Your name is Takashi Wakui. You are a sixteen-year old, Japanese high school student living in a world where half of humanity possesses Personas—manifestations of inner souls as demons, spirits or deities. In the past, you had been one of the unlucky ordinaries lacking a Persona. Then a game called AETHER was forcibly installed on your smartphone. Initially it appeared to be little more than a piece of nasty spyware, extremely persistent and impossible to remove.

Then it sucked you into to a realm called the Blackened Void, where you fought Shadows and gained your first Persona--Ippon-Datara of the Fool Arcana, the degraded blacksmith demon god. Now you are the Wild Card of the 22nd Century, capable of wielding Personas of each Major Arcana. Turns out AETHER is more than a simple, reality-immersive game; it is an accursed phenomenon superimposing itself over an otherworldly realm, consisting of vicious monsters, decrepit ruins and glamorous treasures. And to make matters worse, you and several others have been condemned as its chosen Players.

For what purpose does the game exist, what mysteries lie within and how will you Players achieve victory?

<THE_FIRST> Hey Celeste
<THE_FIRST> Are you feeling okay
<THE_FIRST> Mandatory leader shit after every mission it’s my obligation sorry for the interruption
<chocolat_orange> hey, that rhymed! :P
<THE_FIRST> Huh
<THE_FIRST> Well anyway
<THE_FIRST> How are you?
<chocolat_orange> i’m fine. i’m lying on my bed, listening to the radio right now. what about you?
<THE_FIRST> I’m doing okay
<THE_FIRST> Just had dinner with nee-san
<THE_FIRST> But I’m more concerned about you
<chocolat_orange> why? i just told you i was okay, didn’t i?
<chocolat_orange> is this about me getting hurt fighting that robot?
<THE_FIRST> Of course it is
<THE_FIRST> Anybody would be concerned when they saw an entire ammunition’s crate worth of 10mm pierce through their friend at once
<THE_FIRST> You were bleeding like you were about to swim down the Sanzu River
<chocolat_orange> was it really that bad?
<THE_FIRST> Are you kidding me
<THE_FIRST> Did you take a good look at yourself
<THE_FIRST> Your entire front was coated in blood
<THE_FIRST> You were down on one knee and shivering like hell too
<THE_FIRST> A complete sitting duck for the robot
<chocolat_orange> mmm, i admit that does sound bad
<chocolat_orange> but it worked out in the end, didn’t it?
<chocolat_orange> you healed me up pretty fast. and after we talked to fumika, we went to the hot springs, right?
<chocolat_orange> i took a second look at my body when i was in the shower. there weren’t any scars at all.
<chocolat_orange> so don’t worry about me, takashi-kun! sati might only have an e in endurance, but i’m not about to go dying any time soon.
<chocolat_orange> you can count on your cute magician friend :D
<THE_FIRST> You seem to be damn optimistic about this
<chocolat_orange> well there’s no use dwelling on the past. it already happened and we can’t change it.
<THE_FIRST> I’d thought being shot would have a bigger psychological impact on you
<THE_FIRST> Not that’s a good thing
<chocolat_orange> maybe.
>>
<chocolat_orange> but you were there for me, takashi-kun. you rushed over immediately to help me. you should take pride in that.
<chocolat_orange> because of you i’m here, i’m alive and i’m happy.
<chocolat_orange> besides i knew the risks of going on aether’s missions and accepted them. and in the end, we won.
<THE_FIRST> Uh
<THE_FIRST> When you put it that way
<chocolat_orange> so cheer up, leader! there’s nothing to be sad about right now. think positive and face the world with a big smile. that’s the way of the magician!
<THE_FIRST> I knew a Magician guy in my old high school
<THE_FIRST> He was always depressed because he kept trying to get a girlfriend with the girls in my class and kept failing
<THE_FIRST> Besides I ain’t a Magician I’m a Fool
<chocolat_orange> :P
<chocolat_orange> you know what i mean. but fool is the number zero and zero can become anything.
<chocolat_orange> well…since you sound so anxious about this…
<chocolat_orange> i promise i’ll be more careful from now on. in fact, i’ll work on some speed training tomorrow. will that do, takashi-kun?
<THE_FIRST> Look
<THE_FIRST> I’m just glad you’re alright
<THE_FIRST> Didn’t mean to talk so long or sound like a complete downer
<THE_FIRST> Just trying to be cautious y’know
<THE_FIRST> Even if you know the risks the Blackened Void is still very dangerous
<THE_FIRST> It’s not a sim so…
<THE_FIRST> You get the idea
<chocolat_orange> that’s understandable.
<chocolat_orange> you’re being considerate. that’s good! :)
<THE_FIRST> Haha
<THE_FIRST> I appreciate it
<THE_FIRST> I’ve got to talk to Fumika for a bit
<THE_FIRST> So I guess this is goodnight
<THE_FIRST> See you at school tomorrow
<chocolat_orange> goodnight!

