Recently: You won your second league match against a psychic who was trying to peak in your brain. Your darker, inner self took advantage of the situation and stole your ability to mega-evolve with your Pokemon except for Raistlin.

General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.

Write-ins for all votes or always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as it comes up.

Combat involves rolls! Once there's a clear winner, we roll for the move accuracy/crit/secondary effect. Usually it's just three 1d100s. Sometimes you can get a modifier from circumstances, so be creative! Add flair, do tricks with moves, mess with terrain, whatever!

Call me out on a mistake and receive an apology butt or suggestive picture.

After the match, you and your friends look around for Selina. You toss Sneasel’s Pokeball over to Vance. You’ve congratulated the little bugger a few times, but you really have to do something special for him later to show how impressed you are.

You only explain the barest of details about Selina, since time is a factor. She’s already vanished into the crowds around the arena. Vendors, trainers, fans, officials and all other sorts of people and their Pokemon talk, work, and play, creating a shifting maze.

It’s your element though. Your home town is small, but it had it’s share of alleys and crowds. You guide your friends quickly.

It’s Jeanine that leads the way to Selina, though. She’s using those crystals from the ruins. “I just looked for the most rattled aura. Speaking of,” her volume lowers, “ Kat, yours is... is...”

“It’s what?”

“Cracked? No. More like, an infection or a sickness or something. No, not like that either. I can’t explain it. It’s like an extra voice. An echo..” Her eyes fall to your bag where you keep your Pokedex. “Maybe more than one.”

Clair rolls her eyes. “Aura reading. Psh. I think I’d know if there were someone else around. What, you think Kat is haunted or something now?”

Jeanine takes Clair in a headlock and noogie's her hair. “I'm being serious, there’s something weird going on.”

Clair tries to retort, but she’s got a mouthful of boob.

Vance points to Selina across the way, ignoring or not noticing the conversation. “There she is! We’re going to lose her.”

Jeanine frees Clair and you all chase.

“I could do the same thing to you, you know!” Clair huffs and subtly gestures to her chest. “Right, Kat?”

You’re too busy to answer. “Selina! Wait up!”

She turns back. Her eyes are red. They go just a little wide seeing you and your friends run up to her. “W-What do you want?”

You ask her how she’s feeling after her trip in your head.

She takes in Vance and Jeanine. “I uhh, don’t know what you’re talking about. I don’t want any trouble. You won, okay? Let’s just move on.”

Vance looks a little offended at the implication. He holds up a finger and opens his mouth, but stops himself and gives some space instead. “Unbelievable. Even psychics pigeonhole me as a thug.”

Jeanine consoles him, calling him her gentle, sensitive giant.

“It’s okay,” you tell her. “Nobody is looking to start any trouble.”

Robin folds her arms and does her best to look intimidating. It’s adorable. “W-we’ll see about that! You h-hurt my girlf-friend!”

You tell Robin it’s fine. She backs off. With Oberon, he could have killed you and she lost her mind. This is much lower in scale. Somehow, Robin gets so much more embarrassed confronting a human too.

She rubs her arm. “Look. I just tried to do good by my Pokemon. You have this crazy ability to mega-evolve Pokemon. I even heard there’s a trainer with an artificial eye that can see all sorts of stuff. I'm just leveling the playing field.”

You give Clair a nod. She can read your expression without reading your mind. You want her to take over.

Clair steps forward. “That’s different. You weren't just peaking, you were using a technique to change her mind. That’s dangerous.”

“I was?” Selina steps back. “What do you know about this? Who are you?”

Clair makes the same finger pointing gesture as Vance, except she doesn't hold her tongue. She lays into the girl, hard. Apparently she’s never been formally trained. From what you glean from the conversation, she was a late bloomer. She’s nowhere near Clair’s level, but pretty impressive.

Selina can take a lecturing without taking it personally, and Clair can lecture for a long time. Finally, she gets exhausted from it.

“I told the league they needed a countermeasure to this sort of thing. They said psychics are too rare for it to be an issue.”

“Are we really rare?” It’s an innocent question.

“Well, there are a few more people with a little potential, but next to nobody who can do anything in any practical sense like you or me. We’re probably the only two on the island that can do what we do. My old human tutor didn't even live in the region.”

“So, they were right, then. About it being too rare, I mean.”

Clair glares at her for a second, then goes back into lecture mode again. “But this is proof it can happen!”

You have a couple hours before Robin’s match.

Train Destiny to switch abilities based on flute calls.

