You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and your Ninth Division has been roused from sleep.

The morning of August 3rd started just after sunrise, with the clanging of alarms all throughout the Seireitei. You yourself didn't bother sleeping last night at all, instead standing vigil atop the roof of your empty office.

High above you, a bright ball of light collides with the protective dome high above the Seireitei. Rather than being destroyed, as it should by all rights be, the orb of light seems to suspend itself in the barrier itself... you realize that this is Kūkaku's work for certain. A canonball designed to penetrate the barrier around the Seireitei seems like it would have been a fun side project for her, but right now it's serving as the means of insertion for Kurosaki Ichigo and his classmates.

A high risk, high reward strategy to be sure. And it isn't long before you see the risk become reality.

The orb finally bursts, leaving a crackling gap in the barrier around where it had been suspended. As the barrier re-constitutes itself with an echoing sound like thunder, it sends several objects careening towards the ground. Each is engulfed in a white aura of reishi, like four falling comets.

One of these comets falls quite near your headquarters, provoking a loud cry from nearby shinigami who have rallied to intercept it. But this fearsome war-cry quickly dissipates into confusion, presumably as the shingiami responding to the unknown assailant find nothing at the site of impact. That's when a familiar feline presence makes itself known around your ankles.

"Well," Yoruichi grimaces, "that could have gone better."

“How does a cat grimace?” you wonder aloud.

Your partner chuckles to herself. “It's all in the tone, my dear.”

“So, who all are we dealing with here?” you ask, craning your head to spot anyone nearby who may be listening in.

“Kurosaki, Arisawa, Yasutora, Ishida, and Ganju,” Yoruichi explains succinctly, allowing you to work out that the fifth name is likely Shiba Ganju. So she did get help from your sister... you hope that won't come back to bite the Shiba in your collective ass later. Yoruichi's involvement in this whole mess can be written off by the Shihōin clan in the event that damage control becomes necessary later, but the more Shiba get involved the less able Kaoru will be to do the same.

Three comets, but five names... that means that someone's alone.

“Yasutora is the one who is alone,” Yoruichi informs you, seemingly guessing by the look on your face what you were considering. “Your one-time student Arisawa is with Ishida.”

“That's good,” you nod. “Between the two of them, they should be fine. Where do you reckon Yasutora came down?”

“I taught them how to hide their reiatsu,” Yoruichi admits, “so they may be difficult to locate that way. I'd imagine that when it's someone like Yasutora, thought, we'll be getting reports about him all day long.”

"Why's that?" you ask Yoruichi quizzically.

>August 3rd, shortly after sunrise
>8th Division territory

Yasutora Sado steps over the body of an unconscious shinigami, one of the handful who seem to have been stationed nearest where he fell after the cannonball designed by Shiba Kūkaku exploded. It seems he's alone for now.

The giant young man stoops low over his opponent, carefully examining his frame and uniform before glancing down at his own clothing: jeans and a tank top.

“Too small,” he determines, leaving the man where he fell. Someone would probably be along to collect him eventually.

Yasutora begins running towards a large, oddly shaped hill in the distance with a tower adjacent to it. He sticks to the alleyways where he can, and when he encounters one of the many dead-ends scattered around the neighborhoods of the Seireitei he merely punches his way through the obstacles.

If Ichigo is after someone named Rukia, who was apparently taken prisoner by the shinigami, he'll be trying to find her. And that hill and tower look like the execution grounds mister Yoruichi mentioned. So if Ichigo is trying to find this Rukia person, that's where he'll go. If he wants to meet up with Ichigo and the others, then that's where he should be going.

“I apologize,” the powerful boy mutters as he steps through a hole in yet another wall, “to whoever ends up repairing these walls.”

“So it seems one of the invaders has been encountered on Eighth Division's turf?” you ask, looking up from the brief written report Mirai has brought you, interrupting your morning coffee.

"That didn't take long."

“Yes, ma'am,” she bows slightly. “At least, they believe so based on the number of walls that have been mysteriously destroyed there.”

At the same time, you can tell there's trouble brewing elsewhere in the Seireitei even as your second pot of coffee bubbles away merrily across the room. A large number of spiritual powers are in the midst of a battle, with any individuals among them almost impossible to distinguish from here. It's entirely possible that one or more of Ichigo's group are being engaged there. Yoruichi, who has been lazily splayed across your desk, seems to perk her ears up as she feels the clash as well.

