You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

Poor Portland seemed to be completely out of it, even when you all reported to the debriefing room where both the Admiral and Captain Takeuchi were waiting, no doubt to dissect you and your sisters' performance during the last battle. Sam's there too, though she's just sitting quietly beside the Admiral, a smug smirk on her face. You and Johnston sit down immediately, while Portland has to be prompted to sit down with some help from Heerman, her mind still shattered from her sudden "promotion".

"T-Task force leader for Taffy 3..." She mumbles with a mixture of disbelief and horror. Mostly horror.

"Excuse me?" The Captain turns.

"Oh, it's nothing!" You say cheerfully, covering up Portland's funk. "She's just tired!"

"Ah, I see." The Captain nods and makes no further inquiry. "Anyways, we've been reviewing the footage taken from our drones and STRIKE-1 of your performance, and so far, things appear to be.... promising."

"Damn right we are!" You say proudly.

"Now, don't get too ahead of ourselves, here." The Captain grunts. "While the three of you clearly have the right attitude, you don't quite have the right restraint."

"What?" You blink.

"See this right here." The Captain plays a video showing you making the run at the Abyssal CL that was protecting the transport. The that nearly nailed you but you managed to take out with a well thrown depth charge. "While your improvised attack was certainly effective, if that light cruiser had been a little more accurate or had a little more armor, such a run like this could have gotten you sunk."

"You have a point, sir." You grudgingly admit. No matter what you could say, under any other circumstances, that CL had you dead to rights and you knew it.

"That's why the Admiral decided decided to assign you under Portland. Hopefully some of her restraint will rub off on you." The Captain nods.

Ugh.

Portland finally shakes herself somewhat free from her funk.

"O-of course. The Admiral always knows best!" She nods quickly.

UGH.

"However, I do commend you with sending Johnston and Heerman to support Portland. Had you not done that, she could have taken severe damage from enemy torpedoes." The Captain continues.

Well, that was a little better, at least.

"We have to the agreement that had your force had a few more ships, circumstances would have turned out very differently." The Admiral finally speaks up, his voice warm and gentle as always. "Because of this, we will allow you add an additional two ships to your task force, up to Portland's discretion."

Wonderful.

"Anyways, that's all for now." The Captain says. "I suggest you all make a visit to the repair bay to heal up any fatigue. Also, Hoel, Shen and Vahlen have both expressed a desire to talk to you."

"Really?" You frown. What could either of them want, you wonder.

"Anyways, dismissed." The Captain says as he walks out of the room. The Admiral gives a warm smile to you all and gets up, Sam quickly opening the door for him. As the Admiral exits, Sam quietly gives you a dual thumbs up before following him out.

Huh, now what...

""Hey, Hoel, you wanna come along with us to the repair bay?" Johnston slaps a hand on your shoulder, a devilish grin on her face. "We can finally check out what's under Portland's armor!"

"Tempting, but I'm gonna pass for now. I wanna see what Shen wants to talk to me about." You respond.

"Awww, fine. More fun for me and Heerman!" Johnston smiles, completely unphased at your rejection. "Have fun!"

You give your sisters a little wave as they drag poor Portland off. She probably would have given more of a fight if she still weren't reeling from the effects of her new promotion. Kinda a shame you wouldn't be there to see it, really. You quickly make your way over to the armory, where you find Shen and a mixed team of human and fairy mechanics crawling all over your heavily damaged Rig.

"I should have known you would wreck your Rig again on your first mission." Shen sighs and shakes his head.

"I don't think you called me here to complain about THAT, did you?" You cross your arms skeptically.

"Of course not." Shen walks over to a nearby work table where you see two bats. Your old wooden one and what looks to be a metal bat. "I've managed to fabricate a new bat for you out of much stronger and lighter materials. It lacks the pure hitting power of your old bat, but you'll be able wield it far more effectively and quickly thanks to its lighter weight. Whichever you choose is up to you."

You open your mouth to say something before being cut off.

"And no, you can't take both. Your Rig will only accept one bat at any time." Shen cautions.

"Oooooh, that shiny metal one looks neat." You grin as you pick it up and give it a few practice swings. You're caught off guard at just how LIGHT it is. It's practically like a feather in your hands. You almost doubt it's an actual, solid object until knock it against an inert Rig and hear the nice, hearty sound of metal clanging against metal. Jesus you wonder just how FAST you could swing this thing!

"You did a real nice job, Shen!" You smile brightly. "I feel like I can take on a hundred Abyssals with this!"

"Let's hope you don't get into a situation like that." Shen chuckles nervously. "Battles like that tend to mean heavily damaged rigs."

