It's been two weeks, two weeks since you took up the mantle of captain in the village's guards. Five minutes ago, your scout reported a behemoth sighting a mile from your village. Course: directly towards you. This will be the first defense you'll have to mount. You didn't expect it to be this soon, but nothing can be done can it?

You've already begun setting out with your men. Six in total including you sitting in your beat up truck. Jonas sits next to you in the driver's seat. His hands are shaking, but he tries not to show it. Of course he would be nervous, it's still his first time as squad leader. Along with him are:

Pick 4, multiple picks are fine. (e.g. 2R, 1M, 1HG)
> Rifleman [R] (Rifle, Standard Rounds, Grenade)
> Marksman [M] (DMR, AP Rounds)
> Heavy Gunner [HG] (LMG, Standard Rounds)

(Jonas himself is a rifleman. As you are the captain, you won't be taking part in the attack but coordinating it from the truck)

5 men in total to mount a defence. You'd wish for more, but there's not enough bodies in the city to send here they always say. In addition to your measly crew, three of your men act as scouts, hunkering down in nests around your village. A total of 8 fighting men under your wing... you pray at least some villagefolk answer your recruitment drive.

The truck rumbles to a stop, just shy of a snow bank. Laying around you lies fresh fallen snow from the night before. Flat ground perfect for your HGs. Ahead, roughly fifty paces to the front marks the beggining of the heavily wooded forest that seems to surround your village save for the roads that lead in and out of it. While your HGs wouldn't be able to make as much use of open space in there, the beast you hunt couldn't either. A third option exists, albeit a near suicidal one. Have both your HGs set up in the back of your truck, your Riflemen and marksman will scout for the beast and lead you to it.

You signal Jonas to continue, and eventually, the truck stops once the density of the forest has risen considerably. Evergreen treese reach out to the skies like fingers of a drowning man. Leaves and branches overlap considerably in certain spots, almost blotting out the scarce sunlight that does manages to touch the ground. Your men disembark along with Jonas, who you keep in contact with using the radio installed in the truck. Fanning out, your HGs set up their LMGs, deploying their bipods while your marksman adopts a nearby mound as his nest.

If your calculations are right, the beast should be 10 minutes by foot from here. You'll have to lure it to your ambush lest it strays from its path and bypass you.

Roll 1d100 for luring using your riflemen.

Barely ten minutes pass before a large bellow is heard throughout the forest, stunning even you for a moment. Immediately, the atmosphere tenses up and each minute trudges along unwillingly. Eventually, the unofficial radio silence is broken.

"-ready! Get ready! We're about to enter visual range."

"How far is it behind you?"

"Two hundred meters of so."

"Split up and get out of the zone, we'll begin firing once he's in range."

The brief silence that follows strains against your ears like a pane of glass holding an all-too heavy object, finally broken again by the deafening roar of your HGs beginning to fire.

Your mark approaches, white shaggy fur already pock-marked by crimson flowers that blossom across its flesh. It races along on its four limbs, each tearing up the dirt behind it. A train in motion that cannot stop whos panting breath only reminds you of how close it shouldn't be. Your marksman's voice is only barely heard above the cacaphony of gunfire, asking for where he should focus his fire on.

The rattle of the gunfire continues without end, with only brief pauses for reloads. The mounded snow that surrounds the barrels are a godsend, preventing the LMG barrels from overheating as fast as it normally would. The crack of your marksman's rifle sounds, and his aim is true. The AP bullet finds its mark with ease, although the exterior of its impact looks no different.

The beast is now more red than it's original white, stained again and again by the rivers of blood that soaks its fur. Only now does it stop, its footfalls more like a lumbering tide than the swift wave it was before. Winds knocked out of its sail, it goes against all reason and continues onwards when all others would have run. Now barely a few dozen paces from your emplacements, it rises again as if expanding all energy on vengeance.

At this range, even a rookie would have a high chance of hitting his target. Under an undeniable hail of fire, your prey slows yet again, then completely stops as a final crack from your marksman silences it. It's only now that the biting cold invited by your sweat soaked overcoat draws your attention. Your heartbeat's out of control, but at least there were no casualties.

"Pack it up, good kill. Let's get out of here before more of them arrive."

Monsters like these usually cannibalize their brethren soon after one falls. The villagefolk usually drag the corpses of the fallen beasts back for materials but sometimes other scavengers beat them to it. Too bad you don't have more men, the villagers need protection and so its not uncommon for you to do two excursions in a day.

"So you're willing to stay out for us huh? Good, good. Thanks cappy. We're on our way."

The meat of these beasts are edible, but is incredibly tough to eat and therefore must be boiled for quite a while to soften it up before being eaten. The leather made from their skin is quite strong, but there isn't much left usually after they are killed. Due to the village being on the frontier, most of the meat is exported back to the city.

The villagers split the profits 50/50, which is where most of your income comes from. Requisition orders can be sent to headquarters in the city but materials and equipment are more easily bought than requisitioned.

---

You leave the truck, holding your coat closer to you as the winter wind assaults your face. You head towards Jonas, who's closest to you, before asking him to accompany you to pick up the bullet casings.

