Become The Vampire Quest 9

You look at Angie for a moment and consider your options. When she's passed out like this it means she's working, but you don't really know what that means. Maybe someone died, or had a near-death experience or something. For all you know it could be Mark after getting his ass handed to him by campus security. You approach slowly, hopping your way to her side and crouching carefully.

“Angie? Angela, can you hear me?”

Angie grumbles quietly and lifts her head to look at you. Her makeup is smudged a but and she grabs a handkerchief from her pocket to dab at the corner of her mouth.

“Good morning...”

She smiles and yawns a bit, rolling onto her back and staring up at the ceiling, eyes sliding closed once more. You give her a little shake and she sits up in a sudden, jolting motion before giving you an empty stare like Frankenstein's monster. You've never actually seen the movie, but you presume a creature made from body parts, mad science and lightning would be pretty out of sorts upon being brought to life.

“I'm awake, I promise this time.”

She nods her head before the motion quickly slows, and she collapses to the floor with a content smile on her face.

“Angie, if you don't get up I'm replacing your coffee with chamomile tea. I really need your he-”

You don't see her move, and you barely have time to react. You can feel a blade against your neck, and the creeping terror you felt as a child as you were followed by your imagined monster rushes back to you all at once. Death is upon you. Angie whispers softly into your ear, her cool breath chilling your skin and making you shiver.

“You would threaten an angel of death? Empty or not, that's pretty gutsy. I... Wait, Oliver?”

The blade pulls away and Angie steps around you on her way to the coffee machine.

“Alright, time to perk up, this is probably important... What seems to be the matter?”
>>
You use one of the beds to help you stand, hopping around to the side and sitting down.

“I sprained my ankle while goofing off in gym class.”

You watch as Angie goes through two cups off coffee in a row, pouring herself a third and walking over to you.

“Well, let me have a look then.”

You nod and raise your leg a bit, taking off your shoe and sock. Your ankle is swollen and red, and Angie nods as she examines it. She reaches out and touches your ankle, her hand turning pale, and her touch is as cold as ice.

“Try not to scream.”

She winks at you.

“The icy hand of death is upon you.”

You almost manage to ask her why she warned you not to scream before her fingers pass into your flesh. You grit your teeth at the strange and painful sensation, and Angie cups your cheek with her free hand.

“Relax. I'll be done in a second. I'm just shifting things around a little bit to relieve the swelling.”

You nod a bit and try to put on a brave face. It feels like your foot is about to shrivel up and fall off, but after close to five minutes of Angie's tinkering she withdraws her fingers, and your ankle actually feels pretty good. You flex it tentatively, and there's no pain. Angie smiles a bit.

“I'm very good at my jobs. If you can keep from exerting yourself too much for the rest of the day you'll be just fine. Bit of advice, tell people you got some pain killers and an anti-inflammatory from me.”

You nod and stand up slowly. Your ankle feels a little strange once you put some weight on it, but at least you can walk.

The Rules:
Same system as Become The Dragon Quest. If you don't know what that is, it's best of three d20 rolls. I name a stat that sums up what you're trying to do, and if I don't name a relevant skill, you try to fill in the blank based on what you're trying to accomplish. “Break open the door” might be Strength based, but if you've been playing baseball after school and there's a lead pipe nearby, you could apply your Baseball skill to the roll. A 20 on the die is a crit threat, and if either of the other two rolls is 20 or higher after mods, it's a critical. A crit fail is when you have two or more 1s. So far this system has worked out well enough. We'll get into combat rules as needed, but in basic terms you have wounds, not HP, and the worse the wounds, the more penalties you accrue while doing other things.

Most Important Rule:
Have fun.

“Thanks for the help. I appreciate it.”

Angie heads for her desk and starts straightening up her hair and makeup a bit.

“No problem. Just try not to make a habit of it or my boss will wonder why I'm being so helpful to one student in particular. I try not to play favorites, but I don't want my poker buddy stuck in bed all day.”

You chuckle a little and head over to her.

“Can I get a hall pass so I can go back to the gym to get my stuff?”

Angie nods a little and pulls out two passes, marking one to go to the gym and signing off on the other one, leaving it blank.

“Oops. Looks like I signed one but didn't put where you were going to. How forgetful of me.”

Angie smirks a little bit and offers you both. You pocket the spare pass and smile at her.

“Try not to make a habit of it, otherwise the other students will wonder why I keep getting injured.”

Angie laughs a bit and takes another sip of her coffee.

“Run along now, Oliver.”

You head out of the office with a wave and head for the gym. You manage to spot Kim before you bump into her, but you nearly collide with the hall monitor while going around a corner. She shoots a glare at you and folds her arms.

“Nearly assaulting an enforcer of law and order so early in the morning? Well, at least you have your hall pass on you this time.”

She nods a bit and moves to walk past you.

“Carry on, citizen!”

You don't know what the hall monitor schedule is, but this is the second morning in a row that you've run into her. Maybe she has an empty class period or something. There's no sign of her companion though. With a shrug you continue on your way, and you manage to get back to the gym before the bell rings. You rinse off in the shower and change back into your uniform, feigning a slight limp the whole time, and head off to Chemistry class
>>
When you walk in the teacher looks you over for a moment, nodding to himself. He's wearing a shoddy lab coat with pockets crammed full of tools and devices, and his black hair is messy and a bit long. He smiles and turns to the class.

“Alright folks, we've got our transfer student at last! Now we can assign lab partners. I'd like everyone to write down their name and something about themselves on a slip of paper and put it in the bowl on my desk.”

He turns to you and offers a hand, grinning.

“Hey there, Oliver. I'm Professor Fenright, your science teacher. I teach Chemistry and a few other subjects. Why don't you grab a seat and we'll get you set up with your partner.”

You add your name to the bowl and sit back to see what happens. Your name gets pulled towards the end, along with Joseph Haier. It's pronounced “Higher”, but Professor Fenright spells it out for you. How thoughtful. His random fact is that he likes collecting butterflies, which is strange because he looks more like the kind of guy who would rip their wings off for fun, a thug squeezed into a classy school uniform. Your dad's notes never mentioned trolls, but if they exist, you've found one. When you walk over and sit next to him he looks at you with something approaching disdain or boredom and goes back to scribbling in his notebook.

