“Hey.”

You nearly jump out of your skin, whirling to accost the smooth voice at your elbow, cane gripped in both hands like a baseball bat. You slowly settle onto your heels again, trying to smooth your hackles.

Hamp sips at his coffee.

“Bit wound up, eh?”

“... yeah. What do you need, sailor?”

“Oh, Admiral God gave me a jingle and told me to watch yer ass for a day or two till Arizona cools down.”

“Watch my ass?”

“No homo.” Siiip.

You look around warily - you seem to be ascending a road cutting upwards through a steep hill; the rugged slopes rising near vertical on either side. The towering antenna mast that dominates the base's highest point looms overhead. “How'd you find me?” Considering you couldn't have found yourself five minutes ago, it's a good question.

“Well, I was just hitting up the CX for some pogey bait.” He pseudoshrugs to indicate the bag of beef jerky that's somehow glued to his side under one elbow. “Then I was gonna find you. And then you just come... walking right on past!”

You glance back down the hill, towards the distant realm of flat, paved and populated. “And you-”

“Like a sub-mah-reen,” he confirms with a nod before sucking a piece of beef jerky into his mouth. You never saw him draw it, and the bag is still glued to his side.

“... oh.”

“So, where to, Cap?”

I think I remember you asking about why the IJN used double turrets on their Cruisers instead of triple like the US?

I have a couple likely reasons:

First, double guns are narrower, which means the ships can be narrower. This allows them to more easily go thru the water faster.

Second, the more guns you put in a turret, the more complicated the design must be. This is something that many nations reasonably avoided, just look at the US and the quad turrets considered for the North Carolina. (Something France had perfected a decade before.)

On another note, since you said that pic related won't be appearing in this Quest, USS Akron when?

She was sunk in post-war nuclear testing. Japan could have won every naval battle in the war and it still wouldn't have stopped the US from incinerating the Home Islands. Daughterus are indeed superior to waifus. I might be biased, as an Arizonafag though. But even if the option was to go to Ari, I'd pick the destroyers. Sho and Ari, they can keep. Gotta help Willie or she might break. Gotta find Sammy or she might get bored. Gotta find DesDiv6 and give headpats. Headpats for everyone!
Also, Tenryuu might be there, we can arrange a friendly spar for later. Fu fu, ya scared?

Y'know, I don't know which would be worse.

If we got Crunch, we'd get an indestructible, enthusiastic fighting ship that yells a lot and attacks with swords somehow. She's also impulsive, stupid, reckless and jealous; not to mention she has sometimes crippling self-esteem issues, depression, and a bad case of the negativity bias. Oh, and she's terrified of thunderstorms.

On the other hand, with Erika you have a smart girl that could probably solve any mystery with enough patience. She's also an amoral monster that will commit murder out of petty revenge, is an actual rapist, is incredibly obnoxious, and doesn't care about ruining lives in the pursuit of the truth. There will be no secrets safe on the naval base.

My guess is we're fucked either way.

They had the better tech, but they got all the nuggets. 1st & 2nd CarDivs had all the aces, but were stuck with older equipment. They have the doctrine that training was done at the carrier level instead of squadron level to thank for that. That's also why Midway was such a big blow to the IJN air corps.

The US military was a very different beast in WW2 than it is now. Different enough that the Greats that you hear about, Nimitz, Yeager, Patton, all of those guys will not make in today's military.

Um not really, the pilots in the 5th Carrier Division were probably just as experienced as the ones in the 1st and 2nd Divisions. They all flew the same planes, the only difference in equipment were the actual ships themselves.

The biggest blow at Midway wasn't the loss of pilots (which was a lot less than normally believed), but the loss of capable fleet carriers and the maintenance crews able to maintain them.

Its telling that the carrier losses at Midway were not made up one for one until the launch of the Shinano in November 1944.

You elect to observe the destroyer girl's daily training - Hate's own brand of 'instruction' produced notable dividends with Willie's marksmanship, but you've yet to check up on Sammy and her new pack of 'escorts.' You made that personnel assignment shortly after arriving and never had time to follow up on it - it's just been one crisis after another, it seems. You let it fade into the background; one of those tasks you always intended to get around to, but could never find a spare moment for at the right time of day.

Time to correct that.

One of the many advantages of shipgirls are their miniscule size compared to a physical warship; it allows them to conduct fleet and formation training right in the bay, rather than needing to head to open water for practice. Such training evolutions always require a few armed and ready warships, just in case Abyssals try to spoil the party. (Most warships are relying on underway drills and such to bring the influx of new recruits up to speed.) It also means you can stand on the shore with some optics and a headset tuned to their radio frequency and monitor - or direct - the training pretty easily.

A quick check of your smartphone's scheduling app shows that Naka's own Desron 4 is up for exercises today - including the ships you attached to her command; Willie, Fubuki and Sammy. Fubuki's listed on the schedule - you thought she'd be in ordinary longer than that, but apparently she can make way well enough to sail circles in the harbor - but Naka's listed as “TAD,” reflecting her erstwhile assignment as your secretary. Jintsuu's listed on the schedule in her stead, but as you and Hamp dismount your ride and wave a polite goodbye to the motor pool jockey, it is most certainly not Jintsuu's voice you hear echoing over the water. You retrieve the optics and headset from the locked waterproof locker left out for command staff's use, and wince as you flip it on and hear the voice booming full blast through the earphones.
>>
“-AT ME WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT!”

“D-do I have to?” Willie's tremulous voice replies.

“YES! IT MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN BATTLE!”

“... I thought armor and b-b-ig guns did t-that...”

