You are Jason Fisher, 4th grader and best friend of a three-headed dog monster named Oscar. You and your father have recently moved from your small hometown in Virgina to Greensville, a modest sized city in northern Ohio. You have been enrolled in Lakeside Elementary School, and are still trying to adjust to the change.

On your first day at your new school, you made a new friend. Tyler, a reserved kid who tends to get picked on by some of your classmates, became your friend after you got in a food fight with the kids that pick on him. Though you got sent to the principal's office for it, you were glad you managed to make a new friend here. Of course, Oscar was not so keen on your new friend, as he believes Tyler may have a monster friend as well, along with four other kids in your class. You didn't ask him about it yet, but you doubt you'll have to worry about Tyler trying to pick a fight with you and Oscar. Whether the others in your class will try to pick a fight with you or not though, you're not sure.

“...Yet police have not found any leads to the killer's identity at this time. The Greensville Police Department wishes to remind everyone to lock their doors and stay in well-lit areas after dark.”

The radio station's news report plays while your dad drives you to school in the morning. You don't pay it much mind, as your dad comes to a stop in your school's car loop.

“Remember, ask your friend if he wants to hang out tomorrow. If he does, get his family's phone number so we can set something up.”

“Okay dad.”

Your father seemed really happy when you told him you made a new friend yesterday. You didn't tell him the part where you got sent to the principal's office, but since the principal didn't call home you suppose it's fine not to tell him. Besides, you didn't want to worry him by telling him you got in trouble on your first day here.

As you enter the classroom, you see that the teacher is here on time today, organizing papers at her desk before class starts. You see that Tyler is reading a book this time, probably because the teacher would get mad if she saw him pull out his DS in class. There's still a seat open next to him, you could probably move there and the teacher wouldn't care. Alternatively, your old seat by that weird girl is still open, along with all the other desks around her. You remember how the kids that were picking on you and Tyler yesterday seemed to be afraid of her, maybe if you sit next to her they'll leave you alone then? She is kind of creepy though, plus she kind of stinks too.

You take a seat next to Tyler near the front of the class. He looks up from his book and nods to you when you take a seat.

After you're seated, the teacher puts her papers away and stands up at her desk. "Good morning everyone! Today we're going to start with some reading, so I'd like everyone to stand up and grab a textbook from the back table there."

Everyone gets up and crowds around the back table, where bunch of textbooks have been stacked. You and Jason talk a bit while you wait in line to grab one.

"Hey, you didn't get in trouble with your parents because of yesterday, did you?"

You shake your head. "No, I didn't tell my dad. I figured it was fine not to, since the principal let me go with a warning."

"Oh, well that's a relief."

"Yeah. I don't think my dad would be mad if I told him why I got in trouble, but still."

You grab one of the textbooks, a hefty gold and brown Reading book. The cover is damaged, and upon inspection you find that people have been writing on the inside of the cover, just like the textbooks back at your old school. You guess some things are the same no matter where you go.

"Okay class, open up to page 147. I'll read the first paragraph aloud, then we'll all take turns reading a paragraph at a time."

>1x10 - Failure

The story you read in class is really boring. Honestly, most of the stories you've read as part of a class have been, but trying to listen while most of your classmates are reading really slowly makes it all the more boring. Eventually, you just start to tune everything out without noticing.

"Jason?"

You look up with a start. "Huh, yeah?"

"It's your turn to read." The teacher says.

"Oh, uh..."

You desperately look for where the last person left off. Unfortunately you can't find it, and end up looking at the teacher sheepishly.

The teacher sighs. "Honestly Jason, try to pay attention in class. I know you're still new, but you still need to keep up with the rest of the class."

You feel your cheeks start to burn in shame. Some of your classmates start to giggle at your expense.

"Now then, Tyler, would you mind picking up where we left off instead?"

After the class finishes reading, the teacher has everyone answer the questions at the end of the section. Once it's time for lunch, everyone passes their papers to the teacher and heads for the cafeteria in a single file line.

You grab your lunch and sit with Tyler in the cafeteria. He pulls out his DS and starts playing while you both eat.

