You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

You never thought you could be any more excited for a new mission, but today was a rather special occasion. After all, today was the first day you'd be operating as a full 6 shipgirl task force with San Diego and White Plains. You actually DIDN'T spend almost all of last night watching random youtube videos and resisting the urge to post angrily in the comments because you wanted to be awake and alert for the briefing, much to Portland's surprise.

"You're here awfully early." Portland raise a suspicious eyebrow as you file into the briefing room with your sister ships Johnston and Heerman.

"Is that a problem?" You respond with your own retaliatory eyebrow raise.

"It might be when it's unusual." Portland shakes her head.

It's only a few minutes later that White Plains and San Diego enter the briefing room as well. White Plains gives a happy wave and takes a seat next to you, while San Diego gives a polite smile and sits next to Portland. It's only a few minute after that Captain Takeuchi marches in. You're still not quite used to taking orders from a Jap, but the Captain has been pretty cool so far so you haven't raised an issue about it yet, especially since most of the other shipgirls on the base seemed to actually like him. Still really weird, though.

"Now girls, before we start." Takeuchi coughs lightly. "There is a little matter we must resolve first. Due to our current deployments and situation on the water, there's a particular mission suited for your fast attack capability. But, the Admiral has concerns that your force is too new, and wants a more 'conservative' mission."

"Conservative?" Johnston frowns in confusion.

"He means safer." Heerman whispers.

"Me and the Admiral came to the compromise that we have you girls decide." Takeuchi concludes. "Please make your decision.

"We'll go where we're needed. Whether or not it's safe or dangerous." You say your piece. Johnston and Heerman nod in agreement. You could always count on them to back you up, after all.

"I agree." White Plains says quietly. "We've been cooped up in Pearl Harbor for too long already."

"It would be a nice change of pace from escort duty." San Diego nods.

"Well, you heard them." Portland says coolly. Not like she really had any reason to argue against that. "What do you need us for?"

"All right. I'll begin the briefing then." The Captain turns on the projector, showing a map of the Pacific Ocean just west of Hawaii. "Our primary objective is to retake Midway Island, which we were forced to abandon early in the war. The Abyssals seized the island and turned it into their own base. We originally weren't going to make any offensive moves on the island until next year, but Japan's current supply shortages have forced us to accelerate our plans."

"Why can't we just bomb them?" Heerman asks. "I thought they couldn't hit our planes if they flew high enough."

"While that is true, the fact is that the Abyssals can quickly repair any damage our airstrikes cause, so strategic bombing is not viable. This means any airstrikes will have to happen in conjunction with a major surface strike."

"What about the Bomb?" San Diego asks.

"There's no way the President will authorize dropping a nuclear weapon on American soil, for a number of reasons." The Captain responds as he quickly shoots down that suggestion. "In addition to negative public opinion, it would prevent use from using Midway as a staging point to clear a secure corridor to Japan. Anyways, in order to prepare for the Midway assault, we first need to clear this out."

The projector image changes, zooming into a tiny island (if it could even be called that), situated practically halfway in between Hawaii and Midway, the label on it calling it "Kauo".

"We need to clear out this Abyssal forward position to make it safe for invasion forces to pass through. However, the problem is that all approaches to Kauo are protected by a large Abyssal carrier group. Not only can their planes interdict any assault, but they also provide valuable reconnaissance to Abyssals by keeping track of our movements in the area. This carrier group must be destroyed, which is where you come in."

The image then switches to a fuzzy picture of a very pale girl, wearing black clothing that seemed to resemble bits and pieces of Abyssal gear.

"This the Wo-class carrier, your most likely target. Our intel suggests the group consists of around three or four of these, in addition to escorts. Your mission will be to hunt down these carriers and destroy them."

"What a minute." You frown, nearly shooting up from your seat. "She looks just like us!"

"Cosmetically, yes." The Captain confirms. "Humanoid Abyssals like the Wo class began appearing shortly after the shipgirls did. The Science Team hypothesizes that they were created by the Abyssals as an attempt to copy the shipgirls. Don't be afraid, though, I can personally attest that these things are nothing like you at all."

"Um, sure..." You nod, but can't seem to tear your eyes away from the surreal sight.

"I assume we're not acting alone on this mission?" Portland raises her hand. "I find it hard to believe a single task force can take on a whole carrier group."