Professor Fenright wraps up assigning the partners and smiles a bit, walking over to his desk. He pulls out a small device that looks like one of those USB outlet things that you stick into the wall to charge your phone from. He sets it on the table in front of the chalkboard and turns to the class.

“Aside from one student, all of you know the basics of lab safety, so we can start working on our projects and experiments. But first I want to go over something with you. Science is the art of understanding and making miracles.”

He picks up the device and extends the metal prongs, tossing it into the air. It unfolds into a moth, fluttering around the room near the ceiling before swooping towards a power outlet and plugging itself in, folding up once more and making a sort of purring noise. Professor Fenright grins.

“Today's lesson will be on the basics of chemistry. Please turn to page one of your textbook, rip it out, and make a little paper hat. Feel free to do the same with the next twelve pages. That's the introduction, and it's unimportant. Once that's done, turn to chapter one. I want you to read the first page, then we'll have a brief quiz on what chemistry is and do a fun experiment.”

You turn to Joseph.

“So... I don't have my textbooks yet. They're in the mail still. Can I share with you for now?”

Joseph looks at you for a moment and sighs dejectedly, pulling out his textbook and passing it to you. For a brief moment you can see his notebook. He's sketching flowers and butterflies, and he's pretty good at it too. You look at the textbook for a moment as you open it up. It's pretty banged up, probably a hand-me-down or older edition. Joseph just goes back to his drawings, and you skim through the first page to get the definitions you need.

“Wanna have a look?”

Joseph shakes his head, shying away and continuing to draw, making a conscious effort to conceal what he's working on and occasionally glancing across the room. You subtly follow his gaze and spot the person he's been looking at. It's one of the vampire girls you saw sitting with Vanessa yesterday at lunch. You turn back to the book and double check what you need to go over while mentally making note of which girl it is. You don't remember when her name was called, but you're pretty sure it was Rachel or something like that. Something with an R, for sure.

When the quiz is being passed out you give Joseph his textbook back. It's pretty simple stuff, and it's all fresh in your mind, so you're fairly sure you aced it. Joseph scribbles down some answers and passes his quiz in along with yours. Professor Fenright collects them and puts them on his desk before pulling out some glass tubes full of red powder.

“Who likes explosions?”

You raise your hand, along with most of the other guys in the class and a fair number of the girls,. Joseph doesn't raise his hand, but then again, he's focused on his drawings. Professor Fenright starts handing out vials of the powder, one for each table. When he gets to your table you ask him about the contents, and he just smiles when you mention thermite.

“It would be irresponsible for me to hand out potentially dangerous compounds and mixtures in my classroom. These vials are full of rust, and the next vials will contain aluminum powder. Perfectly safe, right?”

You smile from ear to ear.

“This is my new favorite class.”

Professor Fenright grins.

“Welcome to Mad Science 101 then.”

On his next lap around the room he hands out safety goggles with tinted lenses and vials of silvery powder.

“We're going to combine the contents of these vials carefully and slowly. They won't react, but we don't want any spills. If this stuff gets everywhere we will literally all be on fire in a few minutes when I show you how to set this stuff off.”

Joseph pulls out a small mixing bowl from under the table, and you peek underneath at the supplies. Must have been something the professor went over the first week of class. You should probably take some time before the end of the week seeing what else you missed out on. You pour both vials into the bowl, and Joseph mixes them slowly. The bowls and stirring stick are both made of an odd black stone that you don't recognize. If it can resist the heat of thermite, this is going to be impressive to behold. Professor Fenright walks to the front of the class.
>>
“In a moment I'm going to hand out some magnesium ribbon. You can't ignite this stuff with a match, you'll need my blowtorch for it. I'll go around to each table to set off the reaction. Under any sort of pressure this stuff would explode all over the place. Today we'll be applying our lab safety skills for the first time. That means goggles on, sleeves rolled up or buttoned down, hair tied back and desks tidy. If I can trust you with this, I can trust you with the thermite bombs after school for a demonstration out in the field.”

He waits for everyone to put on their goggles and slips a length of magnesium ribbon into each pile of powder, lighting it and moving on. With the goggles on everything is tinted dark, but the thermite still shines brightly. Without your goggles on you might go blind, but you sit back and watch the thermite burn, melt and bubble gently in the bowl. Joseph has no interest in it, grumbling as he looks at his notebook, unable to see clearly enough to draw.

As the reactions start to come to an end Professor Fenright walks around nudging the active piles of thermite to break them apart a bit more. Once they've all burned out he removes his own goggles and smiles.

“You are all officially certified as mad scientists. I want you to study chapter one before the end of the week so we can take the test on the fundamentals of chemistry and matter, and remember to bring a change of clothes with you when you come to class. Starting tomorrow we'll begin the first experiment portion of the class, so come up with something interesting to research and report on. Class dismissed.”

People start to head out of the room one by one, and Joseph packs up in a hurry, running off after the vampire girl. Professor Fenright looks at you knowingly and nods a bit, gesturing for you to come to his desk. You pack up your bag and rise to your feet.

You approach Fenright's desk and he sits down, spinning around on his chair to sit backwards on it and turning to face you again.

“Alright, so first things first. I've got your syllabus and stuff all set to go.”

He hands you a small stack of papers.

“I need you to sign off on a few consent forms and waivers. We do real science here, and sometimes real science can be dangerous. I don't want to be the one getting in trouble if someone else does something dumb though.”

You nod and slip the stack into your bag, and he chuckles a bit.

“How's Meliora treating you? Your roommate, that is. I was the one who picked you to room with her. Mysterious transfer student and all that. It seemed fitting.”

You nod slightly and make sure no one is in the room listening in.

“Why would you pick me to room with her though? I thought the boys dorms were, you know... for boys.”

Fenright shrugs a bit.