<THE_FIRST> You didn’t talk much back at the safehouse
<THE_FIRST> Even when Celeste Akikazu and I told you all the crazy stuff about the Wild Card and AETHER
<THE_FIRST> You didn’t react much
<THE_FIRST> You just seemed to stare and accept it all
<Azure Scholar> Would you rather had I gawked at you like an animal on display at the local zoo?
<THE_FIRST> No but weren’t you at least a bit surprised.
<Azure Scholar> I abandoned any notion of sanity in my life the moment AETHER opened itself on my laptop and forced me into Area 019. Apparently it’s not enough to prepare for the worst anymore; I now have to consider the unearthly and the unknown now.
<Azure Scholar> Furthermore, I noticed you switching Personas mid-battle with the T39 automaton. The conclusion was simple.
<THE_FIRST> I guess I should have thought of that
<THE_FIRST> Sounds really damn obvious in hindsight
<Azure Scholar> Indeed so.
<Azure Scholar> Besides, you should see some of the things we mercenaries encounter on our runs. And from an average high school student’s point of view, I was already beyond help when I took up the occupation of a freelance hacker on the side. Most adolescent girls don’t skip their classes in order to go and raid the offices of a megacorporation.
<Azure Scholar> As they say, truth is stranger than fiction.
<Azure Scholar> Your truth may very well be the strangest of them all.
<THE_FIRST> We really need to sit down and have a proper talk about past
<THE_FIRST> Sounds like you have a lot of stories to tell
<Azure Scholar> And I would very much like the chance to inquire you about the nature of the Wild Card.
<THE_FIRST> Didn’t I tell you about it during the meeting in the safehouse?
<Azure Scholar> You merely gave a brief overview. It was common knowledge, the type found on Wikipedia and other online encyclopedias. I wish to know more.
<THE_FIRST> How much is this more

<Azure Scholar> Everything you know and everything you learn about your powers in the future.
<Azure Scholar> For example, what does it feel like to switch between Personas? Do they impact your mental state in any way? Where do your Personas come from? Are there any limits as to how many you can carry? What is the difference between you and the Last Word? So on and so forth.
<THE_FIRST> That’s a lot
<THE_FIRST> You know Celeste and Akikazu didn’t ask so many questions
<THE_FIRST> They just sort of
<THE_FIRST> Accepted it
<THE_FIRST> Like it didn’t matter that much
<Azure Scholar> I disagree with them.
<THE_FIRST> Why?
<Azure Scholar> You have made history by being the second Fool since the Mass Awakening. You are an impossibility that by all rights should not exist. There are individuals in this world who would destroy their entire families if it meant they could gain a single drop of your blood. The Order of the White Messiah and the Ring of Deva would worship you as the Last Word’s successor. They would bend to your every word. You are an individual demanding further investigation.
<THE_FIRST> That sounds a little creepy to be honest
<THE_FIRST> No screw that it’s freaking me out
<THE_FIRST> Especially that part about those two warring religions jesus christ
<THE_FIRST> You’re like verbally dissecting me
<Azure Scholar> I desire knowledge for my own personal satisfaction. Curiosity is part of human nature, is it not? If you’re worried about this information leaking out, don’t be. I am aware of the ramifications should anyone discover your identity as a Fool. I do not wish to be caught in the crossfire.
<THE_FIRST> Being a mercenary would mean keeping some level of confidentiality towards your clients
<Azure Scholar> Correct.

<Azure Scholar> If nothing else, having a proper understanding of your capabilities and limits should be beneficial towards our exploration of the Blackened Void. Nothing will be lost by communicating with myself and the rest of the team.
<Azure Scholar> You don’t have to answer me immediately, but I’d appreciate it if we had our discussion as soon as possible.
<THE_FIRST> Somehow I get the impression that even if I didn’t tell you shit
<THE_FIRST> You’d find the answers all by yourself
>Azure Scholar> That is also correct.
<THE_FIRST> I’ll think about it
<THE_FIRST> You mind if we take a break from all of this AETHER business?
<THE_FIRST> Like a week or until after Golden Week
<THE_FIRST> Celeste and Akikazu both agree
<Azure Scholar> That is acceptable.
<Azure Scholar> Now, would that be all? I have work to do.
<THE_FIRST> Yeah I just wanted to make sure you were okay
<THE_FIRST> Seems like I needn’t have worried
<THE_FIRST> Goodnight Fumika
<Azure Scholar> Until next time.

[8:00 am, 3-May-2129 (TUESDAY)]

The rest of the week passes by in a blur. You wake up, go to school, eat lunch with your friends, attend club activities in the afternoon, return home and study for the rest of the night. It is a mishmash of boring classes, cafeteria food, packed train rides and troublesome homework that you can’t bring yourself to fully comprehend.

Well, it could be a lot worse. As dull as the days leading up to the present were, at least you weren’t being shot from thirteen different directions by the machine gun of a killer robot. Anyway, you shouldn’t be focusing on the past. You’ve got important shit to do.

