/tg/ - Traditional Games

Alright, so I got it in my mind to make my first quest some sort of mythology-themed urban fantasy. Let's see how this'll go.

You are a 19 year old male college student named Morgan Vale, in the city of Everclear, California.. Your life is very mundane and average, or at least, it has been. You live by yourself in a small apartment near your college, University of Everclear, where you are a sophomore. Though you don't know why, you have a feeling your life might get more interesting soon. For now, your classes are done for the day, and it's time to get some sleep.

But first, what kind of person are you?
>Nerd. You're more about computers and games then going to parties, though you're acing almost all of your classes, and you're not at any risk of losing your scholarship.
>Average. So average, that you don't stand out, and perhaps contributing to this, you're quiet and rarely make yourself the center of situations.
>Troublemaker. Loud, brash, and you certainly have a mouth. You don't have many friends, but you sure do have a lot of people who don't like you, and sometimes, you like it that way.

You are pretty much an average nerd. You prefer video games and cartoons over being popular, and the last party you were at was during graduation week about two years ago, for your high school video game club.

As you fall asleep, you think back on the day. It was, well, pretty boring. You went to class, took notes, spoke with some friends, ate lunch, came home, and studied. It's usually like that every day.

Soon, you find yourself asleep, slowly approaching that state where you begin dreaming. But as your first dream begins, it feels...odd. You're very lucid. Or maybe the dream's screwing with you?

You can see your surroundings clearly. You're standing in the middle of a white room, pristine and spotless. Standing across from you is a featureless man. No face, nothing to identify anything about him, race, age, nothing. But for some reason, you have a feeling he's grinning. He approaches you, and as he does, you realize that he's more like a shadow than a person. He's not wearing clothing, and his body is entirely smooth. You can't even tell how tall or fat he is, either.

His voice is crystal clear, with but a tone of excitement as he speaks to you. "Ah, another, yes, another has come! Now, you have no idea what's in store! Are you interested in true power, like those of the greats, young man? To be the greatest man any man has ever been? Because you have that choice, the ability to get that power right now! What do you say?"

What DO you say?
>Sure. Ultimate power sounds pretty good.

Ultimate power? That sounds way too good to be true. You're not accepting anything until you know what it is, and more importantly, what the catch is.

As you press him, the man steps closer. You feel that grin of his got even wider. "The power of the ancients, used for the greatest acts in the world! Nothing is too much for you, and nobody is better than you are!" The man however, steps back, and you can hear him sigh.

"But, of course, you'll start small. Just a taste. You'll have to work to get to that level. But, even then, even with this taste, you'll still be stronger than any other man! It's nothing too big, either, just some exercise, socialization, sparring, that kind of stuff. Simple!"

It feels a bit like he's not being entirely open, but you can't really tell. But at the same time, he seems to have some manner of power. And if he can give you some...well, there's a lot you could do with it.

>Alright. Let's do it.

Well, a chance for superpowers doesn't come often, if ever, and you're not going to pass it up. You get ready to respond, but before you do, the man cuts you off. It would seem he already knows your answer, and the feeling of his grin widening is painful.

"Excellent. But, I knew you would accept in the end. They always do. Now, can you feel it? Inside you, around you, comprising this entire room? Tell me! What do you see? What do you feel? What do your senses tell you?"

Suddenly, everything feels off. The room changes, shifting in color and perception, but it's not really your eyes that are sensing this. It feels odd...but you can feel something bubbling up inside you. And you can sense something. Power. And it feels like...

What does it feel like?
>Like your blood is slowing, and something is boiling up in your intestines. The feeling of bile, phlegm, sickness.
>A million voices, screaming, speaking in union. You can feel them, crawling, several times as many legs, too many eyes to count, all around you.
>A passage. And in it, another passage, and another, and another. It never ends, each passage branching out into another for all eternity.

As you imagine it, it fills every sense. You're in a tunnel, and there's a door in your way. You cross through it, only to find another door facing you. And you open every door, never getting through. Until finally, you just want to return to that white room. It was certainly much less irritating. And as you open the next door, the white room is in front of you, the shadowy man reappearing once again.