"Of course." The Captain nods and blue dots begin appearing on the map. "We'll have the larger task forces move to the edge of their detection range and try to draw their fighters away. Meanwhile, we have subgirls in the area, Darter, Dace, and Flasher, triangulating the position of the carriers. However, their orders are strictly recon only. They're only to assist as a last resort."

"How about our own air support? I only have 24 planes, after all." White Plains points out.

"We've managed to push our safe zone out far enough that we feel our full size carriers can begin leaving Pearl Harbor to resume operations. The Ford has an entire complement of F-35s ready to go once the position of the carrier group is confirmed. If you wish additional support, I can try asking the Admiral to allocate more, but we're already stretching ourselves thin as it is. Either way, like all carriers, the Wo-class Abyssals are not particularly powerful in direct combat, and we believe the escorts mostly consist of destroyers and light cruisers, which should be well within your ability to handle."

You look at Portland, who looks back at you.

"Erm, well, I think I came back about one month ago?" White Plains grins. "Mostly been running escort missions alongside Enterprise and the other carriers. She's really nice, going out on missions and then coming back to train all the other carriers."

"Yeah, she seemed pretty cool when I met her." You nod. "You get any upgrades in the meanwhile?"

"I actually did!" White Plains smiles with pride. "My planes nailed a few Abyssal submarines and I got my engines replaced with more powerful ones. I can do a solid 25 knots now!"

"Tired of being the slowpoke of the fleet?" Johnson teases.

"Now now, Johnston." Heerman tuts. "It's not like CVEs ever needed to go fast."

"Hey, I still remember those times and I HATED always being left behind by you!" White Plains pouts. "At least this way I can actually keep up!"

"T-that's nice!" White Plains squeaks.

"Hey hey, get buddy buddy AFTER the mission." Portland scowls in disapproval. "We're almost at the AO."

On cue, the Osprey's ramp begins to lower as the plane/helicopter whatever the fuck it is drops altitude, hovering right over the ocean surface. The loadmaster quickly makes the motion for you to exit and your little task force all leap out, Rigs materializing as you do so.

"All right, where do we go next?" You grin, cracking your knuckles.

"Hold on, I'm getting on the horn with the subs, see if they narrowed the the location down." Portland says as she puts a hand to her ear.

"Hmmm, what plane complement do you need?" White Plains asks as she takes out an M1 Carbine. On her belt were numerous color coded magazines, no doubt to denote which "planes" they were holding. "I can put up two squadrons of planes."

"Let's go with a mixed force. One squad of fighters and one squad of torpedoes." You suggest.

"That's a good loadout." Portland nods in agreement. "White Plains, launch them."

White Plains nods silently as she brings her scoped carbine into the ready position. She reaches to her belt and grabs a magazine with blue tape wrapped around it. She loads it in with a loud CLACK, aims at the sky, and fires in rapid succession. The bullets fly up into the sky and begin to expand into Hellcats until a dozen of the little things circle in the air in a protective pattern. White Plains then ejects the magazine and loads in another one wrapped in green tape. Devastator torpedo bombers quickly join the Hellcats in the air.

"I'll send them out in a search pattern." White Plains says. "Let me know if you need to change them up so I can recall them"

"Good job, White Plains." Portland nods as she switches off her radio. "Just got word from the subs. They've observed Abyssal fighters heading north, so that carrier group is most likely south of our position. White Plains' aircraft can handle the rest of the scouting. We should probably leave at least one ship to cover White Plains as we advance."

Well, typically, destroyers were the common escort for carriers, but considering you were going after a carrier group, their aircraft were the biggest worry, and San Diego was much better equipped to deal with a threat like that...

"San Diego, you stick with White Plains." Portland instructs the light cruiser. "With your AA, she won't have to dedicate her air wing for combat air patrol."

"Roger that!" San Diego salutes as she falls back behind.

"Hey girls, just a second!" Morgan closes her eyes and brings a hand to her ear, no doubt communicating with her planes. "One my hellcats spotted a carrier, just a few kilometers southeast. Looks like three destroyers and one light cruiser. No aircraft in sight."

"Just one?" You ask.

"One is all it can see." White Plains.

"All alone? Easy pickings!" Johnston grins.

"Hold up." Portland raises her hands. "If we hit that one carrier, the others could scatter. We should wait until we confirm where all of them are first."

"Those Abyssal planes are going to be coming back soon." Heerman points out. "If we wait too long we'll be having a lot more to deal with."

"But this might be at trap to draw us out." San Diego warns.

"Ugh, I hate to admit it, but Sweet Pea here has a point." You sigh. "We need to find the rest of the carriers."

