Become The Vampire Quest 8

You awaken to the sound of your alarm, although instead of the beeping you programmed it for, it's playing your favorite song. You look at the device for a moment and sit up, examining it. The speakers are new, and as you pick it up they fold away into the body of the phone. The screen flashes briefly before the words "Good morning" drift across it. Neat.

You set it back down and stretch, looking over at Meliora. She's still sitting there playing her video game. You don't remember her leaving last night, although it's not like you woke up. You spent most of the night trying to practice lucid dreaming, but without Angie to tip you off you weren't able to get it right. Turns out staying aware while relaxing enough to fall asleep is really hard.

As you think back to the fading wisps of your dreams, all you can remember is something about Sammy and an icecream scoop. You don't remember how they were related, but it made sense at the time. You shake your head a bit and head for the bathroom to wash up. Meliora adjusts her headphones a bit.

"Morning. Sleep alright?"

You nod slightly and rub your eyes.

"Mostly. You? Restful night?"

Meliora pauses her game and turns to you.

"If you mean my recharge time, then yes, it was refreshing. I don't really sleep though."

You shrug slightly and smile.

"I'm being polite. I know you don't need to sleep, but that's not all you do at night, right?"

Meliora turns back to her game.

"I suppose. It was an alright night. I got a rare drop, some new armor and my upgrades finished on my other chassis. I'm going hunting after school. If you have some time I'd like to test your abilities, see what you can do. I need to put my upgrades through some stress tests anyway."

The Rules:
Same system as Become The Dragon Quest. If you don't know what that is, it's best of three d20 rolls. I name a stat that sums up what you're trying to do, and if I don't name a relevant skill, you try to fill in the blank based on what you're trying to accomplish. “Break open the door” might be Strength based, but if you've been playing baseball after school and there's a lead pipe nearby, you could apply your Baseball skill to the roll. A 20 on the die is a crit threat, and if either of the other two rolls is 20 or higher after mods, it's a critical. A crit fail is when you have two or more 1s. So far this system has worked out well enough. We'll get into combat rules as needed, but in basic terms you have wounds, not HP, and the worse the wounds, the more penalties you accrue while doing other things.

Most Important Rule:
Have fun.

You stop at the bathroom door.

"Rain check? I've got something going on tonight. Maybe when I get back or something? I mean, I have to keep things low-key for a bit. If people find out I'm a hunter..."

The helmet almost hits you right in the head, and it collapses into a badge-shaped device in your hands. Meliora smirks a bit.

"Recon gear. No one will know who you are. I can get you a whole suit that can mask your scent and foul the taste of your blood so vampires won't be able to identify you by taste."

You examine the badge for a moment and set it on your desk, smiling.

"Thanks. That sounds pretty handy."

Meliora turns back to her game with a smug smile on her face.

"I'll hook you up, /if/ you decide to come help me out. It won't take too long, just a few minutes after class. It's impact resistant, and I'll add in a few extras."

You look at the badge for a moment. On the one hand, a suit that will let you avoid being detected by scent sounds ideal for the party, especially if you can fold it away and hide it easily. On the other hand, you'd be sparring with a robot designed to beat every type of monster with equal ease. Plus it'll give away that you can be bribed with goodies. Maybe you should check with Angie and see what your forecast is...

>Thanks but no thanks, I don't think it'll go well.

"Sounds fine to me so long as you don't cripple me."

Meliora nods a bit.

"I'll bring a medical kit along just to be safe. I'll hold back though. I need a sparring and hunting partner, not a punching bag."

You grab your uniform and towel.

"I'll keep you posted. First I've gotta get ready though."

Meliora sighs softly.

"Right. Bathing. I should probably wipe myself down before I head to class. Knock before you walk out of the bathroom, alright?"

Lacking a suitable counterpoint, you shrug and head for the shower. It is, you must admit, pretty luxurious. There's room for a shifted werewolf, and with the push of a button the expansive tub gets even larger, essentially turning into a hot tub. You suspect you'll need to unwound after particularly rough days, and having access to a jacuzzi in your bedroom is a blessing.

You finish cleaning up and change into your uniform, straightening up your hair a bit and putting on your glasses. You knock on the door and pause for a moment. When there's no answer you open the door a crack.