“HA!” You hear someone thumping their chest hard enough to be audible over the mic. “LOOK AT ME!”

You raise the optics to your eyes and look. Standing in the middle of her circling charges, resplendent in traffic-cone yellow, is Sendai - name ship of her class and apparent lunatic. “I WAS OBSOLETE! I WAS POORLY GUNNED AND HAD EVEN WORSE ARMOR!” Her sword flashes from its sheath so quickly you only catch a wink of light as she draws. Willie flinches back at least three seconds too late, had it been an attack. “THE TORPEDO! SWORD OF THE SEAS.” She twirls the blade thrice and sheathes it without looking. “Only effective at suicidally close range - but if you've got the courage to close for battle, NONE CAN OPPOSE YOU! When they see you bleeding and burning, and still closing to make a torpedo attack, they panic! They maneuver hard to dodge your fish, spoiling their aim! They fear, and their fear breaks their formation, and breaking formation disperses their firepower, breaking their battle line and their chances for victory!” She slams a fist into her open palm. “More then equipment, more than tactics, more than leadership - what makes or breaks a battle at the penultimate moment is the FIGHTING SPIRIT of the warriors on the frontline! Nerves of steel, Wilie! Nerves of steel! Now - MEET MY CHARGE!”
>>
Willie has enough time to blink before Sendai's almost atop her, bellowing a terrible battle cry that makes you turn down the headphones so far they auto-mute. You can hear Willie's scream of abject terror carrying across the water as she turns to flee, kicking up a rooster tail of spray as she punches for maximum acceleration. The Sendai class were speedy ships, but Willie's faster still, pushing her boilers to the limit. Sendai comes to a halt within a few hundred yards, lowering her brandished blade and puttering back to the class at ahead full, but Willie's still going strong, heading for the mouth of the bay, not even looking back.

“Guess she needs some work,” Sendai allows. “But we will harden her in the fires of honorable combat!” She looks around, curious. “Now, who's next - YOU!” She levels her blade at her next victim, and you feel a strange, detached emotion as you realize who it is.

“There's another pair of optics in there,” you tell Hamp. “Fish'em out.”

“Eh? What for?”

“You're gonna want to see this one, pal.”

Sammy is standing in her accustomed pose - arms crossed, leaning back slightly, reviewing the world with a grumpy look that broadcasts her willingness to scrap with anyone, anytime, over anything. She examines Sendai from head to toe, her expression growing more dour by the second. “Next what?”

“Show me your mettle!” Sendai declares, bringing her katana up to one shoulder in a high guard. “STAND YOUR GROUND, IF YOU DARE!” Then she charges for her, that same terrible, bone-chilling battle cry ringing through the air.

Sammy watches her come with abject disinterest, finding enough time to snap open a pair of sunglasses and don them with a flourish before Sendai arrives. The Japanese CL skids to a halt before Sammy, drenching the smaller girl in her bow wave. She sucks in a new breath and raises her blade high overhead, a wild and almost feral grin spreading over her face.

“YOU'VE GOT GUTS, TINY TYKE!” she roars with rough glee. “BUT CAN YOU STAND IN THE BATTLE-LINE? DRAW YOUR WEAPON AND ENGAGE!”

Sammy tilts her head.

Sammy lifts her chin slooowly as she sizes up her foe from bottom all the way to top.

Sammy snaps her fingers.

Four corgis suddenly fan out from behind Sammy, seeming to appear out of thin air, the fifth one diving between her legs; floofy hair smoothing back and popping out again as it squeezes past her calves. Over the radio you can't tell if they're growling, or if their triple Allisons are just idling patiently.

“Ask me if I give a shit,” she says, and then the Corgis leap for Sendai like miniature fuzzy raptors swarming for the attack.

This isn't HONRABU FIGHTAN SPIRIT. Balls-out aggression and speed-is-life is how small torpedo ships make a difference against capital ships. Sammy herself is an example of that. It's also how the IJN destroyer and cruiser force wreaked such havoc in the Solomans, and how the USN destroyer flotillas turned the tables on them.

Granted, it doesn't help anything against air power, but that's not what they're practicing.

Breaking the enemy with a charge is all well and good, but what happens if they're drilled enough, or in this case, inhuman enough, to NOT break? Then your lance just shatters on their armour.

Different times, different foes and different forms call for different tactics... Hmmm... Maybe their curriculum has too much in common with the limitations their old hulls had and doesn't account for the fact that, with legs and outfits, they're a SHIT-TON more maneuverable?

Would a destroyer version of the old Cantabrian Circle be possible? Staying agile and mobile, nipping under the guns and out-flanking the enemy, keeping them contained much like the corgis do?

Not if your lance is a spread of torpedoes, mate. That's why it's a credible threat
>>
Ask Sendai what her curriculum is. While the whole fighting spirit will carry the day thing is certainly a deeply flawed idea, destroyers rely on their speed and aggression in order to put their most effective weapons against capital ships into range. After making a decision, showing the flaws in that whole honorable fighting spirit mindset would probably be a good idea. After all, discretion is the better part of valor.

That's like, the exact opposite of a fact. Otherwise Kaga and Hornet could have dodged torpedoes easily

Wait, that would be worst case scenario, wouldn't it?

Also, Japan planning to hit the fuel stockpiles next is a myth, since that would have impaired the Decisive Battle.

It would've taken much longer and been more costly, however. But Japan still would've fallen regardless. They had literally two chances to avoid getting conquered by America: the U.S. giving up for whatever reason, or Russia conquering them first.

