Tiamo were found..."

Clenching his fist, Marrius finishes, "Lord Phineas and Lady Demeter of Noba had hired us to help clear them out. Them and their escort, Riga, have not been seen since."

The passive one says, "uh... Are Rema and I opening up old wounds, then?"

Rema responds (you can safely assume the other is Colleen now), "hey, they just said they were found yesterday! There's nothing old about it!" She goes silent for a moment before continuing, "so do we get a discount on services for helping revenge?"

Colleen and Lyeim both shoot her rather appalled looks.

"What?"

Colleen speaks next, "we... Wrote mom about this, and she said to just... Keep our cool until she could send dad and Romulus to help-"

"But like hell we're gonna do that! Tobias could be getting murdered right now! So Colleen here mentions our brother could get us in good with some pretty great mercenaries!"

Lyeim reacts, "h-hey, don't put me on the spot like-"

Marrius interrupts, "we'll take the job. When are you ready to leave?"

"When are you ready?" Rema responds.

"Right..." Marrius says, "give us... three hours."

Colleen nods. "Thank you..."

As Lyeim shows them out of the meeting room, Marrius sighs. "This is going to be a... Harrowing task. Irene, who do you think we should send?"

"I can go!" Leigh says, both of you still in the room.

"Leigh?" Marrius says, raising an eyebrow. "I'm sorry, but... I'm not certain you're ready. I mean, you've only completed two jobs so far."

"Remember? You were praising me for helping with the Dracozombies in such a small group! Plus, I've been fighting since long before we joined your company."

Marrius nods. "And I doubt I'll be talking Lyeim out of this one... Naturally, I'll be going as well. Ansi, absolutely."

Irene speaks up, "mind if I come along?"

Marrius is taken aback. "Irene, why so suddenly interested in fieldwork?"

"I know it's been awhile, sir, but... I feel like those girls were my responsibility. I sent them to fight the Groznyi, and now they're dead and some important people are in danger." She breathes in after that long string of words. "Besides, you specifically mentioned that Riga could be in danger. With all due respect, Marrius, you can get... In trouble, when you're worried about her."

Marrius nods reluctantly. "You're right, you're right... But who will take over your duties? We're leaving in three hours!"

"Oh, I know someone who can work short notice!"

You probably have room to interject here.

"Sir, if Leigh is coming, then I would like to as well."

Marrius is silent a moment, staring you down, analyzing your expressions. Subconsciously, you tense up, before quickly adjusting your expression to a more "cool and aloof" one.

"...get that goofy look off your face. It's not intimidating." As you exhale, Marrius finishes, "you can come. Both of you, get ready quickly. Irene, find your guy."

"Right away, sir!" Away Irene sashays to... You think to her research room?

"So, Colleen," Rena says in a teasing manner as you and Leigh pass, "take it you'll be quivering here in safety?"

"Rena, don't tease her," Lyeim objects.

"Hey, I'm just... Making sure," Rena says, her expression softening, "in all seriousness, sis, it's okay if-"

"No," Colleen replies, "I'm... I want to help. I-I can use a lance just fine!"

Leigh shoots a hard-to-read glance (you think... Concern and admiration at the same time?) in their direction.

You ignore the whole ordeal and get packed, as does Leigh. You also discover that she's bought two three-packs of vulnerary, handing one of the packs to you as she keeps the other.

Later, as everyone mentioned earlier is gathered in the headquarters' reception area, you notice a snow-covered stand... Right nearby the usual desk. Behind it is Eyven, speaking to Ansi.

"Eheh, so... Want some snow for the road?"

"Don't bring that up!"

"You sure you don't want any?" He grabs a handful and waves it in front of Ansi. "you could fry it up or something."

Bombastically, Ansi replies, "I said I wasn't interested at all! Snow is for coldhearted apathetic sons of bitches like I used to be!"

Eyven nods. "Hey, no need to get worked up... s'no skin off my back."

Colleen sighs, and Lyeim laughs a tiny bit. After a moment, Rena, nearby, finds something so hilarious about this statement that she begins laughing heartily.

