It takes off from one of the castle buttresses, circles around once, and then dives straight into the castle interior.
There's a muffled slam, and then silence.

You are Jack Albator. Fierce hunter, renowned hero, soon to be slayer of dragons.
There's a big one, if you've ever seen one (and you haven't). A large, scaly beast seems to have completely claimed Gallete castle as it's own. Normally, you wouldn't care about Catland. You never liked the place, and it's doubtful they would even recognize that you did anything even if you turned the whole castle into solid gold through magic.
But, you're not doing it for them.

Nearby, Louise shudders in Yuuki's arms. Every time the dragon does its pass over the castle, she shivers.
That's her, alright. That's Gallete's hero.

"What the hell is it doing?" Cody slowly stands up.
"We've been watching for almost three hours, and it's still doing that, over and over again." The scout stands up, putting her rod on the ground. "That's why we were expecting a full army, but-"

"Yar, a full army would just be a full target. How'd ye fight something that flies through the sky with an army, anyway? Ye need a strike force. Ye need somethin' that can't be easily seen from the sky."

You holster your looking glass, and then unholster your flask.
You have to keep your priorities straight.

"So, what's the plan?" One of the scouts turns around, toward your group.

"I was thinkin'." Cody takes a hit off his cigarette. "We can close that distance in five minutes, then we'll be in the castle."
"Then what?"
"I haven't thought that far ahead yet, Jack?"

>"How should I know?"
>"Kindly ask it to stop."
>"What is that slamming sound every time it goes in?"
>Let's keep watching for now. Find out what its game is.
>Maybe we're taking the wrong approach, going straight at the castle.
>Screw Catland, we're going home.

"Kindly ask it to stop." You say, with maybe a little bit of sarcasm in your voice.
They look at you, deadpan expression on their faces.

"Seriously?"
"'Ey, it's not like Catland ever tried asking kindly for anythin'. Aye might as well be the first."

Yuuki nervously laughs while Cody smiles. He keeps examining the outside of the wall.

"We could jump over the wall, if we get close enough. We could also try storming the gate."
"Think we can just jump over that wall?"
"I don't know, it's pretty high. It'll be a challenge."

"What if we tried instead jumping in one of the arrow ports?"
"The what?"
"The sides of the wall, the arrow ports. Where the archers shoot from."

"WELP!" The scout stands up and stretches her arms. "Since you don't need us anymore, we're gonna-"
You reach backwards and grab her tail. She emits a light squeak.

"Whar ye think yer goin'?"
"..home." She whispers.

"Naw yer not. We're goin' in thar, and yer gonna be our lookout. If we don't come out in a few hours, yer goin' back to town and getting' help, clear?"

"Listen, this isn't part of the deal. I got paid to-"

She stops, everyone's head snaps back toward the castle.
The beast, once again, flies upward. He does a loop around the castle one time, before coming back down straight into the center.

Another crash is heard.
"L-Like I was saying." The girl crosses her arms. "I'm not paid to-"

"Hold on, whats that crashing noise?"

Everyone stops, thinking back on it.
"It's landing?"
"By nosediving straight into the castle?"

No one has an answer for that.
"So what do you think is going on?"

"Maybe."
You try to think of anything that might cause it to ram itself against the castle over and over again.

"Maybe it's tryin' te send a message?"

"Message to who, Jack? Us? "

"Naw, naw. I mean someone who is still inside or near the castle."

The entire group is silent.
"Jack, please don't say that again. I don't want to fight two dragons." Louise curls her hands around Yuuki's clothing.

"Aye that's-"
You change your mind as well. You already have enough people who want to just turn tail and run away.

"..Does Gallete have somethin' like a gold vault?"
"It does! I've seen it!" Louise chirps.

"Aye bet that's what it's doin'. Tryin' to bust into the gold vault."

"By using its head?"
"Aye. Wouldn't be the strangest thing."

Silence.
"Gear up everyone, we're leavin' the birds behind." You stand up, dusting yourself off.

"Wait, what? Already?" Yuuki seems worried.
"We aren't gonna sit here all day. There's a dragon to slay. Besides, we should get this done before nightfall, Aye don't know how well dragons do in the dark."

There isn't much protest outside of Louise's insistence that you should wait a little longer. You ask her once more out of sincerity if she wants to stay here with the scouting party.

"No." She states once more. "I'm going with you."
"Ye sure?"
"Again! I'm sure!"

"Ye know, if ye start cryin' and slow us down, we're just gonna-"
"No!" She punches your leg. With her strength, the sting gives you pause.
She hoists her axe onto her back. "You dragged me this far, I'm not going back!"