If Japan didn't surrender after the atomic bombs and America moved to invade, the Russians had a surprise invasion planned that would've happened before the Western Allied one. Though how successful it would've been shall be forever up in the air.

The US didn't HAVE any more after Nagasaki. It would have taken a couple of YEARS to make 20 fresh bombs and get them out there, during which time the Soviets would have looked at Japan and gone, "Is mine, tovarisch," forcing the US into a land invasion...

Huh, I guess I defeated my own point there...

Agreed, honestly. We're running it down to the wire here. We need to make our intentions and position known. We need to be friends with these shipgirls (not ships, not girls; SHIPGIRLS and we should treat them as such) and learn to be the family we'll need to be to win this war.

And GOD do we need to lay off the sauce. It's comforting, it's relief, but it is going to kill us. Honestly, in Settle's shoes, I'd need a hug more than the bottle, but that's just me.

Hamp lowers his optics slowly, just long enough to give you a blank, questioning Look.

“Yeah, you literally just got off the... boat,” you say lamely. “You don't know about Sammy yet.”

Hamp just stares at you as the sound of Sammy's high-pitched girly laughter carries over the barks and yips of Corgis and Sendai's own squawks of alarm.

“Yeah, you'll... adjust. You'll never get used to it. Nobody does. But you'll adjust.” You rotate the mic on the headset down and turn it on. “Uh, hello guys.”

“Admiral Settle?” Fubuki's hesitant voice replies.

“One and the same.” You wave at them, knowing their primary rangefinders can pick out every pore on your face at this range. “Just came to see how training is going.”

“Well, it's...”

Sendai shouts something shinobi-ish and flings her hand at the ground. There's a muted pop! and then she's simply stumbling out of a small smoke cloud with a growling snarling Corgi attached to each limb. Sammy's still laughing like a lunatic, and she hasn't taken a breath yet.

“It's going,” Fubuki finishes lamely.

Japan not attacking the Pearl Harbor probably would have led to a very different war.

I doubt the Pacific Fleet would be willing to sail way out to the Philippines just to defend it, remember this is WAY before we had all those advance bases like Ulithi and Majuro in the Western Pacific.
>>
>>43715269
>What if they'd never hit Pearl at all?
Then they might have had a semi-realistic chance of pulling off a victory; from the start, the only chance Japan had was to beat the US early in a decisive battle, and negotiate while the US population was still afraid.

Pearl Harbor was a classic example of winning the battle and losing the war. The moment the US was attacked on its own home soil like that, it guaranteed the US would stop at nothing short of unconditional surrender. Japan should have tried to lure the US into attacking first, increasing the reluctance of the US population to support a long, bloody war.

Unfortunately for Japan, even had they gotten the US to the proper point of desperation, they may well have been too crazy and too flushed with victory to consider a peace treaty while they could still get a good one.

“You're okay to train?” you ask. Through your binoculars its clear she's got one arm in a sling.

“I'm fine, Admiral. My guns are banged up and I'm none to fast, but I'm watertight and I can load practice fish, at least.”

“Hmm. So Sendai's teaching you torpedo tactics, eh?”

“In a matter of speaking,” Fubuki allows. The rather harried cruiser girl has managed to shake off her attackers, fuzzy little dogs flying every which way she whips her limbs about with all her strength. They draw up in a circle around her, speeding about in a tight ring of yipping yapping aggression.

“W-what in blazes was THAT!?” Sendai hisses.

Sammy smirks. “I CALL IT MY JAP ATTACK!”

Hamp (who's listening in on his own built-in radio, his Outfit hanging from his back,) lets out a low whistle, but Sendai actually flushes ever so slightly as she sheaths her blade. “W-well, it *is* a powerful technique. I suppose it's worthy of the Imperial Japanese Navy's best.”

Hamp snorts rudely. “Is this clown *serious!?*”

You shrug helplessly and plow on, hoping for the best. “So, Sendai, you're filling in for Jintsuu?”

“My dear sister was indisposed,” Sendai says, trying to sound composed and mostly succeeding. “So I came here to look after her charges.” She plans her hands on her hips and shakes her head at the little gaggle of girls before her. “This... American berserker is remarkable, but the rest of them...” she sighs. “Naka's been teaching them to attack with torpedoes en-masse, from standoff range.”

“... yes, that's how you're supposed to do it, with Long Lances,” you reply. “Exploit standoff range and launch a spread so dense that they can't possibly dodge them.”

“WRONG!” Sendai bellows. “Even the formidable Long Lance is too slow to reliably find its mark at maximum ranges. To win, you must press the attack close, right up to the hilt, and only fire when you see the whites of their eyes!”

“And then you get shot to hell and gone,” you point out.

“Maybe, Admiral, but that's the role destroyers and light cruisers are born to fight! If you commit to the attack with all your spirit, you can overwhelm the foe with your relentless onslaught and pull off victories with lighter losses than anyone might think possible!”

“Do you shout Banzai before you do it?”

Sendai chuffs. “Please, Admiral, that's *Army* thinking.” 'Army' drops out of her mouth like she's ejecting something slimy. “Why do you think so many destroyers are named after weather phenomena? For like the wind and the snow and the rain, we creep in softly, but presage great and powerful forces to follow! We approach under cover of squall or night to deliver our crushing blows with swift and sure power!” She closes her eyes and presses a hand against her modest chest. “Be swift and subtle, and when you strike, fall like a thunderbolt?”

“... is that Sun Tzu?”

“The *chink?!?*” She huffs. “Of course not?”

“Then who?”

“Me~” she says, beaming at you from a few hundred yards away and giving you a big thumbs-up.