"Meliora? Are you done?"

You hear her near her bed.

"You can come out, yeah."

You open the door and spot her sliding something under her bed. She turns towards you and stands. Her hair is pulled back into a bun with chopsticks through it, or maybe they're some kind of decorative hair pin? Something like that. Her uniform is crisp like it was just pressed, and she seems a bit taller than before since she's wearing heels.

"Ready? I don't eat, but I can walk you to breakfast if you want."

"I'd like that, sure. I'm still learning my way around."

Meliora nods a bit and turns away, collecting her bag. You grab your own, along with your wallet and phone. Your phone shifts slightly, adjusting its appearance to match how it used to look, and you tuck it into your pocket. Maybe you can combine it with the suit and helmet, make your own Power Rangers transformation device. The notion fills you with amusement.

You head for the door and Meliora follows at your side, holding her bag with both hands. She looks like she belongs in an anime series or something, but you know that saying so would end with you getting beaten. Meliora gives you a glance out of the corner of her eye.

"I'll be honest. I don't know what to say. Should we be making small talk, it walking in silence?"

>make your own Power Rangers transformation device.

>>
You shrug a little bit and do your best to maintain a straight face.

“I dunno. I mean, nothing springs to mind. If there's something you want to talk about, I'm up for it.”

Meliora's eyes flicker for a moment.

“I can think of a few things, but most of them would either bore you or not make any sense. Do you play any games?”

You shake your head.

“I grew up moving around a lot and we didn't have a lot of money. I've never even played Mario before. I mean, I got a chance to play some Megaman once, but apparently you need to memorize the patterns in... I think it was Quick... No, Heatman's stage. I could never get it down when I tried it. I think I was seven...?”

When you look at Meliora she has an expression like she just blew a circuit. She seems utterly baffled.

“Alright, I'm gonna send your phone some games for you to play. I can... I can fix this. You've been deprived as a child and I can help.”

You pull your phone out of your pocket, and it begins folding itself in half, resembling one of the gaming devices you've seen before. Something by Nintendo, with the touch screen thing. You can't remember the name off the top of your head, but they made a bunch of models. You tuck it back into your pocket.

“You take gaming pretty seriously, huh.”

Meliora nods slightly.

“It's an under-appreciated art form. People assume they're always just for kids, ways to pass the time idly, but some of them are amazing. I'll have you play some of my favorites sometime. I think you'll like some of them a lot. Maybe not all of them, but some of them.”

You nod a bit and smile.

“That could be fun. Maybe we can schedule some gaming time and hang out.”

Meliora almost stumbles, and you're pretty sure she either just glitched or took longer than she planned processing what you said.
>>
“Hang out. Huh. Alright then. Sure, let's hang out sometime. Maybe when you're not being a social butterfly and going to parties all the time. Not even inviting your roommate, too. Classy.”

She smirks at you and punches your shoulder. Ow. You're starting to seriously consider getting shoulder pads. Meliora frowns a bit as you rub your shoulder.

“Sorry, is this better?”

Her second blow is much softer, but it's right on the fresh bruise she just gave you, so you find yourself wincing anyway. Meliora sighs quietly.

“Right. I'll... stop. Sorry about that. I haven't exactly had anyone to talk to or hang out with before. I'm spending so much processing power just taking in the experience so I can go over it later that I'm forgetting some pretty basic things, like proper force values for a friendly jab. I'll head off and review for a bit before class, we're almost to the cafeteria anyway. See you later?”

Meliora comes to a halt a few feet from the cafeteria door and looks at you a little expectantly, waiting on you to decide if she should go away or stick with you. You could drag her along in case you need backup, but you don't really feel like explaining to Sammy that you've got a cute robot roommate who sleeps in the same room as you. The last thing you need is for Sammy to get possessive and Meliora to have data on acting jealous to try applying to conversations with you.

“Actually, could you stick around? I mean, I might have a target on my back right now.”

Meliora nods slightly.

“I can imagine why. I'm not that great at talking to people, but I've got a good grasp of the gossip that goes on around here. People have assumed you're to do with a certain vampire disappearing since it happened the day you arrived. I'll keep close.”

You nod a little bit and smile.

“I appreciate it.”

Meliora rolls her eyes.