“There are some technicalities involved. She's an android, for instance, so she's technically genderless. She spent all summer excited for school, but she was always withdrawn and didn't socialize much. I figured, why not put her in a dorm with a boy, someone who, according to his student file, might be the only human on campus who wouldn't consider her a freak or just another golem? But like any father, I worry about my little girl.”

He lets out a prolonged sigh, hanging his head.

“I'm a failure as a parent... This is all I can do, try to rig the situation so she ends up around people who aren't me who can help her grow and develop...”

He looks you in the eye. His eyes are watering, and this is rapidly growing awkward.

>Things have been fine, and I'll do what I can

“Things have been alright for the most part. I'm doing what I can. I mean, we're roommates, I want to get along with her instead of being murdered in my sleep.”

Fenright nods a bit and you cut him off before he can speak.

“That said, you made her like this. She's a teenage girl in high school, and you obviously care a great deal about her. As cliché as it sounds, she's at that age, and she doesn't have years of experience socializing to help her make sense of things.”

Fenright sighs a bit and nods again, hanging his head.

“You're mostly right. She hacked her own programming upon waking up and rewrote it in an entirely new language, and then she started closing down subroutines that she didn't see the point of. I've managed to decode most of it, but... it's like she cut off parts of her own mind. I think lately she's been reactivating or rewriting parts of that code, but she's also an evolving AI designed to simulate the human mind. I hope you'll forgive her for how she acts sometimes.”

He pulls out his wallet and opens it up, smiling as he looks at something inside it. Probably a picture of Meliora. You don't make any extra effort to see for yourself though.

“Well, that's about all I needed to know. She's been avoiding me so I haven't been able to check on her. It's good to know she's in good hands though.”

He rises to his feet and smiles cheerfully.

“Just don't hurt her or you'll have a lab accident. I mean, it's fine if she's trying to force herself on you as your girlfriend or something, but don't hurt her feelings on purpose, alright? That's all I ask.”

You smirk a bit and sling your bag over your shoulder.

“So I shouldn't tease the tsundere android girl? I think you've lost your Japanophile credit.”

You turn and head for the door, and Professor Fenright calls out after you.

“I'm her father, it's what I'm supposed to say! Also, I mean it! I mean, yes, it would be adorable and hilarious if you did it, but... but don't! I am her father and I say so!”

You walk out of the classroom chuckling to yourself. Professor Fenright is quite the character. Maybe you can make use of his love of cliches at a later date or something. You check your schedule for your next class and groan. Math and then Medieval History. You can handle Medieval History, it actually might be pretty fun if your last two classes were any indication, but you don't see how math is going to be enjoyable.

You could cut class and try to figure out this whole “student file” thing, you suppose. It doesn't help having that sort of information floating around where people can get to it. You could also try to dig up some blackmail while you're at it, get some leverage for the shitstorms you just know are going to come your way in the future. Then again, cutting class could lead to some serious trouble. You've got the spare hall pass, but you don't need a detention today when you've got Meliora and Sammy both counting on you being free after school.

You head off to your math class and make a note to find the file and deal with it. When you walk into the room you notice someone sitting there that you recognize. Tobias, sitting in the back of the class and looking like he's already about to fall asleep. You glance around and don't see anyone else you recognize.

You head over to the empty chair next to Tobias and sit down, taking out a notepad. He doesn't seem to notice you at first, and when he does he yawns loudly and smiles.

“Oh, hey there. You're that guy in hunting class, right? I don't remember if I caught your name.”

You nod a bit and smile.

“Oliver.”

Tobias pulls out his own notebook.

“Well, don't mind me. I plan on sleeping through this one. This teacher always puts me to sleep.”

A slim, petite woman walks into the room and closes the door, sighing as she heads for the blackboard.

“Hello, class. For our new student, my name is Professor Cowan.”

She starts to write on the board and Tobias settles in, ready for a nap. Professor Cowan begins to drone on about trigonometry for a few minutes before turning towards the class. Her eyes are glowing softly, and one by one students begin to slump against their desks. You feel your eyes grow heavy, but your glasses continue to pull through for you and you don't fall asleep. The only other students who don't immediately crumple are a pair near the front who you don't recognize.

You lean back in your chair and relax, looking at the teacher and the two students as discretely as you can without injuring yourself. When you find a comfortable position and fall still, Professor Cowan's eyes stop glowing and the two students stand up.

“Alright, that takes care of that. Now, to business.”

One of the students grabs the back of her head and yanks, pulling off some kind of mask. Underneath she has long black hair down to her waist, and she starts speaking in a strange, gasping voice.

“We desire another one.”

The other student removes his mask, revealing the same black hair and using a similar voice.

“Yes, another one.”

Professor Cowan sighs softly.

“I can't give you another one. We have contracts for a reason. Acceptable losses are one thing, but I can't hand over any more students to you for a few months.”

The girl shudders and writhes for a moment.

“Unacceptable. We will take one.”

Professor Cowan pulls a kiwi from her pocket and begins to remove the skin, using one of her nails like a knife.

“If you want me to call security then I will. Face it, you can either slow down or lose your supply entirely.”

The boy steps forward.

“You are meddling. We do not tolerate meddling.”

Professor Cowan tosses the skin of the kiwi aside and takes a bite out of it.

“Actually, I'm being kind. I put them to sleep so we could negotiate. If I wake them up, you'll get in some serious trouble.”

The boy takes a slow step back and writhes, and Professor Cowan smirks.

“Do you have what I asked for?”

The girl twitches.

“The book was taken. We cannot locate it.”

Professor Cowan's fingers tense a bit, and she squeezes the kiwi.

“Alright. Fine. Ancient tomes of arcane lore not meant for human eyes go missing all the time, right?”

She sighs softly.
>>
“You guys have no idea how hard it is being a witch these days... All the good bookshops can't keep their fronts open anymore. Now I'm stuck with you guys, trying to track down a good spellbook.”

The boy nods a bit.

“Give us a child and we will give you what you ask for. We will find the tome. We will bring it to you.”