"Passages! Doors! Now that's a useful power, if you're creative. But, you seem like the creative sort! You're fairly smart, aren't you? Now, though, I've held up too much of your time. Have a good night's sleep...Janus."

You fall back into your slumber, dreaming several dreams including one where you're a space captain, one where you finally get laid, and then one odd one where you go to school in your underpants. Eventually, though, your alarm clock sounds. It's time to get up and run your ass to school.

Today's two classes, morning Math, afternoon Ancient History, both of which you do incredibly well in. As you head to school, things keep feeling...odd. You keep turning your head as you pass through each door, were they creaking? You're not sure, but it's not really important. Maybe you're a bit paranoid after that weird dream...which one was it...

Your thinking is quickly stopped when you bump into another student on the way to Math. As you step back to apologize, you look up, and you instantly recognize him. Carl Malcolm. Big, tall, dark-skinned, probably on a sports team, you're not sure. He's always come off as...not a guy you'd personally want to be around. But this time, he feels different. There's something about him that's just bugging you. And there's the way he's looking at you. It's almost...predatory.

Looking down at you, Carl speaks with a rather angry tone. "What's your fucking problem? Watch your step."

Are you going to act on your feelings, say something to him, or just go to class?
>Go to class. No need to start something.
>Apologize. You definitely don't want him to remember your face, so it's best to calm him down now.
>Talk back. You're not taking this from him. It was an accident, and he needs to realize that.

It's best to keep him calm. He's a big jock, and you're a tiny nerd, so it's incredibly easy to see what'll happen if you piss him off.

As you apologize, Carl mutters something at you, before glaring at you one last time. Then, he bolts through the classroom door, reminding you that the two of you share a class. You're usually too busy paying attention the teacher to notice. But, you also notice as he enters the classroom, that he seems to have his right hand all bandaged up. You wonder briefly what's going on there, before shrugging, following after him a minute later.

Class is uneventful, besides the fact you can't quite pay attention as well as you usually do. Your attention keeps diverting from Carl, who you feel is constantly watching you, to the door, which despite being closed, keeps feeling...off to you. Luckily, you get through class without the teacher noticing this, and exit to relax a bit before History.

As you walk through the halls of the university, you hear a familiar voice calling out your name. "Hey, Morgan!" Turning around, you see that it's your best (and childhood) friend, Rebecca Jackson. She's a mousey brunette and a fellow nerd like you, but that's not to say she isn't attractive! She's very cute, in that 'cute librarian' sort of way.

She begins to chat your ear off about her class, when you start to lose focus. A lot more than during in class. You can hear doors opening, closing, creaking, slamming very clearly, as if they're in your ears. Your eyes keep drifting over to the doors behind Rebecca, wondering when they'll next open, when they'll next close. Eventually, she notices this, and waves a hand in your face.

"Hey, are you alright, Morgan?"
>Yeah, sorry, what were you saying before?
>I'm not feeling too well. I'm not exactly sure what is is, though.

The doors are REALLY loud. Rebecca must be hearing this too, right? You mention it, and she seems a bit befuddled. "No, I'm pretty sure it's just you. You should probably see a doctor about that! You're a bit young to lose your hearing." She laughs, brushing it off, before she starts talking about how amazing space is again, or how she's working on building a bird-feeder, or whatever it was she's talking about.. Or atleast, she tries to, when a small bell dings, alerting the turn of the hour. "Oh, crap. I have another class. I'll see you later, Morgan?"

Rebecca runs off, and soon, after some hours of doing absolutely nothing of importance, History comes. As you get into class, you get ready to take some notes and start paying attention again. But then, once again, the door takes your notice. This time, you can feel something much more different about it..and if you focus, you might be able to find out what that is!

But, your History teacher is perceptive, and if you start focusing on the door instead of class, he'll definitely notice. So what will it be?
>Ignore the door, try and focus on class.