"Well, if it's any consolation, Dace and Darter are tracking a tender. They're hoping it'll lead them to the rest of the carriers." Portland nods and then glares at you. "And don't call me Sweet Pea."

"Sure thing, Sweet Pea." You grin.

You see Portland's eyebrow twitch in the most amusing fashion when San Diego speaks up.

"Um, I'm sorry to interrupt, but my radar is picking up contacts. A LOT of contacts, from the north."

"Oh shit." You grimace when you check your own radar, and confirm a large MASS of aerial contacts. "How many is that?"

"Ninety, at least." Portland scowls.

"H-Hoel! Portland! You have an Abyssal air group headed past your position!" Annapolis speaks up on the radio net. "If you leave them be I can track them back to the carriers for you to attack!"

"The subs are already on that. If we intercept those planes now, we deprive them of their offensive ability, and they've probably already expended their munitions." San Diego gives a slight smile, her turrets twitching in anticipation.

"I say let's knock those planes out!" You laugh as you power up your boilers and shoot forward.

"Yeah! Let's shoot down some Abyssals!" Johnston whoops as she follows close behind.

"Wait- ugh." You hear Portland groan. "San Diego, close to White Plains but provide fire support when you can."

"Aye aye!" San Diego chirps.

You speed forward and can already see a black cloud of Abyssal fighters buzzing in like a swam of locusts. Some were trailing smoke and others looked to be struggling to stay in the air, rising and falling and moving rather erratically.

White Plains' Hellcats draw the first blood, as they dive out of the clouds and into the thick of the Abyssal fighter swarm. Almost immediately, the chittering mass of black fighters scatter in all directions, but not before easily a dozen of them are sent plummeting to the sea below.

That's when you and your sisters start lobbing flak shells into the mass of fighters, the explosions from your rounds tearing even more fighters to shreds.

And then suddenly, the entire sky is turned into fire and smoke as San Diego joins the fray, her multiple 5 inch turrets practically filling the air with a thick curtain of flak .In almost an instant, the number of Abyssal fighters is halved.

"Watch out! I see fresh fighters coming in!" Anna yelps. "Trying to calculate approach vector!"

"We gotta chase those carriers!" You say as you keep your forward momentum, bringing yourself in line with the probably origin point of the fighters.

"Hoel! Wait!" Portland grunts. Her AA guns chatter as she tries to keep pace with you. Sure, she could go just as fast, but the larger and heavier size of her Rig meant she wasn't nearly as nimble as you and your sisters were.

"SD can handle those planes! That's what she was built for!" You cackle. "Keep up, Sweet Pea!"

Unfortunately, you could see quite a number of the incoming planes vectoring straight for you and your little group, while the rest head off to occupy San Diego and White Plains' fighters. At least a two full squadrons of Abyssal fighters, and if your optics weren't faulty, it looked like they were carrying torpedoes.

But oh no, that wasn't even the worst of it.

"I'm picking up m-multiple surface contacts!" Anna yelps. "Six destroyers coming from your north! And that carrier group from the south is turning in your direction! Th-they're trying to pincer you!"

"Sweet Pea, I think now's a good time for that air support." You groan.

"Already ahead of you there." Portland grumbles. "F-35s are inbound. We just need to survive long enough until they get here!"

"Better said than done!" Heerman shouts. "TORPEDOES!"

You watch as the Abyssal torpedo planes drop their payloads, the torpedoes dropping into the water with a large SPLASH before their motors hum to life, propelling them straight at your group.

This kind of put you in a bind. To avoid your AA fire, the Abyssals dropped the torpedoes from their maximum range, which would give you time to respond. You could keep moving forward with your current momentum to get out of the line of fire, but that would separate you further from White Plains and San Diego. You could try pulling a sharp 180 degree turn to regroup, but you're not sure if you can do it in time.

All the while you can see the white wakes of the torpedoes as they speed at you.

You keep moving forward, preserving your momentum as you cut through the water. The torpedoes miss you by a few dozen meters and detonate harmlessly when they hit the collective wake of your little formation. You take the chance to look behind you, and San Diego as busy keeping pretty much all the Abyssal aircraft at bay as her 5 inches keep firing and laying down a curtain of flak. However, you can see even from her the barrels of her guns glowing red from the heat. Meanwhile, White Plains' fighters are doing their best to whittle away at the swarm of Abyssals, and White Plains herself has her carbine out, alternating between launching fresh planes to replace losses and using her carbine as an actual weapon, popping individual Abyssals out of the air like ducks. Her Avengers head for the southern carrier group, no doubt to do as much damage as they could.