"So Jonas, that was quite a first hunt huh?"

Fortunately for both of you, the bullet casings are in clumps where the HGs had deployed.

"Ah... yeah. We're lucky that it didn't kill anyone but I guess we could have been more careful. You know digging trenches and stuff, not that it was needed I guess..."

>>
"Well, trenches are a good idea, but they'll take time and sometimes we won't have that privilege. Besides, too many trenches and the villagers won't let us hear the end of it."

Jonas scoops another handful of casings into an open burlap sack, careful to keep out as much snow as possible.

"Mm, yeah I suppose. What about portable barricades though? I remember my da telling me about how archers in medieval times would plant stakes to deter a cavalry charge."

"You know anyone experienced with these plants? Might have a herb or leaf that deters them."

"I think Sebastian's uncle used to be a botanist... you should check up with him."

cont.
>>
A moment of silence passes as you both combine your collections of casings together in a large bag.

"Any reason why you joined up in the guard Jonas?"

"Someone has to do it I guess, can't have too little guards or one stroke of bad luck will wreck us."

Before long, a convoy of trucks similar to yours arrive on scene, with men disembarking with numerous saws and cutting implements. You meet with the village elder, who upon greeting thanks you again before leaving to supervise his team. Hours pass and fortunately nothing of note happens.

An arrangement is made for the skull to be cleaned and transferred to your outpost in the village. It is only at nightfall when the clean-up crew has finished scavenging most of the meat and fur from the recently slain beast. They pack up and begin to drive back to the village, the haul reeking from the back of their trucks.

Having escorted the men back to the village, you turn to your outpost, a low lying complex of two cabins. One functions as the dormitories while the other serves as everything else, briefing center, armory, shooting range, kitchen, etc. While the rest washes up in the much too small washroom and prepare for bed, you:

Sitting at the desk, you search through the pile of papers on your desk, managing to find a two neatly stapled bunches of paper.

Johann Smith
Stamina: Poor
Marksmanship: Above Average
Notes:
- Wants to be a marksman (Jonas: marksmanship isn't that good... but we can try to improve his aim if you want.)
- Trigger-happy (Jonas: spammed bullets at the range instead of taking measured shots. Think what you will about him)
- Knows some first aid

Stamina: Average
Marksmanship: Good
Notes:

- recently moved into the village

Ammo is something you'll have to be aware of in this setting, noted by the summary of expended materials. Currently, you have:

20 Fuel

Resources can be requisitioned or bought. Buying resources is way easier and faster but takes up money. Each person has a salary of $50/month.

Leaving your office, you straighten out your coat before crossing the cobblestone road to the dorms. The dorms is a simple wooden construct made more for practicality than aesthetics. Thick wooden paneling line the outer walls, separated only by the timber supports and barred windows. Inside the dorms tell a similar story, with a spartan complement of a bed and locker for each man.

Gathering your men around the shared table, you get them to talk about the hunt and how they feel about it. Eventually, the night draws on and having gotten a feel for each of them, you leave them to whatever free time they have left.

cont.
>>
Jonas is comfortable with how the team operates, but wishes that more care is taken lest casualties are taken. He understands that additional measures will take time and effort but is willing to do anything to safeguard the team's future.

Charles feels that the first hunt went exceedingly well, but is a little annoyed that we had to stay out for the cleaning crew. He feels that they would have been fine even if we weren't there.

Both Sebastian and Davis are confident after today's hunt, but feel that they can improve

Locke has no particular feelings about today's hunt, and is simply glad that everything went well.

You have a quick shower before retiring for the night, which passes all too soon before the first rays of sunlight fall upon your face in the morning. You decide to:

> go through your stocks and fill up requisition forms if need be
> meet up with your one-man R&D department
> see if you can get any additional jobs

---

You also begin to plan out a training regimen for the men, focusing on:
> Marksmanship
> Stamina
> Write-in

There are 3 'slots' in a day for activities. It is customary to give your men a day off after a battle followed by two days of grace from the battle roster, do you give them a break?

A few minutes of deliberating on training brings you no where. Setting it aside for now, you head down a flight of stairs to your R&D department, if one man can be considered as such. The workshop is messy, but in a sort of way it's an organized kind of mess. On the sole clean spot on a nearby desk lies a note and a stack of paper, your mechanic informing you that he's out for materials and to choose from the three preliminary projects he's been working on.

> Rudimentary Napalm
Jeff: Animal's are afraid of fire right? So why don't we use their nature against them? Should be done in a week or so, depending on luck. You can expect flamethrowers up the wazoo

> Mounted Weaponry
Jeff: See, a man can only carry so much, so why not mount an MG or grenade launcher on the truck? The frame can be retrofit in about 3 days if I work on it.

> Mobile Barricades
Jeff: I heard from Jonas that barricades could be useful, so I was thinking of a coil of steel wire that can be wound around trees. Allows you to shoot through, keeps you from being eaten. Hopefully. Two weeks.