Speaking of abilities, what kind of time investment would be required if we wanted to grant a pokemon contrary as an ability? 3 months same as before? Would their previous training have an impact on the time? Would the ability they learn matter? Would certain abilities be too broken? (Like moody, for instance)

You’ll look into your next opponent in a minute.

You elbow Clair, accidentally pressing it into her chest. She jumps, then gives you a knowing look and speaks under her breath. “Finally noticed, huh? Well control yourself. Not in publ-”

You cut her off. “So, another psychic, huh? You guys going to get up to anything freaky?”

She harumphs. “I'm not just into anybody, you know. I only want to be noticed by a very select few people. On that note, I'm done being subtle. Check out my awesome huge-”

“Selina,” you pipe up loud enough for her to hear. ”I wanted to ask you something. Why’d you throw in the towel?”

She looks down. “I knew where it was headed. Sigilyph didn't stand a chance. Your Sneasel was buffed and the perfect counter. I didn't even know you had one.” She sighs. “I didn't want to humiliate my Pokemon in front of the crowd like that.”

You don’t feel it’s your place to comment. You just nod. “Well, if you ever want a rematch after the league, let me know.”

She brightens up. “Maybe I will. Thanks.” She hesitates. “So, uh, no hard feelings?”

You shrug.

Clair and Selina exchange some contact information. Clair wants to teach her on using her powers less dangerously. “Good luck. I’ll be rooting for you. RIght now though, I,” she yawns, “I need to get some sleep.”

It’s the middle of the day, but you've seen how tired Clair gets when she pushes her powers. Selina does look exhausted. You wave as she leaves, then pinch Clair and Robin’s butts, just for fun. They both jump.

“Clair, I didn't even notice until now.”

She smiles smugly and flips one of her twintails behind her back. “It’s about time.”

“Your butt is super tight. You’ve been working out, haven’t you?”

You leave to the Pokemon center to check out your next opponent. She chases behind. The others follow too.

You see your next opponent on the screen. It’s a kid a little younger than you. His clothes look like they’re from another region. He’s also in the room too, and on seeing you, he approaches.

“Hi, I'm Richie.” His fingerless gloved hand extends out. You instinctively shake it. “Looks like we’ll be opponents in two days. Nice to meet you.”

“Kat,” you say warmly. You get a good feeling from this kid. Still, you don’t want to quite let your guard down just yet. “Nice to meet you.”

“I've been in a few different tournaments before. Eighth place last time. Usually after the first two rounds, things really heat up. Most people just want to test themselves and their Pokemon and just go as far as they can. Some people make it ugly though.”

You smile and nod. “Yeah. I can see that.”

He gives an understanding look. “Yeah. I don’t like that. Or all the cloak and dagger stuff, really. I just want to battle. So, here.” He offers a card. “It’s all of my Pokemon. Their species and abilities, and even where we met!”

You keep your eyes off of it for a second. Is he serious? “But, why?”

“I hope I’m not coming off as arrogant. It just doesn’t matter to me. Most of it is information you could probably find out anyway. I just don’t like all the distrust and games, or being followed and looking over your shoulder. I want to show my Pokemon with pride.”

He sounds genuine, but it could be a trap.

[Some abilities, like those exclusive to a single Pokemon, can't be done. Or at least, not in any realistic timeline. Contrary is a pretty rare and powerful one, and would probably take a full three months with help from someone like Vernon. Moody too. "Why? You got anything to hide?" You joke.

He laughs nervously. “No. I mean, there’s nothing to find, is all.” He lists off the time of his matches. “I used a few tricks in those matches, but nothing I need to hide.”

“Uh huh,” you keep from saying much more than that. “Well, relax, okay? I promise I won’t research you.”

He nods. “Well, anyway, there’s a great place to train I know about. It’s not far from here. Want to meet there tomorrow morning?”

“Sure,” you tell him. “It’ll be fun.”

He heads off. As you watch him leave, you notice that your friends are talking with...wait! That’s Vance and Clair’s parents! Giorgio and Lorraine!

“Robin! Kat!” They make their way to you. “You look like you’ve been through hell.” Giorgio pokes your arm. “Took a nasty hit, have you?” You barely feel it anymore. It flared up a little when he touched it though. It’s amazing that he could tell, your arm is covered. “It’s my job to see how people are doing physically,” he answers the question on your face.

“Dad!” Vance complains.

“Oh Giorgio, now really. Leave the poor girl be.”