CNO fully agreed with BuOrd; it passed the tests when it was designed, why did it need more? Obviously the men who were experiencing problems with the detonator were just too stupid to understand the war-winning weapon. All the failings are user error.

That's the mindset anyone above Lieutenant Commander had about the Mark 14 torpedo had up until mid 1943. Admirals agree with fellow admirals, not mere lieutenants.

“So what's your curriculum look like for today?”

Sendai sighs sadly. “Doing everything I can to make up for lost time. These girls are so timid! HA!” The assorted destroyer girls flinch back as one, including Willie, who's just now creeping back to the line-up from behind. “See?”

“So what's the plan?”

“For starters, one-on-one sparring matches,” Sendai says. “Nothing gets you over the fear of battle damage by taking a few blows to the noggin. The more you bleed in training, the less water you take on in battle!”

You swallow nervously. “I think you got that one backwards-”

“Then!” Sendai declares, sounding excited. “THEN we practice responding to submarine attack!”

“And how do you-”

“TURN AND RAM!” she declares excitedly. “Well, fire your anti-submarine shells, too, but mostly RAMMING! IT ALWAYS WORKS!”

[ ] Like it or not, Sendai's got a good grasp on what makes an effective destroyer captain - the aggressiveness that's mandatory to play to a destroyer or destroyer leader's strengths. You're not thrilled about the old-school IJN training tactics, but Sendai seems willing to take a shot in return, unlike IJN officers - and you bet one of those girls is hiding a mean right hook. [ ] Her heart's in the right place, but this NIGHT BATTLE shit's gonna get someone killed. Ask Hamp to help you out - her strategery needs some adjustment.

>What if they'd never hit Pearl at all?
Leaving Pearl Harbour alone was never a realistic option. The IJN was both obsessed with 'beating' the USN, and convinced that any continued Japanese expansion-campaigns would inevitably bring crushing USN intervention. (To be fair, that second part's probably true.) The IJA was bogged down in China, and they needed the resources from conquering South East Asia to fuel that campaign, but the ONLY way the IJN would sign off on the southern conquests was if they could 'remove the USN from play' - which meant launching the Pearl Harbour strike in the hope of forcing America to accept a negotiated peace.
Fat fucking chance.

>>

You can stop being an idiot any day now.

Improved US torpedoes would have helped, but it still would have taken almost as much time for the US to build up the enormous logistical tail necessary to invade islands thousands of miles away from anything approaching civilization.

The facilities at Ulithi were probably more important to the final stages of the war than every B-29 ever produced.

I'll be honest, my knowledge is from a brief article I read a few years ago. From the looks of little I could find on it right now, we're both right: they had plans on file, but not much ability to pull it off. The landing forces would've been ragtag group assaulting the northern island of Hokkiado and mostly rely on surprise and Japan's focus being more towards the south. It was scheduled two months ahead of Operation Downfall.

But yeah, whether they could pull it off (or if they would even bother) is not very likely. Probably just had a plan on file just for the sake of it. I mean, shit, America had plans for a hypothetical invasion of Canada until a little while after World War II. Militaries tend to prepare for anything, no matter how unlikely.

Discouraging aggression in small torpedo ships runs against the grain on a lot of levels. But I'm not sure how far radar changes the picture. So it seems like getting Hamp to help refine what Sendai is doing is probably the best option. It doesn't encourage timidness (and Naka was probably too cautious for various reasons) but it lets them see how things would work out against radar-directed fire from a heavy cruiser.

Gotta be a combination of the two. Maybe arrange for Hamp to demonstrate by having the destroyers lay down smoke to cover for Sendai, then she tries to make a close torpedo attack on him?

They do need to become more aggressive. Massed long-range torpedo attacks result in massed misses... or sinking over a half-dozen of your own transport ships.

Her tactics, however, do not keep up with the available technology.

>Fleet-in-being

Look it up? Sit right there, motherfucker, I'll look it up.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fleet_in_being

>In naval warfare, a "fleet in being" is a naval force that extends a controlling influence without ever leaving port. Were the fleet to leave port and face the enemy, it might lose in battle and no longer influence the enemy's actions.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_denial

>It is a less ambitious strategy than sea control and can potentially be carried out by asymmetrical warfare or by maintaining a fleet in being that threatens offensive operations without actually conducting them.

Asymmetric warfare was the Japanese focus on night battles and quality torpedoes, which were both enhanced greatly when combined. Their small battleship fleet was the "fleet in being," which is more valuable in port because it cannot be guaranteed victory on the high seas because it's badly outnumbered and/or outgunned. In short it's the strategy employed by the smaller, weaker Navy.

GUESS WHO WASN'T THE SMALLER OR WEAKER NAVY, MOTHERFUCKER?

U wot m8?

And China had already stretched the IJA to the breaking point with no signs of it getting any better. I don't think you quite have the concept of how much of an impossibility that was - they could win battles just fine, sure, but they didn't have remotely near the manpower to hold that territory.

Everything you're saying basically shows you know absolutely nothing about the theatre.

We didn't try to write them off. It's just that MacArthur failed to make A. a good defense plan or B. adequately prepare with the plan he chose.
The distances involved meant very few supplies ever reached ABDA in the two month period between when it was formed and when it was dissolved. The ships in the Asiatic Fleet and the other nations of ABDA were old and rusty. And with the destruction of ABDAIR on the ground on December 8, the Japanese had air superiority anywhere they wanted to throw planes. Unfortunately, there was not a whole lot we could do for our 30,000 men.
It didn't help that all four nations in ABDA had different economic interests, and everyone was at fault with thinking that the Japanese wouldn't come to take the Dutch East Indies and the thousands of tiny islands.