"Ugh, that sucked." You complain, still a little embarrassed from the incident in class.

"It wasn't that bad." Tyler says, trying to console you.

"No, but it was still embarrassing. I think I heard those jerks from yesterday laughing at me too."

"Ignore them, I'm pretty sure a few of them have done the same thing before anyways."

You groan, and start eating your lunch. Your mistake wasn't that big of a deal, but it was still embarrassing. Getting laughed at by the people who threw food at you yesterday didn't sit well with you either, but you get over it.

Today, you and Tyler are sitting at a different table, away from the group from yesterday. You see them talking amongst themselves a few tables away, minding their own business for now. Some of your classmates are sitting at the table next to yours, but they don't pay you much mind. By the door, you see the weird girl slip out of the cafeteria again, food tray in hand. You think to yourself that the teachers should probably learn to pay attention too, since they apparently never notice her sneaking out.

"By the way, Tyler, are you doing anything tomorrow?"

Tyler looks up from his DS. "Tomorrow? No, why?"

"Was just wondering if you wanted to hang out since there's no school tomorrow."

Tyler thinks about it for a moment. "I'll have to ask my sister, but if she says it's okay then sure."

You raise an eyebrow. "You're sister? What about your parents?"

"My parents are usually busy with work, so my sister's usually the one that takes care of me." Tyler explains.

"Ohhh, okay. Well, my dad said to get your family's number so we could meet up, do you know it?"

Tyler nods, and you write down his sister number on a sheet of paper you pull out from your backpack.

"So what about you?" Tyler asks. "You mention your dad a lot, but what about your mom? Is she busy a lot too?"

You hesitate to answer his question. You don't like talking about your mom, she and your dad got divorced a while ago. You were too young at the time to remember everything, but you remember your mom told people some really bad things about your dad that weren't true. Your dad was really sad for a while after that, but he cheered up after you started living with him for good. She hasn't called or visited you ever since, and to be honest you can't say you miss her.

I suppose it doesn't, but I tend to be really picky when I'm looking for character art. Part of the reason was also because I didn't want to give off the wrong impression should someone recognize the source of the pic.
>>44155163
It wasn't cropped images, it was the source itself I remember one particular example when I went "Hey, this looks alright. Looks like this character has his own tag, let me click it and see if there are any pics of him in a better pose".

Said character was from a porn VN or something, because immediately after clicking the tag I saw a lot of shit I didn't want to see. At that point I closed the tab, cleared my history, and started looking again.

There were your mistakes.

I don't think an "I RECOGNIZE THAT BULGE" moment would actually make anyone confused about the intended SFW nature of the quest though.

You shake your head. "No, I live with my dad. My mom left a long time ago."

"Oh...I'm sorry."

"It's fine. It was a long time ago, I'm over it."

You see the teacher hold up her hand at the front of the class, signaling that it's time for everyone to start lining up.

"Looks like it's time for recess." You say, changing the subject. "Come on, let's get going."

Tyler puts his DS away so the teacher won't see, and you both get in line with the others. Curiously, you notice the weird girl is in line before you despite the fact you saw her sneak out earlier.

The class heads out to the playground and everyone splits up. You see some of the kids grab a kickball and start making teams on the field, while others start climbing on the jungle gym or jumping down the slides. The kids that picked on you earlier play on the playground, while the weird girl sits on a bench and starts reading a book by herself.

You point to the kids assembling on the field. "Wanna play kickball?" You ask.

Tyler shrugs. "Sure."

You both approach the field, where everyone is trying to assemble teams. The team captains, a boy with short brown hair and, surprisingly, a girl with long brown hair, turn to face the two of you when you approach.

"Oh hey, you're the new kid right?" The boy asks.

You nod. "Yeah, is it alright if me and Tyler play too?"

"Yeah, sure. Just get in line with the others."

You oblige, and the team captains start making picks.

"New kid, you're with me." The boy says, pointing to you.

Tyler, now the last person in line, goes to the girl's team. Your team is kicking first, so you stand behind the plastic orange plate the kids laid out and wait for your turn to kick.

