Twitter: https://twitter.com/Line_of_HeroesArchives: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Tide%20of%20AgesNow the white wolf's return is more common knowledge among the clan, there's no escaping a confrontation with it, or at least, you have to be seen to try. People are already starting to resent you, after your promise of 'mild winters' turned out to be a load of crap, but while you can't do much to fight the diseases currently ravaging half your people, you can certainly allay their fears about a living beast. So with a great deal of attention on you, you take your spear and head into the hills that bracket the clan. The first night after you set out, the wolf approaches your tiny, guttering fire and sits down on its haunches."One year and I've learned a lot," it says. The beast speaks plainly, bluntly and with a trace of impatience about its tone. "I thought your pack would tear itself apart before the summer, but no. You held it together. And somehow, you became the alpha, despite another being stronger than you. That took me by surprise, but the more I watched, the more it became clear to me. You lead your pack to better hunting grounds; they followed you because you gave them more food. That was an important lesson, I think." It nods its great head, considering. "And then you brought back the river. That was VERY surprising, but told me a lot. For instance, I learned how to do this." A shiver runs through the animal, as its form contorts, stretching in some areas and compacting in others. Its muzzle shrinks and its fur retracts, but its ears and tail remain, as does the yellow of its eyes and a shaggy, wild head of white hair. "Brrrgh... You humans... How do you not freeze before you can put on the fur of other creatures?" It shuffles close to the fire and looks up at you. He seems to realise he's said a lot and now seems to be waiting for you to respond.
>>43913953"Why are you stalking my people?" you ask, locking eyes with the beast. "And what do you intend for my daughter?"The wolf raises his eyebrow. "To watch and to watch," he replies. "Didn't I tell you this before? You humans are interesting; you're weak and slow, but you make fire and make your claws, rather than growing them and you burn your meat before eating it and wear the furs of other creatures, as you can't grow your own. I chose to watch your pup because she is new and will be seeing everything for the first time." He pauses and looks a little smug. "I learned to talk much faster than her."You try to hold the wolf's gaze, but he seems to tire of the attention, staring back and you find you are unable to meet his eyes for long. Their intensity is just too strong, too much like he's deciding if he's hungry enough to eat you. "Your bitch has another one on the way, doesn't she," he says. It's not a question. "I think I'll watch that one too and see if there's anything I've missed. After that... Well, we'll see. Now... I have questions. First: Why did you come looking for me, especially alone? That's stupid of you; I could kill you easily. Second: What is your interest in the river? She's started looking like you humans. She's never done that before. I want to know what she wanted to know."How will you answer?>I came to tell you to leave>I came to find out what you know>I came to be friends>I came to kill you>The river has a name, you know>Who knows what she's thinking?>She wanted to learn about us>She and I desired one another

>>43913963>I came to find out what you know>I came to be friends>The river has a name, you know>She wanted to learn about us"I find it funny that you question why I came looking for you given your curiosity about us. My people are just as intrested in you as you are in us. I also came because you and me have a shared history and I would like to be friends, there is no reason we can't work togerther and scrach the itch of curosity we have for one another. As for the river she wants the same thing as you; to find out more about us. And calling her the river seems sort of silly you know, its like calling you the wolf, she has a name, do you? "
>>43914625Dats a good write in.
""I find it funny that you question why I came looking for you given your curiosity about us," you reply. "My people are just as intrested in you as you are in us. I also came because you and me have a shared history and I would like to be friends-"you are abruptly cut off by the wolf howling with laughter."FRIENDS?! You KILLED me, in case you forgot? Hah! Oh just when I thought I was beyond being surprised, you humans manage to do it again." He grins at you, showing that even in his human guise, he has disturbingly wolf-like teeth. "I don't think we can be friends, human, but you're just about interesting enough that it makes me want to try out something I learned from you. Since I started watching you, I've started thinking differently... Even like this, I'm not the same as you, but I can do things you cannot. So how about we trade? That's what you call it, isn't it? You give me something and in exchange, I give you something."You consider it for a moment and slowly nod. "There is no reason we can't work togerther and satisfy the curosity we have for one another. Can you teach me to shapeshift?"The wolf snorts. "Sure, when I can learn how to fly. We might look the same, but we're not, human. For starters, if I killed you, I'm fairly sure you wouldn't be able to come back." It sniffs at you and leans in over the fire, yellow eyes narrowing. "Maybe if... No, even if you could, it'd just be something you're wearing. Me, when I change, it's still 'me'. You, it'd be like wearing different clothes." He falls back onto his haunches and scratches his hair. You choose not to make any remarks about fleas.
>>43915535"As for the river," you continue, putting aside your disappointment about not being able to turn into an auroch whenever you want, "She wants the same thing as you; to find out more about us. And calling her the river seems sort of silly you know, its like calling you the wolf, she has a name, do you? "The wolf looks up and blinks. "I've never had one before. Hmm... Let's see... You're Trym, your bitch is Beren... That one up the tree is Elia... Hmm..." He grows quiet, thinking. Eventually, he speaks up. "You can call me Soqed. Mmmh, yes, that fits. So-qed. Now, we've established that we're not friends, but we're not enemies. If you people want something, they can offer me something in return." He stands and shivers. "They can start with some clothes..." He turns, falling to all fours, slipping back into his wolfen form and padding into the quiet of the night. You return to the clan with news of the wolf's true nature. A few of the young titter about his choice of name, but the elders remind them that, wet or not, the wolf could still eat them whole and have room for their friends too. That shuts them up fairly fast. The clan certainly isn't happy to still have Soqed roaming around, but grudgingly accept that he's not a threat, so long as he's not insulted.Given how fast your trip to deal with the wolf was, you can take another action this winter!>Hunt the aurochs 4d10 (Strength +Hunter)>Fish in the river 1d10+3 (Skill +Trait)>Explore the forest>Explore up the valley>Explore the hills>Continue trying to make sense of how to tame plants 1d10 (Wits)>Try and investigate something new>Make something special>See what the mood of the clan is like, talk to people and get to know them (free)>Change your active jobs and examine your inventory (free)>Other