In your immediate vicinity, though, the six Abyssal destroyers from the north speed in, their glowing eyes and skull like grins glinting in the sunlight. As they prepare to fire, Portland rushes and skids to a stop in front of you, absorbing the brunt of the Abyssal volley.

"Hurry the hell up and kill these sons of bitches!" Portland yells 5 inch shells impact and bounce off her armor.

"No need to tell us twice!" Johnston whoops as she blitzes around the side, her engines taking her on a course to flank the enemy destroyers. You and Heerman follow her lead, your rig-mounted torpedo launchers swiveling into attack position as you aim your cannons.

You and your sisters all fire off a volley of torpedoes simultaneously. You watch the projectiles shoot off towards the Abyssal formation. The Abyssals are too distracted attacking Portland to notice the attack, and you see yours and Johnston's spreads hit dead center, completely annihilating four of the destroyers. The remaining two turn to respond, but you already have one bracketed with your cannons, and your shells punch through its black carapace, sending oilblood gushing from its wounds.

Portland, with the pressure now taken off of her, finishes off the last destroyer with her own heavy cannons, ending the immediate threat.

Suddenly, missiles streak over your head and plunge down on the southern carrier group. The Abyssal escorts melt away under the assault, leaving just the light cruiser and Wo-class carrier remaining.

Up above, you see grey fighters, of which you've only seen on random pictures online. F-35s swoop in, belching missiles from their wings and internal bays which streak in all directions, downing Abyssal fighters in droves. You manage to catch a brief flash of an emblem on the tail of one of the F-35s, a sort of playing card. The F-35 flies low and tips its wing at you before climbing back into the sky.

"I-It looks like the skies are clear! You only have that one Wo-class to the south to worry about!" Anna chirps.

"This is Flasher. I've found the remaining three carriers, all retreating back to Kauo." You hear a cool, calm voice report over the radio. "They're still under escort, but I think most of their planes are spent. Permission to engage?"

"N-Negative, Flasher! Your orders are to continue to tail them!" Anna responds.

"You know, I think we can catch them, if we go full speed." Heerman notes.

"But we can gang up on that one to the south!" Johnston whines. "It'll be a good old fashioned curbstomp!"

The four of you make good speed, and your boilers remain strong as pursue the fleeing Abyssal carrier group. Very quickly, your radar begins to ping returns as you catch sight of the rearguard element skylined just over the horizon. It was easily twelve destroyers and three light cruisers, all bearing down on you in an effort to protect their charges.

"This is Wild Card lead, we're good for one more pass before we're bingo fuel." You hear one of the F-35 pilots announce. "You need to designate a target or we're going to have to turn back right now."

"Um, I'm getting some new orders in." Anna speaks up again. "Er, the Science Team wants as many of the carriers as intact as possible. Preferably alive, for research purposes."

"What the one we left behind wasn't enough?" You groan.

"STRIKE-1 is handling it, but Vahlen's been very VERY insistent she wants as many intact specimens as possible." Anna sighs

"Fuck that! Let's just blow em all up!" Johnston sneers.

"That's important potential research material." Portland points out. "Vahlen and her team have done a lot for us."

"Take out those escorts! We'll handle the carriers!" You bark.

"Roger that! Beginning our attack run!" Wild Card Lead announces. Above, you watch as the F-35s release more missiles as they streak off towards the Abyssal line. Amazingly, you can see the missiles curving and maneuvering through the air like planes, each one tracking and chasing down an individual Abyssal and eliminating it with deadly precision.

Fuck, you wonder if you could ever get something as neat as that.

However, the path was open to the last three carriers, who were skating back to base at fulle speed. You see them turn their heads, glaring at you bright blue eyes as cold as any winter night. It unnerved you slightly.

"I'll take lead!" Portland says as she pulls ahead. "Their guns may be weak, but they can still penetrate you if you're not careful!"

"Go ahead, Sweet Pea." You say, making a mock bow to her.

Portland manages to give you the best "I don't have time for this shit." expression before continuing on, and it's here where you see Portland show her stuff. Her turrets swivel to engage all three Wos at once, pounding them with her cannon shells. The Wos give inhuman shrieks as their thin armor cracks and buckles under the assault. two of them continue to try and run while the third stays behind. It tries to deploy what fighters it has left out of that giant hat thing it has, but a well time shell hits the planes right as they launch, exploding brilliant and shattering the Wo's hat like glass. The Wo doesn't even have time to scream, considering the rest of its head was nothing but a charred skull.