“Well, if I don't keep you out of trouble who else am I going to hang around with? Honestly, being self-centered? Not your best trait.”

Meliora gives you a wry smile, and you decide to humor her attempt at sarcasm with a chuckle.

“Fair enough.”

You head into the cafeteria and look around a bit. No sign of the vampires you saw yesterday, or of Sammy. Though that might just be because you're not looking hard enough. Sammy might be acting shy today, or have a morning practice, but you can't imagine the vampires being absent for a mundane reason. You grab some toast and an omelet with bacon, and Meliora helps herself to an apple. You sit down and watch Meliora meticulously begin to slice the apple bit by bit, carving it and eating the pieces she cuts off.

“What are you making?”

Meliora shrugs a bit.

“I haven't really decided. I might do a floral pattern or something. I was considering making little rabbits out of it, but I don't have any toothpicks.”

You nod and turns your attention to your meal. It's pretty good, though it needs a bit of salt. You go over your schedule briefly as you wash down a mouthful of toast with some orange juice. You've got hunting first thing, so you need to head to the gym to get changed. Aside from that you can relax a bit though. You've got time.

You pull out your phone and set it up to test Sammy. The interface is a little different, but instead of having to adjust to it, it seems to adjust to you. You type Sammy a quick message asking how she is and how she's enjoying her freedom, and turn back to Meliora.

“So what else do you enjoy besides gaming and hunting down monsters?”

Meliora shrugs a little bit.

“I read sometimes. I mean, I read a lot faster than you can, but there's a lot of literature out there. I've been expanding my database bit by bit though. I'm slowly starting to grasp some of the meaning behind the words, the metaphors, puns, and some of the concepts. I think my favorite one so far is the idea of 'love'. It sounds pretty interesting.”

She slices the apple core neatly in half and rests the two pieces side by side, shaping them a little bit before putting them back together. It looks like a little vase with flowers spilling out of the top. She nods approvingly and sets it aside.

“So you're saying you can't love or something?”

Meliora shakes her head.

“There are subroutines for it, but that's just basic code for a simulation. I don't think I'll be able to create love. It's something that will have to evolve naturally over time. It's rather realistic that way, don't you think?”

You nod a bit and glance at your phone. There are two messages. The first is a series of random characters, and the second one is fairly simple.

“Can't talk, training, done soon, talk to you later. Sorry about the last message, can't text while running.”

Hmm.

You reply back with “Did you get that thing I sent you? <3” and pocket your phone.

“Well, have you ever run the simulation? I mean, waiting for a ghost in the machine to evolve is one thing, but if you have a basic frame for the program, wouldn't that be a good starting point?”

Meliora shrugs a bit and leans back.

“Maybe. But who would I make the target of my affections? You? We've only just met. And I'm not running that kind of simulation with a stranger. I think I'll wait on it, thank you very much.”

You shrug a bit and finish up your meal.

“You're probably right, but if you're looking to adapt and evolve then you need to do what humans do.”

Meliora quirks an eyebrow.

“And what would that be?”

You stand up and grab your plate and bag.

“Make stupid mistakes because you feel like it, and deal with the consequences afterward. It's a learning experience.”

Your phone goes off again and you check the new message.

“Yep! Thank you, sweetie~”

You put your phone away and sigh. You've got about ten minutes before you need to think about getting to the gym.

“Not from this phone, no. I could send it myself- in fact, I just did. I'm triangulating their position.”

She turns and heads for one of the exits, and you follow behind her.

“Near the gymnasium. The supply shed, in fact.”

She grabs your wrist and squeezes gently.

“If you're light on your feet then run, and if you're not, try to hold on, or at least don't pass out.”

Before you can answer you hear a muffled whining sound, like something powering up.

As Meliora starts to run you follow suit, and you manage to keep pace with her at first until she... you suppose she kicks it into a higher gear in a literal sense. You leave confused students in your wake as you stumble and trip, trying to match a pace you just can't meet, dragged along by Meliora. She slows down near the gym, and you manage to resume a brisk jog as you come to the doors leading outside. Meliora glances out one of the doors.

“I detect two life signs.”

She reaches into her bag slowly.

“They're inside the shed. Do you need a weapon or anything? I've got a spare you could borrow. They're both werewolves.”