Giorgio chooses to not hear them and keeps his focus on you. “You were in the car crash with Vance, right? He didn’t mention you were hurt too.”

Their mom turns to you too. “That’s right. I thought it was just Vance and Jeanine.”

Vance’s eyes go wide. His bruising from his run-in with Team Imperium is all but gone. Looks like he told his parents a different story so they wouldn’t worry.

“Unrelated to the crash. I got this from punching a Garchomp in the face.”

They look back to Vance. “You should have told us about that too. We would have sent her a care package too!”

Lorraine uses spit to clean some dirt off your face. “You punched a dragon Pokemon? Didn’t I tell you kids to be safe?” She finishes with you and starts cleaning Clair’s face, ignoring her protests. “Really, Vance, you need to take better care of your girlfriends.”

“Moooooom! That was just a joke she made before!”

Giorgio lifts your sleeve and looks at your arm. “Welp, sure looks like something like that. That’s the most insane thing I’ve ever heard of.”

They ask you all sorts of questions about your fistfight with a Garchomp. It seems to take up all of their focus.

“In any event, Kat, we wanted to let you know the gym is doing very well. Your dividends should be coming in shortly.”

“Hey! That’s great news!”

They pat you on the back. “Thank you for being so patient. I know it took a little longer than intended.”

You hadn't really given it much thought. “It’s fine. No problem.”

They go into a bunch of business stuff that makes no sense to you. They insist on giving you the details, since you’re the largest shareholder next to them. You look to Robin and she just mouths that there’s nothing to worry about.

Jeanine graciously saves you from the talk. “Oh! Look at the time! Robin! Your match is on!”

Lorraine hugs and smothers all of you one last time. She hands Vance a bag. “I won’t say what’s in there, but you be careful with your girlfriends. I mean it, mister!” She mouths the word ‘condoms’.

“Mooooooom!”

“Ew!” Clair protests. Vance just gives her a look. She’s the last person that should talk about having more than one partner.

You all rush to the arena. The parents say they’ll watch from a lobby. They don’t like the crowds.

This time though, a guard stops Robin before she can get in. “I’ll need to see some ID.”

She gives her trainer card. He takes a very, very long time inspecting it. You look at the clock. She’s running late.

“Can’t you hurry this up?”

He keeps very slowly inspecting the card.

Clair squints. “He’s stalling intentionally. He's been paid.”

You glance over at Clair. She sighs, knowing what you’re thinking. She agrees.

“Now, just one mor-” He stops mid sentence. “More... Umm. Uh. Sorry, what were we talking about again?”

“You were saying Robin’s card checks out and she should hurry.”

He blinks and shakes his head. “That’s right. Go on. Hurry.”

Robin takes her cue and runs down the hall to her match.

Somehow, you feel like you avoided some major trouble. You head to your seats.

“Good thing that guy was idiot.” Clair wipes some sweat from her brow. “Great, now I’m a hypocrite for lecturing Selina, and I’m going to be all tired. I get cranky when I’m tired.”

Vance gives her an incredulous look. “When you’re tired?”

Jeanine stops either of them from fighting. Siblings.

You all settle in to watch the match.

Robin throws out her Pokeball ahead of the timer. It’s Golem.

Her opponent puts away their first Pokeball, and throws out a different one instead. It’s a Venusaur.

“Kat.”

You glance to your left. Robin’s mom winks over her sunglasses.

“Violet,” you greet her.

“You’re looking good, Kat. Have you been working out?” Her eyes linger over you. She gives a half smile before kissing the air. “Oh, don’t be so uptight dear. I’m not that old.”

“What do you want?”

“The simple truth is, you interest me, Kat. You’re not like other trainers. Sure, Robin is crafty. But you, you have passion. You have a willingness to win that goes beyond others. You’re willing to risk more. Go farther.”

“I’m flattered,” you keep your eyes on the match.\

“You’re so cold,” she fakes a shiver. “I’m just trying to be...friendly.”

“She’s not interested in your friendship,” Clair says from your right. Apparently she somehow heard that.

“You want to go, lady? You think I'm afraid of you?” Clair taps her head.

Violet smiles. “Oh, what a silly little crutch you have. Go ahead. See what good that does you.”

Clair hesitates. She reaches for a Pokeball instead. “Maybe you want to settle this with a match.”

The champion laughs and covers her mouth. “That is adorable. But...now that you mention it, that may prove useful.” She taps her chin. “Very well, let’s battle. The old league training room is locked up. We won’t be disturbed.” She produces a key.

