Harper can't believe her eyes. Fourteen years she's been with the Interstellar Extraction Union. Fourteen years of being company. Of ten-week camps in vactents with nothing to show but IEU scrip. In her time she's pulled maybe twenty million credits' worth of precious substances from the wombs of a hundred worlds, but her concept of what a fortune looks like is obliterated by what she now sees beneath her.

"This belongs to the company."

Harper can't believe what she says. Every fiber of her soul wants to claim it. But she knows the rules. The Union owns the planet. They own the nightmares that the collapse unleashed. They own the power armor keeping Harper alive under the immense weight of this world's deepest atmospheres, and they own the river of treasure that flows half a kilometer below her flickering heads-up.

"This is not my concern," she says at last, her training clawing its way over the bewilderment. "I need to find my crew, find an elevator, and get tops-"
>>
"-iiiiide!"

The cliff, perhaps weakened by the quake which loosed the horror she slew and all its awful kin, gives way under the weight of Harper's power armor, crumbling before her heads-up can react.

As she feels her stomach lurch, she has time for one errant thought: I wonder if my power mallet will survive being submerged.

At 190 meters, she puts all her suit's reserve power into the arm that grips the power mallet and watches the countdown. A second scan of the cliff's surface shows it's too brittle, too weakened by the radiation spewing from the molten surface of the river. If she tried to anchor herself it would just send her tumbling out away from the face.

At 140 meters her heads-up scans it again.

At ninety meters, Harper's heads-up finds a seam harder than the rest, that runs like a root all the way to the submerged base of the cliff, and she drives the power mallet down at it, leveraging all her suit's weight against the servos in its arm. The suit holds, but what Harper wants desperately to know is if her heads-up's calculation was correct and the cliff can stop her fall.

Yeesh! That last scene took a tremendous amount of time to shoot. The set kept collapsing on me, and then when I finally got it stable enough to stand on its own long enough to take the shot, I discovered that juggling multiple lights and delicately-balanced minifigs is comically challenging.

These look pretty great, anon! You did a really good job getting down to the minifig level, shooting their faces in focus, and posing them!

I've been a Mad Max fan since the '80s, but I never got into the Fallout games, so I really wouldn't know what to do. I used to be hampered by lack of daylight until I invested in twenty bucks' worth of cheap pole lamps. Ironically, now shooting in daylight is harder because the way I've got my Lego room set up, I have to take extra steps to reduce the sunlight before I can shoot.

One of the reasons last night's game took so long was because during the shot of Harper falling, I thought it would be a good idea to stand her on top of a really, really, really long pole. Turns out a highly-flexible four-foot pole tends to bend a lot even before you put any extra weight on the end. Most of the time was spent perfecting an anchor that was wide, stable, and secure enough to hold Harper and the pole up without tipping over, but small enough that it would be obscured by the minifig.
>>
File: anchor plate.jpg (62 KB, 800x600)
62 KB
62 KB JPG
I ended up using an orange Duplo brick as the base with a setup that let the pole go into the Duplo stud. It was still a little wobbly, but I was able to get it still enough to take the shot.

Anyway, I'm going to go take a shower and eat some breakfast, and then try to figure out what the heck I'm doing with this. As far as I know I should have most of the day free, so the game should resume before too long.
>>
And I just now realized anon said "use autobore", not "use power mallet".

For a long minute Harper lies on the stone floor where she landed, unmoving and panting. Blocked by the thick walls, the radiation from the oranganium is minimal inside the tunnel, and she waits with shuddering breath until her suit's auto assists cycle back up.

When it does, she rises, easier now that the weight of her power armor is borne by the suit.

"It's online?" Harper asks her heads-up, and again, until she's satisfied that it isn't a glitch. Her heads-up begins happily flashing the piecemeal remains of the caverns, based on what its fractured computer system can determine. The number of living crew is tiny. She sees three from her own crew and her heart leaps. Colson, she thinks. Emery. That's good. She might be able to repair an elevator if we need it. And Valdez is with her.

A brief shade of worry flickers over Harper's face as her heads-up reports extreme levels of stress and stimshot output from Valdez's suit. "At least she's still alive," Harper says to herself, when the system catches on two more pings. Suits from a different crew.

With her power armor's batteries restored to their regular allocations, the force behind Harper's swing is enough to draw a flash of sparks as the metalloid chitin of the thing's inner mouth catches against the power mallet an instant before the shock wave fractures its jaw and liquefies its nervous system.

"Yaaaah!"

Colson's suit, made to work in tandem with her power driver, automatically closes the glove around the driver's handle the instant it detects it beginning to slip. In the event of a knockback where she might lose her grip on the job, this feature saves time and repairs, but when the creature bites down on the drive rod and flings its head backward, Colson finds herself hauled off her feet along with it.

She doesn't know if the thing understands that the driver isn't a meal, or if it's just systematically checking each thing it can fit in its mouth, but the horror shifts its attention to her, and a wave of pure terror passes over Colson as she actually feels her suit begin to give under the strain.

Colson frantically squeezes her power driver's release, and as she suddenly feels a tremendous vice close around her midsection and realizes that her skin is directly exposed to the titanic atmosphere of this place her heads-up gives her a simple statement.

CANNOT ENGAGE POWER DRIVER. REMOVE OBSTRUCTION.

Eep! That was a grim end for Colson! It's always hard writing in a main character's death, but the dice can be capricious.

I was planning on going a little farther, but this seems like a good place to stop for the night. I hope everybody had fun!

If you missed the first episode of Cleft 18, it's archived on suptg along with Deep Shaft 8 and most previous episodes:
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=lego%20quest

Now that we've seen a little more of them, I should get these ladies up on the wiki:

And if you follow me on Twitter, you'll get a tweet whenever a new episode starts or resumes:

Thanks for playing!

Here's a well-lit view of one of the critters in this week's episode. It has seven limbs, and each limb has four points of articulation. It also has a rotating plate so the head can turn from side to side as well as up and down.