"Ah, don't sweat it, Shen!" You laugh heartily, though you get the feeling that's just making him worry more.

"Hey Shen, while we're here, how about you tell me a little more about those upgrades?" You ask. "Like, how exactly does the whole thing work?"

"Ah, well." Shen sits down on a chair, first shooing a small gaggle of faeries off of it. "I think I've already told you how only ships that have been in the field repeatedly can accept upgrades onto their Rigs. When a shipgirl reaches that point, she can be refitted."

"Refitted?"

"Like you would normally be in a shipyard." Shen explains. "We can add a lot of incremental upgrades. A few more guns, some more armor, a little more engine power. We can also add in one major upgrade, putting in some out of period equipment."

"And is this repeatable or a one time thing?" You ask.

"It is repeatable, but the gaps between refits get larger and larger." Shen says. "Annapolis I believe is Flight 2, meaning she's gone through two refits. She chose satellite uplinks and AEGIS radar system for her upgrades. Excellent support systems."

"How about something a bit more... punchy?" You point to a battleship Rig, bristling with guns and cannons.

"Of course we have modernized weapon systems, but we'll just have to wait for your first refit to come along." Shen gives a slight smile. "Anyways, we've still got a lot of work to do. Not only do we have to fix your Rig but we have to follow up maintenance for Portland and your sisters."

"Yeah, no problem." You say, dismissing your bat. The weapon dissolves into the air and rematerializes on your Rig, nestled safely in its carrying holster.

After saying a quick farewell to Shen, you head over next door to the research labs, where Vahlen would be. As you approach, the guards posted around the building give you wary looks, but otherwise let you pass. You were a shipgirl, after all. Again, you enter the stark white, overly clean interior. You let the receptionist/guard stationed at the front desk that you're here to see Vahlen, and are told to wait until she comes out.

Almost immediately you see one of the secure doors leading out of the door hiss open, and something flies out at you.

You stand you ground. In this place, you're reasonably sure there wouldn't be anything that could pose any real threat to. Nonetheless, you brace yourself, preparing for impact-

-only to be caught off guard as Vahlen wraps her arms around you and kisses you on the forehead.

"Thank you thank you THANK YOU, Hoel!" Vahlen says cheerfully, her lab coat reeking of bleach and disinfectant. "You have no idea what you have done for us!"

"Um, thanks?" You wheeze, unsure of whether you want to use your superior strength to shrug her off. "All I did was capture an Abyssal that was particularly smart or threatening."

"Oh, it wasn't but it's the first live capture of an Abyssal since.... well.. ever!" Vahlen finally lets go of you and pats you on the head. "It may not seem like much, but even the smallest of changes can have the largest of impacts!"

"Uh huh, okay." You nod a bit uncertainly. "So why'd you call me over here?"

"Well, I wanted to show you the fruits of our labor!" Vahlen says happily. "Just follow us down to the lab..."

Vahlen gestures the security door, and you get this scary feeling that once you go in you weren't coming out. Just your imagination... right?

"Sure thing." You say a bit nervously as you follow Vahlen through the large security doors.

Once again, it feels like your walking through a very macabre aquarium. All along the walls were tanks of preservative, each one containing some type of Abyssal corpse, all of them torn up or cut apart in some way. Whether it was from combat damage of Vahlen's "experiments", you weren't sure.

"So, uh, you dissect a lot of Abyssals here, huh?" You ask, trying to distract yourself from how creepy this place was.

"Of course. Every recovered Abyssal corpse is additional research material for us, and denies the Abyssals the ability to recycle them."

"Oh yeah..." You nod, remembering how Vahlen told you how the Abyssals could recycle the corpses of their dead into raw material for new Abyssals.

Finally, Vahlen leads you to a sort of observation window. Down below, you could see what appeared to be half operating room half theater. A team of white coated doctors were surrounding the still alive Abyssal transport, jamming probes and all manner of different instruments into it. To it's credit the creature doesn't make any noise or appear to be in any pain.

"We discovered early on that it doesn't have pain receptors." Vahlen explains, as if reading your mind. "In fact, it hardly has any sort of nervous system at all. Just enough for basic motor functions. It is a highly specialized and extremely efficient creature, meant to carry large loads of cargo and nothing else."

You notice that there's a large hose plugged right its abdomen, pumping out a viscous, black liquid to an unseen destination.

You wince as your stomach starts to twist in on itself.

"What exactly is that black stuff?" You ask, pointing to the hose.

