You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

You groan as your alarm clock rings for what seems to be the hundredth time. You had stayed up almost all night doing more research on the "internet" to catch up to current events. Naturally, the US Navy totally kicked Japan's ass after the war, and you still feel quite a bit of pride knowing that even today, the USN was still the most powerful naval force in the world.

What was even more amusing was that battleships and cruisers had been phased out in favor of carriers, submarines, and DESTROYERS. Destroyer pride, bitches!

But that did mean you didn't quite get as much sleep that you probably really should have. You're finally convinced to open when you feel somebody yank your blanket away.

"Come on, get up." Heerman sighs, tossing your blanket across the room and out of your reach.

"Five more minuuuuuuuuuuuutes." You groan.

"You said that thirty minutes ago." Heerman shakes her head.

"Come on, Hoel! We have a mission today!" Johnston says happily. She was awfully chipper today. "I thought you were looking forward to that!"

Well, she was right, actually. You give a big yawn and slowly get up and check the time. You still had a little over an hour to report to duty.

"Let's get something to eeeeaaaaaaaat." You declare as you haphazardly pull your uniform on. "I'm STARVING!"

"Great idea!" Johnston smiles brightly. "It would be great to see Mulberry again!"

"Sounds like a plan." Heerman agrees.

The three of you head out of the barracks and towards Mulberry's cafe. As you head there, you pass by a few other shipgirls, who seem to be waking up for their morning duties, as well as others just returning from night patrols. You don't immediately recognize most of them, but you trade them the complimentary greetings as you pass.

"Ah! Hoel, Johnston, Heerman! Welcome back!" Mulberry gives a motherly smile as you you enter. "I hear you three are going out on a mission today?"

"That's right." You nod as you take a seat at an empty table. Mulberry gracefully walks forward, a tray in her hands as her heel click against the woof floor.

"Well then, that means you three are the first in line for my breakfast special!" Mulberry sets down a trio of plates with a strange, yellow pasty.

"What... what is this?" You blink. Your sisters also look at it curiously.

"A waffle cupcake! Give it a try!" Mulberry says happily as she pours maple syrup all over the cupakes, adding a dash of butter and some bacon sprinkles on top.

You don't even hesitate. Just the smell alone convinces you to take a huge bite out of the cupcake, and your mouth explodes with flavor.

"OHMIGRRRRRRRRRRD." You squeal as you chew.

"Aaaaaaah~" Johnston puts a hand to her cheek.

"It's really good..." Heerman nods in approval.

"Excellent!" Mulberry's smile shines like the rising sun outside. "Anyways, enjoy yourselves. If you need anything just call!"

As Mulberry heads off to cater to other customers, you hear the door swing open and see Anna dash in in a hurry, carrying several large jugs. Mulberry doesn't even stop her as she heads behind the counter and just starts emptying the simmering coffee pots in the kitchen directly into the jugs.

You reluctantly scarf down the rest of your cupake and then head over to the counter.

"So, is it common for you to steal all the coffee, Anna?" You ask with a grin.

"Uwaaah!" Anna yelps as she leaps in fright, nearly dropping her containers. You quickly vault over the counter and grab one of them, narrowly saving her from having scalding hot coffee spilled on top of her. "S-sorry!"

"Nah, sorry, I shouldn't have startled you like that." You sigh as you set the container securely on the counter. "So why are you taking all the coffee?"

"Oh, no, all this is for me! Mulberry brews it every morning!" Anna smiles softly as she starts clipping the containers to her belt. "I'm the only Relay Ship in the fleet so I usually have to work long hours. The coffee just helps me stay alert."

"That sounds rough." You frown. "And you're okay with that?"

"Ah, well..." Anna shrugs. "I'm not particularly fast, I don't have any armor, and I can't fight well at all. Comms is the only thing I'm good at if there's any way I can help, I'll gladly do it!"

The way she's so happy and chipper about what she said just seems so endearing.

"Ooooooooh, what's this?" Johnston gives an evil smile as materializes behind Anna, her hands swooping in and pinching Anna's cheeks. "Did our little Hoel reel in a cute little fishy?"

"Uwaaaaah!" Anna whines.

"Making a new friend already?" Heerman notes with a slight grin. "Why didn't you tell us?"

"I was going to." You pout.

"Come on, Johnston, quit it." You sigh as you grab your sister by the collar and drag her away.

"B-but she's so cuuuuuuuute!" Johnston protests as she helplessly struggles against your grip.