No, the Phillipines were an American holding, and attacking it would have brought America into the war. Also, Japan MIGHT have come out well if they limited their invasion to Korea, but there was no way in hell they were taking all of China. The IJA was stretched thin just holding the coastal cities. They had nowhere near the manpower or logistics to take all of China.

The Long Lance gives the IJN DDs a major advantage. Their disadvantage was shitty AA. Give those DDs cover from American DDs and CAs with multipurpose guns and air cover from Hornet and they can launch their torps under friendly skies. In other words, let the IJN and USN each play to their strengths and together they're a potent combo.

That's... the kind of interpretation I'd expect to see from a Japanese officer of the time. The Empire of Japan wanted to be accepted into the big boys' club, but they just didn't meet the membership requirements. Remember, being seen as a 'great power' required not only military but economic might, and Japan abjectly failed on the latter count. This is a nation that was building A6M fighters at a factory, then transporting them by *ox-cart* to an airfield to fly off to their combat assignments, because they couldn't afford the road-infrastructure *or* the motor-transport to get them there by truck.
There was probably a good dose of Euroentricism or anti-Asiatic racism to their treatment, as well, but the main element was that they wanted to get into the Great Powers club but simply couldn't raise the membership fees.

Yeah, it was for Germany. FDR considered Germany the bigger threat and was transferring more and more of the Pacific Fleet to the Atlantic as a result. They didn't consider Japan enough of a threat to hold the transfers back.

>>43715856
That takes time, dipshit. A oiler that's operating with the Neutrality Patrol up in the North Atlantic will take weeks to transfer back to Pearl Harbor. And in that time, the Philippines falls.

>>
>>43715850
The US made a deliberate strategic choice to focus on the defeat of Germany as the most dangerous of the Axis powers. Supporting the British in the battle of the Atlantic was key to the early phases of the war, and officially the US war plans called for remaining on the defensive in the Pacific.

As it happened, the USN had very little to do with its major capital ships in 1942 and the mooted invasion of France in 1943 was pushed back, so it went on the offensive against Japan anyway.

The Navy which wasn't conducting "Neutrality Patrols" on the other side of the world with half their fleet hoping to get into fights with the Germans?

Like, the US had war-gamed this out for the last two decades. Sortieing the battle line much past Midway was madness at the time, and they knew it.

War Plan Orange called for a year long build up of ships before advancing. It was only because the fleet was already ordered in 1940 and early victories, such as Midway, that the advance started sooner.

>The Pacific Fleet most certainly did not have the oiler capacity to get the battle line to the Philippines in 1941. The battleships were just too much of fuel hogs.
lolwut?

One of the most basic design requirements for US battleships, from 1897 on to the end of the battleship era, was that they have large enough fuel bunkerage to be able to sail all the way from San Francisco to the Philippines and back while burning no more than two-thirds of their maximum fuel supply (leaving one-third of their fuel for use in the expected Big Battle). This is why the USN was slow to adopt steam turbines (recips had better fuel efficiency than the early direct-drive turbines), and why US battleships were always larger than those of just about any other nation.

These aren't modern ships, chief. They can go 15 knots max, and usually go 10-12 to conserve fuel. Early war logistics ships were not fast. And on top of the distance involved, you still have to organize the transfer and take on stores. That takes time in an era where everything's still done by hand. AND this assumes the Atlantic doesn't throw any winter storms in your face to slow you down any further OR that a ship doesn't suffer a breakdown.

By May, Bataan had fallen. The Asiatic Fleet, British Far East Fleet and the other nations in ABDAFLOAT had been decimated (and in the Asiatic Fleet's case, dissolved) and retreated to Australia. By the time Coreggidor fell, the Battle of the Coral Sea was about to start. We had already lost all of our major bases in the Philippines along with Wake Island.
Because of Lend-Lease and the Europe First policy, we also didn't have enough transports or merchant ships to get a force there, much less have the ships ready to escort them through enemy held waters and skies.
>>
>>43715951
>The Navy which wasn't conducting "Neutrality Patrols" on the other side of the world with half their fleet hoping to get into fights with the Germans?

You know that the combined strength of the US Pacific Fleet, with no support what so ever from the Atlantic fleet, is still greater than that of the entire Imperial Japanese Navy at its height, right?
>>
>>43715988
That is kind of what actually happened, so yeah.
>>
>>43715953
True, but they were shooting at much smaller targets (CVEs notwithstanding). Point is, if I can have my IJN DDs hang back with AA cover from the USN (not to mention our faster firing guns if the enemy tries to close) then I'd rather do that than send them charging straight in. Not to mention that if the bad guys decide to close the range, then the USN torps come into play ...
>>
>>43715907

Yes, assuming you leave no capital ships in the Atlantic, not sparing any margin to assist the RN or escort convoys and troop transports to the UK. And in 1941 to early 1942 the USN was not getting any new major capital ships for a number of months, aside from Wasp, and crews would have taken time to work up... so the margin of superiority of the USN in battleships is not overwhelmingly sufficient to guarantee victory in the face of the Kido Butai and aggressive Japanese torpedo attacks at night whittling down the battle line before the Decisive Battle.

It was Carriers or it was Battleships, and you know which one we chose.