“Great!” You see a bead of sweat roll down Clair’s face. “Let’s go! Right now!” She's almost imperceptibly shaking. She challenged her without thinking.

“Clair’s not falling for that. Nice try. Plus, are you seriously gonna skip watching your own daughter just to remind everyone, once again, that you didn't become the Pokemon Champion without earning it?”

Violet leans back. “She’s the one that challenged me.” She seems to have two modes. One is a fancy women who sees everything as beneath her, the other is pouty, playful child. This was pouty child.

"Everybody sit down and shut the fuck up, Robin's match is on."

Clair sighs in relief. You rarely see fear on her face.

The Venusaur uses Sunny Day. Golem hits it with Flamethrower. It’s moving with an unnatural speed and agility. Only when it’s hit with a gras move is it revealed to be her Zoroark. It counters with a second Flamethrower, then a third as her opponent switches to Carbink to absorb the blow.

Robin has Zoroark hit it with Taunt. It looks like she guessed wrong though. Her opponent goes on the offensive with Moonblast. Zoroark is out.

Robin sends her Gyarados out. It growls in a lower, more even-tempered tone than yours. You can tell from it’s body language and the way it explicitly exposes it’s back a certain way that it trusts Robin deeply. It shrugs off Power Gem after Power Gem as Robin has it use Rain Dance, then Dragon Dance. She waits right up until the Taunt wears off before striking back.

And boy does it strike hard. Her Gyarados moves like a snake along the ground, stay low right up until it’s time to strike. This gives it a distinct advantage on dodging, not that she needs it. It takes the Carbink out with a single Aqua Tail. Her opponent sends out Electrode.

The crowd gasps. Even with Dragon Dance, the Electrode moves quicker. They must have trained long and hard to get that kind of speed.

There’s something bugging you about her Gyarados. It looks different than before. It’s posture is so alien. The way it moves is so...different. It’s ability isn’t Moxie or Intimidate. What is it?

There’s a kickup of water as Thunder strikes Gyarados. Gyarados thrashes strangely, throwing up obscuring rainwater. You don’t see it perform the move clearly, but there’s no doubt it uses Earthquake to take Electrode out of the fight.

“Amazing! It looked like Thunder connected, yet Gyarados was still able to take the hit and counter with an attack on it’s own!”

Very quickly, Robin retrieves her Gyarados and sends Zoroark back out to take on the Venesaur. She winds handily.

“Tell her I say hi,” the champ says before slipping off.

You and your friends run down to congratulate Robin. She seems overwhelmed at the praise but tries to accept it graciously.

“Way to go,” you put your arm around Robin. “Gyarados is really well trained.”

She laughs shyly. “We worked really hard this summer. I was worried I gave him too much focus, but I think it was worth it.”

You’re proud of her. She used to be scared of Gyarados, now they’re good friends.

“Come on guys, let’s head back to the hotel.”

You all head back to the hotel. You even have room for Levi in here, although it’s not exactly roomy. She lets some of the others rest against her, although she gets a little testy when they poke into her belly too much. She behaves herself though. Destiny rolls up and down her playfully. Aria rides Dan like an excited child. Trunks crawls on the wall and ceiling. You play with them all for awhile. The stress of the day melts off of you, and you lay down on Levi to catch your breath. Spending quality time with your friends and Pokemon makes you just a little more at peace with yourself.

“I’ve been looking into that Ritchie kid,” Jeanine says from the computer.

“I promised not to research him.”

“I didn't. And you know how much I love mysteries.” She smiles mischievously. “I don’t know why he was being so weird. He’s never done an underhanded thing in his life.” She takes a sip of coffee. “There’s got to be something. I’ll keep looking.”

She readjusts her seating on the chair and keeps clicking around. “What if I find out he murdered somebody?”

“Okay, well, tell me about that. But thing else”

“And what if he burned down an old folk’s home but nobody died?”

“Sure. That too.”

“What if-”

You roll your eyes and walk away. “Anything super sketchy, tell me.”

She smiles. “Okay, I’ll stop.” Vance gives her a kiss and says he’s heading to bed. She slaps him on the butt and shouts to him as he goes into their bedroom. “Rest up now, I’ll be waking you up when I’m done.”

“...Heart. He’s a sweety.”

Clair’s already gone. You say your goodnight to Jeanine and join her and Robin.

“Hey!” Ritchie greets you. It’s a small park covered in battle damage. Looks like a place where trainers fight in the city. It’s not nearly as crowded as you’d expect. Youn guess everyone is saving it for the arena. Still, there are a few people around. Nobody except a few trainers that have already been eliminated want to train out here though.