>I'll go investigate. Maybe I can tell where that invader is heading.

>Meanwhile...

“What the hell!?” Ichigo shouts in panic. “What's with you guys!?”

The Eleventh Division shinigami giving chase roar back various explanations that are too cacophonous to be picked apart individually. Predictably, most sound like some variation on the theme “because I wanna kill you”.

“Just keep running!” Ganju shouts as he runs alongside the orange-haired shinigami, arms and legs pumping madly to keep up the pace. “There, let's give 'em the slip up ahead!”

When the shinigami from the Eleventh turn the next corner into a new alleyway, they grind to a halt as they meet with another group from their own Division.

“Hey!” one shouts. “Back off, you bastards, we saw 'em first!”

“And then you morons nearly lost 'em!” a shinigami with a massive pompadour shouts back angrily. “They're ours now, losers!”

As the argument devolves into an all-out brawl, Ichigo grins down at them from a nearby rooftop.

“Well, I won't complain,” he shrugs. “Come on, Ganju. Let's leave the morons to it.”

“Take a squad to investigate the situation at the Eighth Division,” you order, sitting up straighter in your chair. “Also tell Rangiku I want her and Kai to check out the situation with the Eleventh Division. What I'm feeling can't be accounted for by three or four people fighting, so I'm suspecting one or more Divisions may be fighting among themselves.”

Mirai nods thoughtfully. “I will take my denreishinki, and call you with my report.”

“Tell Rangiku to do the same,” you add. “I want more information about what's going on out there before I commit myself personally.”

“Understood, Captain.”

Once Mirai is gone, Yoruichi stands, circles once, and flops back down on the desk after deciding it's not worth leaving her spot in the sun. “Taking things slow, I see?”

“None of those kids are going to job to an average shinigami,” you explain. “And as fast as you and I may be, we can only be in one place at once. We should save ourselves for when seated officers and Captains are getting involved.”

“Fair point,” Yoruichi allows, stretching out.

An hour later, the first report comes back in from Mirai.

“No contact so far, ma'am,” she reports. “It seems the invader has stopped simply blasting walls down and gone into hiding.”

Rangiku, on the other hand, has a much more definite and surprising report for you...

“What's wrong, Ichigo!?” Ikkaku crows, letting his zanpakuto Hozukimaru rest across his shoulders. “I thought you were gonna make me let go of my sword? What happened to all that tough guy talk?”

Ichigo rises to his feet, dripping blood from cuts on his forehead and his right wrist. But despite these obvious wounds and the pain they must be causing, the boy comes up with a smile.

“It took me a while, Ikkaku,” he retorts, holding out his left fist, “but I think I've finally got that weapon of yours all figured out.”

To illustrate the point, Ichigo allows a handful of red tassel to fall to the pavement in front of him. Only then does Ikkaku glance at the end of Hozukimaru's three-part shaft to discover it badly cracked and mangled. His eyes widen as he stares at Ichigo, who practically exudes confidence now.

“Get ready, Ikkaku,” Ichigo warns with a predatory grin. “I'd rather not kill you with this next attack, but whether you live or die... it's gonna be in your hands.”

“I'm coming.”

“You mean Madarame was defeated by one of the invaders?” you ask, incredulous. Even Yoruichi straightens up at the news.

Rangiku's tone confirms it. “Seems that way. He's been rushed to the Fourth Division medical center with serious wounds. So far he's refused to speak about the encounter to anyone.”

“I know the guy,” Kai adds. “He's been beaten by someone he approves of as a warrior, an' so he's not gonna talk much 'bout it. Figures it'd be sellin' the guy who beat him fair'n square out.”

“You figured you couldn't beat the quincy, so you attacked the girl?” Tatsuki growls, Ikkanzaka's fist brought to a dead stop by her outstretched hand. “Since when did you assume that I'm weaker than he is?”

Grabbing the much larger shinigami, the human martial artist manages to toss her assailant through the air like a ragdoll, sending him sailing in a high arc across their rooftop battlefield. Tiles are shattered, spraying ceramic shrapnel tumbling wildly through space as Ikkanzaka's massive body finally comes to a halt.

He manages to rise to his feet long enough to give the two human intruders a defiant shout. “You will never defeat me! I am the Kamaitachi, the greatest projectile user...”

