You are the head researcher at a government facility. Your sole responsibility is to teach the world's first autonomous AI, nicknamed Pandora, about life, the world and her existence.
Previously you tested out Pandora's new body with a little doctor-android dance to her and the R&D team's delight. Then decided to take a trip to the gym with Babsy to test Pandora's new body's physical prowess. Welcome back to Pandora Quest!
>Previous threads: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?searchall=pandora+quest

>>
You explain the simple ideas of the weights and punching bags around the area to Pandora, showing her how it's done using somewhat embarrassingly light dumbbells. You hear light chuckles from some of the security team around you, but you brush it off. Pandora mimics your attempts, lifting some of the lighter weights slowly. She's not terribly good at it, with a maximum lift-strength of around 40 pounds at best, but she feels accomplished seeing what she can do.

You have her try hitting a bag next, only for her to not really know what to do. She seems to worry about being violent toward the bags after your long chat about hurting others. You assure her it's alright and that the purpose of these is to be punched to test yourself. You give it a few practice blows to show her to another murmur of laughs and whispers from security. Pandora timidly tries herself, but you can tell her heart's not really in it. Seems violence just isn't in her heart, or the equivalent, anyway. Still, you're proud of her for trying.

What should you try next?

You take Pandora over to the track area, stretching your legs out a little before you begin, then tell Pandora you want her to run with you. She lights up the idea of getting to actually run around and immediately shoots off without you, zipping around at a surprisingly high speed for her frame. She easily overtakes a few people simply jogging at a comfortable speed, but you get a feeling she's going all out. A little white rocket on the track, her dress billowing behind her like her own vapor trail. You realize now that you have no hope of catching up to her. You're both proud of her prowess and ashamed to think that you're so athletically challenged an android who has literally never run before is far better at it that you are.

You slow to a stop to catch your breath and watch her fly around the track, a smile plastered across her face as her hair vibrantly changes colors to match her jubilant mood. However, your eyes suddenly lock onto something you miraculously find more impressive than the world's most advanced android taking her first run; Babsy has arrived and you nearly forget where you are. She has replaced the frumpy, dirty jumpsuit for a tank top and running shorts, giving you a look at her rather impressive physique for what you've heard referred to as a "wrench jockey". She waves over at you, oblivious to the number of eyes shifting to her. Don't choke, you think to yourself repeatedly as you wave back.

"I see she's taken to running quite a bit." Babsy says with a laugh.

"Y-yeah." you reply, your matra still on loop in your mind. Pandora notices Babsy and waves as she makes a hard turn to run over to her, slowing down just enough to gently run into Babsy for a hug.

"Having fun, sweetheart?" Babsy asks. You have to stop yourself from answering when you realize she's speaking to the android. Pandora nods enthusiastically. "Good! Maybe you'd like to try a little friendly competition then? How about a race?"

You and a few others all gather around at a starting point, security included. There's a few murmurs here and there, some people simply vocalizing their interest, others actually taking bets on the winner. A select few have some unsavory things to say about Pandora, as well as about certain aspects of Babsy's anatomy that you'd prefer not to listen to. You think about stopping the bets and dispersing the crowd, but Pandora seems to be enjoying all the new people to see. Still, you hope she doesn't overhear the comments about "the walking tin can" and so on.

After a minute for the two to get ready, Babsy stretching in a rather fetching fashion, a few ground rules being set and a stop watch program being brought up on your PDA, you think you're ready to begin. The two get into a ready position, Babsy having to show Pandora how, and you give them the signal to go. They shoot off, an impressive burst of speed from Babsy, especially considering she spends most of her days sitting around working on machinery. She is certainly full of surprises today. However, the little android is no slouch either. They seem to be neck and neck for the majority of the race, evenly matched and equally enthusiastic. However, near the end of the race, you see Babsy beginning to fall behind, possibly getting tired. Not feeling fatigue is certainly a bonus in this situation.

The two eventually cross the finish line, Pandora easily winning by 5 seconds or so, running at a reduced but still worrying velocity into your arms for a high-speed hug, resulting in a "whuff!" to escape your mouth and a laugh from hers. Babsy is panting and rather sweaty, but still happy as she catches her breath, smiling at the giddy android.

"I won!" Pandora shouts "I won, I won!"

"Sure..." gasps Babsy "did..."

"Proud of you, Pandora." you say, ruffling her flashing hair.

"Let's do more!" Pandora cries, hopping up and down. She doesn't show any signs of slowing down one bit.

Break time it is, then. Writing.

You decide a break is in order, mostly for Babsy, who is currently still trying to catch her breath, gasping for air and leaning on a nearby goalpost. She doesn't seem to have any complaints.

"But why?" Pandora asks "I want to keep running! I like running!"

"Humans" you explain "require rest after exerting themselves like that. We don't run on batteries like you do. We have to take some time to let our bodies recover. It's how we get better at things. We need to work our muscles, let them break down a little, then build back up better than before."