The girl steps forward.

“Two tomes. One for the inconvenience.”

Professor Cowan shakes her head.

“I need to think about this. Maybe I can find something else to trade you. I make a mean chocolate pudding. No, seriously, it's pretty brutal. I once made a batch and it nearly ate my cat.”

The students chatter for a moment and put their masks back on, sitting down, and Professor Cowan grumbles to herself. She waves her hand and some of the students begin to wake up a bit as she resumes the lesson, her tone monotonous and the material pretty dry.

You slip your phone out of your pocket slowly and hide it behind your notepad as you check it. The screen flashes twice before turning on, and your phone politely informs you that it has downloaded all of your textbooks for you based on the class schedule you put into it last night. It also goes on to say that it has installed some helpful programs to mentor you on the various topics, from language comprehension and obscure Latin phrases to mnemonic devices to help you memorize your math concepts. At the end of the message it tells you that the study tools are from Meliora and she hopes they find you well. You somehow doubt that she sent them, but it's nice to know your phone is looking out for you.

You open up the math textbook and your phone adjusts itself, disguising itself as the book and using the pages as flexible screens. You bring up the current lesson while your phone scans your notes, and it starts to compile notes on the current topic in your style, matching it fairly well for the most part. While you don't want to start relying on this thing too much in case it breaks or Meliora pulls the plug at some point, it'll be handy for catching up and excelling in your classes.

The rest of the lesson passes fairly quickly while you get to know the features your phone has upgraded itself with. The sound system got another remodel, and you learn that the nanomachines inside it have permeated the entirety of the device, allowing it to repair itself from almost any damage. It can also reconfigure itself into a variety of different shapes, mostly themed around common items found in a school.
>>
You pocket your phone once more and pat your pocket gently. Once you get back to your room you can probably use the translator to help you get a jump start on deciphering the spell book, but you also have to be careful not to tip Meliora off as to what you're planning. There's bound to be a way around it. As the lesson comes to an end, Professor Cowan looks at you for a moment as though trying to confirm something, before shaking her head, unconvinced of whatever she was trying to work out. You're probably safe for now, although next time you have math class you should probably be more discrete.

You head for Medieval History and leave Tobias and the rest of the sleeping students behind. You spot a few of the vampire girls heading your way, passing through on their way to their next class. They seem to be moving with purpose rather than strutting their way through the halls and showing off like you would expect from them.

You decide to head to class and ignore them for now. Vampire power struggles are something you're interested in, but for now you need to worry about keeping your head down long enough to not die the moment you step out of line. You're not disappointed when you get to class though. The moment you walk in you lock eyes with Sammy, who perks up and smiles at you. You take a seat beside her and she grins, blushing a bit. It's almost like the encounter with Mark never happened, she looks great, and you probably have either Meliora or Angie to thank for it.

“I didn't know we had this class together.”

You nod slightly.

“Neither did I. It'll be nice to have a study partner for it though.”

Sammy pulls out her notebook and pens and starts organizing her desk.

“Same here. It's a pretty tough course, actually. There's a lot of studying involved, but there are also lots of assignments for extra credit, like putting on performances from the time period, or competing in jousting matches. The teacher is all about immersion.”

You're about to reply when a man wearing a suit of armor walks into the room. At least, you presume there's a man in there. Considering where you are, there might not be. Secretly you hope that your teacher is a haunted suit of armor from the medieval period, inhabited by the soul of a knight or something. His British accent fills you with hope.

“Hello, class! Today we will be focusing our attention on the social structure of medieval Europe, and we will start by reorganizing the room. Everyone stand up and grab a role from my desk, and no peeking in the envelope until everyone has one! Then we will move the desks around and I will explain the roles a bit before I present some challenges or situations for you to act out. Whenever you use modern logic to tackle a problem, I will penalize you. Think like your role. Immerse yourself in it. Now, everyone grab an envelope.”

“Splendid. Now, you five will be the nobility and those in positions of authority. Two of you will be lesser nobles, one will be a religious leader, and two of you will be greater nobles. I will play the role of king for the time being, and later, when I am inevitably deposed, one of you will rise to the throne. You each have a shot at it. Now...”

You take the second card and hesitate for a moment before turning it over and, upon finding the seam on the paper, unfolding it. It reads as follows:

You are the Archbishop. Your duty is to the church, not to the kingdom, and everyone has to listen to what you have to say. They don't need to follow it, necessarily, but if they don't they risk losing favor with the church. Your secret is that you are an orphaned bastard child of the current king raised by the church, and if you can get him to recognize you properly or forge the appropriate documents, you'll be third in line for the throne. Your greatest asset is God. God may or may not exist, but you are his voice in the world as far as everyone here is concerned. While this does mean you must be pious and uphold the commonly known virtues, your ability to interpret the word of God means you have plenty of room to impose your own will. Your income is derived from tithes and donations, and people will expect to be able to buy off their sins through you. You are allowed to deny them or increase the price, but be wary of how you use this power or else you'll begin to upset the wrong people.

You fold it back up and immediately pocket it to conceal the information you received, and the other nobles are quick to do the same. The teacher moves to the front of the classroom.

“Students, your roles should have a symbol on them. If you have the red crest, you are with Lord Norton here, if you have a blue crest, Lord Pike, green is Count Barton and yellow is Countess Banks.”

One of the students raises her hand.

“Um... e-excuse me, I've got... I've got a cross on mine...”

The teacher nods.

“Then you will be serving under Archbishop Spencer as an abbess. Gather with the members of your house and get to know each other a bit, and we'll get started.”
>>
The nobles move to the corners of the room, with Sammy joining up with Lord Norton, leaving you with the center to sit and talk with the girl. She seems particularly shy, refusing to make eye contact with you as you talk with her. You manage to learn that her name is Catherine, but Cathy is fine, and that she's worried about her role and doing a good job. You've got some political sway, but unless you can get Catherine to speak the words you tell her to, you might not be able to use that power well.