"Well, she's got important things to do, isn't that right, Anna?" You say.

"O-oh yeah!" Anna nods rapidly as she quickly puts her hat back onto her down disheveled hair. "Th-thanks!"

"Here." Heerman helpfully hands Anna the rest of the coffee containers, as well as her headphones that she had set ahead.

"Thanks!" Anna smiles brightly and she waves as she heads out the door. "Good luck, Hoel! Knock 'em out of the park!"

However, just as Anna leaves, Portland enters, looking just as serious and stern as ever.

"I figured I'd find you here. Come on, we have to go." Portland frowns, pointing to the watch on her wrist.

"Oh! Portland!" Mulberry turns to greet the newly arrived cruiser. "Have some breakfast first! You'll need the energy!"

"But... but.. WAFFLE CUPCAKES!" You protest.

"Yeah! They're REALLY good!" Johnston, still in your hand's grip, backs you up.

"Come now, Portland, wasn't you that always said breakfast was the most important meal of the day?" Mulberry smiles softly as she holds a tray of the breakfast pastries in front of the cruiser. "You can even take one on the go!"

"Fine." Portland grabs one of the cupcakes and takes a quick bite out of it. "The rest of you can grab what you can carry and we'll head over to the rally point."

You and your sisters quickly clear the whole tray, haphazardly stacking as many waffle cupcakes into your arms as possible. Though Porland is still looking all serious, you see her surreptitiously snatch an extra cupcake out of the pile when she thinks nobody is looking. The four of you then dash to the rally point, which was at one of the base's landing pads. An Osprey, as well as the Admiral himself, waits patiently for you.

"A-Admiral?" Portland skids to a halt and salutes, a cupcake still lodged in her mouth. "I-I-I didn't expect to see you here?!"

"Now why wouldn't I take some time out of my busy morning to see of my girls on their first mission?" The Admiral chuckles and pats you and your sisters' heads, ending with Portland, who does nothing to resist.

You get the feeling you're starting to kinda like this guy.

"Come home safe, all of you. That's an order." The Admiral says. "Sam, if you will."

"All the mission details and everything are right here!" Sam says with a grin as she hands a red folder to Portland. Portland takes it, keeping a wary on on Sam as if not fully trusting her. "Well, see ya girls later!"

The four of you quickly board the waiting Osprey as its engines begins spinning up. The Admiral stays on the landing pad to see you off, the propeller backwash actually blowing his hat off. It would've been lost to the winds if it weren't for a well timed catch from Sam. He then gives one last salute as the Osprey pulls away from the base.

"All right, so what are we doing?" You ask as you lounge back in your seat and stretch your legs.

"Standard recon in force." Portland says as her eyes dart across the files she was given. "We'll be heading to the outer edge of Abyssal territory to provoke a response, and then engage any forces they send out."

"Sounds simple enough." Heerman nods. "What do we expect to face?"

"Mostly just destroyer level Abyssals." Portland flips through the files. "However, it seems they're adapting to our ambush tactics are starting to attach light cruisers to their formations, so be wary of that."

"How about our support?" You ask skeptically.

"Well, you have me, for starters." Portland continues, causing you to roll your eyes. "We'll also have air support on call if needed. We're still close enough to Hawaii that ground based planes can cover us. STRIKE-1 will also be present, but they'll be performing secondary objectives so don't expect direct assistance from them.

"Do I even want to know?' You frown.

"If you have to ask, then no." Rochelle huffs as she snaps the folder closed. "That's it. Objectives are simply to engage and destroy all Abyssals in the area. Can't get any more simple than that."

"My kind of mission!" Johnston smiles gleefully.

"We're over the AO!" The pilot announces. "Dropping down to deployment altitude!"

The Osprey then begins to lower until it's just a handful of feet above the ocean surface, kicking up salty mist and spray from the backwash of its massive propellers.

"Just follow my lead." Portland instructs as she leaps off the rear ramp of the craft, summoning her Rig in midair as her feet plant firmly into the water. Her smokestack belches black smoke as her boilers fire up and she jets away from Osprey, spinning around and motioning for you to follow.

You and sisters all leap out one by one, summoning your own Rigs as you land on the water. With its charges deployed, the Osprey's engines roar as it climbs back into the air again. Farther back, about three hundred meters away, you notice two more Ospreys dropping fully laden Zodiac boats into the water. No doubt STRIKE-1 on their "secret" mission.