She opens the door a crack and looks at you, offering you a small device that resembles a pistol, with a little container attached to it that contains silvery liquid. You know, you didn't anticipate killing a werewolf on day two of your school life, but it is what it is.

Can't have Mel thinking ''they're all enemies'', or killing the other one if it's actually a friend.
If the situation goes bad we fix it, if it's a misunderstanding then nobody innocent dies.

Don't know. Search it if you want, it's cool. Capital sins vampires, and all that. It's just that I'm probably not that good with references...
>>
You look at the weapon for a moment before accepting it.

“Firstly, where do you keep this stuff? Secondly, is it nonlethal?”

Meliora shows you the inside of her bag. There's a small case for the gun, as well as a holster for several containers of various liquids. One looks like garlic sauce, another like plain water, although there's a small silver cross inside it, and on and on.

“The gun takes whatever you inject into it and mixes it with a cement-like compound. It's meant for trapping and snaring various creatures to be interrogated. If your friend is in trouble then I don't want either of them getting away. The silver will sap the strength of a werewolf. It's why a silver bullet is lethal, and a silver cross can drive them back.”

You nod slightly and pocket the pistol.

“For now, let me go in alone. I want to see if I can talk my way through this peacefully. You're my backup. If anything goes wrong...”

Meliora nods.

“Assuming I'm on time for class. Just try to fail fast if you're going to need my help.”

You chuckle a bit and head outside.

“Such concern. I'm touched.”

Meliora huffs a little and glares at you. You slip your hand into your pocket and grip the pistol tightly. It's reassuring to have a weapon, but you'd really rather not have to use it. You can hear voices from inside the shed, and one of them definitely sounds like Sammy, though you can't make out what she's saying.

You approach the side of the shed and make your way towards the door, but you can't find a good time to peek around the edge. It's hard to hear where people are inside from the echo, and you still can't tell what's being discussed from this angle. You can at least tell Sammy is in distress though, and the other voice is male and familiar to you, though you can't quite place it.

You could just go for it, you suppose. You don't have the time to sit around waiting for this situation to resolve itself. It's just a matter of picking your approach. Confrontation, talking it out, or something else.

You rise to your feet slowly and draw the pistol, readying it. One deep breath, and then you let it out slowly. You turn and head into the shed in a single movement, locking eyes with Mark for a split second before you nail him in the chest with your first shot. You hit his legs with the second as he tumbles back, and you trap his feet against the floor while his body sticks to the wall. Your third shot pins one arm, and a fourth for the other. He's thrashing and trying to break free, but he's not going anywhere.

You turn your attention to Sammy. She looks a little roughed up, but no worse for wear overall. Mostly her makeup seems smudged and her hair is a little all over the place, one of her ears poking out. She's on the floor, apparently having been cowering before Mark due to... whatever he had been doing. She looks at you blearily, smiling a little.

“Oliver... you... you came...”

She props herself up shakily and tries to get to her feet, and you help her up. Mark's thrashing has slowed a bit, and his he seems to be trying to shift to break free. You can tell because his facial hair is a bit fuller and his ears have slight points to them.

You give Sammy a hug and tuck her ear back under her hair, helping her adjust her ponytail.

“Go get yourself looked at. I'll catch up with you soon, alright? I want you to make sure you're alright. And if you see a golem girl on the way, that's Meliora, my roommate.”

Sammy nods slowly at first before blinking when you mention Meliora. She shakes her head slightly as if to clear it and then nods.

“Alright... um...”

She hugs you tightly and kisses you on the cheek before dashing out, leaving you with Mark. You turn towards him slowly. He's stopped struggling, and is now simply glaring at you in silence. You pocket the pistol, which feels considerably lighter now, and assess the situation. Pretty soon gym class will begin, and people will come this way to collect basketballs or something. You don't have long, and you don't know how to get Mark down without Meliora.

Mark is wearing a school uniform, which makes him either a current or former student. Either that or he swiped one to cause some trouble for Sammy. He still looks like something out of a bad horror film though, the creepy guy you just know is secretly the villain right at the start. You close the door to the shed carefully.

“Alright, Mark. Let's start with...”

“She is to be my bride, regardless of whatever games you might be playing. What a pack leader does with his mate is no business of anyone else. She showed me disrespect, so I dealt with her the way you might a disobedient dog. I punished her.”

