You wake in the morning, face and hand sore despite the healing brought on by the raw flesh consumed after last night's combat. Emma lies curled at your side, snoring loudly. Djanna has already left the hut, presumably to rejoin Baltas and her mother on the deck of Malir's ship. You rise slowly so as not to wake the slumbering kitsune, wincing as you put pressure on your hand. The wounds had mostly sealed, but perhaps it was something more making it ache. Perhaps guilt? You flatten your ears, banishing such thoughts from your mind as you make your way out of the hut into the dim morning light, village men already making their way to the boats for the work ahead of them. The elder is seated outside, facing the ocean with a thoughtful look on his face, staff leaning against his shoulder. Moored to the long dock, Malir's ship rocks in the gentle waves, he and Baltas making repairs to the damage brought on by the gem-like tortoise monster.

Vela is nowhere to be seen, nor is Cain. At this point, you're not certain you want to talk to either of them, but their absence is somewhat conspicuous. You pick up on a few of the village men talking about the trial of honor as they walk to their boats, some casting sidelong glances at you, some even nodding respectfully. Huh... that's new. You feel your tail wag just a bit, almost involuntarily. Almost.

You sit down beside the elder quietly, the old man nodding to you without speaking. You stifle a yawn, running your nails lightly against your cheek, trying to shake the sleep from your brain to little benefit.

"You slept like the dead. The trial must have tested more than your body. Tell me, girl, did you dream?"

You blink, considering his question for a moment before you shake your head. "Huh-uh... was I supposed to?"

The elder shrugs. "Who can say? I had simply wondered if the winds and stars had seen fit to grant you a vision. They are known to do that, time to time, tricksters that they are, and deeply as you slept..." He lets the comment hang.

"Ah... well... no. No dreams. No visions. Just sleep." You yawn, as if to emphasize the point. "The village seems quiet this morning. Where are Cain and Vela?"

"Those two. Vela returned late last night, and Cain is out with the men. He rose early this morning and set out. Said he had his fill of being a grass-gatherer, and he was going to become a fisher, to better provide for Vela."

You nod for a moment, before you realize just what it is he said.

"Provide for... wh-what?" You tilt your head, ears flicking as you look at the Elder. The old man simply nods.

"He has seen your courage and I think, in his own heart, he does not think he measures himself worthy. He has decided that he will take on Kiva's burdens, as a man of our village, and that includes Vela's care." He chuckles. "Not that she has need of it."

Well... that's one problem solved, you suppose... but still, to just... ARGH! You jump to your feet, tail rigid, fists cl- ow... ow... okay, no fist. No fist. Ow...

"Do not worry so, pup." The elder lays a hand on your arm gently. "Cain's infatuation was real, but I think in the end, your path will take you from us, and his will bind him here. It is better this way."

You nod, unsure of what to think as you excuse yourself, heading for the ship.
>>
>>44063603
As you approach, a long, low whistle sounds from the deck.

"What radiance this way wends? My, it is as if the sun rises in the wrong direction and makes to-"

"SHITDAMN, sly-tongue devil, do not honey my niece's ears!" Baltas cuffs the satyr on the back of the head, knocking the young man several steps forward. He winces and holds his head, grumbling. "Pup-child, up! Come aboard! I had wondered if you slept to your doom!"

You shake your head as you trot up the gangplank, hugging your uncle and receiving a pat on the head in turn. "No, just slept a little late... have you seen Djanna?"

"Ah, small-scales is below deck with she-devil. You are needing them? I will call." He inhales to shout, but you shake your head.

"No, I just want to talk to them about a few things! I'll go get them. Thanks, uncle!" You give him a smile and scurry below, into the semidark, and find the captain's quarters. Sylea and Djanna are standing over a map, the elder dragon showing the smaller how to plot a route. She looks quite impressed with her hatchling's abilities.

"Mm, yes, very astute. We'll lose some time, but it would be best to avoid the shoals there. My, and here I was worried about you when you left home..."

"So... we have a plan?" you ask casually, walking in to look down at the map. Yes... yes, Nadia... that is, without a doubt a map. You nod, secure in your map identification skills.

"Ah, yes." Djanna says, businesslike. "We'll depart when the tide goes out tomorrow morning, after we take on supplies, and sail to the east along this route." She traces a thin line between several small islands with a claw, before drawing it to the south, out into open blue squiggles. "Then, we'll head for deeper water. Malir has assured mother that his ship will make better speed in the open ocean."