Such as eating this delicious breakfast.

“So, today is the first day of Golden Week!” Shizuka exclaims, as you shovel a nice helping of bacon into your mouth. “Got any plans, Takashi?”

You shrug your shoulders. “Dunno, nee-san. I haven’t really thought about it. I’ve been busy lately.”

“Whatever you do, make you sure you don’t regret it!” Shizuka replies, with a big smile as usual. “Enjoy your holidays to the fullest. They don’t come around often.”

“What about you nee-san?” You ask. “Wait, don’t Anti-Shadow Operatives have to work all year round? Never mind then.”

At the mention of this, Shizuka breaks out into a mischievous smile. It’s the type of playful grin she sprouts when she hides a surprise present from you. “Fufufu…you’re mistaken, my cute little brother. Why don’t you take a guess?”

“At what?”

“What I’m going to say next, duh.”

You take a gulp of orange juice. “Can’t be bothered.”

“Come on, give it a try.”

“Nah.”

She pouts. “How mean…you’re no fun.”

“Hurry up and tell me already.” You grunt.

“I applied for leave last week and got it! That means I’ll be staying at home tomorrow night.” Shizuka says, smiling with a radiance as brilliant as the sun. “Isn’t that wonderful?”

“Huh. That is pretty cool, all things assumed.” It would be nice to have some company at night. This might be the chance to level up your Strength Social Link. You’ve been neglecting it lately.

Wait, are you thinking of your beloved nee-san in terms of numbers? Even if your feelings towards her are true, that plain isn’t right! You mentally slap yourself in the forehead.

“Hmm…I wonder what the two of us can do?” Shizuka ponders, “Maybe we can go out and eat at a restaurant. Viola told me about this fantastic little ramen place in the Silver Town. It’s a real shame only Tsugumi was able to get leave with me…”

“Don’t rush, nee-san.” You reply. “You’ve got the whole day to think about it.”

The two of you resume eating breakfast. Shizuka washes the dishes and then goes to her room to rest. You are free now. What will you do?

Could be. There are probably at least a few rumors about there being previous Fools. “Since I have three days of holidays, I think I can afford to relax a bit.” You mutter to yourself as you head back towards your room. You boot open your laptop and select an ebook from your electronic library. Yes, it’s ‘How to Think Big’, the book the drama club captain, Kaz Inaba, generously gifted you. If you had to be honest with yourself, you had completely forgotten about it over the past couple of weeks. Nothing personal, it had simply dropped down the priority list as you contested with AETHER’s shenanigans and the upcoming exams. It would have continued to remain at the back of the mind, had the captain not brought it up after drama club last Friday.

“By the way, Takashi, did you ever get around to reading that ebook I gave you? It’s quite a riveting tale. Why, I’ve given it to at least several dozen other club members and acquaintances. They’ve enjoyed it, yes they have…”

“Well…uh…I…”

"Why, one of my favourite parts is Chapter 7, where it tells the readers about..."

Kaz was so enthusiastic you didn’t have the heart to tell him that no, you weren’t reading it at all. You ended making some small excuse and hurrying out of the auditorium, the guilt weighing down on you like lead weights strapped to your ankles.

You have a chance now. You click on the little book icon in the menu and wait for the ebook to finish loading.

>The original draft of this book was written in 2055 by a successful businessman. It has been edited to fit with the modern age. Since then, it has improved millions of lives across the world. There are no empty promises in this book, only proven methods! You don’t need to be an intellectual or have innate talent to achieve success and satisfaction, but you do need to learn how to understand the ways of thinking and behaving to get you there.
>Work had and believe you can succeed. You almost certainly will!

…so says the blurb. You flick through the first section. It tells the tale of how a student council president turned a dejected rival life’s around by convincing him to believe in himself. Said rival then gained the courage to face life’s hardships. He put in tremendous effort into improving himself. It was very difficult at first, but he kept remembering the student council president’s words and persevered. He studied hard and pushed himself to become more confident and assertive. Eventually, he became great enough to stand next to the student council president as her vice-president! The two of them then worked alongside each other to transform their school into one of the best in of the country…

Reading this story stirs tender emotions within your heart…

Time passes. Kaz was right, the book is very absorbing. You can’t help but be immersed in it. Yet, a niggling little doubt scratches at you from the corner of your head. It grows into a sizable tick that you cannot ignore any longer.

“Why are you doing this? Exams are in four days. Hurry up and study already!” it screams.

You concede that it has a point. Doesn’t excuse its rude behavior, but whatever. You create a bookmark and shut the ebook reader down. You then shove your laptop to one side and gather your school textbooks.

If you do well on your exams, kaa-san will give you Macca as a reward. That’s more or less your primary motivation. Your reputation around school also may increase and you won’t bring dishonor towards your family. That’s really only a secondary concern.