Something about these doors is bothering you, and you'd honestly like to find out what. As you stare at it...things feel kind of odd. For a split second, it's like you can feel every single door on campus. You blink, and suddenly, you notice what seems to be a stream of light travelling from the door. It links to the windows, which link to other windows, which link to doors far outside those windows, and further. Focusing back on the classroom door, you almost feel like you can grab it...open it, from all the way over in your seat.

But before you can even think whether or not you're going to try it, a voice shouts at you for your attention. "Vale! Pay attention! Or is the door really more interesting than the Carthaginians?" The entire class laughs as your teacher admonishes you, and you quickly begin to focus on class again. It seems, though, that despite the hit to your already fragile reputation, the doors are much quieter than before, now that you've had a chance to focus.

History class ends without any other problems, and as you step out into the hall, you realize you should probably figure out what to do for dinner tonight. Maybe after you eat, you can try to figure out what the hell just happened in class.

>Eat at the cafeteria before it closes. It's close, atleast.

Luckily, there is a convenience store between the school and your house, so you stop there to grab a sandwich. As you arrive, it's fairly empty at the moment, to your shock. But, on the other hand, you get the pick of the best sandwich! You dive over to the deli counter, trying to pick whether you want turkey, ham, or pastrami, as a bored cashier plays Angry Birds on her phone.

And then, something feels off on the back of your neck. Slowly, you turn around, to spot someone coming through the door. It's Carl, and to his side is a fairly massive dog. It's big, dark, and snarling, and it's staring right at you, as is Carl. He slowly moves, but not towards the aisles. Towards you. You can feel predatory intent. No, murderous intent.

And, while she looks over at Carl as he enters, the cashier does not seem to notice his dog. There's something a bit odd about it, but right now, you're fairly sure Carl wants to murder you. But you are sure that whatever you feel from Carl, is somehow similar to what you felt when you stared at the door in History class.

Right now, you need to decide what to do. And fast, because Carl's gaining on you.

>Get into a fighting stance instantly. Carl's not going to play nice here.
>Try and reason. There's a perfectly rational explanation to all of this.
>There's doors all around you. Maybe you can do something with them? (list possibilities)

Something clicks inside of you. You can see all these pathways of doors...so perhaps you can link them? You bolt down towards the freezers, as Carl continues to approach, he's not in a hurry or anything, as he approaches.

You concentrate. You focus. And you grab a freezer door. As you begin to focus on the threads between passages, Carl barks out. "Oh, fuck no. You're not getting away from me. That soul's mine."

Despite having a dog that is probably faster at his side, Carl lunges after you, as he begins to pull the wrap off of his right hand. You struggle with the door, and here's hoping you can get this working fast enough, because it seems like Carl's right hand is actually a blade attached to the stump of his wrist. Surprise!

As you open the freezer door, you can't see the inside of the freezer in it. Instead, you see the entrance of your apartment, having successfully been linked to here. And you move to leap through it.

Carl is charging you, but suddenly, he catches himself on an aisle before he goes toppling into your door. Instead, he dashes out the front door of the convenience store silently, much faster than you would have imagined. Almost supernaturally. You quickly close the portal, completely forgetting about the cashier who just saw all of that.

As you take a moment of relief, you hear howling in the distance. Carl's hunting you, and it would seem like he's going to try and track you to your home. You don't have much time to decide exactly what you're going to do next.

And then there's a cat, scratching at your window. It looks kind of odd, from a distance...like it has two faces?

What are you going to do?
>Barricade the door and windows, take cover. Maybe the cashier will call the cops.
>Set up an ambush. If he comes through the door, you should be able to grab him.

A unique cat appearing right now can't be a coincidence. I mean, it actually could, seeing as you just teleported, anything's possible. But, you're not going to bet on that.

Running over to the window, you crack it open to let the cat in, before moving back towards the door. The cat does indeed have two faces, but unlike Janus cats you've seen before, both are fully functioning. Four eyes, two noses, two mouthes, and all of them work. And through the two mouths, the cat speaks.

"Janus! The Godforged of Tyr is coming! You need to set a trap and slay him, quickly, before he arrives!"