"Probably some charms left over from his pirating days." Sylea leans against one of the posts supporting the ceiling overhead, her tailtip flicking idly. "For a randy old goat, he's clever."

"Regardless, we should reach the Orphans in a week or so of sail once we leave the archipelago." Djanna finishes.

"The what, now?" You ask. "Arching... pelican?"

"Bunch of little islands." Sylea says with a grin.

Ah.

The door behind you creaks open, and Emma runs in, looking worried, but once she lays her eyes on you, her worry fades, once more becoming the reserved mask of calm. "Ah... you... I was worried when I woke up and you weren't there..." she mutters, looking to her side, tails flicking softly. The mood between the two of you is still strange, but at least she's not terrified of you any more. Perhaps the journey will give you a chance to fully put the... incident... behind you...

You spend the remainder of the day recovering your armor from Vela's father, and bidding your farewells around the village. A feast is held in honor of your departure, as the warrior who calmed the sea. Even the sahuagin give you gifts: mother-of-pearl inlaid trinkets, beautiful shells, and one of their elder's scales, a mark of friendship. You sleep on board the ship that night, Djanna and Emma lying still in their own bunks. Sleep eludes you for some time, but shortly after midnight, a small form slips into your bunk alongside you, stealthy as a shadow, and when next you know it, Malir is calling the command to cast off from above. You go above deck to wave you farewells to the villagers.

==========================================

A week at sea later, the gangplank descends, landing heavily on the stone pier of Effreh, a terraced city built into a cliffside long ago carved out by Malir's people. Bright awnings and banners fluter from the stucco facades of the houses, the designs and make becoming more fanciful the higher they go, a large brilliantly-white house dominating the top of the cliff and overlooking the city below. The lower sections are simple stone, with heavy doors meant to be barred in case of invasion or inclement weather, and are mostly dedicated to storehouses and mercantile establishments. Malir descends first, the harbormaster walking over with a sneer on his face as you and Djanna descend the gangplank, Emma still battling nausea on the railing, Sylea and Baltas seeing to the mooring.

"Finally! Came back to pay your fines have you, water flea?" The shaggy, black-furred figure spits into the tide, patting the cutlass at his hip. "Or will the Grand Marshall be gettin' a new head for his drum?"
>>
>>44064535
Malir raises his hands with a grin. "No, no! Malir Sea-Strider pays all debts! I have in my hold the most wondrous of shells! A beautiful thing of emerald and gem! More than enough to pay my fines and then some left over!"

"Hey!" You snap, growling in furry fury. "That shell belongs to me! I fought it! Djanna helped... but I did most of it!"

"Ah, and what of the damage to my boat, my lovely snowflake?" Malir smiles, looking over his shoulder, though his brow sweats a little, eyes looking worried. "And, perhaps, the food that you had eaten?" He asks hopefully.

"You were paid..." you frown, crossing your arms, feeling the sun brands on your palms. "I was with Sylea when she did."

"Er, well, there were... unexpected... damages, you see, and-"

"Oi. You. Girl." The harbormaster points a finger at you, stepping around Malir, motioning behind him with his other hand. From near a small dockside food stand, a pair of burly men, looking more ox than goat, rise, moving toward the boat. "You with 'im? 'Cause if you ain't, I suggest you grab your kit and get off 'is ship. This man's got a list of fines with the governor long as yer tail, and 'e means to collect."

Sylea descends the gangplank beside Baltas, the elder kobold cradling Emma in one arm. "Whats going on?" the dragoness asks. Djanna briefly explains the situation, and her mother shrugs. "Well, we have what we need, so we could just leave him."

Baltas curses softly, narrowing his eyes at Sylea. "You heartless... you have many times been empty-pursed."

Sylea waves him off. "That was me, this is him."

The harbormaster reaches out, grabbing hold of Malir by one of his nub-like horns, twisting sharply and bringing him to the ground as his burly associates crowd in, one producing irons from his heavy leather belt. You frown, ears flattening. You wanted your shell, but this...

"Wait..." you hold out your hand, ears and tail drooping. "How much to keep him out of trouble?"

"Eh? Why'd you wanna?" The harbormaster looks at you curiously as one of his goons snaps the irons on Malir's wrists, hefting the satyr to his hooves.

"Because I'm a good girl... now how much?" You frown, tapping your foot irritably.