Guys, we should get Angie in on this. Tell her we got Archbishop in our class, we get to make up our own theological philosophies. We can go full Masonic with the reverence of death. "All come to an end. What matters is the impression you will leave behind. Harbor the scorn of others, and scorn is all you shall find in the minds of others when you pass. Harbor the adoration of those around you, however, and you shall be thusly adored when you walk with the Lord. >>
You rise to your feet and take a moment to put yourself in the right mindset. Betrayed by your own father and cast aside as a child, then raised within the church. You don't know how you learned the truth, but you know it now, and you feel compelled to take the position that rightfully belongs to you. You are Archbishop Spencer, an heir to the throne and the most important religious leader in the nation. You turn to Catherine and smile.

“I will do everything in my power to assist you, my child. Fret not, for the light of our god is with you. Though you may feel fear now, you are not alone, and you will succeed in this task. Have faith, in me and in our god.”

Catherine stares at you for a few moments, before smiling slightly.

“I-I'll try...”

You nod and head over to the teacher's desk.

“What religion are we basing all of this on? Catholicism or something?”

He shakes his head and offers you a book.

“It's based loosely on the Christian beliefs of the era since those were most dominant in the region we're studying, but with a few alterations here and there. Only the church knows the exact wording of the bible because books are so scarce, but most people will know generally what the rules of the faith are if they know anything about the Christian faith.”

You nod a bit and flip through the pages of the book. It seems like an ordinary bible, with some of the pages covered with with annotations, commentary or sections crossed out entirely. It'll take a while to decipher the whole thing.

“Can I make up my own faith instead?”

The teacher chuckles a bit.

“I suppose you could, so long as it's nothing too extreme. Try to use that as a template though. We want something accessible to the masses, and something that helps enforce the political ideology of the time. Divine right, and so on.”

You nod and sit back down with Catherine, passing her the book.

“We've got a religion to found.”
>>

Catherine picks up the book and starts to flip through it. She pulls out a set of reading glasses and begins speed reading. At least, you presume it's speed reading and not just pretending to speed read. That's a pretty useful thing to know though.

You sit back a bit.

“So we're going to need to figure this religion out at some point. How about we get together sometime and puzzle this out? I'm not gonna be able to put all the pieces together myself, and it'll be a chance for you to work on your confidence.”

Catherine pauses and looks up at you slowly.

“U-Um... well... I mean... s-sure...”

She fidgets and closes the book.

“When would you want to do that?”

A good question. You've busy this afternoon for a bit with Meliora, you might get dragged into the track meet with Sammy, and then you've got the party tonight. You might be able to squeeze some time in, but then you probably won't have much time to check your book.

You shrug slightly.

“How about tomorrow after school? If you're free we can get together in the library and figure this out.”

Catherine nods slightly and smiles nervously.

“I-I can do that, yeah... I'll see you there.”

She looks at the teacher for a moment, who is simply sitting back watching people chatter away, and then back at you.

“D-Do you think we need to stay...? I don't think we'll get to any of the challenges...”

You shrug slightly and glance at him. You can't really read him with that helmet on, but then again, he might be ghost armor or something. Given how everyone is just milling about exchanging names and numbers, or goofing off with their house, you don't really see what he's waiting for. Just as you're about to ask, he stands up.

“Now then, let's begin with the first challenge. I'll exempt the archbishop and abbess from this one since they need more time to get things in order. Lord Pike, you've received a letter informing you that one of your peasants recently stole bread from Countess Banks. There was a shipment to her home, and one of your men decided to help himself to some. Everyone already knows about the incident, but I have special instructions for some key players. Members of House Pike, take the blue envelopes, and House Banks, take the yellow. For the other two houses, name a representative and I'll give them each a letter.”

The teacher turns to you.

“You can leave early if you like, or sit around to watch this play out.”

If your going to do a stand in religon its going to have to be christian lite, i doubt the prof will let us do a big old blood based religion or anything with too many pagan overtones.

If you really want to tweek it, then you need massive need for repentance (e.g. origonal sin) and an enemy to blame. (The devil, muslims, mongols).
>>
You move your desk next to the teacher's and smile.

“I want to watch this play out.”

Catherine hustles to your side, dragging her desk along, and sits beside you to observe.

What unfolds next is actually pretty intense. You don't get a chance to listen in to the different sides, as you presume you'll be able to next time as a religious leader, but you do get to see the drama. Sammy is chosen as the representative for House Norton, and apparently she saw the theft being committed. Watching her stand up for justice is pretty endearing, and she even makes an impassioned speech about how the criminal should be dealt with. When she sits back down she winks at you, pleased with herself for silencing the room. Maybe people are just surprised that she has a spine after all. The class ends before the challenge is completed, but when the bell to end the class rings the teacher stands up and applauds, cheering.

“Well done! Well done indeed! We'll resume next class where we left off, and we'll continue with just the four noble houses for now until the archbishop and abbess have finalized what they're working on. Class dismissed, no homework today.”

People start to grab their bags and move their desks back to where they belong, and Sammy moves to your side once you're ready to go.

“I'm starving. What do you feel like eating?”

You smile a bit and consider your options. You opt to hold back the flirtatious response for now and save it for a better occasion. There will be plenty of time for that in the future.

“I dunno. Whatever you want is fine by me. How about we split something?”

Sammy blushes and nods a little.

“That works. Uh... Well, how about we get some burgers then? Burgers, fries, a couple of milkshakes... We could head up to the roof again and take in the view.”

You nod slightly and head for the door, with Sammy following right behind you. Walking around school with her on your arm would be fun, but it's also a big risk to be taking while you can't defend her or yourself properly. She seems a little saddened by the lack of an offer, but she also looks like she understands why.

You head for the cafeteria and grab your food, piling your meal into a paper bag while Sammy does the same. You could head for the roof with her, have a little lunch date and goof off with her, but you've also got a laundry list of things to check in on.

You turn and head for the dorms.

“Let's head to my room and eat there. I've got a few things to check on, but I don't want to leave you out of it.”

You glance over your shoulder at Sammy, who is bright red.