With the business with Soqed taken care of, you can return to trying to crack the problem of the plants. You can disregard trees as too slow-growing, so that doesn't leave very much. Besides the grasses, that pretty much leaves you with grape vines, but they only climb up trees...The mood of the clan is turning decidedly sour. Only the early spring stops it from becoming downright ugly. Sickness is still rife in the clan and it's effecting the elders and the young worst. Even Grandfather Akyon is stuck in his bed, rasping and wheezing, weak and suffering. At first, you can put it aside; your work is more important, after all... But then Sera gets sick. You hunt, for your family needs food, but you can hear the whispers and see everyone's sorrowful expressions. A child so young becoming sick very seldom ends well. Still, the tribe's wild success with the hunt seems to mollify some of those complaining about the winter. Hunting is without a doubt better here and the strangers don't tax the herds either, allowing their numbers to stay stable. Your share of the meat is much, much more than enough than what you need to feed you and Beren through into the summer! We have no medicine, and no experience involving medicine. If this were the real world the only option would be to wait it out. But in this world, magic exists. Even if the magic is primitive, it gives us a second choice. It allows us to be proactive and actually try to do something as opposed to just waiting it out. And before anyone recommends something along the lines of learning medicine; 1) Our daughter is sick now, and 2) You might as well invent the flintlock while you're at it.We need to go to Nila and see if she can do anything. Your daughter's condition is what is needed to finally break you out of your obsession with all that grows.Your own carelessness and lack of preparation caused to grow sick; that much is clear. Everyone knows that the cold saps strength and with that weakness comes sickness and death. Whether one brings the other, who can say, but they go hand-in-hand more often than lovers. Your knowledge of medicine is scarce, but you can at least ensure that coming winter, your clan is less hurt by the onslaught of snow and ice. So for a time, you abandon the plants and your plans to provide for your people's food and instead turn your craftsman's hands to building something worth living in. Your inspiration comes from the Strangers' shelters, of course, but you have little knowledge of how to construct them, much less the materials they use. Copying the strangers proves to be more difficult than you anticipated. Those of your clan who have seen their shelters however, at least grasp what you are driving at, so for once, you have plenty of support for your efforts! The issue is that the aurochs hides are too heavy and still for your traditional bivouacs and deer are more scarce this far down the valley. By the end of spring, your initial attempts are not promising, but you've at least tried methods you now know DON'T work. Even Mesut and his family are interested in helping out. Strength and hunting prowess it seems, are little comfort when cold is turning your skin blue. He and his eldest son, a boy of six, set out with a handful of others to visit the strangers with gifts of food and aurochs horns, to try and learn from them.Sera's condition is, again, no worse. Indeed, as the weather warms, she seems to recover a little of her appetite - a great relief to Beren, who was beside herself with worry as Sera seemed almost to waste away. She takes to exposing the child to the warming sun whenever possible. "Perhaps, with Nila and Soqed, there's another being out there who embodies the sun?" she suggests, "If you happen to meet them, give them my thanks."