Irene looks around at all of the people who've shown up. She has something around her neck. "Alright, this... Groznyi group, as led by the half-garou, half-vautou Nail... If any of you don't feel confident that you can counter them, say so now." She reveals the pendant that, aside from the string keeping it around her neck, was lost in her flesh until moments ago. "I've been using this exclusively for my research purposes, but I figured that the... Urgency of this situation would be sufficient to actually use it to warp as a group!" She clears her throat. "So... Last chance to back out before we arrive in Odo, yeah."

You don't back down. Why would you?

That being said, something else certainly has your curiosity grabbed.

"Uh... Why's Eyven here, exactly?"

Eyven responds, "filling in for Irene. I wasn't doing anything anyway, so I figured I could volunteer to do nothing."

His gaze doesn't shift towards the snow slowly melting and forming a puddle on the floor by his stand.

Marrius puts his head in his hands. "Just... Clean that up."

Eyven chuckles. "I'll see if I can squeeze it in. I'm gonna be watching this reception area all day, after all."

With that, all of you mentioned (sans Eyven) step outside.

"Alright," Irene says, grabbing onto both you and Marrius, "you need to be in physical contact with someone to warp with them with a Witch's Pendant, so... Form a chain!"

You nod and take Leigh's hand, not really paying attention to how the chain goes besides that.

In a flash, Irene sends you all to the former Dain territory, right outside of a town.

Immediately after, she collapses, panting and letting go of you and Marrius.

"This..." She says, panting, "is Bal... Just a few miles East should be the lair of the Groznyi. It used to be an Outpost of Dain, but... When the empire shrunk, it was abandoned, and... S-so on..."

"You alright, Irene?" You ask, offering a hand.

She nods. "Yeah, just... Give me a minute." She accepts your offer of help. "Thanks for the concern, th-though..." She takes a deep breath as she lets go.

Marrius turns and explains. "It... Takes a bit out of people to use a Witch Pendant with multiple 'carry-ons.' The more people and the further the distance, the better mage you'd better hope you are."

Leigh asks, "has anyone ever died from too much of a load?"

Irene clears her throat, looking back up to snuff now. "Yeah, there are... Some known cases, but trust me. They're way worse than this."

"Why not take multiple trips, then?"

Irene next explains, "even factoring the cooldown time... warping into the barrier to Elza Oasis is... Exhausting. I couldn't do it and then leave with guests without a longer break than we could afford."

You and Leigh are satisfied with your answers, and you decide to look around the town with your 9,800 gold.

Not much of note, besides one vendor offering a Luna tome at an obviously-inflated 6,000 gold. Comparable to Glower, though not nearly as powerful (its strength depends entirely on your own magical essence), it can completely ignore the resistance of its targets.

Is it worth that, though? You can't exactly go back to town to look for it cheaper, and the tome is fairly expensive even without the price gouging, but this is a pretty tough fight you're all anticipating...

"Take your time, young man," the vendor says.

"I'm just gonna... Consult with a magic-using friend of mine about what to do."

With that you leave, finding Irene examining some maps and the like at some sort of cafe, sipping a warm beverage.

"Oh, hey, Lloyd. Something troubling you?" She invites you to sit across from her. "I was just going over some maps. Marrius is training Leigh if you needed him for anything. I swear, he's always gotta be helping someone out..."

"Er, I wasn't looking for him," you say, shaking your head, "I just... Need your input on something."

"So, uh, I'll cut to the chase... Do you have 6,000 gold lying around to be borrowed?"

Irene looks taken aback before smiling in a slightly sultry manner. "Cross paths with creditors from the past? I didn't think you were the type, Lloyd."

"What? Er, no, nothing like that."

Irene sighs. "That's good. Had me worried for a moment."

"Uh huh, yeah... Anyway, it's more that there's this Luna tome being sold here, and it's... At a bit of a markup, but I think using it could be... Beneficial, in the short run. I could totally pay you back later, it's just that right now I've been saving-"

"It's okay," Irene says, "you don't need to waste money or go into debt over that. What kind of dark mage do you think I am?"