You shrug, at the very least she isn't backing down like you expected.

"Are we ready?" You stand near the treeline, the dragon circles the castle once more.
"On the count of three." Cody readies himself for a sprint. Yuuki hoists Louise, axe and all, into a piggyback ride.

You take a long, hard drink from your flask.

You steady yourself near the castle gates, and try to catch . Louise, Yuuki, and Cody all press themselves against the castle wall.

Cody points toward his eyes, and then toward the castle gates.
You notice that it's slightly ajar. Maybe enough to squeeze through. Louise could make it through easily.

Yuuki nudges your arm, and you turn to her. She's pointing upward, on the castle's walls. One of the windows is open. It's a tough jump, but you could maybe make it.

You scan the area for any kind of entry, which is when you notice a very large crack extending up the wall. It would make a nice handhold to maybe climb all the way up to the buttress. It must have formed when the dragon hit the castle.

Listening quietly, you hear something else strange.
The dragon is furiously pounding on something.

It's not like an angry beast trying to bash open a vault of gold. It sounds more like a child throwing a temper tantrum.

>Up through the crack, we'll hide in one of the guard posts.

You tap everyone on the shoulder and point to the main gate. Slowly, they start creeping along the wall in that direction.

The gate itself seems to have been propped open by a small piece of timber. The crack is going to be a challenge for the adults in your group, but you think you can manage it.

Cody goes first, to make sure there isn't a dragon sitting right there at the entrance. He hops through and draws his revolver, covering your group as you enter.
You help Louise step through the crack, though it's easy enough for her to walk through without having to turn.
You have minor difficulty stepping through, the door creaks and shudders as you push against it roughly in order to fit.

You turn around and help Yuuki step through.
Until, she stops. Her upper body is halfway through the crack when her progress is halted.

"Jack."
"What?"
"I can't move."

You try pulling at her upper half, and then try pushing her through the crack to safety.
She's right, she can't move.

Gently standing up, you peer behind through the crack to determine what may be holding her.
You didn't notice it before, but the door has slightly moved inward since you came through. Maybe your shaking caused it to close slightly? You're not sure.

Either ways, her well-developed bottom half is preventing progress while her gifted top-half is preventing retreat.

"Jack, what do you see?!"
"Shh, calm down." You try to keep her calm.

"Are you two done yet!?" Cody asks, nervously. "We need to get out of sight, now!"

"Yuuki, when I push this door, you come through. Ready?"

You slam against the wooden barrier with all your might. The sound of the door's chains rattling must be loud enough to wake the dead. Yuuki darts through, grabs Louise, and makes a break for the safety of the guardhouse. Cody follows close behind.
You start to follow, except you noticed something.
The banging has stopped.

This isn't good. You're too far back from Yuuki and Cody, and they've just entered the guardhouse.

You don't want to give away their position.

Quickly you unholster your revolver, and then sprint in the opposite direction of the guard post. Quickly, you fire a few shots into the air, straight into some stained glass which lines the inner walls.
They break and shatter into millions of splinters, you slide with great agility under a cart and into a niche in the stone brickwork.

A mighty shadow that passes overhead.
Slowly, you can feel the sand tremble beneath you. A pair of feet upturn carts left in the road and push aside objects littering the street.

With a stomp, one of the carts is reduced to splinters.

You feel a sudden wave of dust lick at your eyes, and the beast takes off into the sky.

Your heart slowly regains its pace. Your breathing starts to steady.

That was too close.
What's worse: You're not even sure you should be trying to leave this spot.

You gently slide your revolver into the street and examine the finish. The reflection off its steel shows little to be afraid of at the moment.
Gently, you pry yourself out from under the fancy patch of brickwork and slowly stand up.

Dusting yourself off, you quietly make your way toward the guardhouse, ducking inside each shop you come across. The streets are deserted enough to where you can effortlessly zigzag to each sanctuary.

You quickly duck into the guardhouse, and breathe a sigh of relief.

Or at least, you would do that. If it weren't for the fact that no one is here.
You just saw your crew duck in here, but now see no one.

Searching around, you notice that a hidden exit has its door loosely hanging open. It seems the dragon coming to investigate may have spooked them.

>Start searching for them.

As fun as it would be to wander around in secret passages, now is not the time.
You need to figure out what that dragon is after.

If it just wants to get the gold and go away, then you rather do that than try to fight it.

Somehow, you don't think it's going to be that easy.