"All right, TF3, I'm not seeing any enemy contacts in your vicinity. You're clear for the moment!" You hear Anna's chipper voice report.

"All right, we'll just circle around here and wait for them to come to us." Portland says.

"What, and give them the initiative?" You blink.

"You have a better plan?" Portland raises an eyebrow.

You see something on your radar, something really BIG, and surrounded by a cluster of smaller contacts.

"Hey guys, um, do you see what I'm seeing here?" You ask as you start to slow down.

"Oh my god." You see Portland's advance grind to halt. "That's a Wa-class transport. What the hell is it doing out here?"

"A Wa-class?!?!" You hear Vahlen's voice butt in over the frequency. "Portland, I cannot stress to you how valuable an intact Wa-class would be to our research! You must capture it!"

"A Wa-what? Johnston asks in confusion.

"A type of transport the Abyssals use to ferry supplies between bases." Vahlen explains. "We've only seen them on satellite and aerial reconnaissance photos so far. If we could capture it..."

"We know, we know. Great research potential." Portland sighs. "The problem is, it's being guarded by six DDs and two CLs. It'll be a tough nut to crack."

"Well, since I am not your superior I can't order you to attack, but I highly encourage you to." Vahlen continues, her eagerness all too obvious.

"I'll think about it." Portland grunts as she cuts the line."They're still maintaining course. Either they haven't seen us yet or they aren't looking for a fight. I've half a mind to just let them go. That's a big escort force to handle."

"Are you saying we can't handle it?" You growl.

"Well, Abyssal DDs and CLs aren't a particularly large threat on their own." Portland shakes her head. "But with their numbers the odds are too uncertain."

"Yeah! We've faced worse odds before!" Johnston nods.

"And we know for a fact those destroyers aren't too tough." Heerman adds in.

"All right, all right, we'll attack." Portland sighs. "One way to thin their numbers quickly is to open with a torpedo salvo. Their maneuvering capability is hampered by their need to stick close to the transport, so we've got a good shot at it."

"What if we accidentally hit the transport?" Heerman asks. "One hit is all it takes to sink it."

"Well, we could always go in with guns blazing, since our radar fire directors are more accurate than any torpedo, but that would mean we'd be in range of their guns as well." Portland cautions. "Too dangerous."

"We were built ready." You assure her.

"All right, then go!" Portland barks as her 8 inch cannons roar, dropping shells among the Abyssal formation. For a brief few seconds, the Abyssal escorts pause, their freakish heads swiveling around as if trying to find the source of the attacks. Those brief seconds are all you need to close into torpedo range.

"Torps away!" You bark as your thigh mounted torpedo launchers release their explosive cargo. The torpedoes plunge into the water and streak off.

You track your torpedoes visually as they go, following the small wakes they created as they close distance with the Abyssal convoy. Unfortunately, the Abyssals spot them too, and begin taking evasive action. As a group, the immediately take a hard turn to port, turning away from you and your torpedoes. Clever bastards. The range on your mk15s wasn't too great, so if the Abyssals could keep ahead long enough their energy would peter out.

"Looks like torpedoes are a wash. Switch to guns." Portland instructs as she starts picking up speed.

"Like we needed you to tell us that, USS Obvious." You roll your eyes.

As predicted, your torpedoes begin to lose energy and sink. A couple almost manage to catch up, but a single Abyssal destroyer spins around uses itself as a shield, trading its life to absorb the remaining torpedoes. Meanwhile, the Destroyers split off into two groups of three and two respectively, while the two CLs remain with the fleeing transport.

Now, Fletcher-class destroyers like you were famous for their speed. You could catch up to the transport no problem, and the armor on those CLs should be thin enough even for your 5 inchers to penetrate up close. The problem was those destroyers. You were pretty sure their regular guns couldn't scratch Portland at any range, but if they were carrying torpedoes, that would seriously even the odds between them and the heavy cruiser.

"Johnston, Heer! Make sure Straight Laces doesn't get herself sunk!" You bark to your sisters.

"Okay!" Johnston and Heerman nod as they break off to interdict the Abyssal destroyers. Meanwhile, Portland continues to lay down punishing long range fire on the Abyssals, scoring a direct hit on one destroyer, blowing it to pieces from the resulting explosion.

Meanwhile, you put your screws at full forward speed as you chase after the transport and its escorts. The CLs, a pair of horrible, vaguely humanoid amalgamations of flesh and metal, turn to face you, their cannons swiveling to track your movements.