Your team captain goes first, kicking the ball high into the air. It hits the ground before anyone can catch it, and he makes it to second base before anyone can get him out.

Being next in line, you step up to the plate. The girl leading the other team rolls the ball to you.

You kick too soon, and end up kicking the ball low and to center field. It doesn't go far, but it does go. Before you even have time to run, the girl that tossed it to you catches it. The ball already touched the ground, so it's not an automatic out, but you don't have much time to run.

"Run!" Your team yells. You oblige, running as fast as you can towards the first base.

Of course, since the ball didn't go far you don't have much time to get there. About halfway there, the girl closes in and throws the ball at you.

We're looking for matching pairs. 2 3s would've been better than 1 ten here

Or hell, three ones would've been amazing even, as we were going for a length win here and not width (width is actual number count, for things like learning or long distance running width is better than length).

You duck reflexively, but the ball hits you in the back.

"Out!" The girl shouts, and you stop running.

Looking back, you see your team's captain already made it to home base while the girl was busy trying to get you out. Well, at least that's good.

"Sorry about that." You apologize to the captain.

He shrugs. "Don't worry about it."

You wait at the back of the line with him, while everyone else takes their turn to kick. Eventually, two other people are out and your team takes the field.

The other team's captain kicks first. She kicks it out towards left field, close to where you're standing.

I'm using the Monsters and Other Childish Things system of rolling. Basically, you want to roll matching numbers. In this case, you got two 10s, which is good. The number of matches determines how well you accomplish a task, while the number on the dice (in this case, 10) decides how fast you do it.

The quest is still fresh, I'll iron out any kinks in the system as needed.

"Out!" You yell, as you catch the ball in mid-air. The girl stops before she reaches first base, and heads to the back of the line.

Your captain gives you a thumbs up. "Nice catch...uh..."

"Jason."

"Jason, right! Nice catch Jason."

Next up is Tyler, who doesn't kick the ball too far either. Someone on your team catches the ball before it hits the ground, getting Tyler out as well. The game continues for a bit, before your teacher calls for everyone to line up again.

"Man, I suck at kickball." Tyler complains while you get in line.

"You did alright." You reassure him. To be honest, Tyler actually was pretty bad at kicking and running. He was pretty good at catching and throwing though, that's something.

The rest of the school day is fairly uneventful. The teacher has everyone answer a few math questions from the book, but doesn't assign any homework over the weekend. Finally, class is over and everyone starts leaving. You walk to the car loop with Tyler and talk for a bit, before your dad pull in to pick you up.

"So, how was your day sport?" Your dad asks as you get buckled up.

"It was alright. Tyler said he could probably hang out tomorrow if his sister says it's okay."

"His sister?"

"He said his parents are busy most of the time, so his sister's the one that takes care of him." You explain.

"Oh, okay. And did you get his sister's number?"

"Yup, I wrote it down."

Your dad nods. "Alright then. We'll see what we can set up for tomorrow then."

The car pulls to a stop at a red light on the way home. While you wait for it to turn green, your dad points to a Burger King sign up ahead.

"I might not have time to cook tonight, feel like grabbing something from Burger King?"

You shrug. Burger King's toys weren't as good as McDonalds, but that was fine.

Once the light turned green, your dad drove up to the Burger King and parked outside. The drive thru seemed busy, so you both climbed out of the car and went inside.

The rest of the day is fairly normal. Your dad finished plugging your games in, so you play some video games and watch some TV while your dad works on his computer. When night comes around, your dad informs you that it's about time for you to go to bed.

A while after you've gone to bed, however, you are awoken by the sound of growling.

"Oscar? Is that you?" You ask, rubbing your eyes.

Indeed, Oscar is standing by your window, growling at something.

"I smell something outside." He tells you.

"Is it close?" You ask, sitting yourself up. If Oscar is growling at something, that can only mean one of two things. Either a cat has made the foolish mistake of walking into your yard, or there's a monster somewhere outside.

"It's pretty far, but I can smell it." Oscar says, placing his front paws on the window so his three heads can see outside. "Can you open the window? They're too close to our house, I want to go make them leave."