"I'm afraid that's classified information." Vahlen says sternly. "However, what I can tell you is that this is the common material that Abyssals process through their digestive systems. That fluid is quite literally the lifeblood of all Abyssals. Understanding it is the key to understanding how to defeat them."

"That sounds an awful lot like that structural gel Shen was using." You say darkly.

"I cannot comment on that." Vahlen huffs. "That information is above even a shipgirl's clearance level."

"Huh, guess the Navy's always gotta have its secrets." You sigh, still uncomfortable at the possibility of your Rig being made out of Abyssal shit. "You uh... haven't dissected any shipgirls, have you?"

"Oh, I would love to!" Vahlen catches herself when she realizes too late who she's talking to and blushes. "I mean... .there has never been any opportunity to. The Admiral was always very strict with his orders that shipgirls were off limits to experimentation! I would never operate on a shipgirl without authorization!"

"Too late there, Doctor." You grunt. "Okay, I'm... outta... heeereee..."

Suddenly, your legs give out from under you and you collapse on the cold white tile.

"Hoel? Hoel!" Vahlen kneels down to check you. "Have you gone to the repair bay at all yet?"

You manage to shake your head.

"Oh dear. Ignoring repair times for extended periods after a mission will negatively impact your health!" Vahlen tuts. "Thankfully, we have our own repair facilities here that you may use! They were the original prototypes, but they still function just as well a the full scale version!"

"I... really want to go back." You manage to gasp.

"If that is what you wish." Vahlen nods and motions just out of your sight. A pair of Marines march in and gingerly help you up to your feet before placing you in a conveniently available wheelchair. "If you have any additional things you want to know, you can come back any time!"

To their credit, the Marines are extremely prompt, giving you a personal ride all the way back to the repair bay. By that point, you've regained enough strength that you assure them you can go inside under your own power, which you barely manage. You settle yourself into the communal pool, where you see Johnston and Heerman still teasing Portland over her lack of "bulges".

"See Hoel? Look!" Johnston giggles, pointing at Portland's chest. "Straight as rail, just like her personality!"

"Okay, you've had your fun." Portland grumbles, her arms held defensively over her chest.

Meanwhile, you slowly slide into the pool and let the therapeutic water flow over you. Your skin tingles and your muscles relax, and all the pains and aches melt away. Goddamn this water was literal magic.

Honestly, you were in no mood for any teasing right now, even if it was well deserved. You were just sort of in the mood for figuring out what exactly your task force was going to be made of.

"So, Portland, what kind of task force are we gonna be?" You ask as you leisurely lounge in the water.

"Well, that depends." Portland sighs in relief from the brief respite. "The type we ships we get wholly depend on what our role would be. Considering our current makeup, we can either form ourselves as an independent attack force, mixed with more destroyers, light cruisers, subs, or light carriers so we can move and strike fast. Or we can play escort to the larger ships and add on heavy cruisers, battleships, or full size fleet carriers."

"Fair enough." Portland nods. "Johnston? Heerman? What about you two?"

"Whatever Hoel says, I'm good with!" Johnston says happily.

"I agree. I'm in no mood to escort." Heerman nods.

"All right." Portland nods. "Then that means we either get another destroyer, a light cruiser, submarine, or light carrier. I don't think I need to explain what a destroyer does. Light cruisers are kind of an in between of a heavy cruiser and destroyer. I think I can get us an Atlanta. Very good AA platforms. Submarines are slow, but they make excellent scouts and ambushers. Light and escort carriers don't quite have the sheer numbers of planes as the fleet carriers, but we have a lot more of them and they're still a great force multiplier."

"Hey, don't underestimate CVEs." You remind her. "They can pack plenty of punch."

"You sure you can get us an Atlanta?" You ask.

"I think I can." Portland assures you. "Fortunately, a couple of them came back shortly before you did, so they haven't received permanent assignments yet. We should be able to grab one of them."

"Well sounds like we're set." You yawn.

"Don't sleep in the pool. It's hazardous." Portland tuts.

"Yeah, yeah." You shrug. "Anyways, Portland, have you ever been in the labs? You know, Vahlen's place?"

"A few times, yes. Usually just to check in on the Admiral's behalf." Portland frowns. "Never did like the place, though. Always gave me the creeps."

"Yeah, me too." You nod. "Do you uh, actually know what they do with the Abyssal corpses?"

"Standard dissection and scientific study." Portland glances at you. "Why do you ask?"

"Well, I just saw some really creepy shit there." You explain. "Remember that transport we captured? It was hooked up to this machine and they were just pumping this black goo out of it. When I asked Vahlen what it was, she got all defensive and shit."

"Sounds like her." Portland nods.