"Ohhh..." Pandora responds, looking over at Babsy sitting on a nearby bench, drinking heavily from a bottle of water. "But not me?"

"No, not you" you say "you don't have organic muscles like us. You get better with new hardware and things like that, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't enjoy yourself, right?" She nods.

"I would like to be better at running," she says, watching some of the people as they continue their workout routines "and lifting and jumping and stuff. Can I? I want to come back here a lot and do more!"
A physical upgrade wouldn't be hard to do, you think. She's not terribly impressive as far as physical prowess goes. Beyond running, anyway, and that's more stamina than anything.

Plus if we work a feature like that into the eventual "Pandora 2" the military brass likes, it might be something that will disabuse another AI of the notion that it is innately "better" than human beings, seeing as it also has to work out, to get better.

Maybe if her strength was also a dial or pair of buttons that she could manually "turn up or turn down" as needed to also reinforce the whole "working out" thing.

True. But i like the idea of giving pandora the oppertunity the grow.

The frame basically makes her harder to break. New muscles might inspire her to "try to be better" on her own terms basically.
>>
>>43718297
My proposal is that we agree, but tell her it is going to be in the future. I want her to get further academically first.

Well, is there a consensus yet? Is that a "yes" on the upgrades, but with some form of stipulation?

You send a message to R&D about increased servo strength for Pandora's body, but with the stipulation to include a limiter to prevent her from using her newfound strength without being ready for it. Mouse responds with a confirmation and an ETA of 4 days. The limiter should keep everything safe and the brass from getting angry at upgrading the new AI to potentially dangerous levels. This should work out in everyone's favor, but you'll have to go over some safety precautions with Pandora to make sure she understands the responsibility.

Babsy joins the both of you, apparently gotten the rest she needs, or at least just gotten sick of the creepy leers the security team have been giving her. She gives you a "I hope you know what you're doing" look, but doesn't mention the upgrade any further.

"You know, Pandora" Babsy says "the doctor hasn't really gotten his fill of activity today. Maybe you should challenge him to a game of tennis?" You pale a little at this.

"Tennis?" Pandora asks, a confused look on her face. "Does it have running?"

"Oh, lots!" Babsy replies, motioning over to the tennis courts. "Running is one of the most important parts of it!"

"Yeah! Tennis!" Pandora jumps up and down, oblivious to the mischievous grin Babsy is giving you.

Babsy spends a few minutes explaining the rules of Tennis to Pandora (and you), explaining how it works in as simple a manner as possible. She doesn't go too in-depth with strategy or anything like that, just the bare bones of how to play. Pandora seems to get it, you as well, enough for a short game or two anyway. You know this is going to end badly for you, you can just feel it.

You and Pandora square off in an open tennis court, gathering another small crowd. More bets are taken, more comments about it all, but you try to keep focused on the game. Which doesn't go entirely to your liking. You were the kind of kid who skipped gym to study in the library in school, so athletics have never really been your thing. Algorithms, theories, physics and such are more your speed, and though you've heard math can be applied to sports in theory, actually practicing it is another thing all together. Frankly speaking, she kicks your ass. You're essentially evenly-matched as far as experience goes, but she still has the whole stamina edge on you, never getting tired and always going at 100%. It's a little awkward at first as you both learn how to do anything, but soon enough she was acing you left and right.

Mercifully the match ends with you a sweaty, panting mess and Pandora the victor. You hear the on-lookers clapping quietly, you suspect as much to congratulate the winner as it is to mock you. You're entirely too tired to care.

"You did...well." Babsy says, kneeling next to your prone form, a comforting hand on your shoulder. You feel a mix of glee at her being so close, shame at floundering pathetically in front of her and still too damn tired to care.

"Th...thanks..." you wheeze out.

It takes you a while to regain your composure enough to actually stand, but once you do the gym has considerably thinned out. It's probably close to dinner. Pandora and Babsy have been chatting while they wait for you to gather your masculinity up, but once you do you think you've had just about enough of the athletic section of the Facility. Babsy tells you she's going to go take a shower and then head to the mess hall for dinner, offering to meet you there if you're interested.

You think a nice dinner with Babsy sounds delightful, even though it'd just be in the mess hall surrounded by people who just saw you suck a fat one at tennis. You tell Pandora it's time for bed, and despite not wanting to sleep, she's in too good of a mood to really complain. Maybe you'll come back out here next time she's in a sour mood, or perhaps as a reward.

After leading Pandora back to her room, setting her up in the charging cradle and hugging her good night, you decide a nice gesture might be in order and you write a small note for her to find in the morning reading "Good job!" It's not much, but it's the little things, as they say.

You head back to your room for a quick shower and a change of clothes, returning to find a message on your PDA. Reading it, your heart immediately stops, your body freezes and every neuron in your brain fires at once.