>Exams will be done with a series of d100 dice rolls with critfails disabled. Multiple rolls may be taken for some subjects.
>Since you have managed to reach Decent INTELLIGENCE before the deadline, you receive a +8 buff to all subjects.

You lay out the book on the table, one by one. There are seven subjects: Mathematics, Japanese, English, Mythology, History, Politics/Economics, Computer Programming and Information Technology. Mathematics is your best…

>+15 buff to that subject.

…and English is your worst.
>+0 buff to that subject.

<THE_FIRST> Hey Fumika
<THE_FIRST> I’m studying for exams
<THE_FIRST> Want to study together
<Azure Scholar> I refuse. It would be a waste of time.
<THE_FIRST> Sorry what?
<Azure Scholar> By studying together you imply that we are meant to teach each other. I am very busy at the moment and cannot attend. Not to mention, I already know all the material.
<Azure Scholar> Therefore, it would useless.
<Azure Scholar> Until next time.

Well, that was disheartening. You send a few messages to Celeste and Akikazu. Neither of them respond. Akikazu doesn’t care about exams and you wonder what Celeste is up to. Oh well, looks like you’re studying by yourself today.

Then your phone rings.

“Yo, Takashi!” Takauji’s energetic voice blares out from the speakers.

"Hey, Takauji. What's up?"

“You busy right now?”

“I’m preparing to study for exams.” You reply. “You?”

“Really? Great! Listen, I’m doing the same. I’ve got a friend around. We’re planning on studying together. Want to join us?”

“Is it Kanami?” You ask.

“Nah, she's busy with something else today. I've with someone different. You up for it?”

>“Yeah, count me in.”
>“Only if I can bring one of my friends along.”
>“Sorry, I’m busy today.”

Well if you're interested in that....Combat Chain? Read up Fall Guy's quests, Extranatural Enforcer and Deniable Assets.

For one, that is a prohibitively long quest to be reading. Secondly, there is not very much combat, since a lot of the "combat" is just beating up small fry.

But seriously? When have choices there ever had impact on what ultimately happens in combat?
>>
“Yeah, count me in.” You say. “Mind if I invite someone else? I’ve got somebody who might be interested.”

“Is it that Celeste girl?” Takauji asks.

“How did you know?”

“You guys seem like good friends. Kanami says she’s decent at her studies, too.”

“So, who is this friend you’ve got with you. Is it somebody I know?” You ask.

“Don’t you already know her?” Takauji voice betrays his surprise. “Well, whatever. Hurry up and come to the school library.”

“That’s open today?” You ask. “Isn’t the school closed today?”

“It’s only open because exams are around the corner. The two of us are in one of the study rooms on the second floor” Takauji says. “See you there!”

The line disconnects. You put your phone back in your pocket and get dressed in some of your proper clothes. You figure that you don’t need to wear your school uniform today. So it’s your regular combination of hoodie, shirt and pants today. Before you lock the door and leave for the train station, you give one last attempt to reach Celeste.

<THE_FIRST> Hey Celeste
<THE_FIRST> I’m going to study with Takauji and his mysterious friend
<THE_FIRST> Want to come
<chocolat_orange> sorry takashi-kun, i’m busy today. maybe next time?
<THE_FIRST> Huh
<THE_FIRST> You weren’t AFK after all
<chocolat_orange> my phone was turned off in the charger.
<THE_FIRST> Oh okay then
<THE_FIRST> See you later Celeste
<THE_FIRST> Bye

You depart. The train ride is crowded as usual. You find yourself sandwiched between the carriage wall and a fat, balding man in a business suit. The fact that you’ve forced to stand and the man is devouring snacks with the speed of a hungry wolf doesn’t help matters.

The grounds of Akumachi-Kirijo are deserted, a difference from the usual noisy crowd in the mornings. You spot a couple of teachers walking side by side, but otherwise nobody is here. You walk past the statue of the founder and head towards the library.

The place is packed with students. Almost every single chair and table are taken. Despite this, a veil of silence hangs in the air. Nobody dares to speak in more than a hushed done. Everyone is busy scribbling down notes, solving example problems or tutoring their fellow classmates.

You can’t help but swallow nervously. The competition looks fierce. It is just as kaa-san described in that text she sent you last Saturday.

“Hey!” Takauji greets you the moment you enter the reserved study room. Room 23, that is. “Ready to get started?”

“Ah, this is the friend you were talking about.” There’s a girl sitting next to Takauji. Short brown hair, petite and wearing a sweater vest. “He’s in our class, isn’t he?”

“And the martial clubs too.” Takauji says, proudly.

The girl climbs out of her seat and steps towards you. She smiles and extends her hand.
“I don’t think we’ve met. I’m Kanade Shiba, the president of Class 5-3. Nice to meet you.”

“Same here.” You take the class president’s hand and give it a firm shake. “I’m Takashi Wakui. Um, I hope we can get along, class president.”