Quickly, you rush out into the streets and toward the source of the noise.
You cross the town square, carts and shops full of rotting food are upturned and destroyed.

Then, you nearly catch yourself from falling.
Falling into a hole that has to be at least fifty feet deep.

A fifty-foot deep hole in the middle of the town square.

Loose rock, torn and thrown stones, smashed carriages, and destroyed masonry are scattered about.
The scene would almost be interesting if it weren't so terrifying.

Carefully, you peer over the edge, into the hole.

The inside has a pretty good slope on it, you could even walk upright all the way to the bottom.
What interests you more is what is at the bottom, it appears to be a set of glowing bars.

Not glowing like gold, glowing like lightning.

You take a few steps back, and search around. This is the dragon's project, that's for sure. You're uncertain what exactly it is after, digging a big hole right under the town square.

A crack startles you, stone and woodwork fall to the streets with a mighty shatter. The nearby buildings all appear to be caving in. Slowly, they seem to droop into some kind of unseen pit that exists beneath them.

Another sound causes you to stand straight at attention.

It's a very weak voice, way off in the distance.
It sounds like-
"Crying!?"

You look in all different directions, toward the collapsing buildings, toward the carriages, toward anywhere an infant might be.
A sinking feeling takes your stomach. You peer over the edge, back into the pit.

The crying is the strongest from the bottom of this pit.

That crying, it's definitely coming from this pit.

You don't want to do it, but you suddenly feel like you have to.
Is the dragon after the only person left in Gallete?

You hate doing this, and you feel as if you're going to regret it almost immediately; but you clench your fists.
Then your teeth.

Then, you step off the edge.
With a spring in your step, you leap roughly in the center of the pit. It's a free-fall all the way down to the metallic bars.

You land on them with a start, they start to vibrantly glow at the touch of your boots.
That crying sound, it's definitely coming from behind these bars.

You find a dented place with enough space to fit through. A glowing beam of light illuminates from the bars like a beacon.
This has to be the gold vault, has to be. Nothing else could emit such a brilliant light.
Someone probably got trapped by the dragon and is hiding inside.

With a final squeeze, you fit yourself through the gap in the bars.

Just in time, too.
SLAM

A deafening blast nearly throws you off the bars and into the room proper. A rush of sand and gravel covers your clothes.

Followed by the heat, the sudden heat licking at your coat.

You turn around to see a face, a very big face, pressed intently into the bars.

"QUIT IT! STOP!" A voice squeals over the sound of stone dust coming to rest. "YOU'RE BLEEDING, QUIT IT!"

Bleeding?
You check your coat, patting down your sides. There is definitely blood on your coat.
It's not your blood.

Once again, that smashing sound. It's even more furious now than ever.

The dragon desperately hammers at the cage, the pounding would drive a normal person mad.

Quickly, you jump back from the bars. You search around this containment to see what could make that thing want to be in here.

Your eyes scan around the room, they quickly try to identify any threats or enemies who may be waiting in the shadows.

It isn't a hard look, the room is brightly lit.
You can easily see that this is no gold vault. In fact, you don't think there's really anything of value in the whole room.
There's a mangy looking bed, the one on your ship was probably a fancier bed than this cot. There's a worn bookshelf with various torn and destroyed parchments lining the shelves. On the edge of the room, is a door which looks to be reinforced with many, many layers of steel.

The light source draws your attention to the center of the room. Though it's shining gold, it appears to be a giant crystal embedded in a stone pedestal. Merely looking at it is enough to cause your head to spin.

Then, the last thing to catch your attention: the source of the voice you just heard.

There's a girl cowering in the corner of the room. She seems uncomfortably close to the bars. On her arms are metallic gloves, they glow the same color as the crystal. She grips onto a stone near the blue, glowing bars.
You would put her age as being slightly older than Yuuki, but younger than Tuile. She definitely stands around Tuile's height.

It seems like she hasn't noticed you.

But that dragon certainly seems to have noticed you.
With a wail, it slams uselessly against the steel bars. More and more blood seems to pour from it.
Kind of impressive considering that this dragon is the second thing you've seen which can bleed.

"Har, back off." You smile, drawing your revolver and pointing at it. "Or ye be goin' to the depths with you." You pull back the hammer.

"NO!"
A sudden weight pushes you over, throwing you to the floor.

"Argh!? Ye crazy, Lass?"
"Don't shoot her!" The girl wrestles against your grip.
"Why!?" You push her off of you with ease.
She maintains her grip on your revolver, a tear runs down her cheek.
"That's my sister!"