"A... Witch?"

Irene giggles. "True, true... But point is," she reaches into a sack and withdraws that same sort of tome in pristine condition, "I could let you borrow this instead."

"Wait... Seriously?"

"It won't be a problem! I mean, I still have Mire, and Gespenst..." She pulls out the latter tome. "This one was passed down from my mentor! But, uh, point is... You can go ahead and borrow that instead, long as you don't break it or anything before you get back."

"So, these... Demeter, Phineas, Riga... What's there to say about them?"

Irene frowns. This is clearly a touchy subject for her, from all you've heard. "Demeter and Phineas are the daughter and son of the leaders of two of the Duchies that make up Noba: Duchess Devon of Fathom and Duchess Phia of Phile. Riga is the daughter of a Dain general named Roderick who grew up in Malva, the third place, and wound up loyally serving Duchess Victoria in time. Lady Demeter's father was a famous mercenary in his prime, and traveled with her mother, so she had a... Bit of a romanticized view of the adventures they had up until shortly before her birth. She roped Lord Phineas into it, and Duchess Victoria sent Riga along with them as a guardian."

"Right, and this... Connection that you mentioned Marrius and Riga having?"

"You know how Marrius' father was dear friends with a man called Derrick?"

You mention that you had heard of this.

"Well, Roderick was Derrick's brother, and after he died in the war Derrick pretty much raised her in his stead."

You thank her for the history lesson and ask for one in magic-science.

"I'd be less subtle if I was." You grin, and she sighs with relief. "That's a yes on there being some, though?"

"Well, everyone has their secrets, Lloyd. They wouldn't really be secret projects if I talked about them in public like this."

"Alright, that's fair." You nod.

"You know," she continues, "that being said, if you really feel like you could dedicate yourself to the art... I wouldn't mind having a lab assistant, so to speak. It wouldn't take time away from your mercenary work, and it could help you with the more practical applications for magic. Only thing is... You'd need to be able to keep a calm head under pressure even out of battle. Magic-science can be a stressful profession, after all!"

You look at the book in question, feeling pretty nice about this.

"Keep it focused on not raising your voice," Marrius chastises. "They still haven't spotted us, and with some... twenty-odd men patrolling, so we've heard, I would rather keep it that way until we're already at an advantage."

"And, uh... Lyeim, watch Ansi's back."

In the time that you wait for a signal that the spiders have been engaged, you and Leigh mostly engage in noteless small talk.

Near you, Colleen and Rema converse.

"Colleen, I just... Wanted to double-check that you were okay with going through with this. I mean, you only fought before against those pirates, and..."

Colleen nods. "If it's... If it's for my family, I'll do it."

Rema musses the taller girl's hair. "I knew you were our sister."

Irene opens up Mire, meaning she likely intends to attack from even more of a range.

Two bandits approach you with rather menacing Steel Axes, only for one to immediately be struck down by said Mire. This... Startles the other one. "Y-you did this, didn't you!" He raises his axe and hurries forward.

You double back a bit, fully intent on stopping the guy before he can bring harm to Irene...

...and then she simply opens up her other tome, Gespenst, wiping him out in a moment before you can even get close.

"Behind you!" She exclaims, causing you to turn around in time to barely dodge a deadly axe swing and retaliate with Luna.

You realize as you finish him off in two strikes of Luna just how silly it was to try to save Irene, and promptly move on.

>A. Stay close to your fellow mage

"Alright, Irene, I'm gonna look for the hostages," you say, making sure she notices and acknowledges your statement.

"Right. I'll keep an eye on you."

And keep an eye on you she does. From afar, Irene supports you with Mire, taking out a couple of bandits who you miss as you explore.

At one point, you see Rema punch someone literally into the ground. Moments later, she, Lyeim, and Colleen pull off something called a... "Triangle attack?"

You're not paying attention.

Anyway, a burly berserker is hit with a bit of Mire, leaving the shack he's guarding quite easily-accessed.