Kanade chuckles. “You don’t have to be so formal. Just call me Kanade like everyone else does.”

“Okay. Uh, thanks Kanade. Let’s work together.”

She laughs again. “You shouldn’t act so worried. I’m not going to bite.”

Takauji whistles from his spot at the table. “So she says. Hey Takashi, did you know that Kanade was the class president last year?” He grins, “She insisted that everyone call her ‘Buchou’. I couldn’t be bothered and boy was she pissed about it. In fact, she challenged me to a duel in the first—”

“Okay okay, I think that’s enough out of you. We can talk about ourselves later.” With a strained smile, Kanade rushes over and clamps her hand over Takauji’s mouth. Her irritation is obvious. “We should get back to work. I’ve only reserved this room until noon, anyway.”

So that’s what the three of you do. You sit opposite of Takauji and Kanade and take out your textbooks. Takauji looks seriously frustrated at the problems in front of him.

“Takashi, what subjects are you taking?” Kanade asks.

“Maths, English, Japanese, Mythology, History, Politics and Economics and Computer Programming. Last two are my electives. I’m good at maths but bad at English.” You reply.

“Huh…you’re the opposite of Takauji, then.” She comments. “I’m not doing any of your electives but I can’t help you there. But I can help you with English.”

“Takauji needs a bit of a refresher, too.” She gives him the evil eye and a knowing smirk. Now the spiky-hair boy looks nervous, shrinking away from his friend. “It’s why I dragged him here in the first place.”

“I’m alright at English! And I can study at home, too.” Takauji pouts.

“Sure…remember who helped you with final exams last year? Even when she was overloaded with class president duties?” Kanade snipes. “We’ll start with sentence creation. Take out your textbooks, both of you.”

You spend the morning studying with your friends…you manage to gain a better understanding of the English and Japanese languages. You also teach Takauji and Kanade about some tricks that make solving certain maths problems easier…

“Good work everyone.” Kanade states at the end. “Let’s grab some lunch.”

“Finally!” Takauji exclaims, putting down his pen and letting out a massive yawn. “I’m starving.”

You pack away your books and leave with your classmates to the academy exit. You and Takauji agree that you both can’t be bothered eating at a proper restaurant and will instead settle for fast food. Kanade looks on the verge on protesting, but gives up.

“So how did the two of you become friends, anyway?” You ask.

“I had the pleasure of showing Takauji around during his first year.” Kanade replies. “It wasn’t really a pleasure, at first though…” she trails off.

“What do you mean?”

“Eh, I kinda pissed her off on my first day.” Takauji say, casually. “When I walked into class, Kanade was all like, ‘Sensei, I have to show this idiot around?’ and I was like, ‘You know you don’t have to if you don’t want do.’ And then Kanade started going on about how she was the class president and it was her responsibility to show new student around and it totally didn’t bother her at all. Man, those were some great times.”

“Was getting beaten by me five times in a row good times for you, too?” Kanade smirks.

“Hey, I won in the end, didn’t I?”

“You won by proxy. It was a draw, but you stood up the longest.”

“It still counts!”

“In any case, I’m still the better student.” Kanade puffs her chest up with pride. “You’ve never beaten me in grades.”

“Is that a challenge? Alright, I’m going to give these exams my all!”

“Next time, say that more than three days before the exams begin!”

“Looks like you two are good friends.” You mutter. Then a thought strikes you. You briefly consider if saying this out loud would be a good idea. Then you go with it anyway, consequences be damned. You didn’t get this far by listening to the odds!

…that is a lie and you know it. Oh well.

“Hey Kanade, are you Takauji’s fiancée too?”

The reaction is instantaneous. She grinds to a halt, trembling all over. She then whips around to glare you in the eyes. Her cheeks are a lovely shade of pink. “W-what are you saying, Wakui?” she gasps, fidgeting on the spot. “Me, with this guy? That's seriously indecent! What's going on, here?”

“Well, the two of you do seem kinda close…” You trail off.

“We’re just good friends!” Kanade cries. “There’s nothing else between us.”

“You positive?”

“Yes!”

“Yep.” Takauji folds his arms and nods. “We’re the best of mates.”

“Also, you kinda reminded me of Kanami, is all.”

“Oh, her.” This time, Kanade’s mouth morphs into an annoyed scowl. “Always going on and on about marriage…it’s ridiculous! Everyone knows you’re supposed to do that kind of stuff after high school! So, what part of me resembles Kanami Ishimura?”

You open your mouth to reply, but then realize that some things shouldn’t be said. Mostly because they might end with your face smashed against the concrete pavement. You have to admit, Kanade is larger than Kanami where it counts. For a girl, at least. Both of them are still inadequate, though.

You try to not let your thought processes run across your face.

“Calm down, Kanade.” Takauji attempts to placate the aggravated student council president. He places a comforting hand on her shoulder. “Takashi’s just kidding with you. He doesn’t do that often so I even I was surprised. It ain’t no biggie.”