"Whoops, I guess I overdid it." Portland's face pales. "The Admiral is going to be soooo angry with me."

"Well, thanks for softening them up for us." You laugh as you pat your "commander" on the shoulder and jet forward. "Come on, girls! It's open season!"

"Hoo boy, it's open season!" Johnston's blood is clearly up now.

>Take em out! You only need them RELATIVELY intact!

"Hey Wooooooooooooooo~!" You coo as you unsling your bat and start rapping it against your rig, creating a repeated CLANG as you advance on one of the Wos you've singled out. "It's time to plaaaaaaaaaaaaay~."

The Wo turns to face you, and you can swear for one brief moment an expression of fear flashes across its face when it sees you, as if it recognized you or something...

Nah, had to be your imagination. You shake it off and wind up for your swing as you close in...

As a last ditch effort, the Wo attempts to retaliate with the weird tentacle pincer things protruding from its hat. However, its movements are slow and sluggish thanks to the damage Portland had inflicted on it, and you bob and weave through the strikes. It then pulls out this sick looking cane and tries to attack you with it, but you easily parry it to the side and swing low, striking the Wo in the knee and popping it out of its socket. The Wo gives an inhuman screech as it falls onto the water, temporarily disabling your hearing. However, that does stop you from swinging again, connecting directly with the Wo's temple and the Abyssal goes silent. Alive but unconscious.

Well, hopefully alive. You're actually not really good at this whole "telling the difference between being asleep and being dead" thing yet.

And there's a massive explosion, and your spattered with a rain of oilblood and debris.

"Damnit, Johnston." Heerman sighs.

"Whoops, I guess I got carried away there." Johnston laughs nervously.

"You shoved your cannon down its throat and pulled the trigger. How is that getting 'carried away?'" Heerman shakes her head.

"Well at least Hoel did her job properly." Portland grunts as she sails in. "Extraction is on the way right now.

"Awwwww, thanks a lot, Sweet Pea!" You say sweetly at the compliment.

"Stop calling me that." Portland fumes. "And you've still got a lot to learn."

"Well I haven't had that much fun in a while!" San Diego stretches as she drfits in, her 5 inch cannons still smoking and warped from the heat of continuous firing. "We should do it again!"

"Oh, my poor Hellcats..." White Plains sighs as she slings her carbine. "Shen's not going to be happy."

You then hear the sounds of Osprey rotors as your extraction arrives, as well as several more Ospreys. Surprisingly enough, though, you see Vahlen of all people leaning out of one of them. The look of wonder on Vahlen's face suggested this was practically Christmas for her as recovery teams began collecting what was left of the Wos.

"Ah! A live Wo specimen! How wonderful!" Vahlen squeals. "I appreciate the effort, girls. You shipgirls are just far more reliable for this sort of work than STRIKE-1!"

"HEY!" You then see one of the STRIKE-1 members, a redheaded girl, step out from behind Vahlen. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"Well, Red, they at least did not shoot their targets with rocket launchers." Vahlen narrows her eyes at the soldier.

"Hey, that Wo was resisting arrest and I was in fear of my life." Red huffs, crossing her arms in indignation. "I fired in self defense."

"You fired six rockets into it! There was practically no corpse left!" Vahlen snaps angrily.

"Just makin' sure the job was done." Red shrugs.

"Ladies, please." Section sighs as he steps between the two.

"Section, I would like to remind you to have your soldiers show more restraint when it comes with encountering new strains of Abyssals!" Vahlen tuts.

"Fuuuuuuuck that." Red sticks her tongue out. "You weren't there on day one! You have no fucking clue what these things can do!"

"Ummm... did we just get caught up in the middle of something here?" Heerman frowns.

"I don't know, but I think I'm liking that Red girl!" Johnston giggles.

"Come on, we don't have time for this. Get in the Osprey." Portland sighs as she shoves all of you towards the extraction bird.

To be fair, you were kind of enjoying seeing the normally self centered and a bit haughty Vahlen get put off her game for once. But, you just realized that you were tired as hell, and it was time to go home.

After all, Mulberry promised ice cream, that mystical treat that was considered more valuable than gold and always jealously hoarded by carrier crews, if today's mission was a success.

You wonder what it tasted like...