The mood of the tribe can best be described as 'sullen'. The warm summer is raising spirits and the disease passing with only a little loss of life is helping matters, as is your efforts to improve their shelters, but everyone's memories of last winter, as well as your promises that it would be mild, are causing some grumbling. A few of the elders are complaining that moving here was a mistake, while others point out that by now, the herds would be mostly hunted to a handful, had you stayed behind. Still, barring another disaster, they should stop complaining in time, especially as living here becomes more familiar. As your work on replacing the sad bivouacs with something else continues apace, Mesut and his son return, only to leave shortly after with the rest of the men from his house and a few volunteers from the tribe. They don't carry spears with them, so for a while, you're confused as to what they're up to. Then a few days later, there's a commotion from the river and you find Mesut's band carrying up the trunks of trees on their shoulders! It takes three or four men to lift just one, but they gradually bring more and more up from the river, as Mesut's boy explains to anyone who'll listen. The Strangers were pleased with their gifts and showed them their homes, having mostly forgotten the incident with Beren. Mesut had the clever idea of using trees rather than the bones of mammoths and managed to bring them so close by rolling them to the river and floating them downstream, before they halted themselves on the large bend close to the camp. Mesut seems very pleased with himself, wasting no time in trying to replicate the strangers techniques. While he works on the frame, your own attempts to make a sturdy cover progress well. A little more and you should both have something workable!Mesut has brought the tribe knowledge of lumber working. Moving tree trunks is hard work, but they make for strong (if flammable) buildings.
>>43927776Can you confirm yourself as RWB?
>>43927916Forgot my name. Sorry. Check the twitter.Sera is slowly recovering. She's no longer quite so weak, but she does spend much of her time coughing and making a mess. The disease seems to have left its mark on her, perhaps permanently. Beren doesn't speak of it. She never says anything to blame you, but you get the feeling she's possibly struggling to suppress her resentment. As midsummer approaches however, you have a visitor. Nila slowly walks into the village, obviously uncomfortable with leaving her river behind. She carries a bundle in her arms, wrapped with reeds. Of course, you go out to meet her, only for her to gently hand you what she is carrying, with a smile. The reeds are surprisingly soft... "You should give her a name," she says, shocking you somewhat. In your arms, looking up at you curiously, is a pale, baby girl with Nila's amber eyes and your red-brown hair. The group gathered around you is silent for a moment, before Beren's crowing laughter breaks the quiet. Nila kisses your cheek as the clan cheers your new child, in a somewhat restrained manner. Most of them seem very much in awe of the living river. What is your new daughter's name?
>>43927983Luthien?Also fucking Beren just laughing her ass off at us.
>>43928009Sounds like a good name
No more suggestions or support? Or are things just a bit slow at the moment?
>>43928295Think its just slow right now RWB.
>>43928295I'm the Marena guy. I'll support Luthien, make it unanimous. I think it's just a bit of a weird time, to be honest. Class and work and all
>>43927983Clara would also be a nice name, going to her pale nature...Also we may need to hunt a bit or fish for food and then get back to having some shelters.
Sorry to cut and run everyone but I totally forgot tonight my group's tabletop night. I guess we'll have to leave it there and name her next time, or see if this is alive when I come back. Luthien's a good name, but given the rest of the names, it sounds a little odd in my mind. Still, if you all want it, then we'll go with it!
>>43928706Thanks fornthe run RWB
>>43928706Thanks for running. Here's hoping we can keep the thread alive.
>>43928706Thanks for running m8.On a sidenote, when I was going through the archive reading up on the threads I saw that you made a map of the area that out clan is currently in. Did you use a program or something to make it because I thought it looked pretty sweet. I'll try and dig up the pic after I get off of work so that you know what I'm talking about.