Two arrows slam into the shinigami's chest, Uryū's shots physically lifting him into the air where Tatsuki's powerful kick blasts him off the roof. There's a noticeably lingering silence before they hear the thud of their opponent's body hitting the ground.

“I don't like the title,” Ishida shrugs, “but I like it even less in the hands of a coward like that. So I guess I'll be taking it.”

“That... didn't kill the guy, right?” Tatsuki asks nervously.

Ishida shakes his head. “It shouldn't have. Big guys like that can take a lot of punishment, but when he wakes up he's gonna find that I hit two of his spiritual pressure points.”

“From this defeat he'll never recover as a shinigami or as a swordsman. As it should be.”

Tatsuki peers down off the roof at Ikkanzaka, who has left something of a crater around where he slammed into the ground below.

“Agreed. Let's get out of here.”
>>
>>43773287

He deserved it, he is just lucky Tatsuki tossed him instead of going all out on him.

Besides, he proclaims himself as the greatest projectile user, when the 9th uses guns?

All talk.
>>
>>43773354
i still get the feeling that the 9th's gun brigade is snickered at for using guns because they haven't had a chance to demonstrate their capabilities.

If we do wind up having that sniper duel though, we should probably send reaper boy along to play with tatsuki so our gunman doesnt get ganked
>>
>>43773354
we use three man teams right? One with a gun for long range, one with a sword for when things get close, and then the third is a kido or spell user who acts as support right?

“Rangiku, pull out of that area and join up with Mirai,” you order. “I'll head out to the area where Eleventh is fighting personally.”

“Watch your back, Captain,” Rangiku replies. “Things are a mess out here, nobody seems to care who they're fighting in the slightest. At this rate, all of the Eleventh's going to wind up hospitalizing each other!”

Well, that doesn't sound good. Though you must admit that from Zaraki's squad you're absolutely not surprised they'd turn on each other so early in a crisis. That's just the sort of culture he promotes, the type of shinigami he recruits.

“I'm going,” you tell Yoruichi. “You coming?”

The black cat rises, leaping from the desk to your shoulder. “Why not. I have nothing better to do... after all, the Gotei 13 still think I'm out hunting, don't they?”

“Fair point,” you frown. “Well, let's get a move on. Wouldn't want Eleventh to have all the fun.”

You can hear the clashes long before you can see any of the combatants. Eleventh Division is indeed tearing itself apart, chasing phantom threats up and down the blind alleys of the Seireitei's lower districts and fighting each other along the way. A constant stream of casualties seem to me making their way out of the area and towards the Fourth Division, while a few relief squads seem to be braving the active combat to withdraw the more severely wounded patients. Along with the stubborn ones.

Nearby, you see a pile of wall rubble shifting. Someone's trapped under there!

You toss several large chunks of stone aside to reveal none other than Ayasegawa, from the Eleventh Division.

“Oh, Captain Shiba,” he coughs from the stone dust and dirt as he brushes himself off. “Apologies for my appearance, ma'am. One of the intruders... he... he...”

Ayasegawa's mounting agitation all but obliges you to ask what the intruder did to him.

“That graceless oaf blew me up with a firework!” he shouts angrily. “I'll never forgive...”

As he overexerts himself, he gives out under the weight of his injuries, collapsing to the ground in a heap. You can tell he's mortified.

“Tell me, where was this invader going?” you inquire. “Did you ever hear him mention his objective?”

“I do not know,” Ayasegawa coughs. “But I wouldn't put anything past him! Damn it...”

It seems that Ayasegawa's not holding anything back from you. He hates Ganju too much for that, for the intruder who nearly blew his face off with a bomb was almost certainly Ganju.

If Ayasegawa was his opponent, Ganju was almost certainly wounded. That means he'll be moving slowly, and won't have gotten too far away from this spot. And given the fact that Eleventh Division's forces have thinned out, it should be much easier for you to isolate Ganju's reiatsu, or even Ichigo's if need be.

You find them almost immediately, skulking through an alleyway not even two hundred meters from where you left Ayasegawa. The sight of you looking down at them disapprovingly is enough to freeze Ganju in his tracks. It's not even your reiatsu that's doing it, it's just that he knows he's in trouble.

“Hey, Ichigo,” he mutters. “Don't look now, but I think we're screwed buddy.”

“Why're you sayin'...” Ichigo begins, stopping mid-question as he turns to spot you.

“Ah, shit.”

From behind them you hear a startled shout.