The cat SEEMS to be on your side, though you have no idea what a Godforged is. Tyr seems more familiar...Norse, maybe? As you move to the door, you can hear the howling get louder. How should you use the door...and more importantly, are you going to listen to the cat?

There's probably still some people at the university so you need to open the portal somewhere secluded. Looking through the pathways, you decide to set it in the janitors closet, especially since you could probably find something in there to use that is at least somewhat weapon-like.

As you step through the portal, the cat follows with you. Before you can say anything about it, he replies. "It's fine. They won't notice me. I can explain more after we deal with the Godforged! Grab something, and find somewhere to get ready! Fenrir's definitely going to track you down!"

This is all very weird, but you're in way too deep now, and you're aware that your life is on the line. The closest possible weapon is a broom, which is probably the best you're going to find at college. Now...what should you do?

>Grab the broom

You reach for the broom, before closing the portal and leaving through the regular passage out onto the campus. You'll need to find a better weapon soon.

You're not quite sure you'll be able to beat him, though. He had a knife for a hand! You'll need to find somewhere secluded with several doors as backup. It's not cowardice, it's tactics!

The theatre might actually be empty today, as you think on it. There's several doors to backstage, outside the theatre, and into the hallways to the rest of the campus, which should give you plenty of passages to escape.

You have a feeling Carl will be here at any minute. There's still a chance you don't need to kill him. You could call the police, tell them you're being hunted by a crazy black guy. What does the cat think?

"No! We can't let him get away, especially now that he knows of you. Look, I'm sorry for being late, but the first thing you need to know is that it's either you or him. There's no co-existing on this earth for you two, especially since he's already trying to kill you.

Once you get to the theatre, you are relieved to find that it is indeed empty right now. And that's good, because you can hear Carl coming down the hallway.

There might be some stage props if you go backstage, or maybe you could break your broom. Either way, it's your final chance, so you need to decide exactly what you'll do.

>Break the broom, turning it into a effective killing weapon.
>Sift through the props. There might be something sharp in there? Or, alternatively, blunt?

(Also, writing, though if you still want to try and link the door to something else, toss your votes in now.)

Breaking the broom turns it into a makeshift spear, which should be a good enough weapon for self-defense/murder. You take some distance away from and to the side of the door, as Carl bursts right in. This time, his right hand is an axe; it seems he can change its shape. Fenrir growls at the cat, who hisses back from both of its faces, but neither acts. Instead, Carl raises his axe to you, and speaks.

"So. Two ways we can do this. You go painlessly, I take your soul, it's over. Or, you try to fight, and I bash your fucking head in. What's it gonna be, Vale?"

Either you attack now, or you won't get another shot.

Create a door link between the door he's in front of and the door to the school Furnace, drop kick him in.

Ask Carl, that if he's going to kill us, at least let us look out over the earth one more time, and as we do so, stab through the window into Carl's back or whatever will kill/incapacitate him

You're going to play smart here. You turn to the window, telling him you're going to take one last look at the outside world. You approach the window...and quickly lift your spear, building a portal between the window and the door. Carl realizes what you're doing, as he turns briefly towards the door in an attempt to stop it. His mistake.

The broom-spear shatters through the window, sliding out through the door and into Carl's chest, blood spurting out as you impale him. But despite the gruesome attack, he's not dead. Yet. He trips backwards, before falling onto his ass. He's not going to be able to defend himself too well right now, but you have no idea what'll happen if you leave him there. The cat speaks up quickly, already knowing what it thinks you should do.

"Finish him, take his soul! Now is not the time for mercy!"

You could easily drive the broom further into his chest and end his life. What do you do?

>Finish him.
>Spare him.

>>Finish him.
We are genre savvy enough for this.

"Why does this feel like Mortal kombat? Also sorry mate you started it."

Also make sure no witnesses.

Carl tried to kill you. He's not going to stop just because you showed him mercy. And the deformed cat is encouraging you to do this. You approach Carl, and put both hands onto the broom-spear, pushing it deeper into his chest, until it pierces his heart. More blood pours out, and it begins leaking from his mouth, as he begins to go prone. Congratulations, you killed a man! FATALITY

As a reward, SOMETHING odd happens. As the life leaves Carl, a huge gout of energy flows out of him, before slamming directly into you. As it enters your body, you can feel power coursing through you, and the pathway of doors seems to get much clearer. You could probably bridge doors farther, or other powers you're not even aware of yet.