You start weaving back and forth in an effort to throw off the Abyssal CLs' aim. From what you can tell, these Abyssals didn't even have radar guided fire control, so they had to manually aim their weapons. Fortunately, you didn't have such restrictions, and even as you ducked and weaved, your own fire control radar was already feeding you continuous targeting data. Your rig mounted turret and your handheld one immediately lock on to the nearest CL and just begin pumping 5 inch shells into it. It seemed that half humanoid torso protruding from the front was the weak point, as you could see your shells punching clean through its "chest". Ugly black oilblood gushes from the wounds, staining the water around it as the mortally wounded CL slows to a crawl, its "torso" slumping down.

However, the second CL continues firing on you as it closes, and now it's had time to manually correct its shots as splashes from near misses start raining water down onto you, which was never a good sign. You pivot on one foot to bring yourself into line with the second CL, only for a few lucky shells to knock your handheld turret right out of your hands, and punching clean through your rig mounted one. It's a clean penetration. There's no explosion, but the turret won't respond to your commands.

This wasn't good at all. No guns, no torpedoes, and no bat. You had nothing left to fight with except-

Oh

OH

Maybe it was just crazy enough to work.

You reach your arm around back to your rig, and your depth charge launcher deposits one of the small explosive charges directly into your grasp. As you CL's fire starts boxing you in, you wind up your arm, squint your eyes, pull the safety pin from the charge...

...and you throw literally the most important fastball of your life.

The depth charge isn't exactly the most aerodynamic of designs, and it tumbles and rolls haphazardly through the air, but the brute force of your throw beats physics this day. The impact against the CL's chest is hard enough to set off the depth charge and it explodes point blank, shrouding the CL in smoke and fire. When it clears, all you can see are a few clumps of floating meat and an oilblood stain where the Abyssal used to be.

"Holy shiiiiiiiiiiit, Hoel!" Johnston cheers as she hugs you from behind. "That was awesome!"

"Major league material right there." Heerman skates up next to you. You see that she's taken a couple of hits, her Rig having a few new holes and dents.

"Extremely reckless, and nearly got you killed." Portland grumbles and crosses her arms as she catches up. "But I have to give you points for creativity."

You just stare at her curiously.

"It was a compliment." Portland sighs. "Enjoy it while it last."

"Well thank you." You say as you give a mock curtsy.

"Don't be cute with me." Portland grumbles as she sails past. Without its escorts, the Abyssal transport doesn't seem to have any clue what to do next, and just seems to sit dead in the water, its head looking around as if it was in a confused daze.

"Jesus this things way uglier up close." Johnston winces at the transport's bloated, spherical body.

"And smells worse, too." Heerman wrinkles her nose. "The hell is it carrying? Sewage?"

"Who knows. I'm not about to crack it open to find out." Portland shakes her head. "Anyways, mission accomplished. STRIKE-1 will recover the transport and the corpses. We'll head back for extraction."

"What, that's it?" You gasp.

"Well, first of all, your turrets are shot, and what little armor Heerman has is practically swiss cheese at this point." Portland glowers. "If I'm feeling particularly generous, and I never am, we're at 75% combat effectiveness at best. And something tells me that depth charge trick isn't going to work twice."

"Fine, you have a point." You concede. "Let's go."

"Annapolis, call in exfil." Portland says over the radio. "We're done here."

"Roger roger!" Anna chirps. "Ospreys on the way!"

As your little task force waits for exfiltration, you watch as STRIKE-1 does their work. They head over to the site of the battle with in their zodiacs, using nets and long poles and collected the Abyssal corpses and whatever bits they can scoop up. One zodiac is dedicated to lashing cargo straps onto the Abyssal transport, which kind of just sits there, not doing anything to resist.

"Weirdest Abyssal I've ever seen." Portland frowns. "Normally all the ones we've encountered are hyper aggressive. It's so odd to see one so... docile."

"Yeah, now that you mention it, it's kinda like a cow, isn't it?" Johnston observes.

"What are they collecting all those bodies for, anyways?" Heerman asks curiously.

"Research specimens for the Science Division. They're always looking for more corpses." Portland shrugs. "Big, small, intact or in pieces, Vahlen always wants everything."

"Sounds really fucking creepy." You shiver. You can almost visualize Vahlen cutting up those Abyssals on a table, carefully cataloging every piece she removes with a smile on her face.