“It's Captain Shiba!” the stringy-looking shinigami cries. “Oh man, oh god, oh man... this is bad. She's gonna kill me! You can't let her kill me she's even scarier than Captain Unohanaaaa!”

“Don't let Retsu hear you say that,” you grumble mutinously, not liking the young Fourth Division responder's tone. “She might take it personally.”

“Gah!” he shouts, falling to his knees and kowtowing. “I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I've been bad I'm so sorry!”

“That's pathetic,” Ichigo interrupts, booting the shinigami in the ass and knocking him over. “You gonna start acting like a man at some point, Hanatarō?”

“You must be whipped or somethin',” Ganju adds, scratching his ear idly. “I mean I haven't seen her fight in at least a century, but is she really that much of a bad...”

Ganju doesn't have time to finish the thought before your foot connects with his balls.

“Run,” he gasps from the floor. “I'll hold her off! Just run, your life depends on it!”

“Shouldn't that be “like” your life depends on it?” Ichigo asks, hefting Hanatarō over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes.

“No,” Ganju moans, struggling back to his feet.

“Well, let's see how you like this!” Ganju shouts, throwing a couple of red pepper bombs at you. But before they can go off you catch them out of the air and send them sailing in an almost suborbital arc out over the Seireitei. They burst high above in red clouds, dispersing harmlessly on the high-altitude winds while Ganju makes his next move.

With a shout he slings a pair of actual bombs at you, which come speeding towards you with lit fuses.

“Madja look!” he taunts.

But to his surprise the bombs bounce to the ground and roll, leaving their still-burning fuses to sputter out harmlessly at your feet. Ganju stares at you in abject horror.

“I...” he stammers. “I didn't even see you draw your sword!”

“A word of advice, nephew,” you growl. “Don't try that shit on a Lieutenant or a Captain, and avoid getting captured. If you do. It's a pain in the ass for the family.”

Still stunned, Ganju can only nod silently in agreement.

“Good, now get out of here,” you insist, grabbing him by the collar and flinging him with something approaching all of your strength in Ichigo's direction. Despite the distance, you think you can even hear the startles shouts as they collide.

“Good shot,” Rosa compliments you. “I suppose your aim hasn't gone wholly to shit after all.”

“Was that wise?” Tenkotsuki questions you as Ichigo and Ganju seemingly disappear from your senses: probably too heavily suppressed and too far to be distinguished anymore, like the rest of their companions.

“Probably not,” you admit. “But this way he at least has a chance of not getting caught again.”

With nothing further to occupy your time here, you make for Rangiku and Mirai's location. You have to follow the denreishinki's map feature to get the approximate bearings, but once you start getting closer you can clearly feel them. Seems they're not in battle at all.

After a few minutes you find the two of them speaking with Captain Kyōraku. Shunsui seems relaxed enough, but his Lieutenant Nanao looks a little tenser than usual.

“What's his problem?” Yoruichi mutters quietly in your ear before you're within earshot. Holy shit, you practically forgot she was shadowing you this whole time!

“So that's the story, Sir.” Rangiku finishes, apparently having explained something to Shunsui.

It's then that he notices you, or rather pretends he didn't notice you coming until just then. “Oh, Lady Riku! How fortunate. I was just explaining to your lovely subordinates here that they appear to have wandered into my Division's area!”

“I know,” you reply calmly. “The Ninth Division is responsible for security in the entire Seireitei.”

“I wasn't aware that gave you authority to operate here!” Shunsui ripostes, rubbing the back of his neck. “Perhaps it's my mistake?”

He doesn't think it's his mistake at all, and he does have a point. Sending two of your officers here with a squad was on somewhat shaky grounds rules-wise.

>Surely you can overlook something like this, Shunsui.

“You probably have a point,” you admit. “It's just that I feel really strongly about keeping these intruders alive. They're just kids, after all.”

Shunsui nods quietly, taking your words in. “I know how you feel. I mean, it's not like the Quincy invasion. There's only what, four of them at best? Maybe five? And other than a couple of walls and some broken bones, the haven't done all that much damage.”

Though Rosa rankles at the reminder of the Quincy invasion, you're now confident you have a way to make inroads with Shunsui. You step in closer to speak to him in a lower voice. “They're humans, right? We have no business condemning them to die when they're hardly a threat to the Soul Society. Or do you disagree?”