Word to the wise, leaving monsters to do there own thing usually results in exactly what you'd expect happening. Seriously, they love the kid they stay with and will do anything to protect them, but if the kids not involved they kindv'e lose any sense of morality whatsoever.

Granted, when I ran a character in this system mine pretty much just murdered squirrels and scared the hell out of people resulting in several urban legends about the loch ness monster in various bodies of water.

You climb out of bed and grab your shoes. "Fine, but I'm going with you. You remember what happened the last time I let you go off alone."

"It was just a cat, not like anyone cared about it."

"It was inside someone's car, Oscar. And you broke through the window to get it."

"Alright, fine, maybe I got carried away. Anyways, you ready to go?"

You finish tying your shoe laces and nod. Sliding your window open, you climb onto Oscar's back and he jump out the window, landing on the ground silently. He runs really fast, but you do a good job hanging on. All the lights in the houses you pass are turned off, thankfully, meaning everyone should be asleep right now. Good thing too, if someone looked out their window and saw Oscar they'd probably flip.

Oscar finally comes to a stop at your neighborhood's entrance. All three of his head sniff the air, and he starts to growl.

"It's somewhere close, I can smell it."

Sure enough, you notice something start to climb out of the drainage hole on the side of the road. It's black, slimy, and makes disgusting squelching noises as it starts to climb out of the sewers.

"Get back Jason, I'll handle this jerk."

The monster, a large blob of black slime, opens it's mouth and reveals rows of sharp teeth. Tentacles stretch out from it's body and stab towards Oscar.

>>Monster combat tutorial
>When Oscar enters a battle, declare what you want to do using which of his parts (recorded on your character sheet). I will then call for a roll using the appropriate dice (with a miscellaneous bonus or penalty where necessary). The more matches you have, the better the damage. Certain parts have extra effects on a successful attack as well, detailed on the character sheet.
>System may experience changes where necessary. Suggestions and feedback at the end of the thread are greatly appreciated.

The funny thing about monsters in Monsters and Other Childish Things is, a monster can look like anything. It can look like Oscar, for example, or it could look like a robot, or a cartoon character, or anything within their kid's imagination really. Their kid has a strong effect on what they look like, so you could wind up with anything from a traditional monster like a cerberus to Bugs Bunny with chainsaw arms.

Oscar leaps forward, evading the slime monster's tentacles. They stab into the road where he once stood, piercing the cement. While past it's guard, Oscar bites into it's gooey flesh, tearing it in three different directions. There's a loud gurgling noise from the slime monster, before it swats Oscar away with one of it's tentacles. Oscar lands on his feet, mouths covered in slime.

Where Oscar bit the monster, you see red marks start to smolder until the slime monster's body bursts into dark flames. The monster starts to swat at the flames desperately with it's tentacles, trying to extinguish the flame.

Fun fact: Monsters don't obey standard physics or respond to most normal weaponry, the army could deploy tanks against one to minimal effects, sure it'd hurt but they'd regenerate from there wounds in minutes, even from something extreme like a nuclear bomb. However, where it gets weird is that, despite how useless a normal handgun or rifle would be against a monster, when put in a child who is linked to a monsters hand, such as us, it'll actually effect them, and do damage that will last for an extended period of a time.

The other odd thing is that a handgun will be as effective as a baseball bat, a thrown rock, or even a thrown punch. Still, this is a very poor course of action as monsters are still as dangerous as usual to a monster-linked child and can tear your head off in one bite.

Truly, the only thing that can put a monster down reliably is another monster. This is also why the ""men in black"" (military/government) would likely kidnap you if you publically came out as having a monster. Because they're fucking terrified and indoctrinating a child into the system would give them an advantage they desperately need.

Also maybe there will be ninja turtles there (anythings possible nowadays, in one campaign of this some guy made his monster have the ability to swap other peoples relationship dice to him, resulting in severe mind fuckery (Notable quotes including someones sister being a ten year old boy as well as a 12 year old player character having a father who was younger then him).

Obviously it was an unpaired monster, no human was nearby.