She sighs. “I guess you’re right. But if it was a joke, it came out of nowhere.”

“Sorry.” You mutter.

“It’s fine. Let hurry.”

The three of you eat lunch at a nearby chicken fast food place. Greasy burgers, golden roasted fries and bottles of fizzy soda to wash it all down. Takauji guzzles his and then spends the next minute coughing and burping. Kanade rolls her eyes, shakes her head and goes over to slap him on the back. You notice she’s making a pleased grin, even while her friend is making a scene in the restaurant. It’s almost as if this is a sort of guilty pleasure for her.

Is Takauji popular with the ladies? He has two female friends already. But so do you, assuming Fumika counts. The only way you would be considered popular is if you and the Void’s Chosen were the only people left on the planet.

“What—are—you—saying?” She shouts.

>>Takashi: Wander around outside.

The night air is cold. Thousands of cars rush through the streets, like a nest of glowing snakes dragging themselves across the earth. You put on your jacket and blend into the omnipresent crowd on the streets. This is familiar to you. Back before you went through your Awakening, you would sometimes roam the city at night. Nee-san and kaa-san warned you from doing so, with stories and statistics of kidnappings and murders. You never listened to them. The apartment was small and lonely and you were bored. You would meander around the district, going nowhere and meeting no-one. It suited a person like you.

“What am I thinking…”

As for tonight, you can’t be bothered studying at home. You’ve done that all morning and afternoon. There’s probably something to do out in the rest of Akumachi City. That Kozue girl might be playing around elsewhere. There’s a chance you’ll buy a snack at a convenience store and suddenly gain a fondness for a new food. Heck, maybe you’ll wind up meeting someone new and forming a bond.

That would be nice. It would be pretty cool if you made a new friend tonight.

You end up in Synth Central. The place is noisy as usual. J-pop songs from latest anime float from loudspeakers and commercials plastered on billboards. Cute girls chirp out advertisements from holograms in front of shops. Crowds of fans gather around shopping malls. There’s a massive queue at a nearby game center. Looks like the latest installment of an eroge came out today. You’re not interested.

You continue to walk. You stop outside a familiar café. A holographic poster is attached to the wall. You stare at it.

“Lovely Eight café, now hiring butlers…?” You repeat the lines printed in overly cheerful and slightly nauseating pink font. “We’ve decided to transform this maid café into a maid and butler café. If you’re a male (or a masculine girl) and think your serving skills are up to snuff, apply inside! Positions limited, personal appearance will be taken into account.”

“That’s right.” A soft, elegant voice whispers from behind. It makes you jump. The owner, a tall woman with short pink hair and dressed in a maid outfit, strides next to you. “You read the poster. It is as it says. We are hiring at the moment.”

“Er…”

“By the way, please forgive the design. My son came up with it. He’s not a graphic designer, as you can see.”

“I think it’s okay.” It’s not great, but you’ve seen worse. Particularly on art sites floating around the web.

“You’re in the minority then.” The woman turns to examine you. Her high heels click and clack against the stony ground. From this point of view, you notice she’s at least a head taller than you. “Hmm…have we met? I don’t think so. You’re not a regular customer. Then, would you by any chance be interested in the job? Looking closely, you don’t seem like you possess the disposition to serve customers and charm girls. I'll take as a no. Take no offence; everybody has their own talents.”

“Well, I…”

>“I have no redeeming qualities.”
>“I’m good at my studies.”
>[Lie] “I’m popular with girls.”
>“I am okay with children.”

“I’m good at my studies and I’m okay with children.” You respond. By children you mean a single blonde girl who looks too rich to be homeless.

“Some of our maids act like children, but it doesn’t mean they are.” The maid points out.

“Well, in that case I have…wait, I’m not even for the job.” You realize. “I’m just taking a walk around outside. It was by chance I took a look at your poster!”

“Oh. In that case, never mind.” The maid replies. She is impassive as ever. Through your conversation, she hasn’t smiled once. “My name is Lucianne Decaux and I am the owner of the Lovely Eight café. If it strikes your fancy, please come and have coffee and cake here. You will not be disappointed.”

“…I’ll keep that in mind.” You are on the verge of turning around and shambling deep into the night. Then you remember something and stop yourself. Your trainers scrape against the tarmac. “I think we’ve met before.”

“Oh?” Lucianne Decaux raises an eyebrow. “Where, by chance?”

“I’m pretty sure you know a friend of mine, you might have seen me with them. Do you know a girl named Celeste?”

“Celeste?” Lucianne replies. “Are you talking about our latest addition?”

You blink. “Wait, what?”

"Orange hair, cheerful, American, has a great fondness for sweets."

"Yeah, that's her!" You exclaim. "She works here?"

“She passed our interview with flying colors. Today is her first day. You should have told me you knew her at the beginning." Lucianne replies. "Would you like to come in and see her?”