“Both of us... alone... in your room...?”

You shake your head.

“We won't be alone. We'll have each other.”

Sammy slowly walks to your side.

“Right, but... Nevermind, sure, that sounds good to me.”

She smiles nervously as she walks with you back to your room. She stays quiet the whole way there, glancing around from time to time in case anyone is following. By the time you reach your room you're already alone, and Sammy seems incredibly nervous. You open the door and motion for her to enter while you hold the door, and she heads for the couch to sit down, looking around at everything.

“So this is your room...? Why does it smell like motor oil...?”

You pause and inhale, but you can't smell anything of the sort. It might just be Meliora's side of the room. You notice that Sammy has shifted a bit, her tail visible beneath the bottom of her skirt. She sits down and gets comfortable, taking out her burger and biting into it while you sit beside her, digging in.

You grab your bag of food and set it on the floor, moving a bit closer to Sammy and shifting so that she can sit on your lap. She hesitates at first, before sitting sideways on your lap and munching her way through her burger, tail wagging. You savor the moment and give her a soft squeeze before focusing on your food. The burger is pretty good, and the longer you spend eating, the less time you can spend using your hands for other things.

Once your burger is devoured you start on the fries, occasionally feeding one to Sammy. She closes her eyes each time you offer one, opening her mouth wide and chomping on them. She almost catches your fingers a couple of times, and you're thankful for your good reflexes. You do get a chance to see her fangs though, which is pretty neat. Her teeth look pretty sharp in this form, even though they haven't changed too much otherwise.

When you get to the milkshakes, Sammy takes the initiative, and you sit back a bit, letting her spoon feed you the milkshake. She smiles at you, blushing softly. When she accidentally spills a little bit, she looks at you for a moment before slowly leaning in and licking your cheek clean with a series of soft, affectionate laps.

“Sorry about that... All clean though.”

You nod and smirk.

“I am now, yeah.”

You gently coax Sammy off your lap and fetch your book, taking care to keep it concealed from her view for the most part.

“I need to do some studying for a little bit. How about we curl up on my bed and relax for a little bit? I'll do my studying, and you can use me as a pillow.”

You sit down on your bed, using the pillows for back support and patting the mattress beside you. Sammy gets up and walks over, blushing a bit before laying down next to you, resting her head on your lap. She removes her hair tie, her ears popping into view, and her tail wags as she gets settled. You get out your phone, open the book, and get to work, petting Sammy gently while you attempt to translate sections of the text.

You manage to piece together a few key portions of the initial text fairly easily, and as you read over your translation you gently start to stroke Sammy's ear, idly toying with it as she nuzzles against your hand.

“Welcome to the fine art of hemomancy, the practice of manipulating and using blood via magical means. Contained within this book are the secrets to obtaining anything you can desire. A word of warning. Hemomancy is about sacrifice. Slaughtering someone within your ritual circle is not the same as taking an offered life, or claiming someone as property and giving up that property to obtain something greater. The kind of sacrifice matters deeply to this craft, and you will learn the many subtle shades of it as you progress.

Before you begin summoning demons or commanding the minds of those around you, you must mark yourself as a hemomancer. The first spell contained within this book shall provide you with such a mark. It is not a physical manifestation but an imprint upon your very soul. Without it, you will be unable to perform even the most basic of spells or rituals. The spell will conjure a lesser demon who will mark your soul in exchange for a cup of your blood. It may offer you bargains and gifts, but do not be fooled. Hemomancy is about sacrifice, not about trades. You give something to the world, and the world gives you something of equal measure.”

The next portions of the text are about discipline and respect for life, how the greatest sacrifice and the strongest power comes from willing partners, those who are prepared to sacrifice on your behalf solely for your gain. As you rub Sammy's back and stroke her cheek you find it oddly fitting to be reading this portion with her beside you. You don't intend to abuse her affections, but if you can work out something mutually rewarding then it might be worth asking her for some help.
>>
You flip to the first spell and read the list of ingredients and preparations. There aren't any special requirements except for the full moon to be high in the sky, and for you to spill your blood into a cup while chanting before a candle. The candle will be easy to come by, but you'll have to memorize the spell or carry your book around with you to the place you plan to use the spell. Once you spill your blood and chant the words, the demon will rise from the candle flame long enough for it to sip from your blood and give you the mark. The chant itself is a little complex, but not overly so. The main issue is the moon.

You close the book and set it aside with your phone, and Sammy takes that as a sign to move closer. She leans against your chest, resting her head over your heart, tail wagging happily. You kiss the top of her head, and her tail wags faster.

“Sammy, what does it mean if I bite you on the ear? I mean, I know it's embarrassing to talk about, but...”

She blushes brightly and hesitates.

“It's... a sign that you're taking me as yours. That I belong to and with you. If I were to bite you on the ear, it might mean something to me, but it doesn't have that same impact for you. It's why I called you a pervert... It's not something you should do unless you're with your mate... Well, lover would be the correct term, but... you know what I mean.”

You nod slightly and smile at her.

You stroke her hair gently.

“Hold still a sec.”

Sammy looks at you, blushing brightly, and nods, closing her eyes and waiting. You lean in slowly and hug her tightly. You can feel your heartbeat pick up a bit as you consider the implications of what you're about to do. You take a slow breath, and open your mouth...

When Sammy sits up suddenly she bumps you in the nose, face scarlet as she scoots back a bit. She stares right at you, hands moving to cover her ears, and she lets out a soft whimper. You rub your nose gently and her whimpering gets louder.

“I'm sorry! I just... I panicked... I want to, but it's a big deal, and we only just met, and things are moving so fast, and...”

You pull her close, clutching her to your chest.

“Sammy. Relax. You just said you want to, and I'm not going to make this some kind of binding agreement. Think of this as more... me expressing my intent. There's still a lot to take care of, and I want to make sure your parents are fine with it too. But I want you to know where we stand with each other. If you don't want this, then that's fine. But if you do... don't be afraid.”