Unless the kid told it to go out on its own for a reason. Or was waiting in the sewer, but then Oscar could smell them.
>>
>>44160937
The way it works is your base damage is your number of matches -1. That means that no matches does no damage, and one match does 1 damage. 1 damage is still alright though, because a monster can only have 10 dice max in one part, and the more damage you to it that part the less dice it has to roll (In this monster's case, he's nearly incapable of defending himself now with only 3 dice on his tentacles part).
>>
>>44161024
>>44160983
As a general rule, kids learn quickly not to let monsters out of there sight, they are like very well meaning giant toddlers, they might go out and scare the deer, they might go and eat a bunch of squirrels, or tear through a car to get a cat, or they might decide your teacher has been a bit rude to you and that they can make it better by eating that teacher and wearing his/her skin. Seriously that last ones literally an example from the PDF.

>Sure enough, you notice something start to climb out of the drainage hole on the side of the road. It's black, slimy, and makes disgusting squelching noises as it starts to climb out of the sewers.

Is that a drainage hole with bars on it that it's somehow separating and oozing around, or an unbarred opening it's squeezing through?

Either way too small for Jason to pursue, isn't it, although Oscar can shrink.
>>
>>44161076
Also there are evil clowns in the sewers that eat children in this setting... I think... Or maybe that was from a stephen king book and I'm actually insane, either or. Lets find out!

>>44161041
Oh, dicepools are also HP.

I was wondering how much damage a ten-year-old boy and a monster could take before they die. That answers that.
>>
>>44161223
Yep. We can not take much, also monsters do exponentially more damage to people then they do to monsters. That slime thing could probably one hit us or two hit us, although our monster would rather die than let that happen (I know monsters take physical damage when we take emotional damage, which sucked when I got turned down for my extremely lame pick up attempt on another player in a game once).
>>
>>44161152
No that was Stephen. Altough I guess monsters can totally take that form

"Oscar, people are starting to wake up!" You warn him.

"Just give me a little longer! I've almost got him!" Oscar objects.

"Oscar, no, we need get home before anyone notices us."

There's a moment of hesitation where Oscar looks between the weakened monster and you, then all three of his heads sigh.

"You're lucky I like you Jason. Come on, let's go."

Oscar crouches down to let you climb on his back, then bolts down one of the side streets. The slime monster slips back into the sewer, leaving nothing but two holes in the road and a quickly dissolving trail of slime as proof it was ever there.
>>
>>44161608
------
Back at home, you close your window and sit down on your bed. Oscar sulks in the corner, still a bit moody that he couldn't finish off the slime monster.

"Sorry Oscar, but you said it yourself: We can't let anyone know that you exist, so we had to get out of there."

One of Oscars heads looks at you and sighs. "Yeah, I know. Still, I had that Unbound right where I wanted him. Little longer and I would have had him."

Unbound. That's the word Oscar uses for monsters that don't have a kid. The way he explained it to you was that some monsters, like him, find a kid to be their partner and survive by feeding on their kid's emotions. Some monsters, however, don't have a kid, and the only way for them to survive is by eating humans. Oscar said he can tell the difference between them by their smell: Apparently Unbound monsters smell like rotten eggs to him. And blood. You've only seen two Unbound monsters before, both of which were eaten by Oscar after he beat them.

"You'll get him next time." You tell him. "Besides, I don't think he looked very tasty anyways."

"...Yeah, I guess you're right." Oscar finally agrees. "Besides, something seemed off about him anyways."

"What do you mean?"

"It looked like he was really weak, like he hadn't eaten in a long time. I guess that's why he came here, odds are he was planning to break into someone's house and make them his snack."

You scratch your head. "Well, I'm glad we stopped him then. He's still out there though, we should probably finish him if we see him again."

"Agreed. Though I don't think he'll be coming back here any time soon, not if he has half a brain."

You shrug. "We'll see I guess. Anyways, I'm tired. Wake me up if you smell him again."
>>

-------
The black van sat idle at the neighborhood entrance. Men in suits examined the scene, taking slime samples and scanning them with odd machinery.

"That's a positive match." One of them says. "Subject #437 must have been here."

"The trail leads to the sewers. Send bravo team in to look for him, he can't be far." Another says.