Before you know it, you are stepping into the Lovely Eight café with Lucianne in tow. It’s bright and warm inside. The place smells of sugar-covered cakes and perfumes. Round tables are covered in finely-woven cloths with fresh flowers on top. From a distant radio, classical music plays. Maids flit about between tables, serving customers and placing down dishes with sweet smiles.

There she is. Celeste Tachibana, your Magician friend. She’s dressed in the standard maid uniform. Black and white colors, a single headdress, petticoat, dress, frilly white apron and stockings. Her headphones are missing, but the butterfly hairclip is still there. She hears the chime of the bell and hurries up to greet you. Her dress waves up and down as she strolls towards in your direction.

“Welcome back, master—” she sings.

Then the two of you meet eye to eye. Her speech screeches to a halt. Her mouth drops. The plastic-covered menu, once in her hands, is now falling to the floor.

You stare at her. You take in every inch of her new appearance.

You tilt your head. Celeste is frozen on the spot, as if a thousand invisible Bufudynes had struck her on the spot. Not that you’re one to talk. You have no idea how to process this situation either. So for the next couple of seconds, you resume eyeing her new outfit. She actually looks…kinda good in a maid costume. Like, actually cute. Nee-san once wore a similar outfit as punishment for losing a bet in high school and it didn’t suit her at all. But it perfectly fits Celeste. No wonder the manager chose to hire her.

“What. Are. You. Doing. Here.” Celeste’s voice, laden with enmity and exasperation, snaps out of your trance. She’s still smiling, probably as an obligation to protocol, but it’s no longer a nice smile. It’s the kind of smile that sexually frustrated executioners give to their victims before the head-rolling begins. Her hands are balled into fists and her hair is waving in the air all on its own. Also, is it just you, but is the temperature in the café rising higher and higher?

You wonder if now would be a good time to cut and run. Women are scary creatures. Nee-san and kaa-san are testament to this. Then again, do you really want to give your lady friend to stew over her embarrassment? For her to ruminate in her humiliation and concoct whatever dastardly revenge she would inevitably have in mind?

A vision flashes through your mind. It’s of Celeste chasing you around the Forgotten City, flames in both her hands…

You are caught between Earthys and a hard place. Fuck it, you are going to ride this train for as long as you can. If it crashes, you can at least die with no regrets.

You raise a finger and grin. “Can I have some coffee please?”

She baulks for a moment, unsure, then widens her smile. You smile right back. It’s a battle of the grins. Shit-eating versus extremely pissed off. Neither participants are willing to back down. Who will win?

“Why, of course!” She chirps. “This way, master~”

“Master, shall I give you an overview of the rules here?” Celeste hands you the menu. “One, no touching. Two, no asking for phone numbers.”

“But I have your phone number.” You say. The AETHER counterpart, at least.

“That is beside the point, Master.” Celeste continues to smile. She looks ready to strangle you. And she would succeed, even if you are her superior in terms of physical strength. You keep up your façade. “Three, no email addresses. Four, no asking when maids get off work. Five, no stalking. Six, no harming employees. Seven, no taking photos unless permitted. Eight, no bringing in outside food. Nine, no smoking. Do you understand?”

You think about it. “Do all maids have to read out the rules to customers or is it just me?”

“Very funny, Master.” Celeste replies. She takes out a tablet from her pocket, along with a plastic stylus. “May I inform you that troublesome masters and mistresses will be forcefully ejected from the premises if they cause trouble? Our head maid Miss Lucianne is very strong.”

She takes a deep breath. “Now then Master, may I take your order?”

You survey the menu.

Coffee and cake set won but I'm going to write what happens if you chose the egg Omelette and magic blessing anyway/

>"To make it taste good...some moe-moe, ker-pew!" Celeste spins around on the spot, her dress twirling and draws a heart in the air. She then 'grabs it' and pulls it close to her chest. She then bends her hands into a shape of a second heart and winks. If this was an anime, a pink heart would have come out of her hands and flew towards the screen.
>This would undoubtedly be a dazzling, enrapturing scene, if it weren't for the massive killing intent radiating out of your lady friend.

“You know, Celeste…” You begin, dropping the grin for a brief moment. This charade might have gone on a bit too far. Push more buttons and you might end up with flames where your skin used to be. “If it makes you feel any better, I think you’re doing a good job.”

Apparently she doesn’t expect this. Her eyes widen. “Really, Taka—I mean, Master?”

“Well, you managed to keep your cool when I started teasing you.” You reply. “Uh, sorry about that. I was just surprised and didn’t know how to react.”

“You have a funny way of expressing your surprise, Master.” Celeste remarks, flatly. “I appreciate the compliment, though.”

“To be honest, I didn’t really mean to come here. I was wandering around outside and saw the poster outside. Then I sort of walked in here by accident.” You say. “I think I’ve caused you trouble. I’ll leave after this.”