They did, kind of. They pretty much moved their troops in and just took rather easily too, since Vichy France was kind of the Axis' little puppet at the time. It was this move that prompted the USA and the European powers to stamp down the oil embargo, since they considered it a clear violation of international law.
>>

That was never in the cards. Remember that the Philippines were fairly well defended - Fort Drum alone was an expensive piece of work, to say nothing of the fortifications around Corrigedor, and the army forces positioned there would've held up the Japanese for quite a while if MacArthur wasn't a fucking moron. This is entirely aside from what >>43715982 pointed out; I'd really like to see Mr. Historian here provide a cite or a source regarding fleet oilers capable of UNREP, how many we had, etc. The battleships could pretty much fend for themselves; the destroyers were big fuel hogs and you always wanted plenty of them along for various escort and screening duties.

But the thing is that warships - ESPECIALLY battleships - are power projection assets. That's the whole fucking point of them - to project power. Suggesting we weren't willing or planning to project power with them is utterly fucking high.

Guys, guys!

Before Pearl Harbor the USN was expecting Japan to attack the Philippines. The initial Japanese plans also involved an expected fight with the USN near the Philippines, but Yamamoto went ahead with the risky attack on Pearl. The US never intended to abandon the Philippines, that's just stupid. If they did, they would have pulled out all their troops beforehand.
>>
>>43716099
They did? I recall that they were starting to update their tanks with the longer 37mm but not enough time, and it was too late.

>>
>>43716041
Indeed, and I forgot to mention that the US was one of the first to switch to oil fuel because of its greater energy density compared to coal.

>>43716050
Still isn't an issue. If you're going to have the Big Decisive Battle in the Philippines like the plans (on both sides) called for, US forces don't need oiler support to continue operating in them for an extended period. They just have to show up, have the battle, and then limp home, no need to refuel. The only problem would be the cruiser and destroyer screens, which WOULD need oiler support (since UNREP from the capital ships would eat into their fuel supplies), but for the capital ships, it's not a real consideration in that scenario.
>>
>>43716075

You know, it's not like US war planning in the runup to 1941 is an obscure, classified document. The last iteration of the Rainbow Plans called for leaving the Philippines on their own while Germany was defeated and the buildup of the USN produced an overwhelming degree of strength. And I'm pretty sure the consensus is that the older Plan Orange, which did envisage sending the Pacific Fleet to the immediate relief of the Philippines, is that it would have been a total fucking disaster if carried out in early 1942. Even Kimmel's plans to poke around the Marshall Islands were kind of risky as all hell in light of the temporary but real superiority of the IJN carrier forces.

http://www.history.army.mil/books/70-7_01.htm
>>
ABDA pulled what can be considered a sort of failed Thermopylae. The Japanese plan was not delayed by their fighting, but it delayed the Japanese themselves. If we had abandoned the Philippines and the DEI beforehand, Japan would've just invaded, taken the place with no resistance, and immediately start exploiting the valuable fuel and resources.

That we had no problems leaving Ranger as the only fleet carrier in teh Atlantic, even after every other fleet carrier in the US inventory at the time had been sunk or damaged during Guadalcanal?

Like we kept a few heavy surface units in teh Atlantic, but overall the British had that handled and the most needed thing were destroyers, destroyer escorts and escort carriers which the American, AND BRITISH AND CANADIANS had in droves.

>>
>>43716113

Yes, they did. in 1940, before the fall of France and the entry of Italy into the war. Back when France provided a substantial naval ally and the Mediterranean was not a serious theater of war. Blah blah Italians suck whatever, the Brits were not going to leave the eight battleships of the Regia Marina and their substantial light forces on their own. This was also before the British had to blockade the Atlantic ports and escort convoys to Murmansk that needed capital ship coverage against the surviving German battleships as well as cruisers and aircraft. Having a squadron of battleships in the Atlantic freed up British ships to focus on the Mediterranean; and just in time because the Italians temporarily knocked two of the QEs in Alexandria out in early 1942 via frogman-delivered limpet mines. And of course there was also the need to support potential landings and guard against the French fleet being taken over by the Axis; and indeed the USS Massachusetts wound up exchanging fire with a French battleship during Torch.

But well amateur /k/tard strategist, I'm sure you would haven known better than the Allied naval commanders did.

Was there really ANY way Japan could have come out of the wars around the 1940s for the better? Or was it all the military government waving their egos around and trying to appear more powerful than they actually were?

I mean, we've been taught that Germany and Japan were truly dangerous powers that threatened the entire world, but while they had a great deal of early success, is that really indicative of real power, or just the right circumstances for a short-term advantage? Germany's industry had good products, but low volume and while they had great officers, the supply of decent troops was quickly exhausted. In the East, Japan was military to the eyeballs, but lacked the infrastructure to support it. Their navy was impressive, but their tactics were antiquated...

It's starting to look more and more like WW2 was more an act of desperation by governments still trying to recover from the global shocks of WW1, rather than power grabs by organised, competent, dangerous and determined forces of evil...

Not when 4 of those 10 are lightly armored and under armed battle-cruisers that the Japanese decided to call battleships without actually upping their protection.

Then you have the two Fuso's, which are considered to be some of the worst battleships ever made, and the Ise's, which are just a repeat except with even worse living quarters.

So really what Japan has are 4 ships that can't join the battle line without exploding instantly, 4 ships that are so old and horribly built that even the Japanese didn't use them until there was literally nothing left, and two ships of the Nagato class, Japans only good battleships from that era.

Neither Yamato nor Musashi were completed yet.

YES! After the Battle of Britain (and the loss of German air superiority) the only threat from Axis battleships was to shipping - they couldn't stand in the line of battle against the RN for five minutes -- even if they managed to get their entire fleet in the same place. BBs were nothing but a liability in the Atlantic because a u-boat, which the Nazi's built by the fuckton, could pop one at any moment. The British had more than enough ships to cover Axis capital ships. American BBs existed to counter other BBs, and the only navy on the other side with those by late 1941 was the IJN. In the 1930s the Atlantic Fleet BBs were meant as a counter to BRITAIN if we had to go war with the RN.