"It looks like 437 was fighting something here." One of them suggests, holding a severed tentacle in his gloved hand.

"Any clue what he was fighting?"

"Negative, sir. Probably another runaway, maybe some kind of territorial dispute or something."

The apparent leader shakes his head. "Hurry up and clean up the scene before anyone wakes up. Whatever 437 was fighting, it's probably long gone by now. Bravo team will handle 437."

"Sir, what are the team's orders should they find him?"

"Exterminate it on sight."

The subordinate nods, and starts to dial a number.

I feel like the kid's stats are kinda lame in this game anyway considering that you don't really have a choice to go offensive. The only reason that you have a kid's stats tacked on is so that the monsters have some obvious vulnerability.
>>
>>44162167
You get to use them. Kids stats are useful because your monster is literally the nuclear option, its like bringing a gun to a middle school brawl. You sure as hell want to be able to fight without that monster.

Alright, but the thing is that if you're the only one with the monster then this is a pretty strange game. It's just as well that no one has a monster and you play an RPG with just the kids. But tacking on multiple people with monsters means that you're only really playing one useful character at a time (and the other one is a liability).

Feels kinda...cheap.
>>
>>44162260
Except there are things monsters literally cannot do. Like deal with mundanes.

Notice he doesn't have a Face stat, or Brains stat, or literally any skills. The only thing he's good for is combat. Are you aware there are things to do besides combat?
>>
>>44162260
I mean, you both could be useful at the same time, its just that a monsters solution to a locked door is to tear it down while a kids might be to pick the lock or convince the owner to open it up. Or just steal the keys.

In addition, kids are just too squishy to stand up to the kind of violence monsters can do.

>>44162289
Monsters have useful abilities instead of those stats and those usefuls are what they rely on, for example I had a monster that could deafen, stun, and distract enemies with his extremely annoying and loud commentary, as well as having the ability to swim and turn water into Mio. I think he got the last one because he watched too much television.
>>
>>44161669
May have stumbled on the optimal solution by accident.

If Oscar was allowed to go on his own, he would not have retreated, and would likely have witnesses.

If Oscar was kept at home, there was a risk that the slime monster would come closer to Jason's house, forcing his hand. Resulting in a conflict much closer to his own home, which is bad.

This way, the conflict was relatively far from home and much harder to trace back to him.
>>
>>44162167
A kid's stats still matter. Sometimes it's not a good idea to pull out your monster, like >>44162189 said.

Also, I haven't had a chance to demonstrate this in game yet, but a kid can still contribute in a monster fight. Monsters are connected to their kid and feed off their emotions, so when their kid is upset it physically hurts them. Thus, by throwing some nasty insults at their kid or punching them in the face till they cry, a kid can actually hurt another kid's monster. It'll piss that monster off, but if you're fighting then you've probably already crossed that threshold.

Granted, that doesn't help when you come across a monster doesn't have a kid, like the slime monster.
>>
>>44162373
I mean... we could punch the slime monster and do damage, but it'd be a terrible idea.

That reminds me, one of the examples in the book of a fight was someone insulting another kids mom repeatedly versus getting punched in the face.

>>
>>44162446
Honestly, I didn't know what it was until my GM told me. Its effectively the most useless useful you could possibly be given. My GM was weird like that.
>>
>>44162289
I understand that, but it seems like you're playing an odd bundle deal RPG. On one hand you have a person who can interact with the world normally and the other fucks everything up. These two things are mutually exclusive since there's no situation that a 10 year old kid should be in that he can meaningfully help his monster in a fight without getting wrecked. Similarly, the monster cannot face so he's slashed from any social interaction.

I suppose I'm getting caught up on the "Why Monsters" part. The only reason it's monsters and not all "Weird Kids" (or rather, kids with the ability to manifest ridiculous abilities at the expense of being ostracized if someone recognizes them) is so that the GM has room to fuck you over, which feels gimmicky to me.
>>
>>44162475
Oh its entirely to fuck you over, but its hillarious when it happens. I've heard great stories in this. Also why several things such as swapping relationship dice and teleporting were banned from the campaign.