The following three days pass without anything of note occurring. Training has gone as expected and Wilson seems to be learning well under Davis. Davis's training has been slower than the rest of the team, which is expected as his time is taken up by Wilson.

The LMG arrives from HQ and is in decent shape. Jeff has finished retrofitting the truck to have a hard point for a weapon.

> Rudimentary Napalm
Jeff: Animal's are afraid of fire right? So why don't we use their nature against them? Should be done in a week or so, depending on luck. You can expect flamethrowers up the wazoo

> Mobile Barricades
Jeff: I heard from Jonas that barricades could be useful, so I was thinking of a coil of steel wire that can be wound around trees. Allows you to shoot through, keeps you from being eaten. Hopefully. Two weeks.

Trenches would stop some of the more swarmy mobs from reaching you. There's actually more mob types than just the huge ones.

Another day, another problem. It's midday and your scouts have reported another sighting. This time, it seems that there is a pack of beasts coming rather than a behemoth. You suppose that they'd be easier to kill since they won't have as much meat between your bullets and their organs but the fact that there's a few of them means that they could attack from multiple angles.

20, Low Failure (Barely)

As you embark on your journey to the killing zone, you cant help but feel a chill run down your neck... must be the winter cold. Along with Jonas, who's again the driver there, are the rest of your men. The plan is simple, form a separated V at the enemy. You'll drop off Jonas and the rest before going to lure the beasts out.

The journey to the forest hardly takes your mind off the mission, but time passes anyway and you're left to your thoughts. Soon, flat ground is found and your men disembark from the truck, leaving only you. Driving off, you catch Jonas waving in the distance.

REMEMBER YOUR CQC TRAINING, BOSS!
>>
You venture further into the forest in search of your marks and soon, the canopy engulfs your vehicle in full, much like a bird of prey circling above its prey. You manage to spot the first of your marks. They're smaller than your first kill, definitely, but are still too big for comfort. It stands at about a man in height, with its body strung out to a length of three men. Each wisp-like hair fall from its back in clumps, tendrils in the wind. It stalks surreptitiously on its hind legs, until you sound the horn and quickly execute a U-turn.

Your legs can't jam on the accelerator hard enough, evidently as you see what you fear most: two, no, three beasts gaining on you slowly but surely. Beads of perspiration rush down your neck like tendrils of the river Styx. In a matter of moments, three things happen simultaneously

cont.
>>
You blink, time pauses, and the lead beast pounces. Seconds pass and no matter how you will it, the claws of your prey turned predator strikes the back of your vehicle. Metal shrieks against claw, muscle strains against the engine of your steed, but lady luck is on your side, its paws seemingly phase through your truck after some resistance, no doubt having gouged it.

Salvation lies ahead, as you break through the edge of the forest into your planned ambush.

(Sorry for delay, cooking)

The LMG roars to life in your hands, sputtering out hot lead in a trail of fire towards the charging beast. Almost immediately, it begins to falter and slow. Now close to death, the final kill shot is given by one of your marksmen, who's shot aims true based on the dying beast's wails.

You almost give release a sigh of relief, until another trio of beasts lunge from the treeline at your right wing while you were distracted. The leading beast is already bleeding, no doubt a sign that it was the one that fled earlier. The three charge, only to be met by a storm of bullets that shred through them with ease.

Troop morale is a mix of relief and joy after finishing the beasts off quickly. Your men are also more cautious after what they saw.

The cleaning crew will finish at about sunset and reach the village, with your escort, around nightfall. The truck is badly damaged at the back, but luckily no damage has been done to the axle. While it might ride weirdly, it can still move.

Both your HGs board the truck, securing their LMGs to each side of the truck to form a pseudo-turret. Jonas operates the truck mounted LMG in lieu of the non-existent HG. With all of your HGs ready, you begin driving forward into the forest in search of your prey.

From the scout's description, it seems that what you hunt isn't so different from your first, based on the size reported. With any luck, you should find it soon.

Wilson has finished training

4 days to requisition

The next morning, you decide to contact HQ to see if they have any trackers available. You do know that tracking units exist, but you're not sure about how common they are. The call's a bust, too busy with operations, HQ says.

You check with the village elder next, who mentions that there is a tracker in the nearby village and promises to contact him for you. The tracker wants $150/month for his services and an additional $100 for training. Then again, training would certainly depend on the skill of your men.

A quick check with the village elder mentions that he primarily uses a dog. He has a short track record of locating animals, but hasn't tried beasts.

If you plan on hiring him to train one of your men, you'll also have to get a dog.

A local farmer is willing to sell a dog at $50, which I'll take as a yes.

Before buying the dog, let the guy who knows about dogs have a look at the potential candidate, if he gives the ok, buy it, if he doesn't find the dog adequate look for another

and that can wait until the tracker is trained, incase it takes more than a month.

Besides, it's important for the tracker to give a good first impression to more easily create a solid bond, and that's way easier if the tracker already knows what he's doing before handling the dog. There's a big difference in established hierarchy between a trainer acting as "pack leader" and the tracker acting as "pack leader" with advise from the trainer.

I would accept if it was just a simplification due to gameplay/story segregation, though.