"It is." Portland nods in agreement. "I think the Admiral gives her and the Science Division far too much freedom. There's large parts of the labs that are off limits, even to shipgirls. Who knows what kind of things they're up to down there."

"Well, as long as they come up with shit that helps us blow up more Abyssals, I'm not complaining." You shrug.

"Ah, I'm not too good with all that complicated science stuff anyways!" Johnston playfully raps a fist against the side of her head. "Combat is all I need!"

"Leave it to destroyers to be so single minded." Portland shakes her head.

You ping your radar and finally see the blip of your exfiltration Osprey. However, it was still a good ways out, and would take some time to reach you.

"Anyways, what do you think about the rest of the people at the base?" You ask. "You know, like Captain Takeuchi, Dr. Shen, STRIKE-1 here?"

"Hmph." Portland huffs, as if trying to pretend it's a privilege for you to talk to her. "In my opinion, the Captain can be a bit stiff and narrow minded, but his heart's in the right place. Shen's an absolutely brilliant engineer, though. He figured out how to refit modernized systems into the older shipgirls. Other than the faeries, I don't think there's anybody else that knows more about Rigs than him."

"And those guys?" You nod to STRIKE-1.

"Brave people, all of them." Portland bites her lip. "Before any of us came back, those people were the first and last line of defense against the Abyssals, and they suffered heavily for it. There are very few people remaining among their ranks that have been there when this whole Abyssal thing started."

"Damn." You whistle "Like who?"

"Section, for starters." Portland states. "Rumor has it that he has the very first confirmed Abyssal kill. But, well, he doesn't talk much about those times. A lot of bad memories, I think."

"But are they okay with being basically janitors now?" Heerman observes as the team continues gather Abyssal parts. "That's gotta be step down from what they used to do."

"Honestly, I don't think they mind." Portland sighs. "Casualties dropped off sharply, and I think they're happy they can support shipgirls in any way they can. Lord knows, there aren't very many people brave enough to venture this far out into open sea these days."

>>
>>43751808
"I guess you got a point." You nod and let the silence carry for a little while before asking another question that had been nagging at you. "Hey Portland, mind if I ask you a really personal question?"

"Depends on the question." Portland responds suspiciously.

"What was it like when you came back?" You ask.

"Ah well..." Portland frowns as she scratches her head. "Honestly, it's really fuzzy. All I remember is being on a beach and hearing some voice... and then suddenly I was at Pearl Harbor fighting off Abyssals trying to get inside the bay."

"Huh, is that so." You nod. "I kind of remember being on a beach, too."

"It's something I found is common among all the shipgirls that came back." Portland confirms. "None of us really know what it means, though."

Suddenly the air felt just a little colder.

"It's a real mystery, isn't it?" You sigh.

"One we can figure out after we deal with this Abyssal threat." Portland grunts.

"I suppose you've got a point." You concede as you hear the trademark sound of an approaching Osprey. "So how impressed do you think the Admiral is going to be?"

"Not very. I'm going to tell him about your blatant insubordination." Portland frowns. "Absolutely unacceptable."

"Haha, fuck you too, Portland." You smile while giving her the one finger salute.

"Cute, thinking that's going to change my mind." Portland rolls her eyes as the Osprey drops down to pick you up. You all dismiss your rigs to find the Admiral of all people sitting inside.

"A-Admiral!" Portland nearly shrieks as salutes faster than the speed of light. "What are you doing here?!"

"Well, I was watching what was happening over STRIKE-1's livefeed, and I was so impressed I thought I'd come congratulate you personally!" The Admiral smiles. "You all showed a coordination and fighting spirit that exceeds any other task force so far!"

"Sir-" Portland starts but doesn't get a chance to continue.

"And I know you've kept requesting your own command, so I've given it some thought, and I figure what better posting than to lead lead Taffy 3 as part of your own task force?" The Admiral smiles.

You don't know if the Admiral was really being this clueless or if he was doing this deliberately. Either way, the way Portland is trying not to look horrified is PRICELESS.

You also notice Sam snickering in the background. You wonder if she had anything to do with this. Money on that she did.

"W-well, Admiral, I know I m-mentioned it b-b-b-but-"

"WELL, SWEET PEA." You grin as you hook an arm around Portland's shoulders. "Looks like you and me are gonna be partners from now on!"

And then Portland just faints.

"Oh my, I had no idea she was so exhausted!" The Admiral gasps.

"Don't worry, Admiral, I got her." You smile brightly.

Things were starting to get interesting now.