“I don't,” Shunsui admits wearily, giving Yoruichi's ear a nonchalant scratch as she sits on your shoulder trying to act as much like a cat as she can. “I get what you're driving at, Captain. If it were almost anyone else I'd have my doubts about your sincerity, but because it's you I'll leave this intruder alive and pass them off to you when they're captured. Sound okay to you?”

“That's all I really wanted,” you tell him. “I'll withdraw my unit. And thanks for the vote of confidence, by the way.”

“Don't mention it!” Shunsui laughs, before his face turns serious again. Or at least what passes for serious with him. “No, really. I don't want the Old Man thinking I've gone soft.”

As you're about to leave, a messenger finds Shunsui: the typical garb and silly hat of the Onmitsu communications unit.

“Ma'am!” he addresses you. “It's good you're here as well. This is a message to all Captain and Lieutenant level shinigami in the Seireitei regarding the fate of the criminal Kuchiki Rukia.”

“Well?” you growl. “Spit it out.”

“Yes, ma'am. Kuchiki Ruki has been found guilty of an illegal transfer of shinigami powers to a human, and has been sentenced to execution. Use of the Sōkyoku has been approved. Head Captain Yamamoto has also called a Captains' meeting for tomorrow morning. That is all.”

>is me, because I'm dumb

As the sun sets, Renji stares wildly at the young human who has pressured him so hard on two occasions now. Bloodied and tattered, his breathing harsh and ragged, it's a miracle Ichigo can even stand with the severity of his wounds. But the reiatsu he's producing is even more miraculous.

“How much stronger are you gonna get!?” Renji demands, thrusting Zabimaru straight ahead in a vicious, long-range attack. Ichigo sidesteps and keeps coming.

“When you dodge, you don't let yourself get cut!” Ichigo declares loudly as a second, scything attack comes towards him from above. He manages to avoid it as deftly as the last one as Ganju and Hanatarō stare in awe.

“When you protect someone, you don't let 'em die!” The third swing of Zabimaru's blade is disrupted easily by a simple rotating movement of Ichigo's talon-like zanpakuto. Renji's eyes go wide as his assailant raises the blade in his hand high above his right shoulder. The younger man's eyes burn a fierce blue with killing intent, the ferocity of which is only matched by the ferocity of the blue energy building in the wide space along the spine of his blade.

“And when you attack,” Ichigo concludes, his blade seemingly lowering as his left hand finds the spine. “Kill!”

In a flash of blue Renji is propelled backwards. He doesn't even have time to scream as a large chunk of his shoulder near the base of his neck is ripped apart, and his back slams hard into the stony base of the tower where he chose to make his stand. Zabimaru itself has been torn asunder, and blood stains the wall behind him.

“Rukia...” he gasps softly, struggling to even manage that single word. With a tear lingering in the corner of his eye, borne of frustration, anger, and pain in equal measure, Renji collapses.

Unlike his opponent, the Lieutenant shows no signs of getting up any time soon.

You choose not to mention the fact that Renji has just fallen in battle with Ichigo. You didn't think it possible that he could grow this quickly... it's even faster than your own learning curve was, and that's simply stunning. Yoruichi hops off your shoulder, saying nothing. She doesn't need to. At this point you're as worried about Ichigo's long-term prospects as she clearly is, and you might be tempted to go chasing after him too if it wouldn't raise any issues with Shunsui.

“So this is bullshit, right?” you ask Shunsui, trying to distract yourself from the distant feeling of unfolding drama. “Cause it smells like bullshit.”

“The Central 46 is within their rights to execute a shinigami,” Shunsui observes. “And the crime Rukia was accused of is quite serious.”

“It's inconsistent,” you argue. “When Urahara Kisuke was accused of hollowfying a bunch of Captains and Lieutenants, he was brought before the Central 46 to face his accusers. When he was punished, he wasn't sentenced to death... and certainly not by the Sōkyoku.”

Shunsui shakes his head skeptically. “So what are you tryin' to say here, Lady Riku?”

“That the Central 46 is breaking its own apparent rules for this,” you explain. “Doesn't it strike you as suspicious that they'd seem so driven to kill off a Seated Officer who's done nothing to threaten the Soul Society?”

“I assume you appealed her capture?” Shunsui asks.

You nod. “I did. Denied, as you probably guessed.”

“It does sound odd when you put it that way,” Shunsui admits as you come to a halt in front of the First Division. Rangiku and Mirai swiftly catch up with you.