"Ewwww, that's gross." Johnston wrinkles her nose.

"Very." Heerman agrees.

"Here's the thing." You glance around to see if anybody was listening. "I think that shit is the structural gel Shen uses."

All three girls just stare at you.

"Well, I propose we at least keep an eye on them from now on." You suggest.

"You can do what you want, but I'm not getting involved in this." Portland huffs. "Asking too many questions and sniffing where you aren't supposed to is a great way to torpedo your career."

"Let's go get our light cruiser first." You say as you head for the showers.

"Sure thing." Portland nods as she and your sisters follow you to the showers.

After getting a good rinse off, getting dried, and getting dressed, you meet Portland at the entrance to the repair bay.

"Well, lead the way." You mock boy.

"Right, right." Portland rolls her eyes and motions for you to follow. You and your sisters follow her to the bay, where you could see a couple of shipgirls circling around in the water. Up above, the air was a cloud of black and grey as curtains of flak were being thrown into the air. Dummy planes, acting as the targets, fell out of the sky like rain, unable to withstand the full fury of an Atlanta class cruiser's dual purpose 5 inch guns.

Coincidentally, Captain Takeuchi also happened to be there observing the demonstration.

"Ah, Portland, here to pick a new task force member?" He turns to your group.

"That's right, sir." Portland nods. "We were wondering if any of the Atlantas were available?"

"Hmmmm, I think I have just the one." The Captain turns to the water. "SAN DIEGO! FRONT AND CENTER!"

One of the shipgirls, one with long, very dark brown hair bordering on black, turns to respond to the call. Your first instinct is reeling at just PRETTY she looked. Like all your eyes saw was an otherwise plain looking girl, but your brain kept telling you that there was something more to her just lurking under the surface.

"San Diego reporting for duty, Captain." San Diego salutes as she steps back onto shore, her Rig dissolving away as she does so.

"San Diego, as of now you will be assigned to Portland's task force." The Captain instructs her. "And these will be your fellow ships Hoel, Johnston, and Heerman."

"Ah! The famed Taffy 3!" San Diego gives a slight smile. "I've heard so much about you!"

"Before or after the war?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Well, both of course!" San Diego giggles. "I've heard of your exploits as Samar, as well as your more recent 'adventures.' I hear you're quite dangerous with bats and depth charges."

"Oh, heh, I guess that's already getting around?" You chuckle.

It's the Clover Escort Force~!
>>
>>43867236
Dude, it's just like actors meeting together on a different movie. Characters look the same, but act different.

I'm lost, is this an expy from another merc quest?

She looks like Rin from Cyberpunk Idols.
>>
>>43867264
And this is significant..... why?

To Hoel I mean
>>
>>43867268
USS San Diego, CL-53, one of the most decorated ships of WW2. 18 battle stars compared to Portland's 16.
>>
>>43867268
Currently, our task force makes up of characters from Cyberpunk Idols.

We possibly could have possibly received different Merc characters if we chose a different main character at the beginning.
>>
>>43867283
Ah, lovely. When are we going to meet the US Flagship from WW2?
>>
>>43867251
Well I was hoping for there to be a mix of Merc's girls, not just CIMQ ones.
>>
>>43867296
Well there's always the Light/Escort Carrier left.

On that note, are San Francisco or Annapolis also previous Merc characters?

>>43867294
Uh, which flagship? If you mean like America's Yamato, then I guess USS Iowa counts.
>>

>plot twist

>>

>San Francisco or Annapolis
From what I can tell, they're new.
>>
>>43867285
Or chosen fleet escort.
>>
>>43867310
Janice is the Big E.

I assume it's Karla or Faylynn that is the escort carrier.
>>
>>43867328
>Karla
>excellent torpedo bulges
>considerable speed
>CVE
dude it does not compute.
If there is any CVE that fits the bill, it has to be Red.
>>
>>43867328
I'm thinking Karla is the BB in the OP pic. Though which of Merc's characters can also fit that profile?
>>
>>43867348
Janice?
Euclid?
BREE?!
>>
Yeah.... our decision to go with lightwieghts heavily skews things towards the Idols.

Merc's adult characters would be non-light carriers and crusiders, and a few woul be bbs.

>>43867348
Like we'd be able to meet her now with the whole Independent attack decision.
>>
It could be a new character.....

Rolled 7 (1d20)

Rolling for newness.

1 to 19: Recycled
20: New
>>
>>43867216
Here's to hoping that our CVE, if we don't manage to get a CVL, is either built on a tanker hull or purpose built (preferably both) or white plains.