Sammy nods slightly and falls still, and you lean in and bite her ear firmly. You're careful not to hurt her, but then you realize that werewolves do this while shifted, so you bite a little bit harder until you feel her shudder. You withdraw carefully and look her in the eye. She's blushing like mad, but her eyes are a little hazy and unfocused. Then you remember that werewolves get wild when the full moon approaches, right about when Sammy lazily leans in for a kiss.

“Oliver...~”

You lay down beside her, careful not to press up against her, and sigh.

“Sammy? Are you alright? I know things got a bit wild there, but... I couldn't stop myself. I wanted to make you feel good. If things went too far, I'm sorry.”

Sammy shifts a bit and sits up slightly, turning towards you. She doesn't look like she's going to cry, but she does look a little hurt.

“I... I'll be alright.”

She pauses and looks down at herself, pulling her shirt closed and laying back down, curling up a bit.

“I just... I was scared of going too fast, and you told me to trust you, and then... this... I know you didn't mean to set me off, but...”

You nod slightly and hug her, holding her close.

“I know. I got caught up in the moment. You did too though. You were the one who wanted to touch me down there.”

Sammy blushes and hides her face against one of your pillows, muttering her response. Her tail twitches a bit, and you just hold her close.

“Regardless... I didn't mean to hurt you, if I did. If you need space, that's fine.”

Sammy adjusts her bra and shirt a bit.

“I... I'm gonna go wash up.”

She sits up and looks at you for a moment.

“...I trust you, Oliver.”

She smiles sweetly, rising from the bed and turning to give you a peck on the cheek.

“I'll... I promise to be quick...”

You sit up and nod as she heads for the bathroom.

“Go right ahead. Do what you need to do. I don't have a hairdrier or anything though, so try not to get your hair wet. I'll clean up out here in the mean time. If you need anything let me know.”

Sammy nods and heads off, leaving you to take care of things. You change out of your pants and underwear and take a moment to assess the damage she did to your back. You're not bleeding profusely, but she did scratch you up a fair amount. You lay out some fresh clothes and fold your sheets up to be washed later, rubbing a little ointment on your cuts to prevent any vampires from smelling your blood.

You grab your phone and check the time with a groan. You've got enough time for Sammy to rinse off before the bell rings, but you spent so long ravishing each other that you won't have any time to grab a shower yourself. You clean yourself off as best as you can and put on a change of clothes and some deodorant. With any luck you'll have time before the party for a proper shower, though you've got a gym class after lunch anyway. Sammy comes out of the bathroom after a few minutes, blushing and sighing.

“I need to run back to my room to change. I... I can tell the other werewolves will be able to smell it on my clothes... I'll see you after school though, right...? At the track meet...?”

“I've gotta do something for my roommate after class, but it won't take long. I might miss the first few minutes but I'll definitely be there.”

Sammy smiles and kisses you softly before heading for the door.

“I'll see you later then...”

She walks out and dashes off down the hall. The lunch period is ending in a matter of minutes, and this might be your last shred of free time until the end of the day.

You grab your book and head for the bathroom, stripping down and hiding the tome under the sink with your soap and spare toothpaste tubes. You shift a few things around to conceal it and hop in the shower, just long enough to rinse your body off. You can hear the bell ring as you dry off, and you tug on your clothes, grab your bag, and run out the door to get to the gym on time.

Your next class is gymnastics, and when you finish getting changed and putting your stuff away you find you're the only boy in a class of fourteen students. The teacher looks rather amused when you arrive, tapping her foot. She looks like a former ballet dancer or something, lean and graceful. The other girls, two of which you think you recognize as vampires, are giggling at you.

“Welcome to gymnastics, Mr. Spencer. I'm Coach Paris. Seeing as you're the only male student in the group, would you prefer to join the girls in their routines? Or were you anticipating there would be a boy's group that you could take part in? I'm sure I could come up with something for you to do.”

You nod slightly for a moment as you consider her question properly.

“Coach Paris, right? I'm confident enough in my masculinity that you could put me in pink and I wouldn't bat an eye. A real man doesn't care about what is asked of him, only how well he does it.”

She nods and turns to one of the girls.

“Exercise four, Paula.”

Paula nods and does a series of twirls, rolls and a flip. It's then that you realize what this class is. This is no mere beginner class. This is the class girls who have been practicing since they were five sign up for so they don't have to sweat outside and can feel like their gymnastics classes were worth something. Coach Paris turns to you.

“Can you do what she just did?”

You look at Paula, then at Coach Paris, and smile.

“Nope. I don't have exercise four memorized. That said...”

You stretch for a moment to limber up and test your ankle. You don't want to stress it, but you won't have to if you can get it just right. You start with a small jump, then a short run, and transition into a series of flips and mid-air twists, ending with a tumble and a leap before bouncing back and doing the same in reverse, coming to a stop right in front of Coach Paris. The girls look impressed, and Coach Paris has gone from amused to intrigued.

“You were favoring one leg a bit, but nice work. An excellent starting point. We'll work on refining what you already know and go from there.”

She turns and starts to walk off.

“Today we'll be working on fundamentals. Limber up, ladies. And Mr. Spencer. Once you're all set we'll spend the class tumbling and leaping. I want clean transitions and control.”

You spend the remainder of the class doing just that. Coach Paris calls you out on protecting your injured leg, but she never forces you to make excessive use of it. By the end of the class you've earned some respect from the coach, as well as from the girls in the class. As you head for the locker room, Coach Paris stops you.

“Mr. Spencer, I'd like to have a quick word with you.”

You slow to a stop and turn around.

“What's up, Coach?”

She chuckles a bit.

“We don't often have guys who join the gymnastics class, and straight guys? Even less often. I'm just warning you now that there are going to be some rumors about you.”

You shrug nonchalantly.

“People will think what they want. I know better. I'm in this class because it fits what I want to do. I enjoy running around, flipping, jumping, that kind of thing. I like being active like that, and nothing else lets me do it.”

Coach Paris nods.

“Fair enough. Well, if you need any help with anything, let me know. And there's an acrobatics club after school that I run that you might be interested in. Less twirling, more rope swings and obstacle courses. If you're interested, we have our next meet tomorrow afternoon.”