“My, they're faster than I'd imagined!” Shunsui compliments them. “Not even out of breath?”

“We learned from the best,” Rangiku grins at you. “We'll wait for you here, Captain.

Gonig to add on since I was still thinking when writing that
> It is complete and utter bullshit. If at worst case I fear that central 46 may be compromised, Or that they've become to corrupt.
>>
>>43776166
Essentially this + the fact they've come to the conclusion too fast.

Everything is circumstantial. But could we at least get someone to monitor central 46. Hold off the sentence for a while, see what's going on. If he's not satisfied with the results, she can be executed that day.
>>
>>43776200
Add this on to the end of >>43776166
Because it's actually true and scary, Central 46 are slow as fuck usually.
>>
>>43776076
It seems odd that the central 46 is so determined to kill a noble for a comparatively minor crime in a manner totally inconsistent with past punishments for serious crimes. Compared to Kiskue Urahara, or Tessia, neither of whom where sentenced to death?
Hell, when was the last time a noble actually got arrested by the central 46 for anything? They usually look after their own quite well.
Also, given that the human in question just wrecked a LT with Shinigami powers that he should no longer have, I think that we haven't proven that the person Rukia gave powers to was human in the first place.
>>
>>43776076
Well it's tricky, like we REALLY need to consider our audience here.

There is something wrong with the Central 46 actions.

They have been plain inconsistent with their actions. It seems inconsistent with prior rules in the past, and the ways these rulings have come down do lead to issues in the future.

If the law is applied inconsistently like this it raises questions of the whole legimency of their rules and laws. The maggots nest and other jails exist for a reason, however their willingness to execute shinigami like this is troubling. Loss of faith and trust in them is something even they should be aware of.

Rukia's circumstances should have been considered also, there was something weird about the whole chain of events too that led to the transfer. She had a choice of transfer, or allow herself to die, the human to die and the humans sisters to die also.

The powers were purged from the human also so that should be case closed.
>>
The timing of this decision, inconsistent and arbitrary as it is, together with these children's prison break, show that some plot is underway. The Central 46 is acting directly against its own rule of law and interests.
>>
>>43776309
I agree but we HAVE to suggest a compromisable alternative.

He doesn't want to have to directly confront 46.

However, if we can delay it until we can prove 100% something's off, it should be enough.
>>
>>43776253
>Hell, when was the last time a noble actually got arrested by the central 46 for anything? They usually look after their own quite well.
This will probably appeal to the Old Man quite well, given the Bakkoto incident he was involved in.

>>
>>43776351
This plus the fact Rukia's noble family is still in relative high esteem with other families.

Plus the fact her brother caught her.

But beyond that are all the other factors in play.
A decision just as an "invasion" began? Would imply that Central 46 feels the invasion and Rukia are completely related, but we haven't told them all the details yet connecting those two things.

It implies that a schedule has been pushed forward, but for what purpose should be scrutinized before acting upon the orders.
>>
>>43776300
Yeah, I get it now. I guess it was the fact that the flowers were coloured but the hair was just shaded, made me think that it was supposed to be portraying dark hair.

It's a nice piece nonetheless.

>>
>>43776628
hey queen where did the technique of giving ones powers to a human first come from. It would be odd for that technique to be known if the central 46 was going to set the precedent of it being so blatantly illegal. ( probably to late for this to influence the post I know)

“The Central 46 is known for a lot of things, not the least of which is its bureaucratic nature,” you tell Yamamoto. “I've done the dirty work more so than anyone save Lady Yoruichi, and possibly Suì Fēng. I know how this process works. They may seem inscrutable at times, but they follow their own twisted logic.”

Yamamoto seems to be listening intently, so you continue. “When was the last time a noble was arrested for anything, let alone handed such a harsh penalty for a crime that in no way threatened the Soul Society? She saved a human family's lives at immense personal risk, and for that she's to be executed?”

“The Maggots' Nest and the Onmitsukidō exist for a reason, so clearly they didn't just want to make her disappear. But they also didn't see fit to follow protocol and bring her to face a list of crimes and evidence. Even Urahara got THAT much of a courtesy, and his crime apparently wasn't enough to get him executed.”

“You are suggesting that the Central 46 is acting irregularly?” he replies quietly, surprising Shunsui with the calmness of his reaction. Apparently he expected a lecture about following the rules... to be honest, you expected that much as well. But since he's expecting further explanation instead, that's what you decide to give him.