Fenrir howls mournfully, as it stands over Carl's body. It doesn't do much more than that, however, as it soon fades away, leaving no sign of it ever existing.

Now that the battle is over, the cat approaches you, sighing. Its tail swishes as it speaks. "Alright. Threat down, soul gained. Good work, partner." The cat looks over at the body, before sitting down, looking straight up at you.

"I am Othello. I have quite a bit to tell you, Janus. About who we are, what we're doing, and what you just did. I don't know everything, but I can share what I do know, so ask away."

What do you ask him?
>What the hell was that energy?
>Who or what are you? What do you want from me?
>Okay, so, I have superpowers. Why? What are they?
>Why do you keep calling me Janus?
>Don't ask him anything. Right now you need to clean up what evidence you can, and get far away from this murder scene.

You can ask questions while you remove the most damning evidence. Moving over to the body, you slowly kneel down to grab the broom-spear, being careful as to not let it break inside him. Meanwhile, you ask exactly WHAT just happened as you killed Carl. Othello looks over at your cleaning as he responds.

"You took his soul and added its power to your own. It is how you get stronger, boost your abilities. Gruesome, but it's the way of life for you now."

After a bit of work, the spear comes out. It's soaking in blood, but you should be able to dispose of it easily with fire. You still need to know who exactly Othello is, though, if you're apparently going to be working together. He nods, approaching.

"I am your familiar. Every Godforged has one. We are here to guide you, assist you. We cannot fight, but neither can we die as long as you live. What I want from you is to become as great as possible, and that requires you to continue your progression. There might be more things, but I'm not quite sure yet! I only just started existing today."

Well, that clears that up. But what ARE these powers you have? Why? And why does he keep calling you Janus?

"You are a Godforged, a person who has been turned into the vessel for the soul of one of the ancient gods. Your soul belonged to Janus, the God of Beginnings, Transitions, and Passages. And so you will be called, for it is a just and regal name, just like yourself! A great god needs a great name! But, what you have done so far is not the full extent of your abilities. You have only barely touched the surface, and as you get stronger, so too will your powers."

You head to the door. You feel that you have enough control of your abilities that, as there is nothing stressful going on, you could probably make a door back to a familiar place such as your house easily from here. As you get ready to create another portal, another question springs to mind. Do you have to kill Godforged? What if they don't fight you? [Cont]
>>
"There's nothing REQUIRING it, but you cannot get stronger without taking the soul of another Godforged. Your powers will remain stagnant, and you will never reach the pinnacle of greatness if another Godforged remains on the earth. You may be able to maintain a temporary alliance, but stress that it will likely be temporary; eventually, you will argue over who gets what souls, and one of you will have to slay the other."

Othello waits for the portal to open, his tail swishing back and forth. You wonder if there's any more questions you have for him, or if you should just call it a night.

>Call it a night. You can think better after you've had time to decompress.
>Ask him more questions. There's more you need to know, now. (List questions)

(Also, QM note, we're probably wrapping up for the night around here. I'll list the twitter and the likely time for the next session afterwards.)

You have nothing else to ask right now. You bridge the portal back home, and step through with Othello. You'll get some sleep, and hope you don't wake up to the police banging at your door. In the morning, you'll need to figure out exactly what you're going to do for the future.

(Thank you, everyone! That's it for the evening! Advice is always appreciated, and twitter, next scheduled date, and a fun fact about today will be revealed in the next post!)
>>
(Twitter is #briarfloyd - it'll get tweets if the schedule changes, or when the next quest happens.)

(Current plan is for 2PM PST/5PM EST on Saturday the 5th of December, giving me three days to plan the next session.)

(So, since I'm not sure if I'll use them at all, your other two choices for Godforged were Nergal - Disease, and Anansi - Spiders. Anansi got one vote, and Nergal got zero.)

(Good night!)