>>43931906Noh is a cool name, and it would definitely work. I just personally feel its more boyish. Definitely voting for it if Nila gives us a son.
"Ebba," you reply, "She will be called Ebba.""It is a good name," Nila smiles, as the child looks up at you, blinks and babbles brightly. "She is yours to raise then.""Why can't you?" butts in Beren, a little more confrontational than is perhaps entirely necessary. She would have to be the one to be the child's mother, after all."Ebba cannot breathe underwater," Nila sighs. "Nor can she swim. The child is not like me and she is not a human either, not yet. I can take her back if you insist, but if I do, you will likely not see her again. I've never had a child before, especially with a human - I have no way of knowing what she will become, but I know if I raise her, she will not be the same as if you were to." She fixes you with her steady gaze, eyes as bring as yellow autumn leaves stare into yours. "What will you choose, Trym?">Keep the child. She's family after all.>Refuse her. She's not human and who knows what strangeness that will bring?
>Keep the child. She's family after all.We need a son to keep this line going
>>43933311>>Keep the child. She's family after all.
>>43933311>Keep the child. She's family after all.
Rolled 8, 4 = 12 (2d10)>>43933311>Keep the child. She's family after all.Yeah, no way we are letting our children alone. But we should insist that Nila visits and acknowledges her as her daughter, just in case there is strangeness that has to be explained to her. She is not like Nila, but not quite human either, so some things Nila will have to teach and explain to her, stuff that are not human things, and she may have gotten.
>>43933491Good idea.>>43933311>Keep the child. She's family after all.>Nila visits and explains Nila things to Ebba, when she can. We will get her close to the river every once in a while to make it easier for all involved.
>>43933311Can we take Nila as a wife?
>>43933678I think we already did anon, nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more
>>43933678We'd have to move closer to the river, to be with her.
>>43933311>>Keep the child. She's family after all.>>Insist that Nila visit when she can, for you and your daughter's sake
>>43933311While Nila's here, have her look over our other daughter. Let her know she suffered a great sickness, and see if she has any remedies to help Sera gain back her strength
>>43933913Yup that too
"I will keep her," you say with certainty. "I would never have kin raised far from me."The assembled clan nods approvingly. They understand how important kin is, although a few are looking concerned. You wonder what kind of life Ebba is going to have among people who see her mother as a figure to be feared and respected..."While you're here and speaking of family," you venture, a thought suddenly coming to mind, "I wonder if you could help? Sera is sick, badly sick. I'm worried for her-""And you think I could help?" Nila frowns, tipping her head to one side. "I can try, I suppose, but... I'm not sure what I can do.""You can change your shape, can't you?" Beren asks, suddenly a lot more friendly now there's a chance to clear her worried about her little girl. "Trym mentioned that much... Can't you do other strange things?""Magic, you mean? I can try..." Nila bites her lip and looks concerned. Beren hands her Sera's bundled form; before the sickness she was growing well, but feeding so little over the last weeks has stunted her somewhat. The baby squirms at Nila's cool touch, as the living river places a hand on her forehead and leans close."I... Don't know what I can do," she sighs. "I have no power to make sickness leave her, but..." She looks up suddenly, an idea coming to mind. "Trym! Do you still have the gift I gave you?""The crystals in the stone? I do," you nod."They could help maybe," Nila explains, as she hands Sera back to Beren's caring arms. "I... Don't remember much of what I did that day... Memories get clearer the more like you humans I became. But I remember doing something... Those crystals caught my breath, a small part of me. If... I'm not sure how, but if she is weak, they might be able to help give her more energy. The sickness takes that from her, yes? If you use the crystals that hold my borrowed strength, she could recover."
>>43934564Well then, fashion a necklace out of the geode and give it to Sera
>>43934564"That's perfect!" you exclaim, taking Nila's hands in gratitude. "How? How can we give her strength from the crystals?"Nila's face falls. "I... Don't know," she confesses. "I-it's a strange idea anyway; I don't know if it would even work.""It's better than nothing," Beren offers, hugging Sera against her.Grandfather Akyon, only recently recovered from his own battle with the sickness and leaning on a stout branch for support, clears his throat with a wet spluttering, as he is let through to the fore. "Trym, I'm not so sure," he says, nodding his head respectfully to Nila's tall form. "Even if the crystals can help, Sera is slowly recovering anyway. She is a strong child and we shouldn't take the risk, or waste something that could be valuable. Uh-" he struggles for a moment for how to address Nila. You clan doesn't really have terms of respect for someone who's not related. As your de-facto woman, he could call her 'Grand-daughter' but it's clear he thinks of her as more respectful than himself - an elder of the clan. Finally, he just gives up and tries to sound respectful regardless. "Nila, is there any chance that the crystals could harm Sera if used wrongly?""I... Don't know. I suppose there is a chance though," Nila admits. It seems the choice is down to you. Will you use the crystals to try and heal your daughter? If so, how?>Grind the crystals up and mix them with ash and water to form a paint>Make the crystals into a charm for Sera to wear>Grind the crystals and mix them with water for Sera to drink>Maybe they will burn and Sera can be warmed by the fire?>Perhaps their light will help?>Is there another method?>It's too risky. If you choose wrong, your daughter could be hurt!
>>43934730I mean, the safest option is th charm, given Elia's lady love hasn't seemed to undergo any changes. That said, no changes. I honestly don't know, though perhaps the light is the key?
>>43934730>It's too risky. If you choose wrong, your daughter could be hurt!
>43934730>Grind the crystals up and mix them with ash and water to form a paintBased on what I know from the silver leaf, the light (if the leaf and crystal are similar) gives no heat so burning it is out, and the leaf in question touched our skin before its light faded."Amazing..." You breathe, reaching out for one of the leaves. It sways away from you slightly, but as you touch its surface, it wraps around your finger lightly. It feels like it's covered in fine, short hairs. The light doesn't seem to emit any kind of heat either.
>>43934730>Make the crystals into a charm for Sera to wearEither it helps her or doesn't.She gets a kickass necklace either way.
>>43934730>Grind the crystals up and mix them with ash and water to form a paintPut the leaf in there for good measure
>>43934730>>43935008Second, at the very least skin contact won't harm her