Other depictions of white plains made her launch system throwing baseballs that she carried around in a red wheelbarrow, which is just to cute.

(and fits the baseball theme)

(Also, she defeated a Japanese heavy cruiser in a gun battle, which should count for something.)

"Wait, haven't I heard your name somewhere before?" You frown.

"Possibly. I've practically been all over the Pacific, really." San Diego gives a slight smile. "I believe I ended the war with something like 18 battle starts? Or was it 15? Nobody seems to be able to agree."

"Well shit." You whistle. "Me and my sisters only got a handful."

"Show some respect!" Portland hisses. "With the 18 count, that puts her second behind Enterprise with her 20!"

"Daaaaaaaaaang, you weren't kidding when you said you got around." You nod.

"Well, I'd love to talk more, but I still have training to complete." San Diego smiles. "My Rig was recently tuned up and it is still going through shakedowns."

"No problem we have to be going heading out to our next stop, anyways." Portland salutes. "I look forward to sailing with you, San Diego."

"Same." San Diego responds with a more casual salute.

The four of you leave the cruiser training course and head further into the bay, where the carriers normally practiced. It's immediately evident when you get near, as you can see flocks of miniature Wildcats, Hellcats, Corsairs, Dauntlesses, and Helldivers circling in the air, attacking mock targets scattered all throughout the bay. Near the shore, you could see a number of carrier shipgirls in a long firing line, their rifles spitting out bullets that quickly morphed into planes that took to the air.

Carriers sure were weird.

And at their head was a tall, busty, and beautiful carrier giving each of her juniors instructions and advice on how to better manage their planes. That had to be Enterprise herself, no doubt. She then turns around and starts sailing toward your group. You wonder how the hell she knew you were here when you hear the buzzing of SBDs circling above. Of course, she could see through her planes.

"Portland, it's been far too long!" Enterprise coos as she completely ignores military protocol and just hugs the cruiser while she's in the middle of her salute. "What have you been up to? I hardly see you around anymore!"

"Been busy." Portland wheezes.

"I hear you're a task force leader now, is that right?" Enterprise continues hugging Portland, burying the poor cruiser's face into her ample crash barriers.

"Y-yrph!" Portland says in a muffled tone before finally being able to extricate herself from Enterprise's iron grip. "Here's some of the ships under my command, Hoel, Johnston, and Heerman."

"Ohmygosh you are all so ADORABLE!" Enterprise squeals as she lunges forward and swoops all three of you up in her arms and HUGS.

"Aaaaah!" You groan.

"Were carriers always this strong?!" Johnston wheezes.

"Not now. Not like this." Heerman laments.

"Oh I just ADORE destroyers! Just the cutest little things!" Enterprise giggles, rubbing her cheek against yours.

"Enterprise, please, you're going to crush their hulls." Portland cautions. "Fletchers don't have any armor."

"Oh! I'm sorry!" Enterprise finally lets go, sending you and your sisters toppling to the ground. "Sometimes I forget my own strength!"

>Don't worry, we understand.

When did JanicE boat take levels in Amazon. Julieboat I could imagine doing it.

It's nice of Merc to have us meet her for the first/last time.

"Don't worry, we understand." You sigh. "Anyways, we were wondering if there were any available carriers you could transfer to our task force.

"Oh! I think I have just the one!" Enterprise spins on her heel and motions for one of the carriers to come over. "I'm sure you all remember White Plains?"

"Holy crap, she's here?!" You blink.

"Oh oh, wasn't she the one that nailed a Jap cruiser with her 5 incher?!" Johnston asks excitedly.

"That's the one." Heerman confirms with a grin.

At that moment, short, white haired carrier toting an extremely large rifle sails up to Enterprise, her curiosity clear on her face.

"What did you need me for En-"

"WHITE PLAAAAAIIIIINNNNNS!" You and your sisters cry as you all leap on her at the same time, knocking her backwards and into the the water with a loud splash.

"Oh my, isn't it just wonderful to see old comrades reuniting?" Enterprise says cheerfully.

"Oh dear lord it never ends." Portland facepalms.

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thread is next week. Don't forget Vertical Tanks on Saturday!
>>
>>43867547
Hoel, Johnston, Heerman, Portland, San Diego and White Plains, eh. Guess we got an all-star team here.

Cannot wait for the inevitable encounter with the Japaneese shipgirls.

Only negative is that White is as slow as a sub... but then, she should be staying far enough back that her limited tactical mobility isn't a problem, and her engines WERE designed to give her the same STRATEGIC mobility as the rest of the fleet! (i.e., she can still cruise at the same 15 knots as the rest of us)