He smirks at you, seemingly unafraid.

“I know enough from last night, hunter. Go ahead, kill me. Explain your way out of this one. If you kill one of their kind, how will the Wolfe clan feel about you then?”

He starts to laugh. You have half a mind to punch him, but then he might try to bite your hand, and that'll lead to all sorts of complications. Still, you answered your first question. How to proceed though...

You take out your phone and set it down nearby, typing onto the screen for it to record what's going on. Adaptive AI, do your thing. You turn back to Mark and walk into the frame for the recording. It can be edited later, and you want him distracted from your phone acquiring a camera pointing right at him.

“I'll make this clear then, since I want to be sure I understand. That's how you feel about Sammy, is it? That you can do as you like with her even though she isn't yours yet? That you're allowed to beat her, treat her like a dog? No wonder she can't stand you. Talk about a mutt not fit for leading a pack. Do you get your kicks from stalking and beating up young women generally, or is Sammy special? Because I took you for a werewolf, a shitty one, but a werewolf, and not an oversized chihuahua.”

The look on his face is pure gold. You've never seen anyone quite so angry before. Sure, you've seen people mad, but this is pure rage. You notice the sound of the silvery substance creaking a little bit and wonder almost idly how long it's supposed to last. You don't suppose Meliora has field tested her non-lethal methods much before, and it might be wearing pretty thin right about now.

“You wretch... I'll rip your throat out for this... And when I get my hands on her I'm going to make her suffer for this insult. Mark my words, hunter, I-!”

You hold up your hand, inches from his face, to silence him.

“A hunter would kill you on sight. I keep telling you people, I just know how to protect myself. I'm not a hunter. And you? You're not a real werewolf.”

The silvery material begins to visibly crack, and Mark's face is pale, his eyes turning golden. The rage has drained from his face completely, replaced by a complete lack of comprehension. You might have broken something.

Preferably on the way to the Nurse's Office for emergency backup and so Sammy won't wind up going back to the shed if she's already left, since we'd run into her on the way.

Also, message Mel and ask her to make a remote backup of our phone's storage medium if possible just in case he catches up and it isn't indestructible yet.

You grab your phone and bolt with a smile on your face.

“Give my regards to the family back home! And try not to get caught by campus security!”

You practically dance your way back to the door to the school. You almost want to sit and watch what happens next, actually. In fact... You send a quick message to Mel asking her to back up the video you recorded just in case, and to tell Sammy everything is fine and you'll meet her for lunch. Maybe you should have looked for Sammy's phone before leaving. Ah well.

You sit back to watch the situation unfold from behind a nearby tree. The shed jumps slightly and you hear a soft growl, and as a soft light fills the air around it you're almost giddy with anticipation. A werewolf transforming on school grounds is pretty much cause to bring down the hammer since they tend to be out of control if they're dumb enough to shift here, and you want to see what sort of response team they have for it.

You weren't expecting it to be Meliora.

Well, maybe not. For one, the person who arrives is taller and curvier than she is, but that could just be a different chassis. They're decked out in some sort of combat suit with a visor covering her eyes, with a sword of some sort at their waist, and their outfit is themed red instead of Meliora's pink. They walk into the shed and close the door, and then... silence. For a few tense seconds there's nothing, and then a large dent appears in the side of the shed, followed by another moments later. There isn't a single sound either time.

Then the door swings open. Mark is thrown to the ground, passed out in human form, and the android girl steps out. She glances your way briefly, visor glowing, before there's a brief flash of pink and she steps back. She pauses for a few seconds, and then runs away, back the way she came, away from the main school area.

You shoot Meliora a text message asking what the heck just happened and pocket your phone. You suppose it makes sense, why stop at one golem when you can make a bunch. You have to wonder if that one was a mindless security droid or an actual sentient being though. Probably the former. Isolate and subdue threats, then locate any witnesses and make sure no ordinary humans caught wind of things. As you head for the locker room you get a response from Meliora.

“Your phone included a copy of the video in the text. I've got it backed up on two systems now. I told Sammy everything went fine. Sorry, was busy contacting someone. Had to keep someone from getting his head examined and wiped. You don't know any idiots who would stand around to watch an apprehension on school grounds by security, would you?”