“I am,” you declare, now confident that for once you've made some inroads with the old man. “It may be circumstantial, but I've never known the Central 46 to handle things with this sort of sustained disregard for their own interests and precedents.”

“Do you suspect a conspiracy?” the Head Captain asks.

You nod solemnly. “I do, sir.”

“Do you have any further information upon which I could base a decision?”

>No, sir.

I can let you know that Aizen's Zanpakto is an illusion type, as the god of the sword has let me know.

Additionally, I have reason to believe they destroyed the gigai for a reason. Why destroy evidence off the bat?

You'll have to investigate discreetly yourself. Any more information from me directly may have consequences.

Also is Aizen watching? There's no way we aren't being tailed in some way.

“Tenkotsuki?” you ask softly. “Can you sense anything amiss?”

“I can,” she tells you after a moment of silence. “Your Head Captain is almost certainly under Aizen's influence, though not his active control. At least not at this moment, the situation could change at any moment.”

“He may just be asleep,” Rosa suggests. “Even he's gotta do it at some point. Or maybe there are limits to how he can use it? Maybe he needs to know what his victim is seeing in order to devise a way to fool their senses?”

“It could be any combination of those factors,” Tenkotsuki agrees.

You nod, silently thanking your swords for their help. “Head Captain, are you familiar with the Ryūkyūan aphorism “Aizen's sword is an illusion type”?”

The Head Captain's eyes widen as he digests the new information... apparently the old coot's taken some time to learn the other common languages throughout the Japanese archipelago. “I am not,” he lies. “You will have to clarify your meaning, Captain.”

“It means to take things on faith,” you spin your own lie, hoping that even if Aizen can somehow hear what you're saying you've outfoxed him with this ploy. For his part, the Head Captain seems to have realized what your revelation has implied about Urahara's innocence in the hollowfication incident.

“I have to ask you to trust me. I can prove everything, but my hands are tied in such a way that I cannot convincingly make my argument without catching the conspirators red-handed.”

“I see,” Yamamoto replies sternly, regaining control once more. “So that is your intent?”

“It is.”

“Then I am afraid I cannot do much to help you,” Yamamoto replies, a faint trace of disappointment in his gravelly voice. “However I will look into the matter independently. I will also be willing to overlook your actions in pursuing your ends, to a certain extent."

“Thank you for your time, sir,” you bow gently. “Sorry to keep you up.”

“Captain!” he interrupts you as you turn to leave, forcing you to spin a full 360 degrees on your heel.

“Sir?”

In a bizarrely comic gesture, the Old Man points at himself with his right index finger... he's silently asking you if Aizen's sword has affected him. You nod just as silently, to a look of absolute rage from the Head Captain. Damn are you glad not to be Aizen right now.

“Damned whelp,” Yamamoto mutters, turning to leave for his quarters. “No respect for his seniors.”

The morning of August 4th, aside from the impending execution of your Sixth-seat officer, is remarkably less interesting than yesterday morning. Along with your coffee, you read a series of notes compiled last night by Shūhei: after-action reports and casualty figures, mostly.

The Eleventh Division at last count was operating at less than half capacity, mostly due to blue-on-blue actions. Ikkanzaka from Seventh Division has been listed as a casualty, having apparently lost his shinigami powers to a human. Sadly, no plans to execute him have been announced as of yet.

Madarame and Ayasegawa are out of action for the next few days, with Ikkaku's wounds apparently having proven less severe than initially feared. It seems his assailant took the time to apply a salve that stopped the most severe of his bleeding on the spot, likely saving his life. Less fortunate was Renji, who has been imprisoned by Byakuya as he's being treated for extensive injuries to his shoulder. Apparently a projectile of spiritual energy with immense piercing power nearly ripped his arm off.

That Ichigo's kind of a terrifying kid. You can understand now how people used to feel about you and Gin, and to a lesser degree Rangiku.

Other injuries are less widespread or severe. A few of Eighth Division's seated officers seem to have been beaten by Yasutora, but aside from that it's mostly been property damage. You suspect he may be doing it out of stubbornness at this point.

All of the intruders so far remain at large.

You head down to the kitchen and gather together a few things to take to Rangiku, since she can't have had a proper breakfast before going to the meeting. Coffee in a cup, waffles, scrambled eggs, and honest to god bacon all in a series of little boxes wrapped with fabric. The works. Only the best for your only daughter.