Rolled 4, 8 = 12 (2d10)>>43934730>>43935382That was terrible
>>43934730>Make the crystals into a charm for Sera to wearI think that the charm can help the most out of all of these options, plus it keeps the crystals intact if they don't end up working Sera Riverblessed

Rolled 10, 3 = 13 (2d10)>>43934730

Rolled 2 (1d2)Okay, it's even between paint and charm, so I guess it comes down to a die roll!>1 = Paint>2 = Charm
You decide a charm is probably for the best. Not only does it keep the crystals in relatively one piece, but there's less chance of hurting Sera... Probably? You try asking Nila and Beren for help during the process, but there's little either of them can do. You're beset by doubts for a while as you tinker with the charm... The necklace Elia made Galit doesn't seem to have done anything for her, so maybe you're chasing the wrong idea? Well there's nothing else for it now.You start to chip the crystals out of the geode with a stone. It's hard work, even with the stone shell cracked open and after that, you'll need to string them together somehow.>Roll 3d10 (Skill +Craftsman) to try and assemble the charm>A basic success will not produce any magical result. You need to beat the difficulty by a significant margin

Rolled 6, 3, 10 = 19 (3d10)>>43936601
Rolled 1, 5, 5 = 11 (3d10)>>43936601Come on, for Sera Riverblessed

Rolled 6, 3, 9 = 18 (3d10)>>43936601
The tiny charm comes out a lot better than you expected. If you're going to do this, you figure you may as well do it properly. You use three different strings made from tough, springy aurochs ligaments to bind three sets of three evenly-sized crystals together. The subtle differences in colour are really set off by the crystals soft glow. All the while you're making it, you keep its purpose held in your mind; this charm has to work - you will not let your daughter be taken by sickness. Beren and Nila both seem impressed. The living river turns it over in her hands and nods, smiling. "It feels right! This should work, I know it should!"Beren cradles your new child to her chest, as you slip the charm around Sera's tiny wrist. It's massively over-sized, of course, but you pull it a little tighter and you're reasonably sure it won't fall off, if she wears it on her upper arm.As soon as the charm's in place, you start to hear the wet rattle in Sera's throat fade. She looks up at you and smiles, reaching for you with a child's innocent happiness at seeing her father. The glowing crystals are doing their job perfectly! You successfully crafted a fine charm of healing! Whoever wears this charm has a better chance of recovering from sickness and injury!
>>43937529FUCK YES, now the question is does it only work on her or can we do it to other people too, because the Elder's would probably appreciate the boost
>>43937529Just as you're packing your things away, Nila notices the dried husks of the silver leaves slip out of your bag and drift to the floor. Almost at once, she snatches them up, her eyes wide. She looks between them and you, an expression of shock on her face. "Where did you get these?!" she demands."Huh? Uh, I found them in the hills," you explain and tell her the story of your encounter with the bear. Was it already years ago? It feels like just a few weeks."I see... So the sapling isn't there anymore?""No, the bear stepped on it.""A shame..."You frown and gently take back your fragile treasures. "Nila? What's so interesting about these anyway? What're you not telling me?""I thought that I'd seen them before," she mutters, "Maybe in that other place..? But it's... Oh well." She sighs and shakes her head, smiling. "It's nothing important. I can't stay however. I hope that you and Ebba are happy together. I'll try and visit whenever I can.""You're always welcome," nods Beren, happily letting your new child feed. It seems she's already accepted her as Sera's sister. Nila smiles in return and carefully hugs your woman, before kissing you and leaving.Over the next few days, Sera recovers completely and you carefully store the charm away. Maybe when she's older she can wear it properly. The clan is happy to see her healthy again too and more than a few are interested in getting some of those crystals for themselves, but once they realise they'd have to climb the falls and disturb Nila to get them, interest quickly fades away. Gratitude mixed with fear seems to be enough to keep her privacy for now.