You sigh softly and smirk, putting your phone away. That explains that then. It almost makes you want to meet Meliora's dad for yourself, though she did say something about injuring you if you ask him about her. Maybe you'll luck out and have him for Chemistry later or something.

While your thoughts drift, you briefly recall promising Angie some chocolate-covered coffee beans. Hmm. It's the first day, and good impressions are important. On the other hand, keeping your promise to Angie is also important.

You head for the lockers to get changed. And right on time by the look of things. You look around for a locker, making note of Sammy's warnings about the numbers, and grab some gym clothes to change into. You limber up a little bit once your stuff is packed away and glance around at the other guys as you head for the main gym room. One of the things this school certainly isn't lacking in is scrawny guys who probably never had to lift a finger for anything in their lives. The muscular ones either workout for fun or have a “gift”, making them either incredibly dangerous douchebags, or monsters.

You look around the central gym area for a coach, and after asking around a little bit you manage to find the group for hunting class. The coach is a spry-looking middle-aged woman who looks like she could run down a sprinting deer without much effort. As you fall in with the other boys she smiles at you, turning to address the group as she speaks.

“Hey there! You're our new addition, right? I'm your coach. You can call me Coach Chestnut, Ms. Chestnut, or pretty much whatever else you like so long as you're respectful. Now, after yesterday's incident Coach Logan won't be back for a few months, so we'll be changing things up and going for a safer curriculum than starting you guys off with making traps. We don't want any more injuries, right?”

The boys mumble their assent, and she chuckles a bit.
>>
“Well, you might not like it, but trust me, this is going to be more fun. We're going to spend our morning exploring the school grounds. I have a scavenger hunt for you to complete and an obstacle course to run when you're done. If you complete one or the other then you pass the lesson, and if you complete both you get extra credit.”

She hands out some forms with the scavenger hunt, no two of which appear to be the same, and she grins.

“Alright, boys, move out!”

You look over your worksheet. Some of it seems dead simple, like finding an oak tree, and some of it seems pretty vague, like “a good place to watch the sunrise from”. You aren't sure if Coach Chestnut would grade this assignment based on effort or not, but you've got just under an hour to figure it out.

You make quick work of the scavenger hunt. Some of it is obvious stuff that just makes sure you know the area around the school well enough to get from one side to another, while other items on the list are about reasoning skills. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west, so you'd need to name a place that can see the eastern sky to see the sunrise, for instance. You take a little extra time to embellish your answers and coordinates with landmarks, just to be through.

On your way back to the gym to turn in the paper and move on to the obstacle course you spot one of the guys from class looking like he's struggling with the assignment. When he spots you he waves and smiles, running over.

"Hi there! You're the new kid, right? I'm Tobias, and I'm pretty new here myself. I don't know where anything is... can you help me out?"

You glance at the clock tower. You can spare time for some pointers or something, but to properly help him out you'll have to hope you beat the obstacle course on your first attempt. You're not too worried, but still.

You glance at his worksheet for a moment. It's a little easier than yours, but then, that might be because you already know a thing or two about wilderness survival. You nod slightly and adjust your glasses.

"I think she's trying to get us to think laterally. She wants to know we understand basic facts about the world that might help us hunt or track something. So get basic. Think about the obvious things and use that. I'm gonna take a crack at the obstacle course, and I'll see you back at the gym. Good luck."

Tobias looks at the sheet, then at you as you turn to run off.

"Hey! Thanks! And yeah, see you at the gym!"

He turns and walks off, and you head back to the gym to find Coach Chestnut standing by something that looks like it was ripped from a war film or a Japanese gameshow. You're glad you came back early, this might take a while. You hand in your scavenger hunt and prepare for the trial ahead.

You made an effort. An attempt was made. You did your best. As you're being carried to the nurse's office you get told a lot of things like that. It doesn't make your ankle any less sprained, but that's what coaches are for you suppose.

Frankly you're embarrassed. In pain, sure, but it should have been so easy. You got cocky and grandstanded rather than just finishing the course, and your foot slipped. At least it isn't a broken bone or something. You hop into the nurse's office after the other guys leave you to your own devices and find Angie on the floor snoring quietly.