Ritchie has a Pikachu running some drills. It has the same movement ticks that Vance’s Sneasel had. It’s not wrong, but Vernon taught you a better way to run over obstacles for Pokemon of that general shape. You could help him out here, if you wanted to.

You send out Dan. “Go on buddy, show them what you’ve got!”

Dan comes out and hits a few target pebbles you toss into the air.

“That’s pretty good,” Ritchie tells you. “But check this out!” He picks up a few pebbles, then throws them high into the air. “Sparky! Iron, Normal, Electric!”

His Pikachu, Sparky, leaps into the air. He hits the first pebble with Iron Tail, the second one with a Quick Attack, and the third with a very quick, very precise Thundershock. It keeps its body stretched out to float down just a little slower. It could potentially use that move to avoid a ground attack if it isn’t timed right. The fact that he’s showing you this means he’s incredibly dumb, confident in other moves, or that it’s some sort of trick.

Robin joins in. “Go on, Joltik. You go too!” She has her Golem spin a rock down the area. Her Joltik spins on top of it, zapping several small pebbles she tosses out as well. It catches the last one with a quick shot of webbing, pulls it in, then eats it. Wait, that last one wasn’t a pebble, it was a berry! It saw it with Compound Eyes.

A few people gather around. You recognize at least two as trainers that are still in the tournament.

The three of you take a breather. Your electric Pokemon exchange tiny zaps of electricity to speak.

You leap onto Dan like he’s a giant surfboard and point to someone in the crowd. You recognize their face as one of the trainers that was eliminated. “Come on, I bet you’ve got some cool moves too, right?”

He looks down. “I don’t know. I thought I did.”

Jeanine tosses in her bulbasaur, Thistle, and uses Razor Leaf. It’s nowhere near as impressive as the moves you just saw, but she’s having fun and lightening the mood. It creates a low bar for others.

His friend in the crowd nudges him on. He tosses out his Hariyama and shows off it’s Arm Thrust. You cheer him on. Jeanine, Robin, and Ritchie join in. He encourages his friend to go in this time. This one is still in the tournament, but he decides to hell with it, and throws out his Starme. It creates a great lightshow with various beams.

The morning and afternoon seem to fly by as more people join in. But it’s fun. There’s a lot of encouragement and tips flying around. You even see a few creative uses for moves that you never would have thought of.

Dan’s all out of tricks to show off, minus the really important secrets like Sparkle Canon, and the impromptu freestyle contest seems to be winding down.

Considering how many hits Gyarados took, it must have an ability to protect itself somehow. Filter could fit, but with how Gyarados is moving unnaturally, I would say that its ability changes its type. It takes multiple different moves that should be supereffective against it, so it can't just be something like volt absorb.

Gyarados' ability is Protean, or perhaps color change. That's my guess.

You exchange tips with the trainers there. Mostly based on getting the most out of abilities. There’s also some maneuvering and striking tips like Vernon taught you, but you find many of them are too advanced for most trainers so you help them with toned down versions instead.

“Wow, I thought you’d be a totally stuck up rich bitch,” someone tells you. “You’re really down to earth.”

“Uhh, thanks.”

Everyone else is a bit more tactful. Apparently someone’s been spreading rumors about you. Your being so helpful with everyone looks like it’s dispelled a lot of that, though. Some people heard you blackmailed or did something weird to get a royal title. Others heard you beat up a trainer for like, no reason at all. Another person heard you had a crazy long criminal record. Well, that one’s true, but still. People seeing you be so helpful and nice makes a big difference.

You get a few helpful tips yourself. Someone told you that Dan will always favor magnetic north when maneuvering unless you specify. You test it out, and it turns out they’re right. You also learn that Teleport creates a noise at the spot where the Pokemon will appear, a second before they teleport in, but it’s at a frequency that only hearing-sensitive Pokemon like Crobat can hear. You get a lot of small tips like this that might come in handy in specific situations.

Oh wow. It’s getting late. The sun is already setting. But you feel good. You've met a lot of people and Pokemon.

“Bye everyone!” You start heading off.

You get a loud farewell from the remaining group. Ritchie is especially loud and thankful. It feels good. You leave the scene, watching people eagerly sharing advice and help. These are people that respect you, and not even because you scammed them into it.

Looking over the Gyarados battle scene, I am tempted to say that it is more likely to have color change instead of protean, although it could still be either way.