Don't declare war on the US, force the US to declare war on them, then blockade the philipines and never invade.

USN either does nothing, making washington look weak as hell, or they get ordered to a battle far from their own supply lines in Japan's back yard.

Ideally, this leads to a short conflict with a negotiated settlement, because without a direct attack on US troops the US has little patience for a long war

The French fleet was scuttled at Toulon on 27 November 1942. USS Massachusetts traded fire with French Battleship Jean Bart on 8 November 1942. Also, what is the Regia Marina? What are Tirpitz, Gneisnau, and Scharnhorst?

The Allies of course did not want "even" matchups with the remaining Axis battleships in the Atlantic. They wanted to have multiple battleships ready to meet them, because a one-for-one matchup left too much room for a breakout attempt to evade engaging a capital ship. That's why the USN had battleships in the Atlantic even during the Guadalcanal campaign.

I was specifically referring to this assertion. After Pearl, no, we didn't have the battle line to get to the Philippines, nor did we have plans to do so. Seven ships operating independently as raiders, jerk. They need to be pinned down before they can be destroyed, and until they do, they're a threat to the convoys.

And the French fleet was not yet all over to the Allies yet. You had the Jean Bart at Casablanca plus the fleet at Toulon that the French "said" they would scuttle to keep the Germans from taking. Whether they would when push came to shove was not yet seen.

So, again. Stop arguing from hindsight. We know now that the Axis surface fleet was largely irrelevant after the Prinz Eugen made Brest. But in 1941, everything was an unknown. Until they're pinned down and sunk, you have to account for them in your strategic planning, so you can't just empty the Atlantic because "oh the British can handle it".

Penned in at their ports by British forces anchored on a number of capital ships. Ships they were short of early in 1942 following the Italians temporarily sinking two battleships in Alexandria Harbor. Remove the British ships pinning them up, and suddenly, the Italians aren't actually pinned anymore. No, of course not. If they were ever brought to battle they would have been destroyed just like they were in history. Their threat isn't to other warships, it's to the convoys. If you're trying to run a supply chain across an ocean, you have to take all possible enemy actions into account. And in 1941-1942 that included the German surface fleet.

Since New Thread soon, I might as well post this now.

USCGC Campbell was sunk on 29 November 1984 as a target in the mid-Pacific ocean by the United States Navy at coordinates 22°48′N 160°06′WCoordinates: [IMG]22°48′N 160°06′W, northwest of Hawaii, and rests at 2,800 fathoms (5,100 m). A final message was transmitted as the ship, which remained largely intact after a Harpoon missile strike, went down. It said:

"UNCLAS //N05752// SUBJ: FINAL FAREWELL

1. I SERVED WITH HONOR FOR ALMOST FORTY-SIX YEARS, IN WAR AND PEACE, IN THE ATLANTIC AND PACIFIC. WITH DUTY AS DIVERSE AS SAVING LIVES TO SINKING U-BOATS, OCEAN STATIONS TO FISHERIES ENFORCEMENT, AND FROM TRAINING CADETS TO BEING YOUR FLAGSHIP. I HAVE BEEN ALWAYS READY TO SERVE.

2. TODAY WAS MY FINAL DUTY. I WAS A TARGET FOR A MISSILE TEST. ITS SUCCESS WAS YOUR LOSS AND MY DEMISE. NOW KING NEPTUNE HAS CALLED ME TO MY FINAL REST IN 2,600 FATHOMS AT 22-48N 160-06W.

3. MOURN NOT, ALL WHO HAVE SAILED WITH ME. A NEW CUTTER CAMPBELL BEARING MY NAME, WMEC-909, WILL SOON CONTINUE THE HERITAGE. I BID ADIEU. THE QUEEN IS DEAD. LONG LIVE THE QUEEN."

The british fleet was more afraid of the U-boat peril than the surface fleet that they can engage toe-to-toe.
>>
>>43716817
You forget the impact it would have had on the European theater. If we went Europe first the IJN would have made the Pacific a death trap by the time we got to it. I'm not saying the Japs win, but they could have made it a very costly fight - beyond even what we had to go through in reality. We could not have fought the IJN down two carriers and, more importantly, their crews.

Tell that to Scheer, and Scharnhorst and Gniesenau's early raids.

The reason the Bismarck got hunted down as quickly as it did was a *lot* of luck involving that torpedo and lucky spotter planes.

>THE CONVOYS

Okay, listen, motherfucker. Read a fucking map. Specifically, this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denmark_Strait

It's no coincidence that Bismark and Eugen were brought to battle IN THIS STRAIT, while trying to break into the Atlantic to conduct convoy raiding. By late 1941 lend-lease convoys to Russia were a thing, so you did have to send a few battleships/battlecruisers through with each convoy (to guard their transit through the North Sea) but they were nowhere near the peak tempo they'd reach later, and they could be attached and detached from the Home Fleet when the convoys left and/or passed England.

The British had plenty of force available to deal with the French fleet at Toulon, as they demonstrated handily by blowing it the fuck up. In the post-dreadnaught era a fleet at anchor is a goddman target, no airpower needed. That was proven multiple times and was never really in doubt - the only harbored fleet that was really safe was one your fleet couldn't reach in the first place; i.e. North Sea ports, where transiting battleships would be subject to sustained air attack and e-boat raids.