“No, it’s okay!” Celeste now looks guilty. “Master, I shouldn’t have lost my temper either. It’s just…it’s my first day here and I’m really nervous. I don’t want to screw up and lose my job. You know why?”

“Yeah, I do.” You mutter. “Um, well, good luck. You’re going place. Really Celeste, you’re way more productive than I am. That’s good.”

“…thanks, Takashi-kun.”

The two of you bask in an awkward silence. You attempt to distract yourself by reading over the menu. Then another crazy ideas hits you, in the same fashion a failed spacecraft would crash into the bowels of the earth.

“Hey, if you’re a maid, does that mean you can do that magic blessing thing?” You say. “You know, like the ones I saw on TV.”

A vein bulges on Celeste’s forehead. “No.” she states, sweetly.

She doesn’t look as angry off as before, at least. She must be embarrassed to do that little dance in front of one of her friends.

You end up ordering a coffee and cake set. It tastes delicious. The cake is of the lemon variety, with a cute little layer of cream on top. It may not be the best idea to drink coffee this late but whatever. You paid for the food, so you’ll eat it all!

>Your CHARISMA has increased by 8 points!
>You have grown closer to Celeste. Your relationship might grow stronger soon…

“See you next time, master.” Celeste bids you farewell, this time with a genuine, non-murderous smile.

As you leave the café, your gaze lands on the tacky hologram poster. Now that you think about it, it wouldn’t be impossible for you to meet Lucianne Decaux’s standards. You’d have to reach Confident CHARISMA first, a daunting task indeed, but getting a job here with Celeste is not completely out of the question.

You return home and prepare for bed. To be honest though, there’s still time for you to do a bit more studying. If you work inefficiently, you’ll be really tired tomorrow…

“Since it’s late, it’s best if I do mostly maths and then a bit of everything else.” Stifling a yawn, you take out your textbooks and stationery. You focus on reviewing the content you already learned, instead of trying to solve new problems. English is a bitch as usual. Nevertheless, it’s a productive study session…

>Your INTELLIGENCE has increased by 6 points!
>+2 to all exam rolls.

“Goodnight.” You say to nobody and collapse onto your bed.

[8:00 am, 4-May-2129 (WEDNESDAY)]

Today is the second day of Golden Week: Greenery Day. It’s a day to commune with nature and be thankful for blessings. This is meaningless to you.

“Morning, Takashi! Did you sleep well?”

“Yeah, I did. What’s for breakfast?”

It’s another usual morning in the Wakui household. You eat with nee-san and watch her go upstairs to sleep. What will you do now?

You decide to take something of a day off. In the morning, you sit on the couch with you laptop, How To Think Big displayed on the screen.

>>Takashi: Read.

>Question: what is the difference between doubt and questioning?
>Answer: Doubt leads to apathy and confusion. It’s fine in small amounts, but it’s nothing more than a lack of certainty. If you doubt everything, you’ll doubt truth, reality, science, faith, morality and everything. Then you’ll be left with nothing, because doubt doesn’t give anything back.
>Questioning is different. The trick is to question everything. You might discover that some things are false, but you’ll also discover that some things you thought are in fact true. This way, you’ll discover what your beliefs are.
>Then, you’ll grow as an individual. You might even influence others around you. Don’t like how something is run? Question it, find your own beliefs and then change it the way you see fit.
>Remember, questioning leads to progress, but doubt leads to inaction.

>Your UNDERSTANDING has increased by 3 points!

In the afternoon you train your body. You stand in front of your bedroom mirror and practice your punches. Widen your stance, bend your knees, kick off your back heel and strike outwards. You do this over and over again, exactly how Takauji and the rest of the martial arts club crew taught you.

You only stop when your shirt is drenched in sweat and your muscles ache.

Then you sit down on the ground and practice your magic. When you started taking your Persona training seriously, one of the first things you did was hop on the computer and read a bunch of articles about it.

You recall one of them. Theoretically, it’s possible for a Personas to learn any skill in existence, on the condition that the user is given infinite time. That’s why surprising scenarios like Djinns using Bufudyne or Kikuri-Hime learning Mortal Jihad exist. The trouble is that the affinities of the Personas get in the way. Some Personas have a disposition for physical attacks, others excel in healing and so on and so forth. Arcana and mythological origins also come into play. To give an example, Chernobog, a physically-oriented Persona of the Moon Arcana whose name was once synonymous with evil, would have an easier time learning darkness skills rather than light ones.

According to the twins in the Velvet Room, your Persona Ippon-Datara has potential at all six factors: Strength, Magic Potential, Endurance, Agility, Luck and Development Potential. As for affinities though, it’s only good at fire, darkness and physical.

You contemplate all of this as you form fireballs in your hands and snuff them out. Your reaction time is getting faster and faster. Fighting the Blackened Void is making you stronger. It won’t be long before you catch up to Celeste in terms of magic…

>Your WILLPOWER has increased by 4 points!
>Gained 3.00 C. EXP!