"Hmm... well, his service to th' governor is about six-hundred weight, and as you don't look like you could even lift it, I doubt you have it on y-"

"The shell will cover it, but there wouldn't be much left..." Djanna says, stepping up beside you, tailtip slashing the air.

"Well, if that's the case, that's a lotta red to be wipin' out. Ye'd best be sure..."

"Whatever you want to do, I'll support it, but Nadia, we shouldn't show up empty handed." Djanna whispers. You consider the matter before finally nodding.

"All right, how about this... we'll pay off two-hundred of his debt. Will that make the governor just let him... I don't know... sit in time out or something?" You ask, tilting your head. The harbormaster looks at you, as if trying to decide if you're messing with him.

"Well, he'd still owe most of 'is debt, but it might save 'im from the headsman."

"Then that's what we'll do. He was bad, and he should be punished..." You glare at him for emphasis, "...but he was good to us, so I'll help him out a little."

"Oooh, lucky boy." Sylea grins. "If it were me, I'd have been asking for a front row seat!"

"Ye'r evil..." Baltas whispers, Emma the only thing saving him from a retaliatory swat.

"We'll have the governor's assessor down to look at the rest of Malir's things. 'E can take a look at this shell thing a' yours too. Give ye a fair weight for it too, if it's too big ta cart around with ya." With that, the harbormaster leads his men - and a grateful-looking Malir - away.

"Well, I suppose that's us then." Sylea says, stretching out her neck."

You whine softly and bound forward, wrapping your arms tightly around Sylea as your tail thrashes back and forth, ears down. "I'm gonna miss you!"

Sylea smiles and gathers you into her arms, resting her cheek against the top of your head. "Now, now, pup, we'll see one-another again, I promise. After all, who else is going to teach your own pups horrible habits?"

"Huh? My pups?" You tilt your head, pulling back to look at her curiously. Baltas mutters under his breath, making a strange sign like an eye with his free hand before setting Emma down on the pier, the slightly green kitsune stumbling over to Djanna and latching onto her arm.

"Oh, nevermind. Baltas, be a dear and fetch that worthless bastard former mate of mine, would you?" The elder kobold grunts and walks back up the gangplank.

"WAKEY WAKEY, fuckdamn hugelizard! Is time for flying now!" he crows as he disappears below deck.

"All right, girls, now listen." Sylea pulls you all in close, a hand on your shoulder and Djanna's. "It's going to be rough going from here on. The people that live around here are a bit wild. Passionate." She looks at Djanna, and the dragon girl nods. "But they are usually honest You can generally trust people with this symbol..." She bends, scratching an X with a small diamond shape in the center, "...somewhere on their clothes. They're guardians of the highways and serve under royal decree. Stay here tonight, and tomorrow, Djanna, start following the map I gave you. All right, darling?"

Djanna nods, and Sylea gathers the two of you once more into a hug. "You've grown up so much, you two. Take care of yourselves, all right?"

You can't help but sniffle, nodding as Baltas comes back above decks, giving the red-scaled man a careless heave down the gangplank before leaping to the pier himself. You give your uncle another tight hug, actually managing to lift the man a few inches off the pier.
>>
>>44065599
"HAH! My second-daughter is strong!" He shouts proudly, mussing your hair beyond any hope of repair before he claps Djanna on the shoulder. "And you! Be of taking care of Nadia. Strong she is, but simple like her uncle!" You whine, Baltas laughs, and Djanna nods.

The three of you walk Baltas, Sylea, and their prisoner to the end of the pier. Sylea turns to you with a grin on her face. "Hey... want to see something funny?"

"Sylea, no. No be of doing this."

"You want a ride, don't you?"

"...fuck..."

Sylea's form elongates, shimmering blue scales filling in over her human skin as she swells, transforming into a massive, serpentine dragon. She bends down, taking the red-scaled man in her jaws lightly as Baltas climbs aboard. She turns, nodding once to the girls before taking off at a dead run toward the city.

Screams of panic and fright rise from the poor souls who dive out of her way, carts and purchases are thrown aside from the small dockside market as she quickly takes flight, rising over the stalls close enough to tear free tarps and awnings, disturbing wares and sending shoppers scrambling for cover. Baltas can be heard cursing until they have risen high enough for his voice to be inaudible, and once they have risen above the cliff, they journey toward the North, leaving chaos in their wake.

Djanna's jaw is wide, a look of disbelief on her face.

"...Djanna. Can I live with you?" Emma asks in awe.