We attached battleships to the Atlantic because we could, not because we absolutely had to. The far greater threat and tactical limitation was destroyers; to fend off air attack, to fend off Germany's big U-boat fleet at a time when U-boat countermeasures were primitive, and destroyers are massive fuel hogs requiring more than their fair share of oiler support which makes things worse. And it's hard to sortie a battleship fleet without destroyers along to do all those same jobs, protecting the big capital ships and absorbing the brunt of Japanese night-fighting destroyer raids before main line action commences. Prince of Wales and Repulse hadn't been lost yet; and the Brits had US/Dutch/Aussie support to count on in their strategic calculations.

Dude, I don't care HOW strong your shield is, if a warship concentrates its full AAA complement on you, sheer volume of fire will tear you apart. You physically can't block that much firepower. If you have a shield in front of you, what about all the shrapnel from the heavy AAA?
>>
>>43716959
Because they knew they had superiority in the Atlantic, not parity. The USN helped with that.

Which is my entire point, not that the Axis had some kind of superfleet of superships.

>It's no coincidence that Bismark and Eugen were brought to battle IN THIS STRAIT,

Well yes, because that's where Norfolk and Suffolk got lucky and found them. Even with radar-equipped ships watching the strait, it still took luck to find them.

The problem was that once they were IN the Atlantic they were hard to find again. They didn't have to return to Germany to rearm and refuel; they could do that at Brest. Even after the Bismarck was sunk, they still had Prinz Eugen plus Scharnhorst and Gneisenau at Brest; they didn't make the Channel Dash until mid 1942.

Destroyers/oilers/AKs/etc. are much faster to build than big warships; not having to roll and bake massive armor plates helps a lot in that regard. And we'd already ramped up production of such crucial things a year before: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-Ocean_Navy_Act Note it says TWO OCEAN NAVY. Two. Oceans. I very much doubt we had a crushing need to assign battleships to the Atlantic. There's a reason the Japanese focused on asymmetric tactics - we had more battleships, period, and many of our warships were much newer than theirs.

You're basically telling me that we just couldn't take the fight to the Japanese side of the lake with a battleship fleet that had been built, equipped and trained since the late 20s with that exact job in mind. I dunno bro, I dunno.

I'm calling the thread here tonight - I've had one hell of a week and I just cannot get into the story enough tonight to make it anything more than flat boring filler drivel, and I've sworn an oath to avoid that shit, because that shit killed SWQ. As evidenced by my arguing in thread I'd rather do almost anything than write right now, I just can't do it tonight.

I'mma have a good long think about how I want to run these threads in the future - I might get someone to count votes for me and summarize discussion so I don't need to actually read threads. Planefag's had enough, smile, optimism gone, something needs to change.

In early 1942 the Italians still had six battleships, Giulio Cesare, Andrea Doria, Caio Duili, Littorio, Vittorio Veneto, and Roma; only one of the old battleships hit at Taranto was actually a complete loss. The others were repaired and returned to service by early 1942. The Germans still had Scharnhorst, Gneisnau, and Tirpitz, as well as the raiders Deutschland and Admiral Scheer. Vichy France still had Richeliu, Jean Bart, Dunkerque, Normandie, Provence, and Lorraine.

So that's fifteen hostile/potentially hostile battleships in the Atlantic-Mediterranean that needed covering with an Allied capital ship. Another two very heavy cruisers that a capital ship would be useful to guard convoys against. And some of the Axis ships required multiple capital ships to cover both to insure they were destroyed with acceptable losses and to make sure they couldn't slip out without being engaged by a capital ship.

The Japanese of course had another eleven capital ships by early 1942, plus six large carriers and two-three light carriers.

The Royal Navy was stretched very, very thin in Europe because the Axis could choose when and where to sortie, but the RN could not choose when and where to defend. The USN battleships in the Atlantic relieved some of the pressure on the RN and could carry out bombardments, cover the blockade forces, etc.

Sure, the USN would have had a major margin of superiority by 1943 thanks to the new construction from the Two Ocean Navy Act, the neutralization of the Vichy French fleet in November 1942, and the surrender of Italy ending any possible naval threat in the Mediterranean. Of course, then battleships were needed in the Atlantic to do fire support for the various amphibious operations, but at that point the USN and RN had battleships to spare.

In January-February 1942 the balance was much less favorable thanks to the need to have a greater number of capital ships available to counter the German, Italian, and Vichey French fleets. Perhaps in hindsight it wasn't necessary, but no admiral at that point was going to discount the threat a battleship represented. For a variety of reasons the Allies had to have more capital ships on hand than the Axis in order to intercept a sortie and insure more favorable terms of battle.

Concentrating the full USN to go after Japan was not going to happen thanks to the strategically sound decision to focus efforts on Germany. The fleet that Kimmel actually would have had available in early 1942 had only a limited margin of superiority over the Japanese, and would have been vulnerable to the asymmetric tactics of the Japanese. It might have won, it might have turned into a disaster thanks to underestimating the threat of the Japanese torpedos and naval aviation; but it damned sure would not have been an "easy" fight or a walkover. So the USN decided to wait until it had such a gross margin of superiority from new construction, by early 1944, to take to the offensive in the Central Pacific. And in doing so it had learned valuable lessons in the fighting in the Solomons and so the new ships and new doctrines crushed an depleted IJN. But circumstances in early 1942 were, again, very different from circumstances after mid-1943.

Thing is with planefag quests, is that by this point he's known for being such a good writer that his quests can easily be some of the most popular on the board for people who like questing, animays, and historical facts. As such, the threads eventually grow too fast, too quickly. Then planefag ends up reading and replying to some of the historical discussions, and that delays the next update further. A vicious cycle.