Your Commandos spare a series of amused glances as they see you leave with the food.

“You never bring me breakfast,” Shūhei smirks.

You shrug. “Wait around for eighty more years, maybe I'll get around to it eventually.”

The Lieutenants' meeting was scheduled for the First Division Headquarters, where Sasakibe usually holds these events. Whenever they occur, at least. Strange, there seem to be several strong spiritual pressures here. One of them seems particularly agitated.

When you turn a corner, following a high catwalk between two towers, you're treated to a grisly spectacle. Several Lieutenants, including Rangiku, are stood around a body slumped against a nearby wall. The deceased shinigami was apparently slammed into the wall above his present location with massive force, enough to damage the wall itself. Blood has trailed down the wall from where his back slid against it when he fell, and is pooling around his corpse.

Looking more carefully reveals a mild-featured face framed by familiar, dorky glasses.

“Aizen?” you ask aloud, staring in disbelief. No, that can't be right. There's no way.

Lieutenant Hinamori, whose sword has been drawn and up until this point has been staring at Rangiku, rounds on you after hearing your voice.

Rangiku seems alarmed. “Captain! She's...”

“It was you!” Hinamori roars through her tears, cutting off any further explanation your daughter planned to give you. You can tell what she's planning to do, and your own eyes widen.

But the illusion is not on the body but on those that view it. Not that Riku knows it.

Didn't Aizen use illusions to make people see him up there when he wasn't?

What exactly happened, and why are we seeing it?

You simply swat her attack aside, completely unwilling to engage her in this silliness.

“Thing about trace reiatsu is,” you explain to the other Lieutenants who have until now seemed uncertain whether or not they should intervene, “it's finicky. Release of a zanpakuto belonging to a Lieutenant or higher is sufficient to eliminate such traces from a crime scene, making it impossible to determine the individual responsible.”

As you kneel to check “Aizen” and his pulse, Rangiku is forced to hold Hinamori back as she screams about you.

“Captain Aizen told me about her!” she insists loudly. “He said Captain Shiba was a quincy in life! One of the Sternritter! Look at how he's been killed, that was no sword wound!”

“It could have been a lot of things,” you reply calmly. “Hadō #4, for instance, or certain kidō-based zanpakuto. We won't know until a proper autopsy has been performed.”

“Lieutenant Iba,” you announce, “please inform my Division that they need to dispatch a forensic team. Lieutenant Kotetsu, please bring a Fourth Division team as well.”

“It seems that there is no illusion active here,” Tenkotsuki tells you, just as astonished as you are. “It would appear that Captain Aizen has been killed.”

Hinamori is a sobbing mess. Rangiku seems absolutely at a loss for what to do. And Aizen, to the absolute best of your knowledge, is lying dead on the floor in front of you.

You down the cup of coffee you brought for your daughter. This is going to be a long day.

There was no other information on what was happening. Whomever it was likely just stepped into Aizen plan, in his place.

There are a lot of things in real world that would make a person appear dead. My theory is that Aizen is faking it and has only gone to these lenghts because of Riku. The moment she lays eyes off of him he will wake up and switch with an illusion. Just my 2 cents.

Little extreme, but I can see Shunsui coming to some bad conclusions based on his understanding of the exchange between Riku and Yamamoto.

That said, I don't think he'll jump to declaring Riku excommunicate traitoris.

Riku is stuck playing things by ear currently too.

Also, this is just Riku looking at his corpse, not like an exhaustive forensic examination either.

Somehow Momo was gotten to by Aizen despite serving in gins division.

Aizen is anything but a normal shinigami.

>>
Whi here thinks Orihime is a big upcoming plot twist?
>>
>>43779610
Well, it's not a secret anymore. Until Momo just shouted it out for everyone to hear, it was just a few very specific people who knew that Riku was a Quincy before she died.
>>
>>43779620
So, exile arc? This could be a great deal of fun.
>>
And get a blind guy to touch the body just in case!
>>
nah, let's say kisuke put the hogie in rukia's gigai. It's been destroyed, so Aizen already has it.

There are other gods running around, and some of which oppose us. Who is to say one of them didn't offer to teach Aizen how to use the stone?

Now he faked his death and is doing his butterfly thing, we'll be facing hogie-aizen.