Inside, a fanged, white-haired, short fellow with a tail and a dopey grin on his face, humming a tune behind a cell.

In a relaxed tone, he says, "whoa, you're not a bandit... So all that stuff shouting about spiders going on outside..." He snaps his fingers. "I got it! You're a summoner, here to save Tobias, who is me, from his cousin out there!" He looks around. "The, uh, guy outside should have the key to this cell... Probably. I could break out myself, but... Nail took my special attack, my beaststone."

>A. Ask if he knows where anyone else is kept
>B. Find the key on that big guy
>C. Just blast the cell open
>D. Write-in dialogue
>E. Leave him here until the fighting dies down

"So, you wouldn't happen to know where any other hostages are, would you?"

Tobias looks up, tapping his chin and thinking, before shaking his head. "Not a clue. Now, the key would be appreciate-"

You blast open the door with Flux before returning to Luna.

"...see, this is why you're the guy they hired, Mr. Summoner! Now, let's just see if we can't talk Nail into handing my beaststone back over..."

A howling screech of pain is heard, and you and Tobias run outside to investigate... Along with a few more bandits than the one already seen outside.

A winged, fanged fellow with something around his neck floats just over Marrius and Leigh, bleeding and chugging down an elixir.

"Give up, Nail! You've been disarmed, defeated... You're only prolonging the inevitable, and as much as I loathe every bone in your miserable body... I would rather prevent more senseless death."

"Guess it's time to pull this out... Gods, why did they have to leave now?! We had a good thing going!" He begins to glow, clutching the thing around his neck. "But it doesn't matter now! I'll let you be the first tests of this form!"

"Oh, hey," Tobias says, pointing at it, "that's... Hey, what's he doing with that? He gonna become a wolf?"

The man you assume is Nail... Changes as he rises higher.

Figured we'd need to cliffhanger things again.

Thanks for playing, everyone. As always, our update twitter is @qmgrandflocto, you can ask us shit at http://ask.fm/qmgrandflocto, and I'll be around to chat in-thread for awhile.

I figured that a boss fight starting right around when I usually end threads was a fine and dandy excuse to end it, since the alternative is guaranteeing an anticlimax or an even more tongue-in-cheek cliffhanger.

Hope you enjoy your transforming birdman in the 10-thread mark. Figured that garou-vautou mixes would be able to transform into birds with a Beaststone, since we've discussed certain other half-breed differences.
>>
>>43700826
Yeah that wasn't a twist I was expecting. Looking forward to the fight in the next thread.
>>
>>43700899
Makes me wonder what certain other mixes might be, honestly.

What're the odds that Vaga's philandered his way into an encounter with a manakete, do you think? What would a wolf-dragon be like? What sort of stone would it use?

Genuinely asking now that it's on my mind. I don't have any hybrids planned besides wolf-birds yet.
>>
>>43700940
I've thought about taguel-manakete hybrids before when I wondered what kind of kids Nah and Yarne would have. I just figured that they would have at least a definite preference for one stone. Maybe they can't use the other stone at all. They would have a weird looking human form though.
>>
>>43701049
Odds are it's somewhat imperfect and inconsistent in Genericallyverse, if we're keeping up with how it works with half-garou. Lyeim and Colleen can't transform at all while their other three siblings can.

What about some sort of Chameleon-Ice Dragon-Fire Dragon-Human-Bird-Wolf genetic cocktail, since all of these things exist and are capable of interbreeding in Genericallyverse?
>>
>>43701132
Well at that point all the shapeshifter genes are too diluted to be useful so you're left with an even weirder looking dude that can't use any stones. Poor guy.
>>
>>43701231
Dunno. The concept of Chameleons is tragically unexplored even in canon. Like Xane is probably one of my favorite characters from FE1/3/11/12, but Kaga was the only one who gave a shit about him so no more's been done with that aside from his ripoff in TRS.

I just realized when I finished typing a;; that that you meant like the various transforming guys, not the literal shapeshifting chameleon class. Whoops.