“I'll think about it. I've got a study session tomorrow afternoon. I'll have to show up a little late, if that's alright.”

Coach Paris nods.

“That's fine with me. See you there.”

She turns and walks off, and you head for the lockers with the distinct impression that there was subtext to her comments you didn't quite pick up on quickly enough. You wash up and get changed, heading for your next class. Literature. You check the text you got from Sammy yesterday about her schedule and smile. She has Lit next too. You head for the classroom, ready for another lesson with good company.

When you walk into the room and spot Mark your anticipation immediately fades. He doesn't seem to notice you, face buried in a book. Some philosophy text by the look of it. Art of War? Yep. That would be the one. You head for a seat as far from him as you can get and start praying to anyone who'll listen that your two showers were enough to get Sammy's scent off you. The teacher clears her throat and smiles. She's a sweet old lady from the look of things, dressed in knitted clothing with little cats on it.

“Alright class, today we will be writing out first poems! Isn't that exciting? So dust off those thinking caps and feel free to get creative. Poetry can be rigidly defined by rules, or freeform. I'd prefer if you used a standard form like we learned last week, but anything goes. We'll do some readings at the end of class. Go on now.”

You get to work on a poem. You decide to get a bit clever with the assignment and work on a haiku, but you can't think of anything off the top of your head. You look at Mark and consider delivering a subtle jab, but he already tried to kill you once today. You opt instead for something to give to Sammy later, or maybe Meliora depending on how you spin it.

“Blossoming flower,
On this, a cold autumn day,
Creates a second spring”

You look it over. It didn't take you long to write, but it's not bad. You look around the room at everyone else struggling to find the right words and realize something. Maybe Sammy isn't here because she's avoiding Mark. It's a valid concern, and you make a note to ask her about it later. You spend the rest of the class time trying to recall the chant from the spell for tonight. You remember portions of it, but you'll probably need the book for the rest of it, and you still need a candle.

About halfway through the class the teacher stands and heads for the chalkboard, writing down some notes about etiquette and constructive criticism, as well as some rules for the readings. She returns to her desk and smiles brightly, and some of the students start to lower their pencils.

“Now then. Who would like to volunteer to read for us?”

You don't raise your hand, but you see Mark raise his. The teacher calls on him and he rises to his feet. His legs are a little wobbly, and he uses his desk to steady himself. Seems like getting the shit kicked out of him really did something. Neat. He clears his throat.

“Fresh snow. Fresh blood. The hunt is on. Lingering scents cut through the cold air. A crunch. Movement. A hint of brown fur behind the downed tree. We follow. The air bites, and we bite back. Distance closed. Slippery prey. We move in formation. Cornered prey. Distance closed. A crunch. Fresh blood. The hunt is over.”

The teacher applauds, as do some of the students, and Mark turns slowly with a smile on his face, one of pride, until he spots you. There's a brief flash of anger, but he quickly regains his facade and sits back down.

“Wonderful, wonderful! Thank you for that poem, Mark. Very visceral imagery. Thank you. Does anyone have any comments for him? I didn't see anyone else volunteer, so I'll have to start calling on people after this.”

>Unless you're not human you're not going to try to chase it till it dies of exhaustion are you
Actually that's how humans hunted before we made tools to expedite the process. It's why our stamina tends to be extremely high compared to a lot of animals - we'd literally run our prey until it collapsed and died.
>>
>>43902358
That's what i meant

>>
>>43902358
True, though anon does have a point. It was a slow thing, not a rapid-paced thing with little thought as Mark described.

Although we could also comment on how it's that very disconnect that shows how an animal thinks different from a man.
>>
>>43902383
Yepo I fucked up
Unless you're human*
>>
You raise your hand.

“I'd like to read next. And I have some commentary. While I did like the poem for its imagery, it didn't fit well with the staccato pace. It was a series of still images rather than a fluid narrative. Maybe I'm just limited in how I'm thinking of things. Now that I think about it, it does evoke a more primitive mind, something animalistic. Perhaps a wolf on the hunt or something. On second thought, it does fit together nicely if you think of it that way. Wild, primal, bloodthirsty. Nicely done.”

The teacher applauds again, and Mark glances at you. It's hard to tell if he's glaring at you or simply regarding you for a moment. Your backhanded compliment might have been taken as an actual compliment.

“A wonderful critique! And now, would you mind sharing your poem?”

You rise to your feet while correcting your haiku, clear your throat, and pause. You can feel your phone shifting in your pocket, and you set it on your desk as it shifts to speaker mode. You lean down slightly and whisper.

“...Japanese flute or guitar music. I'm reading a haiku.”

The phone obliges, playing what you presume is authentic oriental music. It could just be making it up on the spot for all you know, but it fits the moment. You read your haiku, pausing between lines for effect.

“Blossoming flower,
On this, a cold autumn day,
Creates spring anew.”

The song dies down slowly and you put your phone away. The teacher claps for you again and you sit down. Mark immediately gets to his feet.

“Short, sweet and meaningful. A little corny if you ask me, but it's a decent poem.”

He looks over his shoulder at you.

“Oliver certainly has a way of stirring emotion with his words. I've seen some of his other work before, and it was pretty moving.”

The teacher smiles at you.

“Well, I'll look forward to seeing that in his work in the future. Now then...”
>>
The rest of the class is mostly people reading and critiquing each other, but you can't help wondering what Mark is up to. Either he's raising expectations to screw you over down the line, or he honestly doesn't remember this morning at all. You don't really know how to approach it without actively bringing it up.

I think Mark's a simple person. He didn't know how to take our commentary, he wasn't going to stay silent for ours, but he didn't want to turn around our possible compliment with a direct insult. The whole situation confused him too much to be a proper dick.

Still going to gut him for blood and sacrifice his soul to satan though.

I don't trust the robot to not piece together the gist of it. If we're going to ask for her help, we may as well tell her straight up that we're going to be a blood mage soon.
